wild lettuce popped thru soggy concrete, its stalk proudly vertical. and almost a meter tall, as if a dandelion got lucky. the yellow flowers at the top are still young — it doesn’t know it grew into some shade.
on the net, i’ve learned wild lettuce has a mild sedative effect. it was once called the poor man’s opium. if i’m in pain, can i count on it? the incense from the store is also named “opium”. it’s really nice, but it’s a different kind of stalk.
when the rain goes, i know the rental company will come through and disturb the greenery in the vicinity. they may shred this proud plant, but i’m confident it will grow back with just as much vigor.
