"We prepared for this moment. We hoped human decency would prevent it from happening, but we prepared, and it doesn’t make it any less maddening now that it’s happened. The overturning of Roe vs. Wade is a devastating blow to body autonomy and to basic human rights in the United States. Just as we felt when a draft of this opinion first leaked last month, we are angry and we are frustrated.

Across the country, we’ve already seen attacks on trans kids and the control they have over their bodies. All of these attacks are connected. Anti-choice policy will have an overwhelmingly negative impact on the most marginalized members of the LGBTQ+ community — people of color, immigrants, people with disabilities, people with limited financial resources, and people who lack access to proper healthcare will undoubtedly suffer the most. 

We also know that this is the moment when LGBTQ+ people will rise and we will fight. Together and for each other. This is a scary and uncertain moment, without question. But it is also a moment when leaders will be born out of necessity. At the It Gets Better Project, we will continue offering a platform, a community, and resources to amplify those voices who are fighting for change. 

As we said last month and repeat again here, we will fight to ensure the next generation has the authority and confidence to speak out against threats to their right to live freely and unapologetically. LGBTQ+ youth need our support now more than ever, and we will not stop fostering queer joy, resilience, and love. 

Stay proud, speak loud, and never stop fighting for what’s right.

i met an older woman the other day at a protest for reproductive rights.

she saw me holding the ace and pan flags & even asked about the flag on my shirt! she said she wasn't really up to date on the new flags, so i explained them to her & she said she liked the trans flag on my shirt!

then i asked if she wanted any flags & she said, "sure! if that's okay!" & i said, "okay do you want one of each, or a specific one? i can give you a rainbow one too" (she had a large rainbow flag tied around her neck) & she said, "no, it's fine! maybe a pan one. i used to think i was bi, but i figured out that pan fit way better. i just like people." & i smile & said, "of course!".

she then took it from me thankfully and wore it in her hair.

that moment was so healing for me.

🐉REVIEW RATING: 🔥🔥🔥🔥/5 How has it taken me this long to read a T. Kingfisher book?! Nettle & Bone captured me with its opening passage, but then held my interest with each character added to the traveling party. I adore Marra with her social awkwardness and determination to see each difficult task through to the end. As Marra and her new friends plot to kill an evil king, and the characters trust enough to share details of their lives, the story explores the concept of heroism. What makes a hero? Is it the seemingly impossible tasks they overcome? Their willingness to sacrifice themselves for the greater good? Or could it be simply the decision to choose goodness when you have a capacity for evil. Kingfisher’s tale of a woman whose value is determined by her fertility, is especially timely. The fight for reproductive rights has always been of high importance, but with the recent overturn of Roe v Wade, this story hits more emotionally than it may have a year ago. Nettle & Bone centers on a quest for vengeance and the rescue of a beloved sister. But at its heart, this book is a battle cry for reproductive freedom. With heavy themes and dark settings, Nettle & Bone still manages to be a light read with humor spread throughout. The traveling party is rounded out with the affectionate Bonedog and a chicken “with a demon in her.” And the banter between characters is affectionate and wry. They remain lighthearted despite pursuing a quest they believe is destined to fail. In the author’s note, we learn this novel began as a short story. I hope I can find it online, as I’m curious to see how this tale evolved. I also want to know more about the blistered land, visited briefly.
