Double-Mutated Mikey
Chapter 6: Domestication
Continued from the short story written by @boots-with-the-fur-club

The group don't dare turn to look at Mikey.
He's still distracted by the holograms and lo-fi headphones. But that will not keep him for long.
"...Do we tell him?" Raph asks, finally breaking the tense silence.
"I... I don't know. I don't think we should," Donnie mumbles.
"Why not?" Casey asks. "He deserves to know --"
"No," Donnie says, standing up. "No. He... he shouldn't know. Not yet. Not until I can fix this."
Raph stares at him hopefully.
"...CAN you fix it?" he asks, voice breaking.
"Why, my dear Raphala, you wound me!" Donnie exclaims with dramatics, pressing the back of his hand to his fivehead as he pretends to swoon. "What little faith ye mortals have in the great and incredible power of one Hamato Donatello!"
"Can you get him back to normal?" Leo asks a bit more sternly.
"Yes," Donnie says with certainty. "I can 'make a fix, bro'."
Leo grimaces. That doesn't ease him as much as Donnie wants it to, but if he believes he will, then that is it. This is Mikey they're talking about, Donnie will do everything in his powers to return him to normal.
"In the meantime, what do we do?" Raph asks.
"Stay calm, don't get him riled up, keep him out of harm, etc." Donnie says as he starts to type on the computers again. "I'm activating 'Housebound Protocol'."
"What's 'Housebound Protocol'?"
"Have you never once wondered why Splinter didn't escape to the surface when he had rat flu?"
"...No?"
"Well, now you know," Donnie grumbles. "Basically, we'll keep Mikey inside the lair and help him adjust to the mutations while I search for an anti-mutigen formula."
"So... just play nursemaid?" Leo asks. "We're keeping it that simple?"
"I highly doubt it will be 'simple', Nardo," Donnie grunts. "Mikey will likely have episodes of PTSD from the experiments. His body will be adjusting and readjusting to the new changes he's going through. We've already seen a few reactions he may have."
"His vision," Leon noted.
"And his aversion to new people and new things," Casey bemoaned.
"And his vocal chords," Raph reminded.
"Among others," Donnie sighed. "So be on the lookout. I'll be compiling a list of animal traits from each of the species I named... Casey Jr., I hope I can rely on a list of Krang tendencies from you by tomorrow morning?"
Casey perks up and nods.
"You can count on me! I'll do anything for Master Michelangelo -- er, Mikey," he says, finishing with a nervous chuckle. "But... we don't tell him about the mutations? Or what he has in his DNA?"
"It's possible he may already know," Donnie suggests. "Or... well, it could be that he doesn’t understand anything other than basic animalistic urges, and wouldn’t comprehend us telling him."
"Wha-huh?" Raph questions as he tilts his head. "Donnie, you gotta use normal words."
Donatello rolls his eyes and sighs in exasperation.
"Mikey might have an animal brain now, not a mutant turtle brain. It is possible he may not understand us."
"He seems to understand just fine," Raph argues.
"So far, but most of our conversations with him haven't required anything of major -- um, I mean, we haven't asked him any BIG questions. Just small ones that are easy. Actually, I don't think we've asked him anything that requires a substantial answer yet..."
"So, Mikey is basically like... what, a pet now?" Raph demands.
"No, I didn't say that --"
"I refuse to accept that!" Raph shouts. "No, Mikey is still in there! I know he is! You didn't see him in the hallway, he understood me, he heard what I said and he responded! Maybe not in words, but he understood me! Mikey isn't some stupid animal, he--"
"Raph!" Leo scolds, pressing a hand against his chest.
Raphael pauses, and immediately looks to Mikey.
For a moment, he's the same old Mikey, sitting in a silly pose on Donnie's desk while he listens to pop music and sketches in his kneepads.
But then the mirage ends, and he's a feral creature crouched on the table, staring wide-eyed and frightened at Raphael, eyes glowing with that all-too familiar red in yellow shine. He wonders how he didn't recognize it before...
Raph is ashamed of himself when he has to look away from Mikey.
It's just those eyes... the same ones that haunt his nightmares every night.
He can't let them haunt his baby brother, too.
"Fine. Let's do whatever needs to be done. And NO ONE says anything about the you-know-what-aliens. Mikey doesn't need to worry about that right now."
The group all silently nod.
Donnie stretches as he gets up from his chair.
"Well, I have a long night of work ahead of me, so if you all please don't mind --"
Donnie shoos everyone away and out of the labs. As soon as the doors open Mikey scurries out, discarding the headphones in the process and dashing in every direction before circling back and landing at Raph's feet with a smile, asking to be picked up so he can climb all over him again.
Raph smiles awkwardly at him, and lifts him gently. Mikey's tail wags, slapping the back of Raph's shell as he perches atop his shoulders like a parrot on a pirate.
"Well, first things first," Leo says with an exhale, "Mikey needs some tending to. Let's get him a bath and see what we can do about those claws and injuries..."
Leo and Raph carry Mikey to the bathroom. He is confused and surprised as he looks around, examining the sink and toilet and tub.
Leo starts the faucet, and the loud spicket and water startle Mikey at first. He creeps towards it, but eventually decides it isn't evil and yells at it, trying to match its volume. Leo snickers at the sight. Mikey somehow hears this, and turns to look at him with a smile.
Leo tries not to let the fangs bother him. Mikey doesn't deserve to be thought of or seen as a monster. Even if he has monster in his blood, now...
After a few minutes, Raph -- who had left to gather some extra towels and soap -- reenters the room. Mikey runs to circle around his feet, curious as to what he has with him. Raph places the items down on top of the counter. Mikey sniffs each one with inquisitiveness.
"Which of these do you like better, big man?" Raph asks, opening two bottles of scented body wash and holding them out for him to smell.
Mikey sniffs both a few times before choosing one scented like citrus and honeysuckle.
Raph smiles as he begins to squirt the soap into the flow of water, bubbles forming under the waves and torrent of churning water.
"And Donnie thought he wouldn't understand us..." he chuckles. "Big brainy dum-dum underestimated you, huh?"
Mikey runs to the edge of the bath and stares, watching with excitement as the bubbles grow bigger and bigger. He points to the steaming water and suds, trying desperately to form words to express his enthusiasm.
"Ah, ah, ah! Ahhh, ha, hah!" he shrieks, a big and bright smile on his face.
Raph chuckles.
"Yeah, bubble baths are pretty fun, huh?"
"Should I go get the camera?" Leo jokes.
Raph rolls his eyes, looking away from Mikey for just a moment. Mikey tries to climb into the hot water before Leo scolds him.
"Ah-bup-bup-bup!" he shouts, causing Mikey to jerk away. "Not yet, bud, that water's too hot..."
Mikey cocks his head to the side in confusion. Too hot??
He looks back down to it. He reaches for the water again.
"Mikey, he said no, it's too hot!" Raph says sternly.
"Still think he understands us?"
Mikey jumps over the side and splashes into the water, smiling happily at the heat. Raph and Leo stare in shock, waiting for the screech of pain as Mikey is boiled alive, but no such cry comes.
"...Maybe it's us that don't understand him," Raph wonders.
Mikey plays in the bath, blowing at the bubbles and throwing them in the air several times, then shrieking with laughter. He throws them at Leo and Raph, who try to dodge the assault but fail.
"Alright, buster, you've asked for it!"
Leo runs to the bath with a pitcher a scoops up a great deal of water, then pours it over Mikey's head. Mikey coughs and sputters at the water.
For a moment, Mikey looks panicked, as if something has triggered him. But the panic subsides quickly, as he looks around the room and understands that he is home again. Mikey splashes Leo back. Leo laughs, and returns the favour. Mikey fills his mouth with bathwater and spits it at Leo, who yells in disgust and calls for Raphael's aid.
It takes far too long for them to actually get Mikey cleaned. The first ten minutes are spent in a war of water and bubbles. The next ten are spent refilling the tub and mopping up the spillage.
Mikey smirks, having of course won the battle, yet relented to let his brothers scrub the grime off his skin and the dried blood from underneath his claws. Raph is a little too rough with him, and Leo keeps getting soap in his eyes, but they are much better at washing him then the others were...
After that, he soaks for several minutes, just calming in the water.
It's quiet, now. Mikey is tired. The water is slow, soft, it envelops him entirely. Leo and Raph are talking about something, discussing what to do or who is in charge of what in the process of taking care of Michelangelo.
Mikey leans his head against the edge of the bath. The steam has long since gone. The bath is getting cooler. Mikey falls asleep...
A sharp pain in his chest.
Mikey's eyes widen.
His arms ache, his legs ache. His hands clench up, he grits his teeth and inhales sharply.
Leo is by his side, almost instantly.
"Mikey? Mikey, what is it?"
"He can't talk, Leo--"
"Well, he has to try! Come on, mi hermano, qué es?"
Mikey starts convulsing, shivering, shaking. His teeth chatter.
Leo takes the hint and places his hand in the water.
"The bath is cold," he says. "Mikey must be sensitive to cold. Let's get him out."
Raph reaches in and pulls Mikey out, his body rigid and unable to move apart from shaking vehemently.
"Do you think this has something to do with why he prefered the bath when it was boiling? The heat didn't seem to faze him at all," Raph mentions.
"He might have some new physical needs," Leo says, grabbing a towel and rubbing Mikey profusely. "I hadn't thought of that..."
Raph signs to Leo.
'Donnie said he had reptile mutations... do you think this is some enhanced form of brumation?'
Leo signs back.
'Not sure... could be? In any case, let's keep him warm and comfortable...'
Mikey starts moaning again, trying to speak.
"Don't worry, buddy, we'll get you nice and warm," Raph assures him.
Mikey starts moving again, his fingers curling and extending.
He holds up his two hands, one with three fingers extended and the other adding a fourth. He taps them against his chin.
"Mikey, what..."
He repeats the motion. Four fingers lined up together, tapping his chin.
A sign for a single word.
'Talk.'
Mikey had found a way to talk.

Just a few quick thoughts on TMAGP
Magnus Protocol is easily the podcast I've been most excited for, and it DOES mostly deliver, making me feel vindicated in my excitement. I look forward to each new episode in a way I rarely do with any ongoing series, be it a podcast or something, and that is really nice. That being said...
I do have a few grievances with it as a whole, honestly. The statements are probably the elephant in the room - I feel like we haven't gotten a single properly scary statement such as the ones from early-to-mid TMA. Not only that, but most statements don't get nearly as intricate and complex as the TMA ones - the ones in TMAGP very much feel just like reports of isolated odd incidents, while TMA felt more like an actual horror anthology where the individual stories eventually start coming together into a coherent larger framework. I think I wouldn't mind either of these things separately, but as things currently stand, I do feel like there hasn't really been anything as memorable as the statements from early TMA yet. I *do* like Bonzo and I also thought the scary movie episode was fun, but... I dunno. I can't help but feel like the statements lack bite overall.
I do actually like the bigger focus on the main cast and their interactions with TMAGP's world, though. I suppose that the weaker statements are partly due to the fact we're getting more screentime for everything else.
I've also been feeling a bit underwhelmed by the post-hiatus episodes' contents - pre-hiatus TMAGP absolutely had a lot of bombshells per episode, so it's quite weird following that up with several episodes where barely anything happens. I do feel like we're kind of waiting for the other shoe to drop, but it's still odd. Maybe I'm just a cranky bitch who doesn't care terribly much about Sam's romantic troubles, who knows? Wish the episodes were juuust a bit longer, honestly.
I think it's very very funny how you can simply tell I'm writing this moments after finishing episode 14 - it really does feel like the current culmination of my issues with the podcast.
All of this in mind, though, I do have to say that I'm still very much hooked and am not likely to fall off anytime soon. The production is insane, the creepy old computer aesthetic rules, and I'm VERY curious to see how this new setting differs from TMA's and what they could even do with a story like this which they didn't already do in TMA. Protocol has so so much promise and I really hope it won't only live up to it, but exceed it. Erm. What else can I say. Alice is endearingly annoying and I like her a lot more than I expected. Gwen is my oomfie. Colin may have not appeared at all within the past few episodes but that is because he is currently very busy with being my boyfriend. Gootbye.

What To Get A 19 Year Old Boy For His Birthday...
Pairing: Platonic! Peter Parker & Reader; Reader x Bucky (but that's not really plot relevant)
Word Count: 2.4k
Warnings: none as usual, you yell at Strange lol
Genre: super fluff
Summary: You happen to be the only person who still remembers Peter Parker exists and you are not about to hang him out to dry. So what happens when you take Peter in and basically become his guardian? Well- nothing is simple where super-teens are involved, but you and Peter can certainly handle whatever comes your way. Right?
***
You from to yourself, feeling like you're forgetting something even though you're just watching TV with Bucky. There's nothing to forget that you can-
"Oh shit-" You gasp sitting up suddenly. Bucky grabs the remote and turns the volume down.
"What?" He frowns shifting to look at you.
"I just realized Peter's birthday's next week and I haven't even thought of what to get him or what to do or-"
"Take a breath y/n. You still have a week." Bucky reminds you with a hand on your shoulder.
"What do I get a nineteen year old boy for his birthday?" You turn to him.
"Why are you asking me?" He blinks.
"You're a guy!"
"I'm a hundred and seven?! I haven't been nineteen in like eighty years, do you really think I would have any idea what a modern teen would want? I can guarantee my interests at nineteen were far different." He scoffs.
"Well what did you want at nineteen?" You ask.
"To avoid another world war?" He shrugs and your mouth drops open.
"I can't fucking stand you." You laugh shoving him lightly.
"Oh come on, how could I resist?!"
"You're so irritating! Be serious." You say fighting giggles.
"Alright, alright, what's the kid interested in?"
"I dunno, comic books, video games, nerdy stuff?" You shrug.
"I've never seen him play video games before." Bucky frowns.
"He plays them on his computer."
"He doesn't have a gaming system of some sort?"
"No?"
"Do you own one?"
"No."
"So get him one of those and a couple of games." Bucky shrugs.
"That's a great idea! And you said you wouldn't know what to get him." You smile.
"I'm sure you could've figured that out."
"You'll come shopping with me won't you? I have no idea what games to get for him honestly."
"How about you take care of the system and I'll worry about the games. Split the cost of this birthday thing."
"What do you mean you're going to worry about the games?" You frown.
"Just trust me. How much is the system anyway?"
"Probably three, maybe four hundred dollars. Depends."
"Sheesh. That's- pricier than I expected honestly." He hums.
"Yeah they can get pretty up there." You shrug.
"Alright then if you buy the system I'll take the kid out and get him an equivalent in games."
"You really wanna spend $600 on his birthday?" You blink.
"I mean he's lost his entire family and he never goes anywhere or talks of friends, we're probably the only people he's going to get gifts from. We can take some of the money from the Stark account." Bucky says. When Tony died there were a couple of accounts set up in your name to take over Avengers related expenses. One to be used for the team's avenging related tasks and one to help the team with personal affects- mostly Thor since he'll likely never have a job here but he's not here that much these days anyway.
"I don't want to get into the habit of using that money, in case of an emergency." You say.
"Baby, you're a witch and I'm a super soldier I can't imagine there will be many emergencies where that money is our only solution. Stark died and we ended up with enough money to change our tax bracket. Six hundred dollars would hardly make a dent and if ever we're in a situation where we do have to use that money for an emergency and we find ourselves $600 short I'm sure neither of us will look back and say 'if only we hadn't given that kid we're responsible for a great birthday gift he loved'." Bucky says.
"Very well, we'll use the Stark account and do it big for him." You say.
"There- now you can stop panicking about his birthday." Bucky pulls you back into his side and turns the volume back up on the TV. You don't point out to Bucky how it seems he's bonded with Peter a bit. At least to some degree since he's suddenly advocating for a big birthday gift for him. You know he'll deny it if you bring it up so you simply smile to yourself at the thought and settle back into his chest. You'll head to the store tomorrow to pick up a console and some birthday supplies.
*~*~*
"Bucky can you grab the candles from the bedroom please baby? They should be in the bag on my desk." You shout while carefully removing the plastic covering from Peter's birthday cake.
"On it!" Bucky calls back from the living room. Moments later, he hands you the opened candles.
"Thank you for opening them." You kiss his cheek and carefully stick the 1 and 9 on the cake without disturbing the Happy Birthday Peter written in blue frosting.
"How long do you think it'll take him to come back?" Bucky asks.
"I only asked him to get some salt, he should be opening the door any minute now." You shrug. "Do you think he suspects anything?"
"Nah, I'll bet when you didn't wish him happy birthday this morning or make anything special for breakfast that he assumed we didn't know or weren't going to make a big deal about it."
"Oh- I hope he's not moping through the streets thinking we forgot." You frown.
"I mean I don't-" Bucky stops suddenly. "He's coming down the hall, light the candles." He tells you. You grab the lighter and quickly light the candles, lifting the cake just as the handle turns.
"Hey. Got the salt you asked for-"
"Happy Birthday Peter!!" You shout when he enters the kitchen.
"Happy birthday kid." Bucky nods.
"You remembered my birthday?"
"Of course I did sweetie! Make a wish." You walk the cake over to him and hold it out for him to blow out the candles. He looks between you and Bucky a couple of times before closing his eyes and blowing out the candles quickly.
"Yay!" You say setting the cake on the counter.
"Thanks guys- I- I kinda thought you'd miss it."
"Nonsense! How could I? Oh and before I forget, your gift." You float the prettily wrapped box from behind the island, into the Peter's hands.
"What is it?"
"You know the point of wrapping a gift is for you to unwrap it in order to find out what's in it." Bucky tells him.
"I know- but I thought maybe you'd tell me anyway." Peter shrugs.
"No way! That ruins the surprise! Open it." You clap excitedly.
"Alright alright." Peter says. He quickly tears off the wrapping paper and his mouth drops open when he fully reveals the box. "You got me an Xbox?" His voice is full of disbelief but you can't say for sure if that's good or not.
"Do you like it?" You ask.
"A-are you kidding?! This is like the best gift I've ever gotten!" Peter says throwing his arms around you. You hug him back relieved that the gift was a success.
"I'm glad! Bucky and I had no idea what to get you." You chuckle.
"You did great." He says.
"This is only the first half of the gift technically. A console needs games, so I'm taking you out to buy some." Bucky adds.
"No way- you don't have to this is already plenty I-I mean these things aren't cheap I don't wanna take advantage of-"
"It's not a question kid, we're going. After lunch." Bucky cuts him off.
"Really? Today?" Peter blinks at him.
"You wanna be able to set that thing up or not?"
"We'll go after lunch." Peter nods. "Are you coming with us y/n?"
"I can't hon I've got some errands to run." You say.
"I hoped we'd all be together for my birthday."
"Don't worry, we'll all be back for dinner together."
"Oh, okay, that's fine then."
He's probably nervous about spending extended time alone with Bucky but you think it'll be good for them to find common ground that's not contingent on you. Obviously, they're capable of coordinating if your anniversary is any indicator. You want to give them the chance to build on that.
In the meanwhile, you have something of equal importance to take care of. You push open the heavy doors to Stephen Strange's lair. He doesn't call it that, and he rather hates it when you do, but that's basically what it is.
"Strange!" You shout.
"Y/n! Hello, to what do I owe this visit?" He asks floating down to meet you. You walk up to him and smack your palm against his forehead. "I guess this isn't a friendly visit then." He hisses rubbing his forehead.
"Not quite." You roll your eyes. A quick succession of hand gestures completes the spell that unlocks Stephen's memories of Peter. He takes a sharp breath as his memories return.
"You know- there are less painful ways do that spell." He says after a moment.
"There are also more painful ways to do that spell be glad I just tapped your forehead." You say.
"Tapped is a bit of an understatement, don't you think?"
"I wanted to beat your ass. Count your blessings I didn't come in here and do that."
"I assume this is about Peter, then?" Stephen sighs.
"Help me with the math here, a 17-year-old comes to you and says 'I want to alter reality' and you don't consider- not doing that?"
"Well hang on I definitely warned him it was a bad idea but he was insistent that it was ruining his life."
"Dude he was 17. A 17 year old will think the world is ending because his best friend moves away before senior year of high school. Granted he's dealt with some pretty intense adult troubles but he's still just a kid and you're like pushing 50 he isn't the responsible party in that situation." You say.
"Watch it, pushing 50 is an exaggeration." Stephen points.
"Not. The point. You altered the very fabric of time and space not once, but twice at the behest of a child."
"It wouldn't have been twice if he hadn't totally screwed up the first one."
"You're the sorcerer not him. It was your spell. Your responsibility." You say.
"Hey he kept adding caveats in the middle of my casting and magic is tricky enough as is without that."
"I know how tricky magic is, which is why I wouldn't have an untrained teenager be part of casting a spell of that magnitude in the first place! It was a bad decision on your part and in the end you got to walk away as if it never even happened. And that might be even more egregious, you completely abandoned the kid after all that chaos."
"Well not completely, I knew the probability of you being unaffected by the spell and thus stepping in was almost 100%."
"Almost 100 isn't 100 and that's still abandoning. The moment you decided to do that spell for him you took on a responsibility." You say.
"So what was I supposed to do? Simply take him in?" He scoffs.
"Well when you take away his entire support system with a spell that is the least you can do Strange."
"He knew the consequences, and it all worked out fine. He's got you now." He shrugs.
"I wonder if you just don't hear yourself speak or if you truly struggle with emotional intelligence so severely." You take a moment to really look at him as if the answer will come to you if you stare at him for long enough. "Whatever, I didn't come here just to yell at you."
"Really? I couldn't have guessed that."
"Today is Peter's birthday. I came to fix your memories so you could send him a birthday card." You say.
"Why would I do that?" He frowns.
"Because your botched spell resulted in the death of his only remaining living relative? We're all he's got."
"Hey I fixed that situation to the best of my ability."
"And it didn't bring his aunt back. It also cost him every relationship he's ever developed. Send him a damn card. Today." You spin around and walk back towards the door. "Be glad I won't drop him on your doorstep. He doesn't deserve that punishment." You scoff, waving the doors open and heading back towards your own apartment to get started on dinner.
"So how did game shopping go?" You ask Bucky and Peter once you're all sat eating dinner.
"Oh we got way more than I would've expected. Mr. Bucky was overly generous I just hope it's clear how greatful I am."
"You've thanked me at least 10 times in the last hour. You've been more than clear kid. It's your birthday so you can stop now."
"I'm glad you had a nice time." You chuckle.
"What did you get up to while we were out baby?" Bucky asks.
"Just some errands nothing interesting." You shrug.
"Nothing interesting?" He raises an eyebrow.
"A little of this a little of that. My to-do list never ends really. Some shopping, I hit the bank, made some visits. You know how it goes."
"I dunno about you but that sounds rather suspicious to me Peter." Bucky turns to him.
"Definitely." Peter nods.
"I clearly made a mistake letting you two spend the afternoon together." You roll your eyes grabbing yours and Peter's now empty plates.
"We will discover your secrets y/n." Bucky warns.
"Good luck with that." You chuckle kissing Bucky's temple before walking the dishes over to the sink.
"Oh no you don't, you cooked, I'll do the dishes." Bucky wraps his hands around your waist and moves you from in front of the sink.
"Fine fine, Petey you want help setting up your Xbox then?" You ask.
"Sure! Is it okay to set it up in my room?"
"Of course it is. It's your thing. Plus if you end up playing all day long I don't want you taking over my living room." You tap his shoulder.
"Cool." He chuckles.
It doesn't take you long to set up the system in his room, it's just a matter of plugging in it and then the rest is for him to do on his own, make an account and such. You're just about to leave his room when a small portal appears in front of him.
"Peter. Happy birthday." Strange says reaching through with a card. You hold back a smile as Peter takes the card with obvious shock on his face.
"T-thanks Mr. Strange." Peter says. Stephen nods and closes the portal without another word.
"I didn't think he remembered me." Peter blinks at you.
"The world works in mysterious was huh." You ruffle Peter's hair. "I'll leave you to get used to your new toy." You add before exiting his room and joining Buckyin the living room.
"Okay, so where did you go today? Really?"
"Honestly I had to go yell at Strange for some magic related things." You say.
"What did he do?"
"It's complicated. Let's just say it'll be a while before I leave our timeline in his hands if ever again." You muse.
"Ah is that why you didn't bring it up at dinner? So the kid doesn't ask about Strange?"
"Yeah basically." You shrug. You're sure Bucky means in terms of Peter not knowing that you're an Avenger or whatever but seeing as you can't explain the real reason you didn't want to talk about it at dinner you see no reason to correct him at the moment. Eventually you'll give him all the details, but today has been good for all of you, you'd like to end on a high.

Not me creeping up to the wordcount of the fourth longest book ever written
#A Reflection of Starlight#AROS#valvert#fanfic#writing#Hey I switched back to LibreOffice again after setting up my new computer#(RIP my old computer's installation of MS Office 2009)#And also my old computer in general as it is now giving me the blue screen of death upon boot#but ANYWAY#does anybody know how to make LibreOffice stop highlighting formatted areas? BC with Dark Mode it's highlighting white text#which makes it impossible to read my footnote and page numbers#Also I CANNOT believe this program was coded to be so that 'Ignore' and 'Ignore All' options only do so for the CURRENT SESSION ONLY#Like what in god's name???#I spent 3-4 hours reformatting AROS after converting it only to learn that all the 'errors' I told it to ignore just popped back#the second I reopened the document like jesus christ#Why even offer those options if it doesn't do it permanently for that document file#HHHHHHHhhhhhhHHHHHH#I then spent another several hours being forced to change the language formatting to French for all the French bits#JUST so it would stop underlining all of them in red#And there's no way for me to get rid of the underlining on things like cut off bits of dialogue#bc they are NOT proper words and I refuse to add them to my Dictionary (thus polluting it) just to get rid of them#Ugh#So anyway remember years ago how I joked about what if I accidentally wrote a fanfic longer than the source material itself#That being one of the longest books ever written (technically THE longest book ever written#if we're counting the FRENCH version of it and not the English translation#And yeah I know I technically split AROS into 3 books but that was only for reader convenience#It's still one book in my heart#And also because I think it would be REALLY funny to surpass Hugo's wordcount#Which is entirely plausible bc in English it was only about 531k so I only a little over 100k off and I think I can easily make that#with the material I have left to write but is already mostly plotted out

last last thing about computers.  sorry hyper-focusing here:
so i mentioned that she might not be familiar with modern-day programming languages, but also consider that people aren’t as familiar anymore with what she’d use, either, and that’s also an advantage

I assure you, an AI didn’t write a terrible “George Carlin” routine
Tumblr media
There are only TWO MORE DAYS left in the Kickstarter for the audiobook of The Bezzle, the sequel to Red Team Blues, narrated by @wilwheaton! You can pre-order the audiobook and ebook, DRM free, as well as the hardcover, signed or unsigned. There's also bundles with Red Team Blues in ebook, audio or paperback.

On Hallowe'en 1974, Ronald Clark O'Bryan murdered his son with poisoned candy. He needed the insurance money, and he knew that Halloween poisonings were rampant, so he figured he'd get away with it. He was wrong:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronald_Clark_O%27Bryan
The stories of Hallowe'en poisonings were just that – stories. No one was poisoning kids on Hallowe'en – except this monstrous murderer, who mistook rampant scare stories for truth and assumed (incorrectly) that his murder would blend in with the crowd.
Last week, the dudes behind the "comedy" podcast Dudesy released a "George Carlin" comedy special that they claimed had been created, holus bolus, by an AI trained on the comedian's routines. This was a lie. After the Carlin estate sued, the dudes admitted that they had written the (remarkably unfunny) "comedy" special:
https://arstechnica.com/ai/2024/01/george-carlins-heirs-sue-comedy-podcast-over-ai-generated-impression/
As I've written, we're nowhere near the point where an AI can do your job, but we're well past the point where your boss can be suckered into firing you and replacing you with a bot that fails at doing your job:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/01/15/passive-income-brainworms/#four-hour-work-week
AI systems can do some remarkable party tricks, but there's a huge difference between producing a plausible sentence and a good one. After the initial rush of astonishment, the stench of botshit becomes unmistakable:
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/jan/03/botshit-generative-ai-imminent-threat-democracy
Some of this botshit comes from people who are sold a bill of goods: they're convinced that they can make a George Carlin special without any human intervention and when the bot fails, they manufacture their own botshit, assuming they must be bad at prompting the AI.
This is an old technology story: I had a friend who was contracted to livestream a Canadian awards show in the earliest days of the web. They booked in multiple ISDN lines from Bell Canada and set up an impressive Mbone encoding station on the wings of the stage. Only one problem: the ISDNs flaked (this was a common problem with ISDNs!). There was no way to livecast the show.
Nevertheless, my friend's boss's ordered him to go on pretending to livestream the show. They made a big deal of it, with all kinds of cool visualizers showing the progress of this futuristic marvel, which the cameras frequently lingered on, accompanied by overheated narration from the show's hosts.
The weirdest part? The next day, my friend – and many others – heard from satisfied viewers who boasted about how amazing it had been to watch this show on their computers, rather than their TVs. Remember: there had been no stream. These people had just assumed that the problem was on their end – that they had failed to correctly install and configure the multiple browser plugins required. Not wanting to admit their technical incompetence, they instead boasted about how great the show had been. It was the Emperor's New Livestream.
Perhaps that's what happened to the Dudesy bros. But there's another possibility: maybe they were captured by their own imaginations. In "Genesis," an essay in the 2007 collection The Creationists, EL Doctorow (no relation) describes how the ancient Babylonians were so poleaxed by the strange wonder of the story they made up about the origin of the universe that they assumed that it must be true. They themselves weren't nearly imaginative enough to have come up with this super-cool tale, so God must have put it in their minds:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/04/29/gedankenexperimentwahn/#high-on-your-own-supply
That seems to have been what happened to the Air Force colonel who falsely claimed that a "rogue AI-powered drone" had spontaneously evolved the strategy of killing its operator as a way of clearing the obstacle to its main objective, which was killing the enemy:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/06/04/ayyyyyy-eyeeeee/
This never happened. It was – in the chagrined colonel's words – a "thought experiment." In other words, this guy – who is the USAF's Chief of AI Test and Operations – was so excited about his own made up story that he forgot it wasn't true and told a whole conference-room full of people that it had actually happened.
Maybe that's what happened with the George Carlinbot 3000: the Dudesy dudes fell in love with their own vision for a fully automated luxury Carlinbot and forgot that they had made it up, so they just cheated, assuming they would eventually be able to make a fully operational Battle Carlinbot.
That's basically the Theranos story: a teenaged "entrepreneur" was convinced that she was just about to produce a seemingly impossible, revolutionary diagnostic machine, so she faked its results, abetted by investors, customers and others who wanted to believe:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theranos
The thing about stories of AI miracles is that they are peddled by both AI's boosters and its critics. For boosters, the value of these tall tales is obvious: if normies can be convinced that AI is capable of performing miracles, they'll invest in it. They'll even integrate it into their product offerings and then quietly hire legions of humans to pick up the botshit it leaves behind. These abettors can be relied upon to keep the defects in these products a secret, because they'll assume that they've committed an operator error. After all, everyone knows that AI can do anything, so if it's not performing for them, the problem must exist between the keyboard and the chair.
But this would only take AI so far. It's one thing to hear implausible stories of AI's triumph from the people invested in it – but what about when AI's critics repeat those stories? If your boss thinks an AI can do your job, and AI critics are all running around with their hair on fire, shouting about the coming AI jobpocalypse, then maybe the AI really can do your job?
https://locusmag.com/2020/07/cory-doctorow-full-employment/
There's a name for this kind of criticism: "criti-hype," coined by Lee Vinsel, who points to many reasons for its persistence, including the fact that it constitutes an "academic business-model":
https://sts-news.medium.com/youre-doing-it-wrong-notes-on-criticism-and-technology-hype-18b08b4307e5
That's four reasons for AI hype:
to win investors and customers;
to cover customers' and users' embarrassment when the AI doesn't perform;
AI dreamers so high on their own supply that they can't tell truth from fantasy;
A business-model for doomsayers who form an unholy alliance with AI companies by parroting their silliest hype in warning form.
But there's a fifth motivation for criti-hype: to simplify otherwise tedious and complex situations. As Jamie Zawinski writes, this is the motivation behind the obvious lie that the "autonomous cars" on the streets of San Francisco have no driver:
https://www.jwz.org/blog/2024/01/driverless-cars-always-have-a-driver/
GM's Cruise division was forced to shutter its SF operations after one of its "self-driving" cars dragged an injured pedestrian for 20 feet:
https://www.wired.com/story/cruise-robotaxi-self-driving-permit-revoked-california/
One of the widely discussed revelations in the wake of the incident was that Cruise employed 1.5 skilled technical remote overseers for every one of its "self-driving" cars. In other words, they had replaced a single low-waged cab driver with 1.5 higher-paid remote operators.
As Zawinski writes, SFPD is well aware that there's a human being (or more than one human being) responsible for every one of these cars – someone who is formally at fault when the cars injure people or damage property. Nevertheless, SFPD and SFMTA maintain that these cars can't be cited for moving violations because "no one is driving them."
But figuring out who which person is responsible for a moving violation is "complicated and annoying to deal with," so the fiction persists.
(Zawinski notes that even when these people are held responsible, they're a "moral crumple zone" for the company that decided to enroll whole cities in nonconsensual murderbot experiments.)
Automation hype has always involved hidden humans. The most famous of these was the "mechanical Turk" hoax: a supposed chess-playing robot that was just a puppet operated by a concealed human operator wedged awkwardly into its carapace.
This pattern repeats itself through the ages. Thomas Jefferson "replaced his slaves" with dumbwaiters – but of course, dumbwaiters don't replace slaves, they hide slaves:
https://www.stuartmcmillen.com/blog/behind-the-dumbwaiter/
The modern Mechanical Turk – a division of Amazon that employs low-waged "clickworkers," many of them overseas – modernizes the dumbwaiter by hiding low-waged workforces behind a veneer of automation. The MTurk is an abstract "cloud" of human intelligence (the tasks MTurks perform are called "HITs," which stands for "Human Intelligence Tasks").
This is such a truism that techies in India joke that "AI" stands for "absent Indians." Or, to use Jathan Sadowski's wonderful term: "Potemkin AI":
https://reallifemag.com/potemkin-ai/
This Potemkin AI is everywhere you look. When Tesla unveiled its humanoid robot Optimus, they made a big flashy show of it, promising a $20,000 automaton was just on the horizon. They failed to mention that Optimus was just a person in a robot suit:
https://www.siliconrepublic.com/machines/elon-musk-tesla-robot-optimus-ai
Likewise with the famous demo of a "full self-driving" Tesla, which turned out to be a canned fake:
https://www.reuters.com/technology/tesla-video-promoting-self-driving-was-staged-engineer-testifies-2023-01-17/
The most shocking and terrifying and enraging AI demos keep turning out to be "Just A Guy" (in Molly White's excellent parlance):
https://twitter.com/molly0xFFF/status/1751670561606971895
And yet, we keep falling for it. It's no wonder, really: criti-hype rewards so many different people in so many different ways that it truly offers something for everyone.

PEACHES - gojo satoru x f!reader.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
→ summary: working was always boring for Gojo Satoru, just some boring paperwork, unread emails, and meetings every-day. but his new assistant made his world turn around and make it as sweet as peaches.
→ warnings: smut, unprotected sex, dacryphilia, possesive behavior, teasing, breeding kink, use of nicknames (sweetheart, love, baby....), fluff, playboy!gojo, got the idea and wrote this watching the office, not proof read, office!au, boss!gojo satoru, assistant!reader.
TUMBLR IS BASED ON A REBLOG SYSTEM. PLEASE REBLOG MY WORK. THANK YOU. ENJOY. SMUT BELOW THE CUT.
New day at the office, a new chance to annoy Nanami.
That's what Gojo Satoru would tell himself everytime he has to go to work. Nothing interesting usually happens there, same old office, boring paper work, and employees to annoy.
Because he wouldn't be working on this office if he wasn't obviously the boss.
Recently he fired the old assistant, some boring and old lady which couldn't even pass the call to him. A 'gift' from the old boss. But guess what? He's the new boss right now.
Your curriculum seemed pretty nice, a young lady, with not much experience which that's a job for him to build, single, not that it matters, and today, actually was your first day.
The office seemed pretty nice, clean, minimal, and the people seemed... nice.
Your desk was pretty long, a computer in the middle of it, some folders, which you suppose is the paper work left undone, office phone and some paper with the numbers to use when sending the call to your new work-mates.
After introducing yourself to everyone, you took a sit. You didn't quite well knew what to do, until the main door opened up, and you saw his black small circular eyes, a small glimpse of really blue eyes, his hair white as snow, he seemed like a really young man, probably two-three years older than you.
¨Oh, nice, you're already here. I'm Gojo Satoru, your new boss.¨
Your legs suddenly reacted and made you stand up from your chair, not even realizing you're now standing infront of him, his presence making you feel small, not only because of his height and broad shoulders, he had this aura of dominance, of a leader. No wonder why he's the boss.
You bowed at him and said your name, trying your best to not seem nervous or like your feeling your voice will crack at any moment. ¨Nice meeting you Mr.Gojo, i'll try my best, i'm sure you'll not be disappointed by choosing me!¨ Half of it you said it on your bow, really fast. Which made Satoru laugh.
¨Satoru love, call me Satoru. I'm pretty sure we're almost the same age, i'm pretty young to be called mister by such a pretty young lady like you for my taste.¨
You nervously giggled, and bowed again, feeling your face hot from embarrassment all you could do was look at the floor and wait for your first work to do.
And to say your boss wouldn't make you work, is a lie.
For the first hour or so, things went pretty fast and rough. You took notes, answered emails, and organized his schedule, all while trying not to make any mistakes. Someway the emails wouldn't stop coming, notes which you were pretty sure were his, but you couldn't dispute your new boss on your first day.
But as the day went on, you couldn't help but notice the way Satoru kept stealing glances at you. At first, you assumed it was just your imagination, but when days started passing, small glances turned into keeping eye contact with a shy smile with him, weeks passed and flirty comments started flying around the two of you, inside jokes, coffees by the morning after knowing his usual take, small accidental touches into giggles and shy apologies.
And to be honest, Satoru put you through so much work not only because he's lazy to do it by himself, but because he loves seeing you running around the office with your small skirts, he loves seeing you flustered by his compliments, loves having your submission.
Two months passed and he started inviting you to dinner after work, maybe some coffee on the weekends here and there, but he was falling for you. You might fell for him first, but he fell harder. But he couldn't let himself admit that.
Something that makes Gojo Satoru the Gojo Satoru is that he's a fucking playboy, can't stay with a girl for more than two weeks, it gets two the point where Nanami and Suguru bet on how much time the new chick will last. But... they didn't know about you! and the secret little dates he took you on, and the little pecks you have him on the cheek that made his heart beat faster and his trousers tighter.
He tried, really tried to forget those silly feelings you put him through, going to bars and finding a new fuck every night, but he knew he had to have you the moment he moaned your name while coming in a random girl mouth.
So that was enough playing around.
But he couldn't just go to your desk, and fuck you there in front of everyone. Which... didn't sound too bad when he's now thinking about it, maybe someday he'll try it with you, but first he had to have you in the nice way.
Leaving roses on your desk every-morning was a cute detail, but he thinks it wasn't enough, why? well because they still seem like doubting about if he's interested in yo or not.
¨Satoru, are you sure you're not in denial?...¨ Suguru asked him, knowing his best-friend like his right hand.
¨I'm not in denial Geto.¨ When Satoru uses his last-name instead of his first name like normal friends do, he knows he's lying, a good way to tell, but not like he's going to tell him.
¨So... I guess you wouldn't mind if I ask her out on a date right?¨
¨Fuck off Suguru.¨
His fantasies about you turned from sweet dreams into waking up at 3 A.M with wet boxers and in need of a jack off. So, now, he had enough.
You were nervous, to say at least. Today all Satoru did was treating you with coldness. Did you do something wrongs? His coffee wasn't sweet enough? And you were even more nervous when at the end of the day he called you to his office and stay for a while.
¨Yes Mr.Gojo?¨
He laughed, ¨How many times have I told you to just call me Satoru sweetheart?¨ he tooks his glasses off, it wasn't the first time you saw him without them, but every-time you looked at those eyes again, it felt like the first time.
¨I'm sorry Mr-... Satoru... Is everything okay? Why am I here?¨
He took a step closer, someway you stayed in your place, slow breathing each step he got closer the more you were anticipating his next move. ¨You don't really see it sweetheart, don't you?¨
¨See wh- mmph~!¨ the rule was broken with the moment of realization there was no coming back after this, had this kiss become even more frantic. You felt giddy kissing Satoru and his sweet lips, this moment was like a dream.
His armed wrapped around your waist, and your naturally wrapped around his neck, his hands went lower and lower until he smacked your ass which made you moaned at the sensation. Your hands sliding down his chest.
You giggled at the sudden action. "I was going to say it hurt, but I actually liked it." which made Satoru's grin even bigger, his cock was hurting by this moment, so many nights thinking about you and he is finally in the moment.
His hands stayed on your arms, kisses now turning into bruises in your neck, moans in to whines. "I want to kiss every inch of you." He mumbled on your neck, while grabbing your thighs and carrying you to sit on his desk.
Unbuttoning your shirt, while maintaining eye contact, his hands caressing every inch of your exposed body, he took your bra off and started sucking on one of your nipples, using his other hand to tease the other, by pinching it with his index and thumb. Switching to the other nipple, making sure both of them would be purple by tomorrow.
His hand sliding down until he got into your thighs, making it's way down your skirt, using his fingers to feel the wetness on your panties, "Look at that. Wet for me already and I've barely done anything." you could hear the sound of him unbuckling his pants, while he was getting naked, you made sure to take off the remaining pieces of yours.
His cock was large. A pretty shade of pink, veins coming down from the tip to his base. Red and needy tip already leaking pre-cum, looking for attention. He positioned himself, sliding his cock up and down between your lips thanks to your wetness. Each time touching your needy clit, making you moan. ¨S...Satoru... stop teasing! a-ah!~¨
“I can’t help myself, you’re just too fun to tease~” You moaned at the sudden intrusion, a small feeling of pain came through your body while adapting to his size. ¨Too.. big 'toru- just too much...¨
He chuckled at how cute you looked trying to fit him. Your tight hole squeezing his cock had him rolling his eyes. ¨You can take it baby, 'm sure you can.¨ He gave you a small peck on your lips, before slowly thrusthing.
¨You f...feel soooo good' sweetheart. Made for me. This pussy was made for me.¨ His thrusts started becoming faster every-time you moaned even louder, tears started filling your eyes, coming down one by one.
¨Make me. nngh! make me yours 'toru.¨
¨You want it princess?, you want my babies? Make you a such and good mommy?¨ Your moans started becoming erratic, way too much for your body. His hands would be buried on your hips by tomorrow.
You felt yourself getting dizzier every-time he hit that spot that made you see stars. ¨You would be such a pretty mommy, all round and full of me. I'll make sure you get pregnant, fucking you everyday...¨
You couldn't take it anymore, his dirty talk made you cum like no other. But he didn't stop, it made him eager to fuck you more. One of his hands positioned in your neck, choking you the right way to make you giddy.
His groans and whines searching for release made you looking for it too. The overstimulation becoming so much for your body. With some more thrusts both of you came at the same time. Satoru stayed a while inside of you, trying to steadying his breathing. He cleaned the both of you with a tissue and dressed you up again. He hugged your exhausted body, kissing your neck and praying how perfect you were.
¨Satoru...?¨
¨Yes sweetheart?¨
¨I get it. And I love you too.¨

How to Buy a Computer for Cheaper
Buy refurbished. And I'm going to show you how, and, in general, how to buy a better computer than you currently have. I'm fairly tech-knowledgeable, but not an expert. But this is how I've bought my last three computers for personal use and business (graphics). I'm writing this for people who barely know computers. If you have a techie friend or family member, having them help can do a lot for the stress of buying a new computer.
There are three numbers you want to know from your current computer: hard drive size, RAM, and processor speed (slightly less important, unless you're doing gaming or 3d rendering or something else like that)
We're going to assume you use Windows, because if you use Apple I can't help, sorry.
First is hard drive. This is how much space you have to put files. This is in bytes. These days all hard drives are in gigabytes or terabytes (1000 gigabytes = 1 terabyte). To get your hard drive size, open Windows Explorer, go to This PC (or My Computer if you have a really old OS).
Tumblr media
To get more details, you can right-click on the drive. and open Properties. But now you know your hard drive size, 237 GB in this case. (this is rather small, but that's okay for this laptop). If you're planning on storing a lot of videos, big photos, have a lot of applications, etc, you want MINIMUM 500 GB. You can always have external drives as well.
While you've got this open, right-click on This PC (or My Computer). This'll give you a lot of information that can be useful if you're trying to get tech support.
Tumblr media
I've underlined in red the two key things. Processor: it can help to know the whole bit (or at least the Intel i# bit) just so you don't buy one that's a bunch older, but processor models are confusing and beyond me. The absolutely important bit is the speed, in gigahertz (GHz). Bigger is faster. The processor speed is how fast your computer can run. In this case the processor is 2.60 GHz, which is just fine for most things.
The other bit is RAM. This is "random-access memory" aka memory, which is easy to confuse for, like how much space you have. No. RAM is basically how fast your computer can open stuff. This laptop has 16 GB RAM. Make sure you note that this is the RAM, because it and the hard drive use the same units.
If you're mostly writing, use spreadsheets, watching streaming, or doing light graphics work 16 GB is fine. If you have a lot of things open at a time or gaming or doing 3d modeling or digital art, get at least 32 GB or it's gonna lag a lot.
In general, if you find your current laptop slow, you want a new one with more RAM and a processor that's at least slightly faster. If you're getting a new computer to use new software, look at the system requirements and exceed them.
I'll show you an example of that. Let's say I wanted to start doing digital art on this computer, using ClipStudio Paint. Generally the easiest way to find the requirements is to search for 'program name system' in your search engine of choice. You can click around their website if you want, but just searching is a lot faster.
That gives me this page
Tumblr media
(Clip Studio does not have very heavy requirements).
Under Computer Specs it tells you the processor types and your RAM requirements. You're basically going to be good for the processor, no matter what. That 2 GB minimum of memory is, again, the RAM.
Storage space is how much space on your hard drive it needs.
Actually for comparison, let's look at the current Photoshop requirements.
Tumblr media
Photoshop wants LOTS of speed and space, greedy bastard that it is. (The Graphics card bit is somewhat beyond my expertise, sorry)
But now you have your three numbers: hard drive space, RAM (memory) and processor (CPU). Now we're going to find a computer that's better and cheaper than buying new!
We're going to buy ~refurbished~
A refurbished computer is one that was used and then returned and fixed up to sell again. It may have wear on the keyboard or case, but everything inside (aside from the battery) should be like new. (The battery may hold less charge.) A good dealer will note condition. And refurbished means any flaws in the hardware will be fixed. They have gone through individual quality control that new products don't usually.
I've bought four computers refurbished and only had one dud (Windows kept crashing during set-up). The dud has been returned and we're waiting for the new one.
You can buy refurbished computers from the manufacturers (Lenovo, Dell, Apple, etc) or from online computer stores (Best Buy and my favorite Newegg). You want to buy from a reputable store because they'll have warranties offered and a good return policy.
I'm going to show you how to find a refurbished computer on Newegg.
You're going to go to Newegg.com, you're gonna go to computer systems in their menu, and you're gonna find refurbished
Tumblr media
Then, down the side there's a ton of checkboxes where you can select your specifications. If there's a brand you prefer, select that (I like Lenovos A LOT - they last a long time and have very few problems, in my experience. Yes, this is a recommendation).
Put in your memory (RAM), put in your hard drive, put in your CPU speed (processor), and any other preferences like monitor size or which version of Windows you want (I don't want Windows 11 any time soon). I generally just do RAM and hard drive and manually check the CPU, but that's a personal preference. Then hit apply and it'll filter down.
I'm going to say right now, if you are getting a laptop and you can afford to get a SSD, do it. SSD is a solid-state drive, vs a normal hard drive (HDD, hard disk-drive). They're less prone to breaking down and they're faster. But they're also more expensive.
Anyway, we have our filtered list of possible laptops. Now what?
Well, now comes the annoying part. Every model of computer can be different - it can have a better or worse display, it can have a crappy keyboard, or whatever. So you find a computer that looks okay, and you then look for reviews.
Here's our first row of results
Tumblr media
Let's take a look at the Lenovo, because I like Lenovos and I loathe Dells (they're... fine...). That Thinkpad T460S is the part to Google (search for 'Lenovo Thinkpad T460s reviews'). Good websites that I trust include PCMag, LaptopMag.com, and Notebookcheck.com (which is VERY techie about displays). But every reviewer will probably be getting one with different specs than the thing you're looking at.
Here are key things that will be the same across all of them: keyboard (is it comfortable, etc), battery life, how good is the trackpad/nub mouse (nub mice are immensely superior to trackpads imho), weight, how many and what kind of ports does it have (for USB, an external monitor, etc). Monitors can vary depending on the specs, so you'll have to compare those. Mostly you're making sure it doesn't completely suck.
Let's go back to Newegg and look at the specs of that Lenovo. Newegg makes it easy, with tabs for whatever the seller wants to say, the specs, reviews, and Q&A (which is usually empty).
Tumblr media
This is the start of the specs. This is actually a lesser model than the laptop we were getting the specs for. It's okay. What I don't like is that the seller gives very little other info, for example on condition. Here's a Dell with much better information - condition and warranty info.
Tumblr media
One thing you'll want to do on Newegg is check the seller's reviews. Like on eBay or Etsy, you have to use some judgement. If you worry about that, going to the manufacturer's online outlet in a safer bet, but you won't quite get as good of deals. But they're still pretty damn good as this random computer on Lenovo's outlet shows.
Tumblr media
Okay, so I think I've covered everything. I do recommend having a techie friend either help or double check things if you're not especially techie. But this can save you hundreds of dollars or allow you to get a better computer than you were thinking.

It's my birthday. So I wanted to ask for one of those NSFW imagines that you do...
Steve Rogers surprising y/n on his birthday (the newest member of the team) by letting him eat his cake (his ass).
Y/N's birthday wish had come true about six weeks before his actual birthday was due. It was like something out of a movie where the main character lands their dream job, or in Y/N's case, his dream team.
Ever since the Avengers first appeared together to save the world, Y/N wanted to be a part of the team. He studied hard in school, played sports, and even the occasional computer classes, but what got him the job was the powers he developed. The power to control the very weather all at his fingertips. Nick Fury was impressed, and after a trial run, Y/N was officially the newest member of the Avengers.
Everyone was welcoming. Sure, Tony liked to pick on Y/N because he was the rookie of the team, Steve, aka Captain America, always had his back. Y/N couldn't help but fall for the Captain. He was so nice and kind. He showed Y/N the ropes on missions, and he never lost his patience with Y/N. Even when the situation called for it.
Y/N and Steve were an inseparable team after the first few weeks. Steve would teach Y/N everything he knew from battle techniques to planning and strategizing. In return, Y/N had shown Steve how to work a phone and the internet. What memes were and social media. That's probably how Steve found out it was Y/N's birthday.
The young Avenger didn't want to make a spectacle of his birthday, so he didn't bother telling anyone about it. Y/N figured he could spend a quiet Friday night alone with some Netflix. He was wrong.
Y/N enters his room to find Steve waiting for him on his bed with a small smirk on his face. He wore a blue bathroom and fuzzy red slippers. This was so different from the "old man clothes" as Tony liked to call them that Steve usually wore. His blue eyes were shining with a hidden mischief. "Hey, Y/N."
"Hey, Cap. What's up? How did you get into my room?"
"J.A.R.V.I.S. let me in. Hope that's fine with you?"
"Of course. Did you need something?" Y/N asked, eyebrows raised at Steve's attire.
Steve stood up and walked towards him. Y/N frowns and gulps as Steve gets closer until he can see the flecks of black in baby blue eyes. His lips are pink and plump. So full and shining with some sort of coat. Probably, lip bomb. "It occurred to me that today was your birthday today, and you didn't tell anyone. Why?" Steve looks at Y/N.
Y/N blushed and rubbed the back of his neck nervously. "I didn't want to make a big deal about it."
"You should. We're a team now. We celebrate everyone's birthday together. But we can tell the others tomorrow. For now, I have a cake for you." Steve smiled, but he was also blushing very hard, which made him look even more adorable and innocent than he usually did.
"You baked me a cake? You didn't have to do that."
"It's a different kind of cake. And I need you to frost it for me. I can't reach back there."
Before Y/N could ask what that meant, Steve dropped his robe and revealed he was wearing a patriotic thong. Captain America turned around, and the floss of the fabric was so tight around Steve bare ass crack and made his white boy cheeks even bigger than they were and believe Y/N, he's seen Steve in his suit. He knew those glutes would be big.
"Steve, what are you doing?" Y/N blushed, but he couldn’t deny he's actually fantasized Steve doing this just for him. Showing him America's ass.
"I told you. I want you to frost my cake with your tongue. Maybe you'll give me your frosting?" Steve pulled the thong to the side of his cheeks and exposed his pinkish hole. It winked at him. "Please, Y/N?"
Y/N looks shocked. Was Steve really giving him his ass for his birthday? He must be dreaming, right? He pinched himself. He wasn't. This was real, and so was Steve. Steve wanted it. The pinnacle of American dreams was right in front of him, shaking his tight ass.
The young Avenger walked towards Steve and bent him forward against the bed as Y/N spread those golden boy ass cheeks and began to lick Captain America's ass like a dying man.

must be a kind of blind love
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(older!modern!eddie - interlude blurbie) orange colored sky setlist
a/n: wrote this little older!eddie blurbie in honor of me needing glasses. my birthday is tomorrow so consider this an early present from me. this doesn't have to fit in order of any time line, it's just cute and fluffy. however, there are some exciting revelations in here.
tw: references to smut, foul language, otherwise pretty tame. idiots in love.
Tumblr media
"Yyyyell-o." "You gotta stop answering the phone like that, Ed."
"It's how I always answer the phone, baby -- it's like a muscle memory."
"Ooh, muscle memory, big word for you," you chuckle, you can hear him click clacking against his keyboard on the other end, "You busy?"
"Not too busy, you okay?" he asks, the click clacking slows down to a stop, you hear the roll of his desk chair and some shuffling, the sound of an iPhone being unplugged from his computer.
"So um, I just left the doctors..."
"Okay before you finish what you're saying, I need you to never start a phone call with 'I just left the doctors...' fours days after we had sex," he interrupts, "We clear on that?"
You laugh, it's hearty and bubbly, enough to calm him from the heart racing 'what ifs' running through his head, "Yes, we're clear -- but you knew I had this doctor's appointment!"
"I know, but still -- how'd it go? Everything good?"
"Well..." you start, "It was an eye doctor appointment, like, an optometrist."
"I know what an optomestrist is, baby girl," he says sweetly, "But thank you for clarifying."
"Anyway I went and got my eyes check and uh..." you trail off, not wanting to say it. You can hear the low giggle coming from his throat, practically see the smile in his next sentence.
"Aw, you need glasses, don't you, peach?" he smirks into his question, heading down the metal staircase into the kitchen to refill his coffee cup.
"Yeah," you say poutily, "And now my eyes hurt cause they did dialysis on my eyes I mean -- dialated my eyes, whoops."
"I would hope they didn't perform dialysis on your eyes, jesus," he still can't hold back his gruff giggle, "Is it bad? What's your perscription?"
"I think it's honestly just an astigmatism? But better safe than sorry," you explain, "Don't make fun of me."
"Oh baby, I'm gonna make fun of you," Eddie pops the mug into the microwave, "Now you know how I feel every time you tell me to put my glasses on. Not fun gettin' old, is it?"
"You make it look pretty fun," you shrug, walking over to the train. The printed out paper with your perscription on it is blinding outside, the white glaring into your dilated pupils, "Fuck that's bright."
"I'm almost done with work for today, you wanna just come to mine?" he asks, "We can go look for frames for you."
"You're gonna be mean," you complain, "I don't like when you're mean."
"I won't be mean, I promise."
"Do you want me to come over?" you ask.
He bites his tongue, wanting to reply with a snappy 'Would I have invited you if I didn't?' but he can tell you just need the reassurance.
"I'd love to see you," his voice warm honey while it drips into the receiver, "Of course I want you to come over. You getting on the train?"
"Yeah I'm like, maybe twenty minutes way," you smile.
"Well then I'll see you in twenty, okay?" "Okay."
Tumblr media
He spends the first couple minutes teasing you when you get in to get it out of his system, peppering you with kisses when your fake pout gets too cute for him. Eddie gives you his glasses to try on but you squint.
"These are too blurry," you shake your head, scrunching your nose in a way that has him melting.
"Well that's cause my visions a little worse than yours," he shrugs, plucking them off your face by the bridge and popping them onto his own.
"I think your glasses are nice," you shrug, "They make you look handsome."
"Handsome, huh?" he quirks a brow, "I think they make me look like my uncle. He's like, 74."
"You don't look 74," you roll your eyes.
"No?"
"No, babe," you say sweetly, tilting your head when you look at him, "You look at least 72."
He clicks his tongue and puffs out a breath, "How did I know?"
"You love it," you smirk, kissing his cheek and then the tip of his nose.
"Yeah, yeah, I love it," he nods along, tilting his head up to kiss your lips. He pulls you in close to him, taking a seat on one of the barstools at the kitchen island where you stand between his thighs.
Yeah, yeah, I love it. I love you. I think I love you.
"When your eyes feel a little less blurry you wanna look for some frames?" he asks, noses touching. You nod, feeling safe in his hold, eyes fluttering closed when he kisses your cheek. Eddie's full lips kiss from your cheek to your jaw, to the top of your neck -- implying all the ideas he has in mind to pass the time.
"We can fool around if you want," he asks against your skin, "That sound good to you, four eyes?"
You groan into a laugh, shoving him lightly off you, "Fuck you."
Laughing in the kitchen together is his new favorite past time.
Tumblr media
Cat-eye, round, square, wire-rimmed, low brow -- there's too many options. You chew on your lower lip looking at the walls of frames, trying to not get in the way of other people while they grab pairs to try on in the brightly lit mirrors.
"Where do I even start?" you ask yourself, feeling Eddie close behind you. His hand presses against your mid back, leading you over to a wall that doesn't have people crowded around it. It gives you a moment to breathe, he rubs your shoulder as it relaxes.
"What types of sunglasses to you normally wear?" he asks, "That's a good place to start."
You had a few fake pairs of Raybans, a couple cat-eye frames from when you were in your early twenties. One pair of rimless glasses from a 90s party that you don't totally hate. You reach for the Wayferer shaped ones, wire rim bottom and flat top -- you find it accentuates your brows in a way that isn't quite right. They sit uneven on your face.
"These are awful," you mumble, taking them off.
"No they're not," he assures. He grabs a few pairs that are sort of ridiculous just to get you laughing -- big wild pairs with bright colors, a pair of transition lens aviators that look straight out of a serial killer movie, exaggerated cat eye lenses that he said his great aunt would've worn in the 80s. He heals every tease with a gentle kiss to your temple or forehead just over the bridge of your nose.
Eventually he starts looking at sunglasses for himself while you gain the confidence to go for it on your own. It's not lost on him when some of the ladies who work there come over to see if he needs help that they're flirting, and to be fair, he's never one to not indulge. You catch his eye in an opposite mirror where he gives you a wink -- he blushes when you roll your eyes in return.
You finally think you've settled on a pair you like, one that surprises you. Thin wire rimmed, brushed gold, they sit slightly round over your face, dipping a bit onto the tops of your cheeks. They don't accentuate whatever is happening with your brow line, they almost feel like they're supposed to be there. Your next thought sounds like your mom in your ear -- They go with everything!
You push your hair back, seeing if you'll still like them with your hair out of the way and down again. You snap a picture -- well, you snap a few. You don't hate it.
"Hey," you call out, tapping on his shoulder when you get behind him, "What do you think?"
Eddie turns, smoothly taking off the new sunglasses he was considering, "Lemme see."
"Oh honey," he coos, "Oh my god you look like a sweet little secretary."
"Stop," you laugh, heat hitting your cheeks at his praise. "Gotta get you a type writer so you can come work for me," he eggs on playfully, "You can screen all my calls. Maybe earn some over time..."
"Don't be annoying," you chide, slapping at his arm when he snakes it around you.
"No, peach you look so sweet," he gushes, "Really."
"I don't look like a nerd?" you ask, looking into the mirror again.
"Of course you do," he confirms, "But that's what I like about them. Plus, they go with everything."
"We'll be like twins," you say with a nudge, "Yours are sort of like this but silver."
"You're right," he nods, "Look at that, nerds in love."
He gives you a quick kiss -- but both of your hearts sink when the weight of what he says hits both your ears. Nerds in love.
In love.
In love.
You hear him swallow and you do the same. There's a jitter to both of you after, like both of you are pretending to not have heard that sentence. Like it didn't happen.
"So you like these ones?" he asks, voice cracking like a teenager. He clears his throat before flagging over one of the women who offered to help him before, "Can we uh, can we get these set up with her prescription?"
The woman's smile is dazzling, perfect for retail -- you'd buy anything she told you to buy. She takes the pair in your hand and goes to work, calling you both over to the iPads by the check out desk to get the order in. Your heart hammers while you make your way over.
"Ed, I don't even know how much those cost," you say under your breath.
"It doesn't matter," he mumbles back, "You're not paying for 'em."
"Ed," you protest, "No." You shake your head, the serious look on your face makes his chest hot with embarrassment.
But he's quick, he's a loverboy for a reason, "Just think of it as insurance for all the jokes I get to make at your expense. I'm earning my right to bully you by buying them."
"You're so dumb," you huff, taking his hand while he reaches out to you to place your order.
"You love it."
"Yeah, yeah, I love it."
I love it, you think, I think I love you.

*Whoops. Forgot to title and link previous chapters. Fight me, I just woke up.
A King in Arkham
Chapter 3
Chapter 1 Chapter 2
"Tim. Tim you have to get me copies of this footage." Tim is not surprised by the request. In fact, the 'Sure' is already on his tongue when he pauses, a thought creeping into his head, seeded by the notification Tim really hopes Jason isn't paying attention to in the bottom corner of the computer.
"One condition."
"Fuck you, I knew you'd want something. What? You want my cookies? Coffee? For Red Hood to go on camera singing praises for Red Robin? I'll fuckin do it. Just send me the god damn clips."
"Nope, nope, and tempting, but no."
"Name your price, Replacement. I'll pay it."
"Swear you aren't going to go rush in and extract the kid until we're done investigating him."
"What!? Fuck that! I told you was pulling him out next chance I get!" Tim lets himself groan in annoyance.
"Look, anyone that could do that-" Tim gestures to the part of the screen where they'd pulled up The Joker's medical reports following the incidents, showing pictures and descriptions of just how thoroughly Daniel had beat his ass 3 weeks in a row, "without getting so much as a scratch or fucking bruise in return, has got something going on. There may well be a reason they sent him to Arkham!"
Jason's eyes narrow at Tim as he all but growls, "No reason is good enough to put-"
"A fifteen year old in Arkham. I fucking know that, Hood. But we still need to know exactly who we're dealing with when we get him out. What his deal is. If his dangerous. What the hell was so wrong with him that someone thought it was a good idea to stick him in there to begin with."
"He could get hurt while we're sitting on our asses trying to satisfy fuckin Bat paranoia!"
"He took down the Joker! Clearly he can take care of himself."
"Then who has been hurting him!?"
"Maybe him fucking self!" Tim knew he was pushing it. The green growing stronger in Jason's eyes was proof. But he needed to buy them some time before Jason made thing exponentially harder by storming the castle. Still, now he needed to calm Jason down before he went into a full rage. So Tim held up his hands placatingly.
"A few days, Jay. Just give us a few more days. I'm already almost through the Arkham reports, and there are only a handful from Chicago and Oracle is probably going to announce any minute now that she got through the communications blackout around his home town. We just need a bit more time to sort out intel so that we actually know how to help him once we get him out."
Finally, after a tense 34 seconds, green fades back into blue and Jason let's out a heavy sigh.
"Fine. But I get to tell the Bat about Daniel's discipline slips. Wanna see his fuckin face when I do."
"Deal." Tim hurriedly puts a comm in as Jason watches with narrowed eyes.
Batman.
Red Robin. Ready to fill me in?
Not yet, you're about to be busy. I isolated a pattern earlier. Exactly 15 minutes before the locks malfunction, there's been a strange power surge. Always written off. But the surge doesn't seem to be coming from the grid. And like I said, exactly 15 minutes later is when the locks malfunction.
Jason huffs as he catches on. Apparently he hadn't thought to question why Tim was so desperate to buy time before.
Robin responds, since he's on stakeout with Bruce. Mostly because Bruce won't let him watch the asylum alone. Much as the kid hates it, the rest of the family agrees. It's only a matter of time before someone in max security manages to take advantage of theses malfunctions. So far Croc is the only one who had, though thankfully he's not one to start shit on his own. But with Joker, Scarecrow, and TwoFace all inside; any one of them, or god forbid all three, could make for a real bad situation.
Tt. So you can tell before a malfunction happens.
Think so. Last power surge was 8 minutes ago.
And you are only telling us now, why Drake?
Codenames.
Cause he spent those 8 convincing me not to go get our kid out yet.
6 minutes. See if you can stop things before they start.
I'm not far out. Want me to join you?
Tt. I doubt we'll need your assistance, Signal. We shall be done before you get here.
No wait. Signal, head in. See if you can get a read on 26B.
You think he might be meta?
Hood?
Jason glares at Tim betrayed.
"I wanted to see his fuckin face."
Tim just waves him off.
"They need to know. You tell them or I do."
Boys
Jason scowls, but relents.
He put the Joker in the infirmary on his 1st, 7th, and 15th days there. All 3 times took no damage himself. Feral child had to be pulled off and still didn't stop struggling till the clown was out of sight.
All 3 assaults followed by panic attacks, though whether about the Joker himself or what Daniel had done to him, we don't know yet.
The comms were silent for a moment.
A 15 year old...
Did what you've never had the balls to old man.
...I've fought the Joker.
Daniel hits first.
Hnn
I will admit, it is impressive that he can take the Joker down alone. Perhaps he will make for a worthy brother after all.
4 minutes.
We're moving in. Thank you Red Robin, Hood.
The fuck are you thanking me for?
For helping. And giving us time to work this out.
ETA 7 minutes out. Be with you shortly.
.
The advanced warning proved invaluable for Batman and Robin. After alerting the chief of security of their supposed pattern, he had guards already in motion when the doors swung open. Batman took a perch to watch for max security escapees while Robin assisted the guards in keeping inmates corralled. Many didn't even bother to leave their designated areas, having already seen the Bats in the building.
No sign of any max security inmates. Normally, Batman would find this concerning. And while he did file it away to ponder later why no one from max security ever seemed to make it out of that wing, for today he counted the blessing that he would not have to try to keep Robin safe while dealing with someone like the Joker.
Batman tracked motion through the crowds, watching as a black mop of hair moved, seemingly otherwise unnoticed, through the sea of people. He thought to move in to direct the person back towards where people were being herded to, but the small figure merely walked towards the B wing and entered one of the far cells. That gave Bruce a sneaking suspicion of which patient that was. He moved to get a closer look as Signal swooped in.
"Where is he?"
"I believe he just went into his cell. This way." Batman led Signal to the cell he'd seen that tiny person enter. It was indeed 26B and there was indeed a small, too small, frail looking boy lying on the bed there. A red blotch had appeared under his left eye even though Bruce was certain there had been no injury there as the boy had crossed the hall.
Signal froze beside him, breath stuttering. The boy briefly glanced at them through the corner of his eye, mouth twitching into a brief frown. Then his eyes turned back to the ceiling and his face smoothed out. Bruce couldn't help but reach out.
"Hello." The boy said nothing. Signal opened and closed his mouth, seeming to try to say something, but unable to get words out. Batman wondered what he must be seeing. "You seem hurt. Do you need help?" Eyes flickered back to him and away just as quickly.
"Nothing you can help with Mr. Batman." And oh, how Bruce hated the kid's voice. So quiet and so so hollow. Bruce's mind flashed to his children, imagining any them speaking with such emptiness. His heart clenched, wondering what could have happened to this boy to have snuffed the life out of him so young.
Duke found his voice again, just as the doors buzzed and swung shut again.
"What are you?" Bruce frowned, looking at his latest. Who was looking, as Bruce tracked his gaze, not at Daniel but at the space just above him. Daniel himself seemed to take interest all of a sudden, breaking away his upward gaze to roll his head and look at them. Confusion plain on his face, the first hint of life shining dimly in his eyes.
"Signal? Signal, what do you see?" Batman asked. Robin materialized beside them. The daytime hero stepped forward, then back, light sparking and fizzling around his fingertips.
"There's something in there with him."
Daniel looked back up, where Signal still had his gazed trained on something Batman couldn't see. Even Robin seemed confused, though he no doubt trusted Signal's meta sight.
"Don't worry," Daniel murmured, "S'just a ghost. She can't hurt you."
This 'ghost' seemed unhappy either with the teen's words or this turn of events. Daniel's head snapped back to the side again, causing Batman and Signal to wince while Robin watched stoically. 4 red scratches appeared on Daniel's right cheek, as though he had been backhanded by someone with clawlike nails. A light chill brushed through him and Signal tensed, then relaxed, his gaze finally turning from the emptiness above Daniel to the boy himself. Batman took that as a sign that the... entity, was gone.
Daniel did not react to the obvious abuse from an invisible assailant. He mechanically turned his head back, once more dead and glazed eyes returning to the cracks in the ceiling of his cell. "You should go now. The guards will come around soon to make sure I'm still here."
Bruce wanted so badly to say 'Don't worry, we'll get you out of here.' But Batman was more restrained than that. He would get the child out. But he would have a plan first. For now, Bruce placed a hand each on the shoulders of Duke and Damien, guiding them away. Only when they were back outside did Bruce let them go. Only when they were perched on a rooftop half a block away did Batman pause.
"Robin, report."
"No escaped inmates and no sign of any from maximum security."
"Good. Signal, any information on what you saw in there." Duke rubbed at his eyes.
"A ghost, I guess? I don't know. It was weird. She didn't really have an aura. It was more like, an absence of aura. Like she was a black hole, drawing all the light in."
Even behind the domino, Bruce could tell Damien rolled his eyes.
"And what of the patient, Thomas? Was he not the one you were sent to look at?" Batman bit back the reprimand for codenames, more interested in Signal's response. Signal seemed to think for a moment, then shook his head.
"He definitely had a pretty distinct aura. It... felt powerful. But it looked weak. Dim. When the ghost... struck him, it flared up a bit, but died back down almost instantly. I... I get the feeling he was holding it back. Almost like he was afraid of it. Of himself."
"Hnn. Good job Signal. Robin. You two are welcome to head back to the cave. I'll take the rest of this Arkham shift."
At that moment, the comms crackled to life.
Actually B, you may want to come in, also. Arkham should be fine. And I found why they sent the kid there.

You've encountered site changes over time as a fan elder, what do you make of Tumblr potentially being put out to pasture? Tumblr was my coming of age fan site, and im looking for advice to transition to the next thing with grace and less bitterness than I feel now.
--
Ahaha. God, you should have heard the howling about LJ. "Fandom is over!" "Never again shall we dwell in fandom's True Home!" etc.
Hell, this endless "only LJ was good" crap turns up in replies here on posts where I as OP have very clearly laid out why that's rose colored glasses nonsense and you can so make friends on tumblr, have a conversation on tumblr, etc.
I had my crabby phase about this during the transition from Yahoo Groups to LJ. A lot of the real olds had it over paper zines and the transition to the internet.
I don't know if reading these hilariously samey old posts would help. It does give perspective, I think.
--
As for what you should do, do what I did with Tumblr:
1.
Look around to identify the Next Thing fandom is going to camp out on.
It may take a few guesses and some time to figure this out. You will likely not be an early adopter. Fandom was well established here by the time I joined at the end of 2010. Of course, by now, all those 2009 and before accounts are long gone, but at the time, I was a n00b joining other people's space despite having been in fandom for ages.
2.
Don't expect to enjoy it
I didn't join tumblr because I liked it. In fact, I despised it. I kept right on despising it until a brief stint in Sherlock fandom, a fandom that was so active here at the time that I was able to finally see the good aspects of the site's structure and features.
This is the mistake a lot of people make. They give things a cursory try, don't enjoy them, and go "not for me", forgetting that the last site also had a steep learning curve that was either difficult or that they didn't notice because they were in a different phase of their life.
Bitterness and grief are, frankly, an inherent part of the process. You can try not to be a debbie downer in your public comments, but you can't just not feel those things during the awkward part of the transition. Sometimes, acting positive and cutting off excessively negative thoughts can make you feel less negative overall, but it doesn't happen immediately.
3.
Accept that feeling cranky and old is both a you problem and a state of mind, not a property of the new site
Relatedly, the way we remember fandom platform X feeling usually has more to do with us being in college with fandom friends down the hall or having discovered Our People for the first time or some other time when we had a lot of energy and positive emotions. Often, we were in the throes of a first or new fandom love too, probably for some megafandom that other people also cared about at the same time.
When fandom is leaving some site, there's a grieving process anyway, but we're also often in a worse part of our lives for starting new things. We're busy. We're tired. We're between fandoms. We feel like we already paid our dues to build up our community. Why should we have to start again?
But let me tell you, you always need to start again eventually. I go to a weekly vidders' zoom chat, and a lot of the people in there are old as balls, including Kandy, the person who invented vidding back in the 70s. She's a lot of decades and a few cancers in, and she had to relearn how to vid on a computer after transitioning from slideshows to VCR vidding back in the day. If bad health, platform changes, and dead friends were going to stop her, she'd be long gone.
It's like sharks: you stop swimming, you die.
This isn't just about fandom, obviously. It's about avoiding a midlife crisis and, later, about avoiding feeling emotionally geriatric even when your body is falling apart.
Change gets us all, but being mentally old is a choice. The real reason I gave tumblr such a try was that I had been so resistant to getting on LJ. I was 20. Even a year later, it was fucking embarrassing to have been a crotchety old hag as a college student. I promised myself I'd soldier through the next change instead of dragging my feet about it. And it totally worked in the end! But boy did it not make the transition any less unpleasant emotionally!
4.
Find your joy
As is obvious from the above, the vast majority of the problem is just emotions. Fandom has been on a million broken sites with shitty features. We go where the people are, regardless of whether it has the technological aspects we liked at the last place. The actual shape of that platform is largely irrelevant.
What does matter is whether we as an individual fan are still excited and happy about something. I was between fandoms recently and went looking around for BL series I hadn't watched yet. People kept suggesting things set in the present day with too-cheesy production values and too many banal schoolboys in modern day settings without even anything spicy going on. I realized that the BL/danmei scene wasn't really cutting it for me and I should go for production values and genre and non-canon ships. You probably scrolled annoyedly past the picspams that resulted.
(Of course, hilariously, someone has now shown me the trailer of Red Peafowl, so someone may be making BL that feels like it's for me after all. Look at all that badwrong and very dark color grading.)
When you're in a good place emotionally, it's a hell of a lot easier to weather any change, and when you have a new fandom, it's a lot easier to connect with other fans.
A lot of people wait around for lightning to strike twice. They found their first fandom by accident, and they expect it to happen seamlessly again. For me, it's far more productive to brute force it: collect up a big list of what's popular or what's new and go through it till you find things you might like, then try them all.
And part of this, obviously, is not waiting for other fans to make the party happen. The more you need to join something other people are already doing, the less choice you'll have in fandoms or in platforms. If you aren't picky and just go where the tropey longfic is, that can work, but even then, favorite authors disappear or go to fandoms you hate and former megafandoms dry up. If you're the one bringing the party, it's a lot easier to find a new fandom or platform or community to have fun in.
