Ok look we got this adorable part in ep 52 in the jap version and somewhat in the dub but....why? why would he promies this and then three seasons later leave? I mean yeah Atem wasn't supposed to be there but still, why would he leave porr Yugi? Ok don't get me wrong, I'm a sucker for a good soulmate au, but honestly if soulmates existed in real life it'd be horrifying.

Like ok so imagine: You give up on finding your soulmate. There's a couple billion people out there, it's so rare nowadays for soulmates to find eachother. Instead, you find someone to settle down with. They may not be your soulmate, but you love them anyways. You have kids, raise them, you settle down nicely. You're 60 years old, with a loving partner and children, and your soulmate shows up. What do you do? Are you morally obligated to leave your partner and children and leap into the arms of your soulnate for a happily ever after? Do you put your destiny over your family's wellbeing? Does the 2nd half of your soul matter more than your responsibilities towards your family?

Or worse, imagine your partner's soulmate shows up. Now you have to deal with the thought that no matter what, your love will never be as "true" as theirs. What if they decide to leave you after 40+ years together? Did you really ever have claim on them to begin with?

Not to mention, unless this world is a utopia, there's the reality that criminals exist. Do rapists, murderers, and abusers have soulmates? Are they only paired with eachother? Imagine you love a normal life, you think you're a good person, but you find out your soulmate is on death row. What does that make you, if your soulmate is so despicable? If criminals are only paired up with criminals, is it useless to try and rehabilitate them, since their soulmate could easily just tempt them back into a life of crime? Imagine a serial killer soulmate duo. Terrifying.

Or worse yet, imagine if your soulmate dies before you. Then you're left with the sinking dread that you will NEVER be as happy or fulfilled again.
