TAHARA (2020) dir. Olivia Peace
"Sometimes it's painful to be inarticulate. you know, to never have the right thing to say when it really matters? Like, you might spend your entire life thinking you're dealing with a square, because it looks like a square and acts like a square, feels like a…whatever. But then one day you turn a corner and realize that actually, it's not a square, it never was. All along you've been staring at the flat face of a cube."

“My producers were not sold on this, but [it was Tehillah] bringing that reference where I saw not only can this work, but it can be the right choice for this movie — to pick a frame that’s small, so that when you’re with the character, you feel really with them. You do feel the isolation, alienation and anxiety when you can only fit one-and-a-half people in a frame because any single shot you have no idea how everyone else in the room is reacting. But it was one of those things, whether it was having my friends on set or shooting in one location where because the frame was so small, I could really carefully organize everything in the frame to make every single shot feel deliberate.” –Olivia Peace on Thinking Outside the Box with “Tahara”

After watching all the promo for the Aristotle and Dante film, thinking about the creative direction of the short film Tahara, as well as Luca Guadagnino's work on CMBYN has me envisioning the most perfect and beautiful idea of a WLW Puerto Rican based romantic coming-of-age film with loads of catholic imagery and religious undertones. The noisiness of a full bustling Hispanic household contrasted with a calm, quiet romance between two brown (or darker) girls with strong indigenous facial features and messy curly black hair glistening under the Borikén sun. The film, vibrant in colors and so much food you could smell it through the screen. Their love carrying on the wind along with the sounds of los coquíes and the score made up entirely of old classic Jíbaro music. And this is a specific creative decision of my own but I want everyone to speak Spanish EXCEPT for the main girls. I want them to respond to each other and others in heavily accented English which causes them to slow down and enunciate their words to contrast the fast, loud, and in your face sort of Spanish spoken around them. I want this film to be about the tranquility in soft, breathless, silence on an island of people who pride themselves in being heard, as if the love these girls have is a secret between themselves, in their own world and only for themselves.

sou !! hello !! this is also random and specific but i saw the datekou headcanon post and i was wondering. might you have any inarizaki road trip hcs?
i didn't until you asked me so LET'S GO
oh god you thought dateko was bad??? they were only stuck in the car for thirty minutes at MOST
(or something idk i haven't quite mapped out their geography yet but miyagi is a coastal prefecture and sendai isn't like SUPER far inland, so i'm just making assumptions out here)
but anyways. kurosu is driving obviously as much as he moans and groans about it
shoutout to the coaches btw they are CARRYING these headcanons
realistically i guess they'd road trip to another school for a training camp or like idk. maybe hot springs for some r&r bc inarizaki def has the budget for it but in my heart they road trip to suna's hometown during one of the breaks so suna can see his family <333
i guess it also kind of depends on WHERE in hyogo and aichi they are but we could get a solid 4-5 hours of driving if it was from, say, asago to tahara
kita makes a list of all the snacks everyone wants and rounds up aran, oomimi, and akagi to help him raid the market/convenience store like the old hunter-gatherer days
they end up with two massive tote bags of drinks, chips, cookies, and other miscellaneous snacks and one cooler for things like puddings and cakes and whatnot
oomimi sits shotgun because kurosu needed someone to help with directions and everyone else was on "make sure the miyas don't kill each other before we get there" duty
they all thought that kita was brilliant for making atsumu sit in the back and osamu up front because even tho they're separated the twins will NOT stop bickering and trying to throw random pieces of trash at each other. poor riseki gets caught in the crossfire the most often
they all converged to make one giant road trip playlist so you've got the weirdest mix of pop rock/bubblegum/k-pop/city pop, lofi, indie soft rock, show tunes and soundtracks, and more
(i named those genres with certain charas in mind so like. have fun figuring that out!)
nobody's willing to take a nap in fear of what the twins might do to each other when they're not looking
they play really stupid games like the alphabet-chain game and i spy and even try for a few rounds of truth or dare because, hey, there's nothing like being stuck in a car with your fellow teenagers for four hours to set the mood for emotionally vulnerable bonding time, right?
anyways. everyone learns that gin is afraid of heights and all sorts of horror movies, akagi would like to get his ears pierced some day, kosaku got rejected in middle school in front of his entire class and has refused to fall in love since, and suna takes pictures to capture the memory of a place he does not want to forget
(sorry i'm being emo about suna missing home again i'll stop)
kurosu is sweating BUCKETS in the front seat btw. "oh my god what do i do with this information am i supposed to talk to them i'm their TEACHER i'm supposed to guide them i do NOT get paid enough for this - "
a shame, really, considering inarizaki could definitely afford to give that man a raise
it's okay they get some really funny dares like daring gin to text his crush a totally random and weird question
(and thank god atsumu has his phone tucked away in his bag)
there's not a whole lot of dares they can do in the car tbh so they get really creative like daring osamu to eat this absolutely evil concoction of mixing tiramisu pudding into a bag of spicy chips and eating the whole thing
he does. nobody knows how he survived it
and then riseki dared both osamu AND atsumu to shut up and sit down and not even so much as GLANCE each other for the rest of the trip
this was at, like, the 1.5 hour mark btw
and okay he didn't say it EXACTLY like that because riseki is a sweet respectful underclassman but that WAS the closest to snapping he's ever gotten
they do stop occasionally here and there to get out and stretch their legs, but this makes their trip even longer bc it takes like thirty minutes each time to wrangle everyone and get them back in the van
also akagi is trying out his most terrible pickup lines. or antipickup lines. either one works
akagi: "are you lactose? because i can't tolerate you ;)" aran: "PLEASE, MAKE HIM STOP"
the only reason aran feels like he isn't completely suffering is because gin is sitting next to him and gin is kind of soothing like a cute pet would be. not that aran is thinking of gin as a pet nooooo ahahaha that would be weird
meanwhile gin is wondering why aran keeps trying to feed him crackers
they finally get to suna's hometown after being on the road for SIX AND A HALF HOURS
and while everyone is happy to be outside soaking up the sun and fresh air, they're all going to miss the bonding of being stuck in a van perhaps just a little bit
it's all right, they've got the return trip to look forward to
(made 100x worse when akagi busts out a drinking game and proclaims they should play with juice boxes, but that's a story for another time)

Alexa's Favorite Movies of 2023
The movies that I watched for the first time in 2023 that I enjoyed the most or that really stuck in my mind for some reason or another. They are presented in no particular order.
I also ranked all the 2023 new releases I watched this year.
If you would like to see a similar list about the video games I played in 2023, you can see it here on Tumblr or over on Backloggd.
If you would like to see a similar list about the books I read in 2023, you can see it here on Tumblr.
Tumblr media
How to Blow Up A Pipeline (2022, dir. Daniel Goldhaber)
The scene in the bar has a Christmas tree in the background, therefore I am using this as my answer when someone asks about my favorite Christmas movie and I want to be an asshole about it.
Tumblr media
The Way Things Go (2023, dir. Amalia Farrow)
For me, 2023 was a year where I lost a lot of friends. No drama, no arguments, no falling-outs. Sometimes people just drift away. Maybe I didn't do enough to maintain that friendship or maybe they didn't or maybe both of us didn't. But sometimes it happens. And I think it happened to me a lot this year. It's something that has happened to me a lot in life - this kind of drifting away from people or groups. But this year it seemed to happen a lot more and has left me frequently feeling much more alone than it has ever before. But also I found someone special this year and that's been amazing. And this two-and-a-half minute long shortfilm encapsulates that feeling better than my little blurb here did and better than any other piece of media I've ever seen.
The Way Things Go is available to watch on YouTube for free.
Tumblr media
Tahara (2020, dir. Olivia Peace)
There are lots of movies featuring shitty teenagers but this feels like it really nails a lot of ways in which teenagers were shitty back when I was a shitty teenager. Some of the best written shitty teens I've ever seen, in movies or any other medium. Top tier shitheads all over the place here.
Tumblr media
Carol (2015, dir. Todd Haynes)
New favorite Christmas movie, by a country mile.
I didn't really know anything about this movie besides Christmas Lesbians so the whole "fighting for custody of her child" plotline really caught me off guard. It's so damn good tho. The whole thing. This may end up being a yearly holiday rewatch.
Tumblr media
Cassandro (2023, dir. Roger Ross Williams)
Wrestling is something that I've never been directly into but I love to hear about. Listening to people who love wrestling talk about it and describe the storylines and stories is so much fun. Honestly I think it may be the best way to consume wrestling, especially for someone who can be squeamish about violence and injuries (aka me). So, I really love wrestling movies! And I just think it was nice to see one that didn't end with "and he got addicted to painkillers and died at the age of 42" or something! A wrestling story without a tragic end, whodathunkit.
Tumblr media
May December (2023, dir. Todd Haynes)
My immediate reaction after watching this was "what the fuck did I just watch" which is why I didn't give it a rating or leave a review at all. It left me so befuddled that I didn't know what to think of it and needed time to process it. And over time as I think about it and contemplate my own feelings and see other peoples reactions and discussions to it, I've come to like it quite a bit.
Tumblr media
Apayauq (2023, dir. Zeppelin Zeerip)
Apayauq is so cool!! She finished last in the Iditarod which earned her the Red Lantern Award and that fuckin' rules!! Lovely lil short doc about her and her life and her journey with gender and also her journey dogs across a whole lot of snow.
Apayauq is available to watch on YouTube for free.
Tumblr media
NAGA (2023, dir. Meshal Aljaser)
There is some recency bias at play here but also I have thought about NAGA every day since I watched it almost two weeks ago. That scene when Sarah is alone at the car in the middle of the desert with only the headlights to illuminate the empty fucking void of a world she find herself in and then suddenly something starts to approach her… that scene specifically has been bouncing around in my head near-constantly. Just some incredible imagery and visual work going on there.
Tumblr media
Dark Angel: The Ascent (1994, dir. Linda Hassani)
This is a movie that not only exceeded my expectations but kind of completely blew them out of the water?? I was expecting some horror-adjacent schlock about a demon from hell coming to Earth to kill the shit out of 'sinners' or whatever and on one hand, yes, that is true, that is what this movie is. But it's also just genuinely good?? It fuckin rules that right off the bat it is showing people being tortured in hell and then a voice clarifies that these aren't just any ol' sinners, no, these are landlords and bankers who exploited the working class. Veronica is a trans icon and this is the hill I will die on.
Tumblr media
Wifelike (2022, dir. James Bird)
this movie is garbage but it has the funniest name of maybe any movie i've ever seen or heard of. fucking WIFELIKE. WIFE. LIKE. god damn lmao
Tumblr media
The Doom Generation (1995, dir. Gregg Araki)
I first watch The Doom Generation as a deeply depressed teenager and then occasionally watched it every few years throughout my deeply depressing 20s and now I am keeping that up by watching it again in my deeply depressed 30s. It's a good movie! It's pretty hard to recommend, mostly because of the ending! I've looked into more of Gregg Araki's work and have really enjoyed what I've seen so far so I think he may end up being one of my favorite directors ever and it all kinda started with seeing a movie about angry depressed teenagers who are lost in life when I was an angry depressed teenager who was lost in life.
Tumblr media
Hellraiser (2022, dir. David Bruckner)
Earlier this year, I went through all eleven Hellraiser movies. It was a trial and journey that I suggest absolutely no one else go on. So maybe it's just because there's, like, six movies in a row that are trash-garbage terrible before you get to this one which is Somehow Good. Maybe my feelings on this one are higher than they should be because it was an actually competently made movie after slogging through the refuse that is the bulk of the Hellraiser franchise. But dammit I liked it and the new femme Pinhead is incredibly hot and I finally understand why people were so horny for Pinhead in the original one (or two (or three)) movies. Those old ones are good to! But this one stuck with me more, for now.
Tumblr media
Wingwomen (2023, dir. Mélanie Laurent)
I mean, this is definitely the best movie I've seen about a polycule of international thiefs that pull off One Last Heist so that the eldest of them can retire and go live their life how they want. I really hope it becomes a much bigger genre in the future.
Tumblr media
Imagine Me & You (2005, dir. Ol Parker)
This is technically not a first-time watch because I have seen it three or four times before but the last time was something like five or six years ago. This movie holds some really strong importance to me because it was one of the things I saw as a confused queer teen that was really strugging with my own feelings and my place in life. When I watched it, it was one of the only things I had seen where woman could be queer and open and happy. There was no big falling out with family. There was no major drama or tragedy to it. It's just a lesbian rom-com. And while it probably isn't the best in that particular sub-genre, it hit me at a time when I really needed it and that makes it special to me. Lena Headey should be in more movies where she's a lesbian, I think that would be good for us as a society.
Tumblr media
The Duke of Burgundy (2014, dir. Peter Strickland)
Trying to figure out how to talk about all my favorite parts of this without just outing myself and all the perverted kinks I'm into ahahaha it's a good movie, I swear!! it's not just perverse and exciting!! but it's also that!!
Tumblr media
Stay On Board: The Leo Baker Story (2022, dir. Nicola Marsh, Giovanni Reda)
Skateboarding is cool! I used to be way into it as a teen and it has always lived in the back of my mind as a cool thing for cool people. I think this year I watched something like 3 or 4 skateboarding documentaries which seems like a lot! And, hey, this one is the best because it's about a queer man coming out and not just finding his place in the world but making his place. It's a very sweet and emotional story with some strong moments. I hope Leo is doing well out there, he seems like a real solid dude.
Tumblr media
Mutt (2023, dir. Vuk Lungulov-Klotz)
I first heard about this movie via the radio(!) when I heard an interview (on NPR, probably) with the director/director Vuk Lungulov-Klotz. Riding in the car with my father (who I am not out to), hearing about this movie about a day in the life of a trans man, and just kind of vibrating with excitment about it but feeling scared to express that at all because my father would then have Some Questions that I was not ready to answer then. I had to discreetly make a note about the movie on my phone so I could figure out how to watch it ASAP and I am so glad I was eventually able to see it because it's so damn good. Feña has a fucking miserable day and it is so much fun to watch. He is so exhausted and stretched thin and trying his best and if that ain't the most relatable mood for a trans person in America then I don't know what is.
Tumblr media
Fanfic (2023, dir. Marta Karwowska)
The scene when Tosiek puts on masc clothes and experiences gender euphoria for the first time has been burned into my memory and I will never forget it. What a special moment. It really reminded me of the first time I wore a skirt. Everything felt magical, as if I had unlocked some secret in life. And I had! Because being trans fuckin' rules.
Tumblr media
The Pope's Exorcist (2023, dir. Julius Avery)
One of the most bewildering movies I've ever seen in both the best and worst ways. What a fascinating thing. It seems like it'll just be some ghost/haunting/exorcism movie but then it turns into some Catholic church apologia and sets up not just a sequel but a whole franchise. It is something that needs to be seen to be believed. Really kinda wild that it exists in the form it is. Like, no one look at this and said "what the fuck are we doing here?" Amazing.

Hollywood star Robert De Niro announced his Istanbul dream
Nobu Istanbul, one of the important representatives of the Nobu restaurant chain, of which the famous actor Robert De Niro is also a partner and named after the world-famous chef Nobu Matsuhisa, hosted an important event the previous day. Robert De Niro, who attended the opening, said that he wanted to shoot a movie in Istanbul.
Nobu 's partners, actor Robert De Niro , chef Nobu Matsuhisa, producer Meir Teper and Nobu CEO Fumihiro Tahara came to Turkey. Famous names first appeared in front of the press together with Nobu's Turkey partner, Süzer Holding Deputy Chairman Baran Süzer, and then held a special sake ceremony for Nobu.
Actor Robert De Niro , chef Nobu Matsuhisa, producer Meir Teper, and Nobu's CEO Fumihiro Tahara,  partners of the legendary Nobu Restaurant, which spread from New York to the world , came to Turkey for the first time. The partners who attended the sake ceremony at Nobu Istanbul, located in The Ritz-Carlton, Istanbul, met at a press conference before the ceremony.
How is your relationship with food?
De Niro replied, “I like food. I remember having very good meals here. I also remember tasting street food. We'll see things like this in Nobu's kitchen soon." said.
Are you considering making a movie in Istanbul?
De Niro replied, “Not yet, but it would be great to make a movie in this city. A scenario has to come first. If there is someone I want to work with, I will play. Making a movie in Istanbul would be a lot of fun. I really like the Grand Bazaar and Sultanahmet. Istanbul is very beautiful city. It has always been on my mind to shoot a movie in Istanbul, I always think about it. So someone has to give me a script. I really want to shoot a movie in Istanbul. Everyone has amazing stories to tell for this city. It takes a lot of work to shoot a movie here. Its geographical location is particularly beautiful. A city connecting Asia and Europe. Very nice place for movie. The city is huge and very beautiful. I came 20 years ago, the city is huge and there are many stories to be told here. It is such a magical place.” said.
De Niro said, “I love to eat. Even in the simplest street, you can find a very good meal at once. In a movie, we have scenes about food a lot.” said.
“Is there a movie that you regret looking back at?”
He replied, “I have no regrets. Sometimes the movie may not be good but I stand behind it and I don't regret it. Some movies are very good, I'm proud, but in the end, the movies I choose are my own free will.” said
On Turkish cinema, De Niro said: “You have asked a very good question and I cannot answer it. I haven't been able to watch movies lately. That's why I can't answer that. I wish I had watched a Turkish movie before coming here. Again, I apologize for this situation.” he said.
About Al Pacıno, with whom he took part in many projects, he said, “We took part in many projects together. He is my close friend. When a project proposal comes, we consult each other, we call each other for projects.” said.
De Niro on social media, “I don't have Instagram and Twitter accounts. Stuff like that seems ridiculous to me. Those are the most fraudulent areas. Especially on Twitter, the world's most dishonest man was dealt with.” He referred to former US President Trump.

Movie Review: Crushes and "practice" kissing might be proscribed teen "Tahara" behavior
Movie Review: Crushes and “practice” kissing might be proscribed teen “Tahara” behavior
A Rochester, New York synagogue and Hebrew School is the setting for the coming of age/coming-out dramedy “Tahara.” Teenage girls Carrie (Madeline Grey DeFeece) and Hannah (Rachel Sennott) prattle on about crushes, sexual experiences and desires, tactlessly commenting on the day’s ceremonies, traditions and participants the way self-absorbed teenaged girls do. But the film’s title should tell…
