How different Marauders era characters would feel about Taylor Swift.

Sirius- Obsessed with Taylor and her music. If she has one fan, it's him. If she has no fans, he's dead (like all the people he loves). Acknowledges that she does some questionable things but always makes excuses for her. Was really upset when Taylor and Joe broke up. Gets annoyed when people don't listen to Taylor's Version. Collected every CD, vinyl, and piece of merch that he could.

James- Outwardly pretends he just likes the music, but actually really relates to a lot of the sadder songs (eg Tolerate It). Sings the sweet, romantic songs to Lily/Reg all the time.

Remus- Was always annoyed at how overplayed Taylor's songs were, so hated/disliked her songs. Reluctantly agreed to go to the Eras Tour with Sirius and listened to the setlist in preparation and actually really loved a lot of the songs, but kept pretending to hate her because he didn't want to admit he was wrong.

Peter- Wasn't a Swiftie but liked a few of her songs. Didn't really understand why she was rerecording her albums except that it was important to her and the Swifties.

Lily- Major Swiftie, related to loads of songs and loved almost all of the rest. Went through everyone's playlists and replaced everything with Taylor's Version.

Mary- Was a Swiftie but not massive levels of obsession like Lily or Sirius. Really related to some of the songs, liked how a bunch of others sounded.

Marlene- Gatekept her favourites, judged Swifties based on which albums/songs they liked.

Dorcas- Loved Taylor's music, memorised as many of her songs as possible. Critical of Taylor's actions but still loved her and her music. Didn't want to give any money to Scooter Braun etc by streaming non-Taylor's Version songs, so listened to Reg's CDs if she wanted to listen to something that wasn't Taylor's Version.

Regulus- Obsessed with every song. Refused to even have non-Taylor's Version playing near him, even in public. Was the type of person to say "You can't be a Lover stan if you don't like Afterglow" etc, especially to Sirius. Collected the cardigans and CDs.

Pandora- Huge folklore girlie. Not a huge pop girl, but loves the country/alternative albums.

Evan- Didn't count himself as a Swiftie, but all of his friends are obsessed with her so he's grown to like her music. Doesn't tell anyone what he thinks about different songs for fear of being murdered by the people he loves (like James and Lily on Halloween 1981).

Barty- Doesn't tell anyone outside of his friends that he likes Taylor, but secretly loves all of her music, especially her pop albums.

DEAD POETS SOCIETY - MODERN AU HEAD CANONS

Charlie Dalton and Knox Overstreet - The Secret Swiftie - And the most obvious

He definitely listens to Taylor Swift on a daily basis - Prolly lives and breathes the 1989 era - Now as for the question of how he expresses that? He is either that really quiet one until Knox walks in on on him screaming But Daddy I love Him - He will not let him forget it

Knox is the MOST obvious TS fan amongst the poets - Loves Lover and has cried with Todd over The Manuscript and loml and YOYOK and Back to December and All too Well (10min) - Neil has not forgiven him for that one night when Todd came into their dorm, crying about how The Black Dog is Wolfstar coded (The Poets are so into ATYD and like the Marauders lore)

Knox Overstreet is drunk and cries over Chris while listening to Laufey

Being the hopeless romantic he grabs a bottle of something and puts Laufey on loop on Spotify and cries about Chris - Charlie and Cameron in the dorm have to either stuff their ears or actually go and manually shut of Spotify to stop him from crying. Knox proceeds to cry without Laufey and mumbles the lyrics to himself until he falls asleep

Todd Anderson lives for Hozier analysis - Loves The Oh Hellos and The Crane Wives

Todd Anderson is the biggest Hozier fan (DUH). He spent much of his free time sitting down and breaking apart Unreal/Unearth with his copy of the Inferno at his side. Neil and Todd go out to stargaze and they blast The Oh Hellos and The Crane Wives on shuffle and Sufjan Stevens

Meeks has destroyed everyone while playing Monopoly and Among Us

People underestimate him too much - well the joke it on them! He has made Cameron storm off and Todd huddle in a corner during Monopoly. Monopoly Monday is not exactly a thing - but when it is everyone rallies to pin him and Charlie together (who wins occasionally due to dumb luck)

He trolled everyone while playing Among Us and is the last to die.

Pitts collects vinyl records and/or CDs

He is definitely into The Smiths and The Beatles and Queen and he loves to collect records and CDs sometimes for aesthetics - But he is in charge of bringing the playlist to the party cause he is not going to overplay any artist (Knox overplayed love ballads and got together with Todd and cried over glasses of cheap wine). Has the most unpredictable music recommendations, but never disappoints.

Cameron vibes with period dramas

Cameron loves the good period dramas, and has read Austen, Tolstoy and E.M.Forester. Wants to be loved but isn't Knoxious desperate. He loves Downton Abbey and relates too much to Thomas and Mary for obvious reasons. Had a crush on Mr. Darcy at some point but now will not shut up about Alec Scudder from Maurice. Charlie had the brilliant idea of scaring him with a massive paper cut out of Colin Firth's Darcy. What ensued was a two hour manhunt for Charlie Dalton. Cameron still has the paper cut out and the poets have grown to appreciate its presence.

Neil loves Hamilton and Les Mis

That's it - he just does - Loves Lafayette and screams the lyrics of Helpless at any given time - Tried to fancast the poets as the cast - And tries to get everyone to sing One Day More (Knox is almost always Marius and is hella dramatic - Todd and Neil make up the Enjoltaire dynamic - Cameron likes Javert)

The Poets Love the Marauders

Charlie flexes the Sirius James energy but he's such a Regulus to Knox's James, who sees Chris as the literal Lily Evans (they are the folklore love triangle change my mind) . Neil and Todd (Wolfstar in a different font). Pitts and Meeks stan GRANT CHAPMAN and Cameron lives for the Black family line drama. They've all written fanfics or literal poetry about them.

Keating refuses to own a kindle

He loves physical copies of books too much - Cannot fathom the idea of owning a kindle

Charlie loves 80s coming of age films

It's his whole jazz - LOVES FERRIS BUELLER and can and will quote The Monologues in The Breakfast Club. Cried over Stand By Me, and has not recovered.

Neil and Pitts and Meeks love Fullmetal Alchemist

It was Christmas when they read volume 4 and none of them have physically recovered from it - IF YOU KNOW YOU KNOW - Todd and Charlie had to make hot chocolate and listen to their ramblings and deal with Knox at the same time (who was crying over Chris yet again)

Chris and Ginny and Todd and Pitts and Charlie are in a band together

Knox wants frontline tickets, and Charlie has the time of his life selling the those tickets to literally everyone else. Todd doesn't sing and refuses to and is the lead songwriter - Ginny is the lead drummer and Pitts plays the keys. Chris is the lead singer and Charlie plays the sax and some random instruments on the side. Neil is the supportive boyfriend and Meeks buys them drinks after, and Knox drinks and pours his heart out to Todd.

TTPD Thoughts

First: The Bad

- tbh I was disappointed

- It was kinda boring; like she wrote out all these lyrics to write them and slapped a beat on it as an afterthought

- People like Taylor swift for two reasons: she’s an amazing lyricist and her songs are catchy. This album had neither. The lyrics sounded ai generated (don’t get me wrong some lyrics were great, but others not so much) and the beats were BORING; there was no variation (and before you go “oh it’s sonically cohesive” her other albums like folklore and reputation were sonically cohesive while also being interesting)

- It was more for her than the audience, they were good songs and you can tell they were her coping mechanisms but I don’t think I would listen to any of these just to listen to them

- At first I was ecstatic that it was a boy ke album, but now I think 31 songs was very much a bad decision. Rather than having a normal size rlly good album, she had a huge kinda meh album

- I have a love hate relationship with I Can Do It With A Broken Heart bc the song was devastating when you know the context and I relate to it a lot, but the lyrics sounded VERY ai generated

Now: The Good

- OMG ITS SO MARAUDERS CODED

- “The black dog” “Peter” “The prophecy” “you smoked then ate 7 bars of chocolate” It’s ok Taylor you can just say you’re Mskingbean89

- I loved Florida!!! and Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me sm

- My tik tok favorites folder for Hunger Games, Percy Jackson, and Marauders has literally doubled in size since this album came out (and it only came out two days ago as of when I’m writing this) (Taylor swift works fast but editors work faster)

- I loved Cassandra bc I’m a Greek mythology nerd

- “I’m having his baby- no I’m not but you should see your faces” I loved that. It was hilarious

- I also rlly liked The Bolter, the chorus itched my brain and it also kinda reminds me of The Last Great American Dynasty or Mad Woman in a way I can’t explain

- The album was very much a feminine rage album and I’m here for it

Conclusion

I’ve got a love-hate relationship. I am very much a swiftie, but idk if this albums for me, and that’s ok bc people have different tastes. But I am very much looking forward to all the angsty edits that are going to come out of this.

5SOS5 came out today, so I want to recommend the song “Older” for James and Lily (or Wolfstar, the song has an interesting perspective when applying it to ships from the Marauders’ era)

So I spent a lot of time this morning going through this album, because while 5SOS has never really been a go-to thing for me, I'm always open to every band and new albums until I figure out if I like what they've put out or not. So welcome to my review (that you did not ask for, but i'm on vacation, so this is what's happening now). And since you brought it up, we're going to add in ships/characters from the perspective of these songs, at least the way I see them.

So this album isn’t necessarily my thing. It's a bit too 'pop' for my tastes most times. I have to be in the right mood and headspace for something like this. HOWEVER, I did find songs I liked, and I can relate almost all of them back to fandom. It's sort of like listening to folklore all over again, which is interesting.

COMPLETE MESS - The song itself is okay, but I'd like not listen to it again. But I definitely get major Wolfstar vibes from it, because if you go by what we know from canon about what happened during the First War with the distrust, it fits pretty well.

Easy for You to Say - Good song; great lyrics. Again, likely won't actively seek it out for another listen, but the Regulus feels I get from it are strong. I keep seeing him around the time Sirius left and after. I've always had this idea that Sirius maybe tried to get Regulus to run with him, that he tried to 'save' his brother from the oppression of their family, and Reg wouldn't. So there's Reg, all alone, now the heir, something he doesn't want but feels he has to live up to. He's being pushed towards the side he agrees with but also doesn't, warring with himself, seeing and hearing Sirius in everything he does. And ugh.

Bad Omens - I actually like this one a lot. It sucked me in, which is nice. And this album gives me a lot of First War vibes, so once again I'm relating this back to Wolfstar, specifically from Remus' pov (or alternatively, possibly Jegulus as they lead towards what we know as canon)

Me, Myself, & I - Eh. Not my favorite. But I suppose it could give Sirius vibes from certain perspectives, but I'm finding Peter in it, with all his betrayal and what I've always felt was maybe a struggle over what he'd done to someone (James) who had always been there for him after everything happened.

Take My Hand - This one was great! I love the lyrics in it and the mental pictures it paints. And I see James in this one, as the war is building, as things begin to slip away and through his fingers as he tries to hold them so tightly but it's just not enough.

CAROUSEL - I have mixed feelings, but I think I like it. Once again, the lyrics are fantastic and they really capture something. But I think I like it because I relate it to Sirius. And I'm not even going to elaborate on that. It's just a Sirius song.

Older - Soooo...not my favorite. I've actually listened to this before because I saw something about it, and it's sort of eh to me. It tells a good story, I won't deny that. And yes, the Jily vibes are phenomenal (also Wolfstar). It could honestly relate to almost any relationship happening during the First War era (like Dorlene, for example).

HAZE - Not one of my favorites, but I see Sirius in this again. Specifically, his relationship with James (platonically, for my perspective, because i just can't with the prongsfoot of it, i'm sorry).

You Don't Go to Parties - I. Love. This. Yes, yes, yes! The lyrics are just aldksjfalkjf. And this is Wolfstar. Could be from Remus' pov as Sirius begins to pull away during the First War, but I'm seeing it more from Sirius' as Remus disappears to the werewolves more and more and Sirius has no idea what he's doing, as that distrust begins to mount higher and higher even as he struggles with all those emotions and feelings he still has.

BLENDER - LOVE LOVE LOVE. And again, Wolfstar (when it reached the 'howling at the moon' line i was sunk).

Caramel - This one might be my favorite, honestly. I love the entire feel of it. And while I'm not all that into them (though i'm beginning to come around and starting to consider seeking them out a little more) I'm getting strong Jegulus vibes from this, just from what I've seen and know about how they're approached in fandom, and my own little views I've steadily taken on. Imagine them, together, the war mounting, things are leading in a canon direction, James pulls back and gravitates to Lily. And there's Regulus just sort of drifting between everything else, waiting to see how it all plays out.

Best Friends - This one is fine. Not the best song for me, but I like it okay. But it's definitely a Marauders song to me (mainly from James' pov and applied to Sirius more than the others, but they're there).

Bleach - Don't. I can't. This is just...painful. I love everything about it, but it hurts. It sinks me right back into The Demons We're Made of and Unbreak the Broken. Remus pov after everything started to fall apart and the aftereffects of it all. I cannot. Don't make me go there again. That thing broke me and it's still breaking me. I can't think about it too much.

Red Line - Yes, this. Just this. I love everything about it. And it's Wolfstar again (could also relate to Jegulus if you want to take it that route).

Moodswings - This one is right up there with Caramel and Bleach for me. It gets me in that deeply hurtful place. And this is a Sirius song, at least for the way I view him. I've always seen Sirius as bipolar, along with a large portion of the rest of his family (Black family insanity). So this song is just perfect for that, and relating back to his relationship to Remus, mostly during the First War, but even before that, because I think Sirius, during his lows, would probably see and invent issues that weren't actually there.

Flatline - Likely wouldn't listen again, but this is a Jily song, no question.

Emotions - I really like this one. The lyrics, again, are wonderful, and they really sink in. And to me, this relates back to Sirius again, mainly about his family and the pressure that was there from them, always weighing down over him.

Bloodhound - This one has some interesting lyrics, and it grows on me the more I listen to it, but I'm still in that in-between place with it. But once again, this is a James song. James with a few sections focused mainly on Sirius, because they're soulmates in the brother sense. They see all about each other and support one another through everything.

TEARS! - God, yes. Give me all of this. I want to soak it into my bones. This song was made for Remus. This is his song after Halloween '81. No contest.

marauders era characters and their favourite taylor swift album (also what album you should listen to based on your fav!!) — a character analysis (of sorts):

james: fearless (tv)

i mean, fearless meets hey stephen meets you belong with me meets the best day meets that’s when is literally, genuinely, HIM. he’d like the slight country-ness of it all, due to how it’s only given in small portions but is still there. the theme of falling head over heels in love but it not working out would go so well with him and his character </3 he’d listen to it like almost every day.

sirius: lover

if he was asked this, he’d die, and probably go for reputation. a safe option. but he doesn’t know himself like i do. he’d be screaaaaaaming the lyrics to ‘i think he knows’ whenever he could, he’d cry to lover, relate to the archer, daylight, and afterglow on a spiritual level, and never get sick of cruel summer. like. ever. that’s just how it is!!! lover was the first album he listened to after lily introduced it to him and it’s therefore very special to him

remus: evermore

i know like literally everyone would say folklore because of cardigan and peace and hoax etc etc but?? to me evermore feels more like him. none of the songs necessarily describe him, but marjorie and ivy and cowboy like me and ‘tis the damn season feel so like him. also, this might be because i cannot help but see wolfstar as a very very loving couple and gold rush and long story short and willow are like invisible string’s sisters. evermore is folklore’s younger sister as well, and sort of shifts between being more and less emotionally intelligent than folklore so it just fits him to me.

peter: speak now

there’s very little he knows better than revenge. but also, he feels like such a romantic to me. i know he’s so often headcanoned as aro and/or ace, but i’ve never found myself agreeing, as you can now tell. i feel like he would not handle change well at all and songs like never grow up and even (in my opinion) back to december portray that. plus he’d just love the genres😭

lily: 1989

where do i even BEGIN. clean is a huge reason for it, since she’s had to let go of so many shitty people in her life, but she also seems like such a dreamer and wished to move to a huge city when she grew up, and therefore fell in love with welcome to new york very easily. she loves a messy but true love kinda trope (literally all the songs on there), with hints of purity here and there (you are in love), but she also loves people being able to get proper mad and a lil unhinged about things (blank space, bad blood). besides. she’s very pop. in the best way. plus, she’s the hugest swiftie of them, of course she chooses 1989.

marlene: folklore

she knows how to feel pain, she knows it well. but she does it with so much hope. like, yeah, maybe today was exhausting and the past week really sucked and life feels awful. but that’s not where it ends…? it can’t be. and she feels very reflective. and very romantic. and SO passionate, about both things and people she loves, as well as herself and her own potential. i guess that’s a bit of a controversial marlene characterisation but, no, i don’t want to give her that mean and tough lesbian trope.

dorcas: reputation

very protective of things and people, but in a truly romantic way. she knows how to stand up for herself, maybe not as intensely as the narrator of rep, but the passion is there for sure. and she’s SO romantic, her fav off the album is probably call it what you want. dress is very dorlene, dancing with our hands tied is very dorlene, call it what you want is very dorlene, and in my opinion marlene fell first but dorcas fell harder and that fits the whole purpose and message of reputation very well to me.

mary: red (tv)

just being in the middle of a transition from country into pop is very mary, i can’t explain it but it’s just her. her loving red is very complimentary to lily loving 1989 as well. she’s probably sobbed to every single song on the album for different reasons in different occasions, and i think by as early as the first minute of state of grace she was just…. completely sold. this connection isn’t one i can really analyse or explain or justify, it just makes tons of sense to me, how it’d be her complete fave from day one. begin again, treacherous, the lucky one, holy ground, babe…. ah. it’s perfect for her.

Okay I have worked out what I think the Marauders favorite Taylor Swift albums are. Going to include Regulus and Lily because I love them!

James Potter is Lover because he is a complete and utter hopeless romantic. He screams to I think He Knows and London Boy but his favorite song would be Cornelia Street because he has a fear of people leaving him.

Sirius Black says his is Reputation because it’s the most rebellious out of all of the albums but he secretly screams Enchanted in the car with Speak Now on shuffle and thinks of Moony when listening to Mine.

Remus Lupin is between Red and Folklore because he sometimes just likes to sit in his sad. He has I Almost Do and This is me Trying on repeat. Stay Stay Stay is the song he relates back to Sirius.

Peter Pettigrew favorite is Fearless because he wants to be like that. He wants to be fearless. He just has Tell me Why because I feel like he relates to the lyrics a lot because his friends though they love him make jokes that they can say to the others but make Peter feel belittled.

Lily Evans favorite is Evermore because she likes how freeing it is with songs like No Body No Crime and Long Story Short but her favorite is Tolerate It cause it reminds her of her relationship with her sister

Regulus Blacks favorite all together album is 1989 he liked that she did a complete genre change and he to him he related to a lot of the songs like Out of the Woods and I know Places but his all time favorite Taylor Swift song is All Too Well the ten minute version.

How i think the marauders spent Remus's birthday!

they woke up at 9.30 am which believe me was early for them Remus usually woke up around 7.00 so it took a lot of convincing on the marauders part to make him sleep in.

Sirius and James were the first ones to wake up. Of course they had to start the day of with pranking remus. They quickly opened their prank closet which basicly was a closet that they kept all their prank supplys in. They did have to sacrifice some space for their daily clothes for this but they were fine with it. They got out some loud sirens that they had bought three weeks prior and started screaming "happy birthday moony!!" while the sirens went of.

Remus woke up immedietly he was used to waking up to any little noise durning the night after all those years of transformations he was... paranoid, he was scared that he would hurt his friends,the only people that actually care about him.Well at least he thought but he didnt have to worry about this noise it was his friends.

He quickly woke up, "i- guys you didnt have to do this why did-" "Moony shut up" sirius interrupted "its your birthday now shut up and come with us"

They all got dressed and headed down stairs Remus was following the rest. They were walking torwards the great hall, tgey entered and Remus quickly spotted what was happening. The boys had kept a corner for remus and they had decorated it. Gosh he really loved them, the boys must have sensed his shock so they dragged him there. They sat down started eating and chatting, a couple minutes later Lily, Marlene, Alice and Dorcas decided to join them it was chaotic Marlene and Dorcas were cuddling while Marlene was arguing wıth sirius about who was better at skating, James and Lily were fighting over the Nutella jar and Peter was just chatting with Alice about Frank and how she had missed him, he was always at quidditch practice. All of a sudden sirius screamed " FOOD FIGHT" everyone was caught of guard but they went along with it. Even students from other desks were joining them now the whole great hall had joined them now. Remus wasn't someone that got in trouble ever so often but it was hella fun. They continued the fight untill Mc gonnagal and Dumbledore CAME and started screaming at people Sirius quickly sneaked them out and they were fine even tho they were pretty sure everyone knew they were the ones that started it. They were 8 people now and they had plans. "Okay Moony now we have a ton of things planned for today but for the first one get in the car" Sirius said. Remus was suprised but oh well they got in the car. Sirius was the first one to open some songs.They were all upbeat funk and except for him and Marlene no one really liked it so Remus took over and blasted the whole Folklore album (a/n also queen taylor im so proud she won album of the year wooo) he just loved the album and who could blame him? About 10 minutes before they arrived at the destination Marlene blindefolded remus so it was a suprise for him. The car stopped and they all got out guiding Remus. They entered the building and Remus immedietly understood where they were. The smell of buttery popcorn and sweat. They were at the rollerskating ring. Remus loved to skate. He used to skate when he was a little child and it just turned into a hobby. They all went up to the cashier and got their shoes. Remus and Marlene basicly ran to the ring. Sirius and James ran after and Lily Peter& Alice were pretty calm. They were just learning to skate while Remus was showing off to Marlene and Sirius and James were racing.

They skated in the rink for about an hour untill Sirius had a genious plan well.... they were probably gonna get in trouble but they didnt care. They were going to run out of the rink and skate.. well basicly they were going to steal the skates but they would bring them back.. right?

They didnt think much and just skated out the rink ignoring the shouts of the guy runing after them and eventually giving up. They blasted music from the speakers they had brought.

Remus took some photos of Marlene Dorcas,Lily and,Peter cause they practically begged him

After skating around the town for hours they all were tired so they decided to go eat in this little caffe that Lily had told them about that was also a arcade they put on normal shoes and made their way there. It wasn't too far away so they walked slowly chatting and laughing hard.

By the time they were standing in front of the caffe it was already 2pm. They entered the caffe and were blown away by how beautiful it was. There were colorfull lights everywhere with the smell of french fries surrounding the entire building.

They sat down at a nearby table and ordered a bunch of food to actually eat this time. They all warned Sirius not to make a mess this time. He was posted but not for long. The food arrived and they ate it in no time they didnt realise how hungry they were since they all were having a lot of fun. After eating and chatting they made their way to the back of the restaurant which was the arcade

They were like little kids running around getting tickets and playing games.

The time flew by as they played every game possible, Remus smashing everyone in Mario Cart. "NO MOONY STOP IT THIS IS RIGGED THERE IS NO WAY POSSIBLE THAT YOU JUST BEAT ME NO I REFUSE" Sirius was screaming getting looks from angry parents and eventually getting kicked out.

They all were laughing so hard as they left the building knowing damn well that they wouldn't be able to attend this place ever again. Remus thought that the day was over and he was so happy. The day had been perfect, he loved his friends and he couldnt have asked for anything better than this.

"now moony for our last activity go and put your swimsuit on" James told him and he must have seen the confusion on his face so he explained "we are going to swim in moonlight dumbass now quick get dressed!!" Remus was still confused but he went along with it. Everyone got dressed and they started racing torwards the ocean.The arcade caffe was right across the beach so they were lucky. Sirius and James were the first ones the jump in and start splashing everyone. They were complaning tho this was typical Sirius and James behaviour. Eventually everyone got used to the cold water and started having water fights, jokingly drowning each other, getting on top of each other.

They swam untill it was around 2 am and they did get many complains from the people around but they didnt care! Even the technically the day and Remus's birthday was over that didnt mean they would stop.

Lily and Peter quickly started a little fire while Marlene and Alice walked back to the car to get the marshmellows that Sirius had prepared beforehand. İt didnt take long for Lily and Peter to start the fire, with the use of some matches of course.

They got started with sticking their marshmellows on the sticks they brought when suddenly they felt water dripping on them, it was starting to rain, well they didnt really care and watched as the rain started to put out the fire. They grabbed their marshmellows and started running around town blasting the ablum melophobia by cage the elephant.

'maybe life wasn't that bad after all.'

Rules: name ten favorite characters from ten different things (tv, movies, books, etc.).

Thanks for tagging me @bibliophileiz ; exactly the sort of distraction I both needed (and that my current concentration-level is capable of) at the moment! Hard choices ~ especially as many of my favorites come in pairs! ~ but my top ten today...

Princess Bride: Inigo Montoya

Which character don't I love in Princess Bride? Even Humperdink is such a pitch-perfect villain. But while I'd choose Westley if I was picking a date... Inigo's the one who captures me, every time. It's not the desire for revenge itself that's compelling; it's the love for his father - the heartbreak, the dedication, even the defeat and the rise again (the "you told me to go back to the beginning scene" comes to mind as one that stays with me and is probably a huge influence on things I think of but haven't really written yet...)

Harry Potter: Sirius Black

Yes, that's a gif of Midnight Mark from Pirate Radio, because I very much mean the book version (sorry, Gary Oldman!). Is anyone following me surprised by this one?

I'm so fascinated by all of the Marauder era characters, both as they are on the page and the hinted-at aspects of them explored in fandom; love Lily/James... but Sirius is the Harry Potter character I think of first (honorable mention to non-HP Edmond Dantès, as I love Count of Monte Cristo and think much of Sirius' plotline owes that a clear debt). Aside from being a tragedy, aside from all his great lines, what a *fascinating* character and twist, in a way, on the fairy godmother plot in his first book 3 appearance (getting Harry the Firebolt, his permission slip, etc). I could say SO much more but will avoid writing an essay.

Smallville/Superman comics/adaptations: Lois Lane

Always a favorite character for me, but Erica Durance in Smallville is my favorite version. I feel like they gave her a bit of Marian Ravenwood (specifically in the outdrinking the frat boys scene) and leaned into the modern comics "army brat" angle so well.

Anne of Green Gables: Anne Shirley.

With honorable mentions to of course Jo March, other fellow aspiring writer Emily of New Moon, and Pippi Longstocking, other fun redhead of my childhood reading... Anne, and all her drama and dreams and mishaps, wins out as most relatable for me. Book heroine of my heart.

Speaking of childhood book heroines...

Star Wars: Jaina Solo.

Look, this is partly to save me between picking a favorite between Leia and Han (a dilemma which has haunted me since childhood, in part because, guiltily, it's Han), and serious honorable mentions to Mara Jade and especially Jyn Erso here... but Jaina was *everything* I wanted in a heroine as a girl. We're talking about the Young Jedi Knights series here... though I actually started with Junior Jedi Knights featuring Anakin Solo (oh Anakin Solo 💙💔)... going into the New Jedi Order, as I stopped following the EU so passionately around there.

Jaina, who is brash and so her father's daughter but has a harder time seeing she's also her mother's, the Rogue Squadron pilot, the wielder of a purple lightsaber, the mechanic... my inner little girl will never quite forgive the sequels for failing to give me a Solo daughter (sorry, Rey; I still think Daisey Ridley was pitch-perfect Jaina Solo casting... and honestly part of me considers the sequels the "weirdest Jacen & Jaina fan fiction ever" 🤷🏻‍♀️)

BtVS (out of the whole Whedonverse really): Buffy

My other favorites in the show are really also doubles/foils for Buffy: Cordelia Chase & Faith. But the first episode of the show I ever saw was "Anne" and so I've always known I would watch an entire show with just Buffy (... I would also watch an entire show of her friends dealing with her absence, but that's more about *plot* than character). I love the concept alone of Buffy's character - overturning the blonde damsel in distress trope by making her what monsters fear - but I mostly just love her; favorite Chosen One ever. “No weapons, no friends, no hope. Take all that away, and what's left?"/"Me."

...and now it gets very hard, where my early choices were more instinctive and now I keep thinking of others and can't decide. Tempted to make a bracket (I feel like Sirius and Inigo have some crossover, but how could I put them against each other)?

But ("if you had to choose, if you had to choose") to get at some of my other favorite character types and embodiments thereof...

2010-me would never believe I'm going to say this, but: Jaime Lannister.

I'm usually not a villain girl... but of course, he isn't a villain, though he starts out cast in that light. Slightly annoyed I’m picking Game of Thrones (yes, even grouping the books in that, as post Storm of Swords, I remember thinking "this could really benefit from the tightening the show will likely give it" ahahahahahahaha whoops). And yet. Where did that "came for the Starks; stayed for the Lannisters" quote come from? I feel very attacked by it.

"The things I do for love". The boy who wanted to be Arthur Dayne and somewhere along the way became the Smiling Knight. The reveal that he's not (or at least so much MORE than) who he seemed : perhaps not the comparison you'd expect but ah yes that Mr. Darcy twist always does it for me. So much character development (let's not speak of how the show ended, but still).

The motives, in particular: I love the Spike backstory reveal in Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Fool for Love, and in many ways I think Spike and Jaime hit the same note for me. He’s definitely a character that stays with me. Also, he hits that "golden boy" type I also like but in a *very* interesting way (and oh no now mentioning golden boy is making me think of Aron and Cal in East of Eden, I don't have room to even consider them on this list but know I love them both...)

Speaking of golden boys (also I cannot believe this is the only character from a musical I'm choosing, and Eponine’s a character that haunts me too, but...)

Enjolras.

Michael Maguire is not a golden Enjolras but was my introduction to the character and still a (the?) favorite. Love both book & musical Enjolras in different ways. But inspiring idealists with the light of rebellion abalaze in their eyes...? Facing death & despair still waving the flag? Ah yes. Top ten, 10/10.

Favorite detective out of all mysteries really, but especially from the Nancy Drew & Hardy Boys Super Mysteries: Nancy Drew.

An icon. Why is it so hard to have a good Nancy Drew adaptation? (The new TV series lost me with going with actual ghosts - I love my supernatural shows, but I don't need that with Nancy Drew.) Detective characters tend to be some of my favorites; honorable mention to Shawn Spencer from Psych here, but I was reminded in watching that recently (as Maggie Lawson, Jules on Psych, had once played Nancy Drew in a Disney movie! ... that I need to find and rewatch as I remember almost nothing about it) a) how much I love a good mystery and b) that Nancy is the OG.

Speaking of icons... out of all the folklore & mythology I love, it’s clear what character I love best: Robin Hood.

Oh, I love my Arthurian knights, but I love all Robin Hoods more. Trickster heroes, rob-from-the-rich-and-give-to-the-poor-justice, true love... cheeky 1952-movie Robin Hood is my favorite - both favorite Robin and favorite Marian, and their childhood-friends-to-lovers romance is the epitome of that trope for me! - but I also love the fox version...and am very alarmed at the prospect of a CGI remake of that; I'm sorry but that is not live action... and also Errol Flynn! It has to be Robin. If this was a ranked list (it’s not) he’d probably take #1.

My ten slots won out to other characters, but also I love every Tamora Pierce character and if I had to pick one, it would be Daine Sarrasri, YA fantasy heroine out of all magical girls (and yes over the lady knights; sorry Alanna and Kel; Daine had wolves for friends). Also shout out that I love a LOT of characters named Marian, aside the already-mentioned Maid Marian -- Marian Ravenwood (& Indy!), Marian ‘the Librarian’ Paroo (& Harold Hill!), X-Men’s Rogue (usually named Anna Marie when a name’s revealed, but a Marian in at least one version, & her own thief Gambit)... to quote Thin Man, “You got types?”

Random Werewolf Fact #41 - Werewolf/Monster Hunters

So I’ve been asked this a lot: what about werewolf hunters? What were they like in folklore?

Well, I got a big bomb to drop on you for that question...

There weren’t really any “werewolf hunters” in folklore.

Yep, the act of “werewolf hunting” in and of itself and especially as an entire profession comes absolutely 100% from popular culture. So why is that?

Well, mostly because in folklore werewolves weren’t considered huntable. They weren’t basically pests like they are in so many settings today.

They were rare individuals, people with stories, and were almost never that “monster marauding the countryside” you get from modern things.

And they definitely, absolutely were never, not even once, some kind of massive infectious plague of rats that ravaged an entire kingdom.

The idea of putting together hunters with werewolves didn’t really mix in folklore, especially considering, when werewolves became seen as less mystical and purposeful and instead were just evil in the Early Modern period (as well as when they came to be seen as madmen and people with diseases), they were generally considered just insane people who needed help, and they were put into monasteries to get the mental help they needed, not killed like animals. They were put there to give them protection from people who’d want to kill them for being crazy, and to teach them how to be civilized. It actually worked pretty well in some cases, since the monks treated them like people instead of shunning them. You can read detailed, even day-by-day, accounts of some clinical lycanthropy patients, written by the monks themselves.

Anyway, it just wasn’t really a thing. Folklore isn’t a monster movie. It was a lot more than that, which I’d love to see werewolves become again in pop culture.

(Side-note: I am not saying I hate all werewolf hunters in everything everywhere, and I in fact write about monster hunters [not specialized just for werewolves] a lot. Like, a lot a lot. A protagonist in my novel series is one, in fact.)

Now you may ask, but Mav! What about the Beast of Gevaudan!?

Yes, some people took to hunting the Beast of Gevaudan. However, I do not count the Beast of Gevaudan as a proper werewolf legend. It has 0 of the hallmarks required, and the creature involved was only speculated to be anything even remotely like a wolf - it was not described or depicted as such in most any of the contemporary sources we have related to it.

And besides which, the people who hunted the Beast of Gevaudan were essentially big game hunters, random people looking for money, soldiers, and just - people. They weren’t specializing in any way. This wasn’t a profession for them. It wasn’t like calling in the werewolf hunter guys armed with silver, like in the Red Riding Hood (2011) movie or anything (loved that, though, by the way), like some of the false “sources” would have you believe.

So there weren’t really “werewolf hunters” in folklore. What about other kinds of monster hunters? Did we have those?

Yes, those were a thing! Vampire hunting was actually considered a workable profession in Greece, believe it or not.

Perhaps more than this, though, the idea of undead hunting was an actual thing that had official laws in some countries.

In fact, during the Anglo-Saxon period in England, a law existed to allow people to drive wooden stakes through anyone suspected of being undead. As Matthew Beresford points out in his incredible book (which you should pick up, if you like vampire folklore!), From Demons to Dracula, it is important to note that this law specifies undead, not vampiric - the concepts of what we consider a vampire today and what was a “vampire” back then, especially with that specific word, were very different. And that law? It was only repealed in 1823.

There’s so much more to say about monster hunters and undead hunters, but more on that later! I am, after all, planning a series of vampire facts very soon.

So, ultimately, werewolf hunters weren’t a thing folklorically, that’s the bottom line. Not as professionals, especially. But most importantly, werewolves weren’t really seen as a common monster to hunt and stamp out. There was a lot more to them than that, and they were often knights/shamans/great warriors/wanderers/guardians, etc., or some combination thereof, not a random encounter killing people here and there.

Werewolf hunters are just another symptom of how heavily concepts of werewolves as a whole have changed going into modern day, pretty much always for the worse and the negative. And boy, they sure have changed a lot.
