The New Teen Titans #46
Better than part one.
Vicki Chase has Chris King captive in San Francisco.
The focus on the Titans licking their wounds is great. They were trashed last issue, and they're in bad shape. Not fit for battle. Except for Danny Chase they're a terrific bunch of characters. Very likeable.
The stuff with the Dial is still very silly. And Vicki's backstory is under explained. It's not clear who/what this sinister group really is. But the tone is adult/mature and the battle with Kory is intense.

Dial 'D' for Danger
Tumblr media
The New Teen Titans #45
Average.
Vicki Grant wants to kill Chris King. And she has powers. Lots of powers.
There's a really silly device driving the story here. It feels like something from a children's comic, where ordinary teenagers can "dial up" superpowers. Somehow.
In this story, two former heroes are battling. It's a lover's quarrel. (Or so it seems...) The Titans try to help but Vicki easily defeats them.
Danny Chase is obnoxious and I detest the character more with every issue. But both Cyborg and Raven have great scenes here. So I guess it balances out. Somehow.

Doom in the Heartland!
Tumblr media
Superman #20
Slow start, but gets very good...
Superman joins Doom Patrol in their battle with Metallo.
The first 7 pages are quite dull. The book's supporting characters aren't particularly interesting. Not one of them stands out. But as soon as we switch to the Doom Patrol, things go up a few notches. And Metallo makes for a credible opponent.

Doom Patrol #10
Very enjoyable indeed.
Metallo comes a callin'.
Lots to love here. First, the characters are strong and interesting. Even Superman is better here than in his own titles. His apparent cockiness revealed to be a mask for his worries. Some of this in his own books would make him much more likeable. Second, the villain actually taking control of Cliff's body is cool. Finally, an unexpected visit by one of the regulars to Belle Reve prison in Louisiana.

Moral Stand

Wild Dog [Action Comics #601-609]
Enjoyable.
Anti-smut group starts bombing bookstores.
72 pages of plot-driven violent action. As with the 4-issue mini series, it's a lot like THE PUNISHER and it's also very different. The lead character is working closely with one friend, and another pal gets sucked in as the story unfolds. Their various conversations are very entertaining. As well as all the killings, there's a sly humour to it. The last panel is very good.

The Wanderers #3
Best issue so far.
“These hatchlings which seem to be taking over the minds of the natives.”
With the status quo established, we get the first plot-driven issue. A high concept sci-fi adventure. Exciting. And the characters shine. Nicely ominous b-story with Psyche. Best part of the book. I'm hooked.

Day of the Godslayer!
Tumblr media
The Avengers #166
Wow!
"Why... that's Count Nefaria down there - and somehow he's become a super-powerhouse!"
This has to be one of the best all-battle issues I've read. The villain is powerful enough to fight Thor to a standstill. And the Vision when he joins the battle. There are some lovely storytelling touches, like the stuff with Doctor Sturdy, and a lovely moment when an injured Steve gives his shield to Simon to carry into battle. Deft foreshadowing of upcoming storylines, too.

The Avengers #165
Action!
Count Nefaria.
It's basically another villain-attacks-hero-HQ story, without much reason to do so, but it's an exciting read nonetheless. Nefaria is very powerful here, and the good guys are well written. There are nice character moments for Simon, Tony, and Steve.
First appearance of Henry Peter Gyrich.

To Fall by Treachery!

The Avengers #164
Solid.
Erik Josten, the Living Laser, Count Nefaria.
Josten is still annoyed about Luke Cage stealing his super-villain name, Parks is still vicious, and Nefaria is skint. He's got big plans, it seems, but no cash to make them happen. A nice bit of storytelling.
Over with the heroes, the Beast gets some decent character moments, we learn a bit about Wonder Man, and the rest is action when the villains attack the mansion.

No Final Victory!
Tumblr media
The Avengers Annual #6
A packed 27 pages.
The Living Laser and... Nuklo!
Plenty of action. Arthur Parks' motivations make sense. He's done his research, he now has the Serpent Crown, and he wants power. It's a tad convenient that he goes after Nuklo just when the mutant's father has randomly decided to hang out with the Avengers. And it's a bit vague how Parks' laser powers are able to accomplish some of the things he does in this two-parter. But it's cool to see Wonder Man come to his senses and battle alongside the Avengers, and the art is gorgeous.

Home is the Hero!
Tumblr media
The Avengers #153
Chaotic but exciting.
The Living Laser gets his hands on the Serpent Crown. (That can't be good.)
This one's a bit all over the place, but it hangs together pretty well. We've got plenty of action in different locations, but the key scenes involve Arthur Parks battling Scarlet Witch for possession of the ancient power object. He also - we learn in flashback - causes the Whizzer to attack the Avengers to "confuse" them. Bob Frank makes mincemeat of the team, which is fun to see.

The Killer With My Name!
Tumblr media
Power Man #21
Man, this is fun!
Erik Josten shows up, angry that Luke is using the Power Man name.
It's a very flimsy premise/motivation but it sure works as a story. The villain is bland but the action is good. The real strength here is Luke. His personality is a blast. Claire Temple has written him a goodbye letter, he's in bad mood and he isn't taking any crap from this guy. Especially when a little girl gets caught in the crossfire.

The Adventures of Superman #442
Below average.
Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, and others join the battle.
It all gets a bit silly here. Other heroes have their powers stolen. And there are dreary scenes with Lois Lane and Jose Delgado. Then Clark Kent shows up at the battle and fights the alien to a standstill. Giving a wordy explanation after he's won. It all feels a bit quaint; dated. Sometimes these SUPERMAN scripts feel like an in-joke for those who read the series in the 60s. Meanwhile, the rest of us scratch our heads at how daft it all is.

The Power that Failed
Tumblr media
Superman #19
Above average.
Supes is losing his powers, one by one.
It feels like this happens a lot. But the way it's done here is intriguing. There are also some nods to ongoing plots: Lois being annoyed with Clark, Supergirl returning(!?), etc.

To Heavens of Everything
Tumblr media
The Wanderers #2
Not quite as strong as issue one.
A death/rebirth and the team visit their first planet.
As with the opening chapter, we've a lot of time devoted to setting up the status quo. It's clunky but it gets the job done. And there's a mini-adventure jammed into the final pages. Some characters, like Psyche, Quantum Queen, and Dartalon, really stand out. That helps.

From Grave to Nothing...
Tumblr media
The Wanderers #1
Interesting.
Some dead heroes are cloned for a dangerous mission.
Big ideas here. It's high concept fun. And some of the characters pop right away. It's all gets a bit textbook towards the end. A lot of "this is character X and this is what they can do" stuff. But it's a strong start.

When Goliaths Clash!!!!
Tumblr media
West Coast Avengers II #92
Average.
Clint Barton vs. Erik Josten
Very standard villain-attacks-hero-HQ story. His motivation? Revenge. And someone is using his name. That's it. Lightweight stuff.
There are character-driven moments for the regulars. Nothing particularly fresh or startling in any of it.
The fight is okay. Clint is struggling, so there's some tension.
An enjoyable-but-forgettable issue. Mileage may vary but if you like Clint and Bobbi - and I do - this is probably one for you.
