I stayed up all night thinking about how depressing Rays life is.

Since he was just a toddler he had been gearing up for death his whole life, he never really found joy in much things because he knew he'd lose them. when he did find a good interest he never gave up on it.

When he read, he only did it to improve his value so he could save Emma and Norman, the two people he'd always loved with a true passion.

He did everything I could to prepare for the escape.

Became Isabella's spy

Gathered things for 6 years to disable the tracking device.

He also planned to burn himself alive.

Ray believed that he wasn't worthy of love because he stood by all those years watching everyone he loved die and couldn't do anything about it.

And also because his biological mom was the one killing all of them.

He did everything he could to make the escape perfect for Emma and Norman.

After the escape plans seem to be going smoothly, Ray's own mom snaps emmas leg and reveals that Norman will be killed in a day.

Ray watches as the plan he's worked on for 6 YEARS fall to ashes (no pun intended) and has to watch as norman refuses to escape alone, and is shipped out.

(When ray reunites with him years later, Norman has been traumatized by the demons so badly that he turns genocidal)

Then on his 12th birthday ray tries to light himself aflame to distract isabella and let everyone escape. When Emma saves him he's shook. Then she slaps some sense into him and tells him that his family won't let him die, and that they're all going to escape together.

After the escape ray admits that he "lost." to Norman and will continue to life for his family, and protect them no matter what.

Thinking about how Felix, who didn’t get a frog mark on his neck, actually took the biggest risk in Strikeback

something i noticed about jj in season 3, that i haven’t really seen anyone bring up yet— why does he sleep OUTSIDE of his house? like yes we know he’s been evicted, but we also know from when the pogued first got back from poguelandia that jj can still break in through the window. he has a bedroom, a bed, all that based off the fact that nothing really seems to have changed/been taken from inside the house yet. So when sarah goes to his house looking for place to stay and notices the pillows/blankets set up on the porch or when john b pulls up to the maybank residence to tell jj his big johns been kidnapped and jj is trying to sleep on the porch, it’s clear jj has been Choosing to sleep outside on the porch. i’m curious why that is? it’s clearly a subtle thing meant to say something about his character, and i would assume that being inside the house itself is too traumatic so he opts to stay outside. or maybe because his bedroom is hardly even his since he spent so much time avoiding his own house in general? idk, i’m curious to hear what your take is on this, bc i think it’s super interesting

I've been wondering about that for a while, and with JJ it's always hard to figure out what the writers are doing on purpose and what Rudy's bringing to the table, but I think this one is more purposeful.

I think there are a lot of ways you could interpret this, and I don't think it strictly has to do with JJ's house itself. Although I'm sure JJ's house is a sore spot to begin with, and it's a place where he's never felt safe and protected, so he doesn't like being in there too much to begin with.

But I also think it's a lot to do with JJ feeling cornered and stifled in any closed quarters in season 3 - it's not only at his house that he sleeps outside, he also wakes up on the porch couch at the chateau in 3x08, so it looks like he doesn't sleep inside there, even though by that point big john is gone, so there's plenty of room inside. And we've seen him crash on the pullout before, so we know it's not always been the case. But this season, he seems to spend very little time inside, and I think it has a lot to do with Poguelandia, because that island was a little bit like JJ's own personal version of heaven, and when they were on the island they slept outside. So it might be his attempt at finding some of the peace he found on the island in the obx.

Another reason might have to do with JJ feeling like he always needs to be alert and ready to run at any second. From the first episode, we see JJ at peace with never going back to the obx because he believes he has so much to run away from there. When he and Kie discuss going back in episode 3, you can see all the things he's worried about him that are waiting for him - the restitution, no job, no parents. He literally says arrows are coming in hot, so he's almost expecting to have to run and fight even before he's back in Kildare, so sleeping outside might bring him a bit more comfort, because if someone comes for him, he has a better chance of escaping and not getting trapped inside a house.

All in all it's another way that shows just how deep JJ's trauma goes, and how much shit he has to sort through before he can really start to lead a better life where he feels safe and in control.

Why Will Byers hasn’t come out yet

The answer is plain and simple, homophobia. Right now we’re going to take a quick deep dive into why. I got this idea while arguing in a group chat lol.

First of all, people in the eighties were very homophobic. For example, in the book “Rebel Robin” a teacher in Hawkins high school was forced to leave the school district because someone spotted him with his boyfriend. (I don’t remember if that was his boyfriend or someone that he was on a date with please correct me if I’m wrong). Also, Will had been bullied most of his life for being gay. He was called a fairy, a freak, a fag, and many other things. He was even abused by his own father for acting queer.

Second, he might be afraid of rejection. Trust me, nothing hurts more than being rejected by your own family for being gay. Will might be cautious in telling his family because he’s afraid that they’ll hate him. Where would he go if they kick him out? Of course his family (minus Lonnie) is loving and caring but Will is still afraid and doesn’t want to take that risk. Being rejected by your friends can hurt too. Will doesn’t want to lose the people that he’s grown up with, who he’s literally gone to hell and back with. He thinks it’s better to stay silent than face being hated by everyone. Another thing is that he kind of rejects himself in a way. “When you’re different, you feel like a mistake.” He feels like he is a mistake for being gay even though he knows that he can’t change his sexuality even if he really wants to.

Finally, he would rather sacrifice his own happiness for everyone else’s. He would rather not come out and tell Mike his feelings so Mike can stay “happy” with El. He would rather get hurt himself than let Mike, El, or anyone else get hurt.

To conclude, this is just a quick deep dive. These are just things that I think backed up with evidence. Like I said earlier, I got this idea from arguing in a group chat. It was an argument about why Will Byers hasn’t come out yet. I didn’t fit everything here and there might be some things I missed. To end on a lighthearted note, I made this into a whole essay lol. I wrote more here than I do in my English class essays in school. 😂

I know that Ray has green eyes but I always hc him to have purple eyes like his mother. Ray grew up his whole life abused and hurt by his own mom who treated the other countless human children who weren't even hers with love and care. Ray having purple eyes is like super important to me because like what if he hates them and that's why he covers his eye because they remind him of Isabella's cold and calculating eyes and he doesn't want to be anything like the woman who made his life miserable and it gets worse after Norman is shipped because she has actually physicalally hurt one of his friends. When ray reunites with isabella I always hc that deep down he always wanted to fix his relationship with her and so did isabella, but she's killed before he has the chance. Her death is both slightly relieving but also depressing for him because although she hurt him a those years, she's still his biological mom.

SO IN CONCLUSION:

PROTECT RAY AT ALL COSTS

I have enough self-awareness to admit that I would have been head over heels for Felix had he been around when I was 13
