#one piece party is underrated anyways

Do you ever think about that one chapter in the 7th volume of One Piece Party in which Usopp, Fake Luffy and Doffy form a temporary alliance, based on fear and a chocolate bar that was shoved up a fellow prisoners ass for 12 months, to break out of Impel Down or is it just me?

hello i saw ur yuuta piece and loved how u write !! could u write smth similar perhaps for megumi 🤧🤧 he needs more love .. 🍀
*:・゚✧*:・゚college student!megumi fushiguro hc dump
Tumblr media Tumblr media
pairing: megumi fushiguro x f!reader warnings: 18+ mdni, mix of sfw and nsfw content under the cut, a very obscenely american depiction of college, just me pouring my heart out to the most perfect underrated college bf ever. wc: 1300
college student!megumi fushiguro who enrolls in university as a biology major, minoring in english on the pre-veterinarian track, carefully selecting his college after agonizing over whether or not he wanted to be a writer or a vet, ultimately choosing the latter after an impressive tour of a research lab with leaders on the field who eagerly and enthusiastically answer every single one of his questions, no matter how miniscule or thorough. goes home with a stupid grin on his face that yuuji won't stop taking pictures of—"yuuji, would you chill the fuck out? it was just a college tour."
college student!megumi fushiguro goes home and quickly accepts his offer, orders two sweaters from the university's online tour, visits tsumiki at the hospital and tells her all about where he plans to go for the next four years.
college student!megumi fushiguro who has a very, very eventful freshman year—
he takes public transport around campus, has an old, beaten up pair of headphones that he probably got from thrifting, listens to beach house, cocteau twins, the neighbourhood, cigarettes after sex, sometimes songs that nobara and yuuji have recommended to him in the groupchat. acts like the brooding, silent type, until you accidentally knock into him during a nasty bump on the road, and he very quickly loses his composure and helps you out, beats himself up afterwards for not getting your name
finds you later at his biology lab, pleasantly surprised and trying to force down any visible signs of excitement when you get paired together for the rest of the semester. lets you take his phone without any fuss to type your number down, keeps the heart you've left besides your name and texts you that night to make plans to go on a date work on the lab report due that week
mentions you offhandedly during the debrief dinner he has at least a couple times a week with yuuji and nobara, frowns when they freeze and look at each other in that skitterish, excited way that they do when they're in on something together. "megumi, you never, ever talk about girls!"
he finds every excuse to see you outside of class. "damn, i guess we're gonna have to work on the report later, i'll see you at 6?" or "i think we need to talk about the objectives over some lunch at this new sushi place in town, anyway—"
you go along with it because it's so painfully obvious, but you don't have the heart to break whatever cool guy, aloof persona he's kind of determined to uphold (megumi, please, for the love of god, just learn how to ask someone out on a date)
he works hard to find new places he thinks you'll like and at some point, you guys just stop working on reports altogether and just start having fun around campus
sends you game pigeon texts throughout the day, lets you win at 8ball, but never, ever backs down from word hunt. he will score 30k points over you and not break a sweat.
rolls up his lab coat once in class and your brain short-circuits, man has an insane sleeper build, grabs your microscope slides for you and easily returns your microscope for you. "you okay?" "yup! completely and totally fine!"
i cannot stress enough how oblivious he is, though. you guys go to parties together, he grabs your drinks for you, holds your waist when someone gets too rowdy, and leave together. somehow, this man still thinks you don't reciprocate his feelings.
he wants to confess, he does, but there's all these logistics and things he has to plan for, has to do it in just the right way, at the right place, wracks his head at night trying to think of a way to just tell you. yuuji calls him fucking stupid one night and for once, he agrees.
gets too busy fussing and concerning over what he would do when the time comes, doesn't even stop and consider the fact that you might just beat him to it!
"'gumi," he literally has his head on your lap while he's doing an assigned reading for class, and it's probably one of the most peaceful days he's had in a while, but the way you smile and say his name makes his heart skip a beat. "wanna go out with me?"
man, it's like the floodgates open after that. he gets so much more direct and confident—"we're gonna go volunteer at that animal shelter this weekend," and "i'm picking you up for dinner, is chinese okay?"
not the type for public displays of affection, but makes sure you're in his orbit all the time, somehow. glances across the lab when your professor blunders in the middle of the lecture, a hand on the small of your back while he maneuvers you through the street, places his hand above yours on the train while you're holding onto the pole
takes photos of you all the time, has a collection of different cameras, makes yuuji take photos of you and him on nights out with the disposable camera, photos of you looking absolutely adorable on the digital camera, and dumb, funny photos of you that you hate but he loves
nights spent at his dorm watching trashy reality shows (he acts like he doesn't give a shit but gasps louder than you whenever someone gets slapped), studying for your next exam only to end up making out on the floor, cooking ramen noodles just to end up making out on his twin bed, getting ready together and making out when he hoists you up to the counter and knocks all his (and your) shit over. "gumi, i still have toothpaste in my mouth—" "hm, i like mint."
loves loves loves to kiss you. will have hours-long make out sessions in his dorm or yours, will keep going even if your roommate walks in, doesn't even register their presence—too focused on whatever flavor of lip gloss you've got on or that cute top you're wearing that day
his second favorite thing to do is to leave marks in places only he can see. doesn't mean to do that, he swears, but you can see a ghost of a smile when he helps readjust the straps of your dress to hide a blooming hickey on your shoulder.
has this dumbstruck look on his face when you have sex for the first time, gasps and grips your ass with a strength that you were only vaguely aware of when you sink down on his length for the first time, low groans and narrowed eyes. "god, i think you're gonna kill me."
slowly ends up being the one to control the pace, bouncing you up and down on his dick for his own pleasure, even as you're squealing and scratching his back and deliriously trying to thrust back, only to be overpowered
could eat you out for hours, but also loooooves receiving head, loves the way your eyes shimmer when you take him deeper into your throat, the gagging, lewd noises that you make and the way you look up at him, asking if that was good. "that was fucking amazing. 10/10, no notes."
remember how he takes photos of you all the time? he has some polaroids of you in some.... scandalous positions hidden in his drawer that he likes to... use in times of desperation
doesn't initiate a whole lot at the beginning because he's still in the "learning phase," but once he gets you to cum within two minutes, it brings out his competitive spirit. "wonder how many more times you can cum again... think you got another two in you?"
basically living together by the end of the year, because he sleeps better when you're near and his whole dorm is littered with mementos that remind him of you. has that coffee blend you love in his kitchen cabinet, your toothbrush on the other side of his, and when he comes back from lecture to see your smiling face hanging upside down from his futon, thinks he might just want to spend the rest of his life with you.

Places you should add to your little town/city in your fantasy world!!
Post offices. Wild, I know. But give me the unhinged kind. Pingeons and little postal dragons all over the place. You enter. The most disgusting smell fucking assaults your nostrils. You know what it is. Letter in hand, you go up to the counter. The postal worker is just a slightly bigger pigeon. You shed a tear.
PLAYGROUNDS!! Create the most dangerous kinds of playgrounds, the ones suburban moms would TRIP if they ever saw one. Monkey bars that are way too tall, swings that go full circle... The metal slide stays the same, it's already painful enough.
PARKS!! MAKE IT ALIVE!! Show people going on walks, reading beneath trees. C'mon most of them are already hundred years old (And are going to die after that CR 15 creature wrecks the town) anyways!! Show couples and picnics, show a family enjoying the sunday, give me someone picking flowers for their loved ones.
A bakery! Do you know how much these places are underrated? And do you know how much plot potential they have? Every good story starts with food poisoning or granny's recipe! Give me a place your players/readers are going to treat like home and, for once, it's not a tavern or a guild.
Government buildings! Give me a town hall that has a kilometric line in front of it. Give me a registry that is as old as this town. Give me police stations! Give me courtrooms! Make one of your players get arrested and now all of the party has to go through burocracy like a bunch of normal people!
(Who am I kidding? You don't need to make them get arrested. They are going to do that for you.)
Touristic attractions! Give me a full-on statue of the country's leader! Give me museums! Give me streets, ruins and whatnot that attract thousands of tourists everyday! Give me an annoying city guide that tries to get the party's attention everytime!
Magazine stands! Magazines don't exist? Newspaper stands! From the Queen's Journal to the most questionable new piece of Fox's Tailtracker, you have it all! Make your players doubt what's actually happening, sprinkle a little fake news... Or is it fake at all?
...Toy stores. OK HEAR ME OUT. Make magic toys; miniature skyships that actually fly, metal toy dragons that expel fire, little wands that make little light spells, wooden creatures that can move and make noises... Make children happy! And your players too because they will waste their money on these stuff.
Instrument store!! Make your bards happy with special instruments or just weird ones! Give me a battle in one of those that is just filled with funny noises and the worst battle soundtrack ever!!
Not exactly a place but... Cleaning carts!!! Show me people cleaning the streets, picking up the trash, cutting trees!! Make the town look clean!! Give me an old man that is really proud of his work!!!
(or ways to make your players feel even worse when the villain destroys the town later on :) )

Hi i see an underrated writer and i have a request for you! (Please take your time because overworking is a no no)
(if not male mc then gender neutral mc it is)
M!Mc/Yuu/Reader who used to be a butler for seven siblings in his world, but somehow the housewardens remind him of the seven royals he used to take care of in a young age. He memorizes every like and dislike from each housewarden, giving them food or gifts that they dont answer for but still bought it (even though hes running low in thaumarks) Even helping them academically or just veing there as a friend. (The ultimate husband material) but he rarely takes care of himself because hes so preoccupied with the housewardens.
(is it okay for it to be a headcanon type fic?)
Hi Anon tysm !! Anyone can read this, I just used Male pronouns (mainly near the bottom.)
(For riddles part I’m not checking the 810 rules of queen of hearts so if I accidentally let one pass just ignore it lmao)
RIDDLE ROSEHEARTS
Riddle always noticed during unbirthday parties you would always bring everything needed for them. And would especially always make sure to help clean everything.
After everything that happened in book 1, you and him had gotten closer and due to that you would always bought him strawberry tarts.
However, once he entered Ramshackle and saw how… poor it looked he immediately began to piece everything together.
About how you always listened to him, studied with him and most importantly how you always took care of him and bought him stuff.
Once you did tell him the truth he would get flustered, embarrassed about getting compared to a prince.
LEONA KINGSCHOLAR
At first he thought you were just another Ruggie just looking for free money, but after that thought he just thought you were imnitatied of him and were actually treating him like royalty, unlike others….
And he was very surprised when you even started to get him gifts.
He even got more surprised when you started to push him to actually go do schoolwork even though you treated him like a prince.
But tbh he probably found out or just asked you directly.
Once he finds out though he’d be honored that he would actually remind you of a prince.
AZUL ASHENGROTTO
I know for sure he would be flustered whenever you would treat him fancy and stuff.
But he would also be extremely happy when you start working at Mostro Lounge for FREE.
Whenever you do give him gifts though he gets so embarrassed and flustered thinking how you remember this.
And if you guys were dating and he like really likes you, and saw Ramshackle for this first time. Bro would be shocked at how much money you spent on him. (After spending most of his life getting bullied he would never ever expect that.)
Anyways once you did tell him about how he reminds you of a brother and a PRINCE? He would immediately blush and start wondering, how does he remind you of one lmao.
KALIM AL-ASIM
ok but honestly would he see a difference with how you treat him compared to others?
Jamil would be extremely grateful though that you took his spot.
Although he would appreciate all those gifts you gave him and even fund ramshackle for you !!!!
Once he finds out you reminded him of a prince he would be happy and wanna throw a party because he didn’t know he was that, princely ig idk.
(Sorry if this was short I mean I couldn’t rlly think of anything.)
VIL SCHONEIT
He would for sure think at first that your using him for his popularity or just think your some fanboy.
However after getting to know you better you guys became friendlier and he soon appreciated whenever he saw you as he knew he would be treated like a ✨ queen ✨ around you.
After seeing the state of Ramshackle and asking about where all the money was going to… he immediately made you move into Pomeifore while he redid the whole thing !!!
I feel like he would use you as a test for makeup idk.
Also when he found out why you treat him like that?! He would be honored and would like you even more !!
IDIA SHROUD
You immediately gained his interest when you started treating him different then some “introverted Otaku”
Like Azul, he would be flustered/embarrassed at every little thing you did for him.
No bc he would actually call you husband material on accident.
But you would catch his heart if you did buy him the newest games !!!!
Him, reminding you of a prince?! He would be so speechless after that. Like how?! He was so introverted.
(Sorry if this was so short!)
MALLEUS DRACOCIA
You immediately gained Sebeks trust, and you two must be friends.
Malleus would for sure be surprised. Your not afraid of him AND you actually treat him like a regular prince not some scary one.
Malleus is head over heels for you. And if you buy him ice cream and get a matching tomogatchi to him?! You took his heart twice.
Aside from that he would be so greatful to have you as his friend/boyfriend.
And he would actually be so happy that he reminded you of a prince (I mean he is but like you actually treat him like one and bc he isn’t so lonely anymore.
Bro is setting up your marriage lmao
IM SO SORRY THIS REQUESF HAS BEEN SITTINF IN HERE FOR A MONTH AND IM ON WRITERS BLOCK RN
I’m so sorry once again I hope you enjoyed it anon!!

My april films list
The Scar/Blizna (1976): When I was in college my roommate was in a Polish class and she had access to a library of films and we watched a lot of Krzysztof Kieślowski and they are all good, I think. This one is about a mid level manager who inherits a white elephant of a project: clear a forest to build an industrial plant. The local people and the forest itself turn against him. It's magical realism with that Slavic touch of fatalism that always feels relevant.
Sweetie (1989): I saw this in the 90s at a film festival and so it was a bit of a shock when The Piano came out and it felt like you could not have two more different films at least on the surface, but both are directed by Jane Campion. Sweetie is a frank and often dark comedy about an ungovernable woman--a cautionary tale about the infantilisation of women, seen through the eyes of her long suffering sibling.  Akira (1987): Iconic anime with a beautiful smooth style. Copied so frequently it can look a bit basic to those who've grown up with its imitators, but the heart of it is a great score and atmospheric noir setting that make the set pieces like the night motorcycle ride through Tokyo the perfect accompaniment to millennial angst. Near Dark (1987): Katherine Bigelow's shot at the sexy vampire genre features most of the cast of Aliens as a troop of vampires who follow around a Confederate soldier. Bill Paxton does an entertainingly nasty turn as one of the baddies. Feels like an Aliens/Lost Boys AU and that is a compliment, really.
Cleo from 5-7 (1962): Not to be like this already in what amounts to a two sentence blurb, but the summary for this film describes Cleo as a hypochondriac? Excuse me but she is waiting around to find out if she has cancer. It seems to me that this is a movie about the way women are dismissed and not seen, even when they are famous and actually the center of attention wherever they go. On the surface she looks like a spoiled diva, but behind the scenes we see she is frightened and lonely. Anyway fuck the patriarchy and Free Cleo! Twelve Angry Men (1957): We rewatched this because my son is on some weird reddit sub thread discord where everyone rpgs as jurors from this movie...I'm not joking. Imagining a super niche fandom for Jack Warner. It exists. THe internet is a wild place. Anyway, this holds up. Don't mix up Syndey Lumet and Sydney Pollack like I did, lol. Embarrassing!
Ashes and Diamonds (1958): Polish film master, Andrez Wadja's be bop riff on neo realism, is a chronicle of the final day of German occupation, and a Hail Mary attempt by a young resistance fighter to wrest the country back from the Soviet Army which is already there. It's a hopeless mission, born of drunken desperation in smokey back rooms, one that comes apart in daylight. It's feels like Rebel without a Cause, but like...he has a cause? There a sense of tragic waste that mirrors Nicholas Ray's vision of restless American youth. Scoop (2024): A rather weak entry in the behind the scenes journalism drama genre that I seem to be unable to resist in any form. This has Billy Piper as a booking agent who manages the coup of getting Prince Andrew to sit down for an interview with the press about the pedophilia allegations. Your average episode of The Thick of It, probably has more meat than this made for TV film.
The Two Popes (2019): For those playing along at home this was my fourth time watching this. What can I say, two of my fave old lovies flirting away in Pope costumes. It's a comfort film. You are not immune to propaganda. Bulworth (1998): Featuring just about every working black actor of the era, this movie was kind of ahead of its time. About a liberal politician who is so depressed about the state of his party being owned by powerful business interests that he decides to commit suicide by hiring a hitman to kill him so that his family will at least get the insurance. Warren Beatty at his most ridiculous, this is underrated gem.
Great Expectations (1974) After revisiting this version, I went back to David Lean, which is no surprise. This is a made for TV movie that has a lot of familiar faces from 50s British film including Robert Morley and my boi Anthony Quayle. Michael York is Pip. Heat (1995): I might become slightly obsessed with Michael Mann after watching all this moody atmosphere punctuated with bursts of violence, with long passages set to a synth score that made Chris Fleming want to crash his car. Some beautiful lighting and camera work in the final set piece which takes place on an airport runway. Iconic and yet, bloated and overlong and I just don't know why I like it so much? Maybe it's Al Pacino's reactions which are just so off the wall in some scenes, and the disconcerting normality of the other people in the same scenes, ya know? Like they are in two different movies. I shot Andy Warhol (1996): Watched this for Jared Harris (who is adorable as always and terrific as always and completely sinks into the role as always) and came away remembering why Lily Taylor was a 90s icon/IT girl and boy can she act. Like wow. Andy Warhol is the title character, but it's more about Valerie Solanas the radical feminist lesbian who shot him because she believed he stole her work. (The movie implies that he did, a little bit...). Her SCUM manifesto remains controversial to say the least, but her story is a utterly heartbreaking, told with humanity and nuance. Actually a great choice for Pride month because it talks about gay history and it's not pretty or comfortable but it's necessary to learn. Hopscotch (1980): Delightful comedy starring Walter Matthau and Judy Collins as a spy couple. Combines actually decent spy thriller with actually funny stuff and it's romantic and sweet as well.

Arc-V Day 6 and 7
I'm a bit behind. Please @arcvmonth, spare me. Don't turn me into a card.
Anyway, for Understudy Spotlight I wanna briefly talk about Roger. I say briefly, because I'll save most of my thoughts for the Villains Prompt. For now, I gotta say, he's my vote for most underrated Yugioh bad guy. I LOVE villains who think they're hot shit, but turn out to be nothing but smug snakes. Plus, his voice actor NAILS his breakdowns. I was surprised to see so many people disliked him (probably Shōnen fans who can't accept a villain that isn't super-duper powerful). Finally, I love me some Disney Villain Deaths.
Anyway, Day 7: Of Amores, Per the Prophecy
Oh boy, does Arc-V have some banger ships. Some of my faves:
Fruitshipping:
Tumblr media
Main-guy with Main-girl ships in most Shōnen anime tend to hit with the force of a wet fart, with Yugioh being no different. This is because they fall under the trap of making the girl be the only one who constantly thinks of protagonist-kun, whereas the MC is usually only thinking about fighting, eating, and their male rival who they're totally-not-gay-with.
Therefore, it's wild that these two idiots enamored the Arc-V so much as they, and it was via the use of a very simple trick: have both parties be clearly interested in one another. Seriously, Arc-V turns into an epic, interdimensional romantic drama from Season 2, and it's so strange for a franchise like Yugioh (even if it already happened in GX). Yuya spends as much time thinking about Yuzu as she does about him, and that's so refreshing.
One thing I love about this ship is how much they emphasize that the distance between them doesn't diminish their bond. In fact, it's the opposite, when they're separated that their feelings are most in display. Yuzu's duel with Chojiro is one such example: despite not being allowed near one another, Yuzu still had her feelings reach him.
Tumblr media
Them being enemies in their past lives but lovers in this one also adds an extra element of brainrot for me.
Appleshipping and Fallenangelshipping:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wanna re-emphasize this: we NEED more F/M ships where the guy is completely, stupidly in love with the girl. This applies more to appleshipping admittedly; seeing Yugo explode with joy from seeing Rin will never stop melting my heart. Male characters in anime are often shy of showing physical affection toward their love interests, but not Banana-boy. Plus, imagining how they grew up in poverty is interesting.
Serenadeshipping:
OMG THIS SHIP IS SO GOOD. LIKE I KNOW I HAVE MASSIVE YURI BIAS BECAUSE LOVE LIVE FAN BUT STILL. Ok so you obviously got badass and serious Serena with ray-of-sunshine Yuzu, so the dynamic is fun from the get-go. But we also have the fact that Yuzu became one of, if not the, first friends Serena's ever had. Plus there's the "changing clothes" scene and I'm sure you could do some gay awakening shit.
Also Yuzu is so happy upon seeing Serena late in the series. Just look at her!
Tumblr media
And then when Serena betrays them she's so sad. DAMN IT ARC-V, THIS IS FROM THE FREAKING CAPTAIN SOLO EPISODE, WHY IS MY HEART IN PIECES?!
Tumblr media
(Extra angst when you consider this is the last time they spoke before getting thrown into Arc-V)
Finally, I imagine she'd be happy to forever be with Yuzu at the end of the series
Lustershipping:
Tumblr media
similar dynamic as Serenade, but with a rival-to-lovers tint. It's just cute, mmkay? Aesthetically, this is one of my favorites, Masumi's design is great
Genesishipping:
Tumblr media
Sometimes, ships are more interesting for what they don't tell you than for what they do. The showrunners left the nature of Zarc and Ray's relationship ambiguous, which means there's a lot of possible avenues to take it. Enemies to Lovers? Sure, go ahead. Enemies that become lovers because of their new incarnations' unique souls? Works too.
Plus Zarcray fans make some Fire content.
Honorable Mentions: Guiltshipping, Candyshipping, Emblemshipping, Braceletshipping,

Wardrobe 2023 Part 2b: JSKs (Other Brands)
Tumblr media
Emily Temple Cute - Tea Party Print JSK - Teal
This was a lucky secondhand find, and despite its ancient age, it's pretty vibrant and the print is still in good condition (it's the type of printing that cracks eventually). It runs surprisingly large for old ETC, but it's pretty short on me, and the material needs to be ironed a ton before wearing, so I dont wear it much, but it's a nice collection piece.
Tumblr media
Emily Temple Cute - Queen Marie's Fragrance JSK - Navy
So I've found rereleases of this print on lolibrary, but not this particular cut. I might make a listing for it myself sometime. It's very cute, and the salmon ribbon matches well with BTSSB/AATP's 'plum' colour.
Tumblr media
Emily Temple Cute - Pansy Ribbon JSK - Pink
I actually dont remember the name of this one for sure, and cant find a lolibrary listing or any sales pages, so I'm a little stumped. It's very cute though!
Tumblr media
Melody BasKet - M's Pharmacy JSK - Sax
This was one of my first dresses, and I still love it! The medical theme is cute but mature-- a lot of medical themed dresses are too gothic or too overly sweet for me, so they just give me flashbacks to my menhera phase.
Tumblr media
Melody BasKet - Birdcage and Rose JSK - Pink
This is also a favourite, because I have a soft spot for birds (especially cockatiels), and the birds pictured look a lot like my grandmas old bird! Very cute. The shade of pink is a little salmon, and kind of tricky to match, but I ended up finding some meta socks that match perfectly. It's great for casual daily wear when I dont want to get my cotton pieces dirty.
Tumblr media
Melody BasKet - Angel Lace JSK - Ivory
Contrary to the name, there isnt any lace, just lace print. This is another comfy casual dress I use for errands! I actually kind of want the pink, so I can swap the sashes out-- I think this would look cuter with the red sash. Maybe I could handmake one?
Tumblr media
Angelic Pretty - My Favorite Room JSK - Navy (Special set)
This is my favourite AP print, and the only one really left in my closet. Its really underrated, so I got this for cheap! I also found a grey special set version recently, but haven't had a chance to photograph it. It's a little short on me, but I think it's cute anyway.

whats a recipe you think is vastly underrated and wish more people would know about?
Oh that's a great question! On top of the other recipes I've shared before I feel like "Pizza Toast" is very underrated. I can't tell if it's generally underrated or if just my friends coincidentally not knowing these while the rest of the world already makes these all the time.. They are a great warm, savoury snack or a quick homemad dinner. I also made these for parties before cause they can be prepared in advance and then you just bake them when the guests arrive 😉
It's a very "add what you like" recipe without fixed measurements. There's a base mix and then you just add the "toppings" you like and put it on toast and bake it.
For the base I use 1 cup (250ml) of sour cream - the Austrian dairy product (Sauerrahm, or Saure Sahne for my German friends), not the dipping sauce you can get at mcdonalds! For everyone who doesn't have access to that, you can also use a mix of crème fraîche and curd cheese (crème fraîche on its own is too greasy imo) or cream cheese. Put in a bowl, add spices (salt, pepper, oregano) and ca. 200g of shredded cheese (gauda, cheddar, emmentaler work perfectly fine).
Now you can add whatever "toppings" you like. Just make sure that everything is cut into small pieces or alternatively you can throw it all in a food processor. Anyway. My favourite versions are:
Ham or salami/pepperoni and sweet corn (I use the canned one)
Tuna (the canned one in water, not oil) and bell peppers
Dried tomatoes and basil leaves
You really just have to mix it all together, take out some bread (can be whatever kind you like but I usually use toast), spread a little ketchup on it if you want and then spread your mix on top. Bake it in the oven for like 10-15mins at 160-180°C and that's it. 🥳
I make these so often cause they are good, quick and easy to make, and great when you're on a budget. The mix made with 250ml sour cream/cream cheese and ca. 200g cheese is enough for 9-10 slices of bread (aka one baking sheet).
I don't have a picture to add rn, but next time I make my Pizza Toasts I'll take one for reference 😊

3/4: What's your favorite line of narration? [+ dialogue]
For a piece that's 5.5 years old, I think most of the story holds up nicely. I think I did a good job setting the scene and playing into the canon cartoon quirkiness. I can't pick just one, so here's a few moments I like. I think I nailed the cartoon vibes here:
"Not so fast, Timmy Turner!" crowed a young British voice. This was followed by the horrifying stomp of a very large animal's heavy feet. Chloe set down the clock. In slow motion, she and Timmy turned towards the other end of the aisle. Then they grabbed each other's arms and screamed. "Ahhhhh!" Poof's eyes bulged. "How and when did you get that inside?" "Yes! Yes!" Cackling like a madder man than he probably actually was, Foop flew above the shelves, heels kicked up behind him and fists thrust in the air. "Bow down to me, you pathetic human idiots! Or else I shall be forced to crush you under the heels of my mighty persimmon amphibious wrecking ball of chaotic doom! Ahahahaha!" Chloe threw Timmy a jagged look. "You just couldn't resist the giant hippo wish, could you?" He crossed his arms. "Hey, you didn't argue then. Did you have a better way to block the portal door without destroying it and upsetting Poof?" "Fingerprint scanners! Always go for the fingerprint scanners!" "But that's so overplayed."
I think the visuals work well in this scene and don't bog it down. Plus, I love Foop... It's nice. It also balances that "Timmy likes to have fun and Chloe tends to be more practical" vibe without painting Timmy as dumb. Timmy and Chloe are both smart, but Chloe would probably go for a "more effective" solution here while Timmy went for a creative one- which is, of course, a huge part of his character.
This got cut and changed in the final episode, but in the original script for "Fairy, Fairy, Quite Contrary," Remy didn't have cell service in Fairy World and started freaking out because he couldn't come up with anything creative on the spot and he'd never had to be without signal before. Timmy won the duel with his creativity (the most amazing animal ever).
In the final episode, this was changed so that Timmy blurted out the first thing he thought of (a crab with two heads) while Remy did have cell service. We got closure to the Cosmo vs. Juandissimo drama that had been building by having Cosmo taunt Juan until he snapped and lashed out instead of helping Remy.
Anyway, I just think that original script had some cool stuff in it. It's not the only episode to cite Timmy's creativity. Off the top of my head, we also get "The Big Bash," where Cupid specifically tells Timmy that he was invited to a huge Fairy World party because Cupid values his imagination. There are so many things going on with Timmy's character throughout the series, but his imagination is consistently what gets him both into and out of trouble. That is one of the core parts of Timmy's character, and when you strip away his imagination, you lose what makes Timmy "Timmy."
We know that in Season 10, a lot of Chloe's wishes go wrong because she doesn't think before she speaks or she just straight-up makes terrible choices (like wishing that "everyone in Dimmsdale would share everything" which led to absolute anarchy). Chloe has her skills and logic, but Timmy has his experience and imagination.
Like. Timmy has so much experience with wishing that he literally spends the first two episodes mentally face-palming at Chloe's terrible choices, which I still think is hilarious and underrated. He heard Chloe's wording and said, "Oh, that can't end well" even before he'd seen the chaos outside his window. His wishing experience is so underrated - and Chloe straight-up just tells him that he's being rude, even while the city is in chaos around her - and I would have loved to see more of him taking her under his wing. Season 10's got its faults, but the core step-sibling drama is so good...
Since the tail end of the show is especially rough on Timmy's character, I think it's really important in my writing to show how Chloe and Timmy can complement each other without one of them necessarily being "better" than the other.
Yeah, Chloe gets stereotyped as "the perfect kid," and she does have some skills. But you know what she'll sacrifice for that "perfect" image she values? She'll out Mark as an alien and almost get him dissected just so she can get extra credit.
Yes, she's supposedly this certified super sitter who gets along well with little kids, but she struggles to have appropriate expectations for her peers to the point that (with no warning) she ripped away Timmy's ability to talk and screamed that he was the worst friend in the entire universe, "including black holes," because he wasn't walking to school fast enough and was going to make her late.
Yes, she's incredibly patient with "Angel" when Foop is trying to ruin her life, but she's also a pathological liar who will straight-up lie to adults for no reason beyond earning their trust and praise.
Like. That's such a fascinating part of her character and I wish we'd actually talked about how problematic that is for her, but she is literally on-screen lying regularly and there's no getting around that. I know you didn't complete your babysitting certificate within the 2 seconds it took for you to do a front flip, Chloe. I know you didn't bike to Fiji this morning. Mr. Crocker might humor you, but I know.
Chloe means well, but she'll make choices she believes are "objectively good" regardless of the pain it causes others in the process. She'll shut down and deny when things go wrong, while Timmy has a better understanding of consequences and how to work through emotional pain. He's the guy who will go to space to rescue his cruel babysitter from aliens. He'll travel the galaxy to help a rival fight invaders on his home planet. Honestly, his relationship with Mark is so good and pure, and he spent so much of his free time helping Mark get settled on Earth and even helped him celebrate his alien traditions.
Timmy's made his share of mistakes, but the contrast between "Timmy spends 10 seasons keeping Mark's existence secret, to the point that he yells to Cosmo and Wanda to freeze time even though Crocker is literally standing right there and could see him, just to keep Mark safe, and meanwhile Chloe outs him the day after she meets him and almost gets him killed" is SO good... I hate the execution of "Marked Man" with a passion, but Chloe's characterization in it is /chef's kiss. Yes queen, you go face the consequences of your actions. Get freakin' wrecked.
Anyway, I really like this one scene because I think it embodies the characterizations of Timmy and Chloe really well. They're not the same character, and it's important to give them both scenes where they can fail as well as thrive.
[Cnt'd under the cut]
-- Here are some more scenes:
Timmy's reaction here I think was pretty spot-on, and I like Chloe's reminder that they're both abused children and get jealous and hurt easily:
"Ohh yeah." Timmy patted his flashlight against his hand and rolled his eyes. "We used to only have to deal with them on Black Friday, but ever since they started going digital, we have to deal with them on Cyber Monday too. And Gray Tuesday, which is basically the same thing as Black Friday, but for magical creatures all over the universe." "Why on a Tuesday?" "Don't know, don't care. But we have to go to Pixie World tonight. We're running out of time. Do you know whose name I have for the Fairy Reunion gift exchange this year? Jorgen von Strangle's!" Timmy upturned his hands to claws. "If I don't get him an impressive gift, he might grab my throat and crush me into oblivion. Or take my fairies! Or crush me and then take my fairies!" He began to hyperventilate at the thought, twitching his hands and neck about. "Hang on. There's a Fairy Reunion gift exchange? And I wasn't invited?" "Not the part of that sentence I need you to focus on right now, Chloe." "Well, yeah," she muttered, "but I didn't get invited."
The scene where Timmy shines a flashlight in Chloe's eyes is one of my favorite for a quick snippet; I feel like it's a totally realistic thing for a cartoon 11-year-old to do to his friend.
A lone hand snaked out from behind the mattress and jerked her underneath. "Hey!" Before she knew it, Chloe found herself squinting directly into the beam of a stuttering flashlight. Behind it, she could make out two over-sized buck teeth, a battered pink hat, and scruffy brown bangs that fell over a pair of grim blue eyes. Was that striped shirt part of his pajamas? He wore his hat even with his pajamas? "Timmy? Where are Cosmo and Wanda?" As Poof crawled beneath the mattress to join them, she lifted her hand to shield her face. "Hey, can you cut it out? My future self really will need an eye patch at this rate." Timmy switched the flashlight off. "You've got pupils. You're real. I guess I can tell you."
Also... Crockermichael fluff, my beloved...
Chloe looked at her own dance partner, sashaying still. "I hate to do this to you, Kevin." "No, no, please. I would hate to interrupt." His face fell into total deadpan, brows drawn down. If his feet were skittering about any faster, he'd probably have set them on fire. "Really, I understand. It's the Crocker way. Just get it over with." Chloe swept her leg behind his and flipped him over onto his back. Kevin crashed to the floor with a grunt, curling his legs like a squashed beetle ready to die.
Kevin is so dead inside, but I love him.
Overall, I really do like how I wrote Chloe in this story. I think I struck the right balance of Chloe feeling lonely, Chloe being a nice person, and Chloe being skilled at many things. The scene where she kicks H.P. in the jaw "on total instinct" and then it causes a chain reaction of problems is just great.
Also one of my favorite dialogue moments would be the introduction to H.P. (after he's calmed down):
"Look at us." Once the anti-fairy landed, H.P. threw his other arm around his shoulders and pulled him in. "We're all together, celebrating the holidays for another year. Does it get any better than this?" He withdrew then, sniffling and flapping his mittened hands at his eyes. "I won't cry. I told myself I wouldn't cry." Poof floated behind Chloe's shoulder with a repulsed look twisting up his pudgy face. "Whoa. What's up with him?" "Jolly spirits," the anti-fairy grumbled as H.P. caught him in another group hug. This one knocked his monocle out of place. It bobbed on its cord. The anti-fairy rolled his eyes as H.P. mashed their cheeks together. The microphone of H.P.'s headset scraped and stuttered. "He's always like this on Gray Tuesday. One of these years, I shall succeed in reeling him in." The young fairy tapped his cheek. "I will make a note of that for my fanfics and purposely use this information totally out of context just for a laugh at your expense."
H.P. jacked up on Christmas magic to the point that he's giddy and useless for most the story is good fun.
Poof writing fanfics had actually been part of my canon for ages before I wrote this piece... I have an unfinished one-shot I've been sitting on for like 6 years that's about Foop getting obsessed with all the Ninja Cowboy fanfics Poof wrote and then gave up on because they're opposites, and Foop can't bring it up with him without outing himself. It makes me laugh and this line makes me think about that story and I think it's funny.
My favorite one-liner in this piece is probably Timmy shushing Chloe by telling her "not to tell Cosmo and Wanda." I love when the fairy step-siblings act like siblings...
5: What part was hardest to write?
Definitely the scene where the gang is searching for Finley and Finley gets magical overload. I've never liked it and I fought with it so long before I gave up. It's... fine? I'm not even sure how I would make it better now, so it certainly is a thing that happened.
I do love that Timmy and Chloe carry the exploded paper-mâché and glittery goop remains of a pixie while they shop, because that's really funny and again ties into the wacky magical back-up canon. Plus, exploding a character when that IS part of their canon and the audience knows (I presume) that he'll be fine is great.
Although I probably should have made him explode into paperwork... Ah, well.
9: Were there any alternate versions of this fic?
Yes, I shared the alt ending in a post about Longwood a few years ago. It's number 16.
It got cut for several reasons, like Cosmo and Wanda not being around. It would've been an acceptable ending, but it wasn't as fun or dramatic or as "relieving" as dropping into bed at home after a wild evening of being unsupervised kids.
14: Is there anything you wanted readers to learn from reading this fic?
Mostly just some thoughts on my characterization of Chloe and Timmy, as depicted above. Also the brotherly relationship between Timmy and Poof. I genuinely love my take on Poof's personality and I love how he plays off Timmy. He's kind of an instigator and kind of a yes man and he's goofy and inexperienced and I like him.
15: What did you learn from writing this fic?
Probably not to include songs in my stories... I think it's kinda cute, but in a sort of affectionately cringey way that can tip a little far. There's another 130 Prompt I've been working on for a few years which was about a song at a high school dance that Foop takes offense to, but writing lyrics and wondering how they come across is more nerve-wracking than it needs to be.

I think my favorite underrated story trope, especially for darker narratives, goes something like this: - Death (in some form or another) is slowly marching closer/it's already arrived and will consume everything, there is no escape. - Everyone but the reader is somehow blind to this fact OR they all know but studiously pretend it doesn't exist, instead giving priority to the petty dramas and lighthearted silliness of their daily lives. I LOVE that, I don't know why. I think it fascinates me to watch a story unfold that at first seems shallow and mundane, maybe even boring, until you start to realize that it's all extremely finite and is gradually being consumed by an unstoppable Bad Thing that nobody in the cast talks about---at least not until it's far too late. Anyway, here are a few pieces of media that nail that trope in my opinion (heavily biased towards mcyt content): - Hermitcraft season 8 - All of the Life series seasons so far, and they drift from "nobody really knows how bad things are" to "everybody knows but still refuses to acknowledge it" as the cycle continues - The music video of this beautiful beautiful song (watch till the end to get what I mean) ((for those who don't care to follow the link, here's a summary: The video is mostly of a middle aged woman and her friends dancing at a club, but at a certain point the camera cuts briefly to a mysterious black-clad woman under a blue light who seems to be invisible to everyone, solemnly watching the party. At the end of the video, the camera slowly pans up to the ceiling, where there are a bunch of bodies or mannequins floating face up as if dead. No one on the ground looks up at them. The song itself is melancholy and talks about someone hoping their love will live on/be remembered after they die.)) I'll probably come back and add more as I think of them. The key component of this trope is the reader/viewer's experience of being constantly aware that, no matter what the characters are doing or what they care about, it's all a futile distraction, and the end of the story was set in stone before it even began.

So, I posted earlier about some of Trigger’s more unsightly outfits, but I think there is something to be said for the looks he actually got right.  (Excuse the quality of some of these pictures, the options were a bit limited)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is rare that you see any character from OFAH in short sleeves, because, well, it’s England. Everyone dresses in layers the majority of the time. Trigger is a character we never once see without long sleeves. The lightest outfit we ever see him in is in “The Jolly Boys’ Outing”, were he’s down to his collar shirt, with his trouser legs rolled up to go paddling. I bring this up, because Trigger is one character who is almost never seen without some sort of knitwear. He pairs almost every outfit, either with a jumper, or a sweater vest, even when it does not go at all. This was not exactly unusual for the time, but the fact that it’s more specific to him than any other character, makes me wonder if this was down to him having been raised by his grandparents. I wonder if he was continually ordered, as a child, to put on a jumper before going out. I like to think so.
Anyway, there are times in the series were his jumpers suit him well and actually look pretty cute. My favourite is the big red jumper with black hoops around the neck, pictured above. Like all his good jumpers, it looks best with his iconic donkey jacket, which is my favourite jacket of his. Black suits him best, I think, and I like the comfortable, slouchy look. I also think it factors into my headcanoning him as autistic, and feeling like his donkey jackets and jumpers are his safe clothes, because they are soft, loose and familiar.
Here are some more donkey jacket/jumper combos that I like.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is also his full work outfit, which includes a set of green overalls. A sadly underused outfit, but one that I believe features quite prominently in the musical.  (Sorry, this picture is so tiny, I literally could not find a good photo of him in the overalls)
Tumblr media
Trigger’s work/casual clothes are pretty iconic, but his suits are better recognised. There was his electric blue number that is his best known, the tartan piece I mentioned previously, the rarely seen red jacket. He also has a few suits in varying shades of brown and grey, none of which are particularly nice. Trigger cleans up well in a smart dress, but as he is a character who’s eye for fashion is just a bit off, it is the suits that let him down. There was one instance, however, where Trigger looked really, un-ironically sharp. That was in the episode “Chain Gang”.
The suit itself was a rather dull colour, but in typical Trigger fashion, he wore a bright shirt underneath. A lovely dark purple one. When outside, the dull suit was covered by a long, black coat (again, he looks lovely in black). And he topped it off with a brown trilby. It’s a seriously underrated Trigger look.
It occurs to me as well, that though Trigger is stated to enjoy wearing hats, we don’t see him in many. He has his flat cap, this trilby and a tweed hat in the final episodes, but he is usually seen bare headed. A shame we never got to see him in a pink hat, like the one he said was stolen at a party.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lastly, here’s a picture of Trig looking pretty in a loud shirt a sweater vest.
Tumblr media
Not pictured here is the blue jacket he puts on to leave the pub, which he only wears for a couple of episodes. I think it might be denim, but I’m not really sure. Here is a poor quality picture of it.

Hi! Love your blog. I just saw my first production of Sweeney Todd and it was great! It was small though, chorus and stage wise. They did the best they could but God That's Good and City on Fire just needed more people to complete the atmosphere! However, I thought the smaller cast/stage worked amazingly well during Johanna Quartet (it was the peak of the show in my opinion)! Anyway, no pressure (and I haven't been following anything with the revival) but I was wondering if the production that you saw brought up any particular hopes for the revival? In terms of staging and direction. Would love to hear any more thoughts you have! :)
First of all, thank you! Second of all, I am so glad you enjoyed it! I get what you mean, a small stage can be a blessing and a curse, but Sweeney Todd is one show where they can do some interesting things with it.
I'd say the production I just saw was pretty standard Sweeney Todd in terms of staging, but I do have some hopes for the revival:
I would like for the revival to be Victorian-era but the more I see of the promos/images released the less I think that's going to happen! Who knows though (it is kind of weird to me what little info we have so far in terms of visuals.) At the very least, my biggest hope is for the production to be elaborate and larger-than-life, rather than toned down and minimalist. I think there is a lot of potential with Sweeney Todd in terms of set and costumes. The way that they keep touting the large orchestra makes me think that this will be the case!
Interactive! I am hoping for a Sweeney Todd that engages with the audience a little. Ex. the first time I saw Sweeney Todd, he asked audience members for a shave during "Epiphany." Now, idk if it's a good idea for Josh Groban to be menacing people with razors, but some kind of interaction would be fun and fitting, and to my knowledge it's never been done professionally.
Inclusion of iconic set pieces. I need the chair!!!! I will not have a revival without the chair!!!! The production I just saw didn't have fake blood, either. I need that in my life! I once saw King Lear live and they very convincingly depicted his eyes being gouged out, so I know they can do it.
More people on the stage. As you stated, sometimes there just needs to be more people to complete the atmosphere! And also, to me one of the joys of live theatre is when there are so many little details happening onstage that you never run out of places to look. There are also some scenes in Sweeney Todd that I think can be confusing if you don't have enough players or set pieces (e.g. Toby in the cellar during Parlor Songs, Judge Turpin's party/Lucy flashback, City on Fire). I think it has already been confirmed that there will be a large cast so I'm looking forward to this. :)
Idk how but I hope that the staging of "The Letter" is really creepy and innovative. That's one of my favorite underrated moments!
This made me think about it a little more so thanks for asking!! It's kind of hard to speculate right now because there is so little new info to work with, but hopefully that will change soon.

The Hydraulic Dogs - "Shake It for Me" Turbo Sampler (Vol. 2) 2000 House
Plays: N/A on Spotify // 80 on YouTube
Boy, do I have an absolute fuckin' underrated y2k-era banger for you all today. I really have no idea how the UK house music duo of Hydraulic Dogs ever first came about, but let's just say that it was definitely a good idea for these two guys to team up. Dominic Dawson aka DJD had been a veteran house DJ and producer since the 80s and Jonny Delafons aka L B Dope was a drummer for country-blues-acid house-trip hop band Alabama 3 (A3 in the States), whose biggest claim to fame would undoubtedly become "Woke Up This Morning," which would go on to serve as the theme song to The Sopranos.
But in the year 2000, with what seemed to be something of a side project for both of these blokes, Dawson and Delafons released their first single together, a funky piece of filtery and bonging house music called "Shake It for Me," which on top of a pretty standard four-on-the-floor house backbeat that added some hand drumming, incorporated samples from two extremely popular songs:
One, "(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty," by KC & The Sunshine Band,
youtube
And two, "California Love," by 2Pac, Dr. Dre, & Roger Troutman from 80s electro-funk band Zapp.
youtube
Released on UK label Influence—a sublabel of UK label Defender—"Shake It for Me" would find its way onto a small handful of mixes in 2000, including two that were released by the biblical UK electronic music monthly, Mixmag, but another mix the song ended up on was DJ Laflèche's Montreal Mix, which was put out on the Montreal-based Turbo Recordings label; and because of the song's inclusion on that mix, a fuller-length version of it also appeared on a Turbo sampler that year too, even though Turbo never actually released the song themselves.
Anyway, "Shake It for Me" is pure gold, man. The samples it employs are obviously not obscure by any means, but the idea of marrying the opening moments of "Shake Your Booty" to some of Roger Troutman's own talk-box vocals from "California Love" really ends up generating a track that, to this day, still feels fit for unleashing in pretty much any party setting. And when Dawson and Delafons kill the Troutman loop(s) in order to instead let his voice wander freely and way offbeat, those are the times when this song reaches its most satisfying points 😌.
So if you adore "California Love," it's probably best that you give this house jam from the early 2000s a listen too, 'cuz you're probably gonna end up digging how this British pair implemented it for their own tune as well.
A 2002 single put out on UK Sony sublabel Direction would feature remixes of "Shake It for Me" by Italy's Junior Jack and the UK's TBC (Matt Schwartz), and it would end up charting successfully, reaching #56 on the UK Singles chart and #2 on the UK Dance Singles chart. The Hydraulic Dogs would also end up releasing a handful of more singles between '02 and '03—mostly promos—a digital single in '08, and they'd also do some remixes too, including a couple for Alabama 3, and another one in 2012 for Orbital's "New France," which featured Zola Jesus on it. And that Orbital remix appears to be the last time that we'd ever hear from them as a pair.
But their debut sure was a nice gem!

22 Favorite Albums of 2022
Hey music friends and random strangers. Welcome back to my annual music blog where I go through my favorite albums released in 2022.
I hope 2022 has treated you all well, and if it hasn't, congratulations on surviving it and I hope you have a better 2023.
I'm still listening to tons of new music and sharing it with anyone who cares to listen. I will say that this years top 10 is probably the most white male dominated indie schmindie top 10 ever, but I don't make apologies for that, the heart loves what the heart loves! There's slightly more diversity in the rest of the chart but at the end of the day i'm an indie sleaze boy and 2022 has been the sleaziest of indie!
Lets start with albums #22-#11 as a list and then we'll get into the top 10 in more detail, all these I've enjoyed, and have tracks on them I've played loads but maybe not stuck with the entire album as long.
22. Lizzo - Special
21. Fontaines DC - Skinty Fia
20. Ezra Furman - All of us Flames
19. Marian Hill - Why cant we just pretend?
18. Bloc Party - Alpha Games
17. Dune Rats - Real Rare Whale
16. The Chats - Get Fucked
15. Black Country, New Road - Ants from up there
14. Loyle Carner - Hugo
13. The Linda Linda's - Growing Up
12. Yeah Yeah Yeah's - Cool it Down
11. Viagra Boys - Cave World
10. Spoon - Lucifer on the Sofa
It's testament to Spoon's quality that even on their 10th studio album they're still writing songs as great as Wild and the Hardest Cut. The former was my most played song of the year.
youtube
9. The Bug Club - Green Dream in F#
The first of four debut albums in my top 10 showing the health of indie-rock in 2022. It may not be the most popular genre right now but the scene definitely is in somewhat of a renaissance. Bug Club are a Welsh 3 piece and sound like a mixture of Pavement, Los Campesinos and Belle and Sebastian. They write melodic, funny, lo-fi indie 3 minute pop songs and I urge you to check them out.
youtube
8. Alt-J - The Dream
10 years since the release of An Awesome Wave propelled them to hipster stardom I was happily surprised by this release, its the album i've turned to most when I needed to chill out. The first half of this LP is as good as anything they've ever done, it peters out a bit in the 2nd half but still worth a listen all the way through.
youtube
7. Mary Shelley - Look at You
New NYC band Mary Shelley blew me away at this years New Colossus festival. They look like long island frat brothers but sound like an 80's post punk band twice their age. A brilliant live band with some fantastic tunes and the below is one of my favorites of the year.
youtube
6. Jack White - Fear of the Dawn
Two albums from Ol' Jacky White this year, Fear of the Dawn was my hands down favorite, as good as latter day White Stripes. Really heavy, full of riffs and just great fun.
youtube
5. Wet Leg - Wet Leg
After the viral hit of 2021 - Chaise Longue, I don't think anyone expected Wet Leg to have a full album of similar quality catchy tunes. But surprisingly they did, and they backed up their viral smash with a string of great singles and an album which hinted at a lot more depth than what you might have first thought.
youtube
4. Yard Act - The Overload
Must be one of the hardest working bands of the year, so many gigs, so many achievements. I immediately fell in love with Yard Act last year after their brilliant debut singles Fixer Upper and Dark Days but was mortified to see that neither of those made the album. What on earth were they thinking?! Apparently they didn't fit the narrative arc, and they're artists, y'know? Anyway, I needn't be worried the album is brilliant, the aforementioned arc is genius, the writing is sublime, the hooks are big, there's emotion, humor, satire and tunes coming out their arse.
youtube
3. Everything Everything - Raw Data Feel
EE continue to be Englands most underrated band, maybe they're just too weird for the mainstream, but on their 6th album they continue to push the boundaries of what it means to be a pop band. For this record they used AI to generate some lyrics, apparently feeding the robot posts from 4Chan, verses from Beowulf and other weird things, but they may as well have just fed it all their previous work because it still sounds as bonkers as everything else they'd previously released.
youtube
2. Bodega - Broken Equipment
Similarly to the AI algorithm used above it feels like Bodega have been fed an audio diet of every New York band for the past 50 years as an experiment to see what comes out of it. The result is a classic NYC rock record that swings from The Ramones to more modern contemporaries like LCD Soundsystem and Parquet Courts. The lyrics are smart the songs are catchy and there's barely any filler on this fantastic second album.
youtube
1. Sports Team - Gulp!
All hail the new kings of Britpop! I think Sports Team are the closest thing to Blur we have, outside of Blur themselves. They remind me of Great Escape / Parklife era Blur where they're cocky, chaotic but at their most creative and mainstream. Gulp! was apparently a tricky record to make for the band, but it doesn't sound that way. It's a balls out, self assured romp of a record that barely lets up from start to finish. By far my most listened to band of 2022 and it's positivity has helped me so much through a difficult year.
youtube
There we have it! Thanks so much for reading and listening, I hope you've found a new love or gone back to a band you may have skipped over this year. Send me your comments, I always love to hear from friends to see what they thought and what they agree / disagree with.
Want a handy playlist featuring songs from all of my top 22? Here you go.

can i ask about amarant coral? the monk in red himself~
Can you ask about Amarant Coral? *cracks fingers* Oh I insist that you do. Welcome to my Amarant Appreciation Post:
Tumblr media
favorite thing about them: First off best thing about Amarant? His theme. The percussion and the guitar. It’s great and it captures him so well. People out here like “take Amarant out of the game he adds nothing.” EXCUSE ME? You remove the Amarant you remove the Amarant Theme my friend and that is something I do NOT vibe with.
least favorite thing about them: I wanna know more about him. Now Amarant doesn’t need a backstory or history in the game. In a sense, he already has one that connects him to Zidane and explains his motives and actions and eventual arc. But my issue is, Square never gave him anything else. If you look at Ultimania there’s additional lore about other characters, like Steiner for instance. You learn Steiner was a war orphan who was saved by the Pluto Knights - explaining his devotion to them. Amarant though? Square was like “uh... yeah he was born....? And then he uh got famous...? Idk then he met Zidane. You figure it out.” Square. I hate you. 18 years from his birth until he became “well known”. WHAT WAS HE DOING. WHY’D HE BECOME A SECURITY GUARD. WHAT WAS ON HIS RESUME. TELL MEEEE. Like, okay, what the actual in-game canon gives us on Amarant is sort of enough. He’s a purposely written mysterious “cool-guy” character so we’re given scraps to make him unknown but come on. In the published after-game canon, like Ultimania, we could have been given a bit more. He says he doesn’t remember anything about his origins or parents, but why. Was he another victim of Gaia’s wars? Probably. Was he born on a battlefield? Fighting for his life, living without comrades, taking scraps whenever he could? Was he betrayed when he was young? Is he a supposed to be a version of Zidane had he not been adopted into Tantalus by Baku??? These are questions I deserve answers to, Square.
favorite line: “’I can't just walk away. It goes against my nature...’ You're a real simpleton. Forget it, guys. There's no stopping this fool." I love this. Amarant figures Zidane out pretty quickly after Ipsen’s Castle. Zidane is hardheaded and also an actor. He acts cool and pretends his reasons for doing things are loose but when he’s decided something it’s always for a reason. You don’t need a reason to help people, but Zidane has his reasons for helping Kuja and while Amarant doesn’t give two shits what they are he knows Zidane won’t be stopped because, despite everything, Zidane saved a loser like him. Also this line “Tell me! Why didn't you kill me!?" Because I quote it all the time and it makes myself laugh. Amarant is such a drama queen and Zidane knows it. Zidane’s like “dude... what is your damage, it’s 5 pm on Tuesday in Madain Sari. I ain’t getting blood on my gloves cause you’re having a temper tantrum.” And then Amarant runs away to have an existential crisis. He’s 26 but compared to Zidane, he’s the real teenager with angst.
brOTP: I could talk about Zidane or Freya with Amarant but instead I’m gonna say the underrated dynamic of Amarant and Eiko (and also Vivi).  Amarant with the kids is truly the greatest gift given by his presence in the game. Amarant has never known true suffering until he became a designated legal guardian of a group of minors. It also kills me how he’s the one to volunteer to carry Eiko and Vivi up the Iifa tree. He looks at Zidane and is like “you have seriously been the ‘adult’ of this group???”

OTP: Gotta say the Freya and Amarant dynamic. I really enjoyed their unlikely friendship in the game but then the content. The fan content. The Freya x Amarant fans out there, you win. Ya got me. You captured me and I am now imprisoned by their banter and begruntled allies to lovers story. Even if they’re not romantic I love them together and really wish the game gave us more of them. But even Lani and Amarant together are valid, though I prefer them as butting head bros. Not much content for my girl Lani out there either, she deserves more.
nOTP: Nothing I can think of. I tend to like platonic pairings for Amarant. The dude needs friends because he can barely define the word friendship.
random headcanon: Before Zidane returns at the end of the game Amarant wanders around a bit, unsure of what to do. He doesn’t feel any place with the others in Alexandria, Burmecia, or Lindblum. I imagine he goes off on his own for a bit like before but this time he’s not after Zidane or a fight. Instead he’s got no particular destination. Yet he somehow always finds himself running into people just like him - or the old him - friendless lonely people who are looking for a fight. He doesn’t go out his way to find these folks he simply runs into them and decides he might as well knock some sense into them. He does however make it his business to go after any murmur of people hatching any ideas of going after the far off little village on the Lost Continent. The home of the genomes and black mages. They were so helpless, so weak that anyone who’d want to mess with them is pathetic in Amarant’s book. Until Zidane returns, no one has the chance to even look at the Black Mage Village the wrong way because in the shadows Amarant lurks, making damn well sure of that.
unpopular opinion: I kinda love that he’s just there for most of the game? While I agree he gets the short end of the stick in the same way as Freya, not receiving additional individual character spotlight (which could have very well been supplied through discoverable lore in the world/npcs or through sidequests) I never considered his “standing off to the side” as a detriment to his character.
Many would probably agree that Amarant always felt like a bit of a parody of the loner character, or at least the stereotype of the loner character. Amarant is so easily paralleled with Squall and Cloud’s surface-level attitudes because his dialogue always felt like something to poke fun at. As the player we’re supposed to align with Zidane’s way of thinking and how he views Amarant. When Amarant loses to Zidane and pretty much grits his teeth and goes “KILL ME,” along with Zidane we’re supposed to kinda raise our brow at him and go “...really, dude?”
Amarant’s a character introduced as an antagonist who has more in common with the power hungry villains of the game. Like many of the characters in FFIX, Amarant is in search of purpose in life, which he has never found, because he was always looking in the wrong places - in places of violence and power. Very toxic-masculinity of him. Amarant is “cool” on an aesthetic level but in reality he’s the polar opposite of cool in terms of what FFIX states about the need for others to be intertwined in your experiences so that you can live a full life.
I sort of love that he’s like a grumpy pitball following a 16 year old and his friends around. Then he sits in the corner when they all meet up and discuss current events acting like he doesn’t care (not to mention he casually walks as everyone is running as fast as they can to escape Terra - made me laugh cry on my first playthrough) He is “just there” but that’s because he has no where else to be, no where else to go, he’s a man without a home. And until Zidane offers his hand, at the point where Amarant is most willing to take it at Ipsen’s Castle, he’s not truly a party member. He IS an outsider for almost the entire game but at Ipsen Castle he joins the party, becomes a comrade, and decides he’ll allow himself to change paths and start a life where he has friends and lives, as well as fights for them. Which is why after that moment, Amarant finally has a victory pose.
song i associate with them: I was scratching my head for so long trying to think of a song or track that had Amarant vibes until it hit me. Outskirt Stand by Tsukasa Tawada (from Pokemon Colosseum). Amarant is so chill, he’s not a bombastic guy, so he needs a theme that drops me in the rocky open desert of the Lost Continent like I’m just lumbering around looking for a monkey-tailed menace. Some other Amarant tunes:  Pyrite Town, The Under, Snagem Hideout tracks from Pokemon Colosseum. This post is just an elaborate call to action for everyone to listen to the Pokemon Colosseum soundtrack. Tsukasa Tawada is so great and he has a YouTube. Check him out.
favorite picture of them:
Yoshitaka Amano’s Salamander Coral. I love him. He had too much power.

Also everything drawn by @crispy-ghee. Everything. I will think of this Comic forever until I die. Tattoo it on my flesh. The banter, the dynamics, the post-game content, the Zidane prince-consort outfit, the new Amarant outfit, the stuck-in-the-same-place relationship him and Freya have. Perfect. Go read it and consume Crisipy’s stuff. And also check them and their current art out, they just consistently get better and better. Here’s a first panel preview of my fav comic. Read it.

@hannahlady‘s Amarant art and their Freya/Amarant art is just ugh. *Chef’s Kiss* Here is another preview because you should go look at it.

Here’s a piece that deserves so much more love by @snackage. I LOVE how they drew Amarant. Here’s a little preview. It’s SO GOOD

Anyway TL;DR: Amarant is love and life and you’ll have to pull him from my little gremlin hands.
