I just read @ettawritesnstudies 's delightful short story "First Flight of Spring" and I couldn't NOT make something I hope captures just a bit of the blended sci-fi/fantasy energy of it! If you’re looking for a unique take on bonded dragon/rider pairs, or the idea of space dragon couriers with their own symbiotic ecosystems fascinates you, you should definitely check it out!

I FINISHED A SKETCHBOOK! Every page is drawn upon. It only took me... eight years. Wow. I only started working on it in earnest about six months ago, though, so... yeah.
TO CELEBRATE: I want to take one of these sketches and develop it into a full rendered digital painting. I will make a fun little quiz and we'll narrow it down to one drawing. Quiz and logistics coming later, but will be posted here.
A lot of this is me figuring out designs for characters I haven't even written about yet, so look out for that. I'll elaborate one every sketch if you're interested, so keep reading if you want to know who's who. The sketches are generally in reverse chronological order from top to bottom.
1. Alice, a new character in Star and Marcie and the Forces of Evil, my latest project. She's fighting. She's a fighter. She's a love interest, but I hope I make her interesting on her own.
2. Cinder, wearing a shirt Kowari and Kultarr got for her. He will never take it off.
3. Various faces for Iako, a character in my next project that I'm 90% sure on the design for. She lives in a world of kitsunes who accidentally got addicted to gaining their nine tails through murder. Also magic powers are cursed. Iako wants to make magic better, so she goes on a trip to a mysterious island that holds the key to ending the curses... and their lives. Also it's based on the original premise of Lightlark. Hehe. Prologue can be found here. It's part 2.
4. lorge Sílthéy and small derg.
5. Practicing SilkWings and playing around with dragon faces, plus their defining attributes.
6. ANCIENT Sílthéy expression practice. This is years before the eye redesign, but you can still get the essence of her character and how she's born out of my religious trauma.

10. a. Evelyn, the protag of a story I'd like to tell someday. I can't say much more than that, except that it's a tragedy of epic proportions.

11. Alice and Shinjai. Shinjai is a main character in SAMATFOE, and she and Alice have an almost-thing going.
12. Iako and a still unnamed... side character? They're studying the book Iako gets in the prologue.
13. This is [NAME REDACTED]. They're from a universe inspired by Star Wars, but if it was animated and also deeply weird. [NAME REDACTED] is [TOP SECRET INFORMATION]
14. First drawing of Alice. Figuring out her cheekmarks, and what I wanted to keep in her show design (she's based on a one-off background character).
15. More Iako drawings. Left out her hair in a, can't remember if it was intentional or not.
16. A dragon from a Wings of Fire inspired sci-fi world.
17. RPG species. They're aliens who are eusocial, and females are split into four "genders"/roles in society. This gender is soldier, distinguished by their massive claws and size. Their job is everything that requires strength.
18. An early Tethalaos, and also an entirely plausible form for them to take.
19. Above mentioned RPG species. This gender is gatherer, distinguished by their small body and delicate hands.
20. Another dragon from above mentioned Wings of Fire inspired sci-fi.
21, 23-26. More sketches of [NAME REDACTED]. As you might guess, I quite like them. I just think they're neat, and I wanted to get their design down solidly.

27. Shinjai's new crown, as seen in the latest chapter of SAMATFOE.
28. Funny Christmas Carol-inspired AU of SAMATFOE that I drew after being bludgeoned over the head with Christmas music for hours in a holiday sale I was working at.

36. Espina, a character from an urban-fantasy boarding school story about being bonded to animals people often find disgusting and repulsive. Espina controls wasps.
37. All the they/them nonbinary characters in SAMATFOE at the time of this drawing. From left to right: Nova, Toffee, Necahua, Dr. Edevane, Mayhem and Miette Maizley, Higgs, and of course, Tethalaos. Drawn at a nonbinary people meetup.
38. Sílthéy again
39. The oldest drawing in the book, Darkstalker from before we even knew what he looked like. An old doodle, but it proves how dedicated I was to Darkstalker being a good guy back in the day.
40. A design for an old idea I had of a hollow mountain filled with outcasts from society. Might revisit it, there's enough there to make at least a novella.
41. Toffee fashion sketches.
42. An old drawing of Sílthéy in her Wings of Fire dragon form, a hybrid named Liminal (nicknamed Lin). I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, honestly.
43. Sílthéy even BIGGER mad
44. More from the hollow mountain. The outcasts are protected by these guys, and in exchange they're cleaned and fed.

E - Empty Halls to Echo - Ao3 / Tumblr : The Punisher!AU! Billy has to take the stairs. He finds something unexpected.
N - Noise Complaint - Ao3 / Tumblr : Jack Reacher Movies. Charlie at her door is never a good thing...but at least he's effective when it comes to dealing with the noise above her.
S - Snowed In - Ao3 / Tumblr : Sons of Anarchy. It's the last time she does Gemma a favour. Especially now that she's trapped with someone she can't stand.
R - Rebuilding A Home by thatmagickjuju / @thatmagickjuju : Four Brothers fic. E - Echoes by YanderexBabydoll / @seijorhi - Tokyo Revengers fic. There’s a sadness that hangs thick and heavy in the air around you. Grief and pain etched into the very foundations of this house. But you’re broken, too – hollowed out with emotions still too raw to touch. Maybe that's why you were drawn to it. (Ridea's note: I've reread this fic at least 4 times. It's the best type of spooky.)

A quick comic I did for @neilak20's birthday on August 10, featuring characters from her webnovel Book of CoL: Neoni (cat ears), Eterna (horns), Thunderskull (Thunderskull), and Meat Box Page (in box form)
It was going to be in colour before I realized there were no colour refs for Neoni and I was too committed to having her in here for the drinks thing that I decided it'd be easier to just do lines, and I'm glad. Even with me taking every shortcut possible, it still took a while, but that's comics for you.
I'm also pleased that this is apparently in-character? Of course my shitposts would be in character lol

guillermo del toro’s pinocchio is a beautiful film but my god no one has adapted that story like neverafter. you can never look at it the same way again after listening to lou wilson, a black man, explaining that he chose to play as pinocchio because it’s a story about a little boy who isn’t allowed to make mistakes. that in pinocchio's story, he is fundamentally barred from childhood at once upon a time. he must earn something that everyone else is granted from birth. the other boys get to tell lies and play and get into trouble, but when pinocchio does the same thing there are grave and violent consequences. his pinocchio is trying to understand why the world is so unfair, why the rules are so different for him, why everyone else gets to be a real boy.
and I think about it every day.

Shipping is fun and all but I swear every single time someone makes a comment, whether as a joke or in a legitimate analysis, about there being "no other explanation" for a pair's interactions, I lose just a bit more of my sanity
Like, no, you guys don't get it. Romance is not about the Amount of devotion, it's about the COLOR. the FLAVOR of it all. a character can be just as devoted to their platonic friend as they are to their romantic partner, and they don't love either of them more, just differently.
But because the majority of people still have it stuck in their minds that romance exists on the highest tier of love, I'm stuck seeing endless takes that boil down to "these two care about each other too much for it to NOT be romantic" as if that's the core determining factor to how literally any of this works
In conclusion: stop telling me that I don't understand the story if I don't interpret the leads as romantic, I am TIRED

btw. your search for the most morally upright and ethical piece of media that has the most correct “representation” will destroy your ability to find the most profound and beautiful and human of stories. and may even destroy the stories themselves before they are created. if you even care.
#the search for the Ideal Representation is both unattainable and soul-crushing. childrens cartoons moral codes are not#the best way to judge a piece of media#and the stories created by the very people in the communities that are most silenced are always the first ones to be#targeted for their Problematic Factors#as if any story can properly encapsulate the breadth of every complex human experience in one go#something isn't inherently deserving of being reduced to Irredeemable Media status just because you cannot personally relate to it#on the other hand approaching every single story as if its only value is its Shipping Status and how you can#incorporate it into your identity (and stake your Moral Uprightness based on how Ethically you consume said media)#is not necessarily any better. but different post is needed.#aughhhh bite bite chomp kill

Happy (belated) birthday @erinhime83!
I kept it simple rather than busting my hand (I learned from my last picture, yeesh) even more and it still took longer than I anticipated, ahaha. That was mostly because I was flip-flopping what story I should draw. I was seriously tempted to draw something Angelus Dei, but Erin has been posting Division design pictures and set it as her project on NaNo, so I thought it’d be helpful to her muse to go with that. 😂
It actually took me a while because…I haven’t drawn too much for Cataclysm (consistent with my trend of drawing less overall), but what I have drawn is like, 90% Swift Star. I should pick something different, since there are tons of characters and designs I could use, but drawing the main girl is super easy. It’s a guaranteed winner. But I hadn’t drawn her sister yet, so hey!! That’s something new! It works because their outfits are so similar, you get a kind of symmetry (not real symmetry, but like…thematic symmetry, I’m sure there’s a better word for that).
It’s great because I already have a set idea of how to draw Nova/Swift Star, but Luna/Cosmic Moon was new to me. So I drew her the same way, lol. They are sisters. And wound up accidentally giving her a scimitar instead of the big-ass pirate? sword she normally wields. By the point I realized, I didn’t want to go back and change it. Maybe this is her sword when she needs to be light and delicate, I don’t know. 😂
