What I should be doing: cleaning, laundry, wrapping up esta noche es de alegría.
What I'm actually doing: leaving @liminalmemories21 unhinged comments on every chapter of Knave 4. (Join me, won't you?)
But in the meantime, have this mystery snippet from best i never had, the little fic that never ceases to make me smile (and which I'll desperately need after the particular angst of the TiMER fic). Thanks to @carlos-in-glasses, @cold-blooded-jelly-doughnut, @sznofthesticks, @strandnreyes, and @im-overstimulated-and-im-sad for the tags today.
“Carlos, we watched that movie together, remember? [Redacted] was naked on a [redacted] with a [redacted]?”
He hadn’t been, actually, but TK's particular brand of selective memory tends to skew towards nudity once a certain skin-to-shot ratio has been reached. “I remember. You snickered every time anyone said the word ‘bangs’.”
TK hums. “And then you decided that I’m never allowed to eat that much caramel corn again.”

First things first. Yes, Iris is in this alot. No, there is no secret marriage. This is not a spoiler, this was referenced in the previous story in this series. The Carlos in this universe is a step to the left of the Carlos in canon, and he has different experiences. Also, this is my unhinged AU, which means I get to pick and choose which bits of canon I work with. I did not vibe with that one.
Second things second. This was going to be a caper, y'all. It was going to be a short caper. Carlos and TK were going to go to NOLA and help the Leverage crew take care of some business , and, I don't know, eat beignets and popsicles. Why popsicles and not po'boys? Because the last time I was in NOLA I had the best popsicles of my life - they sadly no longer exist, but I can resurrect them for fic. I also had excellent po'boys, but the popsicles were better.
[eyes fic] I don't know what happened? Okay, I do know. One of the weird upsides to writing a series is that you get to deal in consequences and messy afters, and the way that making a decision isn't the end to that decision, and what you did last time around keeps echoing in what you do this time. Nothing exists in isolation. And, I love love a story about what happens after - after the war, after the quest, after the reveal. How do you rebuild, what happens next. That is my die-hard kink. Also, there was S4 of Lonestar and I had . . . thoughts, questions, concerns, reactions. I worked them out in fic.
Third things third. My characterization of Trudie in this fic owes a debt to Mags Bennett in S2 of Justified. She was terrifying, and ruthless, and totally in control, and one of the most interesting characters - she's why that season was so good. Also, go watch Justified, it's fantastic.
Fourth things last. As ever, don't try this at home y'all, this is not how any of this works.

What's your total ao3 word count?
373,444. It’s kind of crazy to think about the hundreds of thousands of words from my fandom board/LiveJournal days that never made it to AO3 (and never will, because yikes).
What fandoms do you write for?
I’ve written single fics in a frankly batshit number of fandoms, but actively: 911 Lone Star, The Magicians, and now Red, White, and Royal Blue (with multiples in Smallville, Firefly, and Supernatural in the past).

Usually! Sometimes they get away from me. The Hunger Games fic, for instances, has a couple pages of comments that went unanswered.
What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Hmmm. I am usually an Angst with a Happy Ending girl without fail, though I’ve written my share of hopeful open endings. Outright angst at the end? Of what’s published, it’s probably either Of All Our Yesterdays, a Black Dagger Brotherhood fic that’s basically about Phury being miserable, or Requiem, a Supernatural/Sarah Connor Chronicles crossover featuring two unlikely protagonists, their shared history, and the shakiness of common ground.
What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Again, I’m generally a purveyor of happy endings, no matter how angsty the journey may be. But in the name of fucking justice for Quentin Coldwater, I’m going with scenes from an unfinished story. Because fuck canon, obviously.
Do you get hate on fics?
Not until recently. Thank you, Iris-hating anon, for ending that streak (not once, but twice!).
Do you write smut?
Somewhere in my writing history, pre-Tarlos me is aghast, but the answer these days is enthusiastically and unequivocally yes.
Craziest crossover:
Besides the aforementioned Supernatural/Sarah Connor Chronicles? I used to love writing crazy, cracky crossovers in utterly serious ways. Supernatural/Grey’s Anatomy. Smallville/Leverage. There’s about 40k of an old Roswell/Angel buried on my passport drive, along with the beginnings of a Smallville/Ally McBeal that literally involved Josh Groban. Of what’s still in public existence… I guess And To All A Goodnight is technically a crossover between books, though they exist in the same canon �� ditto to words to get off his chest, which crosses 911 with Lone Star. scenes is a Win a Date with Tad Hamilton fusion, if that counts, though I took a lot of creative license. Craziest posted, though, has to go to American Hero, which is a Sunshine/Journalism RPF crossover that, more than a dozen years later, I still have no explanation for.

I have! Back in OG Roswell fandom. Though @ambiguouspenny and I have plans. Mwuaha.

What's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Adagio in B-Flat. It’s my white whale.
What are your writing strengths?
Dialogue. Characterization. Usually humor. (The angst goes unsaid.)
What are your writing weaknesses?
Writing action. I live in fear of the day people realize I write tens of thousands of words of nothing but people talking to each other. Also, writing short. I used to be able to bang out fics full of quick, tight snippets, but that ability is gone from me.
Thoughts on dialogue in another language?
I mean, hello. I’ve written my fair share of Spanish dialogue in various fics, as well as some strategic Mandarin back in my Firefly days. I’m all for it, if it’s done well.
First fandom you wrote in?
OG Roswell.
Favorite fic you've written?
Still to build a home. Though I’m looking forward to both the same in every language and the TiMER fic being finished and giving it a run for its money.

Yeah, we went from warm fuzzy domestic feels back to the ongoing smutfest. Spoiler alert: the way Carlos actually answers this is absolutely filthy. 😘

“Sorry, fuck, I just. I don’t know what to do here, TK.” Carlos shrugs and shakes his head, and his little puff of laughter is almost painfully lost. “It’s been so… I don’t know what to do.”
His jaw works its way closed until it’s as clenched as his hands, balled into tight, twitchy fists at his sides, like he can’t let himself reach out to touch. Like he can’t trust himself not to.
In all the things they’ve gotten back, TK never thought they might actually go backward. But here he is, standing fully healed in their home in front of a Carlos he hasn’t seen since they first began — caught between what he wishes he could ask for and what he thinks he’s allowed to have.
Not lost. Torn.
TK moves until their toe to toe and takes his face into both hands, holding his eyes until Carlos can’t resist the closeness without contact and curls his fingers around his hips.
“That’s easy, baby,” TK says, trying to tug him out of the trap of whatever his brain has told him he’s supposed to do. “You tell me what you want.”
