Parknight imagines, miscellany 20: well-versed
Parker's not used to receiving BOLOs via text, but he gets one from Knight this morning:
-BOLO: V agreed to let actress Chloe Marlene shadow me, so today might be complicated.
Oh, jeez. Vance is letting Hollywood into the building…? Parker wonders what the rest of the story is, but no sooner does he think this then he encounters a hubbub in the lobby at NCIS.
A woman dressed in all white tries to disperse her entourage as she signs in. "I'll be happy to wait for Agent Knight, then," Parker overhears her saying.
Parker sighs and steps forward, nodding to their distraught receptionist. "I'll take it from here, Sherry," he says, and she nods her thanks. To the assumed actress, he continues, "I'm Special Agent Parker. Special Agent Knight is part of my team, and I can take you to her. Miss Chloe Marlene, I presume?"
Chloe flashes a movie star's smile at him. She's slighter than Knight but has similar coloring, as if an artist had been given Jess Knight's vague description and filled in the blanks with their personal preference. But Chloe politely holds out her hand for him to shake. "Nice to meet you. I guess word gets around about me. But your director signed off on me studying Agent Knight."
He shows her to the elevator and lets her in first. "Not exactly. I heard from Knight herself. And that's 'Special Agent' Knight, by the way."
Impressively, Chloe whips out a little notepad and jots it down. "Got it. So Director Vance is the big boss and you're team boss…"
"Of the MCRT. Major Case Response Team," he supplies.
Chloe's eyes go big and wide at their official title. "Wow. That sounds impressive. I was looking up stats on Special Agent Knight to help prepare for my character based on her, but." Chloe taps her notepad to her chin and tucks it away. "Anything you want to tell me about what it's like to work as a team?"
Parker opens and closes his mouth. What to say? He's been on this team not much longer than Knight, but Knight's been part of NCIS a lot longer…and she's much better acquainted with being a team player than he is. At that, he chuckles to himself. "Knight is…the first person who comes to mind when you think of the term 'team player.'"
"Yeah?"
"Yeah. She's good at building bridges between people, making them see eye to eye. She's a quick thinker, on her feet. A helluva fighter, too, out in the field. Although, given the right topic, a helluva fighter if you get into an argument with her." Parker muses on the times they've had spats, both serious and more often than not ridiculous and when he's clearly been in the wrong. "She's…a stubborn one, but that's a good quality of hers, trust me. Pursuing a lead or having faith in her loved ones. Tying up loose ends or being supportive. There's nothing she does halfheartedly."
The elevator's quiet for a beat, and Parker realizes Chloe's eyes are on him for a wholly different reason now.
Because she asked for his professional opinion of Knight only for him to gush personally about her. Without filters.
Finally, Chloe smiles. "Wow. This Jess Knight lady is really loved, isn't she?"
And this, this is what Parker didn't mean to occur, but he knows he's dug a hole, letting his and Knight's secret spill.
But Chloe's smile is small, actually, and kind—one that hints she'll keep their privacy.
So Parker rubs the back of his neck nervously and concedes the truth with a nod.
Then the elevator doors open and Parker pretends he didn't just wear his heart on his sleeve as he introduces the actress to the team.
(But Chloe glances at him once more that very morning when she first spies Knight and gives her own nod, of approval.)

Been a while since we've check in, hm?
Well our little marine has set up a small group underground that helps hide people in need of an escape route.
Adrian had recently been helping a woman and her child get somewhere safe when he got a message stating that a resistance leader needed their helping getting from Germany to France. He signed himself up to help that leader, hoping that this would make them on good terms with the other group. He hated the combine and so did the resistance, it made perfect sense that they would team up.
Adrian is now waiting for this leader in the sewer system under a home. This system was probably used for illegal immigration from the two countries. That didn't matter now, there were no countries left. There was nothing but chaos and confusion. Barely nothing to eat, and even if you get a good enough meal, you'd probably get killed the next day because of it. Though, he had a healthy supply of things. Adrian was never a picky eater, and would eat anything if it means he could survive. Yes...
That does mean he started eating some of the alien species.
He notes that some deep fried headcrab meat actually tastes like deep fried chicken! It's also much healthier. With the mutated proteins in the headcrab, it seems that even covered in grease it'll still be healthier then any salad. Enough of the cooking talk though.
Which leader needed help? He only heard one of their names, knowing him as a close friend of... someone special. Eli Vance was the only name he knew within the Resistance Leaders, though he suspects that will change because of the future alliance. Maybe he could talk with Dr. Vance about that.
His heart stopped for a moment when he heard wet footsteps coming. He hid momentarily, before hearing the familiar whistle of a crewmember. He peeked around then stepped out, "Fred. You scared the shit out of me. Is the Resistance Leader here?"
"Not yet, Sherri is taking him here." The French accent made Adrian shiver a little. Accents were always a big thing for him. There was barley much of an accent in the mid west of America so heard someone from Texas, or even New York would make him swoon. God though, his accent was sure unique. Off topic! Focus. "Alright. Lets hope she actually does the whistle sooner then-"
Another familiar whistle was heard and a blonde girl was leading a man in stolen combine gear over. "Ho-ly shit. How'd you fuckers get that?" Adrian blurted, impressed with the suit being stolen. The man stayed quiet and Sherri ended up whispering to Fred that they should go.
Adrian rolled his eyes, "I'm, Adrian. Adrian Shephard. I used to work with the U.S marines but now I'm the lead operator of the underground. He smiled, hoping that small speech would impress the other.
"I know who you are already, Adro."

I really enjoy your posts about the next gen and I was wondering if you plan on adding more ships? Maybe Bickslow x Lisanna, Freed x Cana, Lyon x Meredy, Hibiki x Jenny 😳
Bixlow x Lisana is already a thing in my fics. They just waited longer to have kids than the other ships because they both wanted to make S-Class before having babies. (Also representation for couples who wait until later in life to start a family). At the time of this post they have one son, Vance. I don’t post much about him yet though because he’s still a baby.
I always had a head cannon of Cana being too free spirited to marry and have children, so she is sort of like the cool auntie to the kids.
I could see Freed getting married, but he doesn’t strike me as the type to have children. Just my opinion, no shade to fic writers and readers who like Daddy Freed, I just don’t see it personally.
As the Birthday Gang gets older (because they’re the MC’s of my fics) and go on more jobs they’ll start mingling more with children outside of Magnolia, thus meeting Hibiki x Jenny babies.
Meredy X Lyon I honestly haven’t given much thought on because I’m kinda neutral on the ship. Don’t love it, don’t hate it, just kinda meh for me. But I don’t have anyone else to ship either of them with so maybe we’ll see their babies when the BG gets older...
For other ships, in “Obsessed” it’s confirmed that Sting x Yukon’s have a daughter named Kari, and Rogue x Minerva have a son named Sacchi. Ren x Sherry also have a son, but I haven’t picked a name for him yet.

This year Nancy Drew turns 90-years-old. But instead of throwing her a well-deserved party, the writers behind Nancy Drew & The Hardy Boys decided to kill off the beloved girl detective, leaving the Hardy Boys to investigate her murder. One hell of a way to celebrate.
So for those who want to take their mind off Nancy’s demise and remember why we love lady sleuths in the first place, here are 15 books with female detectives that aren't Nancy Drew. Read them and savor them as you try to recover from this travesty.

Okay so this isnt a cool quote just the really fucked up dream I just had
So I was in the pool alone after browsing instagram all day and I was thinking about this one account that just posted a bunch of absolutely beutiful pictures and I was sad cuz I might be only to be that pretty if I had as good as a photographer/camera as them
So I went to the pool and for some reason it was night and there were a lot of other people there trying to figure out the puzzle answer for a door and I couldnt figure it out either
The next day I hopped back in the pool and there was no one there at like a really pretty sunset and at the time I was thinking about the pretty pictures on instagram I just had my arms on the side of the pool and my head down staring at the sunset
I decided to go inside when I catch a glimpse of a dude and for the stupidest reason looked like Vance waggoner but like the bojack horseman version... yeah
But also this other lady about the same age holding like a tablet I think? There were both smiling crazy as hell so I just rushed inside
I didnt think much of it thinking they were just playing a game and then it skipped to the next day, I went back in the pool
I was still alone, just kinda chillin and swimming around, then I wanted to back inside again cuz it was sunset again. But i turned to get out and my top had unhooked itself. Outside of dreams, my pool is in my backyard, surrounded by a million trees, so no one would see me put it back on
I was walking towards the stairs and i didnt realize that 'they' were still out but I was putting them back in so I didnt matter
But as soon as I started walking towards the stairs I see the man and the woman, both staring at me with these horrible smiles. The dude is behind the woman, and the woman is behind the tablet she was holding, a large tablet but somehow I knew that the camera was open. I tried to jump so I could swim away but I was too late...
I heard the sound of a camera starting to record and my jumping did not help me, I tried to say something like "IM TEN" to get them to stop or at least get the video taken down from wherever they post it, but they had stopped the recording by time I did, and they started running as fast, as fast as they could away from me and I just stood in the pool and cried.
I went back inside and who was waiting for me there? The man and the woman. In the dream my parents werent home, late shifts I think
They started trying to lecture me about how pretty I actually looked and I might feel ugly but the problem is the camera all the time
I cant rememeber word for word what they said except for this one quote I cant get out of my mind,
"You think you need a lot of makeup, but you've got it. We took this in the pool and you looked stunning anyway" and then he took the tablet and showed me the picture they took from the first day of being alone in the pool
The lighting, the aura, the angle, and just the general sound of the image was all amazing. For once, *I* was amazing. I didnt want to but they had started to change my mind slightly. I was sitting on the poolside with my head on my arms staring at the sunset with long, beautiful, wavy hair stretching out in all directions behind me.
And then, they showed me the short video
I had jumped at the second I saw the guy take a screenshot of me, my tits were perked up but you couldnt see the look of horror creep onto my face yet
And for the most horrible reason, they were out, up, and I had looked so... grown. From behind me the sunset had not only pretty colours but also did that thing where the sun had those pretty shapes from a line that always happens in movies
I hated it. I hated how much I loved it. It was so pretty, *I* was so pretty and I was exposed. At a shot, I tried to take the tablet from him but he was too fast and ran off, driving away.
I then turned to the woman. She told me her name was sherry, so at least that was good to know, I checked my phone after getting a notification of them posting something and I checked
It was me, the first picture was my long hair out, and the second made me cry.
I saw hundereds, if not, THOUSANDS of comments of people telling eachother my age, my school, my address, and worst of all, my profile
In seconds to minutes, I immediately started getting spammed with dms telling me how pretty I was, and that they wanted to see more, others telling me I was a slut, more telling me if I wanted to do "photography" with them...
I was sobbing. I had how real it all seemed. Then for some reason I wasnt in the same house anymore. I was upstairs looking down at a staircase and I saw the woman
I pushed her, obviously, she was threatining me with a taser if I said anything to anyone. So I pushed her
I took the cord she had the laser powered with and ripped it apart, and then started smashing glass on her wherever I could find it.
She was knocked out by now, and I ran and sat down screaming about why I had done this, and why this was happening
And in that moment of absolute helplessness, that desperation for something to stop going wrong, something to stop it, I rememebered theres a landline in the house
Ya know brain, I couldve gotten a dm from someone saying how they knew this was all something horrible happening, and that they wanted to help me. That would have been something really nice, brain. But no, you had to make me fill up with white hot rage and stomp to the landline phone
(This is where it gets worse)
I saw the woman was up and she was going to tell people that j was insane and was going to check me into a mental institution so no one could fight against her
I was trying to call 911 but I kept not getting the numbers right, because dreams suck like that. While I was doing this, she too, was calling the cops
I finally got the numbers right and waited for them to pick up but I heard nothing. It rang and rang for what felt like at least two whole minutes but... *nothing*
That's what did it. That's what made me feel like my life was over and I was going to throw up. Nit the picture, that would somehow eventually go away. But a mental institution? I would never get out to live
Then I heard sirens, and i wanted to destroy her
So I got up and grabbed everything I could to knock her unconscious again, and whatever didnt it still felt a little good to beat the shit out if her
I went outside and for some reason, dream reasons probably, the cops werent there anymore, it was my mom
It was dark as hell outside, and I had forgotten about how I was still wearing my swimsuit. My mom was trying to be angry, thinking that I had been swimming at dark, then she saw me crying and covered in bruises and broken glass.
I told her that sherry was still inside after showing people porn of me, "bastards"
I watched my mom call the police and when we both went inside, the Vance guy was there looking at what had happened to his partner
My mom tore him to shreds with screaming, and I could see he was about to start running, so I slowly creeped back outside and was going to grab him from the side door
I heard his footsteps going fast so I quickly opened up the door and grabbed him, threw him to the ground, and bit his neck. With my jaw chomped down, I jumped up, with a gory mess surrounding me
The police arrived and while I was thinking about how I was going to say something like "temporary insanity" in court, I woke up
Like I said, that dm could have saved me. If you see this happeneing, just tell them that its *okay* that everything is going to get better, that their life isnt over.
But I'm awake now, no swimsuit, no glass in my arms, not a slice of someone's jugular clamped down with blood filling my cheeks
Just a few tears and the hate for my brain

2019 Hugo Award finalists announced
Tumblr media
The 2019 Hugo Award nominees have been announced; the Hugos will be presented this summer at the 2019 World Science Fiction Convention in Dublin, Ireland.
Normally, I find that I've read and reviewed a huge slice of the year's finalists, but this year is different; I've done a lot less reading lately, partly because I wrote two books in 2018 and partly because the new EU Copyright Directive ate my life for about 10 months in the past year.
I was a little sad to be so far behind the curve when I saw the new list, but then I realized that this meant that I had a bunch of really exciting books to add to my to-be-read pile!
One notable inclusion: the Archive of Our Own fanfic archive -- a project of the Organization for Transformative Works (for whose advisory board I volunteer) -- is up for "Best Related Work."
