Hey all. I'm sorry to be doing this again but I once again got fucked over by a combo of overdraft fees & an automatic payment for my surgery bill, of which came to a total of $144.

On Saturday I sold a variety of books, CDs, video games and toys to my local used bookstore and got $80. I also made $20 doing surveys online. I was already in the negatives & all this money went towards trying to ease that situation. Unfortunately all of that was for naught after the overdraft fees & the auto draft (to be more specific the medical bill was $36 and it was 3 overdraft charges for $36 each, so yeah)

I understand anyone who's just like "nah I don't wanna help you're just irresponsible". I feel like a lot of my friends feel that way about me at this point but I really am trying my hardest to get my shit together. I used to be horrified at the idea of asking for help but now I'm just kinda numb because I don't know what else to do. Short of making an only fans or something like that, I feel like I'm trying to do everything that I'm mentally/physically capable of doing to get 'extra' money.

All of my subscriptions minus crunchyroll are cancelled, I just got a quote for much cheaper car insurance so I'll get that switched over soon. No worries! I fuckin' love talking about D&D and my campaign, thank you for giving me the opportunity.

So for tools we use to play D&D -- we currently run D&D in Foundry. It has an up-front cost ($40, no subscription), but only requires a single license and then the DM can host it on their machine while everyone else connects. It has a TON of modules that allow you to customize it, including a DND beyond importer.

That said, it does cost, y'know, money. We switched to foundry for the post-Curse of Strahd campaign. Originally for Curse of Strahd we actually used roll20. Roll20 is free, but there were minor things that I didn't like about it that caused me to switch.

But if cost is your concern or you're just doing a oneshot and don't want to invest, go for roll20 imo. If you do, HIGHLY recommend you install the VTT enhancement suite and Beyond20 (if you use D&D Beyond) which improve the site immensely.

For the maps -- I vary what I use. I use the following tools and programs:

My own hands

Azgaar's Fantasy Map Generator is what I usually use to create a baseline for a world map, including a first draft of town and country names. I'll treat it like a rough draft before taking it into photoshop, drawing over it, and adjusting it to my liking. I generated the base of my game's world map in Azgaar's before I drew over it and adjusted it to fit my needs.

Watabou's City Generator is actually built into Azgaar's to some extent (click on any town name and it'll give you a link), but you can generate it manually, too! I used to use it to generate the city maps I'd give to my players. Here's an example of Thatking, the capital of Zarova (formerly Treteria). For reference -- the party fought the Queen here, and Kjosev died in the Citadel.

Nowadays, when I build cities, I actually use the next website on the list -- Inkarnate. I'll might use Watabou's for a base, but I use Inkarnate for polish.

Inkarnate is extremely good at two things: cities, and open-world battlemaps. Here's the lizardfolk capital of Savegoria, Paign! It's where Yolihuali is from. I built it solely through Inkarnate.

One of the things I like about Inkarnate is that it lets you adjust the hue/saturation of the little tokens you can put down, which I abused the HELL out of when I made battlemaps for Twilight Woods. Here's one of the random forest battle maps I made:

Now that said: Inkarnate sucks ass at making rooms. There's allegedly something in the works to address this... but currently you have to place every wall manually, and it sucks. That's actually where Dungeondraft comes in.

Dungeondraft is a little more cartoony, but it's great at building interiors and rooms. Unlike Inkarnate, it's not through the internet -- it's just a program you buy. But I've found decent use out of it. I built the entire map for the University of Temir in it (note: this is a snippet, the map is enormous)

And here's an example of the players' early bunkhouse, back when their town was underdeveloped! Both built using Dungeondraft.

VERY VERY RARELY I'll hand-draw a battlemap. Usually this is done because I've already tried to build the map in other tools and I wasn't happy with it, or I couldn't get it to look like the vision in my head. For example, I drew the map to Tephelt's lair by hand (snippet below: it's too big to post)

(Note: if it looks light, that's actually because I set up the lighting in Foundry. This is the equivalent of looking at a horror movie set with the lights on. Below is what it looks like in-game to my players, with Rahadin and Tephelt for size)

For the tokens -- most of the ones you guys see I draw by hand. It's a decent amount of work, but my players love it. Plus I think they're cute. They are available for free and anyone can use them, as long as you don't claim credit or anything. The PSDs are included as well, so if you want to edit one or dig around in there, you can! Now that said I'll be totally honest: I do not hand-draw every token for my players. I can't. I already put a lot of work into the campaign, and I can't feasibly draw every token when it comes to random encounters. For those, I use Token Stamp 2 to create a token from an image!

Honestly, given that Deadline article about how shows longer than 3 seasons aren’t usually profitable for Netflix unless they’re produced in-house, I think we need to be grateful that Netflix at least did a 5th season for Lucifer, especially given where s4 ended. I was concerned that wouldn’t happen, and I suspect the only reason it would is because it will take that much to recoup their investment in acquiring the rights, and because of that brutal cliffhanger. Beyond that, they just won’t make money off it unless it’s a mega-hit, and as much as many people love it, I don’t think it falls into that category. Of course, without their internal numbers, we have no way of knowing.

10 episodes per season is pretty typical for Netflix. Usually their shows are 10-13 episodes per season. ODaaT was 12 eps per, I think. Sense8 was...10? 12? 13 Reasons Why was 13, but mostly I think that was just because of the “13 tapes″ device of the first season.

I think the problem with the way SVODs and streaming services are run is, it’s all a numbers game on their end, while it’s an issue of emotional investment on ours. They pay out for these series up front in speculation that enough people will become emotionally involved to make them profitable but bringing in new subscribers/viewers, while preventing losses by attrition from old subscribers/viewers. When the numbers don’t add up on their end to equal profit, they cancel, but on our end, we’re not seeing the numbers, we’re just seeing something we’re emotionally involved with being taken away from us. There must be a better way to do it.

It seems like maybe if people paid per show, kinda like buying it on ITunes or Amazon or YouTube? I mean, for Veronica Mars, the studio said “yes, we’ll make a movie if you can crowd-fund this amount.” People ponied up, they made the movie. Done and done. There was no speculation of what would be a success or what wouldn’t involved.

Maybe we need a service that works like that, to crowd-fund the shows we enjoy. Like, say, you pay a small fee for an annual subscription to a service. That keeps the service able to pay upfront to add new content, say, a pilot episode or a small first season. Then you say “if you want more of this show, pledge $10” or you purchase each season for $2 per episode or $20 per season or whatever. If enough people pledge or purchase the show, it gets another season. If not, the pledge gets refunded or you authorize it to fund another show. Maybe it takes two years for the show to turn enough of a profit for it to get green-lit for another season, in which case, maybe it only gets a new season every two years. They don’t have to make the decision to cancel or renew based on speculation derived from one night or one week or one month of viewer figures.

Top Ten Games I’d Like to See on Game Pass in 2021

After a few weeks of earnest thinking and tyring to be creative, I’ve lapsed back into a wishlist this week. I used to do a lot more of these – films I’d like to come to Prime Video, games I’d like to see on Windows Phone, that sort of thing – so regular readers should be thankful that I’ve branched out more as time’s gone on.

In a way today’s list is another chance to review my big Christmas purchase, the Xbox Series X. Through a combination of presents and canny offers I was able to get, alongside the console, a year’s subscription to Game Pass Ultimate. Game Pass has been called Microsoft’s “real next-gen console”, in that they are very clearly positioning the future of their games business around it. And it is a very, very tantalising offer: dozens if not hundreds of games available at the touch of a button, playable on console, PC, and – via streaming – mobile phones. I had Game Pass once before, last year, and it was great; I chose not to keep up the sub because £11 a month (or even £8 for the most basic service) is still quite expensive when you’ve got large games that you own outright sitting there unplayed or uncompleted. But last time around the “xCloud” streaming service was still in closed beta, so it’s nice to see it rolled out more officially now. The interface is better and it seems to run a bit better, and games that support touch controls on a phone certainly perform better. I’ve found it a great way to play Slay the Spire, for instance; a turn-based card game is quite forgiving if you momentarily lose connection or the visuals start artifacting or something. Anyway, it’s great; the whole service is great. I love the fact that you get frequent (if very slight) rewards just for using it. It’s a great incentive to come back regularly or try new games. I wouldn’t have played something like The Medium or Ori and the Will of the Wisps without Game Pass; and allows me to play something like Planet Coaster or Crackdown 3, that I enjoy dipping in and out of, but probably wouldn’t buy at the moment. And for the kids, it’s great; Disneyland Adventure is a really fun game for the nippers. Although they mostly just play Minecraft.

But of course like Alexander Hamilton I’ve never been satisfied, and in that grand old tradition of doing wish lists, this week’s list is just the games that I’d like to see on the service. That’s it! Nothing complicated about it. just ten (or, well, kinda more actually) games that I think should be on Game Pass. Now, I’ve tried to be realistic about this; so I’ve not added games that aren’t actually out on the Xbox yet, such as Fall Guys (which I really hope will be on Game Pass). Ditto games that have just come out; you’ll see Assassin’s Creed down there somewhere, but not Valhalla, as that’s, I dunno, less likely right now? Same with Hitman 3; I really want to play that, it looks excellent, but I’m not expecting it to turn up on Game Pass anytime soon, coz it’s just come out and been a really big hit. There’s a slight exception to this rule though, as you’ll see.

So there we go: if anyone from Xbox is listening, here are the ten games I’d most like to see on Game Pass, if you please. Oh, and everything is meant to be on the Xbox unless otherwise stated.

Civilization VI (2019): and its assorted expansions please! Civ is my absolute must-play always-on go-to game on PC, and from what I’ve played of the console conversion, it’s a very good adaptation. Last year I was on the xCloud beta and Civ VI was one of the games you could stream; but oddly it’s never, to my knowledge, appeared on Game Pass proper. With Quick Resume, dipping in and out of a session would be even easier (and good god damn it takes a long time to load on my PC). Bonus: this works pretty well on mobile, although it can be hard to read the text on a phone screen.

Assassin’s Creed Origins and/or Odyssey (2017/2018): I’ve never really gotten into an Ass Creed game, so it’d be nice to experience one of the newer ones, but that’s not the real reason I want these on the service (besides, the one I really want to play is Valhalla, coz Vikings innit). Last year Ubisoft offered the “Discovery Tour” modes of both these games up for free on PC; my kids ate them up. They loved exploring ancient Egypt and Greece, and it tied into their studies at school. To free up my PC and because they’d look a lot nicer, I’d love them to be on the Xbox, too.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 (2020): I guess Skate or something is on Game Pass through EA Play, so I could scratch my board itch if I wanted, but it’s not quite the same. I want that nostalgia blast of Tony Hawk action. We used to play this on my girlfriend’s (now wife’s) computer, although I must confess I’ve utterly forgotten all the controls. Regardless, it’s a good fun party game and feels perfect for the service. This update in particular looks really worthwhile, with nice graphics but – hopefully – the same excellent gameplay. Dunno if Spider-Man is still in it, mind.

Minecraft (2011): now, yeah, I’m pretty sure Minecraft is actually on Game Pass on the Xbox; and, indeed, we own it. Whilst I feel that Minecraft is now so ubiquitous and has its own ecosystem that maybe it could become free-to-play, I definitely think that the PC version of Minecraft should fall under Game Pass for PC. Although I’m not sure that would really help my kids, as they’d need to be signed into my Game Pass account to play, wouldn’t they? See, MS needs some kind of family account thing going on.

Hades (2020): another PC games! Yeah, I quite fancy Hades. I remember playing the first Diablo, sometime very shortly after the actual fall of Satan, and liking it. Hades has got a lot of good reviews and all the nice people seem to be saying all the nice things about it. So I’d like to try it out, but I know, deep down inside, that I’ll just keep going back to playing Fallen Order and Gears 5 (or Civ on PC), so it’s not really worth buying. But if they added it to Game Pass on PC? Yes please.

Control Ultimate Edition (2021): ah, is this adding a brand new game? Depends on your definition. I really like the look of Control (2019). It looks like the sort of game I’d enjoy playing. And, yes, Control is technically on Game Pass. But with the super-shiny next-gen version imminent (with sexy ray-tracing!) then that’s the version I want to play. Not the filthy old degenerated version that can run on my old Xbox One. There’s a lot of justifiable controversy about the release structure of Control on next-gen, but given how pretty much all Xbox One games on Game Pass automatically give you their Series X/S versions through Smart Delivery, Control really stands out. As Ultimate Edition is on PlayStation Plus, I feel like a Game Pass version should come through sharpish.

Lego Marvel Super Heroes (2013): this is arguably the first of my “just being lazy” picks, and really it could stand in for a few different titles. We love the Lego games in this house, and our favourites (that is, mine and my kids’) probably remains Marvel Super Heroes and its 2017 sequel. Seeing as quite a lot of Xbox 360-era Lego games are on the service, it’d be really cool to add some of the newer ones, what with the excellent-sounding Skywalker Saga imminent. I mean, the first Marvel Super Heroes was an Xbox One launch title; they’re not exactly “new”. We own these, along with several more, but it’d be so nice to be able to hop in and out quickly without having to root around for a disc. And y’know, if they wanted to add the Lego Movie adaptations, or DC Super Villains, then why the heck not?

Cuphead (2017): I really want to play this! It looks amazing. I just want to experience that, y’know? Except here’s the problem: I know I would utterly suck at this. I’m pretty rubbish at platform games in general, and 2D shooters I’m even worse at. I’ve heard this game is quite hard. I am not good at hard games. And especially nowadays, when I only have time to breeze through stuff on super-easy (I have come to terms with playing games in “Story Mode”). So I just don’t think there’s any point in my buying it. But on Game Pass? Instant download.

Marvel’s Avengers (2020): is this “new”? I dunno anymore. Regardless, it feels like it’s had its moment, so coming to Game Pass wouldn’t be too outrageous. I’m gonna be honest, I’ve never felt like this looked particularly good, but then I hear people say how it’s a decent third-person action game where you play as Ms Marvel, and that sounds pretty cool. Maybe divorced of the hype and the unrealistic expectations there’s a fun no-frills game to be found. I’d love to discover it on Game Pass.

Star Wars: Squadrons (2020) or Cyberpunk 2077 (2020): now this is where we really get into lazy territory. I got both of these games for Christmas (and, obviously, they’re both new), and I really like them both (Cyberpunk runs really well on Series X). However, I got them both on disc; Cyberpunk specifically I wanted on disc to get the gubbins such as a map of Night City (I’m a sucker for stuff like that). And I think – yeah this sounds terrible – having to get up and get the box out and put the disc in is actually an impediment to my playing them. Sometimes I’m sat there and I think, shall I play Cyberpunk? And I realise I’d have to move, and I think, nah, I’ll just play Red Dead or Fallen Order or Witcher or Gears Tactics or Forza or Halo or Planet Coaster or Ori or Medium or Slay the Spire or Full Throttle or Crackdown or Two Point Hospital or Minecraft Dungeons or Perfect Dark or Doom or… you get the picture. I know I’m going to hell, don’t worry.

Rogue-likes and the Arcade Experience

The recent (say 5 years or so back) emergence of the “rogue-like” genre in games and the inevitable genre mashups that have followed (see Dead Cells or Risk of Rain) is actually just a re-imagining of the experience many of us had first with games: the arcade.

As a kid growing up in the 80′s and 90′s I was blessed to see the resurgence of the home console market and the hours of enjoyment the new console generation provided, but I also was able to experience the joy and economy of the arcade experience as well. Arcade games were still the main pipeline for new hit console games due to the technological advantages that still existed making a single purpose cabinet dedicated to playing one game. Hit games like Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, House of the Dead and the myriad of side scrolling brawlers in full 16-bit glory were ported with some differences to consoles to massive sales, while also still swallowing quarters in pizzerias and mall arcades everywhere. The internet had not become the free-flowing, lag free playground many of us enjoy now so if you wanted to play with a large group of people without having a million peripherals for your NES the arcade was still the go-to birthday party and social hangout place.

The experience of an arcade game was singularly different than the console experience. With consoles you purchase the hardware (at a significant loss to the producer usually) and then you also purchase the software (at a much more significant and long lasting profit to the producer) to use as you will, sometimes with subscription services offered. But with the arcade experience your enjoyment was limited to the amount of quarters you had and your skill at the game you were playing. Once you ran out of coin and continues the game reset from the beginning, maybe allowing you to save a high score if you were so lucky as to crack their leaderboard of 15 or so. This put a higher premium on pattern recognition and twitch reflexes since you could spend a couple of bucks beating a game if you were great at it, or $100 over time if you sucked and just kept playing (Dragon’s Lair was a game built to sucker people with bad reflexes into monstrous, wallet cratering amounts of play time). It wasn’t uncommon for me to walk by a Street Fighter cabinet to see an pre-pubescent kid sitting at the player 1 side and a line of would-be challengers behind player 2; the kid would be so in tune and twitch happy that he would be literally impossbile to defeat, but people kept trying.

Rogue as a game has very little to do with modern “rogue-like” games; it was a role playing experience that merely reset every time the player died, much like an arcade game but with no safety net like “continues” or quarters. Modern rogue-likes retain the “start from scratch” penalty of Rogue but with a twist that any gear unlocked or levels gained on the previous playthrough would accumulate for the next run, thus creating a continuity and reward system for continued play. With arcade games occasionally one would be awesome enough an experience to keep playing no matter the cost, or you were good enough to play it at low cost because you were able to perfect your technique, but generally after dropping a couple of bucks tops in most games you’d abandon in frustration or boredom. With rogue-like accumulation systems it makes it worthwhile to keep playing and powering through as each subsequent playthrough gets a little easier thanks to the contributions of the last run. Games like Rogue Legacy (which cleverly makes a new generation of hero when the last dies, literally creating inherited wealth) and Dead Cells keep the ability and buffs purchased with the blood of the last player allowing each playthrough to get deeper and deeper into the game. 

So what makes the rogue-like an arcade experience? For 20 years or so since consoles became a dominant force in gaming the goal with most games was to play it skillfully enough to progress through a story or number of levels, reaching the end and then moving onto another game (on few occasions a game would be excellent enough to repeat a playthrough or two but for the most part once you beat all the levels or reached the end of the story there was not much reason to play it again). The idea of perfecting technique and reaching the heights of scoring ability sort of fell away, with the competitive natured gamer drifting towards the emerging online fps scene to get their fix for competition. The rogue-like genre recaptures the competitive, even with one’s self, nature of gaming, and with evolved pixel style graphics often tickle several nostalgia zones in the early to late 30′s aged gamer. Now it’s not just a progression through a story (though the best of them find a way to add this) or a head-on competition with another gamer (always an iffy relationship), it can be a competition against yourself and the game. How far can I push this playthrough? OH SHIT I JUST KILLED THAT BOSS FOR THE FIRST TIME! ARGH so close to my record! These are all feelings that get missed as being important for many gamers; those of use with responsibilities outside gaming often cannot find enjoyment in the competitive FPS scene due to our inability to dedicate time wholly to the game without fear of more important things crowding in, nor can we always progress fast enough and block time to group in MMO’s to reach the highest levels of that particular genre, so games that reward perseverence but allow saving and progression beyond the normal ideals of the story are perfect for this segment of the gaming world. We simultaneously crave the experience of the arcade we had as children while also pining for the old days of story based console games, at the same time we are limited by our adult responsibilities. 

Two games currently I’ve been batting back and forth between while home are Diablo III’s hardcore adventure mode and the new early access Steam game Dead Cells. D3′s hardcore mode combined with adventure mode creates an almost perfect melding of traditional ARPG gameplay with an arcade style experience and fast combat I think is unique to the genre. Aside from the added tension of potentially killing a fully geared and gemmed toon in the blink of an eye (along with all the gear they carry and gems) the ability to play for short bursts of time in various styles gives a new depth to a game I’ve been playing for 5 years now. To me the only true goal I have left with D3 other than achievements is playing on T13 comfortably in hardcore mode, something that is still unattained after 5 years for me, though I’ve seen plenty doing it. Dead Cells is a new mashup of “Metroidvania” style with rogue-like permadeath and Dead Souls-like skill caps is a new experience for me. The tight controls and timing based maneuvering combined with old-school pattern-recognition skill and the perserverence of fighting through failure has been an addicting presence on my PC. I’ve only just passed the first boss this week for the first time, and randomly generated elite monsters are just as tough and likely to kill you mid-level as the boss will. Other recommendations I could give are Rogue Legacy, though that one seems more frustrating to me for some reason, Don’t Starve, which combines the tension of a survival game with the replayability of the rogue-like and has compelling visual qualities. There were several similar titles I played at PAX but none long enough to get super excited about. 

I’m encouraged to see the arcade-style play resurfacing in this new manner; many a weekend was well spent at the local mini-golf/arcade/pizzeria that operated in my hometown, figuring out how much I could spend on each thing that would leave the most money to play games with and spending more than half a day just enjoying life. The games themselves indelible in my memory: Magician Lord, Aliens, Virtual On, Tekken, Time Crisis, House of the Dead and on and on. Experiences unique to the game cabinet not truly replicable on the home console. As soon as the console started equalizing in technology to the arcades the lines blurred and soon there was no reason to go to arcades anymore and press against the other sweaty virgins waiting to get their asses kicked by teenage Korean kids, but I missed finding those gems hidden around the arcade without crowds that offered weird and unique gaming experiences. Now the feel of that is being resurrected by the rogue-like features pulled from a 40 year old CRPG and to me that’s the enduring testament to the desire most gamers have to keep their beloved experiences alive.
