"Don't use Libby because it costs libraries too much, pirate instead" is such a weird, anti-patron, anti-author take that somehow manages to also be anti-library, in my professional librarian-ass opinion.
It's well documented that pirating books negatively affects authors directly* in a way that pirating movies or TV shows doesn't affect actors or writers, so I will likely always be anti-book piracy unless there's absolutely, positively no other option (i.e. the book simply doesn't exist outside of online archives at all, or in a particular language).
Also, yeah, Libby and Hoopla licenses are really expensive, but libraries buy them SO THAT PATRONS CAN USE THEM. If you're gonna be pissed at anybody about this shitty state of affairs, be pissed at publishing companies and continue to use Libby or Hoopla at your library so we can continue to justify having it to our funding bodies.
One of the best ways to support your library having services you like is to USE THOSE SERVICES. Yes, even if they are expensive.
*Yes, this is a blog post, but it's a blog post filled with links to news articles. If you can click one link, you can click another.

I was thinking about maybe starting a weekly poll about books from my physical TBR - based on past experience, asking people to vote for books they like leaves behind perfectly good books that people just haven’t read, but it feels like asking people to vote for books they don’t like has an unnecessarily negative vibe? Am I overthinking this?
For context, I’m feeling overwhelmed and trying to downsize my collection of unread books.

Hey New York people!
The city’s libraries have already had to cut Sunday service and limit hours. The new budget being put forward is even worse for libraries and may require the loss of another day of service.
Please contact City Council and the Mayor asking for budget restoration

Hi Mr Gaiman!
What’s your opinion on people saying someone is only a real fan of something if they consumed all of the available media of that thing? (e.g. “you aren’t a real fan of sandman if you only watched the netflix series”)
I feel like more and more people do this to sort of gate keep otherwise amazing fandoms and personally i think it’s quite sad to see.
As I posted on a more or less dead site a couple of years ago:

Replenishing the Nonfiction Stack; or, We're Calling the Book Buying Ban a Wash, Officially.
I am not, apparently, immune to coupons for niche nonfiction that's directly up my alley (octopus minds and RUSSIAN OWLS, hello??? Thanks, bookshop!).
I thought perhaps the BURGLAR'S GUIDE would also be covered under said coupon, since it was publisher-specific (alas: it was Not, but we might as well bundle for shipping purposes). And then while I was shopping IRL for gifties I found a copy of ROOM, which has been on my list for...ever? So! Hopefully these will hold me over on the nonfiction front for a minute!

The Saint Martin's Press boycott is ongoing.
I’ve been seeing a lot of people discrediting it by saying it will harm the authors, despite it being made clear that it is a MARKETING boycott - you can still buy and read the books! Just don’t post about them. Finding the publisher of a book is easy too, hence these graphics I made!
You can find these graphics to download/share and more info about the boycott here.
