Rambling time again, been thinking about HSS again and how it's much better at slow-burn type romances than most modern Choices books. You have a variety of LIs, and while each of them can come off as somewhat "closed off" they do so in vastly different ways.
Emma is a shy wallflower who has bad luck with crushes and also struggles with her parents' divorce.
Maria is serious and stern and focused on her leadership work, overworked as she's striving for the top.
Aiden (my precious baby) is socially awkward, reserved, focused on his music and not making much time for else, and afraid of failure.
Michael (also my beloved) is aloof and more cautious about forming close relationships due to his experiences with being bullied in past schools, afraid of letting people down.
Caleb is more friendly and open but is dealing with being cheated on by his ex gf and betrayed by his childhood best friend (TNA take notes btw).
Like you just have this variety of characters who have different contexts for taking time to warm up to you. Sure, there are some similar characteristics (Emma and Aiden both being shy, Maria and Aiden both being overworked and afraid of failure), but their overall characterizations are fleshed out well and are different enough that I can distinguish them as different characters. And the MC is also really flexible, allowing us to interpret these romance dynamics however we see fit. That, and the series being 3 books long, really helps the relationship feel authentic and earned and naturally-developed.
Most modern Choices books- TNA, SB, Surrender even books I enjoyed like TPA, SW, and TCH- they just rely on the same formula of eccentric/flirty MC and broody emotionally-distant LI. COP switches it up a little with LI being the eccentric flirty one and MC being the broody one, I do like TPA MC being a little more suave James Bond-ish in nature, and TCH wasn't overly horny, but that's about it.
Not helping is the fact that these are almost all single LI books, you'd think PB making only one LI per book all the time would make it easier for them to have more variety in these LIs, but no.
HSS also has an advantage most modern books don’t: it had a very near and dear place to most (possibly all) of the staff’s hearts because the original app was a project many of them had worked on. Obviously they cared about it and they cared about the Choices series enough to try hard to do it justice.
The love interests in HSS are fleshed out as you said. The issue with most modern love interests is that for the most part, they’re very one-dimensional and don’t give us much motivation or desire to explore their routes and get to know them better.
And yeah, it sure doesn’t help that a lot of books these days are single love interest books. So unfortunately, if you don’t like the single love interest in a book? Tough luck, buddy. You probably won’t like the book itself either.
I do hope they’ll get better because 2022 was a very rough year.

top 5 ai the somnium files characters??
Tumblr media
ohoho, well lemme tell ya with great pleasure! :D
(disclaimer, I've only played through the first game, so I will only be including characters from that game and not the sequel)
5. Boss
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's in her name, she gaslights, gatekeeps, girlbosses and looks good doing it! Jokes aside though, I love how she is simultaneously secretly and subtly caring while also just. blunt and unapologetic about overworking her subordinates or unashamed to crack dirty innuendos. She has all sorts of random trinkets and junk all over her office, from boy band posters to christmas trees to party decorations. Shady but with a heart of gold. She's not quite as deep a spoiler angst rabbit hole character as some others, but she's a joy every time she's on screen, ya love to see her <3
4. Hitomi
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is my one underrated underdog pick, but ourgh, loving and supportive single mothers doing their best while keeping their dark tragic backstories private from their kids, my beloved <3 I could delve into detail just how magnificent her backstory is, from the circumstances of her being a mother to her tragic past love life, and how being a stereotypical normal boring sweet schoolteacher mother figure, she's been unfortunately involved in the most dangerous secrets but just trying to live her best life with her daughter despite it. Hitomi my beloved, seemingly simple characters with hidden depth, my beloved
3. Aiba
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She is soooo silly and also maybe the only sane person here, or at least sane in the way an AI personality would be. She is Date's AI assistant and also his prosthetic eye, and the right gif is the form she takes when she's outside of his eyesocket. The left gif is her digital avatar form. She's constantly judging Date's thoughts and actions, she gets excited about bugs, she helps Date be a better parent (more on that later), she does Hacker Skillz on a whim, she might be capable of actual love even as an AI! Truly a worthy pfp :3
2. Date
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You've heard of Love to Hate, but this guy will force you to learn what Hate to Love means. Cringy horny porn-addict failure of a person, how dare you be an amazing character with a super sad spoiler backstory and amazing angst going on. I need to push him down some stairs right now. He has a fantastic coworker good cop/bad cop dynamic going on with Aiba his eyball assistant (he's mysteriously missing an eye and Aiba is his replacement), and he's a grumpy but genuinely trying temporary guardian for a bratty middle schooler who holds him in contempt and pretends to hate him (i.e. we're talking wet cat & wet cat found family dynamics >:)
1. Mizuki
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love this child. I would do anything for this child. I would do anything to be this child. Snarky ass middle schooler. Human weapon of mass destruction because why not. Had a hard home life with her abusive or neglectful parents and is now a tsundere wet cat found family roommate with Date whom she bullies like a sibling but is still in denial about who her real family are. She carries grenades and such in her backpack even to school and she carries her favorite lead pipe with her everywhere. (spoilers) she has seen both of her parents' dead bodies and in some timelines her best friends' and favorite teacher's as well...
Ough the character depth and growth and angst and silliness of this character, the sheer badassery, her iconic-ness--oh yeah, she canonically says in game says that she respects and is inspired the LGBT community (based). You just can't get more S-tier than Mizuki. Might be favorite character of all time. I'm so excited when I eventually play the sequel because she's the protagonist in it! :D

hello cece my beautiful wonderful beloved soulmate <3
i hope you have been well and looking after yourself! i don’t want you overworking yourself 😭 but it has been two days since i have come back from my trip (i have been exhausted plus i had work and uni to catch up on) so now i am going to sit down and tell you about my trip!! please grab a cup of tea and a snack while you read :)
so i went to sydney again, and i had a much more enjoyable experience this time around. i think it was because i knew what i was getting into, and i stayed in the exact same place, so it was all familiar to me.
although i did try to use the public transport this time, instead of ubering everywhere, and the buses were so bad, but the trains were INCREDIBLE! they were double decker and the back support moved so you could have a single row or two rows of seats face each other??? SO COOL
anyways, me and my friend caught the train to the airport at 4am in the morning 😭😭😭 (and i finished work at 12am!!!!) to get our flight. once we landed in sydney, my friend wanted to get merch from the early presale stand outside the arena and we were outside in 30 degree heat FOR TWO HOURS, with our luggage. good news, my birthday is coming up and my friend didn’t know what to get me, so he bought half my merch 🤭 bad news, i’m ginger and i get sunburnt in two minutes, so think about two hours… the worst thing is we had an umbrella for sun protection, but my right arm and the back of my neck was out so they were FRIED. i’m currently peeling like a reptile but worth it
we got some food from maccas because we were dehydrated and getting heat stroke, and then checked into our room after we managed to get our stuff. we both ended up napping in the afternoon, which we were both surprised about, because i had my phone in my hand still attached to the charger next to my bed and he still had his genshin impact loaded up onto his ipad 😭😭😭
unfortunately the place i wanted to take him to for dinner, the really good japanese place from last time, was under renovation, so we had dinner elsewhere but we had such a good time the rest of our trip
because we went to see stray kids, a kpop group, we had a lot of activities we could indulge in. they had this thing called a cupsleeve event, where someone in the fandom designs a cupsleeve to represent a kpop idol’s birthday, group anniversary or in our case, coming to the city. and i got so many freebies! we went to this kpop store that doubled as a cafe and the drinks were so good! i bought way too much but i have to remind myself that i can’t get it at home 😔
we also went to the biggest bookstore i have ever seen in my life! it took up a whole floor of the shopping centre and it was brilliant. it had books upon books, categories after categories. they even had an entire chinese and japanese section! i also spent a lot of money there BUT my best find was the entire completed infernal devices manga trilogy!! it’s so beautiful and such a rare find, i grabbed it immediately. i couldn’t find the tmi graphic novels though, but they have them on their website, so i might order them in :)
alright, the main event! the concerts! so i went and saw the kpop group, stray kids, two nights in a row! it was amazing. i was and still am a huge fan of their work, but especially because they got me through a really hard time in my life and really were my serotonin while i was at school 😔 i wasn’t allowed to see them when they first came here four years ago (parents: maybe next year, they’ll come! *next year being 2020.*) so i feel like i finally made up for it.
me and my friend also matches outfits! we did black and green (the concert colours) on the first night, and red and white on the second (to match the stray kids colours). i wish i could send you photos, we looked so slay 🤩
i do not have one concert video without me screaming the lyrics (yeah the korean ones too!) in the back. but i don’t care, it was so fun, i had a blast. and it was even better because two of the members of stray kids were from sydney and they just made it feel more homely :) do not regret how much money i spent on them or the sleep i lost at all! i’m so glad i can slowly start to give myself the experiences i missed out on as a kid/teenager :’)
anyways, enough about me! how have you been? what have you been up to? how is simba? 🥺 i adore you so much and i am enclosing this letter with a warm hug <3333
hello nero my amazing perfect beloved soulmate <3
yay i’m so happy to finally hear about this trip!!! i just made myself a cup of tea and brought out some biscoff cream!!
how was the catching up part?? did you manage to catch up without exhausting yourself too much??
nero that’s so great!! i think that having a familiar surrounding is always helpful, and staying in the same place makes it all less scary somehow. i’m really happy it went much better!!
NO WAY THEY HAVE THOSE TRAINS THERE??? they look so cool!!! i’ve seen them on instagram once and i was so jealous of every city who had those trains!! you can literally choose if you want to sit alone or have company and that’s so cool!!! it’s basically a buildable environment!!! i’m getting way too excited about this lol
so you only had like three hours of sleep?? 😭😭😭😭 and you even had to stand in the heat for hours 😭😭😭 but yay!!! merch!!! that’s a really great birthday gift!!! (also when is your birthday??? only if you want to share of course <3)
anyway merch is so amazing and so expensive. this has got to be one of the best presents ever!!! even if it means you’re skinning like a reptile now lol at least it’s just two small spots instead of your whole self 😂 but i get the struggle. i’m not ginger but my skin is so light i always get sunburnt in 0.5 seconds too. definitely not fun, but worth it for some merch :D
that was probably a really fun situation to wake up to, but you both deserved a nap for catching a bus at 4am!!! especially since you had only a few hours of sleep after work!! at least you were rested enough to really enjoy the trip!!
oh no 😭😭 i’m still dreaming about that place!! i went to a my favorite japanese restaurant in my city a few days ago and i really wanted to try that beverage you told me about but i was driving so i couldn’t 😭 i hope this other restaurant was really good too though!!
no way!!! nero this is all way too cool!!! i’m so happy it was so fun and there were so many things to do!!! also this cupsleeves event sounds so cool!! i’m so happy nero, you’re making my day just by telling me about all these freebies and amazing drinks!! and you know i’m always gonna be the little devil on your shoulder telling you that spending money is good and you deserve all that amazing stuff :))
the tid manga trilogy??? how is that even possible omg you can’t find that anywhere!!!! i’m so jealous, i wanna live in this bookstore now 🥺 it’s got to be so amazing!! (you always find the best bookstores, i had no doubt there would be one in this letter too and i was so excited to read about it!!) and let me know if you do order the tmi graphic novels!! i’ve been trying to collect those too hehe
the fact that *next year* was 2020 is so painful. but you saw them two nights in a row!!! that’s amazing!! and it must have been so good to see them after so long, after they’d been by your side in a really tough time 🥹 i’m so happy you got to finally see them live!!
also, the matching outfits?? I LOVE THAT!!! i bet you looked so slay!!! that’s literally the best idea for what to wear to a concert!!!
nero i’m so so happy for you!!! you’ve made my whole day, i’m not even joking!! i’m so happy you’re finally getting to enjoy trips and concerts you couldn’t before!! and this one really sounded so perfect!!! also the videos with you screaming at the top of your lungs to every song are literally the best. i love it when i rewatch a video from a concert and i can hear myself screaming and crying and dying more than i can hear the band or the singer. it just makes me live all those memories and those amazing feelings again!!!
the money spent on this is totally worth it!!! and you can sleep now, uni can wait lol really nero i’m so happy this trip was so good!!! i’m so happy for you!!!
i’m good!! i got three days off from work this week so that was great, and i started to reread chain of iron so that i can reread chain of thorns right after :) i miss them so much already 🥲
anyway i just booked a trip for may, because a friend is coming to visit me and i’m gonna be off work for two weeks so i’m really looking forward to it and now i just wanna skip work and plan the itinerary 😂 and i want to book more trips too. which isn’t great because my bank account is already crying and begging me to stop buying stuff. did i tell you i got the illumicrate edition of chain of thorns with the alternative dust jackets? yeah so my bank account still hasn’t forgiven me for it :,)
simba is also doing really good, he’s eating a lot and sleeping a lot as usual 😌
also, ever since you told me about the rina sawayama concert, and because you always talked so much about her, i kinda started listening to her music a lot more and i’m obsessed with some songs now!!! i adore her style so thank you for this new obsession :>
i’m enclosing a warm hug for you too and a little bouquet of flowers <3

Backstory
She was Salacia’s consort in a past life, unfortunately, she was slain in a siege alongside their unborn child. He tried to resurrect her using a certain kind of purple magic...it did not end well. Cordelia would sometimes have past life nightmares about this with zero context as to what was happening.
She and Salacia met by chance in 1965, back then being a mere law school student; while Salacia was happy to see his beloved wife again...this time he had more ulterior motives convinced that it was part of the Prophecy (if still having to create the Sal persona for obvious reasons). Which he was right, but for the wrong reasons since Charles was an accidental pregnancy so she had to drop out of school and the two had to elope. Her parents were pissed of course and they did not see Cordelia or Charles until he abandoned the family some five or six years later.
Even though Salacia can technically be in two places at once it's pretty taxing (as well as worries that his other self was starting to develop a personality and will of his own) and eventually just to started to realize the more practical problems of his facade such as...oh yeah and his presence having bits of the plague that cause sickness if not death in some people to the point where people assumed for years that Charles was chronically ill. He might've been an asshole for abandoning them, but financially supported them in secret and had them under surveillance by marking them as "people of interest". Although even if he didn't have high hope for him, he had quite a few other children on standby.
Mysterious checks from the government she didn't question aside it was a bit difficult being a single mother in the 1970s albeit was able to get work as a paralegal at the slightly dubious Ensiferum & Associates. So because of this, she was pretty much what you think of when "Gen X mom" comes to mind, with Charles being very much a latchkey kid who more or less raised himself at points. Not for lack of trying since she was capable of being a very loving mother, but was severely overworked and self-medicated with alcohol to cope with the stress of working as an unmarried woman during Mad Men times and general untreated mental health issues. In fact, it was to the point where Charles feeling the need to take care of other people's needs above his own partially explains why he's slightly messed up as an adult. And yet she's among one of the more competent employees at the firm when sober (gee why does that sound familiar?).
Was generally supportive of Charles's goals, but was terrified of him abandoning her much like his father so she definitely didn't take Charles heading off to boarding school well (although she at least had the decency to not say it out loud) and was enough of a mess to require intervention so she at least mellowed out in her final years before peacefully passing in 1993, her lifespan cut tragically short due to a combination of the Salacia plague still affecting her body years later and alcohol abuse.
...which is the version I usually go with in my fics, but personally, I think it's funnier and opens more story potential if she survives to the series' present day, but is just locked out of the loop of the whole "son being the manager of the world's largest band/economic force and later a cult leader" thing. Like I'd probably figured she get along with most of the Dethklok moms (except for maybe Molly but even then because the latter is a massive hypocrite), and Dethklok for themselves for that matter, especially Toki, which Charles would be a bit conflicted about the latter even if she is trying to make up for her previous faults as a mother. I guess for now it's sort of diverging paths, but at least until the movie comes out "dead mom" is the main timeline for my fics.
Overall Charles has a...complicated view of his mother, on one hand, her neglectful parenting did cause a fair amount of emotional scarring that hasn't healed even decades later and severely affected his interpersonal relationships even as an adult, but on the other hand, was at least aware of her struggles with the benefit of hindsight and wouldn't be half the man he was today without her influence.

What are the 5 Golden Rules of Dog Training?
Tumblr media
Training your dog can be quite fun, especially if you do it right. It also provides your dog with a lot of benefits like mental stimulation and learning proper etiquette and discipline. If you plan to teach your dog a trick or two, you’ll need to remember the 5 Golden Rules to dog training. These rules will serve as your guide in providing what your dog needs. They also help you ensure that the training goes as smoothly as possible, allowing you and your dog to enjoy every step of the way.
#1. Get to know your dog
Every dog has a different temperament, learning style, and drive for certain things. One dog might have a hard time picking up new tricks, while another has no problem at all. With this in mind, you need to pay extra attention to your dog’s needs and learning characteristics. Here are a few things that you’ll need to assess:
Obedience – A good way to test your dog’s potential for obedience training is by lifting him/her with the legs dangling in the air. Then, maintain eye contact and see what response you’d get. If your dog bows down or lowers his/her eyes, you won’t have a hard time instilling obedience. On one hand, if your pup tries to wiggle away, you’ll need extra patience during training.
Sociability – Training your dogs to be social is critical to creating a strong bond. Unfortunately, not every dog is sociable. Some had a tough time in kennels, forcing them to become aggressive or anxious when they’re around people. Be sure to assess your dog’s social skills before you start introducing them to other dogs or other members of the family.
Openness – This refers to how your dog perceives changes. It could refer to his/her curiosity levels, excitability and resourcefulness. Generally, curious dogs are relatively easy to train because they always want to try out new things.
Neuroticism – A study shows that a dog owner’s neuroticism can significantly impact a dog’s behavior. Most of the time, dog parents with high scores for neuroticism have more aggressive dogs. It may help to look into this aspect if you want to build a harmonious relationship during and after the training.
#2. Make it an enjoyable experience
Just like in teaching young children, you need to keep dog training sessions fun. Otherwise, it becomes a source of stress for your beloved fur buddy. At the same time, you must find balance in incorporating discipline and proper behavior.
For example, instead of sticking to the usual routine where you say a command and hand over treats, why not try to improvise a bit? You can alternately use treats, verbal praises, or even belly rubs to reward your dog. Using dog games to teach lessons may also come in handy. Whatever approach works for your dog, we recommend continuing it. Then, you can experiment all over again until you create a fun yet effective system.
#3. Consistency is vital to your training success
Consistency matters a lot in training your dog. If you want to teach a lesson quickly and effectively, you need to ensure that you’re using consistent actions or commands. For example, if you’re going to teach your dog how to sit, make sure to stick with the same verbal or physical cues. Otherwise, you end up confusing him/her. It’s also helpful to maintain a schedule, especially for feeding, playing, and walking. It helps create that routine that will guide them every single day.
Another way you can maintain consistency is to keep everyone in your family up to date on the training progress. More importantly, they have to know the rules you’re trying to set for the dogs. For example, everyone needs to avoid petting the dog whenever he/she jumps or whines. This will only reinforce destructive behaviors.
#4. Learn when to call it a day
Dogs get tired too! Eventually, when attention span lapses, they no longer feel interested in listening to your commands or following your instructions. They either get too bored or feel overworked, decreasing their ability to perceive your lessons.
While it’s tempting to keep each training session longer, you need to keep it brief each day to ensure that you don’t overwhelm your dog. Ideally, each lesson should last no more than 15 to 20 minutes each day. If you go beyond the suggested duration, your dog may no longer be as receptive. Give your dog ample time to rest. To reinforce what you taught him/her, you’ll need to repeat the routine each day.
#5. Avoid punishing your dog at all costs!
The last thing you want is to push your dog to his/her limits through punishment. It’s not going to help in instilling the lessons needed to improve your dog’s behavior. It can turn even the most well-mannered dog into an aggressive one. Additionally, it won’t help you cultivate a harmonious relationship with your fur baby.
Instead of resorting to punishment, use positive reinforcement to teach your pup. It’s proven more effective in training any breed of dog. Encourage them through verbal or physical cues. For example, you can give them a belly rub or shower your pup with cuddles and love. You can say “good boy!” or “good job!” to show your approval.
The better cues you use to associate with a particular action or command, the faster you can teach your dog new tricks and skills. Find the best approaches to use, and feel free to modify them according to how your dog responds.
Get the best training for your beloved fur baby today!
Providing quality training for your dog can make a lot of difference in your relationship. You can help your dog feel comfortable around other animals and socialize with other people around them. Teaching them good behavior also helps them stay away from trouble. We hope that the top 5 golden rules for dog training we shared above can help you get on the right track.

Book Recommendations: More Wayward Women in Literature
Nightbitch by Rachel Yoder
At home full-time with her two-year-old son, an artist finds she is struggling. She is lonely and exhausted. She had imagined - what was it she had imagined? Her husband, always travelling for his work, calls her from faraway hotel rooms. One more toddler bedtime, and she fears she might lose her mind.
Instead, quite suddenly, she starts gaining things, surprising things that happen one night when her child will not sleep. Sharper canines. Strange new patches of hair. New appetites, new instincts. And from deep within herself, a new voice...
The Woman in the Purple Skirt by Natsuko Imamura
Almost every day, the Woman in the Purple Skirt buys a single cream bun and goes to the park, where she sits on a bench to eat it as the local children taunt her. She is observed at all times by the undetected narrator, the Woman in the Yellow Cardigan. From a distance the Woman in the Purple Skirt looks like a schoolgirl, but there are age spots on her face, and her hair is dry and stiff. Like the Woman in the Yellow Cardigan, she is single, she lives in a small, run-down apartment, and she is short on money. The Woman in the Yellow Cardigan lures her to a job where she herself works, as a hotel housekeeper; soon the Woman in the Purple Skirt is having an affair with the boss. Unfortunately, no one knows or cares about the Woman in the Yellow Cardigan. That's the difference between her and the Woman in the Purple Skirt.
Chemistry by Weike Wang
At first glance, the quirky, overworked narrator of this novel seems to be on the cusp of a perfect life: she is studying for a prestigious PhD in chemistry that will make her Chinese parents proud (or at least satisfied), and her successful, supportive boyfriend has just proposed to her. But instead of feeling hopeful, she is wracked with ambivalence. The long demanding hours at the lab have created an exquisite pressure cooker, and she doesn't know how to answer the marriage question. When it all becomes too much and her life plan veers off course, she finds herself on a new path of discoveries about everything she thought she knew.
The Pisces by Melissa Broder
Lucy has been writing her dissertation about Sappho for thirteen years when she and Jamie break up. After she hits rock bottom in Phoenix, her Los Angeles-based sister insists Lucy housesit for the summer—her only tasks caring for a beloved diabetic dog and trying to learn to care for herself. Annika’s home is a gorgeous glass cube atop Venice Beach, but Lucy can find no peace from her misery and anxiety—not in her love addiction group therapy meetings, not in frequent Tinder meetups, not in Dominic the foxhound’s easy affection, not in ruminating on the ancient Greeks. Yet everything changes when Lucy becomes entranced by an eerily attractive swimmer one night while sitting alone on the beach rocks.

Note
This is another song I associate with my security breach au, specifically with Gregory. I honestly find this to be one of the most emotionally gut-wrenching and evocative songs in the whole album especially when you can make out the lyrics of the bridge right before the final chorus, specifically the way you can just hear her wail after finishing the bridge with “I LOVE YOU” fucking hits so hard
"I love you" / I try to hold onto the meaning of the words / As we fall deeper into nothingness / I try to hold my breath / I try to reach your hand / But we cannot connect
It is a horrible truth that cannot be unseen / The nihilistic sea / The non-existence beneath your skin / And inside every single comfort / Your face / As I try to repair the meaning of / “I LOVE YOU”
With the whole song being about the horror and sheer sadness that comes in the face of catastrophe the rest of the album sounds so casual about (the utter destruction of one’s entire world, mortality, catastrophic failure and a truth that guts you), it reminds me of the almost fridge horror in Security Breach. The game isn’t scary, the story it tells isn’t scary, but then you really… think about it. You play as a deeply traumatized homeless orphan just trying to survive in a world that seems against him, unable to trust anyone, all sense of childlike innocence someone at his age should have absolutely ripped out of his hands and twisted into instruments to kill, the target of a serial child murderer for the mere crime of having no safe place to go, no adults to trust, no one to help him. He can call for help all he wants, but it doesn’t matter, because no one will listen. If anyone does, they will only hurt him more. The horror and danger Gregory suffers doesn’t read well through the eyes of the audience, but this is the kind of trauma that absolutely shakes someone and destroys them for life. His world is ending, or it feels like it is. Everything is out to kill him. The very sky he stands under echoes the bloodred glare of Vanny’s glowing eyes. His sister’s eyes, in this AU. He doesn’t recognize her anymore, not the monster she’s become. She was the one thing he had left and now his whole world is crumbling and burning under the bloodred sky occupied by her gaze, watching and stalking him like a predator.
But it’s not that he thinks she’s bad. He desperately doesn’t want to. To the point that he can barely connect the rabbit-masked woman who tried to stab him to death in his sleep to his beloved big sister. So he can’t even begin to process it. He just so desperately wants to reach out and find his sister, the real one, under the mess of a horrible life that doesn’t, does not, will never care about him.
The instrumental fits the aesthetic of SB really well as well as the vocals of the first singer, and as someone who was an orphan as a baby I think that is the true horror of SB. I was abandoned shortly after being born, and was placed in an orphanage where I pretty much had to fend for myself. My parents told me that I was basically "the runt of the litter" since I was smaller than the other kids there, and was completely quiet, never crying or drawing any attention to myself, so the already overworked staff would pay attention to the other kids. This is where my parents think I developed my selective mutism from. I was incredibly underweight, and could barely perform any basic motor functions when my dad came to take me home after being adopted. There was a very real possibility that I could've died if my parents never found out about me, and adopted me. My situation is vastly different from Gregory's, but just the fear that any day could be your last is something that hits me extremely hard, since just like Gregory if I did end up dying, or something happening to me, then there would've been no one looking for us, or missing us.
I think that's why I still think SB is scary, to a different extent.

Tumblr media
NEJI
Tumblr media
you’ve been pondering how to break the exciting news that you were expecting twins with the love of your life, neji, for days now
but what you didn’t realize was that he already had a sneaking suspicion that you weren’t only eating for two
observant as ever, he’s noticed how exaggerated your pregnancy symptoms were: extreme morning sickness (he always held your hair back), severe fatigue (massages and back rubs were always in order) and even as he lays on your stomach, he hears... a second heartbeat?
as you’re thinking about how to break the news, he’s also wondering if you’ve realized that you’re having twins
it was your anniversary a few days later, and you had decided to break the exciting news to him through a special treat
setting four steaming bowls of his favorite food, hot soba, on the kitchen table, you awaited the arrival of your husband
“(y/n), i’m home!” neji called out down the hallway, slipping off his shoes before he caught you standing there in the dining room
his eyes widened in surprise before melting into the most heartwarming gazes you’ve ever seen as he made his way over to you, wrapping his strong arms around your frail body
“happy anniversary, (y/n).”
you couldn’t see it, but neji’s eyes widened at the sight behind you, over your shoulder that his head was resting on
four bowls of his favorite food? why four?
but then he realized, pulling back quicker than light as he held onto your shoulders and stared into your eyes
“you know? about the twins?”
a radiant smile spread from your glowing cheeks to your ears as your eyes widened in surprise; neji already knew?
but of course he did, he was so observant as a husband: always gifting you things that you’ve pined over but never actually said that you’ve wanted out loud, taking care of that one pesky chore you can never bring yourself to do; he was the absolute perfect husband for you
a grin formed on neji’s face as he pulled your body into his once again, embracing you as tight as your enlarged body would let him
“we’re the luckiest parents in the world,” he murmured into your ear, softly smoothing your hair
“no,” you replied, smiling into his embrace. “i’m the luckiest wife in the world.”
the dinner was spectacular, as you and your husband enjoyed a wholesome meal for two (or four!)
after confirming that the two of you were going to be raising twins instead of just one baby, it was time to prepare double time
luckily for you, neji is nothing if not prepared
he’s got a running checklist of things he needs double of; double the cribs, double the diapers, double the bottles, double the clothes, double the—
poor man is overworking himself, but he’d work as many hours as he needed to to ensure that you and your new family will have the best first years of your life
he was getting anxious as you neared the time of your labor, as he kept checking that the house was babyproofed, the bottles were the right size, the food was the correct brand, etc.
it was endearing, seeing him so worried, but only because he cared for you that much
needless to say, the moment you went into labor, he arrived at the hospital in record time
neji realized he was worried for nothing as the birth went smoothly as could be, and when you finally brought your two bundles of joy home, he couldn’t believe that they were actually part of him
it made him so happy to be raising two little twins with his favorite person in the world
all the diapers in the world couldn’t prepare him for the delight of parenthood!
GAARA
Tumblr media
you felt the cool gel spread across your enlarged stomach before the ultrasound crackled to life
you, gaara, and the doctor all watched with bated breaths as a white blob began to form amidst the dark abyss of your tummy
tears began to spring to your eyes as your hand instinctively moved to touch your stomach; this was your baby. inside of you was you and gaara’s own little bundle of joy :,)
gaara’s calming hand slipped into yours as the two of you gazed at the screen in wonder
“look!” you cried, pointing with your other hand at the absence of... a certain body part. “it’s a baby girl!”
“that’s right,” the doctor grinned. “congratulations, you two, you’re having a girl!”
but then, the doctor started to press your stomach at a different angle with a furrowed brow
“what is it, doctor? is there something wrong?” you felt panic begin to rise in your stomach. your baby?
a small smile emerged on the doctor’s face as they pointed to the screen displaying the ultrasound, “see for yourself.”
confused but more at ease, you watched as the tiny white blob on the screen moved slowly to the side to reveal... another one?
your heart rate began to quicken as you turned, shell-shocked, to your husband
the redhead’s face was stunned, his eyes blown wide as he raised a finger at the display in front of him.
“t-t-there’s... there’s two... of them....”
his pale green eyes locked onto yours, which were brimming with overjoyous tears
“gaara...” you reached for his hand once more. “we’re having twins!”
you swore his own eyes were filled with tears as he wrapped his arms around your frail, weak body, pressing a kiss to the nape of your neck
you clung onto your husband, a soon-to-be father of two, for dear life, laughing and gasping for breath as you realized that you not only had one— but two bundles of joy in your stomach
“congratulations again, you two, this one’s a boy!”
after a rough birth, your two feisty little sand twins are the rowdiest bunch in the barrel
clambering, climbing on top of their stoic dad, pulling at his hair, gnawing at his fingers
your beloved husband is their personal jungle gym
it’s amusing, watching gaara slowly (but surely) learn and navigate through the ups and downs of new parenthood
but above the sleepless nights, the ceaseless crying, the endless messes, he’s especially grateful that you’re the one he’s experiencing it all with :)
KAKASHI
Tumblr media
you clutched the single smoke bomb tightly in your hand, smiling at your family, your friends, and your husband kakashi
the long-anticipated gender reveal of your baby was about to take place, and you couldn’t be more excited!
at the count of three, you pulled the pin and tossed the harmless bomb onto the ground
instantly, the air filled with a pink plume of smoke! squeals and cheers swept throughtout the crowd, and your eyes lit up with joy as your husband returned the gaze
you were going to raise the finest kunoichi there ever was
but then gasps sounded throughout the crowd as you turned to the still-smoking bomb
it was turning... blue?
your hands flew to cover your mouth as you gasped, turning to kakashi
twins?
kakashi wasn’t one to be caught off guard too often, but this totally got him
his eyes widened in surprise before the crowd began to cheer, applaud, and holler at the exciting news
“twins!” you cried, rushing over to envelop kakashi in a tight embrace
a baby girl and a baby boy... who would’ve thought?
while you’re freaking out about having everything in order, getting double the supplies, kakashi is cool as a cucumber (as always)
he’s always telling you to relax, that he’s got it all under control, and he does
you couldn’t ask for a better husband
seriously, his masseuse skills are like magic
after a long day of tireless cooking, cleaning, working, and stressing, coming home to a massage with kakashi is such a treat
he always makes sure you’re comfortable during the day, fetching you water, helping you to the bathroom, cooking up all your weird cravings
he’d be such a wonderful father, who are we kidding
teaches them important life lessons and raises them to be independent, powerful ninja
but also lets them have loads of fun, teasing them, tickling them, playing with them
its the most exhilarating feeling in the world to come home from an exhausting day of work to find kakashi passed out on the couch with each twin tucked under each of his arms after a long day of playing together
there’s absolutely no one else you’d rather spend the joy of parenthood with!
Tumblr media

~   Jeon Jungkook was a lightweight champion a so-called minute legend, rising to stardom rather quickly while basking in wads of cash and pools of opportunity, therefore, leaving his right hand woman y/n to wallow in the shallows unforgivably with a relationship that pleads for more and a tension that tightens by the minute.
~ Includes - Angst, an angry Jungkook. Drug consumption and neglect. Tears, pain. Slight fluff and rough tension, foolishness, cussing and self doubt, slight kissing and mixed emotions.
~ This is my first long one shot.

Jungkook was anguished, unable to comprehend the atrocities he just fulfilled in front of everyone. His anger often speculated multiple things but never did they assume they’re most beloved lightweight competitor had a source for all his rage. The fire he lit distinguished itself in his burning temper while his hand was thrust into a crowd of roaring spectators, not far from him a man laid bloodied and somewhat busted in defeat.
His opponent had muttered something about his best friend, how she would be fine under his fitted sheets with muffled moans and even if the trash talk was embedded within the arena, the amount of disgust he felt hearing those prudent words escape the man’s mouth had oiled something unforgivable inside of himself. You, of course, didn’t hear a word, unsure of your ground while you watched your childhood best friend curl his fist tightly before shoving it into the knockout zone of his opponents face, a gasp was withdrawn from your mouth and you abruptly stood with a cheer.
Yet jungkook had let a scoff escape his lips seeing the man behind him lay in his own pool of misconception, cocky it was to even consider being proud but he was nonetheless. However, this gained him the name one-minute legend, sounded like some sick perverted nickname a pubescent teen gift they’re former in hopes their self-esteem declines.
Jungkook had dashed from the stage into your arms eagerly, you both shared a heartwarming embrace as you shouted praises into his ear “You did it, kook!!! You won!! I knew you had it in you, god I’m so proud of you” his strong arms rested around your waist, tightening by the minute in fear that the spoken words his opponent shared would reach your ears. Yet that day was the destination for his publicity, gaining a name for himself also gained him a renowned position in the hierarchy of boxers.
This led to you having to constantly stick to his side like glue, he requested you be there as support and being his best friend how could you deny the luxury. Although this also led your minimal crush blossoming into something more and you couldn’t be more enraged with yourself then now, his fame was admirable but it shifted something within him.
“I assure you, their only childhood friends. It would be incompetent for him to settle so early” Yuna laughed whilst distracting the publishers of the minor county, her small glance wasn’t missed as she sorrowfully shot you a distant look. Yuna time and again proved herself worthy of managing Jungkook's matches and doing so with gratitude yet she was also your standing figure right now, Jungkook trained like there was no tomorrow and being careful of his enraged outburst they had called you in hopes of slowing his dedication down to a workable pace.
“How long has he been like this,” you asked, genuinely curious about the pertain able answer Yuna was about to give you, she seethed in an eager breath but hesitated towards the end “Yuna, I need to know. He hasn’t contacted me in days and for that to happen- I’m sorry just tell me how long he’s been training himself?” you continued once more, foot desperately tapping at the ground with anxiety filling every fiber of your being.
“He’s been going since 2 in the morning, a few hours after you left for work” she informed sadly, Yuna thought of Jungkook as a younger brother and to see him in such a distasteful state was heartbreaking for her, that and she hadn’t slept in the past two days due to the income of numerous calls and agents seeking interest in Jungkook’s formidable skills which were clearly shown in his iconic match a few months ago.
“He’s in there, right?” you countered, finger pointed to the door while waiting for Yuna to nod her head and gesture for you to go. Yuna waved you off as you walked tediously towards the door, finally able to grasp the heavy breaths and smooth punches escalating every running second just from the door which made you curious how beyond the solid wood looked?
You opened the door with a light push simultaneously you met the sight of Jungkook sweating pools of his own hard work, T-shirt disregarded to the floor and his wounds fleshing badly causing a small yelp to escape your mouth, the room was spacious, filling but a mere part of the building still, it was his to keep. Weights resided within every corner with a matte black for simplicity and not far towards the middle of the room sat a match ground with black ropes embracing it.
“Jungkook” you frowned, closing the door from the eye of the public as you walked towards Jungkook who was high in intensity, his curled fist hadn’t loosened and due to the number of overwhelming matches, he was presumably growing addicted to the adrenaline.
“No, I need to train” Jungkook grumbled, inhaling a deep long breath before he began punching the sand-filled bag once more, you removed the sneakers from your feet before stepping on to the mat respectfully“Jungkook, listen to me. You need rest and I’m not leaving until you stop what you’re doing and go home. Everyone is worried about you especially me” you pleaded heavily slowly approaching Jungkook.
His tattoos glistened under the gleaming light and the highlighted sweat, bicep tensing with every punch thrown chaotically “Go home y/n, rest or something. You’re coming to my match with me tonight?” his demanding question broke in exhaustion towards the end of his sentence, alike his notions you also cried for his attention “what if I said no, hmm?” This made him abruptly stop, a frown knitted between his two strong brows.
You’d never miss one of his matches, even as gullible children you attended every fight of his. Often going with his parents who kindly offered their protection and an escort to and from your parents home, Jungkook, however, couldn’t think about a day where you didn’t come with him everywhere, you were his best friend. The only person he willingly let succumb to his unearthly chaos, someone who could calm him on his cold nights because without you he wouldn’t be in a position that he proudly took today, literally.
“Exactly, now pack your shit Jungkook. You have a match tonight and god forbid you faint before you even reach the octagon” you spoke with an unbreakable tone, wishing to see that soft smile he once wore like a crown. The tips of his lips curled slightly but never did it fully reach his alluring eyes, he was reaching his peak publicity and you weren’t going to stop him.
Jungkook huffed using his injured hand to run through his thick, wet locks. He stood there, unclothed with a prominent aura as his tall body faced you with a perplexed look floating through his curious yet hooded hues “Come on kook, grab your things” your voice was soft and angelic, not too rough on the edges once you approached Jungkook who signed diligently to himself.
Hands caressing his cheeks while biting his lip in temptation “you can train tomorrow, you’re already doing amazing don’t overwork yourself.” Your soft touch slid down his forearm into his hands “Okay!” Jungkook looked down at you with an unreadable look composing with shivers running up and down his body as he repeated your words with a bright smile “Okay, chubs”.
He was a force to be reckoned with, founding his matches with the deepest temperamental attributes he could find within himself. He treated the ring with a mindset which he releases all his impending emotions out into the world, he had issues. Anger was only one soiling in his garden of mentality.
Almost every week you treated him to a few lunches, oftentimes he would reside in your embrace towards the end of the night where the sunny dues hollowed behind the hills and the callous moon shone with a luminescent light peeking through your barreled window cell. The lace depicted multiple floral patterns that when the moon was in the right place, shone against his warm honey coated skin in all its magnificence.
His skin was torn and rough yet held an undertone of purity, sheered in white but stained in blood. Night after night you focused on repairing his wounds, some were mild and others would be considered endangering, though it only got worse with time. Day after day his name was ringing bells on everyone’s doorstep, Jeon Jungkook the knockout champion was what they called him.
He was raised in the chain of renowned people, with this sudden title came money and fame. Jungkook earned a decent amount before but now, it was sickening. You were proud of him and discussed the sudden fame he tampered with, he promised nothing would happen. His attitude wouldn’t change yet that’s where you were foolish enough to believe his innocent intentions.
“The winner is, Jeon Jungkook the knockout king” was looping every match followed by cheers that could be heard miles away, Jungkook would embrace you every single game, although hours later he reeked of sweat and intoxication, the callous hand of money overwhelmed him to a certain point where he no longer understood what to do with it. Money, cars and homes all laid like dimes in his hands, so he extended his degree. Spending money on you like a little barbie doll, gifting some to his parents and splashing it on awful things.
That didn’t stop you from loving him endlessly, even when it hurt you more to do so.
You had been busy at the bar you worked at, taking up double shifts when the offer was placed not having the courage to face this new publicity seeking best friend of yours. The way he downed bottles of the substance that earned you a living was cruel, never did you think the craft he dedicated himself too would put him in such a position.
“Hey, your phone has been going off for the past hour? You should really answer it” Jihoon called, the phone you had bought was impenetrable in his hands. You shrugged off his advances for you to answer Jungkook's pleads, even so Yuna’s too and probably many more people seeking your company.
“They can wait” you replied dully, shoving a bright smile onto your face. It was almost like Jungkook had finally noticed your distaste for his actions. “Surely” Jihoon rolled his eyes not liking the disliking tone seeping from your venomous mouth, change was bound to come for you and Jungkook but never did you think it would be so soon.
“How’s your boyfriend been?” Jihoon cooed making you gulp at the name “he’s not my boyfriend Jihoon, he’s just a childhood best friend is all” you spoke through a tremble, you were soon succumbing to the desirable thoughts leaking past your mind every running minute. The hatred you felt knowing the love you had for Jungkook was only ever growing, it was like walking through a haunted forest, not knowing when you were going to be pushed away.
“Whatever floats your boat, darl” his tone was lavish, almost too lavish. Pointing a finger towards the answer button on your phone leaving no room for your pleads to comfort his brass decision. Jungkook sighed hearing the phone being answered, erupting a certain taste for whom wrapped his knuckles now. He missed you, not knowing the decisions he made were pushing you further and further from his reach but you couldn’t be too devious to believe he would let such a gem escape him.
He would be lying if he said tears didn’t escape his doe eyes every now and then, the parties, heathen bound air with a tinge of drugs seeping through his skin could never replace the warmth you offered him, comforting his insecurities in his darkest hours.
“Y/n” his breathing was uneven, erratic and almost death defying. He’d been running, training for hours on end hoping you would burst through the door claiming his acts as a monstrosity. Yet to his demise, the door rattled before the wind. Somewhat bringing comfort to his clouded mind “Hey, kook. What’s wrong? “You managed to say with eyes closed in disbelief towards your former workmate.
Jungkook whimpered as he laid alone against the wall of the gym, his eyes examining the promise ring he’d bought you “Kook?” you called again only meeting the short response of leveled breathing, worry was churning your stomach and heat raised to your cheeks “Jungkook, I have work. Call me back” and with that you impulsively hung up the line.
Jihoon shook his head, you dropped your phone onto the bench while grumbling “what?” Jihoon laughed, smiling towards another customer who took the drink leaving the bar empty for you both to conversate openly “Why don’t you tell him?” he asked.
“Tell him what? He can’t even talk properly without slurring cause he’s so bloody intoxicated all the time” it was a painful truth, to cover up his failure he chose a path of addiction and the side he would reside on your bed was left to wallow in the tender touch of winter.
“Tell him that you love him?!?” Jihoon shouted, gaining the eyes of the vigilant visitors. Some began to point to your direction constantly discussing your name very faintly, just like that you were known as his best friend. Something you’ll forever be and that was the painstaking truth.
“You know I can’t do that, Jihoon. No matter how much I love him, how reckless he is, I will always only be the best friend, his right hand girl. It sucks but there’s nothing I can do about it, because no matter how hard I wanna stop feeling, He’ll always have those alluring eyes staring at me, giving me hope” you breathed, tears brimming the edges of your eyes
…….
The sudden knock against your home door woke you from your sleep, glancing towards the broken clock sitting beside your bed as the time read 2.45 am. The knock rung continuously following a few sounds of metal being fiddled with, the struck noise made you rise tirelessly from your slumber, curling a tight hand around the minimal pocket knife placed under your pillow for protection.
The perpetrator groaned, wailing in agony for the door to relish under the mellow light once you turned it on feeling oddly familiarized with the tone. Hand brisking the handle with a tedious turn in your wrist, a heavy breath migrated from your throat with the knife heaving in your sea of worries. pulling the door open, following the broken wood came Jungkook's drunk state, his ear was solid against the door listening to any footsteps you might have produced through your journey, perching himself against the door towards the sudden pull.
“Have you been drinking, again?” you prompted first in worry, Jungkook was slurring through his words. noticing his car parked across your lawn and the door of his new BMW was opened, left to close itself. He was leant up against your door with an incurable pain in his eyes and a bottle raised to your face “why have you been ignoring me, chubs” Jungkook slurred tripping over his own feet, the hoodie seized on his ruffled hair almost sliding off with every harsh move he made. You ignored his incoherent whines, taking long strides to his car. The smell was revolting, almost like an intoxicating drug was thrown around carelessly wafting into the air of dampened clothes and alcoholic beverages. Not seeing your former for the past week only for him to come barging into your home at early hours of dusk
You turned his engine off and continued to close his doors safely, Jungkook had caught himself on the step lying face-first on the floor. The sudden impact caused an array of wounds to crack open leaving his beaten face bloodied in injuries “Come on, kook. Let’s get you cleaned up, alright” you gasped, lending a hand around his neck after he tousled on the floor with a groan.
Jungkook didn’t have it in himself to fight, shimmering under the bright light was a bed comfortable enough for him to fall into a comatose state.
“God, look at you. You're a mess” You reached behind your small cupboard grabbing a medical kit, leaning in unconsciously, hence being used to bandaging his wounds you began applying a decent amount of ointment and alcohol to his face after cleansing it gently with some water. Jungkook had slightly sobered up, yet he didn’t speak.
Admiring the proximity as you were inches away from his face, peeking from beneath his bangs at you tiredly apprehending his injuries with delicacy. It was all sudden, his strong breath hit your face as he spoke, this time clearly and fully demanding your attention “why have you been ignoring me?” he rumbled slowly
He clearly hadn’t been paying attention towards himself lately, there were multiple reasons as to why you no longer comforted him on his off nights “Just rest up” you replied, ignoring his silent plea which fell on deaf ears “No, y/n. I need answers, you stopped showing up to training. You stopped answering my calls and I’m lucky if I even get a reply to my messages. I’m sure if I had a match this week you wouldn't even show up. So tell me, I have the right to know why you're being so distant.” Jungkook growled, his overflowing bottle of ridicule was filling to a brim
You pinched the bridge of your nose tentatively examining his face “just look at you Jungkook, it’s like I don’t even know you anymore” the truth was weightless on your tongue, darting a tongue across your lips, glistening them in saliva causing Jungkook to stare down at your lips before darting his eyes back onto your face. His eyes wide in frustration “I could say the same for you” he scoffed.
“you show up to my house at quarter to three in the morning drunk off your ass. Thinking I’m gonna embrace you with all my love, you’ve been doing this for the past three months, Jungkook. Three!! Of course I’m gonna be worried about you but I can’t do it anymore” your heart hammered against your chest and the unreadable look on his face was horrifying.
Jungkook was lost for words, just about to defend his acts before you shut him up again “Remember when we were kids, you promised you wouldn’t hurt me, ever, now look at you. It pains me more to ignore you, but right now I can’t even look at you without wanting to cry” Jungkook had stood up with his intricate hair shielding his sight, ready to face the consequences of his actions towards the one he silently loved from afar.
“You said you would always be there for me now look, where were you huh? Where was that kookie who couldn’t even watch a romance movie without crying. You think ignoring you was the worst, you left me every single night to go get high off your kite only to come weeping back into my arms for me to face the harsh aftermath kook. I’m sick of it” Your voice was shouting, the clouded thoughts struck Jungkook harshly as his nostrils flared in anger.
You stood up, matching his posture. Your hand clasp around his chest with your head hung low “I love you Jungkook, but you can’t even be there for me. I’m tired and you don’t even notice, I’m just some punching bag for your emotions like a fucking idiot. But you know I won’t leave you and that’s the messed up part” your tears caressed your cheeks, rapidly seeking an output.
Jungkook leaned his head back suddenly feeling the weight of his loss crash down on his harder than ever, reaching around your nape to embrace your body in his. Seizing your fist in his open palms leading your struggling arms around his tiny waist.
He rested his head on top of yours, the hot tears pooling around his hoodie “I’m sorry, I don’t know what I was thinking y/n.” was all he managed to say, in all honesty Jungkook never let any harm befall you, recent times called for him to fall effortlessly in love with you yet you still managed to make him fall deeper, he’d always liked you from the beginning even as a child, you were his number one supporter, never leaving his side amidst the risk.
“Your so stupid, Jungkook.” Came your sniffle, you’d stopped crying a moment ago but preferred to relish in the memories of Jungkook's embrace, when was the last time he held you like this? It was warm, shaded by his cold outlook Jungkook was rarely what the media depicted.
“Look at me, y/n” Jungkook coeed leaning his head back a little bit enough for his hands to cradle your chubby cheeks in his large hands, your tear glistening eyes peered up at him “You deserve the world and if you give me a chance I’ll do anything to give it to you, let me make it up to you and I promise I won’t fuck it up this time” Jungkook words had knitted your frown together, what was he asking?
“What do you mean?” you questioned warily, Jungkook used his tattooed hand as a tissue wiping your tears away with the pad of his thumb “I bought you something a while ago, I couldn’t find it in myself to ask you but now I feel like this is the only time I’ll have the courage to do it.”  He proposed nervously, reaching deep into his pocket while one of his arms still tenderly embraced your waist.
Out came an indigo box, the sudden thought brought a gasp from your lips “will you take this promise ring? My love” my love? Everything was so freshen in abundance, you nodded your head in infirmity. Claming to the thin veil of hope that this wasn’t just a dream, the man you loved since you could first remember was suddenly laying his life and career on the line to promise you something you only wished for.
But was it the right choice?
Jungkook pulled you into a passionate kiss once you screamed a strong and prominent yes, too eager you were to gain his hand in marriage. It was all unfathomable, he’d also involuntarily moved you into his priceless mansion he adjusted to weeks earlier. You were still adjusting to calling him your boyfriend too, knowing a promise ring meant nothing but what was said in the word. A promise.
He made your Mondays more enjoyable, waking up to his exquisite beauty and oftentimes incoherent snores which you came to adore. Bopping his bruised nose while caressing his cheek, treasuring the moment. He yearned for an embrace to coo in and you gave that, the warmth you offered was his to grasp.
He also stopped coming home high off his kite, the alcohol abuse subsidized and you couldn’t be more happy to have the old kook back. Attending his fights every week with a new outlook for the media, notorious for protecting Jungkook and calming him down when others looked down at his abilities and even when they would make explicit detailed things to say to you in hopes of angering their former opponent.
“Just ignore them baby” you would say, holding his hand tightly in remembrance of your existence, roping him back to reality and soothing the red he was growing to see.
“I’m yours okay baby, don’t worry about them” You muttered after the incident, your dress rising up as you straddled Jungkook to gain his attention “ forget about him.” you continued, Jungkook had a dark look in his eyes. Gawking towards your position as his hands placed themselves on your exposed thighs covered in his markings he consciously made nights before “I’ll always be here okay, look at me. I’ve been here since the beginning nothing and I mean nothing will make me ever want to leave you”
Jungkook breathed, blinking rapidly as his head bobbed down leaving you to pick his chin up to face your worried face. The driver had already left the building and you both were off to his next event, yet even with a face as bruised as his own people still recognized him “keep your head high kook, I love you and I just wish the best for you okay” you were pecking his lips in reassurance and he managed to pull the ends of his lips into a simple smile.
“I’ll listen to you” Jungkook spoke, leaning his forehead against yours as you both shared a breath. Reminiscing the days where you cradled each other in friendship “I love you baby”
Nothing was ever harder for a boxer then the constant matches, yet being with one was probably the hardest task of all.

The crisp air carried soft flakes of white across the frostbitten sky. The Cloud Recesses was coated in a blanket of thick, plush snow as far as anyone could see. The rabbits had been tucked away from their place on Back Mountain into a warmer abode. Tonight, that abode happened to be the Jingshi, where a cheeky Wei Wuxian had smuggled the bunch inside to surprise his almost always overworked lover.
These days, both he and Wangji had been teaching the juniors alongside various night hunts. Though things had been mostly peaceful in the cultivation world, and currently none of the clans were at each other's throats, spirits and other nuisances were still running around causing trouble. But of course, where there was trouble, there was the esteemed Hanguang-Jun and the ever chaotic Yiling Patriarch. The current problem of their teachings was in the execution. Where he was laid back and experience based in his lessons, Lan Zhan meticulously laid out everything, leaving no room for creative exploration, and holding many lectures Wei Ying himself was guilty of falling asleep during. Monotony was somehow effective for disciples like Sizhui, but for those whose brains hadn't become entirely indoctrinated by years of rules- well, it reminded him of the boring hours during his time as a student in Gusu. Lan Qiren's tedious way of drilling said rules of the Lan Clan didn't do much either, all things considered. Like uncle, like nephew.
Though he didn't agree with endless hours of just sitting and listening, his Lan-Er-Ge was insistent. He was also insistent in just the planning alone of those dull, dull lessons. Not to mention overseeing the individual growth of each disciple, and the several times he'd be called out during the evening to help get the group of teenagers out of trouble. Wei Ying tagged along those nights, of course, but he didn't exactly wake up at sunrise most days, nor did he hold anywhere near the same amount of responsibilities the Second Jade did. He could sleep in, and it was expected of him.
So now that he could see his beloved Lan Zhan not-so discreetly yawning after their last night hunt, Wei Ying made it his secret mission to (politely) force him to take a break tonight. What better way to do that than shielding their dear rabbits from the cold? If he was lucky, maybe he could even get Lan Zhan to cuddle with him. He could be a rabbit too!
So when the door slid open, Wei Ying was already darting forwards with two fluffy bunnies in hand. "Lan Zhaaan~!" He beamed, nearly falling face forward as he stopped abruptly. "I brought in the- Eh?"
That wasn't Lan Zhan. No, he was too short to be Lan Zhan. Short and flustered. "A-Yuan?"
Sizhui looked down, apologetically. "S-Senior Wei! Sorry for coming in unannounced!" He bowed, already getting overly worried about the littlest things when it came to courtesy. Like he wasn't allowed here whenever he pleased, he and Lan Zhan didn't mind. He'd have to break this kid from being so polite! It was poisoning him!
"Ah, A-Yuan A-Yuan! Who decided you call me Senior Wei? You used to call me Xian-gege!" Wei Ying huffed, setting the rabbits down to hop around the place once more as he leaned on the doorframe. "Or maybe you prefer to call me Baba now since I clearly raised you!"
"But Hanguang-Jun ra-"
"Hanguang Jun raised you like a bunny. I raised you to be a gentleman!" He exclaimed, proudly sporting his widened smile. "Eat carrots, sit around and be cute. That's for a rabbit. I taught you all the important things! Like how to plant a little radish! And look, you got more radish friends in the end! Isn't that great?" Hands contently sat on his hips as the once feared Yiling Patriarch bragged his true colors. The two couldn't help a light chuckle from that. "But I assume you didn't come to listen to me badger about being the better parent, right?"
Sizhui shook his head. "Actually, Hanguang-Jun asked me to keep you company while he finishes some of his work." The boy explained, gladly coming in from the cold as Wei Ying stepped aside from the doorframe. He had the expression of a giddy puppy... on second thought, A-Yuan was too well mannered and tame to be compared to any dog. "Hanguang Jun must work very hard to still be reviewing this late in the evening. It's only an hour from curfew now."
Wei Ying sighed. Of course Lan Zhan had sent Sizhui to distract him. It wasn't that he didn't appreciate the disciple's company, but he wanted his husband by his side again. Life was so boring and lonely when he didn't have his beloved to pester. That, and his husband was going to run himself into the ground if he didn't take a break soon.
One of the rabbits bounced around, before contently nibbling on Sizhui's robe as the teen set out some tea. Of course, Wei Ying wouldn't tell the kid that the tea was only for him, and that Wei Wuxian had poured a heaping's worth of Emperor's Smile into his own cup. That would be 'setting a bad example'.
"Believe it or not, Hanguang-Jun is just as stubborn as I am. Won't admit when he's struggling, and won't easily be swayed from his duties." He spoke, a bit scornfully. As the two sat down for their drinks, most of the bunnies piled around the junior disciple, one even hopping upon his lap. "Traitors! I brought you here!"
The teen gently ran his fingers across the rabbit's forehead. He was accustomed to this, Wei Wuxian was sure of it. Either that, or they were trusting of their own kind. Lan Zhan fed him and raised him to be a rabbit, maybe they knew he was secretly their kin. "Senior Wei, do you think Hanguang-Jun is struggling?" Sizhui asked, now showing worry on his face.
"He yawned today."
Well that was definitely a surprised look. "So it's true then. He never yawns." A hand was brought to his chin. "I don't think I've ever seen him tired before."
Still pouty, Wei Ying closed his eyes. "Considering he kept a straight face after being wounded by the Xuanwu, I can say for certain he's been working too hard for too long. And I'm gonna do something about it!" Downing the rest of his drink, he abruptly stood. If Lan Zhan wasn't planning on taking a break anytime soon, he would be now. "I have an idea, and I'm gonna need your help with it. You and... where's Jingyi right now? We need a messenger who knows how to keep a secret."
-
Wangji took his work in the Lan Clan very seriously. Uncle begrudgingly learned to tolerate Wei Ying's presence over time, and his brother was always supportive of his decisions- his desires more specifically, a rare thing to him to imdulge in. Therefore, his responsibilities were tied to his sense of gratitude. Lan Wangji was grateful that he and his soulmate could reside here in peace, at least for the time being. Perhaps the Cloud Recesses wouldn't be their home forever, but for now, everything- it was as it should be. So he had to work hard. He would work hard to keep things this way.
He had sent Sizhui to hopefully entertain Wei Ying. They enjoyed each other's presence and talked frequently of the past. How he silently wished to be with them, but he had to grade papers tonight. He would sit and write as long as he had to, complying with the curfew time of course. Wangji had hoped to spend some time with his lover before the late hour came, but it would have to wait for another day. As long as they were together in the night, as long as the single lotus of the Cloud Recesses was beside him when the moon was high, he could be satisfied.
What he had presumed to be a peaceful last hour of writing changed when another of the current disciples, Jingyi, had come rushing to his side. "Hanguang Jun!" He called out, in a manner that was unnerving for Wangji. Worry. Fear. A distinguishable type of fear, shared only with those who were familiar with... "It's Senior Wei! He- something's wrong!"
His brush fell from his hand, sliding across his desk to a graded paper, leaving blotches of ink scattered on it. "What happened?" He asked, coldly. Wangji knew he was idolized by the disciple, but right now, he knew the stern, serious gaze that took hold of his face would be enough to intimidate even those whom he loved the most. His brother had so politely gotten accustomed to calling it, 'The Wei Wuxian Effect,' but that was beside the point.
Jingyi, and his inability to have the specifics, was still catching his breath. "I-I only heard yelling!" The teen looked as though he was cowering. It was only then that Wangji had realized that not only was his brush dropped, but broken in half, the second part still wrapped in his hand by knuckles that were turning white. He hadn't remembered doing that. "Hanguang-Jun! Sizhui is still with him! I don't know what's happening!"
Without needing to hear the rest, he was up and moving. As fast as any rules would forbid, he was moving. Across the paths of dusty white, he was going. The Second Jade was preparing himself for anything, clutching Bichen as the brisk pace he was taking barely left any time for marks to be formed in the snow. Wangji couldn't lose him again, his husband or their son, he wouldn't let it happen. He'd be faster this time.
Possibilities flooded his mind. Across the many towns, certain people swore vengeance to the Yiling Patriarch, for one reason or another. In the same sense, many sought out the demonic cultivator in hopes of being taught the art form, and would even carry out heinous acts to do so. Wangji sincerely hoped neither was the case. Spirits were enough of an issue, but he would always silently prefer the threat of the unliving rather than the unagreeable nature of man. Whatever the threat, he would never let Wei Ying go again. Never.
'Wei Ying!'
The doors burst open with a thud, Wangji using a great deal of strength to pry them open. Wisps of smoke lingered all around the room, coming from a tapestry set ablaze; the remains just barely intact to still hang on the wall. Sizhui was frantically trying to suppress the flames with a basin of water, but to no avail. "It's no use! I got it!" Wei Ying yelled, grabbing a section of the cloth that had yet to be touched by fire, and carefully holding it away from the wall. He bent over, gathering a pile of ashes that had collected on the ground with his other hand, smudging them across his fingers. "It has the remnants of a fire talisman. It won't be put out easily-" A glance came to his direction. "Huh? Lan Zhan when did you get here?"
Before he could answer, Jingyi had caught up, looking confused. "Huh?! When did you switch the plan to fire?! What happened to the first plan?!" He exclaimed. At that, both Sizhui and Wei Ying shot him a glare. In Wangji's experience, that meant they were hiding something. Not the first time it had happened. "I mean, what plan? There was no plan!"
"Plan?" The Second Jade asked. Hesitant looks and a light laugh were exchanged between the three. No one wanted to come forward. However, silence from Hanguang-Jun rang loudly, or so he'd been told. Though he had not intended to be intimidating, it was effective.
"Hanguang-Jun," Sizhui bowed, "Senior Wei noticed you've been working hard recently, so..." His sentence trailed off. "We came up with a plan to have you take a break. Jingyi was our messenger. Apologies for the initial deception. The fire was not part of this." The junior disciple confessed. Jingyi joined the other in his apologetic stance.
Wei Ying sighed, seeming to forget what he was holding as the last of the fire grazed his hand. Yelping, he let the last of the material go, as it succumbed to ash midair. Wangji was already by his side, holding the injury to his eyes and looking over the redness that had been left on two of his fingertips. "Should be treated." He spoke, softly. Fortunately, he had both the right balm and proper dressings nearby, as Wei Ying had a bad habit of being injured, and the healers were busy enough.
"Lan Zhaaan..." He whined, already having the gauze wrapped around by the other. "Lan-Er-Ge, this stuff won't work. I need you to kiss it better for me!" A pout smuggled on his face as he threw his arms over his lover's shoulders. "It hurts! It hurts so much! This is the end, Lan Zhan! The end of the Yiling Patriarch! I'm headed back to the afterlife for sure!"
The Second Jade sighed, looking content as he planted a gentle kiss atop his husband's now treated hand. "Be more careful." Wangji breathed out, letting Wei Ying put his head on his shoulder, still quietly embracing the hug from behind. When met with eyes that held a mischievous gaze, he repeated. "Need to be more careful, Wei Ying."
The pair of junior disciples weren't sure if they should be seeing this. Red hues brought on by embarrassment heated their cheeks. Still half-nuzzled into Wangji, Wei Ying couldn't help but laugh, looking up to the ceiling. "You kids! So easily flustered, just like your Hanguang-Jun used to be! You need to get out of this stuffy old place more often! Do some real labor, talk to the townspeople! They'll teach you how to have fun! And maybe you'll get to meet a pretty-"
"Wei Ying, the fire?"
One of the many conversational cues of the Second Master Lan- this one insinuating he wished for them to speak alone. Finally. Letting go of Wangji, much to his concealed displeasure, he shuffled away, closer to the duo of teenagers. "Alright alright. We've had enough excitement for one night, haven't we? Mission... Unconventional Success? The adults need to talk now." He teased, "and I'm sure the rest of your little duckling friends want to hear all about what happened, hmm? Run along now my little henchmen~!"
Jingyi stepped forward, seemingly wanting to protest, but A-Yuan grabbed his arm. "Right." The more daring of the two mumbled.
"Have a good evening Hanguang-Jun, Senior Wei." Sizhui added. Both of the disciples turned to leave, clearly hesitant. Wei Ying couldn't blame them for wanting to stay longer, after all, he was just so cool to be around, and spontaneous fires were certainly going to be an interesting thing to deal with if this was going to be a recurring thing! But the curfew was fast approaching, and he'd dealt with the consequences of rule-breaking enough to know that it wouldn't exactly be taken lightly should they be out longer than needed. His hand cramped just thinking about it! So much writing...
When the doors were sealed shut, the solemnity of Lan Wangji wore off. Loose shoulders, small flakes in his golden-toned eyes lighting up ever so delicately, the corners of his mouth turning upwards- to anyone unenlightened, they would notice no difference. But Wei Ying was enlightened, so very enlightened; educated and experienced in the ways of the Second Jade. Every magnetic movement made was put to a makeshift memory. His Lan Zhan was just so magnificent, he could study him for hours.
"You didn't start the fire." Wangji spoke, looking to the other for confirmation. Just as Wei Ying was experienced in his lover's expressions, Wangji was equally versed. "Good."
"We had sent Jingyi out to get you when it happened." The other started, sliding his fingers along the charred outline on the wall. "No trace of how it happened; didn't even catch our attention at first. By the time I had noticed, it was halfway singed through. What I find interesting..."
Wei Ying started digging through piles of scrolls. They had many maps, but on different scales. The one he took showed all of Gusu, and only Gusu. "It burnt one item. Of all that could have been set to fire, it burnt one item, and one that was mounted far enough from the wall as to not endanger anyone with a large scale blaze." A hand was brought to his chin. "Where did that tapestry come from?"
"Yuanwei Village." The Second Jade replied.
"Yuanwei... Lan Zhan! Did you name a town after me and A-Yuan?" A smirk crept onto the Yiling Patriarch's face. A devilish one, one of skillful teasing. He didn't remember anyplace called Yuanwei. He didn't remember a lot of things though. But there was no way-
"Farmers and merchants established a community eight years ago. Became a village. Asked to be recognized and named." He stopped, only for a minute. Wei Ying loved it when their eyes met like this. "I was given the task." Wangji informed, nonchalantly. His gaze strayed back to the map as his husband slowly turned red.
Beet red. "Lan Zhan!!! You-! You can't just say these things casually!"
"Does it bother Wei Ying?"
"No! But you can't just... But I guess you already have... Aiyahhh, I guess I'll have no choice but to love you for being so extravagant." Chenqing tapped against his hip as he held his arms around Wangji's waist. It seemed almost like a one-sided hug, but a hint of intimacy shared between them. This was nice.
Still holding onto his beloved, he turned the two of them around so he could see. Wangji had to look over his shoulder to see the map, but he didn't mind. "Yuanwei. The tapestry is from Yuanwei. There was no one close enough to cast an ordinary fire talisman, and it seems like this is too calculated to have been an attempt on our lives. Good! It's such a chore when people want to kill us."
"Mn."
Wei Ying sighed, dreamily falling into Wangji's always alert arms. "So eloquent my husband is!" Just as quickly as he dove towards the floor for the Second Jade to catch him, he bounced back to his feet. "In any case! I'm sure Zewu-Jun would want to hear about this. Especially if this was a threat to the Lan clan. Shall we go visit him, Hanguang-Jun?"
Wangji lightly shook his head. "Brother is not in the Cloud Recesses tonight. Visit to Qinghe."
The former Jiang disciple snapped. "Ah! I forgot! Huisang called a conference right? Doesn't he come back tomorrow?"
"Yes."
"Great!" He tugged on Wangji's sleeve. "Then he can know tomorrow. And youuu~" Wei Ying placed a single kiss on his cheek. His voice was no louder than a whisper. "You can take a break, Lan Zhan. You've been working so hard-"
He stopped.
Why did he stop? A smile stayed on Wei Ying's face, though pained. Ah, not this again. A glint of raw emotion, a single tear rolling down from eyes just barely dusted by pink under eyes, barely noticeable. But the Second Jade did, he always would, and it was too late to turn away. Tears? Why was he crying? He hadn't been feeling sad all day. He wasn't even sad! Lan Wangji was by his side again, and they were talking. It's what he wanted. So why... "You look so tired, Lan Zhan."
He didn't want to see him like this.
"...Wei Ying?"
"Hah." He breathed out, clutching his chest. "I don't know where these tears came from... I promise you I haven't been sad this whole time. I'm not even sad now! I promise. It's just- ahh I'm sorry this keeps happening!" That much was true. Unfortunately, sometimes what he went through crept up at the most inconvenient times. Memories of the past swept in with the happenings of the present. Something his husband had assured him was fine, but he still couldn't help but feel guilty. Bandaged fingers laced between his soulmate's hand. "I just... I don't want to see you so run down, Lan Zhan. Apparently my fragile heart can't bear it." He smiled.
Wangji knelt down, kissing the top of the other's hand in desperation. "Can't bear it." He repeated. "Can't bear to make Wei Ying cry."
"I'm not crying! You didn't make me cry! See? No more tears! You didn't make me sad! I wasn't sad I promise I-" Words will do nothing. Lan Wangji never cares for words. And so, he took the other's lips himself. Passionate yet delicately making sure the Second Jade couldn't speak another word of blame towards himself. Brief, but very effective.
A finger flicked against the tip of Wangji's nose. "My Lan Zhan is so funny, thinking he could ever make me sad." A giggle escaped the Yiling Patriarch. "No, I wasn't sad. I was so happy. Happy to see you again. It feels like it's been forever to be awake beside you, but only when you don't yawn. Do you know how traumatizing that was to see? My Lan-Er-Ge yawning? Unthinkable." Wei Ying mumbled, contently sitting on the floor where his beloved still knelt. He put a head on his shoulder. "Your knees must hurt, sit properly. No need for this apology stuff. I want to lay my head in your lap-"
He rambled. Wangji liked it when he rambled. It was so vibrant, and he was so curious. Despite always being clad in black, Wei Ying was ever colorful in his soul. Wangji never cared for words unless they were his. But he could only be consoled by actions. Had he really done no wrong? Wei Ying didn't cry because of him?
"-and the ground is hogging your lap! How dare it! I should've let that tapestry burn it all! We'd build a much nicer floor in its place you know!"
Wangji let out one, singular laugh. A grin formed on his single lotus's face as he shuffled over to place his head in the now sitting comfortably Hanguang-Jun. "The floor cannot have me."
"Good. I won't let it." Wei Ying smirked throwing his hands behind his head. "Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan, you should really take that break tomorrow. We could have a relaxing day here all to ourselves. Or we could go into Caiyi Town and have some loquats- take A-Yuan and A-Yi to have dinner with us. Would you like that Lan Zhan?"
"...Would that make Wei Ying happy?" Wangji finally gave in, closing his eyes briefly in hesitant acceptance. But seeing Wei Ying light up the way he did, nodding vigorously, he would do this a thousand times over and more if he could. "I will take a break, then." He murmured, running his hand through the other's hair. Knowing they would be retiring for the night soon, he reached for a brush, undoing the tie of his husband's red ribbon. Wei Ying's hair was both silky smooth and yet small tangles always hid beneath the layers. They straightened easily with a gentle tug, never too hard.
Meanwhile his soulmate took to rambling once more. "Lan Zhan I had to go to such great lengths to bribe A-Yi to be the messenger for our plan! And I didn't even need to! One of the other disciples would've come to get you when the fire started! But now I have to get the whole lot of them sweets anyways!" He pouted, leaning his head back further to look at the other. "If I were them, I would've broken out for sweets myself! Why do they need me to do it? Kids!"
Wangji had finished brushing through the hair, letting go of it gently. "What were you planning?" He asked, both curious and a bit concerned. Nothing dangerous, and nothing that would upset him- those were out of the question. But upset uncle or the others... they were not graced with the same protections from his husband's mischief.
"Nothing special. I had brought up the rabbits earlier and was going to tell you they hopped up here all by themselves looking for you." Scooching across the floor, he picked up a basket that had been turned over on the floor. Hiding underneath, bunnies were practically stacked on top of each other. Strange, there was enough room for them all to be on the floor. "Good thing I put them in there before the fire started. Sizhui wanted to let them hop all over- but I told him you might trip over them if you were scared. That Jingyi... I told him to not scare you when I sent him!"
The rabbits hurriedly sprung over to their precious Hanguang-Jun. They had clear favoritism, even after Wei Ying had given them a talking to. Wangji let the few who were bold enough to hop onto him get settled where they liked. "A-Yi heard screaming." He started, sweetly stroking a hand on its head. "Glad he reacted."
"I guess you're right. I'd much rather you save me from a blaze than watching those juniors try and fan it."
Wangji nodded. The rabbit he'd taken to the most, the only one of dark fur they had, made its way up to his arm not long ago. It sat peacefully on his shoulder, but seemed to nuzzle into the man for more attention. Understanding the request, he lifted it up, holding it out just far enough from his body to be comfortable. "A-Ying."
Wei Ying nearly choked hearing that. His face went through thousands of shades of red, from a subtle pink to a burning strawberry, moving closer to his husband. "Eh!? First a town and now this! You never quit do you?" He asked, desperately, though sure he already knew the answer. "You never even call me A-Ying! What gives? Spoiling me and then calling the rabbit the cute name?"
He didn't need to say another word. Lan Zhan was already putting the rabbit in his lap. "A-Ying-" The Second Jade murmured, placing his head on the other's shoulder. "A-Ying is so handsome. Cute. Kind. Courageous. Strong. All the good things. Good like a bunny."
Grinning. He was grinning like a lovesick fool. Giddy, he took the brush that had been set aside, and took out ornaments in his lover's hair. Though wedded, nowadays he looked for permission before touching the sacred Lan headband Wangji wore proudly across his forehead. When he go the nod, he was quick to fumble with the tie that kept it fastened, before letting it slide gracefully into his hands.
Ha, how naive he'd been all those years ago. He'd picked a lover without even knowing it. A good choice, the best in fact, but a choice unconsciously made so young. He'd be gentle now, respectful. He owed so much debt to this elegant piece of cloth, but an eternity more to the one who wore it. Years. Life had kept on a steady pace in the blink of an eye for him, though in a new body. But... no he'd rather not pry that tonight. He was already tired, no need to bring up those memories. No more surprise crying!
Wangji's hair was damp from now melted snow. Wei Ying carefully glided a towel over it. "Lan Zhan, you shouldn't keep your hair damp. It's bad for your health."
"Mn."
When it was softened again, he ran the brush through. "We should go to bed soon. You need the extra sleep."
"Still have time. Curfew bell did not ring."
He sighed, pressing his face into the other's white robes. Sandalwood. He still had that rich, wooded trace clinging to him. "You need to sleeeeep~" Wei Ying mumbled, affectionately.
That's when the other turned around, causing him to nearly face-plant into the ground. But he was caught at the wrists. "Want to look at you." Wangji admitted, the tips of his ears tinged with a sweet pink. "Don't see you enough. Need to see you."
"You'll see me all tomorrow when Zewu-Jun comes back. You should rest now or else I'll make you take a nap then!" He teased. But of course, Wangji took it seriously, pulling away and heading for the bed. Wei Ying couldn't help but giggle as the other stared at him, waiting to be joined. "Alright alright, I'll come too. But I might be up earlier then! Maybe I'll make you breakfast!"
When they were laying beside each other, Wangji shut his eyes. "Wei Ying will sleep in."
"Is that a request or a fact?"
"Fact."
Wei Ying shuffled, propping himself halfway up with his shoulder, head sitting in his hands. "Is that so? What if you're wrong?" He poked the Second Jade's cheek. "Has Hanguang-Jun ever been wrong though? Maybe the entire cultivation world should listen to you more often. Things could be a lot more quiet."
"To us. Wei Ying is insightful." Lan Zhan added, opening his eyes once more. Turning slightly, he blew out three candles that illuminated the room. One... two... three, and the room was dark. Wangji not-so gracefully fell back onto the bed, before, turning towards the other. "Sleep." He breathed out.
"Sing to me." Wei Ying offered, only to be met with a confused, sleepy gaze. "Wangxian, sing it to me."
He tilted his head. Adorable. "Meant to be played on the guqin."
"Ahbut Lan Zhan," Wei Ying started, taking a thoughtful stance. "Your guqin is only an echo of your beautiful voice. It can't compare." An explanation that could be seen as biased, but bias was his specialty. They were married, Wei Ying could be biased compared to everyone else. He was the only one allowed to be biased when it came to Lan Wangji.
A moment of quietness passed, the only sound being the wind that whistled outside. Then, notes. Words... Words?
"You made words to this?"
"Mn."
The Yiling Patriarch brushed stray strands of velvet black out of his eyes, then Wangji's. "Lan Zhan." He coaxed. "Lan Zhan. Lan-Er-Ge. Ji-xiong. Hanguang-Jun. Lan Wangji." The names were all beautiful, each in their own way. Yet, there was one yet to be spoken. A-Ying... He liked that. Maybe his angel in white would like... Was it too bold? A-Ying was meant to be a rabbit, but he had no rabbit by the bed to blame it on. But Lan Zhan used it, so maybe- maybe he'd wanted to hear a response all these years? Only one way to tell.
"A-Zhan, it's beautiful. You're beautiful."
He smiled.

Every breath you take. - 8
The drive was quiet, if only for the lack of attention you had for your surroundings. Each curve and streetlight was ingrained in your brain, your hands following the journey to your house with ease, allowing your mind to wander to the magic, dreamy land where you could imagine being safe and sound away from those men. Free and untroubled, allowing yourself to relax to the point of destruction, welcoming the contained stress of those months.
Before you could think too much, you were right in front of your house and your car was parked in the usual spot. You were in a trance, with your overworked brain straining to stop tearing and aching for the thoughts plaguing it. You slumped against the seat and turned off the car, enjoying the complete silence that came with the engine shutting down and the emptiness of the street. When you closed your eyes to give yourself away even more, they burned with the intensity of fatigue. You even felt yourself drift to sleep, slowly, before a swift knock on the car’s window made you jump.
You threw your head to the side, your vision a bit fuzzy, and saw the figure of a man right outside your car. Panic washed over you, but when the face that was looking at you become clearer, your fear morphed into worry and regret. Your fiance, or ex-fiance. You swallowed the lump in your throat, but figured he deserved any type of clarification or closure he asked for. He even deserved to yell and get angry, tearing into you to destroy what little hope you had left and push you fully into the cold feeling of not caring what would happen to you, giving up the prospect of freedom completely. You shook your head at the notion, and climbed out of the car before you could allow yourself to drown into your anxieties more.
When you were standing up, in front of him, you forced yourself to look him in the eyes. No matter how many times your gaze slipped and lowered, you pushed yourself to raise your head and wait for him to speak; no matter what, your throat was too dry to allow you to talk first, even if it was your duty to apologize and let him go. Despite a few seconds passing from the moment you were standing in front of him to the first words coming from his mouth, you felt the weight of each single second that ticked away and dropped on your mind, making you feel even more oppressed than you needed to.
“You look tired,” his voice didn’t betray any sentiment that wasn’t worry or apprehension, and you hated yourself ten times more with each note of concern. Any good resolution to keep your gaze steady and somber collapsed along with your eyes, pointed down and burning with tears. But you had to contain yourself, in front of him, so that he could just walk away. It didn’t matter if it was with bitter feelings or resentment towards you, until it meant he was far away from harm. Yet, you could head in his tone he wasn’t inclined to go along with your plan, “You don’t have to shoulder this, I’m here for you.”
It was a blow, hard and fast, knocking you out. You didn’t know how to answer or how to convince him to leave you alone, build his life differently, most of all because your heart ached at the thought. You didn’t want him to abandon you and find someone else, create a family and a future with them, it was supposed to be you. Selfish, and egotistical, but you wanted nothing more than to turn back and prevent yourself from throwing your life to those brutes who were only tearing it to shreds. You were allowing them to do so and no matter what path you would take, someone would suffer from it – never them, it seemed.
“I’m sorry, but I can’t leave you like this.” The finality, with the sweet consideration, it choked you to the point you couldn’t keep your tears from spilling, your voice cracked before even coming out. Your mind shattered for the umpteenth time, and your fiance was there to avoid losing the shards. He approached you, held you in his arms, reassured you that he would back off if you wanted to, but his words were clear and loud in their veiled self-assurance that you didn’t desire for him to go away, not for real.
All the while, you breathed with shallow and forced mouthfuls, your throat shut tight for the anxiety, the guilt, the hatred and the shame. All your fault, it was all your fault, it didn’t matter how much your rational thoughts screamed your innocence; if only you weren’t so weak and passive, those men wouldn’t see an inviting prey to their twisted game. Your fingers wouldn’t dig into your fiance’s back in an ambiguous tug to bring him closer and push him away. You wouldn’t fear your parents seeing you from the windows of your home in a way that you wouldn’t be able to explain without the whole story. And you were too tired, exhausted, to really conjure excuses and lies, cover the truth just for the peace of your loved ones.
In the safe embrace of your beloved, you crushed. It was ugly, but it was silent, kept intimate by the lingering terror of those assassins. And it was done before you could allow yourself to really let it all out, just to explain that you needed a bit of time, just patience to recompose yourself. In time, those men would leave you alone and you could come back to him, you begged for his forgiveness and his understanding, but you pleaded for him not to wait for you. The hurt in his eyes was enough to break what remained of your heart, and the promise he made to be there for you was the final cut.
“It’s not for you. It’s for me.” He answered your last supplication for him to move on with a curt and gentle statement, and you were left with nothing to do but exhale a shaky breath. He offered the subtlest of smiles to you, leaned in to give you a soft kiss on the corner of your mouth, and walked away slowly. You kept your head low, and didn’t raise it until his steps couldn’t be heard anymore. You scanned the street and found it empty, the feeling filling you a mix of calm and regret. You turned you walk towards your house and found the entrance door open. You frowned at the carelessness of whoever left the apartment complex open to intruders, but figured one of your neighbors just left it like that for a quick errand. You stepped in the common grounds, locked the door in a way that would prevent it from closing and walked towards the first steps of the staircase, deep down the vast courtyard.
Oddly enough, the door slammed shut on the other side. You turned quickly, but saw no one there to enter. You were alone and the wind was too weak that day to be of much help with the violent bang. At first, you considered going back and opening it again, but decided against it just in case someone sneaked in and was waiting to ambush you. You bit your tongue at your paranoid thought, just another deformity brought to you by the last months, but you reassured yourself with the knowledge that it wouldn’t be too out of the ordinary, in that city.
With the assumption that you would prefer to avoid any danger, you sprinted up the stairs and threw some glances towards the front door. No one in sight, not even trying to run after you, so you relax right before the entrance could disappear before your eyes. Climbing the stairs is a dreadful affair, if only because of the sensation of being at home, inside those walls that offered security for your entire life. You could allow yourself to fall apart in that privacy, show the weariness, and strain of that burden. The soft click of the key opening the wood door felt like the alarm that warned your brain of safety. Oddly enough, your idea of safety shaped into the possibility of torturing yourself in complete freedom and privacy in a few months; the taste of that thought was bitter and sour, leaving you with a grimace.
Once inside, you debated with yourself about announcing you were home, but you were anticipated by the quick steps of your mother from the living room. You knew the rhythm of her walk, somewhere between excitement and confusion, ready to rush towards the source of news that more easily could provide her with the right information. It just happened that you were the source, that time. She surfaced in a few instants at the door separating the hallway from the living room, and her face lightened up when she was sure it was you.
She nudged you into the room, window wide open and two cups of mugs peacefully sitting on the dining table, the one she would always insist on leaving without a stain and only using during the holidays. You frowned at the odd display, but her voice came to talk about someone. Someone who was there right before you arrived, and maybe you met him on your way up. Your mother wondered if that was the reason you took so much time outside your house, as she noticed your car coming up from the window and the stranger quickly excusing himself to meet you right outside the door. She giggled as she recollected the sound of a man’s voice outside the window, in the silent street. And your frown only deepened, with the muttered question of who she was talking about.
“Your friend,” she sounded genuinely confused, her head tilted as if she didn’t hear correctly. She blinked once, looked over the open window and then down the hallway where the front door was. She turned back to you after a second, a note of thoughtfulness in her words, “Blonde, slim. He introduced himself as a friend of yours, someone you knew very intimately.”
Her gaze turned soft, with strokes of complicity painting it. She lowered her voice as if she was sharing a secret with you, “You don’t have to hide it, you know,” her tone was aggravating to your nerves, your mind already working and turning to make sense of everything presented to you. You weren’t that naïve that you didn’t understand what was happening, not with your mother description of this man who walked into your house, but deep down your irrational brain was pushing the notion away so that you didn’t have to process it to its full extent. However, you weren’t granted that luxury, not with your mother continuing to talk, “Is he the reason you were nervous lately? And you ended your relationship?”
You were incredulous. The mixture of emotions inside of you, too overwhelming to be separated and named with precision, made you dizzy and unable to react properly in the seconds right after her questions. By the way her face changed in a look of pure confusion and light worry, you could understand your own features morphed into the close approximation of your internal turmoil. In the confusion in your own head, your mind scrambled and trashed to grip anything to anchor an emotion, any among the amalgamation, and eventually settled on indignation. Cold, vicious outrage that was born from abuse you had to endure, unable to take concrete form before melting into anxiety for the entirety of your permanence in that house.
“Don’t you dare insinuate that.” Your answer was final and cutting, more frigid than anything you had ever said before, especially to your parents. Your mother’s disbelief was so genuine and sudden that she didn’t have time to berate you, grumbling about misunderstandings and moodiness while she collected the cups from the table and disappeared somewhere. You didn’t follow her with your eyes, too focused in front of you. Then you turned to the window, with the gentle breeze coming in and leading you to the edge to look down.
There, kissed by the sun, was Prosciutto. Leaning on the side of your car, close to the front door of your apartment building. He was smoking, and the cigarette was lazily hanging from his lips as his head with tip back. His unfocused gaze shifted to you when he detected motion at your house’s window, and his hand left his pocket to take the cigarette between his index and middle finger to let out a puff of smoke. Barely anything changed in his behavior, he didn’t wave, he didn’t smile, just looked at you while lounging in front of your house. In your space, where you could be safe and away from their prying hands, their creepy and frightening presence.
It was impetus, a surge of anger you bottled up for far too long, that made you move away from that window in a hurry. You barged in your own room, bringing all that negativity inside of your calm and placid sanctuary, and threw your drawer open. You didn’t ponder on it too much, grabbing whatever could be caught in your trembling hands and letting everything else fall to its destiny, on the floor, with a noise that sounded too loud in your ears. Yet, you didn’t pay any mind to the mess or the highlighted senses, storming into the living room with heavy steps, hasty and unsteady with emotion fueling them.
Your hand found the windowsill, gripping it tightly in a matter of seconds. A quick look down and you could see Prosciutto was still there, his feet now crossed and his eyes looking in front of him, his head lightly tilted in the direction of the front door. The flame inside of you flickered in a last sparkle of bravery, just what you needed to raise your hand and throw whatever was in your hand down. The pocket mirror and the jewelry hit the ground, and the noise cut the air into a loaded silence as Prosciutto’s head whipped in the direction of the ruined trinkets.
Time seemed to have stopped, if only enough to let your courage cool down, solidify into a monument for the fear building up. Prosciutto’s eyes raised, slowly, and you could imagine the narrow slits of his eyes wound your skin, bruising your resolve. Despite seeing the entire scene in front of you, the details seemed foggy and distant, helped by the distance between you and him. However, you could feel the burning glare dragging the bile in your throat up, up, until it lapped at your tongue and palate. It felt corrosive, and alien, almost too much to bear; Prosciutto’s hand raised again, and you flinched as if he was about to strike you across the face.
He pulled the cigarette out of his mouth, holding it between his thumb and index, and then he flicked it away from him and onto the street. It landed somewhere near the remains of their gifts, still lit, and when your gaze shifted towards your car, Prosciutto was already walking away in the direction that would bring him farther away from the right path for his house. You followed his silhouette as it got smaller and darker, a simple dot in the gray of the street, and then your eyes dropped to the mess you made.
Shattered, broken in small pieces, all across the narrow street. Tomorrow, you would probably find it there to greet you when you stepped outside. The cigarette continued to burn, consume itself on the concrete, falling apart with agonizing slowness. Despite being so far away and so small, you felt like you could smell it, for how much you grew to know its shape and scent. Slender and elegant, so common at his lips that you could barely imagine him without, and you wanted to puke at the familiarity of that image.
The show in display to you, of the corpse made by your own hands, was enough to make your stomach close, twist and knot in painful, disgusting ways. It had been an impulsive choice, dictated by false safety and the violation of the only fantasy you allowed yourself in your situation, a dream where you could close the door of your house and the would disappear, not cross the imaginary boundary you set to feel as if you could escape or, at least, pretend to. Even then, when you retreated in your room, you felt your throat tighten dangerously at the sight of what was left on the floor, as clues of your fleeting rage.
You bent down to pick up the hairband and twisted it between your fingers, stretching out the cheap rubber band keeping it together and functional. You were suddenly captured by an odd state, where your mind couldn’t stop thinking about what you did – no, what happened, you did nothing – and, yet, it was like your mind was completely blank. A static silence in your ears, pushing any sound outside to be ignored, while your brain run after a thought, the concept of the chaos you may have created for yourself. However, it was a confused chase in the dark as you couldn’t grasp and focus on the current situation.
What could happen, would Prosciutto really tell his teammates what you did? Or was he too proud of a man to really confide in the only people who could be called his friends or confidantes? It was unnerving how little you knew of them and, no matter how much you felt their eyes on you or how much they deluded themselves, they knew next to nothing about you. They barely seemed to know anything about other human beings, how they operate and how they would build their lives outside the line of organized crime. You swallowed the lump in your throat, suddenly coming back in room after the gloomy thought shoved you back to reality to defend yourself from other dark considerations.
You left the hairband on the desk, unsure about finally dumping it inside the trashcan you left in your room. Then, you noticed the phone you left at home all day, checking the notifications that you had. Obviously, some calls from numbers you didn’t memorize, but could identify at first glance. After getting rid of those notifications, you noticed how some of your own friends attempted to call you during the day and, in the end, a single missed call from your fiance.
Conflict started inside of you, but you forced yourself to ignore his attempt to call you. After all, you were sure he did so only to talk and before he started to wait for you outside your house. You grimaced at the thought that he could have met Prosciutto, getting out of your home just before leaving, and for a moment a cold flash of horror crossed your brain. Prosciutto did go in the same direction as your fiance. For your peace of mind, you shook your head at the notion and pushed yourself to call your friends.
All it took was a few rings, then a familiar voice greeted you with cheerful energy. You responded, but she didn’t even notice the evident drain in your tone before she went on a rant about how she met a nice man that day. There was a note in her voice, as if she was trying to communicate a complicit wink with her voice. You didn’t like it at all, making your hand clench with the implications that you didn’t want to understand. She continues, about a bony scientist with odd hair and an even weirder outfit approaching her in the streets, as if they knew each other. He said he was a friend of yours, how much you talked about her and the rest of the group, he even showed a photo of you without much on that could indicate anything but closeness with him.
Your lips felt too dry to open and speak, your eyes fixed on the wall in front of you as you slowly lowered yourself on the bed. You felt ill at the second instance of invasion of your privacy and your personal sphere; no matter how much you wanted to convince yourself that it could be pure coincidence that the description matched one of the demented men who was harassing you out of a life, you couldn’t even attempt to deflect the evidence presented to you. So you stayed silent while your friend threw you question after question about this new, mysterious suitor of yours.
“I gotta be honest,” her tone took an annoying pitch, a turn that you couldn’t foresee or forget once your brain registered it. You didn’t know what to expect by this exchange when your friend didn’t have the context of the whole situation. Not that you had any intention to let her know, if that could spare her. All the same, her words started to cut worse than knives, “He was way better than your ex. At least he seemed to have something going on for him!”
You dry heaved at the idea and at the hints, covering the motion and the noise with a sudden fit of coughs that shook your body with violence and tremors. Your muscles strained, and you heard your friend inquire about your well being, a trace of concern in her voice. You recuperated as soon as you could, but your tone was shaky when you talked, “Don’t say that, please.”
It was different from the treatment you reserved your mother earlier, now that your anger melted into meek exhaustion and inconveniencing apprehension. You couldn’t bring yourself to yell or demand, just metaphorically dragging yourself on your knees to beg them to reconsider any idea those first encounters instilled in their heads. Your friend, however, didn’t catch the nuance in your voice as you silently pleaded with her, and simply insisted that he seemed like a nice man, someone perfect for you and your future away from the fatigue of illicit work inside strangers’ houses. Those words sent shivers up and down your spine.
“He isn’t what he seems.” You couldn’t gather the strength to counter further, that statement all your mind could pierce together to argue against the good intentions of that vile person who wanted to slither inside your life. She didn’t let go though, still stubborn that he couldn’t be dangerous, or that bad if you allowed yourself to be looked at in such a plain fashion by him. You gritted your teeth at the answer, at the attitude, at the misplaced irritation and at the frustration building up as you couldn’t scream at the world what you were going through. With a rushed decision, you ended the call as she was still talking, and ignored the subsequent call as you left the phone hit the bed under you.
Your forehead found your hands, and you dragged the palms up and down your face as if to wake yourself up from a long, delirious nightmare of a life. Tomorrow, you would wake up as if it was the day before your first day on the job, and you would walk in hesitantly. You would clean and leave them lunch, but you would come back to find them relaxing in their house, not minding you at all. Ignored and neglected by those dangerous men, only some words exchanged for requests and compliments on your cooking, but nothing more than that. You felt your eyes getting misty at the wishful desire in your heart.
You bit your tongue when your phone ringed again, a quick glance over your shoulder letting you know that it was one of those men calling. You didn’t know if it was Melone, as he was the most recurring culprit of flooding your phone, or someone else, but you really didn’t want to find out. Unluckily, the flashing number on the phone’s display made you remember the horrible idea that hit you a bit earlier: how Prosciutto was, supposedly, on the possible pursuit of your darling, sweet fiance. The dreadful notion poisoned your mind, making it impossible to think of anything else as you tortured yourself with all the possibilities, all the scenarios where your beloved would be threatened, ruined, beaten or worse. All pictures of vivid realism, terrifying in their sharpness, as they drowned your mind, your eyes, your ears.
You felt like you were chocking on your anxiety, and your fingers trembled as you picked up the phone, now still and silent. You weren’t sure what to do, if calling your fiance would be any good, if you would simply hear Prosciutto’s voice greeting you with nonchalance as you heard your fiance pained wails and the crack of a whip, the click of a gun, the barking of dogs, any clue of the immense cruelty that could wreck your spirit just a bit further.
All too much, your mind floating in suspension again, but the vibrating motion of your phone anchored you to reality. Your fiance's number, flashing on the screen, making you cut your breath short. You felt lightheaded as you clicked the key and let the device near your ear, far away enough that the sound was more muffled and softer. You were ready to hear the derisive laugh of Prosciutto, taunting you about how foolish you were for thinking you could save him, but the soothing tone of your fiance reached you. You felt your muscles relax, and they trembled from the constricting tension taking hold of them.
“Thank God,” you couldn’t stop yourself from muttering those words, and your fiance suddenly stopped with what he was about to say, seemingly cautious. He asked if you were safe, if anything happened to let you sigh with relief so casually, and you shook your head before you could really think about the fact he couldn’t see you. You answered with the little voice you could still muster, but you forced yourself to speak more, to reassure him of your safety, “I just had a bad evening, that’s all. I’m happy to hear you.”
The chuckle coming from the other side of the speaker was gentle, yet coated in heavy defeat. He didn’t question anything you said, just making you notice how it was barely an hour, maybe something more, since you two saw each other outside your house. He was calling to let you know he was fine, everything was good, and your spent brain didn’t pick anything odd in his tone, no matter how you tried to activate the paranoid parts of your brain to detect anything suspicious. You were too relaxed, a pounding headache emerging from the tension snapping suddenly, and your body slumped over the pillow on your bed. An hour, he said. You must have been too focused on your misery to notice anything outside, not even your mother knocking to let you know dinner was ready or to ask if you needed the bathroom to shower.
You exchanged few words with your darling, as if nothing in your relationship changed at all, despite all the sorrow you noticed earlier in his gaze. You said your goodbyes, and then you were alone in the solitude of your room. Evening was settling, the sky was tinted in soft hues of spring and warmth, but you couldn’t find in yourself the strength to stand up to live the rest of the evening before bed time. So, you settled on sleeping earlier than usual. Your rest was hollow, as if it didn’t happen at all, and you were left confused the next morning.
Your routine was sluggish, that morning. Your mother was worried, peeking at you from the kitchen each time you attempted to stay alone in the living room or at the table, but you could understand she was concerned about your behavior from the day before. All you could offer, in the fog of your turmoil, was a polite smile directed at her. Barely a plaster over the gaping wound, but you had to think about other things, like how you could face your tormentors during your next visit at the house.
Them as your eyes drifted to the desk and to the headband resting on it, the idea that came to you during your car trip to return home flashed in your mind. Maybe your mistake could be twisted into the right light if you played your cards right, not even as dirty as they were doing. You spent the rest of the week preparing, the only moments of pause you conceded yourself were the short calls with your fiance or your friends, who insisted on complimenting you on the good scion of wealthy origins that was chanting your praises. It would be annoying if the notion of Melone talking to your group of friends didn’t keep you from approaching them anymore. But it fueled the feeling of needing to plant the seed of discord among those men who wanted to tear down your life, just to build over the ruins.
Eventually, the designed day came and you stepped outside your house for the first time in an entire week. You winced when you saw that the broken mirror and the scattered jewelry were still laying on the street, simply shoved to the side so that they wouldn’t cause any trouble to those who were passing. You closed yourself in your car and breathed deeply to regain the lost composure, calm your nerves before your exhibition.
The drive felt slower and shorter at the same time, as if the space and the time separating you from the was distorted in horrible ways, but you reached your destination. Your grip on the wheel was tight, and you were about to give up on the plan now that you could see the towering house looming over you. However, you swallowed the fear, and stepped to the door. There, you straightened yourself up, adjusted Formaggio’s shirt and Ghiaccio’s hair accessories, and then unlocked the entrance. The click of the key was loud, if only because you were hyper aware of everything around you.
Once you were inside, your eyes on the floor, you left your belongings at the usual spot. When you raised your head, Prosciutto was there, leaning on the kitchen’s door with pretend serenity. When he eyed you up and down, you gave him a civil smile that didn’t quite reach your eyes, and he narrowed his eyes at the motion. He turned around, separating from the wall, and headed up the stairs with visible disdain in his stance. You took a second to calm yourself after this first step, then walked towards the living room to check who was in there.
It seemed like only Formaggio and Illuso decided to hang out in the room, but both of them looked over when they perceived the movements at the door. Both their faces lightened up in a twisted happiness that felt like a punch in the guts, but you stomached it as well as you could. Formaggio raised his hand to wave at you, and you reciprocated the gesture, to his surprise. Then, Illuso motioned to do the same, but you turned your head before he could and went for the stairs. All you could hear behind you were the barks of laughs and the barely concealed murmuring of threats.
You exhaled shakily, and grabbed the rail so that you wouldn’t fall down as you climbed the stairs.

I’m at the end of my first-ever Omega Ruby run, and I’ve honestly had a great time getting to know Hoenn. I just have to evolve some Pokemon and catch the Regis and Deoxys before I move along (I’m waiting to trade with folks to finish the Dex properly, but I can do that at any point), but I think it’s worth doing a retrospective on the characters and Pokemon I met along the way.
As a region, Hoenn is unique in that it has a LOT of water routes. You spend a large portion of the second half of the game traveling via Surf. The Azumarill in my party, Pikablue, ended the game knowing Waterfall, Surf, and Dive (it also carries Play Rough), and it was one of the most crucial members of my party for transport purposes.
When I won the Hoenn League, the team May (named ‘Hatshepsut’ in my playthrough because we love cool historical figures in this house) had with her was her evolved starter, a Blaziken named Cluck You, along with Pikablue the Azumarill, Pangaea the Groudon, Charles II the Shiftry, Friendo the Latios, and the team anchor, Bastet the overleveled Skitty. I beat Steven because Bastet dodged a Zen Headbutt from Metagross and gave me the time I needed to revive both Blaziken and Groudon in the back, and their fire moves handled the rest. Bastet went on to become the first party member to reach level 100, way ahead of everyone else. She was absolutely incredible and I love her. Her final moveset: Heal Bell (surprisingly useful, especially in Doubles), Thunder, Ice Beam, and Play Rough. She’s a Dragon Slayer.
As soon as I got my hands on the Eon Flute I started running around to check every Mirage location that came up in the hopes that it would be a Mirage Cave. I knew that was where Tynamo was, and I needed Eelektross to complete the Submas team I was building (the other nine members are in SwSh at the moment; Eelektross will hopefully someday join them). On November 30th, my persistence paid off, and I went and caught three Tynamos so I could have the entire evolutionary line in my National Dex in Pokemon HOME. As it turns out, Eelektross still hasn’t been added to HOME because Third Rail has become a vital member of my party in postgame and I love him and he loves me. (I’m just Emmet, really.) The Eon Flute is also really nice in that using it allows you to literally fly in real time over the entire region, and I prefer doing that to using Fly because it’s just so aesthetically nice. Friendo just swoops down and picks me up, and we have a nice time exploring together. It’s especially pretty at night when everything is all lit up. It’s a lovely little feature exclusive to Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, and it’s so great.
Character-wise, Hoenn has produced some notables. Magma and Aqua are two of the most beloved villain teams in the entire franchise, and the reboots gave them so much more personality and gave the leaders and admins some excellent updated designs. (Years ago, when the remakes were first released, my dash was filled to the brim with Hardenshipping.) I had OR, so I had Magma to contend with, and one of the single most entertaining things in the entire game is Maxie’s losing animation. It’s perfect, it suits his character so well, and it’s just really funny. Also, shout-out to the Team Magma grunt that I met in the Extremely Obvious Hideout who told me how proud he was of kicking his soda habit whilst standing next to the vending machines. I love that guy. In terms of reformation, Magma and Aqua come around very easily when they realize that they’ve had a very bad idea - they ultimately were well-intentioned but made a really horrible mistake and set out to set things right (with the player’s help, of course). It ultimately makes both teams very likeable.
In terms of other characters, not every Gym Leader from Hoenn is a complete standout, but a few are very, very popular. Flannery is a perfect time capsule of 2003 fashion and I love that so much, and I don’t think I need to say much about Wallace. He’s just Wallace. He’s so freaking entertaining. Steven is also a very popular Champion, and he plays a pretty big role in the plot, so you see a lot of him throughout the game. (He and Wallace are also a very popular ship, with Originshipping - named for the Cave of Origin which Wallace has to grant you access to - actually being referenced in Pokemon Masters on, of all days, Valentine’s Day. Make of this what you will, but I’m here for it.) The Gym Leaders all received redesigns as well, with a lot of them benefiting greatly from it - I like Roxanne’s new school uniform so much better than her old one, for example, and once again, Wallace outshines everyone with an ensemble that would go wonderfully at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade. I wish we got to know the Gym Leaders a bit more as people, because they don’t get to stand out as characters as much. Galar actually did this very well by allowing us a lot of interactions with the Leaders outside the Gyms and as teammates and rivals in the Galarian Star Tournament. A big part of the reason Wallace is so popular as a Gym Leader here is that you see him outside the Gym multiple times and can even compete with him in Contests. You get to know him as a person more and not just as the eighth Gym Leader, and it makes him a much more interesting character.
In short, here’s how the League stacks up for me:
Roxanne: Benefited massively from her character redesign, which gives her a lot more personality. Would like to see her and Steven interact since they’re apparently friends, which I imagine revolves around going out and licking rocks together or whatever geologists do with their geologist friends.
Brawly: He still isn’t very distinct. He’s a surfer who trains Fighting-types, which is a bit of a subversion since you’d expect Water-types from someone like that, but nothing about him really pops for me.
Wattson: Gives off Grandpa Vibes. Wattson actually gets a lot of expository development via his work on New Mauville and Sea Mauville, where you find out he halted the projects to protect the Pokemon ecosystems in both locations. A lot of employees were angry about this and he was even investigated briefly for stopping the projects, even being called a traitor to the company (which appeared to overwork its employees and prevent them from unionizing), but it was apparently evidently clear that he did things out of environmental concerns, and the employees were able to find work on other projects elsewhere. This actually slots nicely into the themes of the game involving environmentalism and how to ensure the livelihoods of people and nature both.
Flannery: Time capsule from 2003! I was, of course, around in 2003 (I turned 14), and Flannery was at the peak of fashion back then. Flares were in, and I miss that trend so much. For that alone, she’s one of my favorite Gym Leaders in this generation, but I also appreciate that she’s shown trying to find her footing and figure out who she is instead of pretending to be someone else. There’s a certain performative aspect to being a Gym Leader, but it needs to come naturally from them and be an extension of their own personality, not be artificial. I would, however, love to know who her grandfather is. It’s still never been confirmed. (As a side note, a lot of people headcanon her to be Kabu’s niece, since he’s from Hoenn, which is cute.)
Norman: A Dad. More specifically, the player character’s dad. There’s really nothing that stands out about him except for that damn Slaking, which gives a lot of people trouble. I did, however, appreciate the conversation he had with Wally’s father as Wally and the player character departed together, because I’m actually pretty close to my own father (who I’m very similar to in many aspects). I’m 31 years old and I still get emotional every time my parents tell me they’re proud of me. Notably, Norman is the only player character father we have ever seen in Pokemon, though, which is odd.
Winona: In-game, she doesn’t feel like she has much of a personality, although she goes off on aesthetics pretty well. It just weirds me out that that’s her hair coming out from under the helmet and not wings attached to it. She could have been really cool but she gets the short end of the development stick.
Tate and Liza: The two of them intentionally playing up the ‘weird twins’ angle by completing each other’s sentences actually comes across really cutely because they’re kids. You can also run into them in the Lilycove Department Store being children and buying toys, a good reminder that they’re still very young and evidently very skilled for their ages. Battle-wise, my Azumarill knew Surf by this point so I ended things quickly because I’m into Doubles as it is and like using spread moves when I can.
Wallace: I’ve discussed him a lot above, so I don’t need to say much else, but he really is the most notable Gym Leader in the region, and not just because he’s the last one you face. He has a lot of personality and development, you meet him outside the Gym several times, his niece Lisia is also out and about in the game and the family resemblance is notable, and you find an old magazine in Sea Mauville featuring a woman on the cover who looks like Lisia - likely Wallace’s older sister, Lisia’s mother. The entire family gets more development than a lot of the other Gym Leaders in this region.
Sidney: The first member of the Elite Four you face...I’d actually like to know more about him. He seems like an interesting person, and I personally enjoy Dark-types myself so I always appreciate seeing Dark-type users not being portrayed as evil. His upbeat nature is nice, and it’s a pleasant surprise to run into him at the Battle Resort, even if he was only there to track down Steven.
Phoebe: I love how much her appearance contrasts with her Pokemon typing. She’s a Ghost-type trainer and you’d never guess that from her outfit! Her grandmother is the old woman on Mt. Pyre, which is why Phoebe has an affinity for Ghost-Types, and I’d love to see more interactions involving them together. You can run into Phoebe on Mt. Pyre after you beat the League and talk to her briefly - she was likely visiting her grandmother - but sadly she doesn’t get much development outside of that.
Glacia: An Ice-type trainer who we learn next to nothing about. Glacia is mentioned outside of the context of the Elite Four by an NPC in the Mauville Food Court who says she was slurping down ramen so intensely that she broke a sweat, but that’s all we know about her aside from that she’s originally from a different region, and she tells us that herself. Not very memorable.
Drake: Yet another Dragon trainer late in the game, and not one of the more notable ones. Lance and Clair are remembered for being cousins and for being the first Dragon trainers you really come across in the series, and later Dragon-type trainers like Iris (who becomes Champion of Unova in B2W2) and Raihan are carried by their personalities and distinct looks. Drake is just an old sea captain with Dragon-types, and he doesn’t really jump out at me much either.
Steven: A major player in the plot - one of the most active Champions we’ve had in the franchise - and a perpetually popular character. I never minded running into Steven out and about in Hoenn, even if it meant I’d have to listen to an infodump about rocks, and his Champion battle was actually fairly difficult for the team I brought in despite having two team members with Fire-type attacks to handle the Steel. As I mentioned above, it was my Skitty that made the decisive dodge to allow me to bring in the team member I needed to deliver the final blow, meaning this is now the second time in my life I’ve beaten the Champion with an unevolved house cat. (Rick Pratt the Purrloin is a vital member of my beloved Young Ones Galar Championship Team.) Overall, Steven’s a very likeable Champion, and I did enjoy the little detail of the rocks on display in his home - he has them labeled so you can see where he found them, and they’re from every region featured in the games up to that point.
Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire also have the Delta Episode, which features Rayquaza (which you’re forced to catch) and a character named Zinnia, who isn’t in RSE at all and is new to ORAS. Besides being named after my favorite flower, Zinnia’s personality is actually very interesting because although she comes across as cheery it’s clear she feels the weight of a massive responsibility and that the cheeriness is covering a lot of pain. Her Whismur named Aster is evidently named after someone important to her who is no longer around, and it’s never revealed in-game who the original Aster was. Whoever Aster was, though, Zinnia misses her deeply. In a 2015 interview, Ohmori Shigeru stated that the original Aster was the person who held the position of Lorekeeper before Zinnia, but we don’t know anything more than that - a shame, really, because that makes for some interesting backstory.
Overall, I had a lovely time in Hoenn, and I’ll be moving on to Kalos in the next few weeks once I finish up this Dex business first. I just wish I got to get to know so many of the characters I’ve met a little better, but I adore the team I put together and I’m super proud of them and all they’ve accomplished.

Looking Forward to the Future
Thank you so much for the support, anon! I’m,,, SOFT FOR DIMILETH...
Summary: Neither Dimitri nor Byleth had good thoughts regarding childbirth -- their mothers had died giving birth to them, after all. And yet... they couldn’t help but feel the bubbling happiness of finding out they would be parents themselves.
Commission info HERE and HERE!
_______________________________
Byleth couldn't say that she led the healthiest life around -- she preached on how to take good care of oneself and how to take proper breaks... But she hardly ever did it for herself.
It was no wonder that she had been feeling sick for quite a while now, but being so lightheaded she almost fainted? That had been a first. Now that she amassed the positions of both Queen of the Unified Kingdom of Faerghus and Archbishop of the new Church of Seiros, Byleth had her work cleanly cut out for her. A lot of it.
Regardless, startled by her blink of consciousness, a soldier brought her to the infirmary whence the former professor Manuela held the highest position of Chief Physician inside the castle.
"Oh my, that's an interesting color you have on your face, Your Majesty! Do sit down before you throw it up all over the place, please." Was how Manuela welcomed her former colleague and now Queen, smiling while she looked for the proper tools to start the examination. "Now, tell me how you're feeling. And don't hide a single detail, hm?"
Byleth slowly curled up into a ball of misery over one of the beds, her breath shallow. "I feel so sick I could- ughh..."
Manuela gasped, quickly flinging a washbasin to the floor right beside Byleth's bed. "Try not to make a mess, please! Take your time in explaining, dear, and don't force yourself. I'll be here patting your back very, very lovingly until you feel better."
"Ugh, I feel even sicker now." Byleth gurgled a laugh under her sickness, holding the basin as though it were her own child, ready to vomit inside of it at any moment. Manuela threw her head back in laughter.
"The nerve!"
After the good half of an hour passed, Byleth started to feel better. She managed to sit up on the bed, the color of her skin still a bit off, but much better than before. Wasting no time, the Queen started explaining her symptoms, fully aware that they were due to stress and exhaustion, but nevertheless wanting the opinion of a professional on the field.
The more she explained, the brighter Manuela's eyes shone, her smile turning into a huge, unsettling grin.
"And you have a history of missing periods for this long?" She asked here and there as the twirled her long smoking pipe with one hand, fiercely taking notes with the other. "My, I'm afraid I have quite the news for you, dear..."
Frowning, Byleth opened her mouth to protest, but was interrupted by a loud bang, followed by a thunderous cracking sound. Startled, both women turned to the door only to find it hanging by only two hinges, its handle nowhere to be seen.
Ah, no, wait. The handle was still in Dimitri's hand, who had rushed to the infirmary once he had heard his wife had collapsed, not paying attention to keep his strength in check. Huffing and disheveled, the King looked from the physician to his wife.
"Are- I heard that you collapsed-" he panted, meaning to walk towards her, but Manuela's laughter made him flinch out of his skin.
"What an entrance, Your Majesty! Was breaking the door to my infirmary not worth of an apology?"
Blinking, Dimitri looked from the door to where he stood, then to how he still firmly gripped the broken handle within his fingers. "I, uh-" realization started to sink in, making him blush, "forgive me for my manners, I shall have it, well, replaced within the week." He cleared his throat, walking towards the bed Byleth sat on, meaning to sit right beside her. "More importantly, what has happened?"
Watching Dimitri change his behavior entirely was always so amusing to Manuela: first, he was so flustered and worried he quite literally ran through the door, then turned to red with embarrassment Manuela had to blink and then wore a worried and fulfilling smile as he sat beside his wife, his eyes deep with worry.
"Well, now that you're here, it's gonna be much easier to give my diagnosis!" She winked to the couple, who turned their attention to her.
"Diag-" Dimitri started, but Manuela's pointing her long smoking pipe right into his face made him stop himself.
"Congratulations, Your Majesties!" She pointed it to Byleth, "you're pregnant!"
"Pre-" both Dimitri and Byleth choked on the word, yet another loud cracking sound breaking the silence like a thunder.
Widening her eyes, Manuela once again looked at the King's hand only to find that the remains of the handle he somehow still held turned to dust into his surprised grip.
"Pregnant- Byle- I-" Dimitri blabbered, his eye unfocused as his hand shook as it tried to control its strength.
Byleth silently brought one hand over her stomach, resting another one by Dimitri's right hand. She looked down as her heart thumped and her mouth ran dry.
Pregnancy.
A child.
Hers and Dimitri's.
Blinking, Byleth couldn't understand how she received such blessed and wonderful news with dread inside her chest. What was it?
"Is that a... sentence?" Dimitri blurted out under his breath, his grim thoughts taking over the happiness he was supposed to feel. Would he have to lose yet another precious person of his? There was no way he could simply be happy to have a family of his own -- undeserving as he was, there had to have some kind of exchange for such joy.
Byleth breathed in slowly, closing her eyes. So that was it... so that was how she felt.
"What?" Her brow furrowed, Manuela leaned over to listen more closely. "A sentence, Your Majesty?"
Snapping out of it, Dimitri quickly raised his chin, "I! No- of course not! This is a happy moment, yes? I should not be thinking such terrible thoughts- Everything will be fine, will it not? Indeed!"
"It's... fine, Dimitri." Byleth squeezed his hand in hers, needing its warmth. "I can't say I haven't had the exact same thought as you just did."
Manuela crossed her arms and legs in annoyance. "Will you two lovebirds stop with the telepathy and tell me what's going on?"
"Hah," Byleth chuckled before lifting her gaze to her former colleague. "I suppose it can be silly to someone with a... lot of life experience," she started.
"Well, that's a nice way to insult someone, but go on." The physician rolled her eyes.
Clearing her throat, Byleth felt the minimal squeeze Dimitri gave on her hand as support, leaning on his shoulder to feel it even more deeply. "The both of us, well, we don't have many examples of what to look forward to during childbirth -- in fact, we only have one. Our mothers died giving birth to us."
"Ahh, I see it now. No need to go on, darling. I've got the picture." Manuela took a long whiff of her smoking pipe. "So now you're holding yourself back from feeling happy about your own child because you think you'll die when it's time to deliver?"
Both King and Queen lowered their gazes to their shared handhold.
"Humph, you insult me!" Manuela bonked the both of them with the round end of her smoking pipe, making them snap their heads up to look at her. "I never once lost a mother during the delivery, and I am no stranger to such things, I'll have you know! No one will die on my watch, darling, so don't go on worrying your little heads about it, okay? Besides, you are not your mother, dear Byleth. You're so much stronger than that, it'll take much more than a single childbirth to bring you down!"
Byleth opened her mouth to retort, but the icy grip of dread started to melt inside her heart, making her unable to speak. She lowered her head once again, digging her face into Dimitri's mantle. "Can I... truly be happy about this?"
Dimitri felt a lump grow in his throat, his breathing shallow. Manuela winked.
"Of course, dear. Both of you can. It's a wonderful time for a parent to prepare for their little bundle of joy to come to the world, so enjoy it to your heart's content. Now, where's that smile we all love?"
Byleth pressed her lips into a thin line, trying not to grin like a fool. She dug her face even deeper into Dimitri's cloak, sneaking her hand through his waist to start a hug. Trembling, the King reciprocated the gesture, his eye burning with emotion. Was it alright for him to hope? To look forward to a future whence he had both Byleth and his child?
To anticipate being with his beloved through and after her term; to carry their crying child and soothe them to sleep; to watch over their growth alongside Byleth and see them grow up in a land free of war and oppression...
Was he really that fortunate? Could he- could he simply... enjoy the moment?
"Don't cry, Dimitri..." Byleth whispered by his neck, his silent, choking sobs setting her off as well. He held her ever so tenderly, nudging her neck with his nose, his drenched face matching her own.
"Th-there are happy tears, my love. Happy, wonderful tears..." He sniffled, taking her warmth into his, uncaring -- or rather, forgetting -- about watching eyes.
"You two keep on playing nice," Manuela whispered under her breath before getting up to give them some space. She would lecture them about their usual overworking behavior and what to expect during Byleth's term, but that could wait until they had digested the news.
As per Manuela's instructions, Byleth and Dimitri both were forbidden of working past usual work hours -- after all, if one was seeing working, the other would follow suit. So, no overworking for either of them.
Also, Byleth needed to have a complete nutritional makeover, so the physician had to be kept in constant contact with the royal cook and with the handmaids. Constant walks were recommended, but no more weapon or body training! Riding was also banned, though a slow, short ride could be done only if they were together.
"Professor Manuela being so strict is a sight to behold," Dimitri commented one evening after they had been scolded about being up late. Byleth giggled, squeezing her hand on his.
"She's not 'professor' anymore, though."
"Oh," the King took his free hand to his lips. "You are right as always, my love. Although I wager Manuela would relish on being called 'Professor' again."
"Because of her age? My, Dimitri, I never thought you were such a shrewd man..." Byleth teased, enjoying how a shade of red covered her husband's entire face.
"Now you are simply making fun of me! That will not do." He cleared his throat, picking his wife up in his arms. Under an 'eek', Byleth held onto Dimitri's mantle to her dear life.
"Dimitri! What's this about-"
"No more walking for you today -- time to rest, my adored Queen and mother of my child." He tried to smirk, but the bubbly happiness in his chest from simply calling Byleth 'mother of his child' made it look like a foolish grin.
Snorting, the Queen wrapped both arms around her King's neck, nudging her face on his. "Is that a royal decree, Your Majesty?"
Dimitri adjusted her on his arms, his heart quite literally on fire due to his wife's teasings. "Why, it very much is." He chuckled, turning his head ever so slightly to touch her lips with his. "I will be your support through all of this, my love," he whispered as their lips still touched, his eye comfortably closed. "Through your term; everything. For all eternity."
Byleth bit his lower lip, their breaths as one. "Then, will you heed a request of mine, O eternal protector?" She whispered solemnly in between kisses, trailing them from his mouth to his cheek and ear, making him shiver where he stood.
"Anything, my Queen." He huffed, not realizing he had stopped walking since a while ago, distracted by his wife's adorableness.
Byleth pressed her forehead on his. "Please, I beg you... take me to the kitchen. I'm craving a very specific kind of fish and I think I'll die if I don't eat it right this instant."
"Pfft-bwaha!" Dimitri snorted, then full blown laughed. "Your wish is my command, dear wife!"
Giggling, Byleth strengthened her grip on him as he started running through the halls towards the kitchen. "My hero!"
The sound of their dissolving laughter could be heard through the echoes from the large palace, bringing a smile to its residents' faces.
