It’s day 7 of the #cinemaspinschallenge by @talesofvinyl: The Blue Lagoon - Blue Vinyl. John Barry - The Deep (Casablanca, 1977) This film had some thrills and spills, but certainly wasn’t the blockbuster anyone hoped for. I remember enjoying it at the time but never gave the music a second thought until I spotted this while crate digging. Side one is a “ballet suite” using all the themes Barry developed for the film - smooth yet moody stuff. Side two has two Donna Summer songs and a “disco” calypso tune by Beckett. While the idea of Barry going disco delights the mind, it doesn’t quite live up to the possibilities. It’s day 13 of the #mentalhealthvinylchallenge by @vinylthingsclub: Nostalgia - A Nostalgic Album. Various Artists - 41 Original Hits From The Soundtrack To American Graffiti (MCA, 1973/80) I have a complicated relationship with the idea of nostalgia, especially when it comes to music. Good music is always good music - and vice versa. And no amount of past entanglements with bad music can improve it, so I would never listen to something just because I originally heard it at a certain time in my life. But this album fits the bill in more ways than one as it was a very considered exercise in nostalgia, as early rock’n’roll had a revival in the early 70s and this movie and album were prime drivers of that. For me and my siblings, however, it was our introduction to many classic songs and legendary artists that we weren’t completely aware of as for our parent, rock’n’roll started with The Beatles. I remember we had this on cassette and listened to it a TON, all the while arguing over songs we loved (like Del Shannon’s Runaway) and ones we thought were just weird (The Diamonds’ The Stroll). We also loved the movie (and later Happy Days) and would even watch Sha Na Na if nothing else was on! Later, when it came time for me to get married, I felt I needed to fill some wholes in my collection as we were supplying our (amateur) DJ with the records he needed for the party, along with instructions about which songs to play. This was one of the albums I picked up for him, figuring it was a low-cost one-stop shop of this stuff. 👹 The Ninth Gate (1999) - Wojciech Kila ✅10/10 🔊 Plane to Spain (Bolero) Once you detach the score from the film, a whole other beast emerges. Performed by the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra this soundtrack has thumping force and movement. The dissonant keys and drones seem even more worrisome out of context.
