Ramona's Guilt

So I wanna talk about a bunch of the stuff in Scott Pilgrim Takes Off and how it looks at, answers, and smooths over some generalities in the other two Scott Pilgrim narratives (mostly the comics as the movie didn't do much with Ramona). More of what I'm writing under the cut. Spoilers for all three but most pressingly for Takes Off.

So overall the frame here is going to be on how much guilt Ramona carries over her actions, and how much amends she goes for in the new narrative of Takes Off. And how much that matteers.

See, in the other two versions Ramona 'dumps them and leaves' is painted as a singular through line, a universally identical action across all her relationships. That isn't the case here. Each relationship is painted as 'Ramona leaves' but how much that matters varies.

Going to go through each Ex in order:

Matthew Patel

So it is painted as both 'a relationship that could go somewhere' but also 'dude you knew her in middle school.' Ramona doesn't apologize to him, doesn't accuse him of kidnapping Scott, or really interact with him because 'middle school.'

To Matthew's credit as a character, he gets a massive growth arc through finding a passion he loves rather than obsessing over a girl he knew when he was twelve. His 'take over Gideon's empire and follow his off Broadway dreams is a good avenue for his character to grow.

Lucas Lee

Ramona makes it clear she still cares about him, and has always been rooting for him she just- ran off. And that her doing that did significantly change him. And that part she apologizes for. It's also clear she mostly questions his guilt because of the league, and not because she thinks he's evil (referencing back to his 'evil for being a sell-out, I guess' from the books).

He's not the nicest person, but she sees though his facade. And barring his tossing a child onto the roof of a car to steal his skateboard, he's pretty much harmless. Lucas Lee is a lot of attitude but nothing really behind it.

But he did need to hear that Ramona cared about him, and was sorry.

Todd Ingram

Todd is in a weird place, one is he's not in the montage of Ramona running away from what she loves. So he's more of a rebound when she got scared with Lucas. Two he's always been in love with Envy Ramona was just 'there' not 'there for him.'

Third he's Gay. The story kind of makes it pretty clear he just didn't know that about himself. (Which is fine, Todd doesn't have two brain cells to rub together.)

So she doesn't apologize and Ramona didn't really do anything for him.

Todd is also in a weird place where he's less 'Ramona's evil ex' as he is 'Punchable Avatar of Envy Adams.' His major element in the books is as Envy's current boyfriend to deal with Scott's 'the big ex' problems.

Roxie Richter

The most deserved and needed apology of any in the series. While Ramona didn't mean to hurt her, because she wasn't aware of how much their thing mattered to Roxie. It. hurt. her.

So Ramona needed to apologize, more than any other ex.

This also changes Roxie from the 'safe ex to run back to' (because Ramona doesn't count her as a real relationship, in the comics) to 'terrifying relationship Ramona wasn't sure how to deal with' (because they got so close and Ramona runs when she feels scared). It's overall a very positive change to how this relationship worked.

And like with Lucas, post-apology this Ex is no longer evil.

The Katayanagi Twins

So Ramona doesn't really... interact with them at all. The ending montage shows she did love both of them, but she also dated them at the same time because they were, well, fuckboys. So it's less a 'she hurt them' as it was a 'she is the karma they deserved.'

The twins, overall, are painted by their nature in the future of being overall good guys who don't care about all this. I would like to see more of them but they aren't very useful narratively to Ramona's plot. Because they're useful to the whole 'how do we make this new Scott Pilgrim story go Brrrrrr.'

Gideon Graves / Gordon Goose

His inclusion in the final montage of 'running from love' is weird, because I do think a major element of a potential Season 2 is Gideon's kidnapping of ex girlfriends for a complete set. This is what I assume was in that vault from Ep 2, the one Matthew couldn't blast into.

Still, Ramona didn't apologize to Gordon, she chastised him and threatened him should he treat Julie the way he treated her. Which is deserved, Gideon is the worst. He doesn't get an apology because this time Ramona was right to run.

So what does this all Do!?

What it does is keep Ramona's character flaw (she runs when things get complicated) without making it seem like running is always the same, with the same weight, and the same responsibility on her. Of the evil exes, while six out of seven are no longer evil. Ramona was only needed to fix two of them.

It means she's a flawed person, as is the theme of this show. But not some secret heartbreaker. Just another scared little girl with intimacy issues.

And it means when a relationship was going to end on someone else's terms, having her chase down that relationship like a dogged detective makes her less a prize at the end of a story, and more her own person.

And that's a pretty great change.

the voyage home: a heist movie

okay i was watching the one with the whales again (because it SLAPS) and i realized that it’s basically a heist movie?? i mean, it has the premise of a time travel movie, but it’s a heist movie about STEALING WHALES and bringing them to the FUTURE.

bonkers.

so i’ve been assigning the crew oceans eleven-type heist roles. i would draw them but alas, ‘tis not in my skillset. if anyone wants to draw this, i would love to see it.

Jim Kirk: The Face

i mean, pretty self-explanatory, i think. kirk’s putting in the WORK to get those whales. he’d be better at it if spock didn’t keep calling him “admiral” and using colourful language improperly, but he’s not his husband’s boyfriend’s colleague’s keeper, is he?

Nyota Uhura: The Hacker

good on comms, super fucking smart, definitely the brains behind the “break into the nuclear wessels” plan. she’s carrying that team. what’s the first thing that happened to chekhov when they got separated? he got arrested, then fell off a cliff. enough said there. god, she’s so pretty.

Hikaru Sulu: The Driver

i mean, the man gets to fly a helicopter! also, he’s in charge of yelling out what warp factor they’ve reached, so i think that counts.

Pavel Chekhov: The Thief

listen, i didn’t say he was good at it. but he did help uhura with the nuclear wessels plan, and he was surprisingly cool under pressure, despite falling off a cliff during the ensuing chase.

Montgomery “Scotty” Scott: The Brains

i can’t give this to anyone else. scotty made a whale tank! and figured out how to recrystallize dilithium using ‘80s tech! and he used a keyboard! fucking superb, you funky little engineer!

S’chn T’gai Spock: The Muscle

i don’t know how to properly articulate my thoughts about this one, only that i know it in my heart to be true. spock swims with whales and nerve pinches a loud punk on the bus. yes, he does math, but the rest of the time he is exuding peak himbo behaviour. i love him.

Leonard “Bones” McCoy: The Conman/Master of Disguise

this is very similar to the face, except mccoy’s better at it. look at those costumes! fabulous. he gets into character SO well here, and at the plexiglass factory. we STAN a competent king.

I was struck in reading The Talisman by the references to King Arthur. There aren't that many, but there are enough to make one sit up and take notice. It made me think that in many ways, this is a rewriting of the Arthur-Guinevere-Lancelot story, with the larger-than-life King Richard filling Arthur's shoes, Edith as Guinevere, and Sir Kenneth, our beloved himbo, following faithfully in the steps of the chief himbo of them all, Lancelot of the Lake.

Sir Kenneth is a slave to chivalry but will throw it away for his lady love, who puts his own honor above her own and is horrified when he loses his honor in her name. They are kept apart by the king, not only because Edith's connection to Richard means that Sir Kenneth cannot wed her, but because in losing his honor Sir Kenneth has also tarnished Richard's. And in his anger at Sir Kenneth Richard almost loses his kingdom and his life to treachery within his own ranks.

Happily, Sir Walter Scott did not want this to end as a tragedy, so the noble enemy keeps Richard from making the ultimate error with Sir Kenneth, and the barrier keeping Sir Kenneth and Edith apart turns out to be nothing.

It is possible I am reading too much into the story, but given the heavy over-emphasis on honor and chivalry (and the subtle sub-text gently skewering them), and the much larger-than-life character of Richard, it does seem reasonable to think that Sir Walter may have been rewriting the tale of Arthur, Guinevere, and Lancelot as he felt it ought to have gone, and giving all three of them their happy ending (or as happy as it gets for Richard).

THE JACKET (2005) dir. John Maybury 🌸

(hey my first non-bl related gif!)

The narrative is a time slip fantasy in which a Gulf War veteran who suffered a death or near-death experience while on active service returns to the United States where he is blamed for the death of a policeman, and incarcerated in a hospital for the criminally insane. Subject to experimental treatments there, which involve him being shut inside a morgue casket while tied in a straitjacket, he eventually learns to travel through time and is able to offer help to various people.

i watched this in high school one lazy afternoon with my mom and became obsessed. i don't think it did well? or was really on anyone's radar? but Keira Knightley is fucking gorgeous in it as is Adrien Brody - both of which i had massive crushes on back then. it's definitely HEAVY and darker, obviously, and has a bit of an open ending but i eat that shit up.

i've watched promare an embarrassing amount of times, but hey, it's actually a little queer so there's that! the synopsis is just a drop in the hat of what the movie actually is. we love anarchist rebels and advocates for equal rights (and enemies to lovers between a smol angry rebel and a big lovable himbo.) small note - we lost Galo's english VA, Billy Kametz, last year to his battle with cancer. he played a huge role in a lot of my favorite shows and games and it really broke my heart.

DRAGONHEART (1996) dir. Rob Cohen 🌸

Sir Bowen, an English knight of "the Old Code", mentors Saxon prince Einon in his ideals to make him a better king than his father Freyne. While suppressing a peasant rebellion, rebels ambush and kill Freyne. Then a young peasant girl named Kara accidentally wounds Einon's heart. Einon's Celtic mother Aislinn has Einon taken before a dragon and asks him to save the boy's life. The dragon makes Einon promise to be a just ruler with honor and replaces Einon's wounded heart with half his own. However, Einon proves more oppressive by enslaving the former rebels that killed his father and forcing them to rebuild a Roman castle. Einon also has Kara's father, who led the insurgents, blinded. Believing the dragon's heart has corrupted Einon, Bowen swears vengeance on him and all dragons by hunting them down.

listen, i'm old okay? i watched this obsessively when i was a kid. i didn't own the VHS, i'm not really sure why? but anytime it was on tv i was glued to it. i think i eventually did record it onto a vhs.

MILK (2008) dir. Gus Van Sant 🌸

In 1972, Harvey Milk and his then-lover Scott Smith leave New York for San Francisco, with Milk determined to accomplish something meaningful in his life. Settling in the Castro District, he opens a camera shop and helps transform the area into a mecca for gays and lesbians. In 1977 he becomes the nation's first openly gay man elected to a notable public office when he wins a seat on the Board of Supervisors. The following year, Dan White kills Milk in cold blood.

i watched this just as i was coming to terms with my own queerness. i wanted to learn more about queer history and this movie came out at the exact perfect time for that. i was a freshman in high school, i'd never heard of Harvey Milk before, but my mom had and she encouraged me to watch it. it got me doing a lot more research into queer history and learning where we came from so while the movie may not be perfect, may not be wholly accurate, i thank it for that.

TITAN A.E. (2000) dir. Don Bluth & Gary Goldman 🌸

"Titan A.E." takes place in the distant future, after Earth has been obliterated by a mysterious alien race known as the Drej. Cale is a human teenager who has been given a mysterious map by his father, leading him on an unforgettable journey.

i am nothing if not an absolute slut for Don Bluth movies. that man illustrated my childhood. as i got older my mom told me about Titan A.E. and said it was a must watch for my nerdy ass. she was correct. it's not the perfect movie but it's a great look at what Don Bluth and Gary Goldman could've done if we'd considered "animation for adults" back then. we're finally getting somewhere with it now, and i like to think we have them to thank in part for that.

also fun story my husband met one of the animators for this film at a party where a lot of people were doing a lot of drugs and he gave him his card AND MY HUSBAND LOST IT

Xisumi stared at the guy, “What?” he asked as the guy went to explain himself again. “no no, I heard you the first time, but what?” he wasn’t sure, the audacity of this guy to come into his server and tell him he needs to ‘put down’ the ‘hybrids’ around him.

“They are monsters, they hurt people, just nasty things.” the guy tried to defend himself with a nose wrinkle to Scar and Cub and their Vex features.

Grian looked over with 3 of his eyes the others watching Pearl and Bdubs to make sure they didn’t cheat. Bdubs however looking over confused also, here he was just enjoying his sun patch to listen to the audacity of this..

“Who is this guy again?” Ren asked from where he was getting some cool whip from the fridge. “And what’s with that stench and audacity.” he’s ears flicking on his head and tail trashing.

Xsiumi looked from his friends now all staring then to the representative, “Either you are actually a Admin Representative, or Scott was blind to your racism against hybrids.” The ‘officially’ man sputtered, “I am just speaking honestly truths, I heard this place needed to be check on, but the fact you have...” he motioned to the group, “Those things here says you need more than a write up.”

Gemini hummed lightly, “I’ll go call Scott.” she said leaving the room.

“Yeah that is not gonna get you far at all here buddy.” Grian snorted a bit, “Scar, Cub, you guys wanna...?” he said motioning to the guy with his wing.

Scar wrinkled his nose, “Uhg, no, he’s not even junk food worthy. smells too sour.” Cub also looked disgusted, “I’m trying to cut back on... whatever that is. And I brushed my teeth already.” he told Grian.

Ren nodded in agreement to that, “I get that.” he he wrinkled his nose as well. Guess they would just wait on Scott to come get this man.

“but I’m not above experimentation.” Doc said cracking his knuckles, “I need someone to go through another death cycle.” he grinned, smoke coming out of his mouth... well guess that’s also and option.

“No way, have you seen Impulse and Bdubs? Etho really thought he’d get in the way of that, they will be the first for sure.” Xisumi told her with surety in his voice.

Doc scoffed from where he was tinkering away, “All of us are horny canaries here, and speaking of canaries, my bets on Team Rancher. Tango isn’t known to be the ‘take it slow’ type and Jimmy is just a himbo.” eh mans had a small point there.

“I can’t be the only one who is just invested in general.” Stress commented eyes glued to the screen wide and tense.

Gemini looked at it also, “Only one bed, that’s a Bingo!” she said finishing filling out one sheet.

Grian looked over at that from where he was eating a cookie that Scar gave him as a sample. “Hm?” he asked over the cookie in his mouth. Swallowing the mouth full he frowned, “Can’t be me, Ren’s the king after all, don’t kings like to think themselves gods.”

Ren however shook his head, “Oh no, I’m not getting involved, the king is off duty for the next... however long it takes you to take care of that.” he waved his hand as Grian gave a small glare.

“Well Scar here is the one with the cult, so maybe it’s him.” Grian said pointing to the wood elf.

Scar however smirked, “Same could be said about Mumbo, but I assure you, it’s not a call for the Vex.” he teased lightly to Grian’s pout.

Huffing Grian finished his cookie, “Your cookies are bland.” he said but did grab another as Scar snickered watching his friend leaving the room.

“You’re trying... summoning magic?” Tango asked with a frown to Bdubs, “For what?”

“Grian gave me the spell and said he couldn’t get it to work, so he’s convince it’s a hoax, but I will make it work... just needs some adjustments.” Bdubs nodded to himself as he finished the circle.

Ren however rose an eye brow, “This seems like a bad idea.” was all he said looking at the ingredients used. “Do you know anything about summoning?” he asked a bit on edge.

“There would be my first, but how hard can it be?” The glare hybrid asked with a grin.

Ren and Tango took 4 large steps back at that, which was a good call.

Something told them Grian did that on purpose.

My brain’s been on fire about EmpireSMP and specifically EmpireSMP all night. It’s not unusual, but it’s definitely more active than normal.

Anyway, now I’m thinking about the Seablings and their respective partners.

Specifically when the Seablings are swimming around when their respective partner comes to visit, and the very different reactions to that.

For example, we have:

Water-reluctant Elfman with Catboy tendencies and his Dogboy Cod Husband

Scott (after having figured out how to control his powers) would walk alongside Jimmy on top of the water. The water freezes beneath his feet, melting behind him. Jimmy swims eagerly around him in circles, talking excitedly like the golden retriever of a codman he is.

Scott keeps his pace a bit slower than normal that way he doesn’t trip over Jimmy, who has a tendency to constantly swim up in front of him and just stop suddenly that way he can look at Scott while talking.

Scott refuses to get in the water and get his clothes wet, especially in the swamp water that’ll surely ruin his clothes. That doesn’t mean they don’t get ruined anyway by a soaking wet Jimmy climbing out of the water and hugging him. (Scott complains for the longest time about it, but he always lets Jimmy hug him anyway.)

On the occasion Jimmy does tug Scott into the water, Scott always glares at him through his wet hair. Jimmy’ll always laugh and Scott will tackle him into the water. The next hour is spent with them just splashing each other until they come to a truce. And then Scott will complain about his wet clothes, but he always ends up sitting on the side of the swamp in the sunlight, letting his clothes dry naturally while he watches Jimmy swim around.

On the opposite end:

Blue Axolotl Ma’am and Her Super Soft Himbo Husband

Joel constantly allowing Lizzie to tug him into the water. After the first few times of it happening, he’s now extremely excited by the chance to swim with Lizzie.

He’s not the best swimmer in the world, and the fact that he doesn’t even change out of his king’s outfit when he gets in the water doesn’t help. Lizzie teases him about it, but guides him around by holding his hand or grabbing his arm.

And I just think the image of Lizzie and Joel giggling while Lizzie tugs him into the ocean with her is adorable??? She’s always makes he’s safe too and gets enough air, but Joel’s absolutely willing to brave the ocean for her anytime.

Joel and Lizzie going on ocean adventures together because Joel’s just so delighted to see more of Lizzie’s empire, but also her life under the waves. It’s so different from life on the shore and it’s just adorable how excited he is. He’s always delighted to learn more about his fish wife.
