A 500 Days of Summer appreciation post because the shots and cinematography of this movie are delectable. P.S. Paul is literally me.

my toxic trait is " I can give pages of logical arguments on why Summer Finn did the right thing".

"You know what… I say to hell with it! Let’s level with America. Or at least make them speak for themselves! I mean, seriously, what’s this… (picks a card off the table) “Congratulations on your new baby.” Eh … How bout … “Congratulations on your new baby… Guess that’s it for hanging out. Nice knowing ya.

(picks up a card) Oh wait, what’s this? Ooh look at all the pretty hearts. Let’s open it up. “Happy Valentine’s Day, Sweetheart. I love you.” Oh that’s nice. Aint love grand? (beat) See this is what I’m talking about. What’s that even mean, “love?” Do you know? Do you? Does anyone? If someone gave me this card, Mr. Vance … I would eat it. It’s these cards and these movies and these pop songs. They’re to blame for all the lies, the heartache, everything! We’re responsible! (beat) I’m responsible.

I think we do a bad thing here. People should be able to say how they feel, how they really feel, without some strangers putting words in their mouths. Words like “love” that don’t mean shit. I’m sorry Mr. Vance, but I quit. There’s enough bullshit in the world without my help."

after i finished watching 500 days of summerr, I looked up "500 Days of Summer BPD" bec tom gave me huge bpd vibes like the boundaries and favorite person thing... but people thought it was summer?? summer just lacks a little empathy at times and can be misleading... Like what.

on the outside i look like i'm doing alright but on the inside i am feeling the urge to rewatch 500 days of summer. everyone has their demons

I saw 500 days of summer when I was in my teens. And there was this, really, really intense feeling of love for Summer, which I didn't understand then, a feeling which was squashed to hate when in the end she married someone.

Years later, now that I've realised that I am aromantic allosexual, i also came to realise the reason why I loved Summer so much. It was because she was the first character I'd seen which was like, yes, I do want the sex and hugs and all the cute stuff, but I don't want the romance, I don't want to say I love you and such. And a part of me was like, yes, that is me, god, it's finally great to see someone who's different (i.e. alloaro).

But then at the end, she goes and marries somebody. And I didn't not like her because she left the protagonist, but because she went and said I love you to someone else, because, eventually what her character portrayed was the age-old argument against queer people – "you just haven't found the right person yet, and when you do, your mind will change!"

Like literally every piece of media shoves amatonormativity down our throats, openly or subtly. And I'm just so. Fucking tired of it.

too many people interpret 500 days of summer as this “nice guys finish last” movie that paints summer as the villain and tom as the victim. however, it’s supposed to be like that. the film is the writers way of processing his own grief and is essentially his own story and point of view, so of course he’s going to see the girl that broke his heart as a villain. the film is self aware bc it showcases tom as an unreliable narrator (when he is in love with summer, he points out what he loves about her, but when they break up he points out the same things to be what he hates about her). the film was never about tom being the victim and summer being the villain. it’s about being myopic and seeing things through a limited perspective. we never see summers pov, and if we did the movie would be a lot different. that’s what we as the audience need to understand. we can’t trust tom to truthfully and completely tell the story, because we only see his pov, the same way that we can only see things from our perspective. even if someone is so seemingly perfect for you, they might not see you in the same way, and you can’t make them out to be a villain because of that. romance doesn’t solve all your problems, and the sooner you realize that, the happier you’ll be.
