Wanted to find out what Tumblr thinks are the most important ingredients for a satisfying fictional relationship. Think about your favourite ship, your own OCs, books or movies you've experienced lately. What drives you crazy about them?

P.s. I'm well aware that most fictional relationships have multiple or all of these, but you have to pick the most important one mwahahahah

If you think I've missed something put it in the tags, but first check what I mean by each of the terms below.

Definitions/interpretations below cut:

Chemistry: These people get on so well it'd be a crime if they didn't hook up. They are basically already fucking with their words. Think Mulder/Scully

Attraction: these characters are unreasonably hot for each other, to the point where they ignore all sense

Narrative symmetry: covers everything from being narrative foils, contrasting archetypes (e.g. grumpy/sunshine) - think Ineffable Husbands (deep down spark of goodness/"just enough of a bastard to be worth liking") (ps yes this one is Mulder/Scully too)

Jaden Yuki/Yuki Judai

How I feel about this character: My monstrous little card game fella who I love SO much. Came into my house and kicked me in the ribs by being the actual textbook example of the "Aw! What a silly little guy!" to "He's a little bit fucked up actually" pipeline. I love how absolutely insane and messy he's allowed to be for a main character, not only did most of his arcs hit FAR too close to home, but it's just such a good example of how to take the archetypal plucky protag and deconstruct it a bit to add layers to the character. My second favorite yugioh character of all time, if I'm being subjective, my #1 fave if I'm being objective. Levels of queer neurodivergent swag I aspire to match.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: I just can't deny Jaden his funky southern rock boyf. I read him as somewhere on the ace spectrum, in a QPR with Jesse/Johan that all their friends assume is a traditional romantic relationship. Also, Yusei Fudo, because I am a sucker for narrative parallels, celestial imagery, stupid aces with the social skills of a tennis shoe.

My non-romantic otp for this character: I think he and Chazz have this relationship where Chazz gets up in the night, goes down to his kitchen, flips on the lights, and Jaden is just there eating his cereal. They are BEST FRIENDS and Chazz will not admit this even if you put a gun to his head.

My unpopular opinion about this character: Man, I wish we'd gotten more time with Yubel, but I never really got the feeling that Jaden felt any strong romantic/partner emotions towards them. Him choosing to fuse with Yubel is less a "And I will now give up everything for you, my One True Soulmate", and more just a simple acknowledgement of "You've been hurt really horribly because of me, so I'm offering you kindness and accepting responsibility for our relationship, because you don't deserve to be in pain" Which, personally, I think is a lot more impactful and fulfilling of his personal arc.

One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon: I kinda wish he hadn't actually graduated high school? I mean, obviously they would never do that, but I remember watching the final season and thinking "Yeah, there's no way he's going to graduate." Idk, he's just got Highschool Dropout energy to me and I almost wanted to see that. Let him fail out of school because he was too busy sorting out his mental health! That's very valid of him!

Crow Hogan

How I feel about this character: Trans king! I look at one picture of Crow and my brain just maxes out "Trans! Bird! Guy!" He commits crime. He has five kids. He literally named himself after a yugioh card. There's just so much good big bro energy in this funky dude. I would trust him with my life.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Uh, probably no one? There's not really any named character in the series I feel he had romantic chemistry with. He and Broder probably dated for a bit then broke up and remained friends.

My non-romantic otp for this character: The first ep. he was introduced and we actually see Yusei smile for almost the first time all series and duel and have fun with it, the big hug and the way each others face lights up when they see each other for the first time in years. Your honor, they are very important.

My unpopular opinion about this character: He's older than Yusei. Yeah I don't care what canon says, Yusei is the family Babey and Crow is a full six months older than him.

One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon: Some more exploration on what Crow gaining his signer mark actually meant to him. Did he feel like a replacement? What exactly did it mean to him that the tail mark jumped to him just so the head could move to Yusei? He's kind of the only one who doesn't get a whole plotline on how they feel about being a signer, so I always feel like there's some untapped potential for an arc there.

Bloom:

I've begun my "I don't care for Bloom/Sky" era except I love Sky unlike most people who believe this. He's literally a wet cat of a man. Bloom's and Sky's relationship is based on Bloom wanting the prince charming of her dreams, and Sky wanting to be normal by being with someone nomral. Both of these things are very much not true and are pretty unrealistic of them.

Bloom/Brandon

Brandon is the only one of the guys that would be able to roll with the insane shit that Bloom is ALWAYS caught up in without missing a beat. That's it, that's the only reason. No hesitation, no surprise, simple acceptance.

Stella:

I cannot believe you're making me break up Brella I will NEVER forgive you for this /joke

Stella/Helia

Why? Helia is the only person Brandon has ever considered a threat to his relationship, and I think that's funny as hell. Helia's commitment to the bit and acting utterly insane (see: holding off a monster only for Flora and letting the other Winx die ig, throwing someone through a table) would match Stella's ultra dramatic energy perfectly. Stella starts a bit and Helia acts like it's her last dying will and testament. Also, Helia seems to not trust himself as a part of a team (esp in the comics) and Stella's Stella ness would drag him out to hang out with everyone more often in s2 helping with that. On the other side Helia would barely care about Stella's looks, like they'd probably dating after Stella drops her "cute blonde ditz" mask, so he'd inform her of how much he likes her real personality so often

Stella/Timmy

I think it would be cute. Stella keeps him in her purse and she thinks he's so adorable. Timmy is being lavished with attention and he will try his best to let Stella know she's the best person he's ever met

Flora:

I genuinely forget that in canon Flora and Helia are supposed to be together. Mirta my beloved disaster lesbian

Flora/Riven

I have too many shippers of these two following me to not see the appeal. I have read the essays and I am convinced they could be EXTREMELY cute. Riven helps Flora be more assertive and not exclusively do things for others, and Flora helps Riven connect with his emotions and other people. Adorable

Tecna:

I don't ship Tecna's aroace ass with Timmy in the first place, or anyone for that matter so this is gonna be difficult

Tecna/Nabu

She'd eat everyone alive. He's the only non Timmy person who'd survive

Musa:

Despite Rivusa being my otp, breaking it up is a lesser crime than breaking up Brella who are soulmates. You still will not be forgiven for your transgressions /joke

First headcanon that pops into my head: Light and Johan teaming up to defeat everyone who opposes Kira and succeeding but when Kira's empire is in its best moment, Johan decides to destroy Kira's new world because he saw no point keeping it and he was bored. :) Not exactly a Light headcanon but it's the first thing that came to my mind 🤷‍♀️

One way in which I relate to this character: Nothing, I don't care what the quizzes say, I don't kin him. I think the only thing I could relate is his sense of justice but then again who wouldn't want justice?

Thing that gives me second hand embarrassment about this character: His god complex is so cringy, it's good he got owned eventually and faced the reality that he was just a human all along.

Cinnamon roll or problematic fave? There's only one correct answer here and it's of course cinnamon roll, Light is the purest character ever created, he wanted a world full of light and virtue, even his name says it, so you can't fight against that logic, right? riiiight? Nope. OKAY, SARCASM ASIDE, his dark ass heart deserves the title of biggest problematic fave, I'm serious now 🤷‍♀️ I know I bully him (or like I call it, tough love) but he's still my favourite character in DN, he's very well-written, complex and layered, I have no choice but to like him as a character 🤷‍♀️

Kay then! Underfell Papyrus, at least the way I write him, comes with this list:

• I love how good of a leader he is. It’s not just that he’s commanding and powerful, it’s more that he knows how to do it well. I’ve worked with awful leaders before, and they are easy to spot; good leaders are not.

They know what needs to be done on a large scale and are willing to let others handle the tasks they give them without being overbearing , but also can see when and where those people need help. They use their knowledge of people’s strengths and weaknesses to get them in the right place to do the best work they can. They take care of the people they work with, too, whether that’s by getting them tools, help, or even turning off a specific light fixture. Finally, they don’t put themselves above others unless they have to.

• My least favorite thing about him is his self-image. In my writing, Edge tends to vascilate between a state in which he needs to reaffirm how excellent, terrible, wonderful, etc. he is and a state where he hates himself for that very thing, his looks, his past decisions, etc. It's a really hard thing to write because I can never tell which way he'd act, and I know that being around that kind of person is hard and can be very annoying.

• "Watching Dust and Red speak with the doctor was quite honestly hilarious. They were being earnest and attentive- at least Red was. Dust was panicking, which, given the fuzzy explanation Red had given Edge about the medical torture his own father had put him through, Dust was allowed to be. They were both taking notes (Dust’s hand was shaking). They were clearly trying to pay attention and learn. The effort was awe-inspiring. • For Edge, honestly, I have 2 different BrOTPs (although they can easily be a BrOT3). I really like his relationship with Felldyne, and I also really want to write and/or play with him and Tale Undyne. There's just something about that siblings-in-arms thing, combined with a ridiculousness factor. Also, in his relationship with Tale Undyne I really want to explore how she'd feel, seeing this alternative of her bestie who did join the guard and excelled, but, at the same time, seeing the cost that position made him pay. I think there would absolutely be a fight between the two Undynes over that. Edge would not be a fan of that. Tale Papyrus would probably cheer them on.

• Picking an OTP for Edge is hard for me (I got "infected" with multishipping early and have been loving it ever since). If I had to narrow it down, though, I think I'd go with Fellcest. No matter what flavor it is (soulmates, partners in crime, stress-relief, abusive, what have you), I think they're very much a great dynamic. Both of them have a high snark factor that can add up to more than either one alone. Both have LV and will fight if they have to. Both have a responsibility that's outside their relationship that conflicts with it (to a certain degree, at least). But, at the same time, they've got very different motivations and interests. I just like to see them together? I guess?

• It's weird, but I think the closest thing I have to a nOTP with Edge is US Papyrus. There's definitely dynamics where it would work, or situations, but it's just... not for me. IDK, I'm just a little uncomfortable with it. I think it's the way they treat their brothers, honestly. Even if we aren't talking about my Stretch (that bastard is just... self-explanatory), US Papyrus is usually kind of lazy and tries to avoid responsibility, but, at the same time, is both overprotective of his brother and takes advantage of him (to various degrees). I don't think it would be a good thing for Edge to be with that, and Edge is a strong enough character that he wouldn't put up with it or stay. My Edge, at least, really isn't a fan of manipulative people or people who treat others as less than they are.

• Random Headcannon, huh? Okay. I don't think Edge would be a fan of most sports. He'd definitely not like watching them, and if he had to he'd be ranting the whole time about how wasteful it is to hone your skills to one purpose so much that it ends up destroying your own mind and body.

• My unpopular opinion (other than the whole thing about spicyhoney) is that Edge does not like spice. He just hates it, it makes him nauseous just thinking about it. It hurts his mouth and ruins the subtle flavors of most cooking. This may or may not have been the unintended side effect of one of Red's pranks. In retrospect, dumping the whole jar of cayenne pepper into the sauce for those wings was a really mean thing to do.

• This isn't something I normally do with characters, actually. I have songs for different moods of theirs, different scenes in different stories, even different outfits, but not for the character themself. I had to go through my playlists a bit, but I think I'd go with World Gone Mad by Bastille (which I didn't learn the origin of until just now. I was just listening to songs by that band when I first discovered it. This is how I find music.). You can look it up if you want, I am not going to link to anything because reasons.

• I've just tried to find the source of this one, since I've had it saved for a very long time, but I can't find it; I have a feeling it may be from someone or somewhere that was lost in the Tumblr Purge. If anyone can find who made it, please let me know so I can credit them!

ok this one is (I think) for the other character meme, and I'm gonna go with xue yang rather than jiang cheng:

a song that reminds me of them: I don't have any xy-exclusive songs, but I do always envision "sharks" by imagine dragons as being an observation from xy to jgy during their shared villainous friends era in jinlintai, with the majority of the lyrics being from xy's POV except for the bridge, which is all jgy.

what they smell like: uhhh. 😬 have you ever been to an abattoir

an otp/a notp: I enjoy xuexiao as the toxic and fucked up hot mess that it is, but I would not go so far as to call it an OTP, esp since xxc and sl exude such intense soulmate energy. I also enjoy, theoretically, the idea of xy having an utterly unrequited crush on jgy which he demonstrates through bullying him with tongue tea. and also cutting out the tongues of people who call jgy the son of a prostitute. you know, grade school hijinks.

favourite platonic/familial relationship: I know this is an ongoing pattern but since I mostly enjoy xy as a very naughty boy doing naughty demonic cultivation crimes while a 'guest disciple' of the lanling jin, I vibe most with his platonic relationship with jgy. I think my favourite moment between them happens in one of nmj's empathy flashbacks where nmj sees jgy and xy standing side by side chatting and seeming to enjoy each other's company, and then that 'code switch' moment that happens when jgy goes from interacting with xy to nmj. imo it's a neat way of acknowledging in the text that xy and jgy's shared experience of poverty in childhood, while obviously not identical, gives them a way of relating to each other that no one else in the text can. idk I just think they're neat.

a headcanon that is popular in the fandom that I disagree with: I'm not sure if this is a popular headcanon or not, exactly, or just an interpretation of the text that I disagree with, but I personally don't think jgy intended to have xy killed when he had him beaten badly and then abandoned on the side of the road 🤷‍♀️ I find jgy's propensity towards inconvenient sentimentality (e.g. sisi) an extremely interesting aspect of his character, and so I do think that he viewed the beating + turning xy loose on the side of the road as an acceptable compromise (internally, that is) to either letting him escape without issue, and executing him. and I think xy probably recognized the gesture for what it was.

the position they sleep in: sprawl, with bones and sharp pointies

a crossover AU I'd love to see them in: I would love to see him as one of xie'er's ne'er-do-well tag-alongs in the word of honour live action drama, that would be absolutely terrifying. and hilarious.

my favourite outfit they've ever worn: I mean he's basically just got the one look in the drama, but I love the idea of him slummin' it around lanling city in his lanling jin sect robes looking like a naughty catholic school teen smoking a cigarette behind the gymnasium.

Enja Soulmate AU prompts

So getting an idea for a Soulmate AU where Ja’far is in denial that Kouen is his soulmate for a long time (ie years) I was looking up Soulmate ideas for subtle ways to indicate soulmate that Ja’far could rationalize away.

I found an extensive list here (Thank you @r-evolve-art )

Here are a few AUs that I found could be intriguing for Enja that I won’t be using, but would love to if I had endless writing time XD

LIST (w/ hcs)

*Names on both wrist, one soulmate other enemy, can’t tell which one is which

Imagine Ja’far’s wrist has Sinbad and Kouen written on them

Meets Sinbad as an assassin and thinks “Enemy! Easy!” tries to kill him, but we know how Valefor dungeon ends up. “Oh, I guess Sinbad is my soulmate. This Kouen character is my enemy!”

Masked smile when meets at summit

After final arc, sees how Sinbad did him and the whole world wrong. That he failed his mission that was clearly written on his wrist. Esp after seeing Kouen is no longer his enemy.

Who would be on Sinbad’s other wrist??? Who on Kouen’s?

*You can cast one portal anywhere and so does your soulmate. Your portal leads to your soulmate's portal and vice versa.

Imagine creating a portal, and checking when the other is set up. Popping out when finally created and they meet for the first time?

(Kouen cast his early cuz family estate. Ja’far does when sindria founded and feel permanent home, when he does, out peeks Kouen–the secret romantic)

*Get the same injuries as your soulmate does

Imagine Kouen’s reaction when stabbed in the heart at 14ish when Ja’far in Zepar

Prob excited his soulmate is so warlike with all the cuts

*Soulmates share the same fingerprints

Imagine getting arrested for a crime your soulmate committed (Kouen arrested for Ja’far’s assassination murder--modern AU)

*Whenever you lose an item (like a sock), it ends up in your soulmates’ possession somehow

Now that is just all around amusing…Ja’far grumpy about all this foreign stuff that keeps showing up in his Spartanly furnished room. Maybe tries to lose it on purpose to send it back?

At one point, Kouen loses something on purpose, knowing wherever his soulmate is, it will be hidden from the enemy there. Imagine his surprise when he visits Sindria and sees all his stuff in Ja’far’s room.

*Taste the things your soulmate is eating/drinking.

Kouen always tasting coffee…but as coffee has not been yet introduced to the east, has no clue what it is.

Ja’far’s taste buds are shot from all the spicy tastes (maybe drinks coffee to wash the spice out) but his taste buds are ded from the spice

*Once you hit a certain age, or once a year, you swap bodies with your soulmate.

*Same as above, except with your soulmate’s closest friend/enemy.

*Soulmates can swap bodies with each other any time.

They see how much damage they can cause on that one day

Kouen in Sinbad’s body. Ja’far in Koumei’s?

Buwahahahaha…wait…would they even?

*You’re forced to sing whatever song your soulmate is singing, or get into a perfect duet.

Karaoke nightmare! They take so long to find each other bc everyone around them hates their singing

*Meet soulmate in dreams every night (with the ability to interact)

Comforting character as kids through their shared traumas

*You’re stuck in a room filled with clones (with maybe slight differences) of your soulmate. You need to kill all except your soulmate or else you won’t get out/be together.

Perfect for assassin training...

*Each year at a certain age, soulmates are paired together into some sort of battle royal thing, best OTP wins

Rip my enja, Ja’far is torn from you by Sin

*You will keep looping your life until you meet your soulmate.

Buwahaha...Enja will finally prevail!!!

*At the age of sixteen, everyone goes into another world for two years, hanging out with their soulmate. Time is warped to make sure the two of you are sixteen in this world. When the two years are up, you’re sent back into the real world, with fractured memories of what happened. These foggy memories make it hard to find them again. (Numbers can be changed.)

So they meet as each are 16, but that’s two years later for Kouen before Ja’far experiences that

Maybe present at Parthevia when Barby wins the election. Kouen 16 and had seen Ja’far. Turned 16 recently, so fresh on mind, but Ja’far is 14 and hasn’t met him yet. So has to hold self back.

*Once you meet your soulmate you're literally stuck to each other for the rest of the day.

Hahaha, their annoyance would be amusing

Imagine them stuck together at the summit

*Temperature gets hotter the nearer they are, colder when they are further away

This goes right in line with the Kouen/fire theme

*Instead of removing flower petals for “loves me, loves me not” the flower petals dictate whether you’ll meet in this lifetime (“meet me, meet me not”) and it's forever accurate.

Great for reincarnation AUs they meet in Magi, Orient, Demon Slayer, Bungo Stray Dogs, Jujutsu Kaisen (obv sometimes as enemies) but not others like ones that have charas with Ja’far-vibes or Kouen-vibes, but not the other.

*Everyone has memories of their soulmate in their past life.

Funny...just started an orient fic similar to this... (although the Ja’far reincarnate has not the memories yet)

*You can sense when your soulmate is in distress

Kouen when Sindria fell

Ja’far when the Hakus died

Others:

*See color for the first time when you meet, fades away when they die

This one is so poetic~

*Everyone has heterochromia, one eye is your natural colour the other is your soulmate’s natural colour. Once you meet all eyes return to natural colour.

*Once you meet your soulmate, you grow wings like an angel. You gain one new feather each time something special happens between you two. When your soulmate dies, you lose all your feathers and can no longer fly.

*If you don’t find your soulmate by your #th birthday, you die

*Everyone wears a mask. You get to finally take it off when you meet the one with your identical mask, your soulmate.

*If anyone except for your soulmate says your name, you die

*Opposite of the above, if your soulmate says your name you die

*Bubbles gives you a blurry glimpse into your soulmate’s world (visions of possessions, friends, family, laughter, crying, etc)

That could be fun

*One soulmate owns a lock and the other owns the key to that lock.
