To know you grew up. To know you have grown up and will continue growing up to be older than them, than him. It was comfortable knowing that the world might end at seventeen. But now you're older, older than that. Older than the comfort characters you thought you fit in with... It's a subtle, bittersweet ache in my chest. I'm happy, but also sad. I want to cry, but also laugh.

I'm going to watch dead poets society tonight for the first time. I already know a major spoiler for it but I'm emotional as hell so wish me luck 🙃

we've been told in our cinema courses that no shot/angle etc. is accidental in films; everything is done for a reason. which is why I've been thinking about these two shots as quite telling of neil's feelings:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it's not just the heart eyes! from the direction of his gaze to the positioning of them, you can tell that neil is literally looking up to todd; in his eyes, todd is very special. he knows that todd is an interesting person and he admires him. it's so cute 🥰
also, in the scene below, we can see them from a low angle, as if we are on the floor and they are spinning around us frantically. it's like they are flying, breaking free. they are elated and powerful. they don't have a care in the world.

I just thought these scenes are very cute. I want to rewatch the film and try to be extra observant so that I can add to this post! I hope you might find this sort of analysis interesting :) I certainly do because I think if these scenes were shot differently, we would get a different understanding of neil and todd's relationship
(btw, it's like 3.25 am. hopefully, this post makes sense)

so i'm in the middle of a dead poets society breakdown/spiral/hyperfixation/etc, and something I really love about the movie is how nothing changes, if that makes sense. it's a story about a system, and it says, "this is the system. this is who it hurts. the end." there's no happy ending. there's no fix. the characters are left broken by the corruption around them, and by the time someone stands up for what's right, it's too late, the damage has been done, the people have been hurt, and nothing can undo it.
i think that's what i find so fascinating about it. in a lot of modern movies and tv shows, when confronting conformity and the systems that perpetuate it, they tear it down somehow. they make history, if that makes sense. dead poets society isn't history. nothing astronomical happened, truly—it's just a blip in time, a sequence of short events that really weren't important to anyone or anything. it won't be in any history books. no one will remember it fifty, sixty years down the line.
but it happened. and it mattered. and now that you know, now that you've been warned, it's time for you to make history:)

Mr Keating is the teacher everyone deserves in their life. He's the one who's able to show someone that they can do anything and be anything they want

Dead Poets Society headcanons Pt. 19 camping edition
Charlie suggested it, because of course they did
Pitts shot down the idea immediately, but Meeks convinced him
Neil and Todd saw it as a good excuse to cuddle
Cameron agreed with Pitts, it seemed like a terrible idea
Knox wanted to invite Chris, all the Poets shot this down
They were expecting to have separate tents for pairs. They did not
They all ended up in a 10 person tent, which was just not big enough for the 7 of them
Charlie and Knox move a lot in their sleep, they were kicking people all night
Todd couldn’t sleep on the cold hard ground so he ended up basically using Neil as a mattress, Neil did not mind
Meeks and Pitts were smart enough to bring an air mattress, and they refused to share
Cameron couldn’t sleep at all, he ended up leaving the tent and star gazed for a bit outside until he ended up falling asleep
Knox woke up at 4am, and somehow managed to make so much noise in a tent, that he woke up Charlie, who then, out of annoyance, woke up Meeks and Pitts. Neil and Todd managed to sleep through all of this
Charlie took a picture of them cuddling, they looked cute
