I know a lot of older people think it's a problem that so many young people don't want to have children, but I think it shows an increased understanding for how much of a responsibility parenting is and how much damage you can do to a child of you're not ready to raise someone.
I think that everyone is capable of being a good parent and I think that some people should never be parents. These may sound mutually exclusive but they aren't because there's a big if involved in the first half. That if, is that everyone is capable of being a good parent someday if they put in the work to take care of their own shit first.
When you become a parent or guardian, you are officially signing on to prioritize another person's physical and emotional needs before your own for the rest of their life. That means loving them no matter what they do or who they become. That means putting aside your own exhaustion and frustration at your day when they walk through the door so that you can be their champion and their confidant and their companion. That means teaching them how to process their emotions and think critically and empathetically and it means letting them find their own path, even if it's different than the one you wanted or imagined for them, but making it clear that if they need or want your comfort, your help, or just your ear that they will have it. You don't have to be perfect. No parent ever is, and it's important anyway for kids to learn in nontraumatic ways that adults make mistakes too and that's okay as long as you take responsibility for that and strive to learn and grow because of your mistakes. Kids learn by watching and listening to the adults around them and the things they conclude from those early years of observation will stick with them the rest of their lives.
I know that that sounds scary. It probably should because deciding to raise a child should be the biggest decision you can make, and if it's not, you may not be taking it seriously enough.
I also know that this is hard. And I have the greatest respect for people who truly understand this and decide to raise a tiny person anyway.
I'm also not trying to discourage you from becoming a parent. You may not be ready now, but that doesn't mean you can't be later. I personally would love to be a mom some day not I know that I have a lot of personal growth and healing I need to take care of first, to say nothing of the stabilization of my financial and career status.
The real question is what can you do to be a better parent, guardian, or even trusted adult to someone else's child (a really important and valid role and choice in itself!) later?
First off, you need to do some hard core introspection to figure out what traits and behaviors you have that might exhibit that would interfere in your ability to be a good parent. Maybe you're still emotionally immature. Maybe you're struggling with uncontrolled mental illness, chronic illness, or addiction. Maybe you've internalized some toxic ideas. Maybe you're still recovering from trauma or just now realizing that what you have even is trauma. None of these things makes you a bad person and none of them stops you from being capable to becoming a good parent. But, all of them can interfere with your ability to model healthy behaviors and coping skills to your child. Children learn through observation and, because their brains need the world to make sense and be predictable, they're going to interpret everytime you seem upset or lose your cool as being their fault. Young children aren't capable of going "mom is upset and snapped over something relatively trivial, she must be having a bad day/be tired/etc" because that's an interpretation of the world that is outside their control. Instead, they're going to go "I did x and mom got mad at me, it's my fault so I better not do x again" and that's a really harmful mindset that can contribute to self-worth issues and other mental illnesses like anxiety, especially if this happens long-term (for the record, you're going to make mistakes and you're going to snap over stupid things because being a grown-up is hard, so when you inevitably make this mistake it's important to be honest and upfront with your child about what happened, why, how it's not their fault, and you have to genuinely apologize for it, turning your mistake into a chance to model good adult behavior).
It's important to take care of yourself and let yourself grow and heal before bringing a kid into the mix because 1. you'll be a better parent if you start out in a better place emotionally and mentally, and 2. because you deserve the chance to be healthy and happy and it's much harder to address the things that are interfering with that when your also trying to juggle the additional emotional/mental demands of raising a child.
Additionally, I definitely recommend making sure you and anyone else taking a primary caretaker role in your child's life is in a stable financial and that the relationship between you and any other caretakers is stable and amicable regardless of what kind of relationship it is. The financial aspect is important because kids are expensive as hell (both the having/acquiring and the raising) and you want to be able to provide then with the best possible shot at life.
This isn't about me but I feel like the example will be helpful. We weren't poverty level growing up, but even as a child it was clear to me that we could be. My parents were 20 year old newlyweds when they got pregnant. My dad had been set up to inherit a position in his father and grandfather's construction company and did not go to college because they thought he was guaranteed a steady job. My mom was paying for a college education she couldn't afford because no one had ever explained how to get financial aid and scholarships to her and her parents were too caught up in their own shit to be anything but relieved about getting to make her future my dad's problem. Then they got pregnant. They started building a house that took much longer to build then expected because that construction business dad was expecting to inherit went out of business because it turned out that a cousin had been embezzling and my great-grandmother wouldn't let them sue or press charges against family. Mom had to drop out of college to raise me because daycare costs as much as she makes at work and she no longer has the time or funds. They had a baby they weren't prepared to raise and my dad's new job had him working in the Texas heat all day before going and working on our house at night so that we could move out of my maternal grandfather's house now that he was getting divorced and couldn't afford it. My parents society never saw each other and they were constantly worried about money. Less than two years after I was born they accidentally got pregnant with my brother. He ended up with failure to thrive and (although he did eventually recover) it raked up a serious amount of debt in addition to my mom's student loans and the mortgage. Flash forward four more years and my dad falls through a roof at a construction site and permanently cripples his ankle. Cue a year of the only breadwinner in the household being unable to work, several surgeries and massive medical bills we can't pay. A year after that my mom has to have a historectomy because her fibroids are causing immense pain and then they find pre-cancerous cells. Another year after that she starts having unexplained siezures and signs of organ failure that will take years to diagnose as a rare autoimmune disorder that will leave her disabled and, again, rake up serious medical debt. I found out in college that it came to the point that we almost lost the house but as a kid I still always knew we were struggling. And that fucks with a kid's head. There were reasons I didn't tell my parents that something was wrong for a week after I sprained my wrist when I was 10 and it wasn't just because I didn't want to sound like I was asking for attention (a phobia that also comes from having emotionally immature parents). I pushed myself ridiculously hard in school because I knew I couldn't expect any help paying for college from my parents. I still feel incredibly guilty anytime I spend more than 20 dollars even though it's my money and I need groceries or textbooks or gas or whatever. A lot of these issues would have been financially difficult and unpredictable, but had my parents been in a more stable position when they got married and started having kids, it would have been much easier to weather the storms.
Additionally, money is the main thing couples fight about, so if you can take that off the table as a significant concern before bringing kids into the mix, please do. Maslow's hierarchy of needs states that you can't address higher order concerns like personal growth of your worried about where your next meal is coming from and that goes for your children as well.
Again, I'm not trying to shame people for their financial difficulties. Most of us are playing at a game we were never intended to win and I get that not all children are planned. But, your good intentions unfortunately will not put food on the table or pay the rent and your children will have a lot less stress in their lives if you are able to make sure that things are as stable as possible before you bring them into it.
The same goes for your relationship with fellow caretakers. Don't try to have kids to save your relationship. Don't ever make your children feel like your relationship is in anyway their responsibility. Again, they need their world to make sense and if you're fighting they're probably going to assume it's somehow their fault. Don't do that to them.
Anyway, this rant turned out a lot longer than I intended but I think I needed to say it. In summary, raising children is not about you but your going to make it about you unless you take care of your own shit first. Children don't ask to be born. If you're not ready for that responsibility, either don't have kids or put in the work so that you will be. If you already have kids, and don't have your shit together, there's still time but it's going to be harder and you might have to do some damage control from any traumas you may have already inflicted on your child, regardless of your intentions. If that's the case, you have a responsibility to get your kid the help they need and do everything in your power to avoid further harm. You're the adult in this situation, and if you're going to be a parent, you need to act like it.

I’m too lazy again.
So I’m writing this via a fancy
Red iPhone.
It’s dawned on me through this output
Via tumblr and Instagram.
That my most dedicated fans
Are people from overseas.
And I love that !
For example the messages I get in my inbox
Are
From people, from Europe, Canada, Latin America and Oceana.
And
I want to say this,
I’m going to move back to writing
“Good” poetry, I don’t want too be all “dark” seemingly,
But you have to understand something
Where I am, in this country,
In America it isn’t like where you all are.
So this is what America is. So that the picture is painted clearly.
Everyone has mental illness here, from the elderly to toddlers, over the past few days, it’s been hitting me, how absolutely nuts everyone is here, and it literally can’t be underestimated, within this rampant mental illness, are physical ailments, take for a moment to think of the pandemic, unlike Western Europe, unlike countries like Vietnam or Cuba, The USA has completely fumbled the response to the pandemic and now as of this week the new “delta variant” is running rampant through our country, and our government is paralyzed, part of the paralysis, is that our Conservatives here, are pretty much “Neo Fascist” they are openly telling people to not get vaccinated and to not wear masks,
Violence is endemic to the mental illness, over the weekend, there was a shooting incident at a sporting event, in the past 3 years, we’ve had a mass shooting every month, Violence is also racial, the police routinely kill blacks, right wing and Neo fascist violence also takes place,
People our people are fundamentally isolated and trapped, it’s worse for our people who live in what we call here “flyover country” where there’s literally nothing, no jobs, nothing to entertain people, over large swaths of our country, areas have basically become hollowed out. Everything’s also very expensive, it’s extremely expensive here in California and New York, they did a study recently, that showed no one in America can afford a one bedroom apartment, that we would have to work 70 hours in one day, to be able to afford rent on our own, in this atmosphere, people rent rooms, in college my girlfriend told me I should rent a room because my family life at the time was extremely dysfunctional. People rent rooms in other peoples homes, people live with a bunch of other people, or they live with their families, and extended families, when I worked for the government last year, and I was going around interviewing people, the majority of people we’re living in small homes and apartments, with all of their relatives, that mix of so many people living in these confined spaces contributes to the insanity and chaos.
Everything’s expensive, and everything has a price, I had to go to an “underground dentist” in order to get the treatment I needed because my health net insurance wouldn’t cover those procedures and the dentist office I go to wanted to charge me hundred and thousands of dollars. Food is extremely expensive, alongside Gas, Rent, Utilities, I don’t mind saying this, I supplement myself with grey area economic dealings, but like everyone else I too worry about the bills, and it’s extremely stressful and makes me suicidal at times. But everything is expensive, from car registration to insurance, everything is fucking expensive.
Mainstream American Culture is super dumb, loud, chaotic, and fast, and over Sexualized, it’s pretty much like that movie idiocracy, that’s why we voted for someone like Trump to lead us, it’s a society, where every song on the radio is vapid, vulgar, extremely corporate, Celebrities are like Gods here in America, and the public follows everything they do, as if they’re part of them, or they’re cheering them on, there’s also this faux progressivism that makes everything polite, and nice, and it’s hated and despised by people, especially right wingers, because it comes off as so fake, and contrived, Mainstream culture has become extremely Bland, they use LGBTQI culture to further that blandness, it’s all so damn fake.
The interpersonal relationships people have with one another, are highly volatile, and weird, you could be literally dating someone, and a little thing occurs, and they block you on social media and that’s it, the vast majority of people are weird, and strange, you meet them at work, college, wherever, and they’ll reveal that shit about themselves. Finding people, like a collection of people, is hard, one of my best friends is a filmmaker lives in Echo Park in Los Angeles, and when I told him I’m going to focus on being in the LA arts scene, he revealed that he wants to too, thus revealing that he still hasn’t found anyone, and he went to art school!
People also don’t like talking over the phone which honestly makes me violently mad, for example my college girlfriend, preferred we’d talk over Instagram, and when I’d be all like, I’m going to call you, she’s be like I don’t like talking over the phone, when we’d be together her vibe wasn’t even like someone you’d think would not want to talk over the phone, but later on while in the car with some friends, one of my friends said, “some people like to talk, talk over the phone, or just text” and I was sitting there steaming, because I couldn’t believe how everyone just accepts this, if you are lucky to make friends with a collection of people, then you quickly have to adjust to what I call “normalcy life” going to bars, going to music shows, etc, and that can be nice up to an extent, but if you want deeper conversation or connection, or some sort of impulse towards adventure, you better look elsewhere. At most those people are just going to be down to snort Coke with you and do drugs.
There’s no conception of the future, having a future, certain friends will try to pretend like they’re going somewhere, but they aren’t, everyone pretty much is stranded, because there’s not enough money anymore in circulation, to live from. I’m 29 years old, I have friends in the same age range who aren’t married and who don’t have kids, and none of us talk about having kids or getting married anymore. Everyone’s more concerned about the struggles and stresses of the present. The friends that did have kids, are pretty much stranded in unhappy marriages or relationships, and it’s hell for them.
There’s no help either. Whatsoever, none of my friends, or people I know can ask their parents for help, either because their parents don’t have the money, or they’re neglectful or they’re totally fucked up.
If anything all these things have revealed a truly barbaric society, that is misogynistic and sexist, that is racist, that is prejudice against people who have physical and mental ailments and so on.
This will be part 1. Of my revealing of American life, diary posts.

Anger Issues
This is kind of a lil 5+1 fic I felt the need to do because of all the promos we’ve been getting showing Billy’s outbursts. Enjoy!
*gif not mine*
Tumblr media
I may be pretty as an angel, but I sure as hell ain’t one. That quote always made you think of Billy. Of course, you’d never tell him that—you knew why he hated being called pretty and you’d never call him that, plus he wouldn’t take it as the compliment it was. Even after his face got scarred, Billy was still upsettingly, unnecessarily good-looking. Which was doubly frustrating because you were sure you’d get over your crush on him one day, but he was not making it easy. Still, you would choose being his friend over being one of his (many, many) conquests any day. Besides, even with his scars, he was still your Billy. It took him a while to get comfortable with the scars, but once he did, he was pretty much back to his old self...
“The fuck you just say to him?”
You turned from your place at the bar as soon as you heard Billy’s voice. He was nose-to-nose with some huge, dirty blonde guy a few feet away from your table. Curtis was sitting, looking exasperated.
“And so it begins,” Karen sighed next to you, “Let’s hope that woman with the Mastiff can keep Frank occupied for another 10 minutes.”
“She will,” you put your empty glass down at the bar and started towards Billy, “Jesus Christ, Bill.” You muttered.
It took you less than 5 seconds to dissect the situation. The blonde guy, who was starting to look more and more ridiculous as you got closer, had said something to Curtis. Curtis, being a reasonable adult, had probably tried to ignore him, but Billy, your angry noodle boy, was not having it.
“Fuck off, Scarface,” the blonde guy sneered; a small crowd was starting to gather, “I was talking to the cripple, not you.”
You locked eyes with Curtis. Okay, maybe you could let Billy have this one…
“Yeah,” Billy rolled his shoulders, “that’s what I thought you said.”
In a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it flash of movement, Billy knocked the guy on his ass before anyone could even pretend to try to intervene. You took a step back and watched the show. The guy stumbled to his feet and threw a punch at Billy, but you’d seen this show before and weren’t worried. Billy shifted to the side and dodged the blow before delivering a harsh punch to the other guy’s jaw. You flinched—you could have sworn you heard bones break—and watched the guy hit the ground again. He didn’t get back up again. Someone started cheering and some guy yelled “drinks on me!” and you made your way to Billy’s side.
He glanced down at you as he massaged his knuckles. “Hey sweetheart.”
You rolled your eyes at his casual tone. “It took you, what? A total of 30 minutes to get into a fight?” You asked, sliding into the empty seat next to Curtis. “I don’t know why we even waste time going to bars. We should just rent you out for street fights.”
“Long as you’re the girl in the bikini with the score card,” Billy said, sliding in next to you. He put his arm around your shoulder, a habit that you took a special, secret pleasure in.
You leaned into Billy’s space and took a sip of his drink. “As long as we’re wearing matching bikinis,” you said easily, “Black is my best color.”
He smirked, and you hoped he couldn’t hear how loud your heart was pounding. “Mine too.”
“Can’t you two flirt on the other side of the booth?” Curtis sighed from your side.
You laughed. Curtis was always complaining about the two of you flirting and the ‘sexual tension’ between you and Billy. You guys definitely flirted with each other, but it was just for fun, and any sexual tension was certainly one-sided. The night went on smoothly after that; Karen went out and dragged Frank back in and you spent the rest of the night with Billy’s arm around you, laughing.
                                                          ********
“Holy shit, what happened to you?” It wasn’t even 6 am and you were standing in your doorway, staring at a beaten and bloodied Billy.
He stepped into your apartment, limping his way to the couch. “I went out with Frank last night.”
“And he what? Kicked your ass up and down New York City?” You went to the freezer and pulled out the icepack you kept for Billy.
“Please,” Billy winced through his words as you pressed the icepack into his side, “Frank couldn’t kick my ass even if I had my hands tied behind my back,” he kicked his shoes off and leaned into the cushions, “We had to check up on some assholes we met on the train,” he explained, “They were harassin’ this lady, we stepped in and…” He gave a one-shoulder shrug. “Conversation turned a little rough.”
“Conversation, huh,” you grabbed the first-aid kit off of the side table. This was not a new routine for the two of you.
“Mm hmm,” he closed his eyes as you dabbed at the blood on his face. He wasn’t hurt too bad, a few Advil and a good night’s rest would have him all healed up. “You should be proud of me and Frankie. We really tried to have a heart-to-heart with those guys.”
You chuckled, shaking your head. “You lie your ass off.”
Billy smirked, turning to look at you. “You think about my ass a lot, don’t you sweetheart?”
Your cheeks flushed. “Shut up,” you looked away.
“Mm,” he was still looking at you, you could tell.
“I’m gonna finish this,” you said, resuming your activity but refusing to look him in the eye, “and then I’m going back to bed. You need to shower and rest.”
“That an invitation?” He pulled back, so you were forced to make eye contact. He was still grinning, but those dark eyes of his were gleaming with something other than humor.
You pushed the rag you were using into Billy’s hands. “For you to shower? It absolutely is.” You stood up and started towards your bedroom. “And you better be here when I wake up, soldier!”
His answering laugh warmed you to the core, and you were strong enough to admit—if only to yourself—that if Billy really wanted in your bed…you’d be more than happy to welcome him.
                                                         ********
Billy was more pissed than you’d ever seen him before. You had taken him out for drinks and been having a great time before some guy grabbed your ass. Billy…did not react well. To say that he kicked that guy’s ass would be an understatement; the bar owner had to call the police, who had to restrain Billy to stop him from killing him. Luckily, no one pressed charges and the bartenders even attested to the fact that the guy had been inappropriate with you. The cops let Billy—a war hero and prominent businessman—off with a warning. Still, he was wound up. He drove you back to his place in complete, thick silence.
Billy almost tore the door off its hinges when you got to his penthouse. He slammed the door shut behind you so hard you could feel the walls shake. You stood by the door and watched him pace back and forth.
“Billy?” You asked, voice soft.
“Gimme a minute,” he growled back. His back was to you, and you could see how tense he was from the set in his shoulders.
“Okay…” You weren’t sure what to do—Billy was clearly still heated, and a part of you wanted to try to calm him down, but the other part wanted to respect his wishes. If he needed some time to cool down, you would give it to him. But the more you watched him stalk around his living room, the more concerned you got. His fists were clenched as he stomped around the room; at some point he’d shed his jacket and thrown it somewhere, and you couldn’t help but focus in on his arm muscles and the way his shoulders squared when he was angry.
He stopped suddenly and you heard him take a few deep breaths. His eyes were less stormy when he turned to look at you.
“Hey,” you said, raising your hand in greeting.
Billy sighed. “Shit,” he muttered. He put a hand through his shorn hair. “I didn’t mean to scare you, sweetheart, I’m sorry.”
“Wha—no, don’t be sorry. I’m not scared of you!”
“Then why are you all the way over there?” He asked. “I swear, I didn’t mean to lose my shit like that; I just saw that asshole with his hands on you and…” He took a shaky breath.
Your feet moved before you could even fully register his words. You launched yourself into Billy’s arms and let him engulf you in a hug. “That better?” You said into his chest.
You felt Billy’s answering chuckle more than heard it. “Much.” He tightened his hold on you. “This is how things should always be.”
“Yeah,” you ran your hands up and down his back and felt his body relax against you, “this is exactly how things should be.”
                                                          ********
“So what’s up with you and Billy?” Frank asked.
You were at Frank’s and had a lap full of puppies when he—unprompted—brought up Billy. “Nothing’s up. Why do you think something’s up? Did Billy say something was up?”
Frank chuckled. “Not exactly.”
You frowned. Things were the same as always with you and Billy. True, the last time you had been alone together had been the night he got into that fight at the bar, and you spent at least half an hour just holding each other. Nothing happened, of course—but you felt like there had been some kind of small, almost imperceptible shift in your dynamic. Since that last night with Billy, you started to notice a difference in the way he looked at you, and you seemed even more aware and sensitive of his presence. Maybe Billy had felt the difference too and didn’t like it. What could be wrong? “Is…Is he mad at me?” You asked.
“At you? No way,” Frank shook his head, “Billy’s crazy about you. And you’re…?”
“Friends,” you answered automatically, “we’re friends.”
“Yeah, and what’s up with that? I thought you’d be together by now.”
“Why would you think that?” You nudged a puppy off your chest. “Did he say something?”
Frank rubbed the back of his neck. “Aw… I shouldn’t say anything but…” He glanced back at you, and you could only imagine what you looked like: eyes wide and unblinking. “Bill really cares about you, and he’s been trying to… He wants…” Frank grunted. “Shit, this really isn’t my place, Y/N.”
“But…” Your words were interrupted by the slamming of the front door. The puppies started barking and ran to greet the intruder.
Billy stomped into the room, unseeing, and punched the wall. The puppies scattered in all directions.
“Oh, hey, Bill,” Frank said calmly.
“Hey, Frank,” Billy replied. He turned, rubbing his now bloody knuckle and blinked when he noticed you on the floor. “Hey sweetheart, what are you doing here?”
“Meeting Frank’s grandkids,” you answered, cradling one of the scared puppies to your chest, “You okay, Billy?”
He rolled his neck, a sure sign that he was making an effort to calm himself. “Yeah, I just… It’s fine. I’m fine.”
“What happened?” You asked as Frank walked passed you, bent down to pick a pup up, and wander to the kitchen. He didn’t seem too concerned with what was going on with Billy.
Billy flexed his hand and sighed. “I ran into your ex.”
“Derek?”
He nodded. “We had…”
“A conversation?” You supplied.
“I didn’t hit him,” he said. You nodded, spurring him to go on. “I really, really wanted to, but I didn’t.”
“What did he say?” Derek was your most recent ex. He had not been fond of Billy, and the feeling was mutual. If you were honest, the only reason you had dated him for so long was because you wanted to get over your crush on Billy. Obviously, the attempt had been futile.
“Doesn’t matter,” Billy plopped down next to you and draped an arm around your shoulder. One of the braver puppies approached him, and Billy let it lick his injured hand. “Just know you deserve better than him.”
“She sure does,” Frank tossed a beer into Billy’s lap and handed another to you. “Actually, me and Y/N were just talking about that. She was saying how she’s ready to start dating again.” You opened your mouth to protest, but Frank shot you a look. “Asked me to introduce her to some of the guys I met when I was doing construction.”
Billy’s eyes were hard when you looked over at him. “Mm,” he took his arm from your shoulder and stood up. “I gotta go.” He leaned down and pressed a quick kiss to the top of your head. “I’ll see ya later, sweetheart.”
                                                          ********
Later turned out to be that night. After Billy left, you tried to get Frank to spill the beans about whatever was going on with Billy, but he wouldn’t. You tried to figure it out on your way home, but you were at a loss. Frank had said Billy cared about you—which you knew—and implied that Billy wanted something from you? Had something to tell you? The idea that he had feelings for you ran through your head, but it was too good to be true and too ridiculous to entertain. You wanted to call him, but decided to wait until you got home first, give him a chance to collect his thoughts like you were collecting yours.
But when you got to your apartment, Billy was there.
He was leaning against the door, hands in his pockets. “Hey sweetheart.”
“Hey. I was just about to call you. What are you doing here?”
“I wanted to talk to you, face to face, without an audience,” he said back, pushing himself off the door, “can I come in?”
“Yeah, of course,” you let him in, heart pounding. When you turned in the entryway of your apartment, you bumped into Billy’s broad chest. When had he gotten so close to you?
“I gotta say all this now, or I’m gonna bitch out again,” he said on a breath, “Y/N, I…” He licked his lips and started again. “I… Listen, I just need to… Shit,” he hissed, rolling his neck, “Damn it, why is this so—fuck!” He flung himself away from you and slapped his hand on the wall.
“Billy, calm down,” you put a hand on his shoulder, “What are you trying to say?”
You heard him take a couple of breaths before he spoke again, back still to you. “I’m trying to say… that I want to be with you,” he looked up, locking eyes with you. “I’ve wanted to for a long time.”
“Oh.” You felt yourself break out in a smile. “Oh. Okay. Cool.”
“’Cool’?” He repeated, turning to regard you with a smirk. “I’m gonna need more than that, sweetheart.”
You giggled. Your heart was beating so fast you were sure you were a second away from a heart attack, but you couldn’t help it. You were almost hysterical with glee. “I—are you serious? You want…You like me?”
“I like you,” he answered, pulling you into his side with an arm around your waist, “I wanted to tell you a long time ago, and then I was going to tell you tonight, but I was sure Frankie had already ruined it, but then he said you were thinking of dating again…”
“No,” you shook your head, still grinning, “I never said that, Frank was just spreading rumors like the mean girl he is.” You cuddled in closer to Billy. “This… I’ve wanted this, too.”
“Mm,” he put his bandaged hand on your face, caressing your cheek, “that’s what I hoped you’d say.”
When he kissed you, you could have died happy in that moment, wrapped up in his arms—bloodied knuckles and all.
                                                         ********
“What the fuck did you just say?”
You narrowed your eyes, hands on your hips and a scowl on your face. You didn’t receive an answer, so you repeated the question. “What. The fuck. Did you just say to my boyfriend?”
The man blinked down at you, apparently surprised at the venom in your eyes. He had made the critical mistake of being rude to Billy in your presence, and you were ready to kick his ass. “Look, lady, I don’t need—”
“—I’ll tell you what you need,” you hissed, “you need to shut your damn mouth, turn around, and walk out of this bar before I make it so you can’t ever walk again.”
Billy put his arm around your shoulder and pulled you back towards him. “Take a breath, sweetheart,” he said easily.
You glared up at him. Behind him, Curtis was shaking his head and Frank was grinning from ear to ear.
“You need to put a muzzle on your bitch,” the man said, addressing Billy from over your head.
The easy smile on Billy’s face dissolved completely, and you wriggled out of his grasp and took a step back. You knew what was coming next. Billy swung and hit the guy right between the eyes. A spray of blood bloomed in the air before the guy hit the ground, screaming in pain. You smirked.
Billy turned back to you and pressed his lips against yours. You took his hand in yours and inspected the damage. You’d seen worse.
“One more round and then home?” He asked conversationally, wrapping an arm around your shoulder.
“Mm,” you answered back, “let’s just skip the round and head straight home.”
He grinned.
It could be said that Billy had anger issues, was impulsive, quick to violence, and—while he looked as good as an angel, he definitely wasn’t one, but, when it was all said and done…
…the same could be said of you as well.

My landlord is being such a dick. My mom was late on rent ONCE, just last week, because all of our bills hit all at once (and rent is more than $900, so uhh). Our landlord decided to tell my mom he was gonna do inspections inside, and my mom was out of town (I was home tho) so she said no because she’s out of town. The next day, they’re at our house looking around the outside taking pictures and shit. I didn’t mind that, what I minded was when I got up from my computer and turned around, (1-?)
Landlord was in the window right behind me with his phone up to it. I could see him through my curtains, but since it was darker in my room than outside he couldn’t see me. Scared tf out of me. Then a bit after that he tried getting in the house, trying to open the front and back door, and even going as far as to try to open the windows in my bedroom. I was home alone so it scared me shitless, so ofc I told my mom. My mom texted him if he tried to open my window and they were all defensive (2-?)
Saying stuff like “don’t turn this into a cause!!” (Which, what? What does that even mean??). They then left a note under our door saying if we didn’t let them in the house (and make a new house key for them bc for some reason they didn’t have one?) then they would change the locks. So ofc my mom was like can ya wait until we get home please?? But they wouldn’t. So my grandma picked me up so I wasn’t alone with them there at the house. Now today, my mom just told me that they’re charging (3-4)
Her an extra $100 for the rent being late, which, she says is understandable bc yknow late fees. The problem is we had an arrangement to pay half the rent every 2 weeks when we got paid (so it was always on time), and he decided that arrangement isn’t gonna work anymore and we have to pay in full today (July 1st) which we don’t have the money. I’m just so mad, this is so shitty and they know exactly what they’re doing
Yikes, their behaviour is SUPER shitty, and I’m so sorry you’re going through that - that sounds so distressing.
Make sure you keep records of all communication between you (so it’s better to communicate by text or email rather than by phone to make sure you can keep records of it if you can) and look up your rights as tenants. I don’t know about where you live, cause it will be different in different countries/states, but where I live tenants have a right to ‘quiet enjoyment of the property’ which means landlords can’t just barge in without giving you a certain amount of notice, and you have a right to request that you’re present whilst the landlord is in your property. And changing the locks sounds superduper illegal because that sounds pretty tantamount to like evicting you with no notice??? which is against the law in most places. And the landlord should have a key just in case there was an emergency and they needed to access the property. The whole situation sounds super sketchy tbh, so I think y’all should research what your rights are, and send your landlord a message in writing (preferably a letter or email) to say that you have xyz rights to xyz things according to xyz law, and their recent behaviour has been in breach of those rights, and if their behaviour continues, you’ll be forced to take further action. The whole “don’t make this a cause” thing sounds like he knows he’s in the wrong and he’s just trying to scare you off of fighting for fair treatment.
Sending solidarity and love friend, I know how rough it can be to have to deal with a shitty landlord, and I hope they back the heck down soon and let you get on with your lives in peace 💗

“So you just...walked up to him, the great-great grandson of a mesmer master bard who conceptualized this instrument and just....told him you wanted to buy an allegedly priceless family heirloom off him?”
“I did.”  Allura Diamante shrugged, rolling her jewel-like blue eyes.  “And we struck a deal.   You owe me full payment for it, plus my commission.  And a mount fee.  I had to rent a springer just to -get- to this guy.”
The Chronomancer narrowed his deep-set jade eyes, making it very obvious his skeptical gaze scrutinized the fellow mesmer before him.
Allura was a known cat burglar among the Collective, once part of a large thief heist ring.  On probation, no less.
“Listen, Aiden, I didn’t -steal- the thing, if that’s what you’re wondering.  I wouldn’t dare be that stupid when I very well know I’ve been in  your radar for some time.   Besides, this isn’t even a quarter of the dough I’d make with a -real- heist, so don’t even get me started....”
“Do you even have any proof it’s legit, that you didn’t steal the real one or that you didn’t get duped by buying a replica?”
The raven-haired woman scoffed, “Please.  I’m a pro.  It’s the real thing, and you’ll get a bill from me.  Pay up in full or I /will/ steal it back and sell in the black market.”
Before Aiden could retort with some asinine remark of his own, Allura vanished into an opalescent cloud of chaotic energy.
Hours later, the chronomancer had another visit, from a young personal shopper just starting off in the business of procuring perfect gifts.
Tumblr media
“Hey!  HI....Aiden.  So...I do have some not so great news?” Aiden reached for his silver cigarette case, not even casting a glance in Marissa’s way, “Let me guess.  You couldn’t get the owner to sell you the violin because someone stole it...”
“Um....no?   I mean, yes to the bit about not being able to secure a buy?   Someone beat me to it, literally just less than a day before I approached the heir.   He....he said someone offered an amount he couldn’t refuse.  I could’ve -maybe- beaten that amount had I the chance, given the budget you gave me?  But he had already committed to the sale, and wouldn’t even tell me how much he sold it for.  I couldn’t even propose a counteroffer.”
A sense of relief and amusement washed over Aiden’s face as he absorbed her words, flicking his Zippo lighter as he charged up a cigarette, drawing in a deep breath before slowly blowing out the smoke. “So she didn’t steal it after all..”  He muttered to himself, clearly humored, then glanced at the newcomer and raised his voice enough for her to hear, “It’s okay, Marissa.  I.....we can just forget about that job I hired you for.”
“Are...are you mad at me?  I’m so sorry I couldn’t deliver, I’m fairly new at this and I....”   The girl wanted nothing more than summoning golemancers to swallow her up.
But Aiden flashed her one of his boyish smirks in reassurance all was well on his end, puffing at his cigarette again,   “I’ve an even better...more suitable one for you in turn.   One I am -pretty- sure you’ll nail.  It’s almost like I’m -giving- you a Wintersday gift by asking you to shop for this next one....”
Meanwhile, as the chronomancer discussed a new Wintersday assignment with the young personal shopper, a clandestine delivery was taking place outside Coralie Minuit’s Ebonhawke residence.
The bell rang, and, once the redhead would see to it, she’d find a large crate on her doorsteps.  But at least the sad-looking package had a messy bow serving as the seal atop a burgundy ribbon tied across the box.   The sole tag dangling from its mediocre decor simply read:
“For Cherry Pie.  Never stop playing.”
Alas, while it was likely evident a musical instrument was trapped inside the wooden crate, it.....suddenly started to sound..../angry/.

“Eddie, my precious snicker bar! Let’s get going.” Richie implored. Richie’s new bit of the week was to call Eddie different candies. Eddie thought it was kind of funny and just proved Richie only ever thought about sugary sweets.
Eddie had spent the last 20 minutes packing what felt to Richie and Stanley like all his belongs. He was really worried about forgetting something important.
“I am just making sure I packed everything and did not miss anything,” Eddie said looking at his list for the billionth time.
“Eddie, you were very thorough in your packing,” Stanley said reassuringly. “You got everything on the list I made for all of you.”
“What list?” Richie asked lazily.
“Damn you, Tozier,” Stanley grumbled.
“We have to get on the road. WE ARE BURNING DAYLIGHT!” Richie shouted dramatically.
Eddie looked outside and could see Bill’s big blue van, affectionately called Mama, parked in his driveway. Beverly and Ben had gotten out of the car, so she could smoke. Stanley and Richie were supposed to be bringing Eddie’s stuff down so they could get on the road, but this was proving a challenge. “Shit!” Eddie went into overdrive grabbing the rest of his supplies.
“Richie’s right, Eddie,” Stanley said glancing at his watch. “Driving in the dark will not be fun.”
Richie and Eddie looked at Stanley horrified. Then Richie’s face broke out into a huge smile, “We all heard it. Stan the man Uris said I was right. Let it be known. Let it be written! Hell, tattoo it on my arm.”
“Shut the fuck up, Richie,” Stanley said. “But seriously, we have to get on the road. I scheduled out the trip down to the minute and you are holding us back 22 minutes now.”
“Yes, ok fine! Let’s go.” Eddie grabbed his backpack and toiletry bag, while Stanley picked up his suitcase. Richie grabbed Eddie’s dad’s skiing gear. Eddie wanted to rent his own at the skiing range, but his mom insisted he take them since they were collecting dust at this point. It was hard for Eddie to think about his father. Sometimes, he wondered how his life would have gone if his dad had not died. Maybe his mom would be less protective and they would be happier. Then he would feel guilty for feeling this way when his mom had tried to do the best she could with a terrible situation.
“I like your dad’s skis. They are so cool.” Richie said admiring the black skis with hand painted stars on them. Eddie smiled at him as they made their way downstairs. Fortunately, his mom was out today. They had been arguing every day about him going on this trip. She got fed up with a final plea last night. Eddie did not back down once, even if his mind wanted to give in. He knew Richie would be really disappointed if he did that to them.
Eddie held the door open for Richie and Stanley. “We are only going to be gone a weekend, Eddie!” Ben said shaking his head. “We still need to fit Mike’s stuff.”
“You’re our resident architect, Benny boy. So start architecturatoring and fit all the stuff in Bill’s car!” Richie put the skis under the tarp on the roof.
Stanley fixed him with an exasperated look, “Architecturatoring is not a word, you idiot.”
“How does Richie get better grades than all of us?” Ben teased.
“My theory is he has a photographic memory,” Eddie grumbled. “I call shotgun!”
“Challenge!” Richie yelled. The two of them flew at the passenger door handle. Bill’s head shot up to watch them shoving each other. He was sitting in the driver's seat looking at the map but raised it slowly to hide behind. Eddie wiggled his way in front of Richie and wrenched the door open, trying to climb in.
“G-g-guys...chill. Don’t hurt, Mama. She’s a sensitive car.” Bill said nervously at their squabble. Richie caught Eddie’s legs to pull him out before he could sit down.
Eddie yelled trying to free his legs, “I get car sick!” Eddie complained while kicking at Richie. He had managed to turn Eddie around, but Eddie was holding onto the door frame for dear life.
“You lie, dear lollipop! You just get so nervous when others drive you that you make yourself sick.” Richie was grinning smugly because he knew Eddie would not be able to hold on for very much longer.
“Same difference!” Eddie could feel his hands start to slip. “Fuck.”
“This is not how I pictured getting between your legs for the first time,” Richie laughed crudely. Every single loser groaned at the horrible innuendo.
Eddie aimed a well-placed kick to Richie’s chest for revenge. The lanky boy stumbled back rubbing at the new pain. Eddie slammed the door and locked it, then rolled down the window to stick his tongue out. “HA! Suck it, Richie!”
“Buy me dinner first,” Richie choked out as Eddie flipped him off. “You kicked me! The jelly bean of my eye kicked me.” Richie was in total shock.
Stanley glared at them, “You deserved it.” He checked his watch again. “Get in the fucking car everyone. We need to get Mike. I’ll sit behind Bill since I am navigating.”
Bill and Eddie looked at each other anxiously from inside the car. Ben, Beverly, and Richie stood staring at Stanley in surprise.
“Stan...is that such a good idea?” Beverly said hesitantly.
He looked at her incredulously, “Why wouldn’t it be? It’s my family’s place, I know how to get there.”
Ben piped up, “Sure, it's just that...when you are under pressure...you kind of…” Stanley’s gaze darkened and Ben lost his courage to continue.
“That is to say,” Beverly tried to explain sensitively, “When you have to be in charge of directions you...it’s just…”
Richie interrupted because this was taking too long, “What Benverly are so eloquently trying to say is YOU have a terrible sense of direction, will get us lost, then freak the fuck out in a typical Stan the Man way. Eddie should navigate.”
“Don’t bring me into this,” Eddie said warningly from his seat.
Bill leaned over Eddie to speak out the passenger window. “Eddie can just do it, Stan. He’s a really good n-n-navigator.”
Stanley gapped at all of them trying to hide his hurt, “I will not freak out! And I can read a stupid map, Bill!” Stanley went to Eddie’s window and grabbed the map from Bill’s hand.
“I’m n-n-not s-s-sayin yuh-yuh-you can’t…” Bill always stuttered worse when people were upset at him.
“I will be perfectly fine to navigate, stuttering Bill. Let’s GO!” Stanley stormed to the other side of the car. Eddie saw Bill flinch at the harsh use of his usually endearingly spoken nickname. Bill leaned back in his seat looking straight ahead.
“So excited to spend the weekend with my besties!!” Richie cheered sarcastically. “We are so good at communication.”
“Beep beep, Richie,” Beverly said quietly. “I’m going to sit in the middle because I get a bit car sick on long rides if I can’t look forward.”
“I call next to Bev!” Riche yelled. They put the back seat down so Ben could climb into the way back. Eddie tried to glance at Stanley for reassurance that he was not too mad, but his face was hidden behind the map. Beverly gingerly sat down in the middle seat beside Stanley, as Richie squished next to her slamming the door.
Eddie saw Beverly slowly place her hand on Stanley’s arm. He tensed, then folded up the map taking a deep breath, “I’m sorry, Bill.”
“All good,” Bill shrugged and the subject was dropped for now. “Play some muh-music Eddie.” He started the car and drove out of the driveway.
Eddie went into his CD holder, “What do we want to listen too?”
“AC/DC!” Richie shouted.
“Joan Jett!” Beverly countered.
“Journey!” Ben said.
“I’d listen to some Journey.” Stanley agreed.
“Alright, Journey before Mike gets here and judges us.” Eddie popped in the CD.
“I’m judging us.” Richie pointed out.
“We’ve got 4 and a half hours in this car together. I will only be judging us.” Stanley said smiling as the rest of them laughed.
They got to Mike’s place and Ben worked to fit everything in the car. It was jam-packed with their bags, coolers for drinks, and snacks galore. They said goodbye to Derry and were off on their adventure.
  HOUR 1:
“I want to listen to Michael Jackson.” Mike pretested. Currently, the car was filled with AC/DC music.
“No Mike, we always listen to Michael,” Beverly said. “How about Tears for fears?”
“THRILLER!!!” Mike sang.
“That’s such a spooky song,” Ben said.
“It's close to midnight and something evil's lurkin' in the dark,” Mike kept singing. Eddie turned in his seat so he could look back at Mike. He was giving Ben crazy eyes, which made everyone laugh.
Ben giggled nervously, “We should be listening to Christmas music, it is December.”
“That’s not fair to Stan.” Beverly pointed out patting his hand.
“It doesn’t matter much to me-”
Mike put his hands on Stanley’s shoulders, startling the poor guy. “Under the moonlight you see a sight that almost stops your heart.”
“You just about stopped my heart,” Stanley put his hand on his chest.
“Gay,” Richie said.
Eddie smacked Richie’s leg and watched as Mike removed his hands from Stanley’s shoulders then unbuckled his seatbelt. Eddie shook his head about to say something when Mike sang louder, “You try to scream but terror takes the sound before you make it,” Mike crawled half over the backseat between Stanley and Beverly.
“Mike!” Stanley yelled, “Put your seatbelt back on!”
“Sit down Mike!” Bill said harshly glaring at the rearview window. Eddie watched Ben struggle to pull Mike back but the taller and stronger boy would not budge.
Mike’s voice was drowning out the AC/DC music at this point, “You start to freeze as horror looks you right between the eyes, YOU’RE PARALYZED!” Everyone was shouting at Mike to sit down, except Richie who had joined in singing.
“JUST PUT THE SONG ON EDDIE!” Stanley shouted looking at him with terrified eyes. Stanley, Ben, and Beverly managed to yank Mike back into his seat. Stanley hurriedly buckled Mike as the guy just laughed at his friend.
Eddie went into his CD case, took out his Michael Jackson Disc and popped it in the player blasting Thriller.
“Don’t do that,” Stanley said berating Mike.
“Aw, Stan! You care so much for me. Now shush! The king of R&B is singing.” Mike and Richie sang thriller doing the dance moves in their seats.
They kept listening to Michael Jackson but when Billie Jean came on, Richie was getting bored. “Why is every love song so fucking straight,” Richie complained.
Beverly laughed, “Rich, I keep telling you to give David Bowie a chance.”
“No, I refuse.”
“You have no reason to not like him. You just don’t because he’s different from other rockers.” Eddie huffed out.
“I am not that shallow, Eds.”
“Don’t—“
Beverly interrupted, “Richie you are a self-proclaimed bisexual man, you should try to listen to him!”
“Just because Bowie is bi doesn’t mean I’ll like his music,” Richie argued.
“I always thought Richie was Eddie sexual,” Mike said aloud.
“MIKE!” Eddie yelled horrified as he buried his red face in his hands. Everyone laughed and Eddie heard a hive-five behind his seat.
“Anywayyyy,” Beverly continued, “He’s so provocative and incredible. Please, let’s listen to one song.”
Richie considered it for a moment then conceded, “Fine. Put him on.”
“WHAT!” Eddie spun in the passenger seat. The seat belt prevented him from turning fully. “Ow,” He gasped rubbing at where the belt jabbed into his neck. He went to unbuckle his seatbelt so he could look at Richie properly.
Stanley reached forward and put his hand firmly over Eddie’s hand. Eddie glared at him viciously. “What the hell, Stan?”
Stanley did not back down or remove his hand, “You aren’t pulling a Mike. Only one of us can give heart attacks over seat belt behavior. Keep it on!” They kept staring daggers at each other until Stanley slowly removed his hand, ready to prevent Eddie from unbuckling if he had too.
Richie leaned over Beverly to make eye contact with Eddie and give a shit-eating grin, “Here’s my beautiful face for you to yell at, you tasty gummy bear.”
Eddie’s gaze sharpened on him, “I spent HOURS trying to convince you to listen to Bowie but you kept stubbornly refusing. Beverly barely even tried.”
“Beverly’s my best friend, you're my boyfriend. Not listening to you is my job. Keeps your ego in check.” Beverly laughed behind him. She pushed his head down so she could make innocent eyes at Eddie.
“Un-fucking-believable.” Eddie turned back to face front. Richie poked his side and he jumped reflexively.
“Put it on, marshmallow.” Richie cooed. “Give me some of that sweet Bowie sound.”
Eddie blushed as the rest of the car laughed at them. He grabbed his CD case and put in his David Bowie mix. He scrolled to the best song he could think of and let it play.
The smooth rock sound began with a clever rhythm. Everyone stayed silent to listen. Eddie lip-synced along to the words.
“I, I will be king
And you, you will be queen
Though nothing, will drive them away
We can beat them, just for one day
We can be heroes, just for one day...”
Eddie heard, “I love this songggg.” From Ben in the back but someone shushed him so Richie could really focus.
“...We can be heroes
Just for one day
We can be heroes…”
When the song ended Richie immediately said, “THAT IS LITERALLY OUR LOSER CLUB THEME SONG. PLAY IT AGAIN.”
Bill laughed, “You s-s-said Africa by Toto was our them-m-me song last week.”
“I spoke too soon! I have now been blessed with Bowie’s Heroes. EDDIE PLAY IT AGAIN!” Richie grabbed his sides to poke him repeatedly.
“Do...Not...Richie...don’t!” Eddie was trying to hold back laughs as he was tickled. “I’m pressing play! Chill dipshit.”
  HOUR 2:
“Beverly, did you pack cigarettes?” Richie asked worriedly.
“Yes, I...wait...Richie, I left them on my dresser.” Beverly moaned.
“Fuckkkkkkkk.”
“This will be good for you two,” Ben said encouragingly. “You both have talked about quitting.”
“Not cold turkey!” Richie whined. Eddie was watching the road carefully and saw as Bill drove past where they were supposed to merge.
“Hey, Stan…” Eddie said anxiously. He turned his head to look at Stanley. His curly head was buried in the map, hands shaking a little, and legs fidgeting. Eddie and Beverly made eye contact both thinking the same thing.
“What,” Stanley said barely controlled.
“I think we were supposed to get on the other highway just now.” He said with caution.
“We’re lost.” Richie guessed.
“We are not!” Stanley brought down the map to glare at Richie.
“Let go of your pride and give Eddie the map,” Richie said with a casual tone. He truly lacked any tact.
“I am not being prideful!” Stanley defended. "And we are not lost!"
“Get off here, Billy,” Eddie interjected. “We need to turn around.”
“How do you even know that?! I have the map.” Stanley huffed.
“Memorized it,” He really did not want to fight with Stanley but he was not going to let them get lost.
“You’re all against me!” Stanley roared.
“No we aren’t Stan,” Mike’s calm voice came from the back. “I trust you with my life and you are amazing at many things. Directions just aren’t your strong suit.”
Eddie expected another explosion but it was completely silent. Then he felt the map being shoved into his hands. He looked back at Stanley as the boy crossed his arms and stared out the window frowning.
“Let’s play a car game!” Beverly said to break the tension.
“What game?” Bill asked a forced cheeriness.
“Padiddle!” Richie yelled excitedly. “It’s the best game!”
“Padiddle only works if we can see taillights are out. The sun is still out, so you can’t really tell.” Stanley pointed out. There was only a little bite to his voice, maybe he did not want to stay mad.
“And I am not striping in front of everyone for padiddle,” Eddie added over his shoulder.
“Only for me,” Richie laughed.
“Shut up, Richie!”
“I’ve got one.” Ben jumped in. “I used to play it with my mom. You look into other cars and make up stories about what might be going on. Someone starts it then it goes to a new person to continue the story. Does that make sense?”
“Start us off Ben,” Beverly insisted.
Ben cleared his throat, “Alright, see the car on the right a little ahead of us? There are three teenage girls inside.” Eddie turned to see a red jeep with the three girls. “Tiffany, Tamera, and Tina decided to run away from home because everything was becoming too overwhelming...”
Mike spoke up, “So they packed up everything they could and took to the road not looking back. However, Tina had a secret...”
“That secret was um…” Stanley hesitated, “That she wanted to marry Tamera and Tiffany’s older brother Terri. He was planning to meet them in Vegas in a week so they could get hitched...”
Beverly continued, “Tamera and Tiffany would later be enraged that their friend would lie to them and make a plot to get even...”
“They would lure Terri and Tina into a false sense of security,” Richie said in a spooky voice. “By saying the wedding was a great idea but really they were going to kill them both for their treachery...”
Eddie piped up, “The murder would be slow and painful. However, Terri and Tina found out about the murder plot and decided to plan their own murder!”
“The wedding was a mess of murder and chaos and only one of them survived. The end.” Bill finished.
“Bill,” Ben said, “What the fuck, who survived?”
“Yeah!” Richie hit Bill’s shoulder, “You can’t leave it there.”
“You’ll never know.” Bill grinned.
Stanley laughed to himself, “I’m more concerned that we turned it into a murder spree. Do we need therapy?”
“Definitely,” They all said in unison.
  HOUR 3:
“Are we there yet?”
“No.”
“What about now?”
“Do you see us at the cabin yet?”
“When will we be there?”
“Richie, shut up.” Stanley and Richie had been going on like this for a couple minutes now. Richie’s constant stream of thoughts unyielding. “Eddie, make him stop.”
“If I knew how I would,” Eddie said lazily.
“Pull over Bill! I have to take a piss.” Richie said.
“Can you hold it another hour?” Stanley said frustratedly.
“No can do Stan the Man. When Mother Nature calls, you don’t ignore it. Just pull over—”
“Actually, can we go to a gas station so I can go?” Beverly asked.
“Sure,” Bill put the indicator on to get off the highway. Ben, Beverly, and Richie got out much to Stanley’s complaining.
“Get me skittles while you're in there!” Mike yelled to them. Richie gave a thumbs up.
“I feel like one of us should follow them,” Stanley said anxiously.
Eddie turned his head to look at him reluctantly. “By ‘someone’ do you mean me?”
Mike waved his hand dismissively, “Ben’s there, he’ll make sure they behave.”
“Ben has the backbone of a chocolate eclair,” Stanley said deadpan.
It took a moment for the joke to sink in but slowly Bill, Mike, and Eddie started laughing. They were cracking up so hard their sides hurt. Eddie was wiping away tears as he said, “You should have a fucking standup act, Stan.”
“B-but his only audience would b-b-be us.” Bill said turning in the driver's seat to smirk at Stanley.
“It’s the only audience he needs,” Mike put his hand on Stanley’s shoulder good-naturedly.
“Bunch of softies,” Stanley mumbled smiling.
Bill’s eyes shifted to Eddie’s window. He squinted with his mouth slightly agape. “Why are they running?” Eddie whipped his head to look out the window. He saw Richie yelling something; with Ben a little before him running faster than Eddie had ever seen him run; and Beverly taking up the rear.
“Richie is shouting something,” Eddie rolled down the window. His heart beating a little faster.
“START. THE. FUCKING. CAR.” Richie screamed. They were almost to the van.
Eddie looked to Bill, whose eyes were wide in confusion but he started the car saying, “Shit shit shit shit.” Over and over.
Ben got to the van first his momentum banging into the car then wrenching the back door open. He climbed into the middle seat saying, “COME ON BEV!” Out the open door.
Richie opened the front passenger seat door. Eddie was so confused he did not have time to process as Richie plopped onto his lap, slamming the door after him. Eddie made an “Ugh” sound at the surprising weight on his knees.
He tried to speak, “Richie! What the…”
Richie interrupted him, “Bill, put it in reverse, fucking be ready to go,” He leaned his back into Eddie’s chest putting his upper half to one side, so as not to squish Eddie. He could feel Richie’s heart beating a mile a minute.
“Babe, what happened?” Eddie asked trying to stay calm. He pushed back the curls sticking to Richie’s forehead, staring at him with concern. Richie leaned into the touch with his eyes closed taking deep breaths.
Suddenly, the weight of the car shifted as Beverly got in, “DRIVE BILL!” She screamed sliding the van door closed.
It was then that another voice could be heard through Eddie’s window. An angry vicious voice, “You shithead kids! I am calling the police!”
Bill was already putting the car in reverse then floored it out of the gas station and back on the highway. Eddie wrapped his arms around Richie’s waist tightly. Richie had his right hand gripping the grab handle above the door frame and his left on top of Eddie’s arms holding on for dear life.
Bill accelerated the car, they hit a pothole and everyone screamed as the car got a bit of air. Richie’s body lifted off Eddie’s for a moment then smashed back down on his lap as the car landed roughly. Eddie’s eyes prickled with tears at the impact on his crotch and he tried to muffle a scream as he instinctively tightened his grip around Richie.
“Rich,” Eddie said through gritted teeth, “Motherfuckingshitballs shift over a bit. That fucking hurt my dick.”
Richie chuckled, “Now’s not the time for dirty talk Eds.” He shifted to relieve him. Eddie pressed his face into Richie’s back, to hide his pained face and let the familiar cologne calm him down from a potential panic attack. Acting as a seat belt for Richie was proving terrifying.
“Someone explain what happened immediately,” Stanley said in a tone reminiscent of an angry parent.
“Not telling you, dad.” Richie responded immediately.
“Beverly and Richie are...are...IDIOTS.” Ben said in exasperation sounding on the verge of breaking down. “Sorry Bev, I don’t mean it but what you did was so dangerous and frankly careless.”
“I know I am so sorry,” Beverly choked out. Eddie could hear the coming of Beverly crying, so he tapped Richie to tell the story.
Richie got the hint, “Well as you all know...Beverly and I have an addiction to cancer sticks.”
“Already don’t like where this is heading,” Mike said from the way back.
“So just like when we used to swipe cigarettes as kids, we did operation ‘Flirt and grab’,” Richie explained.
Eddie shifted so his mouth was free. “Beverly, I hope Richie didn’t pressure you to um…”
“Whore myself?” She let out a small laugh even though it sounded watery from tears. “Don’t worry Eddie, I was not doing the flirting. I was not the man’s type.”
Eddie groaned, “Don't tell me…”
“That’s right!” Richie said passionately, “I took one for the team and turned on the Trashmouth charm. My flirting was going great and...”
“I somehow doubt that.” Stanley interrupted.
“Yeah Richie, you can barely flirt with Eddie.” Mike laughed, “You are a garbage can of Mom jokes, innuendos, and saying Eddie is cute.”
“That’s cause he’s the cutest!” Richie turned to kiss Eddie on the mouth. He did not reciprocate, peeved that Richie was even trying to flirt with someone else. “Don’t be mad at me, Laffy Taffy, it did not go in our favor.”
Eddie made a disgruntled noise, so Richie turned back forward trying to get comfortable against Eddie’s chest. Richie let both his arms settle on top of Eddie’s arms, which were still clutching around his waist for safety. Eddie put his chin on Richie’s left shoulder, their heads leaning into each other. “As I was saying, I flirted then Beverly snatched cigarettes while the foolish man was distracted. However, we did not count on him propositioning me, so I tried to shut down the mission too soon and the guy looked at his camera screen to see Beverly stealing. So I did the only sensible thing, hit a display of snacks to distract, grabbed Benny Boy’s hand and screamed ‘HAUL ASS BITCHES’.”
Eddie placed a hand over Richie’s mouth, “Inside voice.”
Richie pulled his hand away, “Oh! And nicked candy,” Richie reached into his pocket and threw a pack of skittles toward Mike’s direction.
“Thanks!” Mike said cheerily.
Richie opened his own pack of starbursts. He took out a red one and tried to feed it to Eddie. He grimaced, “Did you wash your hands after going to the bathroom?”
Richie rolled his eyes, “Yes, gumdrop.” Eddie let him plop the candy into his mouth, savoring the cherry goodness.
“Bill?” Beverly said nervously, “You’ve been quiet.”
Eddie shifted his head to look at Bill. His friend’s eyes were slits, brows furrowed and hands gripping the steering wheel so hard his knuckles were white. He was breathing harshly through his nose trying to stay calm. “I’m really disappointed in you guys.”
Eddie raised his eyebrows looking over his shoulder to see Stanley’s surprised eyes and Ben’s hurt face. He could not see Beverly with Richie’s body preventing any more movement but assumed she was none too happy. No one commented on the fact that Bill did not even stutter.
“We are sorry, Bill.” Beverly said in a small voice.
“I’m not, we got the cigarettes,” Richie shrugged. Eddie rolled his eyes toward Bill’s enraged expression.
“Suh-suh-sorry about this, Eddie.” Bill seethed before taking his right hand off the wheel and aiming for Richie’s crotch. Bill hit home and Richie yelled in pain. His body convulsed on top of Eddie as he put his hands over his hurt manhood. Richie automatically tried leaning forward but Eddie’s arms were a vice.
“Fucking hell, Big Bill.” Richie put his hands on both sides of his legs taking deep shuddering breaths of rage. Eddie rubbed his hands in slow circles above Richie’s stomach making shushing noises. This seemed to help a little. Eddie definitely did not feel sorry for Richie, he was always getting himself into these situations.
“Ok. We are even.” Bill said cracking a smile. The rest of the car exploded into laughter. It was about 20 more minutes before Bill asked if they should pull over so Richie could sit in the back again.
“No, I like sitting in Eddie’s lap. He never lets me.” Richie nuzzled his face into Eddie’s neck brushing his lips over his skin. Eddie’s mind began to swim at the distracting lips.
“That’s because you weigh too much,” But Eddie realized this was a weak excuse. He actually really liked Richie being on his lap. Ever since he was a kid, people wanted Eddie to sit on their lap because he was “small and cute”. It was different having someone important to him sitting so close. It actually felt very adult. Richie started pressing his hot mouth against his throat making Eddie’s pulse quicken. Richie ran his teeth lightly over the sensitive skin by Eddie’s ear then trailed wet kisses across his jaw. Eddie wondered briefly if Richie knew what he was doing to him. Then the lips smirked into Eddie’s neck and it was all too clear...Richie was aware of exactly what he was doing.
“Still think I weigh too much for ya?” Richie laughed into his ear. Then he shifted on his lap getting even closer to Eddie’s body making him gasp.
“Pull over,” Stanley mumbled. “Eddie and Richie are making me nauseous.”
Eddie felt mortified that he let Richie be so bold in front of their friends. His face was on fire.
“Just as I was about to give him a lap dance,” Richie laughed.
“Beep Beep Richie,” Eddie hissed.
“Also, does the car feel unbalanced?” Bill wondered aloud.
“Probably the extra Richie weight in the front,” Mike shouted.
“Everyone stop roasting me about my weight. Fucking rude.”
  HOUR 4:
“Yep, the tire has definitely lost a lot of air pressure,” Ben said with a sigh, his breath showing in the air. They all stood around the wheel shivering from the cold. Richie was hugging Eddie and rubbing his arms to keep him warm.
“P-probably the p-p-pothole we hit,” Bill kicked the tire. “Mama deserves better than us.”
“You gotta use a straw to blow air back into the tire,” Richie suggested.
They all ignored him, “You got a spare?” Mike asked heading toward the trunk.
“Under all our shit,” Bill said miserably.
“Let’s work together to get it then,” Richie followed Mike. Eddie looked at him in surprise. He must feel guilty for being the reason this happened. Together they took out all their stuff that was blocking the latch where the spare tire lived.
“Oh good, it’s the same as the other tires. So we don’t have to get a replacement.” Ben said as him and Mike heaved out the tire. Bill picked up the Jack and lug wrench.
“Bev, can you…” Bill began.
“On it!” Beverly went into the glove compartment grabbing the driver’s manual.
Beverly, Ben, Bill, and Mike went to the front to start replacing the tire. Stanley and Eddie went to work on putting everyone’s stuff back in the trunk. Richie stood around smoking a cigarette giving terrible directions such as:
“You have to put your head under the car to get a proper angle, Benny boy.”
“It’s lefty hefty, righty titties.”
“Those directions are in Chinese.”
“You have to remove everything then quickly throw the tire underneath and pray to God it latches.”
Most of these joke made Beverly and Ben laugh but the rest ignored him. When Stanley and Eddie finished putting everything back in the trunk, Stanley said, “Since I don’t know anything about cars...I’m going to sit in the car before my ass freezes.”
“Rich,” Eddie said getting the attention of the crazy boy. “Leave them alone and let’s wait in the car.”
“Coming my Reese's Pieces,” Richie cooed. He turned to Beverly, “The old lady needs me.” She put her hand up to her mouth stifling a giggle.
“Jesus fucking Christ.” Eddie glared. “Just get in the car, you idiot.” Eddie got into the front while Richie hopped in the back.
Stanley was already sitting in the car reading his copy of The Shining, his legs under a blanket he got from his bag. Richie scooted in the middle seat, grabbed half the blanket and snuggled next to Stanley, who promptly rolled his eyes but went back to reading.
“Stan the Man is so warm,” Richie said putting his head on Stanley’s shoulder. “Hope this doesn’t make you jealous, Eds. You are still number 1 cuddle bug.”
Eddie laughed, “I don’t get jealous when it comes to you.”
“Liar,” Stanley mumbled.
Eddie’s eyebrows raised, “Excuse me? What does that mean Stanny?”
He cleared his throat still not looking up, “Do you think Richie likes Bill better than me?” Stanley had raised his voice in a clear attempt to mimic Eddie’s voice. Eddie’s eyes went to Richie who was grinning from ear to ear.
“Oh come on,” Eddie said seriously, “I was like 10 when I felt that way.”
Stanley glanced up at him, “Stan, I think Richie has a crush Beverly. They always smoke and hang out. Richie knows I hate smoking, so they don’t invite me.”
Eddie crossed his arms, “14! I bet you can’t find a recent example.”
The trunk opened with a gust of cold wind, as Mike and Ben tossed the supplies and old tire in the back. Bill opened the driver’s side door and Beverly opened the back door to bring the seat down for the guys to pile in.
“Hey Bill, what did Eddie say to you a couple months ago about Richie being neglectful?” Stanley asked mischievously.
Bill looked at Eddie with a cheeky grin, “That Richie is neglectful b-because ‘he never hangs out with m-m-me anymore. I thought we were d-dating. He hangs out with everyone more than me. Don’t people d-dating see each other all the t-t-time? I miss him’.”
“That was at the beginning of our relationship!” Eddie said in horror. Richie had doubled over with laughter laying sideways on Stanley who had the biggest smirk on his face.
“But Eddie, you see each other every single day.” Beverly chimed in.
“I-I well...I mean…” Eddie did not know what he meant. This conversation was starting to be really embarrassing.
“I got one!” Mike said jumping into the way back with Ben following behind him. Beverly got in letting Richie stay in the middle seat. Bill started the car and they were back on course.
“Shut it Mike!” Eddie seethed glaring at his friend.
“No…” Richie said between laughs. “Please go on Mikey!”
“Last week, Eddie found out that a girl in homeroom likes Richie. So he made sure she knew you two were seeing each other by kissing in front of her locker the next day.”
“Traitor!” Eddie screeched.
“You said you were kissing me in public because I looked hot that day!” Richie said in mock hurt.
“Eddie thinks he plays it cool. It’s all an act.” Bill chuckled.
“I looked up to you once!” Eddie punched Bill’s shoulder.
“Eddie, it’s funny come on…” Stanley said through tears in his eyes.
Eddie pointed at Stanley, “JUDAS!” Everyone’s laughter got stronger.
“That’s it, I’m going to make this weekend unbearable for all of you. You think Richie and I were gross earlier? Just wait.” Eddie turned forward and opened the map harshly to make sure they were on the right track. “Beware my revenge bitches.”
“Do I get a say in this?” Richie asked poking Eddie's side. Everyone had quieted down a little at Eddie’s threat but were still cracking up.
Eddie frowned, “No, you’ll take my PDA and like it.”
“Fine by me, my jawbreaker.”
“Gross, I hate you.”
“Whatever you say, sweet tart.”

The Dealer~Chapter 26~Calum Hood
THE DEALER
CHAPTER 26
JAYDE P.O.V
Buying out of our lease sucked. It cost more than the rent I was paying but I was happy that we were able to move out and into a home!
While I was at work for the last few weeks, Calum had been packing up our place. It was difficult to pack while we still needed things so he started in the living room packing away books and movies and anything that was never used on a daily basis.
Next he moved onto winter clothes that weren't being used since the weather was warmer. It was difficult for me to let him pack because I liked things done a certain way. It was strange when he moved in because I was used to the routine I had and suddenly there was another person that I was caring for.
And then the baby came along and for a very long time I was frustrated when things didn't go my way.  There were things that I liked to do at the same time everyday and it seemed nearly impossible after having a baby who had different plans.
I had decided to take a few days off work so that I could help Calum pack our things. We had gotten the house inspected and we were ready to move in. Our lease was ending in a few weeks and we needed to get everything packed and moved.
My parents were here helping the best they could but they pretty much just watched the baby for us.
"We're going to take  trip to the house and drop some things off. Can you watch her for a few hours?" I asked.
"Of course we can." Calum drove the truck to the house while I drove my car. My next plan was going to get Calum a car so that when I went to work, he wouldn't be stuck in the house with the baby all day. He could take her out to do stuff. I knew it was going to get expensive so I've been having my dad help me look into leasing a car.
As as soon as we got to the house he started unloading boxes. Julia and Luke showed up not long after to help us. We worked as fast as we could so that we could get back to the apartment and start loading the truck and car up again.
I could tell that Calum was getting annoyed. It had been a very long day and people were constantly bothering us about things we wanted to keep or things we wanted to throw away. I rubbed his back as he stood to eat his pizza.
"You can go lay down for a few if you want." I whispered to him. "I'll hold down the fort. Just lock the door." Our mattress was on the floor in the apartment and as much as it sucked trying to get in and out of it, I wanted him to go relax. I knew if he didn't he would be angry and he would take it out on me later.
"I will after I eat." I smiled kissing him before turning back to my own piece. We appreciated the help from everyone but sometimes it was just annoying. Calum and I both were very much people who liked alone time. I liked spending time away from people including him.
Once we were finished eating Calum went to lay down while I stayed to pack more things. We had a month to move out of the apartment but I wanted to move into our house as soon as possible. Why would I stay living in a tiny two bedroom apartment when I could be living in my four bedroom home?
"Where did Calum go?"
"He went to lay down. Please leave him alone." I promised him that I wouldn't let anyone bother him. "I'm assuming he took V with him." I looked around and she wasn't anywhere to be seen.
"Yes." My dad answered. I wiped everything down so that we wouldn't be charged a cleaning bill before moving onto Violet's closet. I packed away all of her stuffed animals and books. I also packed most of her bedding but left a few in case she spit up on it.
"We're gonna head out." My mom came into the room. "Thank you for dinner." She smiled.
"Thanks for helping us. We really appreciate it." I smiled standing to my feet. "I would hug you but I'm sweaty and probably smell."
"Don't worry, Darling." She smiled as I walked them to the front door. "Hopefully you'll be all moved in soon."
"Hopefully." I sighed. I wasn't too worried about the move itself. I was worried about unpacking everything in the new house. Calum would probably have to do most of it himself.
"With both of you working it's probably hard." I wasn't going to correct her. Calum wasn't working and he hadn't worked the entire time I've known him. He wasn't using me at all. He wanted to be here with our baby and I would rather him stay home with her than to work.
"Yeah. We'll figure something out." She smiled.
"Bye." They both left and I locked the door behind them. Calum came out a few minutes later as I was taping boxes.
"Finally." He sighed sitting against the wall. We had already moved everything from the living room.
"I'm sorry. I know they can be a lot." I looked over at him. Violet was sitting between his legs but leaning into him since she couldn't quite sit up on her own yet. "Can I take your picture?" I asked.
"Sure." He commented smiling as I took a picture of him and Violet. "Should we give this girlie a bath and then head to bed? I say we take apart the crib now and let her sleep in our bed. That way we can just put it in the truck tomorrow."
"Sure." I smiled standing up before picking her up and taking her to the bathroom. "Do you wanna take apart the crib while I give her a bath?"
"No." He commented sitting on the tub. "I don't know how to do it."
"I don't know how to do it either." I commented. "Luke built it." I shrugged. I was hugely pregnant by the time I had gotten the crib and I wasn't strong enough to hold it up.
"I'm sure I can figure it out." He commented placing a towel on his lap so I could place Violet in it and he could wrap her up. "Don't pee pee on me." He talked to her in a funny voice making her giggle.
"She giggled!" I shouted excited. "Oh my god! That was the cutest thing I've ever heard in my life." I don't know why but I teared up.
"What's wrong?" Calum asked pulling me into him.
"I'm just so happy." I cried trying to wipe my tears. My little girl was getting so big and I hated that I was going to miss even more of her life now that we were moving outside of the city. Usually it takes me 20 minutes to get to work. Now it's going to take over an hour with traffic.
"It was a beautiful sound I agree but I am exhausted so can we get her dressed so I can take the crib apart?"
"Yes, dear." I smiled picking out her pj's and got into bed with her trying to get her to sleep while Calum took apart the crib.
"What the fuck!" He shouted so many times making me giggle. I stood up from the bed with Violet in my arms and went into her room to help him. "Is she not going to sleep?"
"Not with all the shouting no." I giggled. "Do you need help?"
"Yes. Come hold these for me." He commented and I stood to help him. I wanted to ask him if he was still dealing drugs.
"Are you still dealing drugs?" I blurted. It was as if my brain wasn't working and my mouth took over. I mentally cursed myself because I did not want to fight about this.
"Yes." He casually commented. "It brings in extra money so that I can help you." I sighed.
"I don't need your help."
"It makes me feel like shit that you pay for everything for us." He commented.
"Then get a real job. You could be arrested." I commented as I laid a piece of the crib on the floor. The last thing I wanted was for him to be arrested and our apartment or house being searched for his drugs. I did not want to lose custody of Violet because he was doing something stupid.
"I tried to get a job remember? It didn't work out." I sighed again. I felt like I was going that a lot to him recently.
"I mean there has to be something you can do." I commented. He didn't respond as he took apart the crib but kept the screws together so that we could rebuild it once we moved into the house.
"Good night." He commented going to our room and laying down. I looked over at Violet who was still wide awake giggling in her seat.
"You think it's funny that daddy's mad at me?" I questioned her picking her up and sitting down in the rocking chair trying to get her to sleep. I stuck a pacifier in her mouth to help keep her calm but she just kept staring up at me. I sighed standing up and heading to our bedroom that was empty besides our mattress and a few articles of clothing. I quietly put Violet on the bed next to him before changing and getting in beside both of them.
Calum had his eyes closed but he tucked Violet into him and turned over so his back was to me.
"What's wrong?" I asked touching his back and he shrugged me off. I slowly lifted my hand off of him and rolled so our backs were to each other. I was freaking out. The last time this happened he left and I didn't hear from him for weeks.
I heard his breathing change not long after but I couldn't sleep. I hated knowing that he was mad at me and that we were moving into a house together tomorrow.
I got up early next the morning to start packing things into the moving truck and my car. We didn't have much left. I slowly carried each piece of the crib to the truck and set it up so that they wouldn't break when the truck started moving. I was able to get the last of our things into the truck before going to wake up Calum.
He quickly got Violet changed and handed her to me before going to change himself. The last thing to go was our mattress and thankfully he was able to get it into the truck by himself.
"I told them we would leave our keys." I commented putting the keys under the mat like the guy asked me to. It felt so strange that we were able to move into our own home. "I can't believe we're actually moving into a house."
"Yeah." He commented. I wasn't sure what the future held with our family. I had never asked Calum where it was going. I would love to spend the rest of my life with him and have more kids but I wasn't so sure anymore.

Becoming A 12 Year Old Adult
Our memories of early childhood are usually quite blurry; it’s hard to remember specific details, but sometimes a memory sticks out. Most children remember exciting life events like birthdays or a baby shower. While I have plenty of happy childhood memories, it seems that most of the tragic memories have taken over.
The summer before sixth grade we moved to a little cabin in Bethel. The cabin on Byam Road seemed like a saving grace for my parents because the rent was so cheap. They both worked full time jobs, but raising 3 young children isn’t easy when you have bills to pay, so we moved quite often. The cabin had 2 bedrooms so my sister and I shared a room while Tyler who was only 5, shared a room with my parents. Upon first glance, the cabin wasn’t much to look at. A very basic kitchen with a tiny stove, two small sinks, and a fridge. There were only a few cupboards, and zero counter space, so there wasn’t much room for storage. The interior of the cabin was dirty to me. The wood wasn’t smooth and shiny like hardwood floors typically are, the wooden walls were warped, gusts of wind would blow right through the cracks in the wood, but it was a place for us to live so I tried not to whine.
My parents both worked full time, my siblings and I spent most of our mornings at a daycare of some kind, dinner was always on the table even if money was tight, everything seemed normal to me as a child. Sometimes my parents would argue, but it never seemed to be a big fight. One time my dad moved out and slept in his van for a few days during a fight, but they always apologized to each other and continued to take care of us. April 21st: I don’t remember much about school that day, only that the secretary’s office told my siblings and I to ride the bus to my aunts house instead of going home. This was pretty normal for us because we spent most of our afternoons with her, and given that today was the last day of school before spring vacation officially started, it was possible that we would be having a late bon-fire or something. I remember walking up the road and seeing quite a few cars in the driveway, it looked to me like there might have been a party going on so we all got excited hoping there would be a barbeque. Getting closer to the house I noticed that it was quiet and no one seemed to be laughing, must’ve been a hard day at work I figured.
My Aunt Rita told her son Kyle to take us up the road to the neighbors farm because he needed help feeding the sheep and pigs. Being kids, we were pretty excited and bolted up the steep driveway not even noticing that my mom had been crying, and not stopping to ask myself why dad was ‘missing’ from the crowd of people. I’m not sure how long we spent feeding the animals, it could’ve been a few hours, we wanted to stay all night, but I knew it was probably dinner time soon so we had to leave. We were sitting at the counter, my mom was crying so hard she couldn’t form words. Everytime she looked up at us she would cry harder, I knew something was wrong. Suddenly I had a moment where I realized dad wasn’t here, and why were the other guys home from work so early anyway? I knew dad was definitely hurt but even as a child I knew that my mom wouldn’t be here if he was hurt, she would be at the hospital with him, it must’ve been worse. She couldn’t get the words out, she choked when she told us he had a heart attack at work and died this morning. My initial reaction was to make sure the whole family knew. I wanted to call his sisters and his dad...I wanted to make sure everyone knew. I didn’t cry like everyone else was, and it made me feel uncomfortable so I wanted to be alone. I went down the driveway to the pond and sat at the picnic table and out of nowhere my mom comes down to sit with me. I don’t remember what we talked about but I was a little irritated that she made me go back up to the house where all the people were. The rest of the day is a blur. We more-than-likely spent the night at my aunt's house, possibly longer. I don’t really remember the funeral either.
When spring vacation was over, it was time to go back to school. My Aunt Rita came with us so she could help my mom talk to our teachers and the office staff about what had happened in our family incase my siblings or I acted strangely in school. I remember my teacher announcing it to the class and it made me very uncomfortable to have the spotlight on me with something so personal. Our class trip to Hulbert, and outdoor center in southern Vermont was a good distraction for me, it was nice to be away from everything going on at home and having a few friends I could hang out with. I didn’t talk about my dad to any of my friends or family growing up; my mom always pressured me, but I never knew what to say.
Shortly after my father's’ death, my mom went back to work. It had been several weeks and we were getting tight on money but it turns out she wasn’t quite ready. A coworker approached my mom and asked her how the kids were doing. Apparently for my mom this was a snapping moment because she yelled at the person, “How do you think they’re doing?” and then she instantly quit her job. I think that was the first day I was really mad at her. How could she quit her job? What were we going to do for money?
So many things began to happen after my mom quit her job. She was only 27 when her husband died. Now that I am the same age, I can understand how she could become so depressed and fed up with life, but at the time I was just so angry with her for quitting her job when we needed it the most that I didn’t bother trying to understand what she was going through.
Friends and family ended up staying with us all the time. Every night
we had someone sleeping on the couch just to hang out and keep company with us and my mom. At one point my cousin moved in with his girlfriend and their three kids, but I can’t quite remember the order of events. Mom started spending her child support money on drugs and got caught up with the younger adults doing drugs and dealing cocaine out of our kitchen. My mom and dad had always smoked pot, so one day when I saw her and a few guys smoking something different I questioned her and she tried to hide it. That’s how I always knew when she was lying to me.
With drugs came different men, and that usually meant more drama along with it. Since my mom had me when she was 16, she never finished high school and grew up in my opinion, so her depression took her into a downward, immature spiral. The house on Byam Road is where I lost my father, but it’s where I lost my mother as well.
I remember coming home from school and mom would be gone, sometimes she would leave a note on the table for us and sometimes she wouldn’t. I got used to it and started to understand a pattern. If there wasn’t a note she was probably up at my aunt's house or just in town shopping and would be home later; but when there was a note it usually had phone numbers and a list of chores she wanted us to do while she was gone. Sometimes she would be gone overnight and wouldn’t stock the cupboards before she left so we didn’t have much food to eat. After awhile she stopped paying the utility bills because she didn’t have a steady source of income. Eventually we didn’t have electricity or heat so in winter, the water pipes were frozen solid and eventually burst. I was using a stupid little cell phone as an alarm clock because it ran on a battery, and I had to charge it at school in the office just so we could wake up for school every morning.
My mom would usually get home in the middle of the night and then be sleeping all day long until dinner time. Because we didn’t have a car most of the time, we had to take the bus home from school and couldn’t participate in sports or after school programs. Going home wasn’t always fun when we lived in that cabin. It was always a gamble if mom would be home or not. If she was home she could be sleeping or have friends over being loud and obnoxious in her room. Either way the three of us were technically left alone and had to fend for ourselves. I always made sure my siblings did their homework, I even turned it into a game for Tyler since he never wanted to do it. I would make simple foods for dinner like grilled cheese, mac & cheese, or frozen pizzas. In the beginning of the month we would get food stamps, so we always looked forward to going shopping. My mom never even wanted to go shopping, she sometimes would send me in the store with her EBT card and just sit in the car. I became a great shopper though; learned how to get the best deals on my own.
When we had utilities but no food to eat, I could call my grandmother or aunt and someone would pick us up if we were left home alone. They always came to our rescue. They always sent us home with containers of food so we could eat later too. We always begged to stay at grandma’s house, I don’t think she ever realized how bad our home life was. I know she suspected something because of my mother's’ behavior, but she never asked us questions. When the utilities were shut off for good, I’m not even sure how long we lived there afterwards. With no propane, it was very cold in the house. I remember sleeping with several blankets and getting dressed under the covers in the morning. I even slept in my bed with my pile of clothes to keep them warm. My cat, Tommy, would sleep under the covers with me too. He was my best friend. Anyway, Tyler usually shared a bed with my sister that way they kept warm together. So many crazy stories, I’m not sure where to start.

Is there a cheaper way to drive my parents car with insurance.?
My parents won't let me drive their car without insurance (which i understand). To be added to their insurance policy will cost me $100 a month, but I would only use the car once or twice a week. I think its ridiculous to pay $100 when I would barely drive the car. Is there a cheaper way to drive their car just when i need it and still be insured?""

Auto insurance question?
I had full coverage on my auto policy. My car is at a point where I'm not going to fix it because it would cost more to repair then to replace. However, I'm not going to replace it at this time. My question is, since I will be renting cars at least twice before I get a new car, how do I handle my auto insurance? The policy currently covers rental cars, and is cheaper than the insurance the rental company offers, so I'd like to keep it. should i go ahead and cancel my auto policy, even though I will be driving other cars before i purchase another?""
Can someone explain somethings about Car Insurance to me?
Okay, long story short. Last week I got in a car accident with some friends. My back is messed up and I went to the doctor Monday. He told me that my lower back muscles, tendons, and my lumbar are all swollen and sprained. My parents want my friend's family's insurance to pay for the doctor bills, plus they want to get me something (I think it's called compensation or something, I can't remember) basically, the insurance company will pay me money. I guess my questions are just these: If you were my friend's parents in this situation, would you be mad? Is my family technically suing my friend's family? Does her family find out about this or is it all confiential between me, my parents, and the insurance? We live in Washington state and got in an accident on the Interstate, heading down to Seattle for the afternoon, if it changes anything""

How can forcing people to have car insurance compare to forcing health insurance?
Actually this equates to Slavery by the government??? You do not have to buy car insurance if you do not own a car. Secondly, if your car is paid for then you only have to have liability insurance to protect others not for the repairs of your own car. Yet, forcing everyone to have health insurance would fall on every individual regardless of age, sex, race, income, ect. If you do not have enough after paying your monthly bills you will be fined and even serve prison time with a $25,000 fee. This essentially goes against Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness isn't it? Liberals want to say everyone should have, and the government should provide? Yet, this is not government providing it is government enslaving you to have?? Slippery slope they are weaving and the benefits will be far less than we have today with the government oppression on each individual.""

Having difficulty cancelling auto insurance with allstate?
I switched from Allstate to Geico on Feb 21st (a Sunday). I called my local Allstate guy on Monday the 22nd. He said he'd cancel the policy, and I logged into my Allstate account online on the 27th and it still wasn't cancelled. I called their 24 hour customer service and spoke with someone who said they'd put in the request to cancel the policy again. I log into my bank today and they WITHDREW my March payment! So I called them again and they said the policy was still active. The lady I spoke with tonight said they will need to see proof that I'm with Geico now. Why didn't anyone tell me that the first two times? What do I need to do to get my policy to be cancelled? I've been with a few other auto insurance companies in my day and I've NEVER had this much of an issue getting the policy cancelled! As of now they owe me well over $200 and I'm afraid they're going to play games with me before I get my money back. What are my rights and options??""

Car insurance cost in UK... seems too expensive?
I was planning to buy a car in UK. Initially I was planning to buy a high end car but a friend of mine suggested to get a small engine car to get cheap insurance. I am new to UK - have been driving cars in India for over 10 years but the insurance was in dad's name so dun have any no claim bonus. When I compare insurance cost online I don't find much difference between a small car and a big one. Even the cheapest car costs about 2000/= to insure for the first year (for a new driver with no NCB). I don't quite understand it - are theses quote real? Any suggestion for me? New or used? Big or Small? My top concern is cost of insurance.

New drivers (permit); what can save money on insurance?
Okay, new drivers in the family (got the permit today). Of course, DMV rats you out to Allstate, and Allstate charges a ton for insurance (Arm + Leg). Oh, two new drivers. So I'm looking for ways to show good character to Allstate or find a cheaper insurance. Now, I know some basic things about Auto Insurance: A) Good grades (above 3.0 gpa) can get a discount from some insurers (usually 10%). Have this. B) I drive a moderate car (not SUV or sedan). Good condition. C) The car will be shared between 2-3 young drivers. Since they can't all be in the car at once, I imagine this could reduce costs. D) No criminal record and no disciplinary file at school. E) In the Fall, Drivers Ed is offered. I understand that it also can reduce costs F) Parents are responsible drivers (low insurance) Who tends to be cheapest with Auto Insurance? Am I wrong in any of the above statements, and is there any other factors that can save money? Where is the best place to get a quote? Thank you!""

What would happen if a car insurance policy gets canceled to nonpayment?
Okay so my car insurance is with geico and my monthly is 157.90 per month liability. & I'm in college and I had a issue with my financial aid and my mother doesn't have any money as well. They gave me up until tomorrow (September 22) before they drop me. I really like them because they said my rates would go down quicker by using them. Will Insurance cover this?

I also dented the gas tank. In the 2007 Prius I believe there is a rubber bladder inside the tank that holds the gas. I am not sure how bad it is to have a dented tank such as mine. What are the cheapest auto insurance companies for young drivers?
What is the cheapest major auto insurance company for a 19 year old male, with no violations or accidents? Going to be buying first car in the next couple weeks and need insurance. Getting a much older used car so I don't car much about comprehensive and such, just want state minimum coverage (20/40/15 in IL) to be legal. I've seen quotes from Progressive, Geico, The General and Safe Auto. So far, geico has been considerably the lowest. I checked various models I was looking at, on average progressive was about $100/mo, the General and Safe Auto were around $120 and geico I saw the lowest as $45/mo ranging up to $80/mo (but I've already eliminated that car- a ford probe that sold before I could test drive) I'm wondering if anyone knows of any other major companies with lower rates, otherwise I'm obviously going with geico. Right now my options are down to a mitsu eclipse or a camry/corrolla/accord (something of that nature, whatevers on the lot and priced right) The eclipse from geico I believe was around 60-70, I imagine the camry would be more in the 45-50 range. Car insurance..please answer?
Basically my dad is paying 1600ish pound for an insurance policy, with me as a named driver on his car, that was a few months ago he got that, however now, if we was to do the same policy because we have had the car for a few months it would be 1100 ish, if my dad got a new car which he is thinking of doing, and transfered the insurance onto that (substituted it) but the car was a bit nicer and slightly more expensive to insure, would the price inrease because of the car, or decrease because im slightly older and insurance is getting cheaper for me""

Should I pay my car insurance premium?
I purchased a car for my daughter last August and paid the annual premium. In November the insurance company said I cancelled her coverage and they issued me a refund for the remainder of the policy year (thru July). I didn't know what the refund was for, but deposited the check anyway. I don't know what I did to cancel coverage (for just this vehicle, all my other vehicles remain covered.) I don't dispute that I must have done something.... In April I found out I didn't have coverage for this car by my accidentally calling the insurance company about another question. I asked for them to reinstate the coverage immediately. They did and sent me a bill for the full amount of the refund, plus another $176. I feel I should only pay insurance for the remaining two months on this year's policy since, if I would have had an accident, the insurance company would not have covered me. They say they can't charge me for just the remaining two months, but that they have to bill me the full amount (plus what's with the additional $176 charge?) I'm thinking that I should just go to another insurance company and get the car covered. Any thoughts?""

If i add my sister to my car insurance, because she is a woman and older with lots of driving experience it will lower my insurance quote simply because she is on there. But does she need to actually use the car, or can i just get her added to the car for the saving. I know the insurance company wouldn't necessarily check but if i needed to make a claim could they dismiss it if it was uncovered the additional driver never used the car or intended to use it. We also live in different houses, will that make a difference, as from quotes i have done it doesn't usually ask for a second address, could i say she was living with me for insurance basis? What does it take to commit a minor and how do you afford it if you don't have health insurance?
My uncle and aunt are struggling with my 16 year old cousin who suffers from anorexia and she will go up to 3 weeks without eating anything. I am not kidding she only drinks water and then she will slowly puree some fruit into her water again for about a week or two before she binges for a few days and then goes back to this cycle of starvation. She looks pale and has no energy. Her eyes are sunken in and she hides in her room. My aunt and uncle are immigrants and they don't speak english that well. They don't have a lot of money or health insurance and I have no idea what to do but they are asking me to help! I've never dealt with this type of situation before and I'm just thinking they should call an ambulance and maybe they'll commit her to some state institution? I've been googling this and I come across all kinds of conflicting information. How can she get help in the state of California and is there any way if they are not insured to pay for her treatment? Is there any state aid related to extreme cases of anorexia?

""Can I fight an auto insurance company, to prevent my car from being declared a total loss, in California?""
Its an older car but only has a small dent. I understand that its the value of the car vs their estimate of repairs that they are basing this on, but they didn't include options like A/C, cruise control, power door locks and power mirrors and others when figuring its worth. They instead based it on an average car in my area. When doing the math the difference between fixing the dent and totaling the car came out to $18.00. Clearly the addition of the options would have covered that spread in my favor. I want to fight this because I don't want to have a salvage title. I was not at fault and the other parties insurance has already sent me a check I have not cashed nor have I signed anything. I want to know what I can do. And if I am stuck with the total loss, do I have the right to recover for re-title and re-registration charges and smog fees that are going to add up to a few hundred out of my pocket since I am keeping the car. Thanks for taking the time to read my question.""
Would it really cost me a lot more insurance?
I have a 93 camry and I'm trying to look for a new car to replace it. I asked my insurance company about the cost of insurance for a 2009 honda civic EX sedan 4 door and it was 536 every 6 months. Have a car but no insurance?
This is an answer I got about owning a car with no insurance and if my license would be suspended even if I turn in the tag and registration. It makes no sense as a lot of people have licenses for ID only and do not have a car (because they aren't allowed or can't drive): By law if you have a driver's license you are supposed to carry insurance whether you own a vehicle or not. It's usually called non-owner's liability coverage. Because of this law they would be able to suspend your license if your company cannot provide proof that you have coverage. This answer makes no sense. I won't say who provided it/they don't allow me to answer them though.

They’ve been separated for months, but when Veronica gets into some serious trouble, there’s only one person she knows she can trust.
With @moonoverbourbon
Ronnie:
Veronica sat in the bath until the water was cold, but it did nothing to ease the aches in her muscles, the burn of adrenaline, the terrifying anxiety. At least it gave her a chance to wash the grit out of her torn knees. They looked terrible. She missed her car, she missed her house, she cried every time she thought about Buster’s broken body at the foot of the stairs.
It had been years since she had looked up and realized wow, I am totally in over my head, but here she was. Alone. She stared at the burner phone sitting on the floor nearby, charging. She needed help, but she couldn’t trust the cops. Some of them, no doubt, but she had an uncanny knack of trusting the wrong ones, at least as far as this case was concerned. She let the bathwater run out, and washed her hair, wincing every time water sluiced over her forehead, where she was bruised, and scraped, or over her busted lip and swollen jaw.
The best thing to do would be to move on. But she couldn’t use a credit card. She’d dumped the car as soon as she realized they had to be tracking it, and that they had to know where the witness was – poor kid, on his own, at least – she hoped he was safe.
Because Veronica wasn’t.
Any other time she would have called her father, but seeing as he was out of the country, he would probably make ten phone calls and rain hell down on Louisiana, and she couldn’t afford that.
Clean and dry, Veronica sat on the edge of the bed, and used the first aid supplies she had scrounged to patch up her knees and wrist. Not much she could do about her lip, but she used a butterfly bandage to close her eyebrow up as well as she was able to. There was a small ice tray in the icebox. She emptied it into a plastic bag to hold against her jaw. Probably too late to make a difference, but it felt good.
She had clothes, bought from a charity shop attached to a church on the outskirts of (she thought) Albany. Jeans two sizes too big, and a soft flannel shirt that had made her think of Nik. It was going to have to do.
The touch of the flannel brought back floods of tears. She wanted him there. She needed him there. And there was only one person she could blame for the fact he couldn’t be there: herself.
Sometime later, Veronica stopped crying, and realized afresh that she couldn’t do this alone. Even logistically, it was insane. And there was only one person she actually trusted in the entire state. And he wouldn’t know this number. Maybe he would answer the phone.
She tried to keep her voice even, but it came in fractured sobs, from the moment the call connected.
“Don’t hang up. It’s me.” Sob. “I’m in so much trouble. I’m scared. I’m hurt.” Torrents of tears, sniffle, try to get yourself together, idiot. “Please. I know you hate me. I hate me too. I just… I need you. There are people after me. Please.” She covered her hands with her face, and let her body heave with the sobs she couldn’t contain.

Nik:
His shift had just ended, but Nik was in no real hurry to get home. He moved a week after he and Veronica broke up, another apartment a few streets over – this time above an antique store. He spent his days off doing odds and ends around the shop for a discount in the rent. This apartment wasn’t nearly as nice as his last one, but it had a balcony that overlooked Royal Street. It was nice…just…not the same.
He rarely went into the Garden District these days, no real reason to and running into her was always a real possibility. Nik wasn’t sure that he could ever see her again; he’d been mad, yes, but now he was just miserable. The things she likely thought about him…no, he didn’t want to think about it. Veronica probably thought him a monster – a criminal like the file said – and he couldn’t stomach the thought of seeing her look at him that way.
She had been the first woman he’d ever loved – and he had loved her deeply. Still did, if he weren’t trying to lie to himself.
Halfway around the block to his apartment when the phone rang, Nik glanced down but didn’t recognize the number. He hesitated – thinking perhaps it was a bill collector…or worse, his father. In the end though, he slid his finger across the screen to answer the call.
He froze in the middle of the street, only moving to the side when someone muttered under their breath behind him. Nik could hear her crying, and it made his blood run cold. But he didn’t hang up, and he didn’t say anything – simply letting Veronica finish.
“I don’t hate you.” That shouldn’t have been what he said first, but he needed her to know that. “Where are you? What’s happened?”  No, that could wait for later. Nik needed to know where she was; he needed to get to her. He was running now, taking the stairs to his apartment two at a time and throwing open the door without even a second thought. His car keys. He needed them.
Nik rarely drove around the Quarter, because everything was in walking distance. Since he hadn’t been visiting Veronica lately, the car had sat unused in the lot a half a block away. He’d even debated selling it…and was so very glad he hadn’t now. When he had her location, he was out the door – sprinting to his car. “I’ll be there as quickly as I can. Do not leave your room. I’m…I’m on my way Veronica. Everything will be okay, love. I promise.”
He hung up, hoping he could keep his word.
–––––
Ronnie:
Veronica barely managed to stammer out her thanks, and another apology, before she forced herself to end the call, and curled up against the pillows in the smallest ball she could manage. She didn’t deserve any of this. And wow, that was complicated; because no, she didn’t deserve to be hunted down because she’d done her best for a client, and she didn’t deserve to be forced to run from her home, and her dog… she couldn’t even think about that.
And she didn’t deserve Nik forgiving her the terrible things she’d done and coming to help her, either. Which didn’t mean she didn’t heave with relief at the knowledge that he was on his way.
She checked the time, and calculated how long it might take him to get there. Too long. She needed something to pass the time, and sleep wasn’t coming. She found a newspaper a few days old and tried to read it; she wished the burner was a smart phone so she could download angry birds or something; she paced, and she scribbled page after page of notes on a notepad that bore a totally different brand to the actual motel. These notes, she stuffed into a drawer. If she got herself killed, they were damning, and that would have to do. The thought brought with it a fresh torrent of tears.
She shouldn’t be bringing Nik into this. It was just too dangerous.
For a moment, she considered calling him back and sending home and just running. Eventually, she’d find a Greyhound or a… just, a different state. Maybe she could hide until her father came home.
Finally, painfully aware that her hands were shaking and she couldn’t look at it anymore, Veronica poured both of the tiny bottles of gin in the honor bar into a coffee mug and topped it off with a splash of tonic water. It wasn’t nearly enough to get her drunk, but she hoped it might at least slow her down enough to stop that tremor and make it possible to speak.
When she heard gravel crunching under a tire, she moved the curtain just enough to be sure it was Nik’s car, and felt herself choke again. She waited behind the door and opened it before he was forced to knock, closing it behind them both.
She drew herself to full height – all five feet of her – and forced herself to meet his eyes, forced herself to sound like a grownup.
“Thank you for coming,” she said, but it was hopeless. Those kind blue eyes were too much. She wasn’t even aware that she’d thrown her arms around Nik’s waist until she felt the tears soaking into his t-shirt. She clung for dear life, soaking in the solid warmth and letting everything roll back; the first few weeks when she’d hated herself and missed him every minute, the moment she’d accepted that she’d ruined everything for good.
“I’m just so glad you’re here. I’ve screwed up so badly, and I’m so scared. And I’m sorry. About everything I did. I have so much to tell you.”
–––––
Nik:
The drive to her motel was the longest one in the history of Nik’s life. Once on a lark, he’d driving from New Orleans to San Francisco; it had taken days…this was just a few hours, but it still felt longer. The speed meant nothing to him, nor did the thought of a speeding ticket or a trip to jail for reckless driving. All that mattered was getting to Veronica, making sure she was safe, and fixing whatever had scared her so badly.
Then finally, blissfully, he was pulling (almost sideway) into the motel parking lot. He had to physically make himself put the car into park and turn it off – the need to get to her was so strong.
Nik had never heard fear like that, and it had chilled him to the very bone.
Thank you for coming.
As if he could ever be anywhere else.
His arms were around her the second she hugged against him, hand against the back of her head to hold her close. Nik was whispering words of comfort, words on reassurance, and then walking her backward to sit on the bed. The last thing he wanted was her being this upset, and a good sit down and glass of water might be a start. “Come on, love. Sit. I’ll fetch you some water, and we can talk about what’s got you so out of sorts.”
He was trying to be as calming as he could, but Nik’s own heart was racing. Something was very wrong here, well beyond whatever personal issues they’d had leading to the breakup. This was not the reaction of someone who just missed a lover. Veronica was in trouble.
Nik left her only long enough to fill the cup with tepid water; it would have to do for now.  Then he was back at her side, one arm wrapped around her shoulder and the other offering up the cup of water. “Start slowly. Water first. Do not fret about what you feel you’ve done, Veronica. Please just tell me what has you so scared.”  And yes, she was scared. He could see it in every movement of her body.
“Whatever it is, love, I swear I will help you figure it out. I will not let you do this alone.” Nik pulled her closer, eyes closing as he kissed the top of her head. Gods above, he’d missed her so much. All it took was one touch to bring all that ache roaring back to the surface. “Talk to me, Veronica. Tell me everything.”
–––––
Ronnie:
Just having someone she trusted close by was a balm. The fact that it was Nik – that despite what she’d done, he would be here for her – it gave Veronica more than just hope for surviving this, but hope that maybe they could be… something, again. She would settle for friends. Anything. She took the cup in her shaking hand, and took a sip.
“I’m… very good at my job,” she started. “I mean, you know that. After what I did… you know I can find anyone I am determined to find. And a few weeks ago, this older couple came to me, just a boring everyday rich white couple from New York, no red flags. I ran a background check on them, nothing came up. They said they were looking for their son, who’s been missing two years. They said he stole from them when he ran and they’re worried he thinks they won’t forgive him. They gave me a heap of photographs, social media sites that haven’t been touched in over two years, the lot. They seemed a bit numb, but they said the cops told them the guy was probably dead and they were just chasing some half-assed lead that he’d been seen in Louisiana. I took a deposit and started looking.
“Weird thing is – I found nothing. Police say this guy never existed to them – he has no record, no speeding tickets, no missing person’s report. Which made me… crazy. I knew there had to be more to it, so I got creative. I mean, at that point, I started to wonder if this guy had run away from his parents for some very good reason, and my plan was just to talk to him. That was all. I would have given their money back. Happily. I found him. I went to talk to him. He was completely spooked, told me to go, wouldn’t answer a single question. And then…”
She started crying again. “Middle of the night, I wake up and there’s someone in my house. They killed…” Fresh torrents of tears. “They killed out dog, Nik. I got out, barely, in my pajamas, with nothing but my wallet. And then the next day I found out this guy is in witness protection. I blew his cover; he’s gone missing, but it looks like he ran. We’re both on a hit list. I’ve been shot at more in the last two days than I have in my entire life. I climbed into the luggage compartment of a greyhound bus and stole clothes out of the suitcases, enough to let me make some progress. I had to dump the care, I think it’s got a tracker in it, which is probably how they found the guy. There’s allegations of police corruption… the only person I trust right now, other than you, is the guy’s attorney. Who is hidden under five layers of security until the trial starts, because someone put a bullet through his window in Tuesday night.”
She took a breath. “Our dog, Nik.”
–––––
Nik:
His eyes narrowed, face showing the briefest flash of pain when she spoke of what she’d done. Veronica didn’t understand. Yes, he felt betrayed, but more than that – so very much more than that – Nik was embarrassed. There was no way he could tell her what really happened to him, so he would have to settle for her thinking he was some sort of criminal, troublemaker, and worse…that what happened to his little brother had been intentionally malicious on his part.
Nik listened to her story, letting out a breath when he realized what happened. This sounded like organized crime territory, and normally he would tell her they needed to go to the authorities. His blood ran cold at the words ‘police corruption,’ and he shook his head. “Your father. We should get in touch with your father straight away. If there is police corruption involved, he should know. Perhaps there is something he can do…”
Their dog.
Before he could even stop to second guess what he was doing, Nik had his arms wrapped around Veronica, pulling her close. “Shhh. Shhhh. We will figure a way out of this. I promise you. I won’t leave you alone, love. Shhh.” He was actually trying to comfort them both, an attempt to keep from shedding tears over the dog – and now over their situation.
“Do you think they know about me?” If not, Nik could get back into the city, grab some things for them both, and pull money out of the bank before anyone noticed anything was amiss. He’d call his job, tell them he’d had a family emergency and needed to take the two weeks holiday he was owed. That might give them time to figure something out, and if not… well, bartending jobs were easy to find.
Nik was not leaving her alone in this.
“I have enough savings to get us wherever you want to go. We can hide for as long as it takes. I’ll take care of everything…” He was so in over his head. Nik knew nothing about running from criminals, but he did know a thing or two about drifting. It wouldn’t be hard for them to disappear temporarily. “I’m not leaving you alone, Veronica. Tell me what I need to do, and I will do it.”
–––––
Ronnie:
Veronica shook her head. “He’s overseas. And he’d freak out, and make calls, and… I don’t think that would be safe for any of us. I’ll tell him, I promise, when this is all over, but I don’t want him involved when he’s too far away to do anything but call every cop he’s ever met and make them promise to track me down.”
Nik’s arm around here set off a fresh round of hot, painful tears. The dog. She’s never forgive herself for that. No, she’d never forgive them. It wasn’t her fault. It wasn’t.
It felt like her fault.
She tangled her fingers in Nik’s shirt, marveling at the way after months of distance between them he could still make her feel so safe and calm. Even the way he smelled seemed to bring her home.
But she needed to get herself under control. She sat up straighter, and reached for the tissues, blowing her nose and then drying her face. With a shaky hand, she reached for the mug of water. She’d have preferred it was vodka, but at the same time, she wouldn’t do anything that might risk slowing her mind down. She needed to be sharp. And she wasn’t alone anymore.
“I don’t think they know about you,” she said. “Or if they do, if they’ve dug deep enough, they’d know we haven’t had any contact in… well, I guess it’s… there’s a silver lining, right?” It didn’t feel like a silver lining. Veronica had been unhappy, the world had felt so flat and colorless. But if it meant that Nik had a layer of safety to cushion him – and if that protection could maybe keep her alive as well? – she’d take it.
Veronica forced herself to take a deep breath, and stared at a spot on the carpet for a moment. It might have been good to come up with a plan before Nik had gotten here, but too late for that now.
“We need cash,” she said. “We probably need to steal some number plates, just in case. From a car that doesn’t get a lot of use.” She shook her head. “I want to find Kevin, but… I’m afraid if I find him I’ll just blow his cover again. We need somewhere safe to stay. I don’t know where. A cabin in the woods is a great setting for a very quiet bloodbath, but a hotel in… I don’t know…”
Where could the drive to reasonably? Jackson?
“Thing is I’ve been violating secure hotels since I was sixteen years old, so I’m a little cynical about their ability to keep bad guys out. We need fake ID… I need hair dye. What do you think – red? Brown? I can’t think straight.” She wiped her eyes again. “When we leave, we leave together. And I think we should head north. If you can’t do this, now is the time to say it.”
–––––
Nik:
A silver lining. No, it wasn’t a silver lining. If Nik had been there, perhaps he could have done something…kept her safe somehow. These past few months had been horrible; she should have been planning their wedding, not worried about her life. It was another thing he could add to the list of bad decisions he’d made in his life – and this one could have gotten Veronica killed.
“I have cash, about ten thousand dollars in savings. I can have it by the morning. Clothing. Car plates, yes. I can do that too. I want you to stay here – out of New Orleans – and leave everything to me. I can be back before you miss me.”  Another sharp stab to his heart; Nik found himself wondering if she’d missed him nearly as badly as he’d missed her.
He reached fingers out and touched her hair; it was beautiful, and he hated to see it changed because of this. It was a necessity though, one that might help keep them one step ahead of whoever it was chasing her. “Brown. It’s further away from blonde than red. I think it would look lovely on you.” Nik pulled her a little tighter into a hug, before releasing her to stand. “I have cash in my wallet – a couple hundred dollars from weekend tips. Let me go and get the things we’ll need for the night, and then tomorrow I will head back into the city. We will figure this out, Veronica. I promise.”
Nik was back in a little under an hour with six bags in his hands. One was from a Chinese restaurant he’d passed on the way in and smelled of soy sauce and ginger. Noodles. Chicken. Vegetables. It would get them through the night. The others contained things from the market he’d found – donuts and instant coffee for the morning, water, her favorite bar of chocolate, and some brown hair dye that he thought would look good on her.
“I thought you might be hungry, and it was getting closer to dinner time. I…here.” Nik opened the bag and passed over a box of noodles with chicken and veggies, and then placed his own at the small table near the window. It was heavily curtained – safe – and he’d been extra careful to make sure he wasn’t followed.
He set out a couple bottles of water as well, and then sat down with his food.
“You look as if you haven’t had a decent meal in days, Veronica. Please. Come sit with me and eat? We can…talk about anything you’d like. Something other than this, and at least take your mind off of it for tonight. Tomorrow is a new day; we will worry then.”
–––––
Ronnie:
As he headed for the door, Veronica made a thousand pleas, offered a thousand warnings.
“Be careful. If you can see any security cameras, try not to look at them face on. Side profile, or look down at your phone. Don’t talk to anyone you don’t have to, I don’t want anyone to remember your accent.”
And once he was out of earshot, with her head resting on the door jamb: “I’m sorry. Please don’t go. Don’t get hurt. I shouldn’t have called. Thank you for coming.” And she collapsed on the bed again to sleep for another hour, relief dropping her like a rock into the ocean.
––
She dragged herself to a sitting position as Nik stepped back into the room, and dangled her legs over the edge of the bed as he passed her a box of noodles. Veronica was starving. Earlier, she’d been thinking that she should make an effort to eat something, despite the terrified churning in her stomach, but now, smelling this (and honestly? Just knowing she wasn’t alone anymore) she was starving.
Nik was so cautious. Veronica wanted to sit in his lap.
She crossed the small space, and poured herself into the chair with a grateful smile. She reached for the chopsticks – ouch. She kept forgetting she’d grazed the heels of her hands, and scraped her knuckles.
“It smells good,” she said. “I really haven’t. Eaten, I mean. Some beef jerky and chips, that’s about all. Gas station food. I bought one of those microwave subs, but it smelled terrible, and I couldn’t.” There, that was a useful thing to talk about. Veronica picked up a piece of chicken between her chopsticks and brought it to her mouth.
“I’ve missed you,” she said, as soon as she’d swallowed. “I’ve missed you every day. I went back to Neptune to see dad. He said I was an idiot. He was right. I shouldn’t have done what I did. I should have respected your privacy. I knew whatever you were hiding wasn’t going to make a difference to the way I felt, so it didn’t matter – but it did matter. I know. I…”
She put her elbow on the table, shaking slightly.
“We probably shouldn’t even be talking about this, should we? I’m sorry. Yesterday I thought I wasn’t going to last the weekend, and all I could think about was the fact that you’d never know that… that I’m so sorry I fucked everything up, Nik, and that I would have said yes that night. I would have loved to… to be your wife.”
Damn, she had tears welling in her eyes. She wiped them away.
“I’m sorry. You didn’t need that. I think we have more pressing issues. Right? Staying alive. Getting out of here.” She pushed a piece of broccoli into her mouth. “By the way you can’t take ten thousand dollars out of the bank in one go. Ever. The bank has to report that. It draws attention.”
–––––
Nik:
Nik knew, realistically, that they were going to have this conversation eventually. He’d dropped everything and come running to Veronica’s side because he loved her, and now that he was here in front of her once more there was no denying his feelings. But it did matter; what she had learned about him mattered because it was part of himself he’d been trying to bury since his eighteenth birthday.
He listened to her talk, barely touching his food. A bite here and there, but he couldn’t manage to actually eat anything of substance while Veronica spoke. “We have to talk about it sooner or later, Veronica. I…came…because I still care. I would not be here if I did not still…” Nik shut up, shoveling another bite of food into his mouth (the first one of any real substance) in an effort to give himself time to think.
“I missed you too.” There. That was easy enough to admit, and all too easy to say. It pained Nik how true it was; like she had claimed, he had missed her every day. Eventually, he’d been able to get back to work, to have minutes and hours when he didn’t think about her, but it had taken months. “You have to understand that the things you read…” He looked away, staring holes into the back of the ugly gold colored curtain. “The things you read are only his side of the story. My father does not care for me; those reports are his doing, his words. I…did not want anyone to see that.”
Because there was nothing worse than having someone you loved see how desperately miserable your life had been.
“I wish you could have trusted me enough…so that I may have told you in my own time.” Nik shrugged, going back to his food - picking his way through bits and pieces, but not really trying to eat.
I would have loved to be your wife.
He looked up sharply then, both at the words and the tears he heard in her voice. She was so sincere that Nik wanted to take her in his arms, and he probably would have to had she not abruptly changed the subject. There would be time for that later – time to sort all their personal issues out – but now they needed to focus on staying alive.
“Then I will take it out in small increments, over a few days. It will suffice…just means we need to stay in Louisiana until I’ve gotten it all. There are branches in Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Shreveport…it should only take a couple of days.” Nik took another bite. “Eat. Please. You look like you’re starving. We can tackle everything else tomorrow.”

Ronnie:
It was a punch in the stomach. No, it was two punches, to the kidneys. He missed her… and he wished she could trust him. Veronica dropped her eyes.
No, fuck this. Everything had gone to shit; if she couldn’t be honest now, when could she ever be honest?
“When I was seventeen years old,” she said, “I had enough money for four years at San Diego State University, a year at Stanford, and a semester at the Sorbonne. The way I figured it, I had another year to save… and scholarships to apply for. But I had that money.” She shook her head. “And then my absent mother reappeared. And I blew it all on a rehab stint she walked out on two weeks later. On her way out the door, after I threw her out and said I never wanted to see her again, she stole a ten thousand dollar check.”
Veronica wiped a tear from each eye, and made a valiant attempt to look at her food.
“My dad is amazing, but it doesn’t change the fact that I think parents suck. Theysuck. They screw us up, they lie, they don’t want to know who we are. I get it, I was an idiot. But the same way you wish I had trusted you enough to tell you… I wish you trusted me enough to see through horseshit like that.” She swallowed, hard. “You were a kid, Nik. Your brother ran out into traffic and he died. And it’s a tragedy that he died. But it’s a tragedy as well that you’ve lived a half-life ever since because your father couldn’t see it for what it was – an accident. Look at the police reports,” she begged. “Please. Even if after this week you don’t want to see me, read them. He might have blamed you, but no one else did. Not the police, anyway.”
She closed her eyes, and breathed.
“My best friend Lily was murdered by a man who was rich enough and famous enough to convince a jury of his fans that a fifteen year old girl could bring her death upon herself.”
She crossed her arms on the table, and stopped trying not to sob. The last few days had been too painful to keep holding it back. She ground the heel of her hand into her eye, and tried to get her breathing under control
“I miss you,” she said again, forcing herself to look up. “Please. Give me another chance. Give us another chance. If we survive this week, I promise you, I’ll never do anything this stupid again.”

Nik:
There was a tiny part of Nik (a very tiny part) that knew what happened with Henrik wasn’t his fault. It was often drowned out by the voice of his father and the haunted looks his mother gave him each time they were in the same room. Veronica could say what she wanted about the police reports and the place where blame truly fell, but it did very little to squash twelve years of guilt and pain. Besides, who was he to believe? Some random police officer who didn’t know him, or the people who were supposed to love him the most?
Nik had taken her hand before he even realized he’d reached for her. “I am sorry about your mother, love. The amount of pain inflicted by those who claim to love us the most often eclipses anything a mere stranger could do. Your friend, your mother…they were lucky to have such a champion in you.”
He was set to say more, but let her hand go when he could feel the tension building. Veronica was clearly upset, more so now that he spoke. Nik looked down the second her emotions got the better of her, so very guilty for causing her pain. The last thing he ever wanted to do was hurt her, but he had succeeded in spades at doing just that.
Picking at his food, he was at a loss for words until she spoke again. Nik wanted nothing more than to take her into his arms, to promise her that everything would be fine, but he was also not going to lie to her. Their lives were in danger, and he had no idea if anything would ever be alright again.
Give us another chance.
“If we survive,” Nik said, swallowing past the lump in his throat at the thought they might not, “then I will hold you to your promise of leaving my past in the past. When I am ready…” When he was ready, he would share the worst of it with her…but he wasn’t, and might not ever, be ready. “I love you, Veronica. I have loved no other the way I love you. I want you in my life; I want us. I want…but slowly, yes? Rebuild those bridges that we’ve destroyed. But yes…I would very much like to give us another chance.”

Ronnie:
It wasn’t what she’d meant to elicit when she’d shared the story – but listening to Nik talk like that, as hard as it was to hear… she’d craved it for so long that she clung to it like a raft, hoping the ride it the rest of the way out of this ugly, terrifying mess.
She met his eyes again. It almost hurt, he was so earnest. Still in pain. Veronica’s fault. She shouldn’t have picked at that scab, made him thing about the papers she had, his family, his brother… but she had, and here he was, still.
Veronica took a deep breath.
“Then let’s survive,” she said.
After tonight, there would be no more tears. She didn’t have time for them. She couldn’t afford the distraction, or the headache. None of it. She wasn’t alone anymore and if they got through this, she wasn’t going to be alone again, ever, because she was never going to do anything so stupid again. They could be happy. They both deserved it.
“And slowly is fine,” she promised. As long as they were in it together, slowly was fine. They’d been going slowly before, and it had worked.
––
Two hours later, with more food in her stomach than she’d had in days, Veronica stared at her reflection in the bathroom mirror. A short, scruffy, dark bob (admittedly, the scruffy was because cutting her own hair with paper scissors was not one of her many talents). She looked entirely different. Throw some plaid on her and she could pass for a student. Perhaps a student with red, swollen eyes, but a student.
She hung the towel, and pulled a t-shirt over her head, before stepping back into the room.
“Ta-daaaaa. New me,” she said. “No one would suspect a thing. Right?” Right?“I’ll get used to it.”
She sat on the end of the bed, and popped a couple of Tylenol out of their plastic bubbles, swallowing them dry.
“I don’t want to sleep alone,” she said, taking a breath, heart racing. “If it’s not too fast… would you just hold me? Maybe?”

Nik:
They were royally screwed, but Nik wasn’t about to add that amount of stress onto an already stressful situation. Food was good, hot, filling – probably more than Veronica had gotten into herself in weeks. Nik had the sudden, overwhelming desire to make sure she was taken care of forever. He wanted her somewhere safe and warm, somewhere that they could forget anything bad had ever happened between them.
Somewhere where she wasn’t in danger.
He got himself comfortable (well, as comfortable as a cheap motel room could ever be), kicking off his shoes and settling down in one of the hard chairs. They were going to attempt mending things – if they survived – but he wasn’t going to press his luck tonight. His full intention had been to let Veronica have the bed.
The full-on tiredness of his body didn’t stop his mind from going over every bad mafia movie he’d ever seen. Witness protection? Was that even an option? Should they call the FBI? The police? Nik wasn’t entirely sure that leaving her father out of the loop was such a good idea, but he was willing to at least give her the benefit of the doubt. But…what did one do when they were being chased by the mob?
The thoughts trailed off when she came back from her shower. The first thing he noticed was how sad she looked, and it broke his heart. Nik wanted nothing more than to comfort her. He was already up and moving as she spoke, took the medicine, and settled down on the end of the bed.
I’ll get used to it.
But god, he wished she didn’t have to get used to any of this. Nik stopped in front of her, fingers brushing against the dark bob of her hair. “I love it,” he said, earnest to a fault. “I do. You are beautiful, Veronica.” She was, of course, but Nik really wanted her to feel good about herself – none of this was her doing, and it was awful that she had to suffer.
“Come.” He pulled her to her feet just long enough for him to turn down the gaudy comforter and sheets. “Rest. I won’t go anywhere. I promise.” Nik waited for her to crawl in between the sheets, and then he joined her. His arm looped around her body, pulling her in as close to him as he could get. He brushed fingers over her hair, slow and rhythmic, trying to lull some bit of peace into her.
“It’s not too fast,” he whispered, leaning in to press a feather-light kiss to her forehead. “It’s not. I would love nothing more.” Nik kissed the crown of her head, his nose filling with the scent of cheap shampoo and hair dye  - and it still felt more like home than anything had these past few months. “Sleep, love. I promise to be here when you wake.”
Tomorrow, Veronica was going to get her shit together, and start thinking about a serious plan. Tonight, she planned to wallow in her terrible haircut and eke every bit of comfort from Nik’s arms as she possibly could. She wasn’t shy. She draped herself over Nik’s side, ear against his chest, their legs tangled, and closed her eyes while he played with her hair.
She hoped it wouldn’t be too difficult to fix when all of this was over.
“I just kept thinking, if they got me, I’d never get a chance to tell you… any of this.” It was a little easier to talk when she didn’t have to look at him, when she could think about how his heart was beating in her ear, instead. Her fingers played over his side. Not trying to start anything; it was barely even sensual, just reminding herself of what it felt like to be able to touch him. She chemical scent wafted from her hair as she shifted her head. “And I promise you, if we get out of this – no, when we get out of this – I’ll never do anything to jeopardize this again.”
––
Veronica slept better than she had for some time. It was partly exhaustion, she was sure. Partly the relief of not being on her own in this. But mostly, it was Nik’s even, deep breathing, the warmth of his body.
For a moment, when she opened her eyes, the last few months were forgotten. But not for long.
She woke early. No surprise there, having gone to bed so early. The sun was barely out, and Veronica stared at the window for a long time. She felt stronger, capable. And utterly determined. She could feel Nik pressed against her back, his arm over her waist, warm breath on the back of her bare neck.
She’d found the witness before. Granted, he was pretty far underground, now, but she could find him again. Or she could find a way to get a message to him. Or think like the bad guys. Smartest option for them was to snatch him near the courthouse. So, get the venue changed. Nik was right. They needed her dad, and his contacts. Someone rock solid in the FBI, someone she and Nik could trust.
Veronica rolled over, and let her fingers drag over Nik’s face.
“Are you awake?” She leaned in for a kiss, momentarily disoriented when a lock of her own dark hair fell over her face. “I’m feeling ready to kick some ass. I’m angry, I’m motivated, and I want to get home with you, so we can see what happens next. I have a few ideas.” She reached for Nik’s hand. “Mostly, they involve not dying, not letting the witness die, and drinking champagne when all the bad guys go to jail. First things first; we’re calling my dad.”
