The past week's work: three digitized patterns from antique garments! - The 1840s bodice is 34/36" bust - 31" waist (pattern HERE) - The 1880s is 44" bust - 32" waist (pattern HERE) - the 1920s dress is 47" bust - 48" waist (pattern HERE)
All three patterns are currently with testers for the next two weeks and after that I will be able to put them up on Etsy!
I have seven other antiques waiting for patterning (and two more on the way) - just have to decide what to work on next....

Does anybody who sews know of any companies that sell plus sized patterns? (Specifically I'm like a 24 and most commercial patterns go up to 22 🙄)
I'm having a hard time finding any and it's getting frustrating so I thought I'd ask. I have a silly dream of replacing all my clothes with handmade ones but fitting is such a huge issue for me.

Listen I am not going to name anyone specifically, but pattern makers need to talk to one (1) fat person before they can post their patterns online.
I am so sick of finding a cute pattern, getting all the supplies, checking my gage, and starting to knit, only to find that my sleeves are a foot longer than a normal human because the pattern maker just multiplied all their numbers by 10 when they sized it up. I can't believe I have to say this but, just because my ass is fat does not mean my arms go down to my knees???

finishing up my midnight blue fisherman sweater and about to start my next few projects (in no particular order, i’ve embraced having multiple wips at a time):
- a light springy little cream cardigan 4 my love (blah blah blah sweater curse who 🙄)
- a very hungry caterpillar hat + sleep sack and a set of knit cotton washcloths for my cousin’s baby that’s on their way soonnnnn
- i want to make a reddish orangeish rusty earthy sweater for myself, haven’t picked out a pattern just yet tho

current retail dilemma: I want to stock the William Morris printed tights REAL bad but if it turns out I’m the only one who thinks they’re amazing I will have a minimum order’s worth of tights I can’t sell

I made myself a floral-patterned victorian-inspired waistcoat as the first step to the lovecore suit I eventually want to make for (my dragsona) Valentine

On a roll! This pattern is [CLOSED] for testers - the original garment is a c. 1910 brassiere (or corset cover) with a 47” (119cm) bust and 40” (101cm) high waist. It’s deceptively simple - that cross-bust entredeux lace hides two pairs of darts, and there’s also an appliquéd underarm guard. I’m definitely going to make a version for myself at some point <3
Edit: Now on Etsy here!
I received some tester photos back but none of them are actually the right size for this garment, so holding off on posting them here. (Both have large busts and comparatively small waists, so while they can wear it, it doesn't fit them as it should.)

I decided to treat myself and make this top today instead of doll clothes. The pattern is a modified Mccalls pattern and honestly the neck and shoulders are a bit too big for my personal preference but hopefully it looks "fashionably oversized" and not just....too big you know?

Ok, so my last post about the issues of plus sized patterns popped off in a way I did not expect??
I just want to come back and say: making patterns is hard work and especially those who make their patterns free online, it is a LOT of hard work that the designer gets nothing back for. I didn't mean for it to sound like I thought that was an easy thing to do.
But, like a lot of people pointed out in the tags and comments, fashion world has already done the leg work for us. There are size charts and mathematical equations you can do to scale your pieces in such a way that at least matches what you would see in stores. I think, honestly, that this is where the break down is. I think pattern makers take bust/chest measurements, and scale all of their numbers from there, without thinking about their piece as clothing (instead of just a knitting project, if that makes sense).
And I think that's where fat people get left behind. Because our bodies don't scale the way you would scale up a hat or mittens or something. It takes added work and added care to think about fat people and how our bodies look and work (hence why my previous post said "please talk to a fat person"--it's not that we know how to make patterns, but that we can advise what works for our bodies!)
I want to end on a helpful note, if I can:
My favorite pattern maker for plus sized projects is Jacqueline Cieslak!
I have bought a couple of patterns from them, and I have never had the not-for-fat-bodies problems I have had before. They have a handful of different styles, many of which are very customizable. Not to mention that the patterns themselves are VERY thorough. They link to tutorial videos they have made for anything more complicated than a stockinette stitch, and have lots of detailed diagrams showing different measurements for different parts of the project.
Anytime I am making a piece for myself or my other plus sized love ones, I go to Jacqueline first! Hopefully their patterns will help anyone who identified with my previous post find some patterns that work for them!

I'm aliveeee! I'm not that good with social media, it seems, but I have some progress! I'll be printing my patterns again soon and can start working on my first Lolita piece since I first tried it in 2011 with an ELG McCall's pattern.
The plan isn't for anything too complicated, a simple jsk with lace trim and layered ribbons going perpendicular to the stripes. Now to measure, refit and reprint my bodice blocks!
Tumblr media
I recently got two planners to use for projects, one technically for cosplay as a Google sheet, and a physical one they both have differing spaces for each step laid out. I love them so much already! And they were both under $10!

I also recently made a rice bag for warmth on bad pain days (aka almost all days recently), it works really well! I plan to use the fabric for another jsk, and am looking forward to that!
Tumblr media
That's most it for me, have a great day everyone!
