CHAPTER 14
“What?”  Thor shot to his feet.  “When?”  Loki remained silent.  A sickening feeling made its way into his stomach, not unlike the one he felt when he heard Rogers was on Agard.  The entire situation was eerily similar, and he needed to get to you to ensure you were okay.
“Can’t say, your majesty,” replied Finn, eyes blown wide.  “Sven and I were on our way to relieve the other guards and found them encased in ice.  We were confused at first, and then we remembered stories of King Thor’s first coronation debacle —” here, both brothers winced at the memory, “— and deduced what must be happening.  Sven went to find Lady Dee to make sure she was safe.  I came to warn you.”
“I must find Lady Dee,” Loki decided.  “Even if she is with Sven, he cannot possibly take on a frost giant alone.  And she has no idea what she’s in for.”
“And I must get Jane,” said Thor, hopping to his feet.  “I’ll do a quick sweep of the palace and see if I can find their point of entrance.  Finn, I want you to go straight to the Captain of the guard and tell him fryse.  They’ve been trained for this.  They’ll know what it means.  Loki—”
Loki was already out the door.  This time, he had the presence of mind to portal himself to your room.  Sven was standing outside when he got there.  “Sven!”
“My king!”  His chest was heaving, clearly a result of having run all the way here.   “The frost giants!  I came to find Lady Dee but she’s not here!  Do you think she’s in trouble?”
“Calm down.”  Loki placed a hand on the younger boy’s shoulder.  He could feel his entire body trembling.  “I want you to try to calm down, then go straight to the harem —”
Sven was quick to protest.  “But Lady Dee!”
“I will find Lady Dee,” Loki promised, all the while trying to calm his own rising panic.  “I will bring her to the harem.  In the meantime, I need you to round up everyone you can and get them there.  Can you do that for me?”  Sven blinked, gaze unfocused.  “Sven?  Can you do that?”
“Yes, your majesty.”  He bowed low, scampering off to do as his king bid.  Loki took a deep breath once he was gone.  He forced himself to turn and enter your room, eyes searching for any sign of a struggle.  A knocked-over lamp, maybe, or even a broken lock would indicate you had been taken.  Instead, he found a perfectly pristine bedroom with everything in its place — everything except the bed.
The pillow on one side was rumpled, the sheets pulled back as though someone had left in a hurry.  He concluded you had endured another sleepless night, which meant you had left on your own.  But to go where?  Surely not to him.  Not after witnessing his atrocious behaviour.  So then, where?  Where could you have gone?
“AHHH!”   Loki stiffened.  He knew that scream.  “HELP!”  That was your scream.
He ran out of the room, conjuring two daggers as he sped towards your cries.  It did not take long to find you.  You were right in the other hall, not far from his study, and a rather menacing Jotunn stood before you.
“Hush!” It yelled.  “Tiny, annoying Asgardian!” Blue hands reached towards you, intent on shutting you up as you cowered against the wall.  Loki refused to let that happen.  He launched a dagger at the giant, watching it embed itself in the thick, cobalt skin of its back.  The giant let out a yell.  However, he still stood firm.
Loki knew a dagger was not enough to fell such a creature.  Hel, he was one himself, and even without his Asgardian battle training, he would have laughed at the tiny knife.  So he wasted no time in readying the spell he had long perfected for use at times like this.  He raised his hands, green sparks flying from his fingertips, and a bolt of magic sliced through the giant’s neck.
A choking sound erupted in the air.  The Jotunn turned, one hand moving to his throat before his head promptly slid off and hit the floor with a thud.  The body fell after, producing a louder sound that reverberated off the walls.  It also brought Loki into your line of sight for the first time since the cell.
You were silent at first, staring at the Jotunn with wide eyes.  Loki did not move an inch.  He let his eyes wander over your clothed body to identify any signs of injury.  A pair of the pyjamas he sent you peaked out below your askew robe.  It was open and loosely tied, revealing no marks on the little bit of skin that was visible.
“Lady Dee?”  Your eyes snapped to his, and Loki was surprised by how unsettled it made him.  There was an abundance of emotions in your stare — fear, wonder, and a little bit of surprise.  Nothing directed at him, yet his earlier actions returned to him and the shame burned away all his usual confidence.  “Are you alright?”
“Y-yes.”  The shakiness in your voice was warranted.  “N-no?  I mean, I’m not injured.”  Loki held out a hand to you, holding his breath when your eyes paused on the limb.  He almost sighed in relief when you accepted his help and rose to your feet.  “What was that?”
“A frost giant,” he answered.  “Jotunns.  They’ve stormed the castle, and they’ve done it before.  I must get you out of here.  These halls are not safe.”  Loki began leading you towards the harem while you clutched his arm with both hands.  Despite the situation, he secretly enjoyed being close to you once again.  He also hated that he would have to leave you alone in a short time.
“What’s a frost giant?” he heard you ask from behind him.  “And why are they invading?  Did you do something wrong?”
“I’ve done many wrong things, flower.”  The endearment slipped out on its own.  “The cause of this, though, is not entirely my own doing.”
The sound of fighting from ahead made him grit his teeth.  He needed to get through that hallway to reach the harem.
“Alright,” Loki turned to you.  “We can’t go that way.  I’m going to create an—Oof!” Something hard knocked into him, effectively pushing him into you.  He caught himself on the wall behind you and turned to face his attacker.  A frost giant stood before him — much younger than the one he had just slain, and much quicker, too, seeing as he immediately launched another head butt that had Loki pressing you against the wall to protect you.
“Loki!”  Your voice was a frantic whisper.  “Loki!”  He grit his teeth against the pain in his rib and sent up a barrier between yourselves and the giant.  It beat the magic wall with its fist, sending waves of light rippling with each thump.  “Loki what are we gonna do?”
“Don’t be alarmed.” He turned his head to look at you, noting the worry creasing your face.  “I’m not going to let you get hurt.  I—”.  A familiar sound filled the air.  Loki looked back just in time to see Mjolnir knocking the Jotunn out of the way before arcing back in the air to where it came from.
Thor appeared not long after.  He sported a wide grin and a bright glow, enthralled by the action of battle.  “Brother!” Loki winced as sweat dripped off his brother’s barrel-sized arms.  “And Lady Dee!  This hallway should be clear now.  Go on ahead to the harem.  Jane is waiting.”
“Come.” Loki kept you close as he crept down the hall — this time with a dagger held in front of him to fend off any more surprise attacks.  He should never have let the giant catch him off guard.  Usually, he was much better at avoiding such attacks.  Having you by his side proved to be a distraction.  He could not focus on a fight while you were there.  Too many factors were at play, too many dangers lurked.  He needed you secure and out of harm’s way if he was to be of any use.
“My king!”  Sven appeared from around the corner, sword drawn but free of blood.  Loki was pleased that his orders had been followed.  “Miss Dee!  This way, quickly!”
“Sven.”  The relief in your voice was palpable.  “Are you hurt?  Where’s Kari?  Is she okay?”
Sven reached out an arm to you, which you took, though you kept your other hand fisted tightly in Loki’s sleeve.  “We’re both fine, Miss Dee.  King Loki asked me to round up as many people as I could find and bring them here.  Kari was already on her way with some other friends.  They’re all safe.”
Loki placed a hand on the younger boy’s shoulder.  “You’ve done well, Sven.  I have one last task for you.  Take Lady Dee and lock yourselves in the harem.  I’m enchanting the door so only myself or my brother can get through.  Do not come out until one of us comes to get you.”
“Wait.”  Loki felt your grip tighten.
“I will, my king.”  Sven cracked open the door.  Dozens of anxious faces appeared behind it.  Loki stepped forward to address them.
“Do not be frightened,” he began, fully aware of you still clinging to his arm.  “Frost giants have stormed the castle,” here, gasps filled the air, “but my brother and I, along with our very competent guard, have it under control.  I need you all to stay here for your safety while I rejoin the fight.”
“Wait,” you repeated, louder this time.  “Just wait.” A naked look of alarm on your face alerted Loki to your imminent panic.
“Sven, could you give us a moment?”  He pulled the door in behind him to give you both some privacy.  “What’s the matter?”
“You’re going back out there?” Hysteria raised your voice to new heights.  “You just said it wasn’t safe!  Why would you go back out there?”
“It’s not safe for you,” Loki amended, placing a hand over the one digging into his arm.  “I’ve been in many battles over the years.  This is simply another one.”
“What if you get hurt?” you whispered.  “What if you die!”
“Shh.”  Loki held you by your upper arms.  “I am not going to die.  The frost giants have tried this before and they’ve not succeeded.  Probably the actions of a few, like the last time.  They won’t make it out alive.”  He lifted your chin with a bent finger.  “But I will.”
Tears welled in your eyes.  A strangled sound erupted from your throat, and you launched yourself at him, wrapping your arms around his neck.  Loki lifted you off the floor at once.  This was the closest you had been since the night he held you fast in his study, and he let himself melt into you.
Your scent surrounded him— apples and cinnamon, one of the many bath oils he had sent you—and filled his head to the point of giddiness.  He was so wrapped up in holding you against him that he almost did not hear you speak.  “Come back to me.”
          “Hmm?”
“Come back to me,” you repeated.  “Promise me.”
“I promise I shall return.  Trust that I have much incentive to stay alive.”  He gave you one final squeeze before releasing you.  Your feet hit the ground, though you kept your arms around his neck.  “I will come back.”
         Your lip trembled.  “You better.”
He wanted to kiss you.  Standing there, with his hands on your waist and your face so close to his, kissing you was all he could think about.  It would be so easy.  Just a brush of his lips against yours, and off he would go to battle, happier than he had ever been in one.
Except that kiss could be misconstrued as a goodbye.  It could also be one you were not ready for, and the last thing he wanted was to make you uncomfortable.  So, he let go of your waist and gently pushed you behind the doors.  “I must go now.  Stay here and be safe.”
“Okay.”  He rapped once on the door.  Seven stuck his head out and helped you inside.
“I’m shutting the doors now,” Loki reminded him.  “No one will be able to enter or leave until I return.  I’m trusting you to look after everyone.”
           “Yes, your majesty.”
He closed the door, forcing himself not to look at you.  If he did, he was sure he would never leave.
     ooOOoo
The doors shut in front of your face with a silent click.  A green light appeared not long after, starting at the bottom and climbing until it dissipated at the top.  Curious, you placed both hands on the smooth surface.
“I wouldn’t try to open those if I were you,” said Sven.  “The king’s magic is sound.  You’ll just exhaust yourself pushing and they won’t move an inch.”
You dropped your hands and turned to Sven.  “What am I supposed to do?  Just sit here and wait?”  He gave a slow shrug.
“It’s what the king ordered, Miss, and forgive me, but you’ve no battle training.  An inexperienced civilian out there would only cause trouble.”  You said nothing.  “Miss Dee, you could die.  You could die, and I doubt the king would be pleased.”
“Oh, he’d be very displeased,” spoke another voice.  It was a little girl, no more than twelve.  Her fair hair was done up in two pigtails tied with blue bows at the end.  “You’re the king’s girlfriend, after all.”
Heat bloomed in your face.  Sven gave you a knowing look.  “I-I-I’m n—”  You cut yourself off to take a deep breath before starting again.  “I am not the king’s girlfriend.”
“Yes you are.”  It was another little girl, about as old as the fair-haired one.  Dark curls escaped her messy bun, and a wooden sword was clutched in one hand.  “I saw you both out in the rain not long ago.  You looked like his girlfriend to me.”
The fair-haired one clapped her hands together.  “This is exciting!  King Loki has never had a girlfriend before — well, except for that one with the red hair, but she wasn’t very nice, was she, Sigrid?”
“Not at all.”  Sigrid made a face, then visibly brightened.  “You’re much nicer than her, Lady Dee.  Much prettier, too.”
“Much prettier than who?” you asked.  At the same time, someone gripped your elbow.  Darcy appeared in your line of sight.
“Tilly, Sigrid, isn’t it past your bedtime?”
Tilly flicked one fair pigtail over her shoulder.  “It’s rather hard to sleep when the castle is being stormed.”
“I’m sure you can both find a way.  Go.”  Darcy shooed them.  “They’re very nosy, aren’t they?  Come on.  Let’s go to my room.”
You bid goodbye to Sven and let Darcy lead you to her room.  Jane was lying on her bed when you got there.  A cool cloth covered her eyes, curtains closed to keep the sunlight out, and you suddenly felt a little embarrassed at your earlier behaviour.  Jane’s husband, the man she was married to, was out in the fight.  Loki was not your husband.  He was…well, you weren’t sure what he was, but you were certain that Jane had the most reason to be hysterical out of anyone.
And yet she was not.  She lay beneath the covers, the only sign of her anxiety the whiteness of her knuckles as she clutched the quilt.  You perched yourself on her left, Darcy on her right.
“Found Dee,” said the curly-haired girl.  “Are you sure you don’t want any tincture?”
“I’m fine, Darcy.”  The queen removed the cloth and sat up.  She reached for your hand, giving it a gentle pat.  “How are you?  Are you hurt?”
You shook your head.  “No.  I ran into one of those frost thingies—” Jane gripped your hand.
“You ran into a frost giant?
“ How did you get away?” Darcy wanted to know.  Her eyes ran over your body.  “And unscathed too.  I don’t see any frostbite on you.”
“Loki saved me.”  You wondered if they heard how soft your voice got when you said his name.  “I don’t know how he found me, but he did.  That thing accosted me in the hall and he just appeared and killed it.  What are those things?”
“Frost giants,” Jane told you.  “Jotunns, from Jotunheim.  It’s one of the more barbaric realms.  A frozen wasteland with inhabitants that live up to its name.  This isn’t the first time they’ve tried to invade Asgard.”
“What do they want?” you asked.  “Why do they keep invading?”  Jane and Darcy shared a look.  “What?  What aren’t you telling me?”
“Asgard and Jotunheim have a long, complicated history,” Darcy explained.  “Going back way before we were born.”
“You should ask Loki,” Jane interjected.  “He’ll be able to explain better than — Ah!”  She winced suddenly, biting her lip against what looked like pain.  Your suspicions were confirmed when she touched the side of her head.
“Jane, just take the tincture,” Darcy implored her.  “Why are you letting yourself suffer through this?”
“Because I’m pregnant,” Jane announced with a hint of annoyance.  “I’m pregnant, and Thor doesn’t know, and if I ask the healers for a baby-safe tincture they’ll know before him and I don’t want that.”
Darcy looked at you.  Her eyes were as wide as yours.  “Pregnant?” She echoed.  “Since when?”
You were just as confused as her.  Pregnancy had been something forced on the women around you for so long that you had no idea how to react.  “Were you and King Thor trying?”
“Just Thor,” she corrected, “and we weren’t not trying.  We haven’t really discussed babies yet, to be honest.  I kept thinking we had time.  Clearly, time had something else in store.”
“Are you happy?” you enquired.  “Is this a good thing?”  Jane gave a small smile.
“Yeah.  I’m excited about it.  Thor will be a good father.”
“Thor will be an excellent father,” Darcy trilled.  “Once he remembers to be careful with those big arms of his, of course.  And you’ll be great too.”
“Maybe.  I’m willing to learn as I go along.  Right now, all I’m worried about is Thor.  He’s been in countless battles before, but now it feels more real.  If anything happens, he’ll leave two people behind.”
“Thor is not going anywhere,” Darcy assured her.  “He isn’t just good in battle; he loves it.  And he loves you, and he’s going to love that baby.  He’ll make it out of this.”  She looked at you.  “Loki will too.” You didn’t have the energy to respond to that.
“I’m so tired.”  Jane flopped back on the bed.  “Aren’t you guys tired?”
Darcy let out a yawn.  “Beat.”  She curled on her side, a pillow under her head.  “What about you, Dee?”
“I’m too wired to sleep,” you admitted.
“Try,” Jane implored.  “It’ll do you no good to stay up worrying.  Right, Darcy?”  Gentle snores emanated from the curly-haired girl.  Jane gave you a wry grin.  “That answers that.”
She lied back, placing the cloth over her eyes once more.  You, too, reclined into a more comfortable position and rested your head.
             “Dee?”
             “Hmm?”
“Loki’s not gonna die.”  You glanced up at her to find her still in her earlier position.  “I can feel you worrying from here.  Try to relax.  One thing about Loki is, he always comes back.”
OOooOo
Sleep did not come easily to you.  In fact, it did not come at all.  You lay in bed in the dark, listening to Darcy’s quiet snores.  Jane managed to get some rest, but ever so often, you would see her lift her head and peer toward the door.  You ignored her when she did this.  The door was not going to open.  It hadn’t in hours, and it surely wouldn’t if either of you kept —
“Jane?”  A deep voice filtered through from the other side.  Both you and Jane shot straight up.
“Thor?” She whispered.  “Is that you?”  The door cracked open to reveal the older king.  Jane flew out of bed and flung herself at her husband in record time.  You sat up, waiting for a good moment to ask Thor about his brother.
“Are you okay?” Jane asked.  “Are you injured?  What happened with the frost giants?”
“Twas but a small group of rebels.  We managed to defeat most of them and a few surrendered.  They are being transported to the dungeons for questioning.”  He ran a hand across his stubble face.  You could make out a few cuts and bruises on his face, and there was a tiredness in his blue eyes.  The same blue eyes that sparked with interest when they landed on you.  “Lady Dee.”
          “King Thor.”
“Just Thor,” he murmured, not unlike his wife’s earlier comments.  “My brother requests your presence, if you would be so inclined.”  You rose to your knees.
“Loki,” you breathed.  “He’s alive?  W-was he hurt?”
“Yes,” replied Thor.  “My brother is alive,  but he has been injured in battle.  Broke a few ribs.  He is being tended to in his room.  Sven can take you to him.”
You did not wait to ask about other injuries, nor did you look for Sven.  You simply threw the covers off you and ran all the way to Loki’s bedroom.  The doors were closed when you got there.  A sharp knock rectified that.  The bronze doors opened, and Eir the healer appeared to you.  “Lady Dee.”
“Eir.  The king sent for me.”  The corners of the healer’s eyes crinkled.
         “That he did.  This way.”
She led you into the room, past bookshelves and cushioned chairs to the largest canopy bed you had ever seen.  It was swathed in silken golds and greens, decorative pillows that looked too expensive to touch, and in the middle of it sat Loki.
Erik was at his side, tightening a white bandage around his waist.  The rest of his torso was bare, revealing chiselled abdominals and strong muscles you would never have expected from the lean king.  It brought a blush to your cheeks — until you saw the bruises and gashes littering his white skin.  That wiped away any provocative thoughts in one go.
          “Loki?”
He spied you with those green eyes that you had come to feel so at home in.  “Lady Dee.  You came.”
“Of course I did,” you whispered.  “Why wouldn’t I?”  Shame coloured his face.  Instead of answering you, he addressed the young healer instead.
         “Erik, are you quite done?”
“Yes, your majesty.  I’ve left you some pills to take for the pain.  They will help you heal faster.”  He bowed low then, and made to exit the room, but not before approaching you with a worried look.  “Lady Dee?  How is —”
“Sven?” you finished.  “Anxious and waiting for you, I’m sure.  Go by the harem and ask for him.”
Erik’s exit left you and Loki alone for the first time since the attack.  Neither of you seemed to know what to say.  A million questions raged through your mind yet could not make their way past the barrier that was your lips.
         “Are you alright?”
A laugh bubbled past your lips, but not one of humour.  “You’re asking me if I’m okay?” you questioned.  “You look like you got chopped five ways to Sunday and you’re asking me if I’m okay?”
“I’m a god,” Loki reminded you.  “I’ve been in battle before.  I’ll heal.  I’m worried about you.”  He grew quiet, his confidence bleeding out as his shoulders dropped.  “You’ve been through an ordeal today — many, in fact — and I was responsible for one of them.”
          You blanched.  “It’s o—”
“Okay?” Loki supplied, with a raise of his dark brow.  “No, it is not okay.  It is not okay that I lost my temper in front of you, and it is not okay that I raised my voice at you.  My anger was not directed at you, and for that, I am sorry.  I cannot take back what I said or did, but I can promise it will never happen again.  That being said,” he paused to take a deep breath, further enhancing his already impressive chest, “I’m not sorry I killed him.  I would do it again and to anyone, if it meant keeping you out of danger.”
“Even James?”  He lifted a brow.  “That night you took me to the gardens, I made a quip about you killing James.  I asked if you’d actually do it, but you never answered.”  You crossed your arms over your chest.  “Would you?”
           “Yes.”
“Because he went against your rule?” you wanted to know.
“Because he hurt you, flower,” Loki replied like it was the most obvious thing in the world.  “He hurt you, and for that, he has to die.”  His eyes dipped down to your feet, which brought a frown to his handsome face.  “Your feet are bare.  Where are your shoes?”
Your own eyes snapped down to your feet.  They were bare, as Loki said, and you realised you left your shoes behind in your haste to get to him.  “I seem to have left them behind.”
“Come here.”  He pulled back the covers and patted the mattress.  “Please.  The floors are cold at night.”
You moved over to him without a second thought.  The mattress moved with your weight as you sank into it, and the sheets that touched your skin were like no silk you’d ever felt.  Even the pillow Loki gave you to prop your back on was softer than anything you had slept on before.
“You look troubled,” Loki announced.  “Tell me what’s on your mind.”
Your eyes wandered to his ceiling, painted with murals of gods and men.  “I’m confused.”
           “About?”
            “You.”
“Oh.”  Loki quieted for a while.  “Might I ask for specifics?”
“You’re a powerful man,” you told him.  “Calculating, stealthy… violent.  I’m not saying this to upset you.  I’m just trying to understand you.”  You turned your head to look at him and found him staring at you with an odd mixture of anxiety and fascination.  “You’re not an abusive man.”
           “No.”  The answer was sharp.
“You’ve never hurt anyone unless they deserved it?  You’ll never hurt me?”
“If you’re asking if I’ve ever placed a hand on someone who was not my enemy, the answer is no.”  He stretched out his pinky to caress yours.  The touch made you shiver.  “And I would never hurt you.”
You believed him.  With all the abuse you had gone through, you learned how to read people.  It was how you were able to survive James’ moods.  You could tell when he was angry by his footsteps, the way he would set his mouth or throw his boots aside when he walked in the door.  Those were the days you knew you had to tread lightly.  On other days, when he was in a better mood, you tested your limits a bit.
This constant cycle of behaviour wisened you to men.  You developed a sort of sense for reading them.  Most of the men you met were just like James, and you could tell from the get-go.  They’d look at you like an object to be fucked and bred, and you knew they were not to be trusted.
Loki never looked at you like that.  From the first night you met him, with all that arrogance and authority, his first thought for you was your health.  How skinny you looked.  And he went a step further to make sure you were okay.  In retrospect, he could have been kinder about it, but the Loki you had come to know in the past few weeks was arguably the kindest man you had ever met.  At least he was to you.
“I saw you,” you told him.  “In the dungeon.  I saw you turn blue like those frost giants.”  You flipped on your side to look at him without straining your neck.  “You’re one of them.  Is that why they invaded?”
Loki scooted closer to you.  “Yes and no.  Many years ago, Asgard and Jotunheim were at war.  My father led the battle and found me as a baby in their temple.  I was tiny, you see, too small for a giant, so they left me to die.”  You reached out to touch his bicep.
          “I’m so sorry.”  He shrugged.
“It’s the way of the giants.  There is no love lost there.  Besides, the family I found was much better than the one I left.  When I was younger, I was a bit blind to that.  Even convinced a few giants to invade and ruin my brother’s coronation some years back.”
“Darcy said this wasn’t the first time they invaded,” you recalled.  “Is it that they want the throne?”
“They want their casket, kept in our vault.  It’s rightfully theirs, but they plan on using it to destroy other realms.”  He looked at you with intent.  “You see why we cannot give it to them.  A ruler’s job is not always fair.”
A yawn built in your throat.  You stifled it down because there was another question you wanted to ask Loki.  “Tell me why you and your brother colonised the earth.”
That made him silent.  He brought his hands together, stepping his fingers as he lost himself in thought.  You let him gather himself, feeling the sleep creep up on you for the first time that night.
“My mother died on Earth,” he whispered.  “She was the best person I knew, and someone on Earth killed her.”
“Loki…” Your hand tightened on his bicep.  Until then, you hadn’t noticed it was still there.  “Loki, I am so sorry.  What happened?”
“You know my brother fell in love with Jane on Earth?”  You nodded.  “He loved it so much he tried to convince us all to come.  You know my bad experiences there,” no explanation was necessary, “but my mother wanted to see it herself.  She often visited Earth to check up on its inhabitants.  I was worried about her safety.”
“By themselves, humans pose no danger to us, but their weapons do.  Weapons made using tesseract energy and alien DNA… these all presented a danger to her.  So, she assembled a personal guard to accompany her on her trips.  One day, none of them made it back.”
“Do you know who did it?” you asked.
“Captain Rogers all but admitted it was him.  He could have been lying, but it must have been someone high up.”
A stiff breeze blew in through the cracked stained glass window.  You shivered when it touched your skin, prompting Loki to pull the thick quilt up around your shoulders.  He left his hand on your arm over the quilt, and you found you did not mind his closeness.
“When she died, we received a message from one of her guards.  We never found them, or the rest, but Thor found her body.  It was clear signs of Arsonia poisoning.  He admitted to running his mouth to his Avenger friends about the plant.  They knew it could bring down a god.  It has to be one of them.”
“Or all of them,” you supplied.  “They could all be in on it.  They don’t like you or your brother very much, you know.” Loki lifted a brow.  “I’m sure they were Thor’s friends before, but taking over someone’s planet tends to cause feelings of resentment.  I could hear it in their voices when they spoke.”
“They’ll all be killed for this,” he told you.  “It’s treason against their king.  Be that as it may, I was wrong to take their home.  They may have always been terrible men, but I was the catalyst that set these horrors in motion.  Horrors that led to your suffering and that of so many others.”  He ghosted a finger over your cheek — barely even touching the skin.  “Can you ever forgive me, flower?  Can you forgive the part I’ve played in this?”
“Flower,” you repeated.  “Is that my name now?”
Loki smiled.  “I think it’s fitting.  Liten blomst.”  At your look of confusion, he elaborated, “Little flower.”  Now it was your turn to smile.
“I like it,” you said, then, “and I forgive you.  It’s not your fault what James did to me.  I see your remorse and that you’re trying to rectify it.  That means more to me than you’ll know.”
“There’s something else.  Remember when I sent some colleagues down to Earth?  They’re coming back soon with reports.  Until then, I’ve sent all commanders to a mandatory one-week training session that will keep them away from their spouses until after the summit.”
“That’s great.  Loki, that’s amazing.  Are any of the women coming with them?”
“Yes,” Loki replied.  “I wanted to bring Sharon Carter here.  I figured someone should tell her what happened to Steve, and I want her help.  I’m sure she knows information we are not privy to.  Do you think she’d help us?”
Your answer only took a second.  “She will if I talk to her.  Sharon doesn’t trust you, but she trusts me.  Take me with you, and let me explain to her that you only want to help.”  Loki grinned.
“I was going to ask if you wanted to come with me.  I’ll take that as a yes.”  He moved his hand back to your shoulder, letting the thumb move in gentle strokes over the quilt.  “You look tired.  There are circles under your eyes.  Did you not sleep?”
“I couldn’t,” you mumbled.  The sleep you missed out on was coming back for revenge, and Loki’s ministrations added to your drowsiness.  “I needed to make sure you were okay.”
“I told you I would come back,” he reminded you.  “Promised, in fact.”
You hummed under your breath.  “Yes, you did.”  His bed was so cosy.  Warmth from the quilt engulfed you and the pillow was a cloud beneath your head.  “I like your bed.”
“I like you in my bed.”  You blushed, and let your eyes slip closed.  “Would you like to get some sleep?  You can stay here.  I’ll watch over you.”
“I have more questions.”  The little girls’ comments about Loki’s mysterious red-haired lover floated back to you.  “And besides, you’re the one that’s injured.  You need rest too.  Erik told you that.”
“We’ll both rest,” Loki suggested.  His thumb touched your cheek, moving over the skin in gentle movements.  “We’ll both rest now, and I’ll answer any questions you have tomorrow.”
            You hummed.  “Promise?”
There was a slight shift of the bed — Loki moving closer to you — then his lips were on your forehead.  You paused at the contact.  It was not at all unwelcomed, just so pleasant it surprised you.  You allowed yourself to relax in his embrace, and his lips moved ever so slightly over your skin.  “I promise.”

Thrown - Chapter 21: Moving Forward
Summary: The community helps an Æsir family move to their new home.
Word Count: 1,606
Author's Note: I hope everyone has a great week. :)

Today was a moving day. These were becoming more frequent as refurbishments and construction were completed in New Asgard and the citizens were gradually moved into their permanent residences. Moving days always brought Loki a small sense of pride. He had worked closely on the problem of housing the Æsir, determining where to put everyone and how to shift them from one place to another as New Asgard grew. Finding the most efficient use of space, both temporarily and in the long term. Things were working out quite well so far and when a move was made everyone was always grateful for a little more room to breathe.
Today they were moving Sven Leifson and his family out of a space that had originally been used as a shop and into a refurbished house down the street. In addition to the family moving into a proper living space, Elof, the tailor living upstairs with his wife, was gaining access to the shop floor downstairs. There were high spirits all around.
Elof had come by the market this weekend where he struck up a conversation with you. He mentioned the move so naturally you had arrived and insisted on helping. "Frail mortal, come to assist gods?" Loki ribbed with a smirk. "I'm worried about you doing all this manual labor. What if you chip a royal nail?" You quipped back. That earned a hearty laugh from the Valkyrie.
Despite Loki's mockery, you weren't the only human here today. It seems a few others had become acquainted with either Sven or the tailor and had come to lend a hand. He took a moment to admire the mix of Asgardians and humans in the crowd today. If for only this instant it felt like the communities were truly melded, bent to one purpose. You pushed past him, making a comment about his work ethic, and he had no choice but to follow you inside with his own biting remark about how your strength was sure to fail. Ash remained outside, entertaining the human and Æsir children alike. Or perhaps they were entertaining him.
Loki was packing a box in the kitchen when he came across a ceramic mixing bowl in a familiar style. He turned it over and unsurprisingly found the bottom was stamped with the silhouette of a tern. On more than one occasion during these moving days he had encountered dishes or vases marked with your stamp. He wondered how many Æsir you had endeared yourself to. He wondered if you told them all the same story.
"You're trying too hard." You said to him as you carried a box outside. Loki was following behind. He had made a point of carrying twice as many boxes as you at any given time. "On the contrary, I'm hardly trying at all." You laughed and shook your head at him as you stowed the box in the truck.
He found space for his boxes then turned to you as you leaned against the truck to take a break. Loki noticed that despite the temperature your sleeves were pushed up to your elbows, likely from the exertion. "You look a bit flushed. Perhaps you shouldn't try to keep up with gods." You rolled your eyes. "Or is it that my feats of strength are flustering you?" You shot him a warning look. "Loki...." He smirked. "I only ask because I've been known to have that effect on you." "Hey! We had a deal!" He tilted his head. "Did we have a deal? You and I?" Your brows furrowed as you tried to decipher what he meant. "We traded dinner for never bringing it up again." "That doesn't sound like a deal I would make." He looked at you sidelong. "My brother, on the other hand, regularly makes poor trades such as that." You stared at him a moment in thought, then your eyes widened as it dawned on you. "You swindler." He feigned innocence. "Me? Swindle? I'm wounded. All I did was stand by while you bargained with Thor." You simply crossed your arms and scowled. He chuckled and leaned against the truck. "I found some of your handiwork in the kitchen." "Yeah, Sven needed a mixing bowl." "So he purchased one from you?" You smiled a wry smile. "Wouldn't you know it, I had accidentally overproduced bowls that week." He tutted. "You're such a deceitful creature." "That's rich coming from you." "Are you still on that? You deceived yourself, darling, I was merely present." You scoffed and pushed off the truck, returning to work.
**
With the number of people present, the work was completed fairly quickly. Most of the group was continuing on to assist with the unpacking at the new house, but you and the brothers and a few others were hanging back to help Elof move some items into the shop.
Valkyrie left to fetch something for dinner. You and the brothers were milling around outside when a car parked on the street. Loki immediately recognized the occupants. Khadija stepped out and began gathering parcels of fabrics from the trunk. Hani also emerged, and when she saw you and the gods she immediately sprinted over, grinning.
"Miss Terna! Mr. Loki! We're making a delivery!" She seemed very proud of this accomplishment. "Oh, that's great! Well done." You responded. "Hani, this is Thor, Loki's brother." "Ah, so this is Hani." Thor shook the girls hand. "I've heard much about you." The girl set her big brown eyes on the god. "Can you do magic too?" "No, not quite like Loki. But I am the God of Thunder." She frowned. "I'm afraid of thunder." "Oh, well, you have nothing to fear of me, I assure you." He faltered, grasping for something else. "I also have an axe, which I can summon to my hand." She didn't look terribly impressed. "Mr. Loki can do fireworks. And he made me a flower." Loki's expression was insufferably smug. Thor sighed, looking put-out. "Yes, my brother's magics are very impressive." One of the other children pulled Hani away into their game. You had a hand pressed to your mouth, stifling your laughter. Loki gave Thor an arrogant smile. "How does it feel? Being second-favorite?" "You had a head-start." Thor said dejectedly. He suddenly looked up and snapped his fingers. "I can fly! I should have told her I can fly." He looked toward Hani but she was already fully immersed in play. Loki patted his shoulder. "Don't worry. I'm sure you'll make an impression on the child next time."
Khadija was making her way with her cart, loaded with bolts of her dyed fabric. You smiled and walked forward to greet your friend. Elof stepped outside with his arms spread wide. "Lady Khadija! You are just in time." He shook her hand and turned to Thor. "Thor, have you met Khadija? She makes such wonderful patterns. I knew immediately we must have a partnership!" Khadija smiled as she shook Thor's hand. "Likewise, I have seen Mr. Elof's craft. I know that he will honor my fabrics with his fine work."
The group at hand helped to unload Khadija's wares into the shop. Elof gave an enthusiastic tour of the storefront and workspace, espousing his vision for the future. Here would be a fitting room, here the window display, this space for cutting new designs. This was a man who could not wait to get back to his craft. It was heartening to see an Æsir so optimistic about what was to come.
All the work that could be done today had now been done. Elof thanked everyone graciously and his wife came downstairs to see everyone off. She shook each person's hand in turn. "Thank you, thank you. I am so grateful I can now send him downstairs to busy himself. He has been driving me mad, cooped up!" Elof laughed good-naturedly with the rest of you.
Thor invited Khadija to dinner, but her husband already had something waiting for them at home. She and Hani left, and you walked with the brothers to their humble abode, with Ash trailing behind. Valkyrie was already in the kitchen with pizza.
Everyone ate their fill. Thor brought out Stormbreaker and was inspecting it, hefting it experimentally. He mentioned he was considering bringing it to the market to show Hani. You shared a quiet chuckle with Loki.
Valkyrie was leaning forward in her seat, a hand on either side of Ash's salt-and-pepper face. She looked to you. "How old is Ash?" "Almost eleven. He's an old man." You smiled at the dog. "I'm surprised he's not asleep, he spent so much energy with those kids today." "Aww. Am I keeping you awake?" Valkyrie spoke in lilted tones to the dog as she scratched his neck. He did not answer.
Conversation shifted to how well the day had gone, and how well the development of New Asgard was progressing. Thor grabbed Loki by the shoulder. "You should be proud, brother. Much of this is your doing." Loki waved him off. "Hardly. I merely made a few arrangements. The people are doing all the work." "Hey, a good plan goes a long way." You interjected. "Well said." Thor nodded. "Things likely wouldn't be moving so smoothly if not for your strategy." He grinned. "Finally we found a useful purpose for that scheming mind of yours." Loki rolled his eyes. "We are turning a corner, I can feel it." Thor looked content as he sat back in his chair. "The future before us is bright."
For the first time in quite some time, Loki felt the same.

crack fanfic idea: Thor is blonde af
I want to read a fanfic where every chapter is just Thor Odinson replacing famous blondes in other media and all the surrounding characters are either hella confused or just totally go with it.
Thor replaces Elle Woods
Thor replaces Marilyn Monroe in Some Like it Hot (bonus points for the cross dressing!)
literally any Hitchcock blonde
Thor replaces Cher in Clueless, tries to fix up another Marvel character, ends up falling for Bruce Banner
Thor replaces Dolly Parton in Nine to Five
Thor replaces Elsa in Frozen, featuring a very reluctant Loki as Anna who’s trying to find Anna/Thor for some secret ulterior motive (Loki absolutely detests Olaf, Kristoff, and Sven)
Thor replaces Harley Quin.
Thor is still essentially Thor, he’s just also these other blonds. He’s still got mjolnir and thunder powers, he’s just in a new plot.

Alice in Neo Orleans
Alice Winchester- “Plucky” generally upbeat, but quick to anger and aggressive action/reaction. Also quick to forgive. A tomboy that got that winning, dimpled smile and powerful eyebrows that are constantly in motion as she IS super expressive. Talks with her hands. Talks more when she’s anxious or flabbergasted. Got all that and a boatload of wanderlust from mum. She sees everything as a grand adventure in a very Peter Pan-esque way, as that was her favorite childhood story and the one her mum used to read to her the most. Genuinely wants to “befriend” everyone and thinks only of satisfying her curiosity when approaching a stranger (so she has little to no bias or prejudices going into discourse/relationships…to the point of naivety). On the downside, her seeing potential for friendship in places and people that she lacks the tact/wisdom to interact with can go south real quick. Her brash audacity and careless bantering sometimes gets her and her real friends in a touch of trouble. A dark shade of caramel is how I would describe her skin. She had always been tallish AND stocky, too big for her age. “A bit girthy”, as her tactless father would always say, but now she was buff for some reason. All topped off with a massive, frizzy cloud of unkempt hair (when she initially wakes up from hibernation, at least) raining down and engulfing her pale green left eye, the stark contrast making it shine all the brighter. “Looks kinda like an Envy Zinnia blossom. A fresh one!” pops had once commented offhandedly. When she asked what that was, he just smiled in that irritating *pushes up glasses smugly* kinda way and said she should do the research herself. Her other eye was mechanical and still refusing to open as it’s system was still recovering from the cold, or it would’ve shone a bright golden hue straight through her dense, draping hair. She had specifically requested that her synthetic eye be golden, “cuz it would be badass!” The sterilized stasis maintenance jumpsuit she was wearing looked like something an actor from the 60’s would wear when pretending to be a futuristic cosmonaut. It was a light shade of sky blue, just like the dress of the character her father had demanded she be named after, Alice in Wonderland. She had always disliked Alice, commenting as a child “If it was me, I I I’d just beat up tha FAT-headed Queen and rule wondrousland maself!” with a harUMPH and crossed arms.
“A very Pan-esque thing to say.” Her mum would comment, smiling wryly.
That being taken into account, her favorite color was still sky blue. Thus, pops had colored her stasis suit that way, with a little Thor badge on her right shoulder and a Samurai fighting a Cowboy sticker on the left.
“…A few of my faaav-or-ite thiiings…” she whispered whimsically, continuing to hum the only song from Sound of Music she could ever remember. She stumbled about hazily, still adjusting to the dark laboratory/makeshift stasis chamber her father had built. She slowly realized her suit was way more tight-fitted than when she had went under, and her body felt waaaaaaaaay heavier. Bulkier. She looked down at her forearm and exclaimed,
“OH DAMN!” Pale eye bulging as she saw her now massive biceps stretching the material to its limits. It felt like each individual part of her she moved weighed twenty pounds more. She vaguely remembered her father describing some sort of rejuvenation oooor simulation process built into their pod’s functionality. “To keep us mentally and physically stimulated while we sleep” pops had said before she stopped listening all together, paying more attention to her PlayStation. Then she remembered.
Why she was the only one here.
Why she was alone.
Sven, her godfather and best friend, had murdered her dad.
Right in front of her.
Then he looked her dead in the eyes.
He had smiled as her father’s fresh blood still trickled down her horrified face.
Sven.
C.
English.
Just smiled and laughed.
The panic hit her full force then, bringing her to her knees.
Gameplay/Storyboard
The focuses would be developing Alice’s Evolution, gaining Archetypical Perks based on environmental and character interactions as well as plentiful resource gathering and an absurd number of crafting options.
* The overworld would function like a point and click adventure with Alice being able to highlight more or less objects/creatures based on how Observant her current Archetype is. When hovering over a highlighted object with the cursor, a translucent thought bubble will pop up above Alice’s head and a number of selectable options would appear inside. Combat could be called turn-based, where all engaged will decide their moves in advance. However, all choices made in the individuals’ decision phase will play out SIMULTANEOUSLY in the action phase. Example as follows:
Alice chooses to Attack with Fist (Bludgeon). When done with decision making, you simply wait for the other non-player decisions to be made. The Weakest Sewersauce also chooses to Attack, but with Spewed Blob (bludgeon)(ranged)(status). In the ensuing action phase, they both start to attack one another at the same time, but W. Sewersauce has higher action speed and it’s attack is ranged. This means it’s attack will hit Alice as she moves towards the W. Sewersauce and if her impact resistant is too low, SHE’LL HAVE TO BACKPEDAL *gasp*, ending her action prematurely so she won’t get to attack. All weapons combined with wielder strength have their own Stopping Power. Additionally, forward momentum decreases impact resistance, meaning Alice will be easier to pierce and ultimately take more damage.
ALTERNATIVELY
Alice chooses to React, planning a leftward dodge roll if the enemy attacks her. She has enough leftover Action Points to also plan Pick Up on nearby rock(object) and Attack with rock (bludgeon)(ranged). The Action Phase begins and the W. Sewersauce fires a Spewed Blob, which Alice successfully dodges. She also carries through with the rest of her planned counter, and since she is too far away for a melee with the rock, she’ll AUTOMATICALLY throw it at the target. With her ridiculous strength, the Weakest Sewersauce would not be able to resist impact and Die Immediately.
* AS YOU CAN SEE, planning ahead and awareness of Alice’s surroundings are the keys to victory in these combat engagements (but of course, it is possible to commit to the Barbaric Archetype, greatly increasing your impact resistance and allowing you to steamroll most normal opponents without much forethought at all).
* The overarching aesthetic of Neo Orleans is a bit intentionally confused, as there are a number of cultural and dimensional rifts forming in Orleans society when Alice arrives on scene. Overall, most of the surroundings would look like something out of the 20’s-50’s. The 20’s side of town would be the wealthier, Al’Terran side with more presence/reliance on magic in daily life. The 50’s side would be the “wrong side o’ the tracks”, tracing it’s origin to the Beastblooded Empire. More racially diverse and more technologically advanced, but also more ever present crime and more steeped in poverty (a large immigrant population from all different Realms on that side as well). The two sides would be divided by a literal wall down the middle of the city (yes. The Berlin Wall. Again), with tensions rising on both sides. Some examples of aesthetic…
There are MANY offworlders, though, and people/places/things from off world will have have their own unique styles and vibes. There would be the occasional medieval knight walking right next to a cyberish/steamish punkish goth. An alien tentacular beast floating right next to a wooden ship, itself flying about on magical, fluffy wings. A Norse mead hall right next to an Art Deco style skyscraper. Neo Orleans is meant to be chaotic and unpredictable, a character in and of itself.
Crafting-
All objects in game should be fusion capable, with at least one other basic or complex object.
The terrain, structures, objects (mostly everything) would be divided into invisible cubes that the objects exist inside. Every complex object in the environment, made up of basic objects, applies an impact resistance score to the invisible cube in which they reside. When the appropriate bludgeoning force is applied to trump this score, Alice will be able to theoretically Break pretty much anything and collect some of it’s core components.

Miraculous OC: Valkyria
Tumblr media
Presentation:
Hilda Cröm is a 14-15 year old teenage girl who works as barmaid in the tavern of her native village with her parents.
When she isn't at home, she watches Swordsmanship training sessions. Hilda desires to become a Swordmaster but women can't be admitted as warriors in her village (because of archaic laws written by the elders since many generations).
She has a crush for Harold Faramir, the adopted son of the Clan chief Faramir V also the heir for the throne.
In the village, she has friendship with:
Sven, a ginger-haired boy (15 years old).
Shuri (14 years old), a black girl who had escaped slave traders. Since, the tavern is her refuge.
Loth and Astrid, the twin siblings (16 years old).
Olaf and Arwen (both 9-10 years old).
Ulrick, the strong boy of the group. He is also comical (15-16 years old). He has a love interest on Ingrid Faramir.
About Ingrid Faramir, she's the biological daughter of Faramir V and Harold's adoptive sister. She is sometimes accompanied by three sidekicks. She is the rival and bully for Hilda.
Backstory:
The day when Hilda received the Ladybug miraculous, she walked in the beach at 2-3 miles away from home. She found there an unconscious stranded man named Thor. She rescues him by bringing back to the Chaman hut.
The saved man reveals to her he was a Asgardian retired prince who had travelled across the World as a warrior. During his journey, he obtained a magic box which is in fact the Miracle Box. His goal: To prevent the Jormangund cult, a evil sect commanded by a sorcerer called the Leviathan from stealing the box. Fascinated by Thor, Hilda requested him for take her as her apprentice but he refused.
Later, the village was attacked by Leviathan raiders. They came to steal the Miracle box and to assassinate Thor. Despite his not recovered yet condition, Thor set out to fight the raiders using the Dragon miraculous to slash them down. But in reason of his wounds, he is defeated by the remain raiders. Panicked, Hilda took out the Ladybug miraculous (without the autorization of the man in question) met Tikki the kwami of Creation and transformed herself into Valkyria, a viking-themed superheroine. She went to vainquish the last raiders, liberated her village and, with the help of the villagers (especially Harold), saved Thor (preventing him from his execution). With the Lucky charm, she reversed damages and restored victims attackers had caused previously.
After the battle, Thor thanked Valkyria (already knownledging she was Hilda under the form) and finally decided to secretly learn her to the Viking path as her apprentice.
The saga of Valkyria has begun.

CHAPTER 11
You slept like a baby that night in Loki’s study.  The chaise he directed you to was as comfortable as the bed, yet his study provided none of the loneliness that your bedroom did.  Try as you might, you could not seem to sleep in that room for more than a few minutes at a time.  You kept expecting James to burst through the door and bestow whatever punishment he deemed fit.  There was always punishment with him, and you were quite sure the one you would receive for what you had revealed to the kings so far would be the worst yet.  James might actually kill you this time.
Except he never came.  He never came, and you awoke in the morning with a wide stretch and lighter shoulders than the day before.  Loki was still asleep on his chair.  Long, lean legs were propped on the desk, keeping his chair rocked back at a more comfortable level.  His face was much less worried when he slept— smoother, younger, like a boy rather than a king with two realms to look after.  You decided then that he could not be that bad.  No one could look that calm while sleeping and be a tyrant…right?
Before you could figure it out, another wave of tiredness hit you, and you were out like a light.
Loki was not there when you awoke the second time.  His chair was vacated, still turned out to the side rather than pushed in.  You frowned at the display.  He was such a neat man, so you deduced he must have been in a hurry to have left it so.  A quick scan of the room found a green cape sticking out from the half-opened door.  You sat up and leaned forward, managing to catch the ins and outs of what seemed to be a rather heated conversation.
“… ridiculous!”  you heard Loki say.  “There must be somewhere else…”.  The rest of his sentence was lost in the rattle of a carriage passing outside the window.
“… isn’t!”  Ah.  That boom of a voice could only be Thor’s.  “He’s already been to—”
It was as though Loki could sense that you were listening.  More of the cape came into view until his entire torso appeared from behind the door.  He glanced over you from head to toe before returning to his brother.  A few more hushed words were exchanged before the door closed, and Loki came walking in.  He returned to his desk, taking a careful seat on the chair, but not before you saw him slip an envelope in with some other papers on his desk.
“How did you sleep?”
Your head snapped up.  “Huh?”  Loki gave you a patient smile.
“How did you sleep?” he repeated.  “Was the couch to your liking?  Do you need me to change it?”
“No, it was fine.  I slept well, thank you.”  The formality jumped out before you could stop it.  “I should return to my rooms now.  I’m sure you have a busy day.”
Loki sighed.  “Actually, I do.”  You were surprised by the disappointment that filled you.  “Something has come up that will require my attention for most of the day.  As luck would have it, Sven returned last night.  I’ve arranged for him to take you out to the town today.  You may stay as long as you want and take whomever you want.”
“You want me out of the palace?”
Loki frowned.  “I… No.  That’s not what I said.”  You could tell his mind was split between you and whatever situation had popped up.  There was a strange feeling in your gut that told you it had to do with you, and he was simply neglecting to tell you.  “I just thought you might want to go out.  The town is lovely, and no one will bother you once you’re with my guard.  Go enjoy yourself.  There is no one there that will harm you.”
You pondered his words for a bit.  Since your arrival, your movement had been self-restricted to palace grounds.  Sure, Sven had been gone lately, but it was by your own choice that you had stayed within the walls.  Maybe getting out would be good for you.
“Okay,” you agreed.  “I think that will be fun.”
“Excellent.”  Loki had already picked up a fresh piece of parchment and begun writing.  He was silent for a few seconds, and then his gaze rested on you.  “I don’t mean to kick you out—”  You got to your feet.
“You’re busy.  I understand.”
“I’m sorry.  I need to deal with this.”
“It’s okay.”  You already had the blanket folded and tucked neatly in the corner of the chair.  Without even meeting his eyes, you slipped on your shoes and made for the door.  “Thanks again for letting me stay.”
“Lady Dee.”  His tone was firm.  You turned around to face him, almost expecting him to be mad at you.  There was calm collection on his face instead.  “I meant what I said yesterday.  Should you find yourself unable to sleep, my door is always open.”  He paused to look you directly in the eye.  “Do not be afraid to take advantage of that offer.”
ooOOoo
Your day out on the town was much better than anticipated.  Instead of asking Darcy, you decided to go alone so you could talk with Sven.  He seemed much more relaxed than when he left, and you wanted a chance to pick his brain.  You also needed to apologize for inadvertently ruining his date.
“I’m glad you agreed to come out with me,” you told him as you strolled through the town on his arm.  “It would have been fine if you wanted to stay behind.  I know the king asked, but—”
“Nonsense.  I wanted to come.”  Sven pat your hand.  “Besides, I have to get a gift for Kari.  Her birthday is coming up, and there are these eggshell-based paints she’s been talking nonstop about.”
You smiled to yourself at that.  Sven was back to his chipper self, and you couldn’t be more grateful.  “I’m also really sorry I made you miss your date.  Did Erik write to you?  He said he was going to.”
“There’s no need for apologies, Miss Dee.  You need to believe me when I say that none of this was your fault.”  Sven gave you a pointed look.  “And Erik did write to me.  I wrote back to him to inform him of my return.”
You could not help but ask.  “Did you set another date?”  Sven side-eyed you.  “Sorry.  I don’t mean to pry.”
“Quite alright, Miss Dee.  No, we have not set another date.  I quite like the way things are now.”  He led you over to a little tent manned by an elderly lady.  There was a fair in town that day, and lots of vendors had come to sell their wares.  This one seemed to be selling the paints he mentioned before.  “Ah!  Here we are!”  He motioned to the rows of colour set in little pots of tin.  “Pretty, are they not?”
“Yes,” you had to agree.  Though you wanted to push for more information on him and Erik, you respected when a barrier was put in place.  Sven had done just that.  “Is she a painter?  I had no idea.”
“My sister is an excellent artist.  It’s a talent she shares with my mother.  When she was a child, my mother used to paint little cards and pictures to sell at fairs like this.  She took Kari once she was born until my father put a stop to it.”  At your puzzled look, Sven explained.  “She was trying to earn enough money to leave him.  He caught on and forbade her from going.”
That piece of information filled you with even more hatred towards the vile man.  “Your mother sounds like a wonderful woman.”
“Best woman I’ve ever known— Oh, thank you.  Yes, these.  Thank you so much.”  Sven passed the woman ten silver coins— though you noticed the price was seven– and told her to keep the change.  “Anything caught your eye?”
“Hmm?”
Sven gestured to the wide range of tents you had yet to visit.  “There must be something here that tickles your fancy.  What do you like?  Clothes?  Shoes?”
“I think the king sent me enough clothing and shoes to last a lifetime.”  Sven gave you a wry grin.
“Jewelry it is, then.”  He led you to a yellow and white striped tent overflowing with all sorts of trinkets.  There was jewelry as far as the eye could see.  Thick, chunky necklaces to statement rings, jingling anklets, and hair-thin, woven bracelets.  It made your head spin to be in the proximity of so many choices.  “What do you prefer?”
Well, that was a question you could not answer.  James controlled everything about you, right down to what you wore.  He selected your dresses, underwear, jewelry…You never had a chance to figure out what you liked.  You never had a chance to figure out who you were.
“Umm…”.  Your fingers dug into your palms, willing the tears welling in your eyes not to fall.  “Umm… I don’t…”
“It’s alright.”  Sven stepped in front of you to block you from the rest of the crowd.  He grabbed ahold of your elbow and rubbed soothing circles to calm you.  “It’s okay.  There are a lot of options and it’s easy to get overwhelmed.  Let’s just browse, and you tell me if there’s anything that catches your eye, okay?”
“Okay.”  You wiped your nose and rested your head on Sven’s shoulder, letting your eyes roam over the tables as your feet followed his path.  A few items did intrigue you, namely the thinner necklaces with lone pendants and simple studded earrings.  Still, nothing to make you want to spend some of the pile of gold coins that appeared on your dressing table that morning with a note bearing the king’s insignia.  Nothing, at least, for yourself.  “I like those.”
Sven followed your pointed finger to a pair of dangly earrings that would go perfectly with the purple dress you had already decided to give to Darcy.  “Wonderful.  Though, I wouldn’t have pegged you for such a chunky piece.”
“It’s for Darcy,” you told him, already spotting a necklace that would look lovely on Jane.  You found it easier to shop for others than yourself.  Perhaps, in selecting stuff for them, you might happen across something you liked for yourself.  “Do you want anything?  Maybe a nice bracelet?”
“I’m fine, Miss Dee.  Never was one for jewelry.”
“Oh.  Do men not wear jewelry here?”  In retrospect, you had not seen any men wearing charms or other adornments of the like in Asgard.  Back home, some commanders wore rings or cuffs with symbols of their authority.
“Some do.  The nobles, the higher-ups.  King Loki wears it too.”  That caught your attention.
“He does?  What kind?”
Sven shrugged.  “It depends on his mood, but I’ve seen him wear rings and bracelets with his insignia.  The king likes pretty things.”  His eyes darted to you.  “Yourself included.”
You coughed to hide your blush.  “Stop teasing.”  Sven looked taken aback.
“I’m not.  I swear—”
“So he likes jewelry.  Anything else?”
“Eyeliner,” Sven told you.  “He wears it when he’s in his feminine form.”
“The king has a feminine form?”
“Yes.  The king is fluid,” Sven informed you, “but if you want to know more about it, you’ll have to ask him.”
“Noted.”  You spied it then, a thick black band held together by an intricately carved golden snake with emeralds for eyes.  “Does King Loki like snakes?”
“Ha!  Many would say he’s one himself.”  The response came not from Sven but a passerby.  “Heard he can turn into one himself.”  He turned yellowed, leering eyes on you.  “Thinking of getting it for him?  The king won’t care for such things.  He’s a king!”  The man gave a drunken laugh.  “You think fake gold will impress him!”
“Ugh!  You again!”  The dark-skinned woman who owned the tent came over with a straw broom.  She hit the man with a solid blow to the buttocks and began driving him into the street.  “Get out!  Stop harassing my customers and leave the poor girl alone!”
Sven leaned down to your ear.  “I could not have handled that better myself.”  He surveyed your face, noting the indecisiveness that had set in.  “Hey.  If you want to get that for him, you can.  Don’t let what that drunk said sway you.”  You frowned.
“He has a point, doesn’t he?  Loki is a king.  I do not wish to insult him by—”
“How would that insult him?  It’s not what the gift costs but the intent.  Why do you want to give this to him?”
You paused.  “Because he’s been kind to me.  He believed me and is looking out for me and has made every effort to ensure my comfort.  I just wanted to say thank you and let him know his actions have not gone unnoticed.”  Sven smiled.
“In that case, I think you should get it for him.  I believe he’ll appreciate it.  But it’s up to you, and you don’t have to decide now.”  He gestured to the rest of the street, lined with tents and many, many more stores to explore.
You eyed the bracelet with weariness.  “I suppose we can always return.”
The shopkeeper who had chased away the man reached where you were.  She saw how you looked at the bracelet and said, “I can put that on hold for you if you like.  Lots of customers like to make the rounds before deciding.”
“You’d do that for me?”  You were touched by her kindness.  “What if someone else wants it?  I wouldn’t want you to lose a sale because of me.”
“Dear, don’t be silly.  Lots of people do this.”  She plucked the bracelet from the selection on the table and closed the lid, hiding the piece from view.  “Take your time.  If you’re not back in three hours for it, I’ll put it back on sale.  This way you have time to decide.”
“Thank you very much,” you told her.  “Really.”
She gave you a small smile, already turning to deal with another customer.  Sven took advantage of this to turn your attention to a small cart a few feet away.
“Come.  Let’s get something to eat.  I’m positively famished.”
ooOOoo
Loki sighed hard and pushed the papers away from him.  He reached up to stretch his arms, wincing when he heard his back crack in three separate places.  It had taken all day and most of the evening, but he had done it.  He had found a way to deter Barnes’ request to come to Asgard without arousing suspicion and without letting you know.  He knew he would have to tell you soon.  You had already gotten so much of your autonomy taken away that he was loathe to keep this information from you.  The thing is, he just could not come to you with more problems.  He also needed to have a solution, and finally, he did.
“Well, I think this will work.”  Thor clapped him on his back.  “Rerouting him through the other realms to find out who sent the shipment.  Plus, it will give us a chance to find out more without letting him know we’re on to him.  Good job, brother!”
“Thank you.”  Loki let out some air through his nose.  “It’s late.  Night is almost here.”  You should have been back by now.  Maybe you were.  He was unsure why, but he thought you would have sent word of your return.  It was a stupid idea, now that he mulled it over.  You did not have to keep him up to date on every movement you made.
“Would you like to have dinner with us?  Jane and myself and Darcy—”
Loki interjected, “I should go over these plans and see they’re carried out.”  He picked up his worn feathered pen and frowned at the blunt tip.
“Are you sure?  Jane invited Lady Dee and she accepted.  Don’t be rude to our guest, brother.”  His head popped up.
“Lady Dee is going to be there?  Since when?”
“Since Jane asked her and she accepted.  The page boy that came in a while ago?  He delivered me a note from her informing me of this.”  Thor paused, brow furrowing.  “She also asked me to speak with my inside voice tonight.  I was not aware I had an outside voice.”
Loki snapped his fingers in front of his brother’s face.  “Brother, focus.  Why didn’t you tell me she would be attending dinner tonight?”
“I didn’t know I was supposed to,” Thor protested.  “Why would I?  Besides, it’s just supper—”
“Yes, but supper is in twenty minutes.  I’m a mess!  I need to bathe and change my clothes and— Why are you looking at me like that?  Is something funny to you?”
“Yes.”  Thor’s smile was so wide that Loki swore it would split in half.  “I haven’t seen you so anxious about a prospective lover since we were boys.”
Loki's eyes widened.  “S-she- she’s not—”
“Nor have I seen you trip over your words like that.  Interesting.”  Loki caught himself then, willing his tongue to relax and his features to go be neutral.
“She is not a prospective lover,” he retorted, “and I am not tripping over my words.  Sometimes your oafishness surprises even me and it takes me awhile to recover.  That’s all.”
“Mhm-mhm, yeah.”  Thor gave an exaggerated nod.  “Of course, brother.  And will you be wearing your wedding formal to dinner tonight or your usual ceremonial get-up?”
“Alright, that’s it.”  Loki waved his hand at the doors.  They flung open, signaling to Thor that his extended stay was over.  “Get out.”
The corners of the blond god’s mouth turned down.  “Brother.”
“Out.  I mean it.”
“I was only joking,” Thor explained as he trudged towards the door.  “You make jokes all the time.  I thought you’d appreciate it!”
Loki turned his head as his brother left.  He remained silent until the heavy footsteps receded and the double doors of his sanctuary closed, leaving him to himself.  Only then did he look at the grandfather clock placed strategically across the room.  Noting the time, he waved a hand over his desk to tidy the mess and made for his bedroom.
Fifteen minutes until supper time.
ooOOoo
You were already at dinner when Loki arrived— late, but dressed in clean clothing that would not seem too over the top.  He wore a pair of leather breeches and a new tunic, one of a few made by the finest tailor in all of Agard that he had yet to wear before tonight.  You didn’t see him when he entered at first.  Darcy had your attention, prattling on and on in a rather voluptuous dress and some gaudy earrings.  It was only when he pulled out a seat— purposely letting it scrap the floor a bit— did you finally glance in his direction.
“My king!”
“Loki,” he reminded you.  “Just Loki.”
“Loki.”  He liked the way you said his name.  There was no threat behind it, no sense of impending request or snarky comeback.  Most people who used his name either wanted something from him or brought him problems to solve.  You did not.  There was nothing you wanted from him, and because of that, he found himself wanting to give you everything.
“Did you have a good time today, Lady Dee?”
“Yes, I—Oh, thank you.”  A server came to refill your glass, effectively butting into the conversation.  Your show of gratitude took the servant aback.  The dining room servants weren’t used to being thanked or even noticed by the nobles.  As far as they were concerned, it was their job, so most of them did not even mind the treatment.  You, however, had no clue the unspoken rule existed, much to the shock of the poor server.  He stuttered out a thank you and moved to the king.
“Thank you.”  Where the server’s eyes were wide before, they now bulged out of his head.  Loki swore he saw the boy’s hands tremble.  “You can move on, now.  Lady Dee?”
“Hmm?” you asked, glass poised at your mouth.
“You haven’t answered my question.”
“Oh.”
Loki noticed that Darcy had long relinquished your attention, now pestering Jane and Thor about babies instead.  He bit his lip and picked up his fork to dig into the fresh plate of food that appeared as though from thin air.  That was another thing about the servers: they flew well under the radar.  “Tell me about your day.”
“It was lovely,” you replied.  “There was a fair in town today.  I’ve never seen one before, so I’m glad I decided to go.  We never had things like these back on Earth.”  You paused to spoon some food into your mouth, and Loki noticed something peculiar.  The way you chewed was unsettling.  It was as though you were trying to make the food last as long as possible.
“You can ask for seconds if you want,” he informed you.
You paused like a deer caught in the pathway of an arrow.  “What?”
“Nothing,” he replied after a few seconds had passed.  Your eating habits were obviously a reflection of your treatment from Barnes and the last thing he wanted was to make you feel embarrassed.  “It’s nothing.  You were saying there weren’t any fairs on Earth?”
“Not that I can remember,” you told him, a little less stricken than before.  “Some of the other girls, like Sharon and Betty, they tell me they used to have fairs all the time before.  They were different, though.  I heard they had rides and food and cotton candy—”
“Cotton candy?” Loki echoed.  “What is that?”
“Oh, it’s…” You broke off with a frown.  Your eyes slid down to your plate, fork chasing a pea across the golden material.  “Honestly, I’ve never had it.  Just heard about it.  Sharon loved it.  Before all of this, before the commanders took over and the world went to shit,” Loki ignored the remnant resentment in your voice, “Steve used to take her.”
“Steve?” Loki blinked.  “As in the asshat commander I have in my basement?”  You nodded.  “I don’t understand.”
A sigh escaped you— longing, regretful, as though you were lost in a bout of nostalgia— then you snapped back to the present.  “Well—”
“Dee!”  Darcy’s squeal cut you off.  Annoyed, Loki turned to the source.
“What?”
“Don’t bite my head off, horn boy.  I just had an idea.”  She placed her hand on yours, a gesture Loki noted did not make you jump, and said, “Why don’t we all go for a walk in the gardens so Dee can see the things the flowers do?”
“Oh!”  You placed your cup down with a little bang.  “Is that what you were telling me about the other day?  You mentioned something about flowers.”
“Yes, it is.”  Loki turned to the curly-haired girl with an impressed look.  “That’s a wonderful idea.”  Darcy made a face.
“Don’t sound so surprised.  I’m pretty intelligent by Earth standards.”  She turned to Jane and Thor.  “You guys in?”
Jane gave a fatigued smile, “I’m afraid not.” She had been tired a lot lately.  Probably because his brother could not keep his hands off his new bride.  He did not miss the days when they shared a wall.  Sometimes, late at night, he could still hear the faint, repetitive banging of a headboard echoing in his mind.
“Yes, Jane and I must retire to bed.  Our wedding tour begins tomorrow.”
“Wedding tour?”  The attention turned to you, and you immediately blanched.  “F-forget it.”
“No, it’s a good question,” Thor assured you.
“Yeah, I wasn’t sure what it was either,” Jane added.  “Loki can explain it to you.”  Jane rose to her feet, helped by Thor as he held her chair.  “Night, guys.”
“Brother,” Thor clapped him on the back.  “I’ll come find you in the morning before I leave.  We have things to discuss.”
“Of course.”  They left hand in hand, in that nauseating way that happily married couples liked to do.  Loki’s parents would do that once upon a time.  He himself could not understand it.  “Shall the three of us-”
“Hey, you know what?” Darcy cut him off.  “I actually forgot I have plans.”  Loki narrowed his eyes.
“Plans?  So late?”
“I could have a gentleman caller,” she retorted.  “Not everyone wants to be alone like you.”  She turned to you with an apologetic glance.  “Dee, I’m so sorry.”
You waved her off.  “It’s okay.  I can see the flowers some other time.”
Perhaps it was the disappointment on your face.  Or how you fought to keep the corners of your mouth from turning down and your eyes from tightening.  Whatever it was, it filled Loki’s chest with a sense of discomfort that grew and grew until his mouth opened and out came, “I can take Lady Dee to the gardens.  Feel free to retire.”
“Oh, that would be great!  Thanks, Loki!”  She rushed off behind Jane and Thor, but not before patting Loki on the head in a way she knew would annoy him.  He decided, just for the fun of it, to lock her out of her room for an hour or two the next day.
“You don’t have to do that,” came your quiet voice once all other parties had left.  “I don’t want to be a bother, and I’m sure you’re tired from today.”  Loki tilted his head in question.  “The situation you had to deal with today.  I’m sure it wore you out, and I don’t want to take away from your rest time.”
Loki was knackered, wholly and completely so.  He had not slept on his bed in three days now, and all he wanted was to lie beneath the covers and finish that volume on dream walking his mother never let him read as a child.  Yet, “No,” he said, “I’m not tired.  Rather restless, to be frank.  I think a walk in the gardens would do me good.”
“Are you sure?”
He stood, pushing back his empty plate and placing his napkin on the table.  A few short strides took him over to you.  “Lady Dee, you must learn to stop doubting me.  Now,” he held out his arm, “will you be joining me, or do I have to stroll the gardens alone?”

Reginald nodded "he was a nice man, you even got his name, his name was also Sven, if I remember properly that why your second name is Svensson"
(I don't know if that was your intention but that probably was the original intention in the game, because that was an actualy swedish/viking thing, that's even Thor's name is Thor odinson)
(Oooh lol. So like, he is Sven Jr. :))

Ok, but what if Loki has ADHD brain and just cannot remember that he is a Jotun? He spends his whole baby and child years accidentally growing really huge or freezing his wet-nurse solid or generally just getting up to Not-Aesir Hijinks(tm) and Everyone Knows. And they tell him. Multiple times! And each time it’s a total shock!!!! Loki is Big Shook!!!!! And so is Thor, who has an EVEN WORSE memory.
Eventually it becomes a meme. People start betting on how long it will be until they hear, “How long have you hidden this from me, Father!!!!!!” At top volume. Usually in the middle of the night, because of course Loki always Finds Out The Hidden Truth at the worst and most dramatic time possible.
