the legends of localization book has reawakened my love for the nuances of translation and now i REALLY wanna take all the undertale dialogue and narration and translate it into french. for funsies
#i know i know french bad and all that. fair. but also: it's the only other language i know and am good enough at to feasibly do something#like this#dr could be fun too. i've got some ideas knocking around for that as well#the intricacies between characters of which would call frisk tu right off the bat and which would use vous#and the point in the game at which the latter characters would switch to vous.#mettaton's dialogue wouldn't be fun though. there are VERY few gender neutral terms of endearment#that serve as a good stand-in for 'darling' in french#very few gender-neutral terms in french at all honestly. but that's beside the point#maybe since french people are accustomed to a certain amount of english in their media#for example 'battle time' and 'game is over' in off and the like#i could just keep darling in places. it might be easier to have him use gendered terms of endearment#for people other than frisk. i'm thinking 'ma belle' for alphys. just affectionately. my grade 5 french teacher#who was from france#used to call me and the other girls in our class that affectionately#i mean. i wasn't a girl really. but you get it#ooh and i wonder what pronouns napstablook should use. i know there are community-made#nonbinary pronouns in french#such as ol and iel#they seem like an ol to me#i know many nby people aren't happy about iel since it's a mashup of il and elle#and therefore still built around a binary#and i totally get that but i don't think they're useless or actively harmful as pronouns! i'm sure there are some who like them and use#them#seam seems like an iel to me tbh#anyways this has been my short ramble about how i would go about localizing undertale into french. thank you very much for listening. bows

Commenting some of the French singular 3rd person neutral pronouns
iel: lovechild of il and elle. kinda sounds like you were about to say il and then switch to elle not to misgender the person going by elle (or not to out them). Pisses people off and made Brigitte, a former French teacher, forget there are a whole lot more than 2 pronouns in French lmfao. We stan. 10/10
ielle: fem presenting iel. We also stan. 10/10
ille: unsure whether it's supposed to rhyme with "il", "quille" or the latin "ille". 12/10 if pronounced like the latin ille, 9/10 if pronounced like (qu)ille (hard to say smoothly in a sentence), 10/10 if pronounced like il (very stealth as long as not written)
ol: aesthetically the best after ça. 11/10
il impersonnel: the sexiest motherfucker on earth. has the benefit of being both canon and stealth af. 10k/10 (not giving it an advantage because it's the one I use what do you mean. I remain objective at all times u_u)
on: after years in elementary school of teachers scolding us not to use it because of how imprecise and confusing it is, how much of a power move is it to reclaim it and use it in its rightful 3rd person way instead of letting it stay the bastardized 1st person? 12/10

how exactly does the they them thing work in french?
clunkily mostly. theres neutral pronouns (most used i think atm are iel/ielle for singular, and iels/ielles for plural, but i also know there's ol/ols) but the difficulty is really with the gendering of adjectives and some other words (participles for example). most ppl i think pick whichever (linguistic) gender they want ppl to use for them (feminine, masculine, both), but there's no true neutral. idk how thats gonna evolve, if someone's gonna invent a new neutral gender and grammar rules for it or if its just gonna go on like this or, idk, something else? but rn thats mostly how it works i think
explanation to take with a grain of salt bc i am french but i speak english in my daily life and very rarely french anymore, and dont really have the occasion to use neutral pronouns when i do. also personally i just use the she/her equivalent in french bc it's less hassle

Tio signifas ke, se mi diras ke mi volas analogan vivon, mi diras ke mi anstataŭigos ciferecaĵojn per analogaĵoj kaj jen ĉio.
Ĉiuokaze, pri kio mi parolas ĉi tie estas pli ampleksa, rilatas al signifo de "analogeco" kiun mi, serĉante pri tio, vidis: io ajn kio ne estas cifereca estas analoga. Tio signifas ke skribi per skribmaŝino anstataŭ per komputilo estas analogaĵo, sed per papero kaj krojono ankaŭ estas; pentri per peniko kaj pigmento anstataŭ per programaro ankaŭ estas analogaĵo; kroĉetadi estas analogaĵo, ludi pianon estas analogaĵo. Kion anstataŭigi
Sed montriĝas ke por mi kaj ne estas tiom da aferoj anstataŭigeblaj kaj estas aferoj neanstataŭindaj. Mia cifereca agado estas simpla, malmultnombra, ne estas tiom da diverseco. Mi per studado, Jutuba spektado, pensa skribado kaj aŭdovidredaktado povas resumi kion mi faras ciferece. Kvar aferoj entute. Sed eĉ ne estas la malalta kvanto kio plej malĝojigas min, sed tio ke mi ŝatus analogigi aferojn neanalogigeblajn.
Mia studado estas per interreta serĉado. Anstataŭigi tian studadon estas alivorte aĉetadi librojn kaj librojn, kio estas tre malfeliĉe mone neebla por mi, krom la reteja artikoloj, kiuj ne ekzistas en libro, kvankam mi povas presi ilin. Pri aŭdovidredaktado mi eĉ ne bezonas klarigi: kiel mi redaktus audaĵon ciferecan analoge? La samo pro Jutuba spektado. Jen la sola afero perfekte analogigebla, mi la afiŝojn surpapere skribus reskribonta ĉe Tumblr; la sama refaro plenumeblas por Obsidian. Ha, kiel mirinde estus fari tion per skribmaŝino! Ne ke analogigo devas esti tiel, sed skribmaŝino estas la perfekta paralelaĵo de skribado per komputilo. Sed mi devas iom ŝpari por iun aĉeti. Rutinorganizo estas farebla analoge! nun mi pensis.
Kaj estas io kio estas vere malavantaĝo en analogigado: taŭgecomanko.
Taŭgecomanko
Unu el la aferoj kiun oni diras priparolante la pasintecon estas ke "la mondo funkciis pli malrapide tiam". Estas ĝuste tio, ciferecaĵoj estas nekontasteble pli rapidaj ol analogaĵoj, krom la malgrandega spacuzo. Iri al analoga vivo prenos longan tempon de mia tago. Skribi perpapere, ekzemple, estas tri-, kvaroble pli malrapide ol perkomputile. Ĉi-kaze, estas tiom da aferoj pri kiuj mi povas paroli, ke mi preferas fari apartan afiŝon por ĉi tio.
Ĉi tiu pli longa plenumado tamen ne igas min forlasi la ideon. I don't know about other multilingual non-binary folks but personally I don't use the same terms in my 1st language (French) and in English.
In English what I say first is that I'm a "non-binary man". In French I just start by saying I'm "non-binaire", which means exactly what you think.
I feel like in French it's more important to initiate by stating I'm non-binary rather than to directly bring up the fact I'm male-aligned. It's a mix of different reasons : "non-binary" sums up more clearly that I'm not "just a man", and in a country where non-binary stuff hasn't been super normalized yet I feel like it's more understandable than "non-binary man" for people who have barely looked into gender identities.
As for my pronouns, I do use il/lui, which is our he/him. However French only has gendered versions of "they" based on our feminine 3rd pronoun elle/elle and our masculine 3rd person pronouns il/lui. And we do not have an official neutral pronoun per se. So I use neo-pronouns, but not the most popular one, which is "iel". I don't use iel for myself as I don't like how it's just a mix of the feminine and masculine pronouns. Instead I use ol/lo, which is a kinda old neo-pronouns based on Latin ❢ It was created as a "more accurate neutral pronoun" based on Latin (as French comes from this language), since we officially just use masculine stuff to be "neutral".
On the topic of pronouns, since we have gendered words that can change the pronouns of someone (if a woman is a doctor it's still "un docteur" so we use il/lui), and our only official way of being "neutral" is using the masculine, people understand more easily that pronouns don't equal gender, so sometimes I just say my pronouns are il/lui and leave it at that.
Of course when I'm with someone who is more well-versed into non-binary identities I go "oh I'm boyflux/genderflux, it's like a gradient of male to genderless where I move more or less toward one end" ; I just keep things to "non-binary" when I'm around some tolerant yet kinda confused people IRL.

This episode of omitb was A LOT of info to take in a short amount of time… what was that ending??? It caught me so off guard. I am also kinda shipping Poppy/Mabel after this ep. Alice is a complete asshole. This episode did have a lot of funny moments tho. I honestly don’t know who could be the killer… my bets were on Alice but I think that’s changed now.
P.S. Il y a un an, j’ai vu un post que vous avez fait concernant les terminaisons des mots et le genre en français… je suis francophone et je n’ai pas la réponse. Ça m’achale de ne pas le savoir. i agree, i thought alice was the killer when she first appeared, but now i’m thinking she is just an asshole but not a murderer. i feel sad for mabel, everyone thinks she’s a bad person - a murderer, a person who stabs people on the train, "bloody mabel", or apparently a person who maybe cuts people’s fingers off (that was a strange detail!). i’m happy someone else likes the Poppy/Mabel moments!!
P.S. non, je sais pas la réponse. il y a des personnes qui utilisent des neo-pronouns (neo-pronoms? jsp) comme "iel" et "ol", mais, si je comprends bien, il n’y a pas de réponse sur laquelle tout la monde s’accorde. et aussi - je sais pas le mot en français, peut-être un "suffix"? "le suffixe" dit Google… hmm, les lettres à la fin d’un mot, les lettres qui changent quand on conjugue un verb - on peut utiliser "eux" ou "é.e" ou "x"… c’est la même problème, il n’y a pas une réponse parfaite.
maintenant j’étudie la psychologie à l’université à Melbourne, j’ai pas beaucoup de temps libre et mes notes sont pas bonnes - en d’autres mots, j’utilise DuoLingo et c’est tout à le moment. peut-être le prochain semestre, je pourrais prendre une classe de français. je devrais vraiment pratiquer plus souvent - i’m certainly not very good at french haha. bonne journée !

I like iel dont get me wrong, but English has a bunch of gender neutral pronouns like zey/zir, xe/xir, or e/em, so why not create more for the French language as well? Potentially one that works better phonetically?
One of my critic of iel is that it works worse that il and elle phonetically. What makes il and elle works is the combinaison of a distinctive, basic vowel with a L making a liaison with "est".
On the other hand, iel has a "yeu" sound more difficult to prononce than just a simple vowel.
So let me introduce you to
Ul/Ux pronouns.
"Ul est fantastique. Je suis allé chez ux après la course."
I wanted something easy to pronounce, a basic vowel + L which would not lead to grammar confusion. That ruled out A as Al would be confused with "à l'". The closed O of an Ol pronoun was not of my liking.
Remained U, a basic vowel that definitly stands out and is not a word in French already like à/a, ou or au. Ux is pronounced U in pure French fashion. The x is there for the resemblance with eux. That would help people to figure out the meaning at the first encounter.
So here we are, this ends my quest to create a gender neutral pronoun in French better than iel (based on my criteria).
Feel free to use Ol or Al if you like them of course, or to create your own French gender neutral pronouns, the sky the limit.

TBH c'est super intéressant les discussions sur les neopronoms et les pronoms neutres.
Pour autant, ça m'agace beaucoup le "il faudrait mieux utiliser y ou ça" ou "il faudrait mieux utiliser ul, ol" (ou iel, ielle, etc.).
Parce que... bah... idée comme ça hein. Pourquoi on serait obligé d'en utiliser un et un seul ?

Konsiderinte la nombron da knaboj al kiujn li rigardis je la espero, ke li estis faranta tiu flirtumada afero korekte, oni povus diri, ke li estis tre bone praktikita kaj pretigita por trafi iun ajn, iutempe ke ĉio, kion li faradis ĝis nun estis malsukcesi.
