20 questions for fic writers

1. how many works do you have on ao3?

2. what’s your total ao3 word count?

1,392,316

3. what fandoms do you write for?

I tend to be a serial fandom monogamist; right now I'm writing for CQL/The Untamed, but my other biggest fandoms were White Collar and Hockey RPF (biggest in terms of how much I wrote for them, not the size of the fandom).

4. what are your top 5 fics by kudos?

So Wise We Grow and its sequel, it may be that the gulfs will wash us down (Star Trek AOS); Unorthodox Methods (SPN/White Collar crossover); Living Proof (White Collar); and Concord (The Untamed).

5. do you respond to comments? why or why not?

Almost always! If I'm feeling really low-energy, I may not reply to comments that are solely emojis, but I try to respond to those as well with at least a thank-you. The only exception to my general policy of responding is comments where I seriously cannot tell if they are positive or negative (e.g., "I hate you for making me cry" - I get that one a fair amount), because I don't want to be like "I'm glad you liked it!" when they actually didn't - I feel like that would make me look really arrogant lol. I respond to comments because I treasure them and want to encourage folks to keep commenting!

6. what is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Definitely Hands Open, Eyes Closed... and I was so bothered by it that I wrote a 200k follow-up getting those characters to their happy ending!

7. what’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Oh, jeez, I almost only do happy endings, so that's tough. I am partial to the ending of Dangerous, which is happy both interpersonally (WWX and LWJ are together! they have a baby!) and politically (that baby is going to blow up entrenched prejudices! yay!)

8. do you get hate on any fics?

I don't, and I have no idea why not, beyond the fact that I usually have anon commenting turned off. Don't get me wrong, I do get strongly negative comments sometimes, but nothing I would characterize as "hate."

9. do you write smut? if so, what kind?

Oh, definitely. I guess I would say I tend toward tender, talky, d/s-inflected smut, but ultimately I do whatever the situation between the characters calls for.

10. do you write crossovers? what’s the craziest one you’ve written?

Almost never - it's pretty much just Unorthodox Methods.

11. have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not to my knowledge.

12. have you ever had a fic translated?

Yes! I've been fortunate to have multiple fics translated, especially my hockey RPF fics.

13. have you ever co-written a fic before?

Nope!

14. what’s your all time favorite ship?

See above re: serial monogamist - right now I would swear that it's Wangxian 4EVA but check back in in a couple years.

15. what’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Definitely my Wangxian lawyer AU. I have big chunks of it written, but it would be more than 100k and I have so many other WIPs in line ahead of it. It'll probably end up as WIP Amnesty, though it breaks my heart to say it.

16. what are your writing strengths?

Dialogue and worldbuilding.

17. what are your writing weaknesses?

Physical description is often an afterthought. I default to describing lighting when I have to set a scene. I struggle to create a sense of the passing of time unless I have an external scaffolding to set the story on - in hockey RPF, the rhythm of the hockey season could give me that scaffold, but in my fics for CQL, the struggle is back.

18. thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

Best kept to a minimum, when it comes to actual dialogue, but when it comes to individual terms (Wen-guniang, hai shi, zhiji, etc., and Russian and Czech terms in hockey rpf), I do it pretty liberally. It's good for English speakers to have to look stuff up sometimes. It builds character. 😂

19. first fandom you wrote for?

Stargate: Atlantis!

20. favorite fic you’ve written?

My favorite fic I've written is actually a WIP Amnesty piece I never finished (but which readers have told me is satisfying as-is, thankfully): The Words in Your Head, an X-Men: First Class modern AU in which Charles and Erik are college students who help start a GSA (that's a gay-straight alliance, for those of you who were not queer teenagers in the late nineties or early aughts 😂) at Raven's high school. It's so personal to me (the kid who started her own high school's GSA 20 years ago) and carries so much of my own feelings about gender and queerness and queer community, and I feel so tender about the characters. I think, ultimately, the fact that it made me feel so raw is the reason I couldn't take it across the line to a polished final draft. But I will love it forever.

I know nothing about sports, so have a belated check please! au hahaha. It is entirely possible that I am the sole target audience for this fic, but I don't mind at all, it made me happy to write it 😌 @gallavichthings

Fuck the LaX Bros nineteen - sports

The trek from Faber to Annie’s is a lot to deal with after the first morning skate of the academic year. Mickey can barely keep his eyes open, letting Sooty and Sweep jostle him along as he lugs his gear on his back and anticipates the sweet sweet joy of his first coffee of the day. Coach Beale has them sworn to no coffee before practice and it sucks fucking ass but damn if he’s gonna lose his scholarship over a cup of coffee. He’s here for the long game, bound for the show, managed to drag himself kicking and screaming out of the hellhole his father calls home and he’s not gonna fuck it up for himself.

The fucking lacrosse bros are there already, ten deep in line and looking extra fucking douchey in their new team get-up. Mickey’d heard from Pots who’d heard from Whiskey that one of the Chads' fathers had forked up a fuckton of cash for new uniforms over the summer, and it looks like the rumors were true. Rich fucking assholes.

The only one of them Mickey doesn’t hate with a fiery passion is Gallagher, scholarship kid just like him, one of four non-Chads on the team. A little earnest but honestly a decent guy, not his fault he got sent to some fancy northside private school by his uncle-who-was-actually-his-dad and ended up the star of their lacrosse team.

They’re friendly, both Chicago guys and both from pretty shitty homes, they sort of ended up the go-betweens for their respective teams in times of deep tension. It’s a new year though so no tensions have arisen just yet and Mickey hasn’t had a reason to talk to him in these first few days since he’d been back on campus. Not that he’s thought much about it. Or at all. He doesn’t think about Gallagher. He didn’t think at all about him all summer, didn’t wonder if he was back in Chicago for the break, like Mickey, didn’t look up whenever he saw a mop of ginger hair in a crowd or scan every L train he got on just in case he might be there. Hasn’t thought about the guy in months, actually.

It’s while Mickey is continuing to not think about him that Gallagher, Ian himself, actually materializes in front of him, holding out a cup of coffee in Mickey’s direction and dimpling at him sheepishly.

“Hey Shaker,” he says, using Mickey’s hockey nickname, the only derivative of milkshake that Mickey would allow when he arrived for his Frog year and got assigned a hockey name by the upperclassmen. He was the only member of SMH to ever have negotiated his nickname, but hell if he was going to respond to people shouting Milky at him across the fucking pond.

“Gallagher.” He replies. Lacross bros don’t give nicknames. Unlike most of the hockey kids their last names are valuable assets and they like to be known by them.

Gallagher holds the coffee out more purposefully towards Mickey, and Mickey notices that he has another in his other hand. Just shy of suspiciously, Mickey takes the cup. It’s not like Gallagher to fuck with the hockey bros, but you never know what happens over a summer break and Mickey can’t be completely certain that this coffee hasn’t been spat in, or shat in, or poisoned.

“They made mine wrong, first time.” Ian says, by way of an explanation. It’s not much of an explanation, and Mickey’s not sure why he’d be first in line to take it off his hands.

“Didn’t want to give it to one of your teammates?” He cocks his most suspicion conveying eyebrow and brings the coffee up to his face to sniff it. Smells ok. Smells fucking heavenly, actually, Christ he’s salivating.

“Nah.” Ian leans in conspiratorially, “Chad Lewin has told me four times already this morning about how his dad is upgrading his Porsche, and Chad Koeple showed up to the house with a 55inch flatscreen and two PS5s. I don’t know what he needs two for. But those fuckers can afford their own coffee, you know?”

Mickey believes him. And it doesn’t have anything to do with how good he smells, fresh from the shower but still warm with his natural musty smell, and it doesn’t have anything to do with how he winks at Mickey and how he apparently has freckles on his eyelids or how he extends his smile to Sooty and Sweep like they’re all just guys, actually, and not sworn rivals on opposite sides of a great chasm.

It’s just that Mickey gets it. Assholes who flaunt their money and take their wealth for granted don’t deserve free coffee, even from their own teammate. It’s this, really, that convinces Mickey to give in to his innermost desires and take a sip.

“I’ll drink to that.” He tells Gallagher, grinning when he laughs and hiding it in his coffee cup.

“Later boys.” Ian says, raising his now free hand in a little wave to all three of them before sliding past them out the door. Mickey steadfastly does not turn his head to watch him go.

“You know, it’s hard to believe that guy is a Lacrosse bro.” Sooty says, and Sweep murmurs his agreement.

“Fuck the lacrosse bros.” Mickey says, invoking the team mantra in the absence of being able to come up with anything else to say. And his teammates laugh as they move up the line.

Mickey’s coffee is hot and sweet. Exactly how he likes it.

WIP Game

Pointedly tagged by @kiwiana-writes and although many of these won't be new from the last two times I played this game (pls allow me to sob about that), I decided I'd throw in everything that's either got a snippet written and/or fully plotted, so there are a couple of new ones. Apparently I just have a handful of WIPs constantly on ice and the rest do turn over lol.

Topgun AU Ideas

As I was scrolling through the Topgun tag on AO3 the other night, I realized that I was starting to see the same tropes and AUs over & over again. And while not a bad thing at all, personally, I'm just starting to get a little bored of reading the same story over & over.

So I started thinking about what kind of AUs I would love to see in the Topgun fandom and then I started making a list and it kind of spiraled out of control. Oops. 😆

Thanks for indulging me 😂 because I love coming up with and talking about my wild headcanons.

My absolute wildest headcanon, which I do not take seriously and no one else should either, is Steve noped out after Endgame because he knew Sam and Bucky were going to start working together. And, well, Papa Lasky’s “never let your old friends meet your new friends” axiom stands across fandoms.

Another one is Thor studies every country/culture’s professional sports in an effort to understand the Realm of Midgard and becomes a hockey fan in the process. I don’t have a fic for this it’s mostly just a funny idea. I think Thor would like hockey.

There’s Sabe the handmaiden having a thing for Obi-Wan, that’s really more Mr’s than mine but we can share it.

Cortana has a twin brother/male alter ego named Anduril. They fight all the time. This is hilarious to everyone except the Master Chief. Anduril looks like Sebastian Stan, because why not. This came from a deleted scene in Exception Handling plus another fic I read.

Din and Bo adopt three girl foundlings and the Royal House of Mandalore becomes Last Man Standing: GFFA Style.

In an offshoot to my MWAS AU, Tom and Chyler have a kid who’s sort of Infinity’s version of Beckett Mariner from Star Trek: Lower Decks. Not QUITE that obstinate but very much the most potent combination of both parents 🤣 I have nothing for it beyond this little scene:

Chyler: *slides report across desk, frowns, crosses arms*

Tom: *reads, sighs* My child.

Chyler: Mm-hm.

I haven’t even settled on whether Lasky Jr. is a son or a daughter, but a son would be Cadmon and a daughter would be named after Chyler’s mom.

🥰 The Last Devil to Die (Thursday Murder Club #4) (Richard Osman, author; Fiona Shaw, narrator) - still loving the characters, love to hang out with them & Osman's plots move along nicely so you don't get bored at all. Fiona Shaw's narration is great & as a little treat she & Osman have a nice little chat at the end.

🥰 Four Letter Word For Intercourse (bendingsignpost) - 194K, destiel AU - adult college student Dean & professor (and phone sex worker) Cas - LOVE this fic so much & had kind of forgotten about it until it came up as a rec in one of my romance discord servers. Just, so good.

😊 Mrs Sidhu Investigates (Suk Pannu, author; full voice cast) - 2 episodes of the BBC Radio 4 program: #1 Murder with Masala; #2 Mrs Sidhu's Dangerous Highland Game - I prefer the slight changes made for the TV show's characterizations but still eminently enjoyable. (Meera Syal still absolutely rules!)

🥰 Lucky Bounce (Cait Nary) - extremely delightful hockey romance. Low/no angst, charming, cutie MCs. Definitely in the 'no plot, just vibes' category which honestly I love when done skillfully.

The only other AU I've published so far is the short one where they're professional athletes. I like it but I'm not the right person to write more because just now I had to google if the word athlete includes football and hockey players... :DD I know nothing about sports (except the one I used to play as a kid).

But angst is more in my wheelhouse (is that the expression??? It sounds weird suddenly :DD I just woke up) so my fav is probably one of these two wips:

- soulmate AU series that has three different versions, one of which is happier than the others (HMMM). All of them include your soulmate's words written on your body, which, yes, is a cliche but I love it so <33

- Groundhog Day AU which is obviously Michael stuck in a loop on the day he made his worst decisions... the mission that I've seen more than any other because I follow speedrunning a bit... the one with so many things I don't understand that it's hard to write it to make sense... yeah. But it'll hurt so good when I finally do it.

I've started these ages ago but haven't finished. I think I'm gonna do the soulmate one this year, though. 👀

Oh and I have to mention the Star Trek AU where Trevor is a half Vulcan battling with all these highly inappropriate feelings towards his colleague Michael. Bad scifi, someone snapping and smut ensues. :DD

I seriously have so many. Iwanna do an Inception AU or a crossover. Same with Breaking Bad. I wanna write a Titanic AU. I wanna do all the AUs in the world and I just don't have time. ;_;

End of the Year Fic Reflections 2022

This was the first year in several years that I deliberately stopped my “write a sentence every day” habit. I realized I was burning myself out a bit, and decided to dedicate this year more to reading and working on my Japanese. And it was really wonderful to not feel internally pressured to write. And I did not write a lot, yes - my wordcount is far lower than in years past - but I got my energy back near the end of the year. Most of my writing was after June, and the vast majority posted in the last 4 months of the year.

I had written a decently sized chunk of a novella earlier this year but fizzled out. What I did write of it was quite fun though! Even just writing a WIP was great, to be honest.

So this came directly from Host Reid from the podcast Fic Clique wanting to pitch the Hamlet Paladin comic as a Yuletide fandom. It was not accepted, and I was like.. Who shall write this, if not me? It was a fun little thought experiment in writing a short, concise fic, and I’m pleased with how it turned out.

Favored (Original Work, Hockey RPF) (2,549 words) - “Thought of a great scene”

After I read Superstition (or rather, listened to it haha), I just kept picturing the actual hockey gods, and the idea that Luc was either destined to be one OR just like a holy demigod of sorts. I particularly had the image of Luc ‘claiming’ his powers when he tore up the poster, and that stuck with me.

Ten thousand thanks to Ischemia for letting me leap around like a three year old in a bouncy house with this AU. It’s genuinely one of my ‘happy place’ AUs to hang out in (the background of my phone is fanart someone drew of this AU, even!) I wrote two chapters of this one-shot collection this year, the convention one and the book trailer one, and both were just so much fun to write. I hope to keep writing in this universe : )

GOO (Fic Clique Podcast RPF) (343 words) - “Just to see if I could”

Look when the hosts of the podcast said “No one’s written RPF for us, someone should” it was like flinging out the Bat Signal into the sky for me. And I answered the call. It was SO fun.

winter's breath has come to carry you (Star Trek: Alternate Original Series (Movies), Star Trek: The Original Series, 陈情令 | The Untamed (TV)) (8,080 words) - “Was joking with my friends and it happened” - Again, not 100% accurate of a tag, but the Fic Clique hosts were joking around on an old episode and created a plot idea for a fic, and for the anniversary episode I wrote it. It was mildly difficult to write, to be honest- had to work around with plot, characterization, etc. In the end I was quite proud of what I wrote.

truth to tell, just being here (housed alone, housed together) (僕のヒーローアカデミア | Boku no Hero Academia | My Hero Academia) (5,725 words) - “Fixing canon”

Canon does fairly alright with the Shinsou & Aizawa relationship in a realistic sense - I don’t see canon having him be formally adopted. But it’s nice to imagine if that was true! So I wrote this as a self-indulgent “It’s Shinsou loving hours over here” fic, ft. Yamadad content that there simply isn’t enough of. This was just a wonderful fic to write and experience, like a warm bath.

said hello to the rising breeze (原神 | Genshin Impact (Video Game)) (4,265 words) - “I just want them to kiss + gift fic honorary mention”

Zhongli and Venti look good together. They should kiss. Wrote this for a friend’s birthday (sup, bmouse). This was just a blast to write, simply put, and I hope to write more Zhongven in the future!

The Yuletide recipient specifically requested post-canon, so that’s what I did! A soft, charming hurt/comfort fic.

So this was a Yuletide treat, meaning it wasn’t my assignment and taking it was optional. However, I found this fandom through Yuletide (on the fandom promo post), played the game, really loved it, and immediately knew I had to write fic for it. This fic hit home for me because I was really drawing from my lived experience as someone who has experienced a lot of culture shock and now works in a job where I frequently help people through culture shock. The ‘great line’ was taken from my own personal experiences with a horrific visa process, because I knew it would have a heavy emotional impact.

A solstice gift for my friend Shade! Writing this was fun as I normally don’t write Character/Original Character, so I get to practice other aspects of my writing skills. The giftee liked it so I consider it a win!

Red Light, pt 1

There was something about the smell of freshly cleaned ice that instantly transported me back to my childhood, and every time I came in to work, that reminder of happier times made the stress of this job worth it. It wasn’t that I disliked my job - in fact, I loved it. But it was stressful managing publicity and media for a hockey team.

The San Fransisco Enterprise has been the best team in the United Federation of Hockey for the past four years. After the retirement of General Manager Christopher Pike, however, the team had been struggling. There were new players, and the team just wasn’t gelling under team captain Jim Kirk. The starting line-up was a hot mess. Kirk was at centre, and a new trade, Spock, had traded in at season start with a personal record for goals from his team on New Vulcan. Spock was a precision player, head always in the game, brain always four passes ahead. Kirk, on the other hand, was a cowboy. He played tight in the corners, and was a hard hitter, but his strategy was better summed up as flying by the seat of his pants. The men had nearly come to blows in practice, and barely tolerated one another on the ice. That conflict made for an uneasy team all around.

Team morale was worsened when ‘Doc’ Puri, the journeyman goaltender who seemed to be able to stop anything, blew out his knee on a road trip. It was a career-ending injury, despite the advances to medicine that had come in the three-hundred plus years since the game had been invented. The new GM had to find another goalie, and quick.

Which is what had been the biggest thing on my plate for the past week. Geoff M’Benga, the second string goalie, was in his first year in the pros. He was competent, but lacked the confidence to truly take the reins as the lead goalie. Talks had been heated, but finally, a trade was made with the Proxima Bees. The Enterprise’s draft pick for star goalie Leonard McCoy. McCoy was considered the best in the league, although his year had been off to a rough start. The man could stop almost anything, but the Proxima defense lines were weak and when they allow fifty plus shots on goal per night, there’s only so much one goaltender can do. McCoy was happy to be traded; the Enterprise had a solid defensive corp led by Montgomery Scott and Pavel Chekov, and the rumour was his marriage had just fallen apart and he was longing to get away from the drama.

I cleared my head of my musings, and filled my coffee cup at the pot in the corner of the office. The rich aroma of the coffee, countered with the cool tang of cleaned ice focused my thoughts on the day’s tasks. The press conference to announce the acquisition of McCoy was scheduled for 10. I needed a tight media release and some smiling players to welcome the new goalie. I pressed the button on my communicator to connect with the changeroom.

“Kirk, Spock, please come to the administrative offices when you’re done showering,” I announced. The loudspeaker in the changeroom would be amplifying my voice over the din created by the showers, and I knew I could expect the men to arrive shortly. I logged into my PADD and pulled up McCoy’s current stats to begin the media release.

“I’m afraid Kirk is outside signing autographs and flirting,” Spock announced as he walked into the office. “I let him know you wanted to see us, and he said he would be up shortly.”

“How are you settling in, Spock?” I asked. The team was ten games into the season, and I’d been hoping to see a more cohesive group by now.

“I’m starting to understand Kirk’s playing style,” he admitted. “It’s not to my liking, but his recklessness does have some advantages.”

“You guys need a team-building retreat,” I laughed. “Strand you on an island so you have to cooperate to survive.”

Spock looked horrified at the suggestion. “Every practice is an opportunity to build our team,” he protested.

“Yeah, but part of what makes a team work is when you like each other. You have to be able to see your strengths and weaknesses and figure out how they complement each other. That’s easier to do when you are not only teammates, but friends,” I offered. He shrugged.

“I’m not sure that Kirk and I are destined to be friends,” he replied, without a hint of malice. “I fear we are too different.”

“More alike than you realize,” I countered. “But I have faith it’ll come.”

“We will see. As interesting as your perspective is, I hardly think you called us in here for a pep-talk,” he changed the subject quickly. The doors behind me opened and Kirk strolled in. Spock must have seen his approach.

“Leonard McCoy should land at nine this morning, and we have a press conference scheduled for ten. Marcus wants a couple of players at the scrum to welcome him. As top scorer and team captain, I felt you two were the obvious choices.” I directed my comments to both men. Kirk smiled his lazy, handsome smile and sat on the edge of my desk.

“Is that the only reason you picked me?” He asked. I raised my eyebrow in question and then realized he was trying to flirt. I sighed and rolled my eyes.

“I’m not one of your puck bunnies, Jim,” I reminded him. “I’m immune to the charms of hockey players.”

“I keep telling you that if you just give me one chance, I can change your mind,” he teased. I laughed in response.

“And I keep telling you, I am a professional, and cannot compromise my integrity by carrying on with someone at work.”

“That’s kindest way I’ve ever heard someone say that I’m not their type,” he winked.

“I appreciate that you recognize it as that,” I laughed.

“I appreciate that you allow me to continue to flirt with you,” he shrugged. “Keeps my skills up.”

“As if you need practice, Jim Kirk!” I shook my head again, but couldn’t help but smile. Of all the hockey players I’d ever interacted with, Jim Kirk was the safest. He loved to flirt, he loved to play the romance card, but he always respected the women he flirted with, and never went too far, never made anyone uncomfortable. “Now, scoot, both of you. I have work to do.”

I checked over everything that was needed for the press conference. Media release was ready, the new jersey for McCoy had just come up from having his name and number sewn on, scrum room was clean, chairs out, mics working. I placed the script for the GM on the prompter, and made sure it was running at his speed, and then double checked it. Marcus was not the kind of leader to make friends, and he ran a tight ship. He made me uncomfortable, and as a result, I actively sought to minimize our interactions. Being called on the floor because I’d screwed up something simple was not on the agenda.

I was waiting at the zamboni bay doors for the arrival of the new goalie, to bring him to the press conference. The shuttle arrived from the airport just moments after I’d stepped outside. Leonard McCoy stepped out, ballcap pulled low on his brow. He swung his equipment bag over one shoulder and grabbed his stick bag with his free hand. He scowled at me as he approached. I reached for the stick bag and he pulled back.

“I can manage my equipment just fine, sweetheart. Just tell me where it goes,” he growled. I cocked my head to one side and gave him a hard look.

“My name is Samantha Nelsen, not sweetheart. You are welcome to call me Sam, or Ms. Nelsen,” I corrected sharply.

“Where do I stow my equipment, Sunshine?” he snapped.

“I was under the impression this move was a happy one,” I countered, my tone equally sharp and I gestured to a dolly sitting just inside the doors. “Perhaps you can put on your big boy pants before the press conference? You have five minutes.”

He dropped his bags with a heavy sigh and turned to face me. He looked exhausted. His jaw was covered in a three day growth of stubble, and there were bags under his eyes that appeared to be packing their own bags. Aside from that, he was as undeniably gorgeous as all his headshots had made him out to be.

“Ma’am, I’m sorry. I’m running on empty,” he apologized, pulling his ballcap off and rubbing a hand across his forehead. “Lawyer met me at the airport this morning to give me all the paperwork on my divorce. She took everything, the house, the car. She may as well have taken the goddamn team and the whole damn planet. All I’ve got left is my bones.”

“And a shiny new contract with the Enterprise,” I reminded him. “So let’s go counter some bad press with some good, shall we?” I offered a smile, hoping he realized I was effectively erasing his bad first impression. I headed toward the elevator, my heels clicking smartly on the hard cement.

“So you’re the media gal?” He asked, catching up with a quick skip. I pursed my lips and nodded.

“I prefer Manager of Broadcasting, Communications and Public Relations, media gal is kind of old fashioned,” I corrected with a wink, wondering exactly how many times I was going to have to straighten up this man’s language and bring it into the 23rd century.

“Of course, ma’am,” he nodded and bit his lip. I wasn’t sure if he was trying not to smile, or trying to bite back a smart comment. I suspected it might be both. I stepped on the elevator and held the door for him. As the doors closed, I turned and looked him over.

“We need to stop in the office and grab you an Enterprise hat. Get rid of that ratty old Bees one. You glad to be back on Earth, at least?” I asked. He pulled his hat off again, and scrubbed his hand through his short, messy hair. I led him from the elevator to the office and pulled a hat out a closet full of swag.

“I’ll let you know after I’ve had some actual sleep.” He pulled the hat on and checked his reflection in the mirror by my desk, slapping his cheeks a little to wake himself up. “This old face has a few more miles in it, anyhow.”

“Yeah, doesn’t look like you’ve stopped many pucks with it,” I teased, tipping my head toward the doors leading to the media room. He smirked.

“Why, Ms. Nelsen, I’d hazard you just told me you find me handsome,” he teased, meeting my eyes. With his temperament improved, and warmth in his eyes, it was undeniable, the man was stupidly hot.

“Focus on the press conference, pretty boy,” I laughed, opening the door for him. He walked in to the press conference, and I headed to the back of the room to manage the media.
