The second outing in the Marvel/Netflix universe, Jessica Jones, was a surprise hit in late 2015, following the success of Daredevil and bringing a relatively recent comic character into the spotlight. Starring Kristen Ritter as the titular private investigator (with super strength and fortitude granted by a post-accident experiment, as does happen) it's far more grounded in the emotional arc of the character than DD, exploring a damaged and traumatised individual as she tries to move forward, haunted figuratively (and literally) by the sociopathic Killgrave (a man with the power of irresistible suggestion, portrayed with terrifying sinister by David Tennant), and her relationship with Luke Cage (Mike Colter in a breakout role) who is in a way a reflection of Jessica, each affecting one another profoundly. The writing is strong aside from a couple of missteps towards the end of a B-plot in this first season, and every performance is excellent. The score provided by Sean Callery is moody and draws heavily from noire conventions, really capturing the grimy nature of this slice of Hell's Kitchen, and the character motifs are strong. Light jazz can go a long way. Highly recommend both. Series 1 streaming on Netflix, soundtrack available on iTunes and Spotify. Bit of a rushed session today, needed to get a pick me up before coming in and that took a little longer than expected. Last minute #soundtracksaturday, so my short notice pick of the week is Netflix's Daredevil (season 1). The series as a whole is solid, with very strong casting and writing, taking a few cues from the maligned Affleck outing, but capturing the grit of the 80s onward reinvention of the character, the grounded feel that earlier (and significantly lower quality) Marvel series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. failed to capture, and remains tied to the overall MCU in a way that doesn't intrude too heavily. The way it captures Hell's Kitchen as a real place, not some extreme depiction to fit a story but a real place with real problems of crime and gentrification, is of special note. It's the start of something great, and a particular shout out has to go to the performances given by Charlie Cox as the titular character/Matt Murdoch and Vincent D'Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, the latter bringing the intimidating character to life in a way that no other depiction had yet. The soundtrack too is amazing, capturing the seedy moodiness required in most scenes, yet still pulling out emotional and hopeful motifs to keep things in balance. John Paesano nailed it. Christopher Nolan's 2005 Batman adaptation/reboot was a fresh change of pace in the canon of comic book films, and hold this week's #soundtracksaturday spot. Nolan has a fantastic visual style, wholly appropriate for the brooding darkness of the Batman universe, something desperately needed after Joel Schumacher's neon clusterfuck, and story wise we are given a solid origin story for one of the most celebrated fictional characters of the 21st century. The cast is fantastic, and although there are a few story stumbles, it comes together to begin a truly great trilogy. Helping this greatly is the epic soundtrack by Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard, driven by low brass and powerful percussion. The cool thing there is how each track is named after a species of bat, really fitting. Available on iTunes and Spotify. Wonder Woman is a breath of fresh air in an increasingly formulaic superhero genre, and that's why it's this week's pick for #soundtracksaturday. This 2017 film directed by Patty Jenkins (Monster is amazing too) and starring Gal Gadot in the titular role (and a fantastic supporting cast with Chris Pine and Robin Wright) is a far better imagining of the iconic DC hero this anyone could have expected after three largely divisive entries into the DCEU. Rather than the stock standard heros versus villains affair, Jenkins presents a powerful look at war, humanity, gender roles, and the idea of a stranger in a strange world that hits almost all of the right beats. The third act falters slightly, but not so much that it takes away from the film as a whole. The soundtrack put together by Rupert Gregson-Williams does a magnificent job of underscoring the film too, building on the character theme from Hans Zimmer and Junkie XL written for BvS, and producing a powerful score that is simultaneously Zimmeresque and wholly his own, really selling the emotion of each scene. I really have to call out the track No Man's Land, which features arguably the best scoring for the best scene in the film. The only thing out of place is the contribution by poor-man's-Björk Sia, which feels soulless and contrived tacked onto the end of it; she's a talented artist, but not a talented singer by any means.
