Strange Bedfellows (2025)
Oberon is finding his way back after a very public “breakdown,” but when he develops the ability to conjure his dreams in real life—including a facsimile of his high school crush, Kon—he might have more on his plate than he originally thought.
Strange Bedfellows is my new sci-fi romance graphic novel from Harper Collins, coming to you in 2025. This is why I've been on hiatus from Witchy for the past couple of years! The pages above were made for my pitch to publishers, and don't reflect the final product, but I still think they're a neat introduction to the story and world. I'm gonna try my best to post about it more on here. <---guy who got a couple of tagged reblogs on their previous post and has awakened the dopamine machine

I’m back with more Funnybunny. I’m not sure how well I did with this one, since it kinda just… emerged. Like my last one. It discusses some heavy stuff, but there’s a big fat gross kiss at the end to compensate. Also, Kinger and Zooble cameo at the beginning.

The Stage was empty in the morning. Caine was nowhere to be found. It would be eerily quiet in the tent were it not for Kinger’s mumbling. The oldest performer at the circus paced in a circle around the stage
Kinger: *nervous sing-song* Caine’s not here, Caine’s not here, Caine’s not here…~ We’re gonna miss doing the introooo, Caine’s not here…
*Zooble and Pomni enter from backstage. Zooble rolls their eyes*
Zooble: Ugh, I knew it. KINGER!
*Kinger yelps, flailing his hands around before relaxing a tiny bit*
Kinger: Zooble! New girl! I forgot you were there!
Pomni: Uh, we weren’t-
*Kinger hurries over to them, panting almost comically loud*
Kinger: Caine’s not here! I looked everywhere! *counting on his fingers* The tent, outside, the tent, my room, the basement, the tent- *he grabbed his head* But he’s nowhere! We’re gonna miss the intro and I don’t wanna break the ruuuules!
Zooble: *putting a claw to their forehead* %€$&$ €#£!$#, Kinger, it’s update day. Caine isn’t here because he’s getting a software update. He told us yesterday. And the day before that.
*Kinger suddenly stands up a lot straighter*
Kinger: Oh. So… no adventure today?
Pomni: R-Right. No adventure today.
Zooble: And you’re out here keeping me awake. Come on, Peepaw, let’s get you to bed.
*Zooble takes Kinger’s hand and walks him back towards the bedrooms*
Kinger: My name is Kinger, actually.
*The three of them head back into the hallway. Zooble pauses to look at Pomni*
Zooble: Hey, Pomni. Word of advice. Try and enjoy the quiet moments. They don’t happen all that often.
Kinger: And remember! If you’re quiet and you stay still, they won’t notice you as quickly!
Pomni: Uh… thanks guys. Enjoy your day off.
Pomni waved goodbye and sighed a bit. It wasn’t like she wanted to hang out with “the gang,” but… it beat being alone with her thoughts. She wasn’t quite sure where everyone had gone… unless literally EVERY OTHER PERSON was asleep. Which… was possible, admittedly. She chewed her lip a bit before going back to her room.
Pomni: Enjoy the quiet… *she sighs*
Being alone with her thoughts and no distractions, no way that could go wrong. Sure enough, not long after she shut the door, a creeping misery drooled into her belly. She was never getting out of here… no ifs, ands, or buts. If she didn’t go crazy and turn into one of those abstract creatures, she’d end up a paranoid wreck like Kinger, and everyone else would go crazy. There was no winning. Game over. You lose. Do not pass Go, do not collect $200.
Pomni: I don’t care. *she lies out loud to herself.*
She flopped lifelessly onto her bed, staring at the wall. Maybe if she closed her eyes, she could convince her overcharged brain that it needed some rest. The dark only made her more aware of how much it hurt inside. God did it ever hurt… It wasn’t like a cut where the pain went away after a while. It was like a burn, it just kept on flaring up with new pain long after the initial damage. There was no point to anything… she was a jester forever, a fool for people to laugh at. Not even people… for FAKE people to laugh at. Less than zero.
Pomni: Someone shoot me…
Jax: I got a squirt gun.
Pomni’s eyes flew open, finding her face just a few inches from Jax’s, who rested on the other side of the bed with a big, smarmy grin on his face.
Pomni: JAX-! *she jolts back, scrabbling on the bedsheets for something to grab but ultimately falling off the bed onto her butt*
Jax: Hey Pompom. Comfy bed you got here.
Pomni rose to her feet, hands curled into fists.
Pomni: What the #%!! are you-
Jax: Doing in your room? You left the door unlocked when you went out with Zooble. You gotta get better about that if you want privacy.
Pomni: Jax. I don’t… *tries to start talking, and stops* Can you… Can I… I just want to be alone okay?
Jax: So you can do… what?
Pomni: Sleep.
Jax: You weren’t sleeping.
Pomni: I was trying to.
Jax: Sounded more like you were feelin’ sorry for yourself.
Pomni: Sometimes I can do both, okay? Now get off my bed.
Jax gave an exaggerated stretch before snuggling deeper into Pomni’s pillow. The jester quaked with frustration before turning and stomping to her door. If Jax wanted to be an ass, she’d just go find somewhere else to mope.
Jax: So why do you want to get shot?
Pomni stopped in her tracks.
Pomni: Why do you think?
Jax: Why do I think? Could be for any reason. Maybe you read some of Gangle’s fanfiction. One chapter of that would have me reaching for the Clorox.
Pomni: *fake, derisive laughter* Ha ha ha, you’re sooo funny.
Jax: I’m just sayin’, Pompom, you-
Pomni: Don’t. Call me. POMPOM!
The ensuing silence was palpable. Pomni gave a small gasp and covered her mouth with one hand. She couldn’t remember the last time she had shouted at somebody like that. Sure, she had told off Jax before, but that shout came from somewhere dark and primal…
Jax: Yowza.
Pomni: …I… I didn’t mean to shout like that. I’m sorry… Are you okay?
Jax: *looks back and forth* Yeah? Are you?
Pomni: No.
Jax: Dumb question. Anyway, I’ve razzed you enough. I’ll let you be alone.
Jax hops down off the bed, tucking his hands behind his head and walking towards the door. A hand grabbed him by the back pocket of his overalls.
Jax: Uh-
Pomni: …I’m sorry. *she looks down at the floor*
Jax: It’s… fine?
Pomni: …Jax, I don’t want you to leave. I’m sorry.
Jax: You already said you’re sorry. Can you let go of my pants?
Pomni: I’m sorry, I didn’t… *she lets go* I’m sorry…
Jax: Pomni. What are you sorry for?
Pomni: I… I yelled at you, I-
Jax: I get yelled at all the time. It’s sorta my thing. *awkward smirk*
Pomni: Don’t go… I’m sorry.
Jax: Okay. Come on. You need to calm down.
Without warning, Jax puts his hands under Pomni’s armpits and hoists her up off her feet.
Pomni: Wh- HEY! Jax, what are you-?!
Jax: You’re in one of those… loops. I know how it works. Also, WOW, you weigh like six pounds.
He plopped her onto her bed. Pomni barely had time to register what just happened before Jax sat beside her.
Jax: Look, Pompom… Sorry. Pomni. It’s okay to be sad. It’s okay to be depressed. It’s okay to yell sometimes. But…
He sighed and thought a minute. A faint blush lit up his face.
Jax: You don’t… need to do all that by yourself. I don’t want you to hurt all alone.
Pomni: …Is that why you snuck here? You were worried about me?
The pink on Jax’s cheeks grew more pronounced as he crossed his arms.
Jax: Y-Yeah, whatever you want to believe.
Pomni took his hand, a tiny, grateful smile across her face. Jax tried his best to look uninterested, but it wasn’t a very convincing look. Pomni held his other hand and there was an electric silence as they looked at each other.
Pomni: I… don’t…
The invisible barrier fell down and their lips met. It was a kiss of both inexperience and pent-up emotion. Both the jester and the rabbit felt all their reservations melt away as they kissed each other. It didn’t matter if someone found out. It didn’t matter if one of them was going to die later… they wanted this. They NEEDED this.
Jax fell onto his back as Pomni climbed on top of him. There was a moment of hesitation before they began to kiss again. Tender but eager. Pomni let out a fluttery sigh from the very back of her throat as she felt Jax’s hand on the back of her head. Gentle, wordless encouragement…
At some point, the kiss broke and they laid apart from each other on opposite sides of the bed, flushed and panting.
Pomni: …Are you okay?
Jax: Y-Yeah. Better than okay.
Pomni: I think I am too. I’m… I…
Pomni blinked in surprise.
Pomni: …I’m tired.
Jax: That’s okay.
Pomni: …Will you stay with me?
Jax: Yeah. Course. Definitely.
Pomni could tell he was still processing what just happened. But it was okay. Maybe it wouldn’t be okay later… but for now it was okay. She rolled over and laid her head on his chest, holding his hand. She felt him squeeze it.
Moments later she fell asleep.

i have so many thoughts on ira.
this creature who was at first framed as almost comically evil and yet even in his first encounter felt off in that perception. the way he had no reason to spare the bells until he realized fearne was a calloway and both gave up a contract we learned he desperately needed for coin (& presumably espionage) & pulled back on his survival instincts to let her live.
the way he erased part of the calloway's minds, saw fit to leave them on a whim when the unseelie were close, steals the moontide crown from them. yet he helped them build a garden using his prized gnarlrock supply, explicitly telling them it would harm them, rather than letting them be test subjects. him teaching oleander all he could. coexisting with them for years. clearly caring for them in some warped way.
the way he & morri feel about each other, him degrading himself knowing she could do better. her both calling him an ass but softly asking if he ever spoke of her, asking to see him again, repeatedly implying & saying she trusted his judgement.
the way he worked for otohan & ludinus, helped them build their anchors to ruidis, his devices & design integral to kickstarting a new calamity. yet he was fired by them, or left them in vast frustration. the way he still feels that anger, snarling at them & their "beaurecratic bullshit", using his leyline-peering telescope just to spy on them, celebrating their failures. the way he runs to the desert to enact his own plans, aware how close they are.
the way the bells feel so confident he's a villain, thought he was the main villain, at first, ignoring even otohan & ludinus. the way they lied even to morri that he broke her work. but how nearly every npc is insistent they talk with him, find strange bedfellows with him. say he is part of their weave & fate & success. that they cannot push any alliance, but he is a part of this web nonetheless.
ira.... you are so fucking fascinating. you're so much more than what anyone thinks, aren't you?

Summary: Everett Ross slowly adapts to life in Wakanda. But he's still missing a few pieces, especially when it comes to how the King of Talokan fits in to everything else.
Why I Love It: A character study – in which a character studies other characters. Seriously, this is so fascinating. Now, Everett Ross’s POV can be considered of no consequence in most cases, but in this case, it represents not only the perspective of anyone outside of the dynamic between Namor and Shuri, but that of an outsider, wholesale. Which, as we quite literally are an audience looking into a fictional world, attempting to rationalize or breakdown the chemistry between our favorite characters, this POV kind of makes the most sense. But also, since this is a white man, indebted to a nation his own country wishes to destabilize and fell, it offers a few more quite different arguments to consider.
The author gives us some window into Ross’s state of mind, but leaves just enough in the shadows that I seriously wonder what his actual concern is. The angle he approaches with is concerned ally to Wakanda and friend to Shuri. His distrust and fear of Namor is certainly warranted, and even comical at times.
The way Namor is written here is pitch perfect. Shuri herself, through her interactions with Ross and his observation of her interactions with Namor, is clearly the same Shuri from the film, continuing to deal with her anger and grief. And like us all at some point as we pondered the nature of Shuri and Namor’s palpable chemistry, as we saw the possibilities of the relationship that could blossom between them, Ross asks himself over and over again: what exactly is going on here? And does he really want to know the answer?
The author also has a series of one shots studying Namor’s burgeoning regard for Shuri that I find fascinating and well crafted. Follow their Tumblr here for updates.

new to stucky
Hi, hello, yes, i am new to stucky. This is in response to this post by @hellyeahbottombucky -- so, uh, yes, shameless self-recs coming at you. 💕
a handful of dust -- my first stucky fic. Canon divergence after CATWS.
SUMMARY: Steve looks for Bucky for a long time.
But the thing is that Bucky doesn't get found, Bucky finds. Bucky always finds Steve.
This takes a hard left after the Potomac and stumbles through the dark a lot after. Take a bit of running, the occasional synaptic misfire, the resurfacing of old memories, a dash or two of PTSD, and (eventually) a nice dose of action, stir, and serve over some unresolved issues. HEA included, of course.

Truth Or Consequences, New Mexico -- my entry for the CAPRBB22, my first bang of any kind. Which was the most amazing experience EVER, thanks to @angelicalslayer and the incredible mods.
SUMMARY: Twelve years after the end of the American Civil War, Marshal Steven Grant Rogers is tasked with finding an assassin who calls himself the Winter Soldier.
There are gun fights, fist fights, corruption, intrigue, past trauma, present pain, dumb luck, smart horses, and the difference between right and just, served with a dose of fluff and the kind of Happy Ending where people literally ride into the sunset.

SUMMARY: In an alternate future far from canon, HYDRA's Brave New World is just anarchy with different rules.
Civilization had a bit of a breakdown in the face of the New World Order, but greed still rules all, and far from the madding crowd Bucky tries to work off his debts in a cage fight octagon. Until one day one of the new fighters to get dropped turns out to be a 95-pound bag of bones and attitude and Bucky's world never recovers from the impact.
Not that he wants it to.
This is basically a buffet of connection, courage, bruised knuckles, comic relief, bad guys, badder guys, worse ideas, and best laid plans. Not to mention idiots falling in love and being idiots about it.
Protective idiots. Lovable, wonderful, idiotic idiots.

No matter how much awesome analysis I read from you (and peaterookie) [and tsukumo-nya!], I can't change knowing how neglected the original manga is sometimes but I have too many mixed feelings about Monkey Punch that I wouldn't recommend the manga to anyone. A little detail I can't help but notice is how Anime Goemon's Zantetsuken has a bigger entry than Manga Goemon himself on the Lupin Fandom wiki and Japanese Wikipedia page and that is hilarious. Being a fan of Manga Goemon is a curse :(

i get how you feel yeah... my only hope is that at least someday we'll get some animated adaptation of goemon from the manga, but i think the folks at tms are a little afraid that he doesn't resemble at all the anime version most people associate the name with. i kind of like anime goemon but it really seems like the writers don't know what to do with him most of the time, and i think having a concrete basis for who the character is would help very much.
i understand how you feel about the manga though. many parts of the original made me feel uncomfortable, and even if monkey punch did grow as a person over time and stopped justifying lupin's actions, it was still a prominent part of the manga. i feel like he was even making readers feel this way on purpose sometimes, like in chapter 31 "Strange Bedfellows"/"Goemon's Close Call" of shin where it's so prolonged that you really worry about goemon.
if you wanna recommend something of the manga, honestly new adventures is great cause it's pretty tame. only bad thing i can really think of was that scene where for some reason (monkey punch logic) lupin and crew have to have sex with rasputin's 3 wives in order to break their hypnosis, but they end up failing anyways. i kind of wish new adventures was separated from the original manga on mangadex to make it easier to just recommend those chapters but it's whatever.
i like doing these posts because it's my way of documenting the things i think of the manga and even some of the research i've had to do, but it's not exactly great to have to scroll through all these posts so idk lol. at least it's providing more information than the fandom wiki and japanese wiki have so that's something.
also if it makes you feel any better about liking manga goemon, you should look up 原ゴエ ("genngoe") on sites like pixiv and twitter.
it's a term that combines "gennsaku" (meaning original work) and "goemon" that people use. there's so much good art and even stuff like fan comics and writing to dig through that it puts a smile on my face. some of my favorite art is from mochiko/もちこ (https://www.pixiv.net/en/users/9208) and みやの (https://www.pixiv.net/en/users/5582408), but there's a bunch of other cool artists too.

Witchy, Volume 2 by Ariel Slamet Ries
The eagerly awaited second collected volume of Ariel Slamet Ries’ hit online comic Witchy.
In the witch kingdom Hyalin, the strength of your magic is determined by the length of your hair. Low on magic and on the run after committing the ultimate heresy of cutting one’s hair, Nyneve and her raven companion, Banana, head into an ancient forest in search of safe transport. However, when Nyneve butts heads with the gruff and overbearing broom-maker Kaveh, she starts to wonder if she wouldn’t be better off in the hands of the Witch Guard.
Review: I went into Witchy, Volume 2 with pretty high expectations. I loved Witchy, Volume 1 (review here) and I was looking forward to a follow-up that would continue the incredible story I was introduced to. And if you're not familiar, here's how I summed up Witchy when I read Volume 1:
"Witchy follows one Nyneve, who has grown up beneath the shadow her father’s death at the hands of the Witch Guard — one that she might be conscripted to join. In the kingdom of Hyalin, your magic ability is measured by the length of your hair. The longer your hair, the stronger you are. But if you’re too powerful, the Witch Guard considers you a threat. Nyneve must grapple with her past and how to survive in Hyalin."
Volume 1 had queer Asian witches, a talking bird, and incredibly layered fantasy worldbuilding -- so of course, I loved it. (And if you haven't read it, you should really read it before diving into the second volume!) Volume 2 delivers on the promise of the first volume, sending Nyneve on a journey into the forest to meet broom-maker Kaveh. It's very much an inward looking story that focuses on growth, with a less intense and exciting pace than the first book.
While this slower story may not be your cup of tea (it was mine, but of course that doesn't apply to everyone), there is a lot to love about the second collected volume of Witchy -- Banana, the many queer characters, and the gorgeous art. It is just as stunning, rich, and fun to look at as ever. I'm a particular fan of the settings and the clothing throughout the story.
What really makes me happy about reading graphic novels in 2022 is just how many of them are queer, fantastical, and just a delight. It's a really good time to get into reading comics, particularly if you're looking for more queer and BIPOC representation. The Witchy series is a great series to start with, and I highly recommend checking out Volume 1, and moving onto Volume 2 if you enjoyed the first.
From what I can tell, the Witchy webcomic is ongoing, so I look forward to potentially reading a Volume 3 eventually. What I'm really, really looking forward to is creator Ariel Slamet Ries's next graphic novel project: Strange Bedfellows. No idea when that's coming out, but I'll be keeping an eye out.
Recommendation: Get it soon!

Better than part one.
There are two doppelgängers!?
It turns out that the evil double that we met last time isn't quite what he appeared to be. (The scamp!) This issue offers a long-winded, wordy explanation as to what is really going on. In fairness, it's pretty decent. A lower word count would have made this comic into a pacier, better read. But, as we all know, RT prefers, if at all possible, to use seven words where one would do.
