Blessed Samhain!
Tumblr media
Samhain happens on the 31st of October and marks the last harvest (which means the 3rd). It also celebrates the end of this year before we go into winter.
Samhain is considered as the end of the year for some witches. In fact, Samhain is the last sabbat on the wheel of the year!
Halloween's spookiness is not a random feeling: it is said that on the 31st, the veil between our world and the other is at its thinnest. That means that contacting spirits and passed loved ones will be easier! If you're sensitive to paranormal activity, you might get more ghostly visitors. And since we are more in touch with the other world, divination tools might give more/clearer answers.
How to celebrate Samhain?
Orange, black, red and purple are really great colors for Samhain! Wear them, paint them on your nails, whatever you want to do!
Crystals for Samhain could be smoky quartz, obsidian, carnelian, bloodstone, onyx and amethyst. Of course, if you don't have any of them, don't panic! You can also wear/use crystals that have something to do with Samhain's colors, or just go with your guts! If you feel like wearing a crystal that has nothing to do with Samhain, go for it!
For food, think in-season veggies like squash, or soups. Apples and soul cakes are a great idea, but most importantly… PUMPKINS! Pumpkin bread, pumpkin muffin, pumpkin seeds, anything with pumpkin is a great idea!
I personnally made amazing pumpkin muffins that I bake every year with my mom, but also baked delicious pumpkin seeds and amazing soul cakes. I took this recipe from @halloween-pumpkin-queen and added wiccantips' and wiccancuisine's honey and butter mix on top of the cakes!

Activities
You can keep the pumpkin you used for recipes to carve it: it's a great activity for Samhain! Any divination tool is also great! Get in touch with the other side (in safe ways!) and take some time to yourself to focus on more spiritual things instead of work, school, and other things that might suck out all our energy. Putting yourself in the spooky mood, like watching Halloween movies, or going for a cozier view of it, with wine or cider and a nice blanket after going to take a walk outside.
Appreciate the autumn colors! They'll be gone soon
Think about all your loved ones who passed away (or ancestors you never met but respect). This is, afterall, the time of year when the veil between worlds is the thinnest.
Anyway, Blessed Samhain everyone! Stay safe and enjoy the end of this spooky, but beautiful month

All Souls’ Day/ Souling Day
Tumblr media
The Halton Souling Play. Source: earlofstamford.org.uk
Today is All Souls’ Day, or Souling Day. Keeping with barely concealed Samhain roots, this feast day was traditionally when prayers were offered to the more venal deceased who were confined to Purgatory according to Roman Catholic tradition, a halfway house for those not virtuous enough to enter Heaven after death or wicked enough to thrown immediately into Hell - probably a rather crowded place. The holy day was marked by the baking of soul cakes ready to give out to alms-seeking souling-song singers. Originally the cakes were to pay the singers to pray for the family dead because it was believed that the more prayers said for a loved one in Purgatory, the higher the likelihood of their progress to Paradise. The Reformation abandoned belief in Purgatory, but unsurprisingly the souling-song singers continued to fetch up every 1st and 2nd November, seeking cake and ale, but this time without the obligation of saying any prayers, particularly in the north west of England.
In addition, Soul Plays were performed, autumn versions of the mummers’ plays, and they have been revived in Antrobus in Cheshire. The play’s main character is Dick Tatton, the Wild Horse of Antrobus, a three-legged animal: two of his legs are human and the third is a pole surmounted by a real horse’s skull. The play is at least 400 years old, but the fact Dick is described as a ‘dead horse’ likely links it to the darker horse cult rituals of pagan times. The play revival has expanded to other Cheshire towns and villages such as Cumberbach, Warburton and Halton.

blessed samhain
Tumblr media
this year has been... not great in a lot of ways. Full of loss and struggle and without much to indicate that the future might bring relief from them. If anything, the future’s looking pretty effing grim. So i went a little more solemn for Samhain, with a candle and a smooth stone and quiet reflection on what’s gone that i still miss but also on what’s here that i treasure.
i also made a few tweaks to my soul cakes recipe. While i like the saffron and don’t want to omit it, it does tend to be such a dominant flavour and difficult to balance that i decided to brown my butter and infuse a few saffron threads in it while it cooled. This makes the overall flavour richer and softens the saffron to a lovely background note that doesn’t overwhelm. Also, as i halved the recipe and didn’t want to try to grapple with half an egg yolk, i substituted a tablespoon of applesauce for the yolk. The result was a nice tartness and less richness, which definitely suited my mood this year.
my original recipe can be found here. Modified recipe is as follows:
ingredients:
1/2 c (115 g) butter
small pinch saffron
1/2 c (115 g) granulated sugar
pinch of salt
1 large egg
1 T applesauce
1 1/2 c flour (200 g)
1/2 t baking soda
1/2 t baking powder
2 T cinnamon
1/2 t nutmeg
cinnamon sugar for rolling
directions:
brown the butter (heat slowly in a saucepan. Once it’s melted keep an eye on it, swirling/stirring regularly, until it stops foaming and the solids begin to turn a toasty brown. Be careful not to let it burn!)
set the browned butter aside to cool. Add the pinch of saffron. Saffron can be crushed/chopped first, which is fiddly but helps avoid random saffron strings in your cakes. Once butter is at room temperature, refrigerate it until it’s time to bake.
when you’re ready to make the dough, soften the butter then mix it with the sugar. Beat for at least 2 minutes or until the mixture is very light and fluffy. Add the egg and applesauce and the pinch of salt. Mix thoroughly.
sift the flour with the baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Add to the wet ingredients and mix thoroughly. Dough will be soft and sticky.
Gather the dough and put it on the centre of a piece of clingfilm (plastic wrap). Wrap it, then form it into the rough shape of a log, twisting the edges of the film and rolling the dough out until it is a smooth cylinder.
Refrigerate for at least 30 mins, up to overnight.
at baking time, preheat the oven to 375F/190C. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and have it ready. Remove the dough from the fridge and unwrap it. Roll it in cinnamon sugar until the sides are well coated. Slice it with a sharp knife into rounds about 1/4 inch (6mm) thick. Place these on the parchment-lined sheet. If necessary, pinch and press them until they are a nice round shape. Press a cross into each one using a dull knife (you may need to wet it in between each one, as the dough will stick).
bake for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are just starting to brown and the bottoms are dry. They should still be soft in the middle. Let cool on the baking sheet before removing to a plate.
good with any kind of tea or hot drink of your choice, apple butter, jelly, or just on their own.

Traditional HALLOWEEN Food
Tumblr media
Below are images of food traditionally eaten on Halloween, Samhain and All Saints’ Day:
TRADITIONAL HALLOWEEN FOOD
Tumblr media
Apple Cake - Cakes that incorporate apples in a variety of forms; including diced, pureed, or stewed. They also include common additions like raisins, nuts, and 'sweet' spices such as cinnamon or nutmeg.
Tumblr media
Beef and Guinness Pie - A meat pie with a filling that consists of Irish beef and Guinness - two of Ireland's most famous products. The long slow cooking of the filling creates tender beef and allows the flavor of the Guinness to permeate the meat and the vegetables to produce a thick, luscious sauce.
Tumblr media
Colcannon (Irish Mashed Potatoes) - A traditional Irish dish of mashed potatoes with cabbage or kale.
Tumblr media
Meatball Soup -
Tumblr media
Pumpkin Pie - A dessert pie with a spiced, pumpkin-based custard filling. The pumpkin and pumpkin pie are both a symbol of harvest time and are generally eaten during the fall and early winter.
Tumblr media
Soul Cakes - Also known as a soul mass-cake, this dessert is a small round cake with sweet spices that resemble a shortbread biscuit. They are traditionally made for Halloween, All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day to commemorate the dead in many Christian traditions.

I’m making soul cakes and doing a remembrance ritual for the forgotten on the first day of Juneteenth. I’m prepping for it now and deeply looking forward to it.
This passed year, I discovered so much about my ancestors. Down to where they were sold for 200 dollars. That was incredibly devastating and change the view my myself and how I move through life.
If anyone wants, I can share the site that black folx can use to start digging for their roots as well. Let me know!

Soul Cakes
By Stephanie Greene I’m making soul cakes for Jesse, my lost brother. In times of turmoil, we turn to charms. I don’t have fingernail clippings or tender little bouquets of his hair to include in some spell; I’m improvising here.  The medievals have us beat, reaching as they did, beyond death.  On All Souls’ Day, mendicants went door to door, offering prayers for the errant souls still trapped…
