Magical healing that doesn't immediately or fully mend everything, that can only hasten or bolster the body's own ability heal, that lends a bit of power and a nudge in the right direction, or tips the scales just enough in their favour, slowing bleeding or dampening pain or fighting infection or replenishing strength, but still leaves the slow remaining process of time being the best healer to truly complete the job.
#this is how healers work in the thief of hearts universe#they can give an assist#but their own bodies take on some of the damage#so major healing is a no no#if they try to reverse life threatening or serious internal damage#the healer can actually die from it too

So, uh, I’ve been wanna to post about my writing, but I also love drawing, so, have some concept art!
This guy’s title is ‘The Wandering Lantern’, he’s a guiding spirit of the hearth and warmth in a permanently frozen tundra (called Nixarian in my notes). He’s also known as ‘The Man of the Moths’ or ‘Kindle Man’.
The idea for this guy is he’s a type of immortal, specifically of the reincarnates over and over variety. Specifically specifically, he goes through a maiden-mother-crone cycle.
Spawns in as a young man (apprx 20-22 yrs old) with a bow and quiver and actively hunts the various demons/undead/evil spirits of the mountains & tundra. As he grows into middle age, he wards off the undead with the bow and uses a lantern to guide people through blizzards and pitch black nights. As a small old man he forgoes the bow and is rarely seen, but the light of his lantern always sways in the distance, keeping watch over the people.
These or just concepts of him in his middle-age phase, I’m working on wise old man and hot-heated young man.

“you don’t owe anyone anything” no. of course not. but then you also can’t expect genuine connections or any depth to your relationships. community is about caring about each other. making sacrifices for one another. it’s about persistence and fighting for what you’ve built when things get hard. it’s helping your friend move, picking them up from the airport. it’s being there for them at their worst and at their best. it’s holding their hand and knowing that once your hand needs holding they’ll be right there too. so no, you don’t owe anyone anything but please don’t act surprised when that means you end up completely isolated.

Writing two characters who you intend from the beginning to have a romantic relationship, writing characters for each other, is absolutely fantastic in its own right, but there is something to be said for writing two characters independently, and then a good bit into the writing process seeing them side-by-side and going “GASSSSPP WAIT A MINUTE”

Soldiers who've trained and fought together for years and now move like two halves of a whole, always watching each other's back.
Fantasy duo who've perfected their method of fighting side-by-side with weapons and magic. Or who use magic to strengthen each other, magic bolstering their fighting.
Near strangers forced together by a dire situation, having to work together to survive. They're a little awkward, a little clumsy, but necessity gives way to partnership. Trauma keeps them together after. Their struggles and growth as they learn to work together.

This WorldBuilding Wednesday I've got some fun facts about the city Thief of Hearts takes place in!
The perpetually winter night city of Rime is divided loosely into four 'quarters'.
The Commerce Quarter is where many city craftsfolk and trade merchants who've docked in port sell their wares. Most of this trade takes place either in the city square, which caters to out of town merchants who rent temporary stalls, or Market Row, which is a collection of small storefronts owned by local merchants.
The Smoke Quarter is the main manufacturing district. Shipyards along the waterfront build or repair trading vessels, as the magic-infused wood of nearby forest trees is in high demand to create faster, more resilient ships. The Smoke Quarter gained its name from the forges at its heart that make their living smelting Starsilver ore from the mine outside the city.
The High Quarter is the residential area for the city's affluent residents. Well-kept row houses and large mansions house officers of the governing Cohort, wealthy craftsfolk and salvage wreckers, and leaders and ranking members of the magical Syndicates. The High Quarter is one of the few places in the city with enough light to make color distinct, and many of the buildings are painted in ways that take advantage of that.
The River Quarter is separated from the rest of the city by the river that flows through it. This area is essentially the slum district, comprising about one-third of the city's area while housing more than three-quarters of its residents in rickety tenement housing. Most residents of the River Quarter are those Gifted with magic who believed the city would be a safe haven, only to find out that while magic is less regulated in Rime than the rest of the kingdom, so is everything else.

ok writeblr i have a question and it does not matter if you answer re fanfic or original work:
do you nerds know what themes you intend to tackle in longer works before you start, or are the themes a fun little surprise you don't uncover until the nth draft?
#I start with characters#and who they are and what they tell me informs the theme#if I write intentionally trying to tackle a theme it never sounds as good#it rings hollow because the characters are only vehicles for a statement#so I let them be people first#and then they make choices and do things that draw out a theme#currently thief of hearts is doing a lot of exploring what makes life worth fighting for#in a world that doesn't seem to have any good future to offer#and that's really just because Rory started having an existential crisis#not what I came here to talk about
