Abel Charles mclean was the smallest but smartest babies I've ever fallen in love with he wrapped me around his little finger from the moment he was born.. in that moment I knew when I looked into his eyes that he had me so wrapped around his little finger and he knew it too.. sadly he passed away due too SIDS 2 weeks after I gave birth to him and the day I lost him was the day I died... giving life to such an amazing little boy and then having him be taken like that at only just 2 weeks old.. I'm doing this all for him, Abel changed my life and continues to keep changing it. So my please go check it out and help me navigate and distract myself from this pain.. and he would of been 3 months old today and am I allowed to feel guilty that I'm trying to distract myself?

50 Years of Island Books: Laurie Raisys

Laurie and Victor Raisys bought Island Books in July 2015 and became the fourth owners since the store opened in 1973. They are both accomplished Microsoft alumni, but don't let that fool you into thinking they've had an easy road. Underneath that busy exterior are community builders and devoted parents of four. For our final 50 Years of Island Books installment, I sat down with Laurie in the back of the store. Here’s our conversation:

Miriam: Let's start with your favorite book category.

Laurie: I’m a total fiction person. Not historical, but thrillers, current fiction and romance. I love messy, dysfunctional families — I am a Lisa Jewell person all the way.

Miriam: Ha! OK. Tell me about your proudest accomplishment. Laurie: Making it through COVID. It was so incredibly hard and I felt the pressure as an owner with employees, responsible for their livelihood. I remember seeing all these bookstores closing, watching it happen on social media and talking with Victor about being so sad and scared about what would happen. Nobody knew what was going to happen. And then Victor wrote that [Laurie points at a sign on the wall in the back room] and stopped by the bookstore and gave it to me. It says “Believe, make it happen. We will make it.” And we did.

Miriam: That sign is from during COVID. Laurie: That's from during COVID. Miriam: And you drove books around to individuals all over the island. To me, that was incredible.

Laurie: Sofija [Laurie’s oldest daughter] and I did a lot of that. Victor and Erik [Laurie’s son] did some too. Everybody helped. By the end, we knew the island like the back of our hand. Miriam: It was awesome. Tell me about what it was like when you started running the bookstore. I remember when you took over in the back. Laurie: When I bought the bookstore eight and half years ago, I didn’t know anything about books other than how to read them. And Garry [the longtime receiver] was leaving. I said, “Hey, receiving the books is a perfect entry point for me.” And what a great thing to learn, because you see everything coming in. I’m forever grateful that I got to do that. Of course, I made mistakes, and Garry was so incredibly patient. He was the best teacher. And then, when the store became mine, I still handled receiving for a long time. Just the other day I thought, I can’t believe what I know now versus what I knew then. I never knew that books come out on the Tuesday or that we have a lot of hardcovers because libraries demand them. And I’ve learned so much from the publisher’s reps who moved from Roger to me. We’ve all taken on new responsibilities and learned a lot. It’s been an enormous education.

Miriam: Tell me how you all work together. Laurie: As a team, we are solid. I appreciate the fact that the longer a staff member has worked here, the more they know how to do a lot of things. When we don’t know, we ask others. It’s a team effort and that synergy feels like a huge accomplishment.

Miriam: It is. That’s how a small business keeps running. You support each other. How would you say your staff would describe you?

Laurie: Grumpy? Miriam: Can I put that in, because it's funny?

Laurie: [Laughs and nods] Grumpy, kind, and generous. It can be a challenge, as a private business, to do a lot of the things we do for the team, but I do it because they all work really hard. I don’t waste a lot of time when I’m here because, for a long time, I spent sixty hours a week working in the store. When I needed to step back and ensure I had a little more home-life balance, that’s where the trust came in, giving people more responsibility. When I’m here I just get stuff done, although I love talking to the customers. And I do really appreciate my staff.

Miriam: You’re never sitting! I would say many of your efforts are invisible to the outside world. You work with other small businesses, put on author events, book clubs, school fundraisers, and story times and it only happens because you do so much outreach. Organizing and planning takes so much time. Did that surprise you?

Laurie:  There are a lot of people that reach out to you. You can’t say yes to everyone. And it’s not because you don’t want to, but it’s a lot of effort to set up for an event. And when you do it and the turnout is low, it’s disheartening for everyone involved. Now we are very thoughtful about our events. In October we have a great lineup. It’s a month of really interesting and diverse books.

Miriam: I was going to say you do an excellent job of curating toward local interest.

Laurie: I mean, for us, when we do an event, we can only promote to the people who follow us at Island Books. So authors need to let the people who follow them know, “Hey, I'm going to be in this place. Come see me.” And then more people know where to see that author because they may not follow our store. The major Seattle indie bookstores have an easier time getting people to attend their event. But we’re in an off-the-beaten-path location, even with the draw of parking. 

And not all of our community involvement happens in the store. We sponsor the farmers market. I’ve given support to the high school band for years, and I always place an ad in the high school newspaper during graduation season to say congratulations. I’m the chamber board’s current interim president.

Miriam: You've hosted weddings.

Laurie: That was so exciting. We just had our second senior take pictures here. She is a local swimmer, and I supported the high school swim team this year. It's just a great community. They have supported us for fifty years, and in my eight years, especially during COVID, they kept us alive. We would not have survived without them. It’s not just the people on this island. People who grew up here and moved away read the Slate story or heard from their parents that we were struggling. They called in and ordered not only tons of books but gift cards. People talk about their community bookstore being their third place, and I’m proud that Island Books is at the top of the list in terms of representing what a community bookstore means. It’s a very reciprocal relationship. Miriam: Island Books is a hub on Mercer Island. You get a unique look at the community. Laurie: My husband grew up here, and all my kids have been raised here. When you’re that involved in the schools and raising kids here, you see how the community works.

Miriam: That’s so true. What does 50 Years of Island Books mean to you?

Laurie: I just think it's incredible that it's 50 years. It's 50 years in one place. And not without challenges. But to be in one physical space for 50 years is incredible. It's amazing to me. There are customers who still shop here that can say, I was here on the first day. Lola Deane, who opened the store, is still here. We’re so lucky. People are funny. They'll come in sometimes and ask, “Is this an independent bookstore? There's so few left.” Which always surprises me, because we have around 28 independent bookstores in the greater Seattle area. We are so fortunate as an entire Pacific Northwest community because there are many independent bookstores. It's ridiculous. We're rich beyond rich. Miriam: And we have fascinating individuals who own and run them. Laurie: The owners are the coolest people with a unique perspective. It's so vibrant and a great community, too. Hey, did you see we just had the first Asian bookstore open? [mam’s books]

Miriam: It’s so wonderful. Laurie: I love to welcome new community into our bookstore universe. I was fortunate to inherit a store that already existed. I don't know how I would feel if it was brand new and I had to do it myself. The fact that the store was already running lowered my learning curve. Our network is how indie bookstores will survive: if we have a community and we have each other.

Miriam: Helping each other is essential. Is there anything else you'd like to say to finish up?

Laurie: We're excited to celebrate our Golden Jubilee and hope the community comes to the store! We're going to have little things happening all day on November 4th. The typewriters will be out. We'll have story time in the morning. There will be a blind wrapping contest. We’ll have cookies and cool stickers that say, “I've been booking it at Island Book since…” so people can write down how many years they've been here. We’ll give away gift cards every hour or so. And then we'll have cake and champagne at five o'clock and say thank you.

I’m feeling grateful.

For what I have & what is coming to me. I feel as if I’m about to birth a spiritual growth for myself, businesse(s), and later than sooner my womb. I’m feeling myself change this cleanse I’m about to start will be worth it. God has done so much for in me in my lifetime and I haven’t even hit the hardest part. My childhood best friend passed last Friday at the age of 26. He has 4 kids & a wife. Life is so much more. I’m keeping God with me in everything I do. So, When we ask how to get rich, the solution we constantly hear is to construct your own business. But how do you start a business? Did you know that constructing your own business isn't always easy? There are many things we should consider before we begin. Doing business is a serious matter and not a joke. You must be prepared for the good and bad things that can happen when you set up your own business.

Here are few Advantages and Disadvantages to constructing your own conventional business.

Advantages of getting your own conventional business.

1) You can improve in life 👍

This is the beauty when we have our own business, it can be the reason for us to get rich or improve in life. You can provide all your family needs, you can go to the places you want to go and you can buy everything you want to buy. In other words, you will finally realize your dreams.

2) You are the "boss" of your very own business 🧒

If you are tired of the day by day grind and repeated traffic jams when you go to work and see your rude boss, just build your own businesse! Because if you have your own business, you are the "boss" of your own company. There is no rude boss who will tell you what to do, when to eat and when to go home.

3) You can help others 👼

It is also one of the beauties of having your own business, as you earn money you also help others in need. Doesn't it feel good to be able to help others? It also means that you are uplifting in life. In return for the blessings we receive from God, we should return it to him by helping the needy or sharing our knowledge with others.

4) You can help in the promotion of the people☺️

One of the great delights in doing business is your contribution to the advancement of your community. Because of your business, you can create a job for your fellow man, you can create a product that is available and useful to the people or you solve the problem of people who need a solution because of the service you offer. Your business has value or significance because you are one of the reasons for the country's economic growth. 🤗

Disadvantages of building your own business

1) There is no certainty in the business, you may go bankrupt as well.🧐

Entrepreneurship is not magic, which when you build your own business, you will earn. There is no guarantee of doing business, you can earn and you can even go bankrupt! It is up to you whether your business succeeds or vanishes like a bubble.

Possible reasons for losing your business:

✔Your product can be bought today, but tomorrow… not anymore!

✔Your price may be too high or it may be too low, you lose!

✔Your location may be too hidden, inaccessible or invisible to customers.

✔ Can be too far, hard to get to.

✔You can neglect your companions or yourself!

2) You may not be giving your business enough time. 🤔

Building your own business is not easy, it takes a long time. If you do not have enough time for it, it will probably just fall apart. Everyone can do business, but not everyone can last. So if you want your business to last, you must devote your time to it. Analyze and learn the things you need to do for the success of your business.

3) You may not be ready or you may not be able to handle the responsibilities.🤨

Entrepreneurship is not a game, which when you start, then you get tired or you get bored, you just stop! It just means one thing..You are not ready or you can not handle a big responsibility. Before you start a business, ask yourself .. "Am I doing business?" Do you have the qualities of a good businessman?

‌✔ Hardworking

‌ ✔ Patient

‌✔ Dedicated and Caring not only to your business but also to your business colleagues especially your customers.

‌ ✔ You must continuously improve your service and product.

‌✔ Must have strategy and good planning. When planning, you must take the right action.

‌ ✔ Credibility must be taken care of, Able to keep the conversation and trustworthy. When you have these qualities, you can say business

Now, let's talk about how to plan a business. Planning a business

Step 1. Find an opportunity to meet the needs of others.

✔ There are things that your customer needs. If you are an entrepreneur, you will find a way for you to give it to them. For example, in the rainy season today, you need an umbrella and a raincoat at this time, you can make selling it a business.

Step 2. Know your interest that you can make a business.

✔ When you want to start a business, it is important that you are interested or that you want the business you enter to succeed in it. You already make money, you still enjoy it! because this is really what you want to do.

Step 3. Find out if you know anything about the incoming business.

✔ It is also good that you have enough knowledge or skills in the business to enter so that it is easy for you to manage it.

Step 4. Find out how much capital you need to start a business.

✔ You cannot start a business without investment. Find out how much it will cost you to get your business started.

Step 5. Find out the location where you will place your business.

✔ The business is like a plant, you have to put it where it grows. A great location for your business is where customers can easily find or go.

Step 6. Find out who your competitors are in your business.

✔ It is good to know the competition. Who are the people like you who have the same service or product offered. Learn how to promote your business to others. Plan and think of things you can offer your customers that no other competitor can do.

The Contract

"You know how important this is. You must be at your best. Your people must be at their best. You can do this. We can." Claire Beauchamp gives herself a pep talk before heading out the door. Her small medical group was going for a contract to provide medical care, on-site, for the workers of Lallybroch Distillery. If they get it, Lambert Medical Group's financial worries will be over. If not, she might have to shut down the group and take a job under someone else. So, no pressure. Just enough to make her feel like her head is about to explode and tie her stomach in knots.

James Fraser dresses in the jeans and flannel shirt of his work crew instead of his suit and tie. He is going undercover today to personally check-out Lambert Medical Group. The health of his employees is to important to leave to chance.

"So ye will be Alex Mackenzie today and I am to greet the lass and her crew in your steed." Murtagh Fitzgibbon, his CEO and Godfather, confirms.

"Aye. Tell the lass I will be available later today and ye will be evaluating her group for me."

"Aye. I have heard good things about her group."

"As have I. But, will leave naught to chance."

"Miss Beauchamp. Welcome to Lallybroch." Murtagh greets her an hour later.

"Thank you Mr Fitzgibbon. We are very happy to be here. Will Mr Fraser be joining us soon?"

"He has been unexpectedly delayed. But, I ken what he is looking for and stand ready to evaluate ye in his place." She follows him to the warehouse that had been cleared of barrels and filled with tables and chairs. A makeshift clinic.

"It is temporary," Murtagh assures her," if ye get the contract, a permanent area will be established for yer needs."

"This will do quite nicely. Thank you. Give us ten minutes and you can bring in the first patients." He nods, bows, and leaves her and her crew to set up."

"Can you believe Mr Fraser, himself, wasn't here to greet us?" She mumbles to her best mate and best nurse Geillis Duncan.

"He is a busy man. And, Mr Fitzgibbon is his CEO. Keep the big picture in mind."

"You are right. Thanks Gell."

"What are best mates for?"

"Initial impression?" Jamie asks Murtagh as they wait for her to set up.

"Neat, business focused, capable, adaptable. All around good first impression."

"Good."

They are ready in eight minutes. Geilles sets up triage and they start seeing the Lallybroch workers.

"So, how long have you had that cough?" Claire inquires of the businesse's barrister, Ned Gowan.

"A few weeks now. I thougjt it the change of weather. But, it is starting to keep me up at night."

"So, it is worse when you lay down?"

"A bit." She nods and listens to his chest and back.

"I am afraid you have a case of asthma. A mild one. I will prescribe some inhaled steriods and a rescue inhaler. That should do the trick. No smoking. No strenuous activity. If you are no better in a few days, come see me or go to the hospital."

"Thank you Miss Beauchamp."

"My pleasure Mr Gowan."

"What can I do for you Mr Mackenzie?"

"Just a check-up. I've naught wrong with me but, figured a check-up canna hurt. With the company paying and all."

"It is better to catch problems early. Quite smart Mr Mackenzie."

"Alex. Ye can call ne Alex Miss Beauchamp."

"Alex it is. I am Claire."

"Sorcha."

"What is that?"

"It means Light and is ye name in the Galiec."

"Oh. Well, please roll up your sleeve Alex, so I can get your blood pressure." He does, exposing muscles shaped by lifting barrels all day.

"My God. You are huge!" It is out of her mouth before she has time to think. She wishes she can call it back. Blushing fiercely, she continues," I mean, I will have to get the larger size cuff." She bends over her supply box, taken her time to go through it. She is mortified. She is here to get an important job, not to make inappropriate comments to her, please God, future patients.

Jamie has to hold in his laugh. He also must focus ion the task at hand. He is to be evaluating her. Not flirting with her, no matter how much her whisky eyes pull him in.

"This should do." She places the cuff on his arm and pumps it up. Placing the stethoscope on his arm, she listens. "130/60. Perfect."

"Ye dinna use an automatic cuff, then?" He asks as she removes it from his arm.

"No. I have them. I just find I trust my ears more. Now, if you would prefer I check it with?"

"Nae Claire. Just curious." And quite impressed. He likes that she trusts herself over a machine.

"Okay. Now take off your shirt. I must listen to your chest and back." He does and she loses her breath. He is big, everywhere. Well, everywhere she can see. She wonders....No! She firmly cuts off that line of thought.

She warms the stethoscope before placing it on his massive chest. He notes that too. She closes her eyes, focused, as she listens to the healthy thump of his heart. His lumgs are just as healthy. She then kneels before him to listen to his stomach.

She is trying to kill me," Jamie thinks as the lass kneels before him. He kens it is just to listen to his wame, part of her though exam. He ken'd it. His cock on the other hand.. He prays she can't feel what she is doing to him.

Owner screws me over, screws up(s) his business.

To start, I won’t be saying the name of the shipping company franchise I worked for, suffice to say the title is very telling. This is a rather long story, so buckle in. You can skip the backstory and look for the revenge near the bottom. TL:DR at the end.

The Backstory

About five or six years ago I was relatively new to the workforce, having worked one minimum wage job at Mickey D’s. I had been there almost two years, but had little experience elsewhere. Well this one lady always came through early every morning to order a large Diet Coke, and would take a few minutes to talk to me. I mentioned to her that I was displeased with my bosses and the working conditions, and she invited me to come apply for a job at Not FedEx because they were always running low on employees! That should have been my first red flag.

The second red flag went completely over my head, because at this point I was 17 with no previous job experience. When I walked in for an interview, the boss (who I will call Jeph, because it sounds close enough to his name to allow him to remain anonymous) told me it would take five minutes. I wasn’t asked about my relevant experience, my goals within the company, or even told what position I was applying for. I assumed all interviews were different and went along with it, and started the next week with training. Everything went well for the first month. I basically just packed boxes, took down customer information, and sorted mail into the mailboxes we managed. The real trouble started after I was given my one month performance review.

I was deemed to be a valuable asset to Jeph’s franchise, and rightfully so. At 17 I was able to lift more and work better than the 20 and 30 something employees, and due to the work ethic my parents drilled into me I was never slacking off while at work. I was then informed that I would be swapping between Jeph’s two franchises, roughly 30 miles apart. (For context, the franchise I APPLIED TO WORK AT was roughly a mile from my house, so I could walk if I couldn’t get a ride.) Every other day I had to drive out to the location and somehow justify this with my slightly above minimum wage job. ($7.50 for those not in Texas.)

Overall my boss was a massive douche. His physical appearance could best be described as “troll like” with a shirt almost bursting, the top always undone to showcase his aging chest hair, and a face not unlike that of A&F owner Mike Jeffries. He openly cheated on his wife, bragging to coworkers about it constantly. He charged people one dollar for any amount of extra tape they needed on their package, despite the fact that we got roughly two rolls for that price in bulk. He had a special price calculator installed on the computers that charged people roughly 10% more than the package would be elsewhere. He would push employees (who he insisted didn’t work in customer service but sales) to never offer anything less than three day shipping even though we offered standard 7+ days and even cheaper options. I watched him actively lie to customers, claiming it was the price they had to pay blah blah blah, and almost yell at them to go to another store if they didn’t like it. But I digress.

Now here was the first dickish thing that my boss did to me specifically. Until this point, I was only working around 20 hours. After I graduated to working at both stores, Jeph had me sign a brand new W-2 for his second store, which was under a different company. (He owned both, naming one Blue (name for a .44 caliber bullet) and Blue (proper name for visible light)). Again, I had very little idea that this wrong because I had never had to deal with this before. He proceed to add another 20 or so hours to my schedule, bringing me up to 40 hours or more. But since I worked for two separate companies I never earned a dime of overtime or benefits of any kind.

At this point, I started accruing more and more duties, as my boss and coworkers started to trust me more and more. Buy my fourth month of employment (out of a total of eight) I was performing managerial duties such as: opening the store, counting the registers, closing the store, ordering product such as boxes and tape, and preparing shipments for transport. The work alone justified a raise, not to mention the hours I was being asked to work. However when I floated this idea by my boss, he very rudely insisted that since he had a manager for each store already, I was just doing my job and couldn’t earn a cent more.

Then came the second dickish move. We had a large company contract some drop off stuff with us, a telecom company we will say rhymes with Hey Tea and Tea. Customers would bring in their old cable boxes, wires, remotes and the like, and we would scan them and ship them back to Hey Tea and Tea, the company THAT LEGALLY OWNED ALL OF THIS HARDWARE. The customers would not pay us a nickel, but the telecom company would pay almost double what it actually cost to ship the package. There is no way Jeph could look that gift horse in the mouth and decide he was still owed the stable and all the horse’s tack as well, right? Surprise, surprise, Jeph had to take it one step further. ANY and ALL parts/cables/WiFi adapters/USB drives the customer returned to us that didn’t have a scan tag on them, Jeph would pull aside and either strip for copper or sell on eBay. And he would force us, the employees to package his eBay sales or copper wiring into boxes and ship them for him. He even popped batteries out of remotes and recycled them somewhere to get a tax credit. None of his employees ever saw a penny of this money (not that I would have accepted it). We estimated he raked in roughly three to four thousand a month just from stealing alone. For those of you bad at math, that is the price of TWO brand new 2018 Honda Civics.

The Revenge

The third (and fourth) final dick moves are what solidified my hatred for this boss, and my desire to strike back. They both came in the same week, roughly the same time, and both viscerally repulsive. My favorite coworker had recently gotten pregnant, and although the father got the hell out of dodge when he found out, she was doing very well for herself. She and I frequently closed together, and she promised she would bring the baby to sit in the back for the dull hours we had to kill from 6-10. We also had an annual store review from corporate that week, so our boss called a late night meeting after we closed one day. Our boss started out by saying that he was proud of our pregnant coworker for working so hard even with her “disability.” (Yes, even his sense of humor was slimy.) Then, in front of all fifteen employees, HE FIRED HER. He told her that because the Christmas season was coming up, and she would only slow down the store being pregnant and all, he had to let her go.

After she left, hatred seething in her eyes, he turned back to the fourteen of us who were left stunned, and continued on like nothing had happened. He proceeded to tell each of us our jobs for this weekend, leaving mine for last. My job, because I used to drive a decently sized mini van, was to ferry the corporate required supplies, cash for the safe, and OUR ONE WORKING FIRE EXTINGUISHER between the two stores while he kept corporate distracted between visits.

At this point I had taken enough shit from this guy, and I formulated my plan. I started by calling the Hey Tea and Tea fraud department, and telling them everything I knew. I took pictures and emailed them directly to the rep I was talking to, who seemed a little too excited about fraud being committed. I then scheduled a visit from a Hey Tea and Tea rep at the same time corporate was supposed to show up. My next step was to call Not FedEx and explain exactly what I just told y’all, with a few extra things thrown in that I couldn’t share for privacy reasons. They promised to send a rep as well, to the same store, at the same time.

The final step was put into action that Saturday. I dutifully loaded up my van with the supplies, cash (upwards of $4000 if I remember correctly), and fire extinguisher, and headed out. Except I did the exact OPPOSITE of what Jeph wanted. I took the crap to the first store he owned, which was the second one to receive a visit. After he texted the team saying they were moving on, I packed up all the shit and drove it to the other store they just left. Now I am unsure exactly what happened at the other store, but from some coworkers I pieced together that the Not FedEx rep showed up right after I left, but didn’t stay long, and the Hey Tea and Tea rep showed up just before Jeph had arrived and had time to hide his ill gotten gains in his office. The one coworker who was close enough to the office during the corporate meeting said there was lots of angry words being thrown and threats being made towards Jeph and his position as a franchisee. He also lost his franchises the ability to ship for Hey Tea and Tea, at least for a period of time.

Regardless, the very next day I was off because I was (and as cliché as this sounds I swear to God it’s true) helping my grandfather who just got out of the hospital. I receive a call from Jeph, saying I needed to come in right away, and work a double shift as well as close the store. I told him I couldn’t do that, and I was taking a personal day. He fired me right then and there, citing my usage of the work computer to run a photoshop business during work hours. (I’m assuming he was referring to the graphic design work I did FOR HIM, FOR FREE, which he asked me to learn how to do.)

The sad epilogue to this whole story is that he is currently still in business, and still running the same scams he was before. He WAS however fined for not having proper supplies in his stores, as well as forced to use corporate’s package rates rather than his own. So in some small way my revenge worked. He currently has a two star review on Yelp for both of his his businesses, and I hope to have a party outside his store one day when it goes belly up.

TL:DR: Boss is a total douche bag to me and customers, steals from a contract company, fires a pregnant woman for “slowing down the store” then gets his ass reamed by corporate and loses the major contract.

Week 12 progress

Well I was out of town for the week so my business was kind of on a pause but I was back for satuday and Sunday. Pretty much I didn’t have a chance to work for more than a few hours but nothing has changed at all my advertising methods have picked up over the week I started putting flyers out in more common places. The word has really gotten around town about my service and over the week I’ve been contacted a few times by new clients but unfortunately had to turn them down, but business seems to have peeked and I’m learning new things about how to manage a business each day. Mostly how important advertising and customer service is to maintain consistency in a businesse’ revenue. Also I had 3 away game this weekend so I didn’t have access to my computer so I apologize for the format it won’t let me change it in any way.

In order to get the money you want" you have to put in work beyond belief... When you don't want too. When your tired. When you get a few extra dollars you have to invest. Tear Gas Is Significantly More Dangerous Than Police Suggest — Especially During the COVID-19 Pandemic

When police launched tear gas into the crowd, Chowdhury pulled off her mask as she gasped for air. “I couldn’t breathe,” she said. “I felt like I was choking to death.” The chemical agent also seeps into homes, contaminates food, furniture, skin and surfaces, and can cause long-term lung damage.

Photo: Lucxama Sylvain / Pexels When Amira Chowdhury joined a protest in Philadelphia against police violence on Monday, she wore a mask to protect herself and others against the coronavirus. But when officers launched tear gas into the crowd, Chowdhury pulled off her mask as she gasped for air. “I couldn’t breathe,” she said. “I felt like I was choking to death.” Chowdhury was on a part of the Vine Street Expressway that ran underground. Everyone panicked as gas drifted into the dark, semi-enclosed space, she said. People stomped over her as they scrambled away. Bruised, she scaled a fence to escape. But the tear gas found her later that evening, inside her own house; as police unleashed it on protesters in her predominantly black neighborhood in West Philadelphia, it seeped in. “I can’t even be in my own house without escaping the violence of the state,” said Chowdhury, a rising senior at the University of Pennsylvania. On Wednesday, she said her throat still felt dry, like it was clogged with ash. The Philadelphia protest was one of many instances in recent days in which police launched tear gas — a toxic substance that can cause lung damage — into crowds. In a statement, Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said that officers had no choice but to release it after protesters threw rocks at them and refused to disperse, and that officers also used nonchemical white smoke to minimize the amount of the irritant “while maintaining a deterrent visual effect.” She called it “a means to safely a volatile and dangerous situation.” But tear gas is not safe, according to a number of experts interviewed by ProPublica. It has been found to cause long-term health consequences and can hurt those who aren’t the intended targets, including people inside their homes. This would be enough of a problem in normal times, but now, experts say, the widespread, sometimes indiscriminate use of tear gas on American civilians in the midst of a respiratory pandemic threatens to worsen the coronavirus, along with racial disparities in its spread and who dies from it. “As an immunologist, it scares me,” said Dr. Purvi Parikh, an allergy and immunology doctor at NYU Langone Health. “We just got through a brutal two months, and I’m really scared this will bring a second wave sooner.” It puts black communities in an impossible situation, said Dr. Joseph Nwadiuko, an internist and researcher at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. Thirteen of the 15 coronavirus patients in the intensive care unit where he works are black, he said. “I worry that one of the compounding effects of structural racism is you’ll see a second wave of black patients, including those who were out there defending their lives.” On Tuesday, an open letter signed by nearly 1,300 medical and public health professionals urged the police to stop using “tear gas, smoke, or other respiratory irritants, which could increase risk for COVID-19 by making the respiratory tract more susceptible to infection, exacerbating existing inflammation, and inducing coughing.” Here’s what you need to know about tear gas and how it’s being used by law enforcement in recent days.

Tear gas can cause long-term harm, by making people more susceptible to contracting influenza, pneumonia and other illnesses.

Tear gas is the generic term for a class of compounds that cause a burning sensation. Most law enforcement agencies in the U.S., including the Philadelphia Police Department this week, use a chemical called CS, short for 2-chlorobenzalmalononitrile. CS activates a specific pain receptor, one that’s also triggered by eating wasabi, said Sven-Eric Jordt, a professor of anesthesiology at Duke University. But CS is much more powerful, up to 100,000 times stronger than the sting from wasabi, he said. “They are really pain nerve gases. They are designed to induce pain.” CS is particularly painful when it gets on your skin or in your eyes. (Doctors have advised protesters not to wear contact lenses.) When inhaled, the pain induces people to cough. The compound degrades the mucus membranes in your eyes, nose, mouth and lungs — the layers of cells that help protect people from viruses and bacteria. Scientists know little about how CS affects the general public. The most comprehensive studies were conducted by the U.S. military on thousands of recruits who were exposed to tear gas during training exercises. Afterward, it left them at higher risk for contracting influenza, pneumonia, bronchitis and other respiratory illnesses. The soldiers were generally healthier than the average person, with fewer underlying conditions like asthma or heart disease. Studies of civilians in Turkey found that people who are repeatedly exposed to tear gas are more likely to have chronic bronchitis or chest pains and coughing that can last for weeks. It may also be linked to miscarriages. The effects worsen as people are repeatedly exposed to higher doses, Jordt said, but it’s hard to measure the concentrations of tear gas during chaotic protests, and many who are affected will be reluctant or afraid to seek medical help. Parikh, the Langone Health doctor, is particularly worried about children at the protests. Their lungs and immune system are still developing, and tear gas could lead to neurological problems or permanent skin or eye damage if it’s not washed off quickly. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, severe tear gas poisoning, particularly if the gas was released in an enclosed space — can blind or kill people through chemical burns and respiratory failure. Prisoners with respiratory conditions have died after inhaling tear gas in poorly ventilated areas. On Wednesday, an inmate at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn died after guards sprayed him with pepper spray, another kind of tear gas that causes similar health effects as CS. In a statement, the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Prisons said the inmate, Jamel Floyd, was caught “breaking the cell door window with a metal object” and “became increasingly disruptive and potentially harmful to himself and others.” Medical staff “immediately responded to assess the inmate, found Mr. Floyd to be unresponsive, and instantly initiated life-saving measures.” An investigation is underway.

Tear gas can increase the spread of the coronavirus and might make some people more vulnerable to catching it.

It’s too early to know exactly how tear gas affects coronavirus patients. But Parikh said they both cause lung inflammation. “Anything that’s an irritant can cause that same inflammatory response,” she said. “Your lungs can fill with mucus and it can be very difficult to breathe. The muscles narrow; it’s almost like breathing through a straw.” People with asthma and other respiratory illnesses already have higher baseline inflammation that makes them more susceptible to catching infections like the flu or the common cold, Parikh said, so tear gas could trigger an asthma attack or weaken the body’s ability to stave off COVID-19. “If your lungs are already wheezing and coughing, working hard to expel this tear gas or this irritant, it’s unable to have that reserve to fight off any infection, whether a virus or bacteria,” she said.

Photo: Koshu Kunii / Unsplash Talia Smith, a graduate student at the University of Nebraska, said it only took a whiff of tear gas to trigger an asthma attack when she was protesting in Omaha last Friday. She could barely feel it in her eyes, but her throat “just immediately started closing,” she said. Smith had brought her inhaler, but the medication inside was running low. She’d only had one asthma attack in her life before this. Smith had a burning feeling in her chest for days afterward, and she went to get tested for the coronavirus; the results are pending. She worries that if she catches the virus while still feeling the effects of the gas, she’d be fighting off the disease while her lungs aren’t at full capacity. Parikh said there’s not enough data on asthma and the coronavirus in general. While asthmatics are at higher risk for all respiratory infections, asthma isn’t among the top chronic conditions for the most severe coronavirus patients. “We are still seeing many asthmatics get it,” so it’s too soon to say there’s no risk at all, she said. Tear gas weakens the demonstrators’ protections against the coronavirus, said Dr. Abraar Karan, a physician at Harvard Medical School who’s working on the coronavirus response. Infections increase when people cough or talk loudly, he said, and even if someone is wearing a mask, when they’re hit with tear gas, they’ll take off the mask as they’re coughing. “Not only are you vigorously coughing, you’re vigorously inhaling to try and get more air in.” Panic can cause a stampede, forcing people into close proximity as they’re expelling large droplets from their mouths, he said, perfectly describing the situation that Chowdhury experienced on Monday. Karan said he’s worried that protests could turn into superspreading events, yet he also understands why people feel they must be there. “At the same time, I’m worried about my patients who’ve been destroyed by systemic racism. So racism is killing them as much as a pandemic is.” It will take at least another week before researchers can study whether the protests led to outbreaks. Even then, it will be hard to tell whether the infections were caused solely by the large gatherings or whether tear gas contributed to the increase.

Protesters aren’t the only people at risk. Tear gas is entering homes and businesses.

Jordt said he was surprised by the sheer quantity of tear gas used by police in recent days, based on what he’s seen in online videos and news clips. Instead of reserving it for the most extreme situations, “it’s more like fumigating and flushing people out,” he said. “Tear gas has become a 1st line response, not a last resort,” he added in an email. Because many protests are occurring in residential neighborhoods, tear gas is now seeping into homes. Parikh compared it to secondhand smoke. “It’s a terrible situation,” she said. “To be honest there’s not much you can do.” Chowdhury, the UPenn student who participated in the Philadelphia protest, said she couldn’t keep out the gas, even when she stuffed T-shirts and towels under the doors and windows. She could still smell it the next morning. If the gas gets indoors, people should wipe down their countertops and other surfaces with large amounts of water and soap, Jordt said. Any food that wasn’t in a closed container could be contaminated and should be thrown out, and in extreme cases with large amounts of tear gas, residents and business owners may need to contact fire departments for recommendations of professional cleaning services, he added. Companies like Aftermath offer services for biohazard and infection control. Its website’s section on “tear gas removal” says the chemical “leaves behind residue that can present serious health hazards if not properly treated. ... Tear gas residue can seep into porous materials like furniture, mattresses, clothing, carpet and even hardwood floors, and continue to irritate the mucous membranes of anyone residing in or visiting the property long after the incident.”

Police tactics and tools can make matters worse.

There are many different forms of tear gas and many ways to use it, said Anna Feigenbaum, the author of a recent book on the history of tear gas and an associate professor of communication and digital media at Bournemouth University in England. Police can spray it from cans, shoot canisters or throw grenades. Manufacturers sell grenades that produce light and noise as they expel tear gas and “triple-chaser” canisters that break into multiple pieces when they land so the gas can cover a larger area. The technology for deploying tear gas is advancing far more quickly than scientists’ understanding of the impacts, Jordt said. “While use of these is escalating, there is a vacuum of research to back up the safety of high-level use.” Feigenbaum said the current situation is dangerous because law enforcement has used tear gas “at close range, in enclosed spaces, in large quantities, fired directly at people, used offensively as a weapon and in conjunction with rubber-coated bullets as a force multiplier.” Last weekend, a college student in Indiana lost his eye when a tear gas canister hit his face. Tear gas is banned in international warfare, but it is classified as a “riot control agent” that law enforcement can use for crowd control. Yet instead of calming the situation, tear gas can sometimes “cause counter aggression,” Jordt said. “It just doesn’t work well, and it hits the weakest people the most, and causes the most complications in them.” One of the most controversial events occurred on Monday, when law enforcement in Washington, D.C., used tear gas on peaceful demonstrators to clear the way so President Donald Trump could walk to a nearby church for a photo op. A statement from the U.S. Park Police said they used “pepper balls” with an unspecified irritant powder and “smoke canisters.” (A reporter with WUSA9 tweeted photos on Thursday of CS containers that he and his team said they found at the site.) The CDC uses “tear gas” as the catch-all term for many “riot control” compounds with similar effects. Monica Sanders, who lives across the river in Alexandria, Virginia, said she could see the smoke from her house, like something from a “dystopian reality.” A University of Delaware professor who specializes in disaster management, Sanders said she’d thought about attending that protest but decided against it because her lungs were still weak from an earlier infection that might have been the coronavirus. Although she never got tested, Sanders said she came down with a respiratory illness in mid-February that almost sent her to the emergency room. She is a triathlete with no history of asthma. Last October, she swam a 5K race. Today, she can’t even swim a mile. She said, “There are other ways to do crowd control that don’t involve creating respiratory ailments during a pandemic, in a city that doesn’t have enough supplies.” Maya Eliahou and Caroline Chen contributed reporting. Long Time Coming

So I haven't been racing nearly as much as I would like to have been but I've had a lot going on off the track I simply haven't had the time or money to do so. Anyway to businesse. Practice we had an issue with low end acceleration so came in running about 7/16. Had a quick look and sorted it as best we could for qualifying which went well allowing us to start 3/16. I've always said a good qualifying means a bad race which was half true today. The start was to be expected as I was slow off the line due to the low end power issue not being completely resolved causing me to lose one place by the first corner. I held on though knowing I was slightly faster waiting for a mistake. It came when we were lapping a back marker, where he wanted to get past too quickly and forced the overtake causing him to be on the wrong side of the track with nowhere to go making the pass very easy for me putting me back in 3/16. However, a few laps later the driver behind me took advantage of my wide line and got in front of me. I was quicker but not quick enough to get past. After about 15 laps of me following him with no mistakes, and with 5 laps to go I tried to turn up the pressure but kissing his bumper in areas of the track to tell him that I was right there and to get him to think more about me than the track ahead of him. This also didn't work meaning I finished 4/16 about an inch behind the person in front but it was by far the most intense race I've had for a while. Until next time...
