And here's the consolidated list (mostly?) All from Diamond in the Rough, character notes below cut (not in same order as pics)
Considered a few different systems for assigning gems (gemstone family, value, etc.) but ultimately just went with color/relative familiarity of gem. There’s so many cool gems out there~ (I was trying to not be too repetitive with types/use more common ones though Quartz has a million interesting varieties!)
Mega Man, Blue Sapphire Sphere I wavered a lot on his ‘trinket’, Sapphire seemed obvious (especially with Proto being a ruby, both are corundum gemstones) but also considered blue diamond, alexandrite (blue/purple color shift), and aquamarine. For the jewelry, was also considering an atomic model (for chemistry?), a screwdriver, and slightly regretting not considering circlet
Roll, Amethyst Earring: primarily always wanted amethyst, but also considered heliodor, padparadscha sapphire (but it wasn’t quite the right color? and perhaps too obscure), tanzanite, morganite, zoisite, kunsite, iolite, (purple gems etc.) For shape, was considering spikes/fangs though that’s also Treble and Punk’s lol
Bass, Emerald Snake Arm Cuff: loosely based on a real arm cuff I saw in a book. Also considered black diamond, green diamond (he’s the titular ‘diamond in the rough’), and black opal
Proto Man, Ruby Aviator Badge: I went with ruby in the end, which seemed most obvious choice, but also considered red diamond and bixbite (red beryl)
Elec Man, Black Opal Ring: Also considered chatoyant Sapphire, Alexandrite (??? color shift?), chrysoberyl, angelite/anhydrite, and even hawkeye quartz (loosely inspired by a real hawkeye ‘lightning’ ring, before that I was thinking cufflinks, but seemed weird for him to become either a pair of gems, or even a single cufflink lol)
Jewel Man, Colorless Beryl (Goshenite) Monocle - also considered rock crystal, diamond, and Padparadscha sapphire. Apparently both beryl and rock crystal were historically used for eyeglasses. Monocle is a reference to gentleman thief archtypes, also they are just fancy. (Also I realized while drawing this that having a plique a jour monocle chain is probably super impractical, oh well lol)
Top Man, Imperial Topaz  Pendant in a Jeweled Egg - also considered alexandrite and spinel (for the pun, heh) and spessertite
Kalinka/Mega Girl, Rose Quartz Blossom Barrette: Pink :) though I considered other lesser known (but more valuable) pink gems
Quint, Alexandrite Wristwatch: Quint is a time traveler (of sorts), also considered model armillary sphere/astrolabe, a screwdriver, and jade or malachite or nanocrystal
Wily, Agate Cameo Belt Buckle: Loosely inspired by his skull belt in some of his game art, also considered amythist
Dr. Light, Alabaster bead on a bookmark tassel:  Dr. Light likes books! Was also considering rock crystal and goshenite
Ring Man, Zircon Hoop Bracelet: Reference to both his namesake and his carney background. Was also considering class ring (before assigning the ring to Elec Man) and a circlet. ‘Zircon’ just sounds circusy, must be the Z
Magnet Man, Garnet Horseshoe Amulet: garnets are apparently magnetic, also considered fridge magnet
Cut Man, Citrine Paperknife: for obvious reasons. I also considered topaz for the gem
Guts Man, Tourmaline Paperweight: funny/fitting pairing with the paper knife, the shape is in reference to the boulder he holds in game art (for a brief week, was a rock crystal until I realized those are clear lol smokey quartz would have made more sense)
Punk, Spinel Motorcycle Chain: ‘Spinel’ may be a derivative from Latin ’spina’ which means thorn
Rush, Labradorite Bone Collar Tag: Went for the pun!
Treble, Howlite Fang: and ditto for Treble
Others that weren’t in chapter (this list has no significance what-so-ever, I brainstormed a list of gems but also ‘trinkets’ and my brain just started associating lol)
Beat, Aquamarine Aigrette: Beat actually avoided transformation, but that’s what he would have been
Gyro Man: Mood Ring
Dr. Cossack: Selenite something or other
Dark Man: D20
Time Man: a pocket watch
Enker: Chess piece
Metal Man: A knife
Shadow Man: Also a knife, maybe jade
Yamato Man: Natsuke
Burner Man: Match Box
Fake Man: phenakite, derived from greek word for deceiver
Magic Man: Card Case
Needle Man: Rutilated quartz (it has needle-like inclusions)
Pharaoh Man: Scarab collar pin/cloak clasp
Star Man: Star Saphire?
And that's it from the notes, haha.

White Moves First, Part 2 ~ Edmund Pevensie
I’ve had this part written for a while but needed to work up the motivation to post it, so here it is. Here’s the part where jealous Edmund comes in. I hope you like it @emotionallyattachedteen!
Summary: Despite the distance between their two lands, Y/N, princess of Archenland, is close friends with King Edmund the Just. But when push comes to shove, will friendship turn to more?
Warnings: none
Word count: 3.4k

With the care Rona applied the rouge to my cheeks, one would’ve thought the whole evening revolved around the perfect pink tint of my cheeks. Prince Rabadash wouldn’t magically love Archenland because of the ministrations of my lady’s maid.
Honestly, I wasn’t sure there was anything that could divert him from the path of war.
When my cheeks were rosy enough, Rona finally abandoned the pot of the dark pink powder, her fingers fluttering to my hair.
I opened my jewelry drawer, my hands hovering over the various rings, brooches, necklaces, and hair pieces. Selecting a dainty silver bracelet, I slid it onto my wrist, secretly hoping Prince Rabadash hated silver.
A knock sounded against my door. “Are you decent?” my father’s voice called from the other side.
“Let him in,” I murmured to Rona, who scurried off to do just that. Instead of greeting my father, I continued where she’d left off, placing little clips to hold my hair in place. The ball would start soon, and it would not do for the princess of Archenland to be late.
“Y/N?” My father’s form appeared behind me in my mirror.
“Yes?” I said, focusing on one lock of hair that refused to lay right.
My father didn’t reply, and that was when, in the mirror, I spotted the box he held tightly to his chest. I swiveled to face him, noticing for the first time how nervous he looked. “What’s going on?”
He took a deep breath. “You are the one female member of our family.”
I raised my eyebrows. Had he just noticed this? “Yes…I am.”
Never had my father seemed so uncomfortable in all my life. “The prince—Prince Rabadash—you know, the prince coming tonight?”
“Yes? What about him?”
“A-and you’re the princess...”
I placed my hands in my lap. “Father, please just say what it is you want to say.”
My dad leaned against my four-poster bed, looking quite like he wanted to be anywhere else. “You’re a woman now. And Prince Rabadash is a man.”
A sinking feeling started in my gut as I started to see the direction my father steered in. “What is it, exactly, that you want me to do with the prince?”
“I want you to stay close to him. Let him avail himself of your goodwill and beauty.”
My stomach turned over. “You want me to cater to the man who might declare war on us?”
“Honey draws more flies than vinegar.” Despite his words, my father, the king of Archenland, couldn’t meet my eye.
I wanted to scream no, refuse him, scold him for even asking in the first place. Why did I have to be honey? Why wasn’t he lecturing Corin on his vinegar tendencies?
But I knew my father. I knew being king meant Archenland needed to be the most important thing. More important than family or his pride.
Now it seemed I had to decide if it was to be more important than my pride.
My father stepped forward, lifting the lid of the box. If I hadn’t been preoccupied, I would’ve gasped at the sight of the dainty tiara that rested inside.
“I think we both need your mother with us for tonight,” my father said.
I looked up at him. “This was…?”
“Your mother’s,” he confirmed.
I gently lifted the tiara from the box, my eyes outlining the shapes and twirls made out of silver, diamonds, and sapphires.
“After we were married and before I became king, this is what she wore to formal events.” My father took the tiara from my hand, and I faced the mirror as my father gently lowered it onto my head. It matched beautifully with the gentle, dusty blue of my dress. “She would’ve wanted you to have it, probably long before now, but I–” He swallowed. “I couldn’t part with it.”
A lump grew in my throat. “Father–”
My father straightened, awkwardly wiping his hands on his pants. “I will, uh, I will see you downstairs.” And with that, he left.
Rona came forward, adding more pins to my hair to hold the laurel of precious stones in place. Her steady fingers made quick work of it, but even if I’d had a critique, I wouldn’t have the capacity to express it.
My father rarely spoke of my mother, and I had no stories of my own to tell nor trinkets to treasure. For him to give this to me now…
I wasn’t born yesterday.
I knew this gift was intended to soften the blow of what he was asking for. The stunning tiara, nestled on my head, laughed at me.
My mother would never have been put in this position. She’d never stepped foot in court until after she and my father were married, so she would’ve never been a human sacrifice to a visiting royal. It wouldn’t be proper for a married woman—the queen, no less—to spend more than a dance with an unmarried prince.
However, for me, a young and available member of royalty?
Rona took a step back. “There,” she said with satisfaction. “Beauty befitting a princess.”
I let out a large sigh, studying my reflection, and she frowned. “Is everything alright?”
“Yes, Rona, thank you. That will be all.” She smiled, looking pleased before picking up the discarded gray gown I’d worn earlier.
I rose from my seat, positioning my shaking hands in a docile hold.
This prince clearly possessed few virtues, if any, and I had no desire to be around the man who was threatening my country’s safety.
But my father was right, and in his words, I found my task for the night.
Be honey.
-
“Presenting the royal family of Archenland!”
I hung back slightly, allowing my father and then my brothers to enter the ballroom first, as was the custom.
My favorite place to play as a child was this ballroom. It didn’t matter if the windows were covered with curtains, the candelabras were extinguished, and dust covered the floor; I still loved to play in the dimly lit space. Corin never wanted to dance with me, and Cor hadn’t returned to us at that point, so I would bring my doll with me. Unfortunately, Miss Strucker was a slow learner when it came to the steps of a ballroom dance.
I smiled gently at the memory as I followed my family into the already crowded room.
Growing up a motherless princess, I was well accustomed to stares and whispers, so I barely noticed the whole court’s attention shifting to me. The weight of their attention didn’t cause any coils of distress, nor any bending of my neck. I kept my head held high, and my eyes peeled for the Calormen prince.
The member of royalty my eyes fell upon, however, was not a spoiled, vengeful prince, but a king standing strong and tall.
Edmund.
A crowd of young ladies crowded around him, and to anyone else, the king most likely looked pleasantly intrigued by the attention. But I knew him well enough to know how his skin crawled with all the attention. As I watched, Elizabeth, the daughter of one of the nobles in my father’s council, laughed about something, her hand coming to rest on his arm.
I pressed my hand to my lips, stifling my laugh of amusement.
Could it be considered treason to make one’s princess snort at such a formal event?
 “Your Highness.”
It took a lifetime of tutors and study in social grace to elegantly face the speaker, but even all those lessons couldn’t keep my heart from hardening upon the sight of the lavish fashion of Calormen.  “Prince Rabadash, I presume.”
The prince smiled, revealing his teeth in a gesture quite like a panther mid-snarl. “Princess Y/N.” His hand shot out to clutch mine, bringing it to his mouth for a kiss.
Now whose skin was crawling?
“Would you like to dance?” he asked.
Not particularly.
“If his highness insists,” I said with a slight smile.
“I most certainly do.” The prince took my outstretched hand and led me out onto the dance floor. The music started, leading us in the whirling routine of a foxtrot. “You are a beautiful dancer, my lady,” said the Calormen prince, his voice slipperier than butter.
I thought of Miss Strucker and smirked. “Isn’t that a requirement for anyone of our status?
“One would think, but my poor toes have been trodden on a fair amount of times in my lifetime.”
Was the prince being...pleasant? I’d anticipated social hurdles, yet the prince had sought me out for a dance and was making conversation. What was his game?
“I suppose one of the many hazards of our station involves the sacrifice of our toes.” I waited, hoping the prince would catch the hint.
“Ahhh, I would guess you’re right.”
I waited for more, but the prince remained silent. “But dancing is hardly one of the more dangerous requirements for a member of royalty,” I said. Prince Rabadash tilted his head to the side. He wanted me to say it. To spell it out.
I didn’t even hesitate.
 “For instance, declarations of war.”
“Ahh, so the lady is aware of the perilous relationship between our two countries?” the prince asked, as if he were saying it to another courtier instead of to me.
My hold on my temper slipped. “Is that surprising, considering the lady is from one of the two countries in question?” I asked haughtily.
A smile spread across the prince’s face. “I like you, Princess Y/N.”
“That was not my intent,” I replied before I could stop myself, revulsion tingling underneath my skin.
“And yet it happened all the same.”
I sensed an opening. I knew what my father would say…but I also knew what Edmund would say, and Edmund’s voice matched the one in my heart. “If you like me, are you going to try and take over a country so you can steal me away in the night?”
Rabadash’s eyebrows lowered dangerously. “Hopefully,” he said, his tone dark and icy, “you’d give in before we reached that point.”
I only barely suppressed my shudder, refusing to show him any kind of weakness. I switched tactics. “Since I’m favored, may I request a boon?”
“And what would that be?”
“Peace.”
The prince lifted his chin so he was looking down his nose at me. “Like everything else in life, peace requires negotiation. And, unfortunately, you have nothing to negotiate with.”
He was wrong.
I possessed one thing to barter away: the thing my father quite possibly hoped I would use to my advantage when he gifted me the tiara currently weighing my head down.
Honey.
Not necessarily nothing, like Rabdash said, but nothing I could bring myself to give.
“If it’s a negotiation you want,” I said loftily, “then it’s the king you should speak to.”
The corners of his mouth spread, revealing a sliver of his flaxen teeth. “I’d much prefer to continue talking with you, if you don’t mind.”
I did mind. I minded terribly.
Be honey, I told myself over and over again. Be honey, be honey, be honey.
“It would be my honor,” I said, the words barely making it through my tightly clenched jaw.
Prince Rabadash’s smile widened.
-
Edmund considered himself to be a courteous man, one of good stock and stature. He always chewed with his mouth closed. He allowed others to speak first, and he tried his best to uphold his responsibility as king to make others feel safe and valued. He paid attention. He offered good advice. Indeed, there was not a single rule or common courtesy that Edmund didn’t follow to the letter.
Which is how he knew exactly how rude he was being when, instead of engaging in conversation with the multitude of young ladies crowded around him, he was watching Y/N’s pathetic excuse of a dance partner.
It was a terribly important evening, to be sure, but Edmund wasn’t part of the Archenlandian royal family, so he didn’t have to play host. He also held zero interest in the courtiers around him.
His only concern was the enemy in this ballroom parading as a friend.
He didn’t trust Rabadash whatsoever, and so, he wasn’t going to take his eyes off the prince once.
That plan went up in smoke the moment he arrived, as the female members of Archenland’s nobility descended on him like vultures. He’d been waiting anxiously for Y/N to arrive. He wanted to make some excuse to duck out of the conversations to go be with her, but when she appeared like a pastel goddess, his thoughts got scrambled.
Before he could properly rearrange them, Prince Rabadash whisked her off to the dance floor.
In Anvard, tradition dictated that a man, be it slave or king, could only dance with the queen or princess for two dances in a row before graciously taking his leave.
Prince Rabadash was on his fourth and showed no sign of stopping.
Edmund’s hands clenched.
The prince’s hand was on Y/N’s waist.
That waist was too good for any hand, Prince Rabadash’s least of all.
Edmund stared at the offending appendage, past caring about the discomforting bodies clad in opulence surrounding him.
He wasn’t the only one paying attention. On the opposite side of the ballroom, he saw Princes Cor and Corin muttering to each other, glancing at their sister. King Loon mingled with his courtiers, but would habitually look over his shoulder at the Calormen prince with his daughter. All the other nobility didn’t even try to be sneaky with their scrutiny, and Edmund knew they were wondering the same thing he was.
What was he doing dancing with their princess?
“Pardon me, ladies, but I must speak with my brother alone.”
Edmund could only tear his eyes away for a second to confirm that Susan was the one shooing all the other women away before returning his attention to the prince.
“You look unwell,” his sister said by way of greeting.
Edmund shifted, clenching his jaw. “I think something’s not agreeing with my stomach.”
“Oh, did you eat something bad?”
Edmund watched the Calormen prince spin Y/N once, twice, three times, each spin seemingly swirling his own insides. “Something like that.”
Susan looked in the direction he was. “They’re just dancing.”
“He’s practically drooling all over her,” he snapped, a flush of heat flashing through him. “It’s distasteful.”
“It’s not distasteful for the prince to show interest,” Susan said quietly, likely trying to bring him back from the edge, to remind him of reality despite how they both felt about Rabadash. “To anyone else, it just appears to be the beginning stages of a courtship.”
The word nearly made Edmund choke. He whipped his head around to glare at his sister. “Under absolutely no circumstances will Y/N be courting Rabadash.”
Susan fixed him with a look he didn’t understand but knew enough to fear. “Y/N might not be courting,” she looked back to the prince and princess, “but Prince Rabadash certainly is.”
A horrible thought occurred to Edmund.
By saving Susan from Rabadash’s clutches…was he sacrificing Y/N?
Was Rabadash exchanging one woman for another?
With an audible swallow, Edmund turned his attention back to the dancing pair, drawing close to the ending of their fourth dance.
Y/N curtsied, but instead of offering her the answering bow, a cruel smile spread across Rabadash’s face. As her head was bowed in respect, he looked at her like he was going to eat her, like she was some cheap liquor to be greedily consumed instead of savored.
Edmund’s stomach roiled.
The next thing he knew, he was halfway across the ballroom.
He wished he could blame it on the music, claim that the music possessed him somehow, but the music dropped out at the end of the song and had yet to start up again. As Prince Rabadash opened his mouth, Edmund smoothly slid in between them, offering his hand to Y/N.
“Your Highness, can I have the honor of the next dance?”
Edmund could’ve sworn he saw a flash of relief in Y/N’s face before she nodded, putting her hand in his. He turned slightly to guide Y/N to a different part of the dance floor and caught sight of the prince’s frown.
That’s right, he thought to himself as a sick satisfaction tolled through him like the booms of a grandfather clock. Go find someone else to slobber over.
The music started up. With Rabadash’s predatory look seared into his brain, Edmund gave a generous bow in response to Y/N’s curtsy. He took her hand in his, pulling her close enough for him to rest his hand firmly on her waist before leading her in the waltz.
“Is there a reason you decided to interrupt?” Y/N asked evenly, her eyes fixed on some point over Edmund’s shoulder.
Was she upset to no longer be dancing with the prince? Was Susan right? Were the two of them courting? Edmund forced a smile. “I consider it my sacred duty to keep you from princes dripping with contempt and saliva.”
Y/N raised her eyebrows. “Do you really think I have no prior experience with men drooling all over me?”
“Are you seeking to set off my gag reflex?” Edmund replied, the sting of bile indeed rising in his throat.
Y/N searched his face with twinkling eyes, her appraisal making Edmund squirm slightly. “You’re jealous,” she said slowly.
Edmund’s jaw nearly dropped. “Well,” he said shortly, “the prince is attracted to you.”
Y/N rolled her eyes. “Now you seek to set off my gag reflex.”
“I’m telling the truth,” Edmund insisted. The princess just shook her head, and Edmund couldn’t leash the words. “It’s so obvious!”
“Calm down, before that vein in your forehead bursts.”
“I’m being perfectly reasonable!”
Y/N raised her eyebrows. “You know, if you don’t calm down, people are going to start staring.”
“We’re royalty,” Edmund muttered. “They never stop staring.” Nevertheless, he took some deep breaths, recalling his renowned sangfroid. “I’m sorry.”
Y/N grinned, a strangely wild expression in the context of such finery. “What could His Majesty possibly be apologizing for?”
“For losing my temper.” Edmund smiled sheepishly. “I shouldn’t have raised my voice.” Y/N squeezed his hand. It was a subtle gesture of comfort strong enough to begin releasing the strained knot in Edmund’s chest, freeing his words. “The prince tried to abduct my sister because he was going to force her into marriage. To see my closest friend dancing with him–” Edmund summoned all his effort to keep his grip on Y/N’s waist and hand light in spite of his anger. “It is almost unbearable.”
Y/N’s eyes narrowed slightly.
Panic crashed over him, and he worried he’d said too much.
But then the hand positioned on his shoulder glided closer to his neck. “I understand completely,” she said. Edmund felt the evening’s tension roll away. How could she conduct herself with so much grace after having to dance with Rabadash, to have the prince’s hands touching her skin? Her mother must’ve been an angel for Y/N to possess such patience and compassion.
Y/N glanced over Edmund’s shoulder again. “Truly, Prince Rabadash is an ass.”
Edmund started, appalled to hear such a word from a princess’s lips. “Y/N!”
Not a whit of shame or contrition resided in her expression as she said: “He is!”
Edmund laughed, loudly and with a sense of newfound wonder.
He’d always appreciated her quick wit and unfailing grace. She’d always been his equal, capable of going toe to toe in anything.
But her words shone a new light, illuminating a part of her he hadn’t ever seen before. She could get him to relax and laugh in a way no one save for his siblings could. And they’d known Edmund his whole life, whereas Y/N only got to talk to him whenever he was in Archenland.
As Edmund spun with Y/N in the center of the dance floor, he wondered how she brought clarity to everything in his life and yet simultaneously created some sort of muddling fog to his brain.
The music drew to a close, the silence after somehow sorrowful. “Another dance?” Edmund suggested.
Doubt filled Y/N’s eyes. Her hand lifted to gently touch the beautiful tiara nestled in her hair.
It was a different tiara than Y/N’s normal one, Edmund realized with a start. Judging by the way she ran her finger over the exquisite jewels, it was precious to her for something other than its monetary value.
“I’m sorry, Edmund,” she said, her voice low enough to make him feel like her confidante. “I have to go be honey.”
Before he could ask what that meant, she curtsied and left the dance floor.
Edmund watched her go.
She was only three paces away from him when the Calormen prince swarmed back to her side, hovering over her like a pesky fly.
A strange feeling wormed around in his gut. He couldn’t explain the nature or the cause of it. All he knew was this feeling was growing at an alarming rate.
Only time would tell if it became problematic.

Hi Alice!!
If you don't mind, could you do Athanasia headcanons in a modern au? ❤️ I really like the creativity that you put into your headcanons and say something more about her fashion, the athy from the manhwa used many hairstyles so I always felt that she cared a lot about fashion (like make up, hair accesories, jewelry, skincare) I want to know what you think about that
Ooooh more Athy headcanons?? Delighted! (I'm so glad ppl are liking the modern au, so here we goooo!!!!)
Tumblr media
I feel like she'd just have good genetics, so skincare(expensive or otherwise) is usually gifted to her but she rarely uses them (on the other hand, she could be like those celebrity Vogue videos where they slather on every expensive cream known to mankind so either or lmao)
She's a jewelry girlie, and she accessorizes on the daily using rings that could range anywhere from minimalistic for school, like thin gold or silver bands. For when she follows her dad to business meetings, she would wear discreet name brand ones, and maybe her earrings would be a flashy brand to signal everything else she's wearing is of the same caliber.
I think she would prefer practical jewelry that she can wear into the water, but also, she would be the type to methodically arrange, take-off, and clean the jewelry she wore that day.
Specific gemstones she likes would probably be rubies, sapphires(pink and blue), diamonds, and she enjoys gold as the main material for her jewelry over all else.
Make-up is probably less is more for Athy, she doesn't need it and she knows that, but during school she'll wear minimalistic eye-liner to create more depth and choosing between the shades of pink gloss for her lips would give her lots of joy.
Hair accessories would be anywhere from pastel hair ties with little charms dangling at the ends if she has her hair up in a ponytail/pigtails or simple, black velvet ribbons woven through her hair if she has braids or with a pop of color here and there using flowers and mini gold clips if her hair is flowing free down her back.
Fashion-wise, per my last post, I believe she'd be old-money during formal occasions(let's think black skirts, white/navy tops, dark tights and slingback kitten heels, a gold, pearl strand watch and simple studs in her ears), vs school(usually sneakers, pleated skirts of a variety of colors, a bracelet band smartwatch, lowkey jewelry) or going out (jeans/skirts, boots or sneakers, a leather band watch, flowy tops.)

in business, in life (silvio ricci x oc [hyacinth])
Event: Ikemen Prince gift exchange hosted by @ikemenlibrary and @sunnyikemen || Hugehugehuge thank you to these two for being such amazing organizers and guiding me through my first-ever gift exchange <3
This was written for the lovely @tacogawa ! This is something I wouldn’t normally write, so I hope I did your OC and Silvio justice- i had so much fun and inspiration writing this, plz enjoy!!
Summary: Silvio claims he’s the best businessman in all of Rhodiolite and Benitoite combined. After finalizing an investment plan with his fiance in her bookstore, she challenges that claim in a series of business competitions!
Notes/Warnings/Tags: Established relationship (Silvio and Hyacinth are engaged) + Found family with Leon, Clavis, Jin, and Nokto aka some of the other princes that were requested + my attempts at humor + fluff at the end; EXTREMEEELLYY minor spoilers for Silvio’s backstory, it’s only there if you squint!
Word Count: ~2.7k
Tumblr media
“There’s one last thing I need to show you,” Hyacinth declared, close to finishing up the tour of her bookshop. She stopped right in front of an unassuming door that said STAFF ONLY.
“I don’t need to see your supply closet, Hyacinth,” Silvio said brashly.
“But-”
“I trust that you know how to spend your money on cleaning expenses and your facilities.”
“Oh,” she blinked. “Why can’t you ever give a straightforward compliment?”
“It’s like you always say: I’m hopeless.” A ghost of a smile could be seen upon Silvio’s lips.
Hyacinth playfully rolled her eyes at him, “At least you’re self-aware.” She gestured to the door, “This is not my supply closet, though. It’s, well, let me just-” Slowly opening the door, she walked inside the room and turned on the light switch. Silvio followed closely behind.
His eyes scanned the room which was filled with rows of display cases containing gems of all colors and sizes, reflecting light from the chandeliers dangling overhead. Some were unrefined, but many of them were polished, placed within jewelry as the center stones of rings or hanging onto necklaces and bracelets. “Not bad,” he said. He held some unrefined sapphire in his hand and squinted. “These are…Obsidianite, aren’t they? All of them are.”
Hyacinth nodded.
“How did you manage to obtain these?”
“Remember how my parents were Benitoitian pirates? I still have some connections, some old friends who provide me with a…variety of goods, some would say.”
“That’s one hell of a way to stimulate the economy.” Silvio ran his hands along the display cases, “Always full of surprises, ain’t ya?”
“I just thought you should know now since you’re actually planning on moving forward with investing,” Hyacinth explained. “If, somehow, I get caught, I don’t want you to be in hot water too. Not as a prince of Benitoite.”
He snorted. “Is that really why you haven’t told me about this? If I’m investing, there’s no way you’d get caught, and even if you did, I’d bribe them into silence.”
Hyacinth let out a breath of relief. “So, really, this is okay?”
“Business is business. Though, this ain’t the way I’d do it.”
“Oh yeah?” Hyacinth crossed her arms and leaned against the door frame as she watched her partner walk through the room. “How would the great Prince Silvio do it?”
“First of all,” he picked up a necklace with a sparkling light pink diamond, laying it on his palm to see how it would reflect the light. “I would store these better. The light and humidity here can degrade some of them over time.”
Hyacinth sighed. “I know that. You think I have enough money to get full-scale climate control here?”
“Second of all, the reason you’re not making enough money for that is because this is a bookshop,” he continued, ignoring his fiance. “I would auction these off instead of running this store underground. You’re not gonna reach the right audience by selling these here.”
“I’m not trying to sell to rich strangers. I like forging personal relationships with my buyers. I want these gems and jewelry to go to the people who will take care of them.”
“You’re not making any money like that.” Silvio put the diamond necklace around Hyacinth’s neck and whispered into her ear. “This is why I’m the better business person out of the two of us.”
Hyacinth stepped forward and turned around to face Silvio. “No way!”
Silvio smirked, ignoring Hyacinth’s words while admiring how beautiful she looked with a diamond necklace that matched the engagement ring he gave her.
“Silvio, you are not checking me out right now!”
He merely shrugged.
“Okay,” she paused as the gears turned in her head. “I challenge you to a barter battle,” she said, pointing her index finger at him. Hyacinth’s eyes flitted around the room. “Whoever can trade up to the most valuable item-“ her eyes landed on a pencil next to Silvio. She grabbed the pencil from the table and shoved it towards Silvio “-from this pencil, is the better businessperson.”
He took the pencil from her, unimpressed. “Y’know you’re talking to the number one negotiator in all of Benitoite and Rhodiolite, right?”
“Do you accept my challenge or not?”
He sighed. “You know you’re gonna lose, right?”
“We’ll see about that,” Hyacinth replied. “Okay. If we’re doing this, though, we need to do it properly. We need a third party to determine the value of our final goods.” She tapped her chin thoughtfully, “Ah, yes! Jin and Leon should be in town later in the evening. I’m sure they wouldn’t mind.”
“Those two aren’t qualified to judge-”
“You’re scared to lose, aren’t you?” Hyacinth asked, taunting him.
“As if, woman. Even with their biased judgment, I’ll still win,” he smirked, flashing a cocky smile.
“May the best businessperson win!” Hyacinth exclaimed triumphantly.
+++
“After our long deliberation,” Jin started, “we are now ready to declare a winner.”
Hyacinth couldn’t stand still, the air around her was charged with anticipation. Meanwhile, Silvio stood still next to her, his arms crossed with a cocky smile on his face.
“Before we do that though, we just wanna say that we thought both of you did a great job and that the final monetary value was very high from each final item, much more than we expected,” Leon stated cordially. “The winner of this barter battle is Hyacinth!”
Silvio’s jaw dropped momentarily, stunned into silence.
Hyacinth grinned, “Aw, thank you so much, guys. Not for choosing me as the winner, but for taking the time out of your busy schedules to do this.”
“Of course, Hyacinth! You’re family, we’re glad to do anything we can. Plus, we haven’t been able to see you as much ever since Silvio took you away,” Leon teased.
“Yeah, it’s not fair that he gets to have you all to himself now,” Jin frowned. “He better be treating you right.”
“Absolutely. He treats me like I’m royalty.”
“How did Hyacinth win? What was her item?” Silvio asked in disbelief.
“Given that his brothers are also royalty, then I don’t think that’s a good thing,” Leon laughed, ignoring Silvio.
“Um, he treats me like a queen?” Hyacinth tried correcting herself.
“His mother was a queen, remember? That didn’t pan out well,” Jin added.
“I’m right here, dammit!” Silvio exclaimed. “Hyacinth, what the hell was your item?”
A soft smile painted her lips, “Let me show you.” With everyone following her, she opened the door to her bookshop. They walked past shelves and shelves and arrived at the back corner. Silvio was met with a deep purple rolled-arm sofa, one that was definitely not here before. Its arms were gilded in gold and the velvet was fit for royalty. “I managed to get some seating for the space. I’ve gotten so much customer feedback about having a more comfortable space to read, so I managed to trade for this.”
Trying to hide his pride in Hyacinth, Silvio opened his mouth to speak but then closed it.
“Yeah, we ultimately decided Hyacinth as the winner even though your item had a larger estimated value. It’s because she keeps her customers in mind. We thought that was the most important aspect of business,” Leon clarified.
“I knew I traded to the highest value,” Silvio retorted. He turned to Hyacinth, clicking his tongue, “I could’ve just bought you a sofa. As many as you wanted. As many as your customers wanted.”
She shook her head. “These sofas are actually from a customer’s family. They’re priceless.”
Silvio only sighed as Hyacinth stared at the furniture fondly.
Jin let out a hearty chuckle, “Your business strengths complement each other well. You make up for each other’s weaknesses. The two of you are great business partners and life partners.”
Hearing Jin’s words, Hyacinth grinned widely at Silvio. He couldn’t help but smile back at her.
“Thank you for being our entertainment for the day, we were able to kill two birds with one stone! While we followed the two of you around, we were also observing all the townspeople and places today. Rhodolite feels like a major trading hub whenever Silvio’s in town,” Leon said. “Thanks for that.”
“Money follows me wherever I go,” Silvio said smugly.
“The results of our competition tell me otherwise,” Hyacinth mumbled under her breath.
Silvio’s eye twitched in irritation and laughter erupted from Jin and Leon. “Take care, you two. We gotta head back to the castle. We’ll see you soon,” Leon said, bidding the pair farewell.
Silvio and Hyacinth watched as the two princes of Rhodolite walked away. “The only reason you won is because they’re softies! Jin and Leon don’t know business,” Silvio complained.
Hyacinth hummed dismissively. “You said you’d still win despite that though.”
“I traded up to the highest value item. Is that not winning?
“Not to Jin and Leon. And to me,” Hyacinth snickered. “We could have a rematch if you’d like, say, with Clavis and Nokto as the judges. A new challenge, perhaps.”
“Those judges know commerce a little better. What would this new challenge be?”
“Whoever has the most sales in a day wins. I’m sure you’re an investor in some other nearby bookstore. Be an employee for the day.”
He scoffed, “My days of working for someone else are behind me.”
“Well, do you have any better ideas? You’re not scared again, are you?”
“Again? Since when was I afraid of any business challenge? I never was and I sure as hell am not now. I accept.”
“Great! Clavis and Nokto could monitor us to see our customer interactions as well. They can determine the winner holistically,” Hyacinth said cheerfully.
+++
Silvio approached the sign that said ROSE PETAL PAGES. The urge to kick the door down was raging through him, but he thought about what Hyacinth had always told him: “What if you break the door? It’s gonna be other people that pay for it…not everyone has money to throw away like you.” He sighed and glared at the door. Begrudgingly reaching for the doorknob, Silvio shuddered at the rare feeling of having to open a door.
The disgust on his face stayed. “Prince Silvio?” the merchant at the sales desk greeted him. “H-How are you doing? We have a new shipment of the finest books from-“
“I’m here to sell, not buy. You can take the day off, I’ll do your job for ya today. I’ll pay ya too.”
“W-What?”
“I’m here on important business. Take the day off or risk losing your top investor.”
“Y-yes, Prince Silvio.” Hurriedly picking up his bags, he rushed out of the door.
“Are all your investees this scared of you?” A voice asked from behind a shelf.
“Clavis,” Silvio greeted the purple-haired prince dryly.
“A little birdie told me you’d be at a bookstore in town.”
“Yeah, and that same birdie told me you and Nokto would be better judges than those other brothers of yours.”
“Indeed, business expertise does fall more under the domain of the foreign affairs faction. Hyacinth did mention that you felt last week’s challenge wasn’t being assessed objectively.”
“It wasn’t,” Silvio replied curtly as he walked behind the sales counter to evaluate the money box.
“Did you try to bribe Jin and Leon into naming you the winner? Prince Silvio of Benitoite begging at the feet of Rhodiolitian princes — what a headline!”
“Hyacinth bribed them with attention before I could get to them with money,” Silvio grumbled.
“Well, I can’t blame them. She seems busier than us these days. Luke always complains about her lack of presence these days.”
Silvio was always aware of Hyacinth’s relationship with the princes, all of them acting like her older brothers. He sighed, “How’d you know I’d be at this bookstore?”
“Just because you’re investing in private businesses doesn’t mean that information is private,” Clavis smiled slyly.
“Fair,” Silvio replied as he opened the money box and dropped in some money for the worker he just told to leave.
“It seems you’re paying that man more than three times his daily wage,” Clavis observed.
Silvio scoffed as he shut the money box, “What sort of patron do you take me for?”
+++
“Good morning, Hyacinth. What lovely books are you selling today?”
“Nokto, it’s been so long! Thank you for indulging me and judging these silly business games.”
“I’d indulge you anytime,” he said with a wink.
“Uh huh,” Hyacinth deadpanned. “I have a book just for you.” She grabbed a tattered book from under the desk, some of its pages falling out. “It’s been gathering dust, waiting for you.”
Nokto’s face instantly turned sour as he looked at the cover. The almanac’s title was Growing Bellpeppers: From Planting to Harvest. “Ugh, I think I’m gonna throw up.”
Hyacinth laughed, “Go throw up outside then!”
“Please, you’re not getting rid of me that easily.”
“But you’re gonna drive away all of the female customers,” Hyacinth whined.
“Or I’ll bring them in.”
Hyacinth stared at Nokto in mock disgust as he grinned back. The two of them almost immediately erupted in laughter.
“Don’t mind me, I’ll just watch you work as I lounge on your new, luxurious couch. Jin and Leon told me about the look on Silvio’s face when they said you were the winner. I’d love to see it myself.”
“Silvio and I expect you to judge us fairly,” you said, giving him a pointed look.
“Sure, sure,” Nokto replied as he put his arms behind his head, sinking comfortably into the sofa. “Anything for the future princess of Benitoite.”
+++
“For his shrewd marketing and patronage of his businesses, Nokto and I have declared Silvio as the sole winner of this…little game of yours,” Clavis announced.
“As expected,” Silvio acknowledged.
“No! Don’t tell me it’s because I showed Nokto that book,” Hyacinth feigned offense.
“Unfortunately, no. It was actually because you hurt my feelings, saying I would drive all the ladies away. Oh, how you scorn me,” Nokto replied sarcastically.
Hyacinth just shook her head with a smile. “As much as Hyacinth is a great communicator, Silvio just had more sales. He was very clever, using his princely status to draw in a larger crowd.”
“Ah, nothing beats the prince privilege,” Hyacinth noted in defeat. “If only I had that.”
Nokto shrugged, “Maybe, but you could’ve used your future princess privilege to draw in a crowd. I’m so sad that you couldn’t take my hint.”
She sighed, “I guess you’re right. Silvio actually won this one fair and square.”
“Damn right I did,” Silvio replied.
“At least I lose with grace!”
“The two of you complement each other well. Silvio is savvy with negotiations and the handling of money, while Hyacinth is incredibly attuned to her customers’ needs and efficient in organization,” Clavis concluded.
“Leon and Jin mentioned something like that too,” Silvio mumbled.
+++
“Thank you, my love, for entertaining these games of mine,” Hyacinth said as she leaned into Silvio’s shoulder, wrapping an arm around his torso where they sat next to each other in the moving carriage.
“It was my pleasure,” Silvio said quietly as he ruffled Hyacinth’s auburn hair. “You held your own against me, I’m impressed.”
“We’re tied, one to one, I think I did more than just ‘holding my own.’”
“Headstrong and savvy,” Silvio observed, “This is why I’m gonna marry you.”
“Ah, so you’re just marrying me because I’m a good business partner?” Hyacinth teased.
“I’m marrying you because you’re my life partner. You make up for everything I can’t even imagine doing or being- not just when it comes to business,” Silvio said sincerely. “Sure, you push me to be a better businessman, but you push me to be a better person too.”
“I love you,” Hyacinth muttered into Silvio’s chest, inhaling his salty, metallic scent that always reminded her of her childhood — the sandy ports of Benitoite, filled with barter and brine.
“I love you too,” Silvio replied as he ran his forefinger across the engagement ring that found its home on Hyacinth’s finger. It wasn’t made with the finest Obsidianite minerals, despite how easily Silvio could’ve obtained them. Instead, its band was filled with the sand of Benitoite’s beaches, and the center stone was a modest light pink diamond, exquisitely carved into a Rhodiolitian rose. It symbolized not just a union of allied nations or trading partners that helped each other, but that of a Rhodiolitian citizen and a Benitoitan prince. A union of two people — two lovers — who vow to cherish and support each other in business and in life.
