Talking as players outside the game is an incredibly important part of having good PC/PC D&D relationships, and obviously the characters involved in the relationship talking to each other in meaningful ways is crucial, but I think the importance of talking in-game in depth to other people is really underrated, in that it not only tells the other player what your character is feeling without having to reveal it in-game to them, but also serves to engage other characters in the story and deepen those platonic bonds to the point where they might even serve as confidants or wingmen. To give a bunch of examples and what they achieved:
Vax telling Gilmore he didn't want to string him along made it clear out of game that his feelings towards Keyleth were his priority, even though it happened where the other characters were not able to hear.
Similarly, Vex giving her blessing eventually after her initial resistance signaled to Liam that this would not be a major break between the twins.
Vax asking Vex what she intended to do about her feelings for Percy served not only as an opportunity for her to voice them to someone; it also serves as a big green light for Taliesin as Percy to kiss Vex later that episode (which he had already from Vex's resurrection ritual, but it underscores it).
Pike talking about Scanlan with Keyleth and Vex allows her to make it clear that she does ultimately like a lot of things about him despite sometimes being annoyed, and her talking to him through her earring while Scanlan is very much not there but Sam is at the table also serves as this kind of green light.
Jester asking Veth about kissing in relationship to Fjord lets Travis know where Jester is at and invests Veth in-game in the relationship.
Caleb asking Jester if she's "sweet on [Fjord]" lets her openly reassess her feelings after an intense arc and also indicates in-game that Caleb has noticed.
Beau waiting to hear the sound of thunder signals to Ashley (who was not at the table but who was presumably staying updated on events) that Beau has feelings for Yasha; it also allows those playing Yasha (often Matt for pure RP and Travis in combat) to return that flirting, since the baseline was already established.
Possibly the most obvious example, but Beau and Fjord's conversation on Rumblecusp not only clarifies to the whole table where everyone is (opening the door, for example, for the scenes in the beer garden a few episodes later of Caleb having Fjord and Jester dance together and Caduceus encouraging Yasha to pursue Beau) but very much serves as a green light to Ashley and Laura respectively. This is then mirrored by them talking after Beau has asked Yasha on a date and Fjord and Jester have kissed, and everyone involved can "debrief" with their partners not present in-game.
As mentioned, this is mostly about PC/PC relationships because PC/NPC is an inherently different dynamic mechanically though still should be a conversation, but Veth describing Yeza and Jester asking Caleb about his feelings about Essek both give Matt clues for playing these NPCs and how things might be received.
FRIDA mentioning their crush on FCG to Deanna means it's not a complete surprise to Sam, since it is a very sudden relationship, and lets him prepare and decide how FCG would feel in the moment, and also establishes how Deanna will feel about it.
Similarly in the C3 Uthodurn arc, Fearne going to Chetney about Deanna is an incredibly good move from Ashley (to the point that talking about this is what led me to write this whole post). It lets Travis play out where Chetney is. It lets Aabria therefore hear not only where Chetney is, but also know that Fearne is potentially interested. It establishes a ton of the dynamics for a relationship that out of game everyone knows will not have a full campaign to play out since one of the characters involved is a guest. And finally, it signals to Christian as FRIDA what the situation is in case Deanna confides in them.

Finished! Oh man, this took me... two months? Three? So long. But the idea wouldn’t let go, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
As I mentioned before I watched bits and pieces of the 1st campaign of Critical Role before going back to the beginning and watching/listening to seriously (I’m now starting episode 74!), but one thing that struck me was the character growth for all these characters?? So good. And these two... oh, these two. I started thinking I wanted them together any way, romantic or platonic (about... 6% of my ships are romantic?), but as time goes by I just love this ship, where it started and where it ends up in the epilogue. Plus... y’now, a couple of slightly bruised souls finding solace in each other 💜
I remember a fic that covers part of Scanlan’s year and a half away in which he gets... self-conscious? (understatement) about his death scars, if only because, well. They have to take up a lot of space on his body, considering what happens to him in “The Deceiver’s Stand”. (I have this headcanon that the scars from wounds that cause death don’t really fade like other scars do. So what these two have gone through left a hell of a mark. Physically, too. Pike knows a lot about scars, the forms they can take, and the weight they can have. And I wanted to explore her side of things from her own passing through death and resurrection.)
Another headcanon I have is that, once the dust has settled and they have to consider mundane things like immediate lodgings and stuff, Scanlan is the only one who doesn’t have anywhere to go back to: Vex and Percy have Whitestone, Keyleth has Zephrah, Pike and Grog have Wilhand’s house in Westruun... which has an attic that could double as a guest room with many a few repairs. It probably looks way too cosy and tidy for what I thought I’d do, but chalk it up to my inability to really clutter a room (unlike irl) 😅 The little frame behind Scanlan isn’t a random castle, by the way, it’s supposed to be Greyskull Keep. Wonder what happened to the place after the end...
Anyway. It’s 11:30PM and I should be in bed, so I’m posting this and hope you like!

Hiii I wanted to ask for the vox machina characters and how they treat you during your first time like percy, scanlan and grog
No problem Anon! I really missed Vox Machina, really happy that they're back.
Pairing: Percy de Rolo, Scanlan Shorthalt, Grog Strongjaw x Fem!Reader
Tags: nsfw, smut, first time, virginity loss, blowjob, fingering, size difference, cunnilingus, inexperienced Reader
A/N: I can't wait for more pain, er I mean more adventures the the VM go on. Also I would have put pictures here but for some reason Tumblr is putting them all below each other not next to each other when I click post.
PERCY
Percy makes it romantic for you, literally sweeping you off your feet and laying you down on the bed
He takes his sweet time taking your clothes off, making you feel cherished and memorizing your features and the reactions you give him
He holds one of your hands no matter what he's doing with the other, weather it be fingering you, rubbing your clit or jerking himself off
Pays special attention to your clit when he's going down on you and only puts his cock in when you're still in the height of you orgasm, that way he knows you're wet enough for it to slide in with no issue
Makes it clear that he doesn't care how many things you can do for him right now, there's a learning curve to these things, he can show you the things he knows, and what you don't know you can discover together
It doesn't matter to him if you come more then he does, this is about you after all, you have plenty of time to even out the score
SCANLAN
Scanlan may be a willing to have sex with anyone who looks his way but he knows how nervous people can get when it's their first time
He wants to treat you, make sure that your first time is one that you'll remember forever
He won't be making fun of how you don't know certain things although his will talk a lot about his own experience and what he would like to try with you
No surprise that he can make you come just with his mouth and fingers
Very patient with you despite how damn hard his dick gets from watching you come
The good thing is that because he's not that big it's not painful for you at all and that he doesn't need to hold back a lot once his dick is inside
GROG
Grog doesn't have much experience with virgins so he's just as nervous about it as you, which is cute to see from someone of his stature
One thing that he does know, and that is pretty much the same with everyone he has sex with, is that he needs to prepare you properly before putting his cock in or else he could hurt you
He loves getting blowjobs from you, especially when you're lying on the bed, sideways to him so he can reach over and finger your pussy at the same time
Seeing you shaking from your orgasm is adorable to him, don't worry you'll get used to them soon enough, as powerful as they may be
Warns you beforehand that he has a lot of cum for you and that you don't need to be able to take it all on your first try, same goes for his cock
Let's you sit on top of him so you can take him in at your own pace, at his size it's always the best option if someone's taking him for the first time

this is literally all i could think about on my drive to work today so i present to you
what cars would vox machina drive?
keyleth: you know she's a subaru girlie, olive green and dented (bc lbr keyleth would not be the best driver) and covered in just ALLLL the bumper stickers, for state parks and liberal politicians from like two decades ago and charities she doesn't even remember donating to (she has three different "who saved who?" bumper stickers and she doesn't know how she got any of them). there's a rattle that starts whenever she gets over 40 mph but she's choosing to ignore it.
percy: this is an old money bitch so you know he has a bunch of cars, mercedes and aston martins and bentleys, but i think his go-to is a brick of a rolls royce, dark gray bc black is too obvious
vax: an olllllllld black thunderbird that is absolutely falling apart, just a complete hazard to have on the roads, but vax pours any excess dollar he has into keeping the piece of shit running bc he loves it so much
vex: a sensible, clean honda civic sport (blue) that has every single bell and whistle offered but that she negotiated down to $10k below the sticker price. she will drive this thing into the fucking ground before she gets a new one. the back seat has a special protector/sling thing for trinket.
pike: just the most absolute unit of a gargantuan pick-up truck you can imagine. something that no self-respecting construction professional would even drive, just so fucking mammoth that the TIRES are taller than pike. she has special electric stairs that descend so she can get in. she has this because a) she is a monster and she deserves it and b)
grog failed his driver's test (both written and practical) six times before just giving up, so he just goes wherever pike goes
scanlan: a tricked-out cadillac he had specially painted the most gnarly shade of purple with sparkling gold rims and LED lights along the undercarriage that are linked to his illegal stereo that he is always bumping way too loud with the windows down. just a fucking pimpmobile of a vehicle. leather seats that you do NOT want to look at under a black light and special hidden compartments for the contraband he insists he has but absolutely does not.
tary: this twunk drives a gold porsche 911, and he hates giving his friends rides when they need one but when he does, he makes them take their shoes off. do NOT ask him for the aux, it is a waste of your time. he is an insanely reckless driver, and once he finally wrecks the porsche for good, he's shocked to learn how much they cost (this one was a gift), so vex drags him kicking and screaming to honda to get him a civic of his own (not as nice as hers bc without daddy's money he definitely can't afford it).

I feel like one of the reasons that the Bells Hells are so interesting and compelling to me is that they’re all so angry. Anger is so interesting to me because of its volatility. The way it can, more than any other emotion, be twisted. Think of how much more volatile Percy was in campaign one because of his revenge boner than Caleb in campaign two with his deepset guilt and grief.
And like, sure, we had anger before in the other campaigns.
Like Percy was super angry obviously, and Vex had her rage, and Scanlan had his moment (what’s my mother’s name) in Campaign one, and you could probably pull moments for the rest of Vox Machina. Grog’s a barbarian, he rages all the time. Plus with his herd. Okay, sure. Vax certainly had his moments. Keyleth at Raishan. (I don’t think Pike realy had any real anger moments in her arc.) But their stories don’t rely on their anger as much as Percy and Vex, and not nearly as much as Bells Hells.
In the Mighty Nein, there’s Beau who is super angry at the world, justifiably so, but the rest of the party not so much. Caleb and Yasha are guilt and grief. Cad’s faith. Jester definitely had her problems with emotion, but anger wasn’t really part of it so much as learning to let herself feel something other than happy. Fjord’s journey to Melora was much more about introspection, Veth’s journey back to herself was certainly emotionally taxing for her, but it’s back to greif and loss for her. Kingsley is all about discovery, and Essek was about finding friendship.
But Bells Hells. They’re all so angry. With maybe the exception of Chetney, but he’s also a werewolf which is its own sort of instability.
Ashton’s a given---Tal’s so good at anger in his characters. Perfect punk, angry at the world, angry at their situation. *chef’s kiss* perfect barbarian
Imogen has such rage bubbling. “We’re gonna sunder you, Delilah Briarwood” for one, but also, with her mother. With her powers.
Fearne with her parents. The way she was discovering her anger had so much potential, and I really wanted to see her actually throw some fireballs or something.
Orym. I saw the look on Liam’s face when he had that insight check whisper from Tuldus. Dude, Otohan and the Ruby Vanguard killed his husband and his dad (I know, father in law, but Orym says dad.) He’s the nice one, he’s said it before himself, but... under the surface, i think he’s got some rage in him.
FCG. Oh, FCG, with their unpredictable rage mode. Trying so desperately to be the caretaker when they don’t even know what they are. The professor in Yios gave him a lot of good information, but there’s a lot they don’t know.
For me, with FCG and Orym both, it’s a lot of aren’t you tired of being nice? Don’t you want to go apeshit?
And then Laudna. Laudna, with the most to be angry about. She was murdered by the Briarwoods, and spent the next thirty years with her murderer in her head. Looking like a corpse. Not knowing if she was dead or alive. Being chased out of towns all over Tal’Dorei until she ran all the way to Marquet. No friends, even before she died, before Imogen. And she’s really the most interesting to me. Because we don’t see a lot of rage with her. Even with Percy in Whitestone, it’s forgiveness. It’s understanding. The only time I remember in the campaign her really being angry was when FCG turned on the party that time, and that was related to Delilah’s manipulations.
Orym said once something like she had the worst thing out of all of them happen, and yet she’s the happiest, and how is that? And she goes, well, because the worst thing that’s happened to me already happened.
And it’s so interesting to me because we could, in another universe, have another Ashton in Laudna. Because, really, very similar things happened to them. Both died. Both put back together not quite right, not quite in control of their situation. Feared, even.
But she’s so loving, caring, and not wrathful, and honestly, I’d kind of love to see some anger from her. And I think we might see it if Imogen gets hurt.
Anyway i’m unhinged about bells hells. I love vox machina and mighty nein but I’ve connected most to bells hells because I’ve been watching CR since CR3 started, and I love my angy bois.

Hey, I find your takes on the current cr god discourse really interesting. Did you have anymore where that comes from?
Mostly that I'm tired of the smugness of certain fans. Even the people who aren't immediately telling Orym to get over his dead husband already have a tone of like, "well of course the poor dear can't look at it objectively, but let's not worry; it'll be so hard for him, but he'll see things our way soon enough and hate the gods too".
(And seriously, no one has any examples of why Pelor needs to be "humbled" in a way the other gods don't. What'd he do, other than not suck off your blorbo?)
On a more serious gripe: as others have said, no one who brings up the "b-but the gods ARE colonizers!" rhetoric has any kind of real solution to it. Do Kima, Vex, Scanlan, Pike, Wilhand, Fjord, Caduceus, FCG, and Deanna all need to be brought to court for aiding and abetting "colonizers"? The Ashari are the legacy of the Gau Drashari, who were tasked with keeping out the Primordials, and the guarding of the elemental rifts serves a similar function; are Keyleth, Korrin, Cerkonos, and Orym going to atone for the druids also perpetuating "colonialism"? Do we need to retroactively condemn the Ring of Brass, seeing as how they actually destroyed two Primordials in an effort to keep them from returning to the world?
What does justice look like here, exactly? Returning Exandria to the Primordials and elementals by unleashing Predathos on the gods? Except Predathos wants to eat Primordials too, so that'll end in a hurry, and if this is accomplished without Predathos, the Primordials destroy all the mortals like they've wanted to for eons and Critical Role ends with all our favorite characters dead and the company itself barely viable anymore. Get rid of the gods without returning the world to the Primordials? Well, now not only are you still perpetuating "colonialism", you've also got thousands if not millions of people (see above and et cetera) who will lose connections to beings that they love that helped them and brought them spiritual fulfillment—and there will be quite a few people serving gods who aren't nearly as good-natured as the Dawnfather or the Platinum Dragon who aren't going to be pleased at their passing and are absolutely going to find someone to take it out on. (Arkhan "stole the hand of Vecna" the Cruel was a pretty loyal servant of Tiamat, after all.) You're also losing access to quite a bit of medical care, since clerics are the ones who do most of that work, and while druids and bards could fill some of the gaps, I don't think we're exactly short on real-life examples of what happens when a society overextends its healthcare capacity. What's anyone in this scenario supposed to do?
Like, if the metaphor isn't actionable, it's a stupid fuckin' metaphor.

Heyy!! So lately I've been in a very domestic, fluffy feel. SOOO NOW IM PROJECTING THAT onto this request rq teehee. I was wanting to do one for Percy, with season two out I missed the angsty gunslinger on screen. Set after the campaign, maybe during winter's crest? As of you and Percy coming back to whitestone for the occasion, its decided to round up all of Vox Machina. For a night of fun amongst friends, with a whole lot of ale to go around and stories to tell. Percy seems distant lately, staying more to his workshop and genuinely his own tasks. Not like his workshop isn't already a second room, it's just ODD to say the least. As the day rolls around, everyone starts to arrive at whitestones castle. With happy greetings and laughs, that night's activities begin. To sum it up , Percy proposes to reader. Thinking it would be a nice gesture to pull. Also cause I know this extra bitch would make a ring for you. I know it sounds cheesy but like hear me outtt!! The moment just sounded so sweet to me and I NEEDED to send this in. I'm a sucker for this cute content <3 Byeee Saph!!! :D
A proposal you asked for, a proposal you'll get. Fluff and cheese and all of the things. Sorry for the wait but I hop the 3.6k word count made up for it. Hope you enjoy and thanks for requesting! 😘
“I’ll be right with you, dear!” He’s spoken and shouted those words over the noise of his ongoing projects far too many times. Percy feels somewhat guilty for all but banishing you from his workshop and hiding this one secret project of his. He’s been so caught up in it; it has to be perfect after all. But that did mean he couldn’t spend as much time with you and his mind is elsewhere whenever he does leave his workshop. He’s seen your accepting but sad smiles whenever he wanders off. His heart hurts when he finishes late and you’re already in bed, asleep and alone curled up on your side because he missed yet another dinner. It’s reached the point where he’s been considering just spilling he beans. He doesn’t want to hurt you over some stupid secret but you’re so damn understanding and accepting. Of course you’re disappointed when he does join you for a meal and he informs you he has errands to run and won’t be back until late. You’d simply give him a kiss and wish him good luck. He’s barely seen you outside of your overlapping responsibilities. He just feels bad. But then there’s a breakthrough!
The door to his workshop slams open, or rather off its hinges entirely. Now very few people are able to break a deadbolted several inch thick heavy steel door clean off its hinges and that immediately signals him; it’s not you at that door. Given the shadow that all but blocks the light from entering He knows enough. He’s all but grabbed by the shoulders and lifted from his seat and can barely settle his things before he’s dragged out of his workshop.
“Come on Percy, you’re not going to let us have all the fun, are you?” Scanlan speaks in a sing-song voice when he’s pushed into the hallway and sees the gnome casually leaning against the wall like the arsehole he is.
“I was perfectly content finishing my work instead.” He counters but Scanlan wouldn’t have it.
“We’re having a night out, like old times! Let’s drink dry a tavern! Start some fights!” The gnome tries to persuade him and while anything coming out of Scanlan’s mouth should always be questioned, He can’t help but long for some normalcy. No matter how much he might pretend to hate the ruckus his friends cause which inevitably ended with them getting kicked out of the establishment, district or even city, he likes it and misses it. And before he know it he’s spiralling in memories of you, covering his back while he tries to fight off that minotaur barkeep, and the time where you smashed that stein in pieces thug’s head. He also thinks of the conversations you’ve had, the things you learned about each other, and the sometimes drunken ramblings where your questionable theories actually hold some weight. He misses it all. He misses the glint in your eye right before you’re about to absolutely decimate some card players. He misses your laughter at Keyleth’s horrible jokes, and your caring side when she has a little too much. He misses your little battles of charm with Vex as the two of you attempt to have the group drink for free and negate the expense of the damages done to the establishment or people.
Percy is so caught in his mind that he automatically walks with when Scanlan and Grog begin to move. He doesn’t even put up a fight. He’ll have this one night. He’ll enjoy it. Then he realises how bloody stupid he is.
“Excuse me. I’ll meet you there.” He turns on his heels but comes face to face with Grog’s chest.
“Nuh-uh! Pike said she won’t let us have any ale if we don’t bring you back.” Grog pouts at the thought of being refused ale. No surprise there.
“And what’s your motive?” Percy wonders out loud. He already knows the answer and Scanlan just raises an eyebrow implying the same.
“You really wanna know?”
“Point taken.” Percy shakes his head, takes a step back from Grog but that doesn’t mean he’s not craning his neck to stare up at him. “If you have to come along, be my guest. I just need to get something from my workshop. That is all.” Scanlan shrugs at Grog. Grog shrugs back. Scanlan shrugs again. So does Grog. Percy’s already sick of this so he just starts walking and they follow whispering not so inconspicuously. He still choses to block him out.
Once back at the workshop he engages the safety door; not ideal but at least it wards off snoopers. He walks over to his work bench, sits down and pulls open one of the drawers under it. He pulls out two bands of precious metal, notices they’re a bit dirty and quickly cleans them with a rag. He sees Scanlan peeking around the corner. The gnome knows not to enter his workshop but Grog has no such reservations, not even when he tried to ingest some very caustic materials.
“Ooh! What are those for?” Grog exclaims trying to peak over his shoulder.
“What? What is it Grog? Get out of the way I can’t see. Ugh.” Scanlan tries to look around the goliath blocking his view right now.
“Nothing concerning you.” Percy replies but Grog talks over him.
“They’re fancy rings. Super shiny.” He says and Percy just sighs, pockets the set of rings and gets up walking around Grog and back towards the doorway.
“You’ve been making some jewelled cock rings or something? I might have a commission for ya. Something with diamonds-“ Scanlan keeps going but Percy tunes him out. He’s had plenty of time to practice ignoring the bard after all. They continue their journey to the tavern Vox Machina had chosen.
The Tavern is already lively with people and music by the time they enter. The rest of Vox Machina had already taken up a table and safeguarded it from any thieves with death stares for those who didn’t recognise them. They’d already started dwindling the top shelf by the looks of it. You’re leaning your elbow on the back of Vex’ chair as she plays a game with Keyleth. You point at a card but in doing so, with some sleight of hand exchange it for Vex to gain the better hand. You haven’t noticed him yet, or so it seems. So Percy casually walks up beside you, lets his hand drift to your back to draw your attention and when you look over your shoulder, whatever words he wanted to say, fall completely silent. His lips part but no words leave. You chuckle and rise fully, brush your fingers along his arm and press your lips to his in a greeting.
“Hello to you too.” You grin when you pull back and Percy’s somewhat come to his senses. You pass some coins to Vex who takes them with a ‘thank you, darling’ and keeps playing her card game with the druid.
“What was that for?”
“Well, I may or may not have lost a bet.” You lace your fingers with his and pull him along to the abandoned seats only to see yours has been dragged off to another table. You have half the mind to demand it back but haven’t had nearly enough to drink to start a tavern brawl this early into the night, so you just push Percy to sit in the remaining empty chair and sit yourself down across his lap.
“Do elaborate.” His arm wraps around your waist as you lean over the table to grab the bottle of wine and an empt glass. You pour a drink and hand it to him while Pike slides over your own glass and you wink a thanks. She raises her cup.
“Vex said you’d walk through the door willingly because you didn’t want to make a fool of yourself. I said Grog would drag you by the back of your coat while Scanlan loudly announced our esteemed presence to this good folk in song.” He gives you a disapproving look. You hide your smile behind your glass. “Oh please, not as if it would have been unlikely.” The look fades very slowly as it only puts more truth to your statement. Were it any other situation he might have been the victim of just such a scene.
“I don’t get it! Why do you always keep winning?” Keyleth hiccups and Pike and you share a look as the cleric quickly takes Keyleth’s cup, downs it, and fills it with water before putting it back in its previous place. You exchange a nod.
“That’s because she’s cheating.” Vex might as well have shot him then and there given the look Percy receives at his comment.
“Are you calling me a cheater, Percy?” Her eyes narrow leading you to interpose yourself between the two; an easily achieved feat given you’re in his lap. You tap his arm, telling him to let it go.
“I’m merely saying you apply different rules to the game than commonly accepted.”
“I knew Vex wasn’t cheating.” Grog mumbles but gets his bubble burst pretty quickly. He still doesn’t get it though. An argument ensues though none of it serious. Keyleth tries to steal a card from the deck using her druidcraft but doesn’t pan out well. To be fair, drunk Keyleth and magic use have not and will never go well together, Voice of the Tempest or not. Before you know it some other patrons rather rudely insists you and your friends take this elsewhere or they’ll make you. You should have known the moment Grog smiled, this wouldn’t end well. And in a matter of seconds a fight ensued. It spread like wildfire like any tavern brawl does. You let them fight it out, stay seated with Percy as you two clink your glasses together.
“So how has your day been?”
“Uneventful until now.” Percy speaks casually. “And yours?” You bite the inside of your cheek in the way he knows you to do when you’re trying to formulate a nice answer as opposed to a more unfiltered one.
“Eventful. Given our friends arrived a couple of hours ago. You’re welcome by the way. I managed to keep them from exploring the clocktower on their own.” You take a sip of your wine.
“Oh thank the gods.” He breathes in relief. You spared him a likely disaster. “How will I ever repay you?” He adds a bit more dramatically. Maybe it’s the wine. You laugh.
“Marry me?” Were he less schooled in proper etiquette he might have spewed across the table. He looks around but no caught on, they’re too occupied in the fight. You’re content being a witness for now it seemed. Percy worries you might have caught on somehow, that you might have figured it out but you don’t let anything show. “I’m joking. Partially. One day. If you ask nicely but for now, think we should help them out?” You gesture to the tavern-wide brawl and save the bottle you two were sharing before someone is thrown onto the table and pummelled right in the face by Pike.
“Yes. You’re probably right.” He blurts out and downs his whole glass. You down the last bit of your glass, a large swig from the bottle and get up. You offer your hand. Percy takes it as well as  the bottle as you help him to his feet. He feels like he is going to need that booze to deal with the near heart attack you gave him but before he can take a swig of his own he’s forced to turn the bottle into a weapon. Quickly he turns it in his grasp and hits it over the head of some man charging for the both of you. The man didn’t see the blow coming and glass shatters along with the remaining liquid inside.
“What a waste of a perfectly good chardonnay.” You pout.
“I’ll get you a new one.” He’ll buy you a whole cellar’s worth if you want. He might actually…
“My hero.” You joke pulling Percy aside and aiming a high kick at the face of another drunkard coming for the two of you. You peck his cheeks before the fight continues and you’re no longer able to have this brief bubble of solitude. You’re in the fray now but you’re in it together. Together and you kick some ass. It’s magnificent and just as he had thought, it does feel like old times. You’re having a grand old time. He’s not ashamed to admit you saved his ass when he got a little sentimental and couldn’t shake a certain memory or simply stopped to admire your magnificence.
But all good things get even better when the guard shows up and Vox Machina ends up running like some juvenile troublemakers. The guards didn’t notice who you were and you doubt any of you look like the respected and well known group of heroes in this state and so you took advantage of this. Scram! You ran and enjoyed losing their trail but as a group of stumbling oafs that’s an incredibly difficult thing to do and so you separated. You stuck with Percy pulling him into alleyway and street though he could have pointed out the fastest and quickest way back to the castle. It’s his city after all but he enjoyed living in this moment and when you pushed him against the wall a couple of times pressing close to him while trying to cover your own giggles, you were simply adorable. He was going to make this moment last. By the time you got closer to the castle district you’d been going so long what little booze you had had all but faded.
“So how about we continue this inside over a bottle of true top shelf from Emon? I brought some from my last visit. I think you’ll appreciate the vintage.” The two of you begin to climb the stairs of Whitestone Castle.
“That’s a fantastic idea…” You nod satisfied with his answer. “There’s something I’ve been meaning to ask you…” Percy can feel the blood pumping in his ears, his entire body is pulsing. He feels short of breath, and everything is just chaos but so right at the same time. You look over the city.
“Did you hear that?” You wonder but Percy gently grabs your chin, turns you to face him and standing level with you; the castle to one side, the town to the other. This is it. This is the moment.
“Tonight was quite enjoyable. I’ve missed times like these. My fondest memories are in the trivial things. I couldn’t help but reminisce-“ You smile and bring your palm up to cup his cheek.
“Is that why you almost got a barrel to the head and thrown through a window? Because you got distracted?” You jest and peck your lips to his briefly brushing your thumb along his cheekbone.
“I’m trying to say something nice and you’re making a fool out of me.” He returns in jest.
“Okay okay. I’m listening. Please continue proclaiming your undying love for me.” He lets his fingers slip into your hair and gives an ever so light tug. “Oi!” You exclaim and roll your eyes at him but smile. You’ve had your fun. He knows you’re joking but little did you know in part that was very much his intention. The irony. He’ll forever hold it over your head. As you would want and expect him to do. He needs to keep you on your toes after all, or you might accuse him of slacking on the job.
“I’ve not been the partner I should have been for the last few days. I’m aware of my flaws and you have put up with them, you’ve scolded me for them and pulled me out of my own insanities. You keep me walking the path I did not ever think I could. I owe my life, my home, my world to you and I could not ever repay you for what you have given me. I feel my life would be duller without you in it. I’d be lost with out you. Perhaps it is selfish of me to think so but I would love to have you at my side, to be at your side for the rest of our lives.” Rarely does he get you speechless. You always have something to say, some witty remark, some teasing quip or just some input. He’s always welcomed it. He always will but now it is your turn stand there wide-eyed processing his words, lips parted ever so lightly. You had been stroking your thumb along his cheekbone before but your motions had frozen. You try to formulate a response and he awaits patiently.
“If you’re selfish then so am I. Let us be selfish together.” You smile and pull him into a deep kiss. He still hadn’t asked the question he intended to ask but he’ll take this moment. He gets caught up in it for a while until he breaks the kiss. He leans your head against his, reaches into his breast pocket. Your eyes dart to the side but you decide to ignore whatever caught your attention. He takes one of your hands and within it you feel something cold and metal.
“Will you marry me?” Percy breathes. This is not what he intended or how he intended it to go but he couldn’t wait. He couldn’t analyse it to death. He couldn’t plan every single detail. This, this was just perfect. No grand displays, no banquet or a fancy ball. Instead it was a night out with a tavern brawl and a run from the authorities. It was perfect and now here, on the steps of his home, at the root of his life in this moment he entangles it with you.
You look down, at the rings in your hand; two of them, one beautifully detailed but not ostentatious. The set stones are precious and enhance the design. The other is a slightly simpler version, more muted but still beautifully made. You’ve never seen anything like it. They’re unique and that’s when you realise what they’re made from. Your first job with Vox Machina. Percy had given his share to Vex as he always tended to do with his earnings. She resided over the finances. You’d come across a beautifully made silver broach, large and very ostentatious made from platinum and set with the most gaudy aquamarine and diamonds. You’d told him he should keep it; because you thought it matched his eyes and should he ever need a rainy day fund, that piece would make him a king for a day. He’d kept it. He’d kept it all these years. The stones had been cut down to smaller ones and the platinum melted to form the bands. They’re beautiful. They’re perfect and you know Percy well enough he would have trusted no jeweller with this task. He’d have trusted non but his own hands.
“You made these?” You ask enthralled as you pick up the simpler of the bands.
“Yes.” He’s practically shaking in anticipation. You take his hand, and place the ring around his finger.
“If you even for a single second-“ His heart beats so fast he thinks he might pass out. He’d almost be more content facing the Briarwoods as opposed to dealing with this stress.
“Of course I’ll marry you.” Percy feels like he can breathe again.
“Oh thank the gods. I thought I might have fainted.” He chuckles as he takes the remaining ring from your palm and places it on your own finger.
“I’d have caught you.” The image passes through his mind.
“Before or after you had a laugh?” He never said it was a graceful image.
“Can’t have my husband-to-be mess up his handsome face, now can I?” You grin and press your lips to his entwining your hands. That satisfying feeling; of that cold metal against your skin, and feeling it on his, that’s something out of this world you could not have begun to describe.
“Excuse me?! You were going to propose all this time and made us miss like half if it?” Scanlan pushes forward, clothes stained by you don’t even want to know what. “I would have made an awesome show! We could have had fireworks, music, hell, I’d even teach Grog an interpretive dance.”
“Intentrepative what now?” The goliath seems more focussed on the leaking barrel of ale on his shoulder.
“Wait you’re engaged? To who?” Keyleth clearly hasn’t sobered up yet and is leaning on Vex who just pats the girl’s arm.
“Let’s get you sobered up, Keyleth.” She begins dragging the druid past you and up to the palace but not without a quick “Congratulations.” and the implication of leaving you to enjoy your moment.
“I’m officiating.” Pike follows suit and begins ushering the others forward as well. You watch them make their way up the stairs.
“That’s our life in a nutshell, right there.” You claim.
“I couldn’t agree more.” He takes a step forward and your entwined hands urge you to join. You do without a moment of hesitation, unable to wipe that smile of your face. Neither can Percy by the looks of it. That’s okay. You can be fools tonight. You’ll be fools in the morning still and when people come knocking. You’ll tell them to fuck off and be fools a moment longer.
“You sure you want to spend the rest of your life with me?” You ask jokingly.
“Oh yes.” That’ll do.

The Lost de Rolo Chp. 3
Trinket
Tumblr media
Previous Chapter.
Next Chapter.
Obligatory Trinket POV. Pre-stream events are referenced here.
TW: Blood, body modification, mentioned death
Trinket was not in his armor for once.
The bear had grown accustomed to the weight of it, so it felt a bit weird as he ambled around without it.
His Vex was currently in the food room with Keyleth and Scanlan as they went through the sticks and bottles they'd traded shiny things for. Grog was with them, not paying attention as he focused on his sharp thing, scrapping a rock across the edge to make it more sharp.
It was a new sharp thing, one that was dark with a red shiny thing on the not-sharp end and didn't exactly smell right. The bear preferred Grog's other sharp thing to this one.
Trinket eyed the dark sharp before huffing as he flopped onto the stone floor at His Vex's feet, tapping his claws against it in boredom.
His Vex smiled and offered a quick head scritch before giving her attention back to Keyleth while Scanla said something that had His Vex glaring.
Trinket didn't care about what they were talking about. He just wanted to go with them this time.
He'd been left behind after those... Not good things had attacked.
Trinket didn't know what they were, but they were bad. They had hurt Vax, then sent other not-good things to hurt his friends! Trinket hadn't been able to protect his friends either time and then His Vex told him to stay behind.
He hoped that despite not protecting them last time, he could follow them on their next adventure.
Like the last time, it had something to do with Percy's family. A missing piece of it.
Trinket wanted to help Percy find this missing piece, he knew what it was like to miss family and didn't want Percy to feel that again.
But his armor was gone, taken off of him.
It seemed like he would be left behind again.
Keyleth and Vax could want to braid his fur and make him look pretty again, (He didn't like it, but it had made them happy. Trinket would sit through it again if it made Vax and Keyleth happy.) But, it looked like he wouldn't be coming with them. Again.
A sad huff left the bear and he shoved his head into Vex's lap.
He didn't want to be left behind.
The front door opened and shut as two sets of footsteps came down the hall and into the room.
Trinket recognized the sweet, warm smell that came with Pike and the smokey-powdery scent that came from Percy.
Percy used to smell like something was constantly burning, but he didn't anymore. Trinket was glad that he didn't smell like burning. That smell was something, bad. But it was gone, and that made His Vex happy.
Percy made His Vex happy.
Just like how Keyleth made Vax happy. Or, used to.
Keyleth still made Vax happy, just not like she used to. He seemed sad when he looked at Keyleth now.
A few days after they came back, Scanlan said Vax and Keyleth were having a long talk. Pike had smacked Scanlan across the back of his head and said it wasn't that kind of talk. Trinket didn't understand what they meant. Their language, though being the same as His Vex's, was weird,
"Where's Vax?" His Vex asked, making the bear lift his head to see that Vax hadn't returned.
Pike scratched his ears as she walked past to sit beside Grog who set his big sharp aside,
"He was still talking to Father Tristan when we left,"
"Whatever for?"
Pike shrugged at His Vex as Percy fell into the empty seat next to Trinket.
Percy was drawn tight up on the chair with fingers tugging at his short hair. Trinket knew from experience that it was painful and shuffled over to plop his head in Percy's lap.
The human didn't even question it and dropped one of his hands to Trinket's head. He didn't give any scritches though, which made Trinket huff,
"But did it go good at the temple?" Grog asked, which made everyone turn to Percy who sighed while removing the circles on his face,
"It did work, Grog," Trinket saw a slight smile on Percy's face, "I saw her. My sister's alive,"
"Well dat's great!" Grog exclaimed while clapping, "When we leavin'?"
"And, uh, where are we going? Exactly?" Keyleth asked,
"Westruun,"
"That's great! That's really close, Percy!" Keyleth sounded happy to Trinket.
His head was still under the table so he couldn't see her,
"I know. It's... closer than I ever thought she would be..."
"However," Pike's voice cut across Percy's quiet talking, "We should talk about Vax's reaction,"
There was a very long pause that made Trinket wonder if something had happened. He shuffled until his head was no longer on Percy's lap and plunked it onto the table.
Nothing had happened, but everyone was looking at Pike who appeared worried,
"What do you mean Vax's reaction?" His Vex questioned while gently rubbing his ears,
"I don't know. He just... Didn't seem happy? About where Ciara was,"
Percy spoke up after Pike, the hand with the stone rubbing the ear His Vex wasn't touching,
"Vax recognized the building she walked into quickly. Almost immediately, in fact," Trinket's ears twitched at the soft footsteps that came into the kitchen, "I'm certain he knows where Ciara is,"
"You would be right about that, Freddie," Everyone turned to see Vax leaning against the wall.
Trinket didn't like the look on Vax's face. It didn't look okay, it looked sad and angry.
Trinket didn't like when Vax, or any of his friends, were sad or angry. That meant something was wrong,
"Where was she, Vax?" His Vex asked.
Vax's eyes darted around the room before looking at the floor. Trinket looked too, but there wasn't anything at Vax's feet,
"Entering the Clasp's tavern,"
A low growl escaped Trinket as the rest of the room went silent.
He remembered that word.
Clasp.
Trinket didn't know what a clasp was, but he knew it was full of people who had hurt Vax and Pike a while ago, forcing them to fight some kind of monster after kidnapping them. They had killed someone important to the clasp thing, and surprisingly, it had been Scanlan who had gotten them out of that situation.
Trinket still doesn't fully believe that Shorty was able to do that by himself. He most likely had help that Trinket didn't see.
But that clasp thing was back and Trinket didn't want any more of his friends being put in danger because of that clasp and Grog was agreeing with him,
"T'ose asses!" He growled while reaching for the dark sharp, "We got t'deal wit' them again?"
Pike sighed while leaning against the big man, "Looks like it Buddies," She glanced at Vax who was rubbing the back of his neck, "Last time, you mentioned that you were a member,"
"Yeah, I did. And that didn't go so well. But, we were dealing with the Emon chapter. I was, for lack of a better term, initiated into the Westruun chapter,"
"And, even though that sounds great, amazing, and something that could totally help us, I have the feeling you're about to tell us something not good," Scanlan piped up as he crossed his arms on the table as Vax sighed.
Vax tugged at his hair before shaking his head and saying,
"The only reason I joined was because I discovered that someone had contracted the Clasp..." Vax stopped talking before looking at Vex.
Trinket recognized that look, it meant His Vex wouldn't like what came next,
"Someone had made a contract to have a member of the Clasp, bring him my sister. l managed to make a deal with one of the Spirelings-"
"What kind of deal?" His Vex's voice was tense as she stood up to look Vax in the eye, "What kind of deal did you make with the Spireling?"
Trinket could tell this topic made His Vex nervous, and with the way Percy's fingers briefly tugged on his ear, Trinket knew he was uneasy too.
And when Vax didn't answer right away, Trinket grew nervous too.
Vex may be Trinket's person, but he'd known Vax since he'd been a cub! Trinket didn't want Vax to be taken away by some kind of deal! From what the others have said about their time away, that had almost happened to Percy!
Trinket wasn't going to let some, deal, thing, take Vax away!
"In a way, I had to complete the contract. They wanted me to bring them a body, and I brought them a body. They brought out a stick made out of tongues, and used it to turn the person I brought, into you," Vax sighed and kept looking toward the ground.
Trinket still didn't know why the floor was fascinating to Vax,
"And, they branded me afterward. The Spirelings had me swear loyalty to the Clasp. So, if they ever called upon me, I would have to answer,"
Vex's hands were clenched around the edge of the table and her fingers were turning white. Trinket worried he would hear something snap if she didn't let go so he lathered a slobbery lick to her fingers.
It did the trick as her hand found its way to Trinket's head and settled against his fur. But, the bear could feel the tension of his human from the stiff way she stroked his ears,
"Have they ever called on you?" Trinket didn't like how tense His Vex's voice was.
Vax shook his head, "No. Never,"
"But that doesn't mean they won't-" Trinket felt Percy's hand grab Vex's atop his head and her voice cut off with a sharp, angry breath before she slowly sat back down.
Trinket shifted his head to look at His Vex.
She was still angrily looking at Vax while her mouth had pressed into a thin line. The bear knew Vax was in for a long and loud yelling at some later point.
Keyleth carefully twisted her stick between her fingers while nervously looking between the twins,
"Could the, membership, help? I mean, I know it didn't help last time, but, you said that you were a part of the Westruun Chapter, and, we are going to Westrunn, so, could that be in our favor?"
Vax shook his head, "I don't think it does, Kiki. I'm not in any position to ask for any favors,"
"Also, and this is just a thought, the person who paid to have Vex kidnapped might want to try again if he sees her in Westruun," Trinket growled lowly as Scanlan talked.
If that bastard so much as looked at His Vex, Trinket would bite his head off! He would rip him apart and crush his bones into splinters!
"Scanlan, for once, has a point," Percy said as Scanlan let out some kind of protest about always being on point,
"Then we kill 'im!" Grog exclaimed, still holding onto the dark sharp that made Trinket uneasy,
"I was never told who he was, Grog," Vax said,
"Then how did you know about this contract to kidnap me?" Vex's voice was still tight with anger and not even Trinket nuzzling her side was able to calm her,
"I politely asked the man why he was following you,"
"An' he jus' told you what he was doin'?" Grog asked, finally putting the bad sharp thing back down, unknowingly allowing Trinket to marginally relax against Vex.
The bad sharp was still there, but out of Grog's hands,
"The main problem will be what happens if they try to open the contract again," Added Pike which made Percy ask,
"If that is a possibility, then maybe-"
"Percival Fredrickstein von Musel Klossowski de Rolo III, if the next words out of your mouth are that I should stay behind I swear!"
Trinket watched the unfolding argument with disinterest. He would like it if His Vex stayed behind with him. It wouldn't be as lonely as last time.
But, he knew that Percy meant a lot to His Vex and she would want to help him find the missing piece. Which meant that if she were forced to stay with Trinket, she would be unhappy. Trinket didn't want His Vex to be unhappy, but he also wanted His Vex to be safe.
The shouting continued around Trinket, but he only pressed further into Vex until she shot up from her seat and proclaimed,
"I am not staying behind! And the next person who suggests that will find themselves hogtied in the dungeon! Now get your shit ready!"
In the silence that followed, Vex grabbed the sticks and two bottles off the table and stomped out of the room.
Vax sighed while pushing off the wall, "Well, you heard her,"
Vox Machina began packing their things so they would be ready to leave early the next morning, but Trinket stayed in his place at the table.
No one said anything about Trinket going with them. It looked like he would be left behind again.
He huffed in despair and lay on the ground, sad that he wouldn't be able to help until His Vex called out from further in the Keep,
"Trinket, come here. Your new armor's arrived! We have to make sure it fits before we leave!"
The bear shot up from his place on the floor and began running to where he had heard His Vex, almost trampling Scanlan in the process, but he was too excited!
He was going with them!
Tumblr media
They flew over Westruun, their Matron watching through their eyes as they followed their Girl.
They had been watching her since she was a child in Whitestone, climbing trees in the gardens to hide from the adults, running and playing with the other children when she wished to join them in their games.
They'd always watched over her, until those things came.
Those things hid her from their Matron's sight for three years.
They could not find a way to see her, even their Matron could not find her inside that castle. But they watched as Whitestone became a dark place from the roof of their Matron's temple.
The ravens watched as the people fell into despair as the sun hid from the sky while dark magic leaked from the castle.
Years passed, they felt the darkness spread and their Matron's sight on Whitestone weakened. The dark magic in the land was suffocating, but the ravens stayed. No matter how many of them fell to the darkness, they stayed.
What had started as seven, dwindled down to two when they once again caught sight of their charge.
She was different.
Her hair was no longer dark but a shock of startling white that looked paler than the Matron's mask. Dark blood stubbornly clung to the changed hair despite the pouring rain, and her right arm hung uselessly at her side.
That was another change, the arm.
What had once been flesh and blood was now dark and metallic. Gears replaced joints and rods were speared into whatever remained of her shoulder.
Their Girl was in pain and scared.
She's been in pain since they followed her into the woods and out of Whitestone.
They did what they could for her.
They brought small animals they hunted, knocked fruits and nuts from trees, and stole what they could from small parties of humans they came across. She took what they brought her without question.
She began to teach herself how to steal, and they would distract her targets when they could. But she soon became proficient enough to not have to rely on their help. Their Girl began stealing coins from pouches and food from stalls and tables.
They watched her teach herself how to wield weapons with her left hand.
They watched her learn the new movements of the metal arm.
They listened when she began calling them Adrik and Nyx.
They watched her discover the city of Westruun, and the temple dedicated to their Matron.
They watched her enter and peered through the windows as she hesitantly began to pray after placing nine coins on the altar.
They watched their Girl find solace with their Matron who rejoiced that one of her own was reaching out.
They watched over her, but they could do nothing when she was grasped by the Spireling.
They could only watch as what little spirit she regained was crushed by the Clasp.
They could hear their Matron weep when their girl fell back into a darkness that clouded her mind.
She stopped seeking solace with the Matron and began ignoring the ravens who had watched over her for years.
They asked their Matron to intervene, but she would always say it was not time, her voice full of sorrow.
But today had been different.
Their Matron told them the Other was coming.
They didn't know much about the Other. Only that his gold thread was entangled with their Girl's and that their Matron's eyes had been on him since he'd encountered those things that had taken their Girl's light.
The ravens knew he was coming, and that one of them would have to lead him to their Girl.
But he wasn't here yet, and until he was there, they would both stay with their Girl.

Ok don’t publish it if you don’t have to but man this weekend is bumming me right out with this “
Tumblr media
Yeah, there is certainly some aggression going on against people wishing for resurrection because others find it a poignant narrative that a sacrifice can't be undone, that it lasts and has consequences, that it puts weight to the stakes. And they think that coming back to life after specifically doing something you know will 100% kill you cheapens sacrifice.
Personally, I think that being brought back after you willingly and knowingly and successfully gave your life for others tells a story of how much you're loved. It's your friends saying "Fuck that. You're going to live. We're all going to live. We'll keep dragging each other back until we can't anymore, so fucking be here and fight."
It also adds another level of desperation to be stronger, smarter, to not be caught like that ever again because who knows if you can get them back next time (and however many times you fail after that). Resurrections get harder ever time a person is brought back. This is part of what bit Scanlan's ass right before Bard's Lament: the Revivify didn't take, so the rest of Vox Machina brought in his daughter to call him back during the Resurrection (which he hated) and got the chance to be dicks about bringing him back with the dumb pranks, all of which led to setting Scanlan off. And sure, Bells Hells had that desperation to keep each other alive from the Bassuras fight, but that doesn't mean that the sentiment can't be further sharpened even when you've managed to steal back all the lives of your party members that she took.
Honestly, I think that just having Chet and FCG die against the Murder Machine of Otohan after Bells Hells specifically and successfully went to efforts to get stronger still ups the stakes even if both end up revived. "All our might and we still faced that loss. It would have been all of us if FCG didn't make that play. We still cannot face the enemy leadership head-on as we are. We must get stronger still."
And I really think there's some fun character development to be had in giving FCG a flesh body. Will he actually like what they've envied about the others? How does one handle a completely new body that they're grateful for (that they should be grateful for, otherwise they'd be dead) but is just so different from what they know? Yes, FCG had that last moment clarity that he was in fact already fully alive, but there's definitely some "alive in the flesh" things to explore.
And more faith to explore too. Like, did he get to meet the Changebringer and talk with her in the afterlife? The Raven Queen? Speaking of just being in the afterlife, what about meeting Eshteross again? The other members of the Division of Public Benefit that he killed?
Also, I'm not sure how big a fan I am of the heavy breakdowns that will happen if FCG isn't resurrected. Bells Hells is suffering pretty good as is and I'd like them to have some happiness inbetween all the Moon Bullshit. Conflict drives a story, but you need soft moments to wind it down between heavy moments.
Because truthfully, most of what you get from keeping FCG dead is a bunch of breakdowns in the party without it's most optimistic member who actually advocates for communication, which they all suck at for various personal reasons. And a push towards the Villain Arc path that, honestly, a few are walking just fine without FCG staying dead and/or can still be pushed further down it just by the fact that he decided to kill himself to save their asses when no one wants to let any of the others go.
I do think that as far as martyrdom goes, what FCG did took a nice step away from "giving my life because it's worth less than any one of theirs and I think dying for a cause will give me absolution for the people I rage killed" and into "giving my life because it will save them and I don't know what else to do that will save them." There are certainly posts that get into the distinction between those choices better than I have. Which is where I think the "best ending for FCG" idea comes from, as it happened under the "best" reasoning for FCG to martyr himself. And to a certain degree, people have decided that martyrdom was unavoidable for FCG or that he was just highly prone to it and this was a good time/way to do it.
Still doesn't change that a self-sacrificing character did in fact sacrifice themself, though. Or that it didn't have to be the end that FCG met.
And I understand to some degree how Everyone Comes Back to Life if You Try can feel like it undermines the stakes. Because if no one stays dead, what do you have to fear from walking into mortal danger? Everyone will be fine right? Which is wrong. There is still trauma in dying, even when you're brought back. The realization of mortality, the struggle to steal back a life when it's not just a quick prayer in the heat of battle. And the ever looming possibility that you do it right and it's still not enough to steal them back.
Also, from the wider in-the-game-world's perspective: Resurrection is rare as shit and only people with immense wealth, connections, and/or power even have a shot at it.
Even mechanically it's not easy. You have to mind time limits, expensive costs, body conditions, spell levels and slots, not to mention that the dice can always say no.
So yes, Bells Hells probably needs to go to less effort to Reincarnate FCG than they did to resurrect Laudna because all they're missing is components while they have the likes of Keyleth who kind of owe them for Moon Scouting and killing Otohan and should be able to provide.

is there a canon reason why percy and vex broke up? did tal or laura ever say why exactly?
not to my knowledge? they mentioned a lot about the secret wedding, but the break up was mentioned offhand in the campaign wrap-up talks machina, when they were asked if there was anything anyone did during the year off that never came up in the campaign
i will say though that in quite a few talks machinas tal and laura talk about perc'ahlia like a celebrity relationship (or specifically say "yeah we're one of those couples"), and that's a thing you tend to see fairly often with celebrities that end up in tabloids - they have a complicated life, they break up and get back together quite a bit, so i think part of it is tal and laura having fun playing that drama and letting them be those disaster celebrities
if you want my speculation on an in-canon reason though? i think the commitment freaked them out
like vex has always had issues surrounding stability, she's not had it in her life since she was a little kid, and she's just made excuses to herself her whole life that she's fine because she doesn't want stability - she just wants her brother and to keep moving and to never have to worry about putting down roots or forming emotional attachments because it hurts less that way. it's why she gets so jealous and snippy when vax starts showing interest in keyleth, and why she keeps shutting down his attempts to tell her he's moving to zephrah - she can't keep being flighty and only attached to her brother if he wants to settle down with someone else
as much as she loves percy, and they're good for each other, we know from the grey hunt trial that the idea of settling down with him scares her, because it's new, and because it means for the first time in a long time she has something to lose
percy is almost the opposite, he lost his entire family once already and he doesn't ever want to do that again. it's why he gets so vicious when scanlan leaves, because vox machina is his new family, and no one's allowed to tear that apart again (also why we get the really tentative "i know we don't always agree and i know i can be unkind, but... you know you're family, right?" to grog immediately after)
but a relationship is a whole new step, he trusts vex about as much as he does anyone, but this isn't just trusting her with his anger issues, or trusting her with his city, this is trusting her with the future, with his future, with always being around. i don't think he's confident enough to believe she loves him that much, that anyone could, and if he lets himself take that step fully, he has so much more to lose if something happens like it did last time
so it's all well and good when the relationship is new, when they're still trying things out, when it's flirty and it doesn't have to be serious if they don't want it to
even in moments where it's emotionally heavy, like percy's resurrection, it's still new and in the moment, they're not looking past what's immediately in front of them
(and even after that heavy moment, vex got nervous percy didn't like her back and decided to push it all to the back of her brain and not think about it - vax straight up told her to go chase him bc she deserved to be happy and she instead got drunk and changed the subject)
but then the fighting's over. they're not worried about their lives every day. no one died, they're both still here. and it starts to sink in with them that this isn't going anywhere. that this can be their forever, if they choose it. and that scares both of them, and when they get scared they tend to either wall themselves off or lash out, and both would cause a schism in their relationship. and then one day it turns into an argument and in the heightened emotion one of them says they should break up and the other agrees
and now they're emotionally safe, because if they cause the relationship to end on their terms it can't be pulled away from them unexpectedly
but they're not actually happy
and maybe they come to that realisation on their own, more likely they talk about it with their friends and vax and keyleth tell them they're being idiots
and then the question is what to do about it
it's possible they went slowly back into it
or, since we know their first marriage proposals were a dare, maybe they weren't even together again yet
i could see that being exactly the sort of thing they'd do if they wanted to get back together but they didn't want to be the first one to admit that they wanted to
skip the dating phase we already did that i dare you to marry me
and maybe they talk about it much later, maybe they don't
but i think by the time they got to the marriage, they'd realised they wanted this to be more than a casual thing, and it's still probably scary, but there's no one else they'd trust to get them through that fear and come out the other side

Speaking of Laura and Marisha having relatively weak chemistry, which CR cast members do you think have the strongest chemistry (romantic or otherwise) across campaigns?
I've tried to limit this because I could literally name a great relationship for basically every cast pairing at this point, but some of my favorites. To keep things balanced, I've done a sort of circle situation with two pairings per cast member. I also haven't included Matt just because I think it would be weird because as DM he has to play off everyone well, and he does.
Travis and Liam always have something bizarrely intense and it's different every single time and it's never quite romantic (other than Bertrand/Lieve'tel) but it is, frequently, homoerotic. Obviously most present for Fjord and Caleb and particularly their conversation in the Xhorhaus, but the "I want to give you an experience" line in late Campaign VM and Chetney and Orym's conversation in the Heartmoor are two examples.
Ashley and Travis are also always good; Pike and Grog are legendary for a reason, Fearne and Chetney have some extremely fun stuff going on but can also take it to more serious places, notably their discussion after Ashton's shard absorption attempt. and Fjord and Yasha didn't interact a ton but their few moments (I'm specifically thinking their shopping trip around episode 108 or 109?) are stellar.
Sam and Ashley have the same quality I think Liam and Travis have, namely, they are on some level playing chicken with each other and neither will back down. We see this with Pikelan; my favorite interaction is Pike being mad at Scanlan after he returns from his Meat Man era. Pike and Tary and the flashcards to remember VM is also a legendary scene for a reason. Veth and Yasha have some unbelievably funny conversations (I killed my whole family, I'll throw you under a bridge) and FCG and Fearne have run the gamut from poignant (post-Otohan Fight) to ridiculous (Fearne riding FCG around and using them as a thermos; honestly, the latest Otohan encounter somehow straddled these two vibes).
Laura and Sam should be a legendary cast pairing. They tend to play in a similar space thematically and they also keep overlapping in some sort of stat or outlook as well, without ever playing characters who knew each other beforehand. It's uncanny. We had Vex and Scanlan as Vox Machina's Charm (highlight being Vex's reaction during Bard's Lament). Vex and Tary becoming best friends and opening a bakery. Jester and Veth's shenanigans and deep friendship (messing around in that temple in Zadash; Jester confiding in her about Fjord kissing her; that one time where they encountered the syphilis bandits and kept running past each other in the dark; Jester taking the flask; and many more). And FCG and Imogen's early campaign closeness, with Imogen insisting on FCG's personhood and the two of them doing mind and dream stuff together.
Taliesin and Laura, unsurprisingly given the appeal of Perc'ahlia, are always great as well. Their willingness as Percy and Vex to be incredibly honest with each other, even about their darker traits, is commendable. Molly and Jester were fascinating because I don't think he respected her much but he did enjoy her company, and she admired him greatly. Team Cleric was also, naturally, a great duo, and I particularly think of them both returning to their respective thematic wells of closed-offness and recognizing it in each other, but going to other places to open up. We didn't get a ton of Kingsley, but he and Jester seem to get along pretty well! And Imogen and Ashton's standout moment was post-shard, but they also had a really good conversation after All-Minds-Burn, and I think they are able to embrace the tension regarding their different idealizations of estranged parents as seen in the latest episode.
Marisha and Taliesin are also really unafraid to explore conflict with each other, and it enhances their character interactions. Percy and Keyleth's friendship is fascinating because it seems that pre-stream they were quite close, but once the Briarwoods arc hit they often found themselves at odds and played off each other brilliantly. I love Molly and Beau's belligerence as well; that is one of my personal big regrets about Molly's death, and Marisha did a fantastic job showing how Beau was affected. Beau and Caduceus were also really interesting, in that they saw each other as the adults of the team for a while, especially early on. Beau and Kingsley have a great conversation in the Nein Reunited. And I've been pretty open about finding Laudna and Ashton's chemistry fascinating; while I enjoyed it romantically earlier, and would have loved to see how that played out, there's just such a great weird tension now, post-shard, that's hard to pin down.
Liam and Marisha have two of I think the most popular relationships in C1 and C2 and with good reason. Vax and Keyleth complement each other incredibly well, and I find Keyleth's feelings about the Raven Queen and how she and Vax approach them very differently to be beautifully done. Empire Siblings are again a favorite - they're so often at odds early on even as Beau has a lot of empathy for Caleb, and they're both the nerds of the party and among the most politically-minded to the point of working closely together years after the campaign. Laudna and Orym are also fascinating because they have these similar and yet wildly different ties to Vox Machina, and Orym feels for her situation, and they have some great conversations during the Issylra arc, but I actually love the growing tension. I love Orym flat out telling Laudna that this mission is important and he is pressuring Imogen because only she is capable of getting this information. I'm excited for the infiltration that's coming up!
But also because I can't limit myself here's some thoughts generally about cases where it's not every campaign but it's worth watching. The short version is "Travis and Ashley have some kind of chemistry with everyone."
I can name at least one relationship, romantic or platonic, between one of Travis's characters and a character from every other cast member, but I specifically want to shout out him and Marisha, who have zero romantic chemistry and bananas platonic chemistry in not just all three campaigns but also EXU Calamity and Candela Obscura Chapter 2. (He and Taliesin tend to have a fun and different thing going on each campaign and have a lot of similarities as players; Scanlan and Grog's clown to clown communication and Fjord and Veth's weirdly charged hostility are great; and hilariously I am obviously a massive fan of Fjord and Jester but I feel like the Baileyhams each campaign are like either we're doing high romance or we're going extremely our separate ways, which kind of makes sense in that they have extremely different approaches to D&D but also a lot of overlap in themes. Like on the rare occasions Grog and Vex, or Chetney and Imogen talk it's very good but they're certainly not the closest of characters)
Ashley also plays well with everyone. She has phenomenal chemistry with both Marisha and Laura. Beauyasha is readily apparent but also what we saw of Pike with both Keyleth and Vex was fantastic, and Imogen and Fearne are great and have some sparks, and Yasha and Jester had some incredible conversations. I also enjoy Ashley and Liam but have never shipped their characters romantically (and I suppose that was only even feasible in C1 given character sexualities); that's on my list of "could be fun" because they do always play off each other well. I will say, Ashton and Fearne have grown on me as a pairing but Ashley and Taliesin have always like...quietly vibed and had some great moments, and I think Molly and Yasha was (platonically) promising and cut short, and I love the conversation where Caduceus encourages Yasha to tell Beau how she feels, but they've never quite blown me away. I would like to see it though. There's potential.
Marisha and Sam seem to operate in very different spaces and so like...Keyleth and Scanlan, or Laudna and FCG, don't really interact much though they do have some mechanical overlap (Keyleth and Scanlan were good in combat together but didn't talk a ton) but specifically as Beau and Veth they were incredible. This is out of game but I very much enjoy their rapport during the Midst roundtables. Would love to see more.
Liam and Sam are also a fascinating case in that they're obviously very close friends irl but it's only as Veth and Caleb, and as the Grimms in Candela Obscura, that they've played characters who were close. They do have great chemistry though, romantic and platonic, and I'd love to see it explored. Liam and Laura are also interesting in that I love the twins and think they're amazing, and I like Orym and Imogen's relationship but particularly with C2 in the rearview, I just do not see much romantic chemistry between them at all. Bonkers good platonic chemistry though.
Taliesin and Sam are also a fun one in that I do like FCG and Ashton's friendship and their post-shard absorption conversation was a standout, as is Percy's outburst at Scanlan during the Bard's Lament and his friendship with Tary (and Tary's crush on him). Veth and Molly had some good moments; Veth and Caduceus did NOT know how to interact with each other.

Headcanons of Grog, Pike, Scanlan, Percy, Vex, Keyleth, and Vax being surprised by their quiet friend because they didn't notice them at all! Said friend is just that quiet, not because they're being mischievous.
I've never done headcannons so I hope I did this right lmao ALSO I'M NOT DEAD. I sure feel like it lmao. Had a very long string of bad luck, as I'll put it, but thankfully it's gotten a little better. GROG - Grog is big and loud, two of his main characteristics. You where the exact opposite, small and quiet. - Despite being his opposite, Grog loved you dearly. In fact, he almost preferred it. If you were just like him you would only be his competition, which wouldn't work because he didn't want to hurt you. - Yet a problem tends to arise when he's a little to loud to hear his lingering shadow. - Most of the time it would take several tries before you could even get his attention. - "Oh! When did you get here?" - He would be a little shocked to hear you have been with him the whole time but would be glad to know you where here with him to cheer him on at his drinking games. PIKE
- Pike enjoys your company, it's so different from most of the others that it's nice to have some time with someone that's not nearly screaming every five minutes. - You both would sit to pray to your deities, many long nights together in silence. - At least that's how the nights usually went. Pike was a lot louder when it came to the day and the rest of Vox. - You can't blame her, her best friend is Grog after all. - So when someone as light footed as you happened to stick around the two cheerfully out spoken fighters it usually resulted in a screaming match, or a shriek if it was just Pike. - "Oh man! You sure got me good that time!!" - She found it more as a game, laughing it off with you. - You tend to make it your goal to keep spooking her as she tries to catch you before you can. SCANLAN - Much like his barbarian buddy he was loud and boy was he proud. - He loved to be in the spot light and loved all the attention from it. - You didn't mind that the spotlight was one him, at least it wasn't on you. - Anytime you did aproach him after a performance of his. He would have eyes and word on the others. Which might be why he didn't see you. - "Gah! Wha- How did you-? (Y/N)! You gotta stop sneaking up to me like that!" - You would just laugh and hand him a drink as he tries to stay grumpy at you, failing horribly. PERCY
- You preferred to stay in the shadows. Not for the same reasons as Vax but it was something that often made Percy feel unsettled. - He would try and cox you out into the light, as an attempt to show you it wasn't all that bad. Despite his efforts, he still found you stalking him and the party in the darker areas. - Even though he knew you were there he would always get a little spooked by your watchful gaze. It was never angry or sorrowful, but more curious and cautious. - He hoped you wouldn't use that to your advantage one day. Or at least not in the way the other would. - He can't tell you how many time he has nearly jumped out of his skin when he sees you. - "I'm going to have to get you a bell..." - "But then that would ruin the point of stealth." - "A bell for around the keep, or my hair will turn whiter than it is now." VEX - She was a hunter, a tracker, no one can out best her eyes. Well, maybe save her brother.... Okay, not even him. - She could see anyone or thing coming from a mile. From dragons to imps, nothing can get the jump on her. - Okay, MOSTLY nothing can get the jump on her. YOU on the other hand just seem to be able to sneak around her senses. - Getting an unexpected light tap on her shoulder was a shock to her, so much so she was ready for a fight. - Thankfully your friendly face was enough for her to lower her bow and take a moment. - "How on this green dirt did you get there?" - "Hmm? Oh! I just walked!" - "That's not- nevermind, what did you need darling?" - So maybe she can't track everything. But you are always a welcomed exception. KEYLETH - Keyleth herself was rather quiet, have moments of quiet to be with nature. - You often admired her Disney Princess like presence finding yourself watching her as she take her times of rest. - It was your moment of rest as much as it was hers, lasting as long as it took for her to spot you. - "AH! Oh! Hello! Oh my god, you scared me!" - "Oh- sorry Keyleth, just getting you to say dinner is made, wouldn't want Grog to take everything again now would we?" - Laughing she stood to make her way to the kitchen, telling you she'd save you a plate as you go to get the others. VAX - Vax, the one that kisses the shadows. HE is the one that sneaks up on people. Making them frighten for their lifes. - He dances with the night and dresses with the dark. - The rouge of Vox. The stealthy assassin. The one you see one second too late. - But that tends to not matter if he cant see what sneaks up on HIM. - He is honestly jealous that you got blessed with such a light foot. Might have to ask you for your secrets later. - Much like his sister he is ready to attack the unknown presences before he places an armed hand to his heart. - "My god feather, you've got to tell me next time you decide to follow me!" - He liked to call you feather after the first few times you happened to spook him. In his words, "You are as light as a feather, and just as pretty as one too."

not the same requester however! how about a continued reaction of the "reader wakes to vox machina member holding them in their sleep" with the chara being the one to wake find they had moved closer/were holding reader that also snuggles closer? their reaction to either moving in their sleep or chose to hold the reader on purpose? just more snuggles by the fire basically.
Part 2! You got it
The previous request (found on masterlist vi) was if y/n woke up to one of the members cuddling them
Percy - he doesn’t think much of it because he wanted to, even his dreams betrayed him. He only pulls you closer
Grog - eyes open only slightly to see his arm over you. Instead of waking up, the barbarian just picks you up more ti where you’re nuzzled in his chest
Keyleth - she wakes up slightly, tightens her grip, but doesn’t care at all. She’s not letting a good thing get away
Vex’ahlia - also has a tight grip on you with a soft smile holding close what she barely thought possible
Pike - small murmur of “five more minutes…” as she curls up more to your side
Vax’ildan - he wakes up slightly, only for the other black wing to wrap around you both. A soft cocoon with his beloved
Scanlan - you’re both barely awake but there’s a mumbled “so warm…” before your free arm is draped around him

Oy Walt,
Truth Serum/Spell with Vaxleth, please? That should be fun, right?
Somehow I know you will find a way to hurt us :)
60. Truth Serum/spell
If there's one thing Vox Machina loves, it's drinking. If there are two things Vox Machina loves, it's drinking and games. If there are three things Vox Machina loves, it's drinking and games and inappropriate uses of magic.
Which is how they all bully Pike, face red and eyes hazy, into casting zone of truth, thereby initiating an instantly intense game of truth or drink. As per the rules, everyone allows the magic to wash over them, and the vulnerability begins.
They draw straws, and Scanlan wins. Pointing a finger at Grog, he demands, "How big is your dick really?"
Grog pouts. "Not fair. You know I ain't good with numbers."
"Compare it to another object!"
Grog's face scrunches up as he thinks way too hard for way too long. Finally he settles on, "Percy's forearm."
The table erupts in gasps and swears. "Wait wait wait," Vex hiccups, swaying slightly. "Is that just length, or girth too?"
"No, it's my turn to ask!" Grog hums a little as he thinks. "Percy..."
"Oh gods," the man in question mutters, his cheeks already tinged pink.
"You ever go to one of the lady houses in Whitestone?"
"I've been to several ladies' houses in Whitestone, Grog." He smiles smugly at having successfully sidestepped the question.
"BOO!" Keyleth tosses a handful of bar pretzels at him. "Answer the question!"
"I do believe it's my turn now." He ignores the disappointed grumbling and levels his eyes at Keyleth, who shrinks in fear of what's coming her way. "Vax."
Oh.
Vax's head is tipped on Keyleth's shoulder, and she's pretty sure he's already half-asleep. "Hm?"
Percy maintains the most deadly eye contact with Keyleth as he asks, "Where do you see yourself in five years?"
Vax hums thoughtfully. "Well, dead, most likely—"
"Fucking hell," Vex groans.
"—but if not that, then...mmm...living in Zephrah with Keyleth and our babies."
Keyleth's face instantly goes up in flames. She buries her nose in her tankard, utterly unable to make eye contact with any of her friends, who are either gagging or making the most obnoxious kissy noises. She nearly chokes on her mead when Vax asks, "Kiki?"
"Hm?" she squeaks.
"Does that scare you?"
Oh, fuck this game. She feels six pairs of eyes boring into her, but the only one she sees are his, large and dark like a cow's, his head twisted up to her with an expression so tender she wonders if he's real. "No," she whispers, "but that's what scares me."
And he grins a stupid, drunk, sloppy grin, so very satisfied with himself, and Keyleth rips her eyes away to throw whatever stupid question at Pike she can think of, anything to get the eyes off of her. As Pike thinks about what animal she'd want to be turned into for the rest of her life, Keyleth sneaks another peek back at Vax, who's still smiling like the cat who got the cream—and okay, maybe they both did, she thinks as she winds her fingers in his beneath the table, tipping her cheek onto the crown of his head with a sigh.

Once An Enemy
Vax x gn!reader
requested by anonymous: Hi! I wanted to request a Vax x reader, but it's enemies to lovers, you can decide the story. If you don't want to write it it's ok. Have a nice day!
Tumblr media
a/n: hello, this is actually a request from a while ago. It ended up like 8 pages single spaced, reaching almost 4,500 words, so I hope you enjoy. I’ll be honest I’m all for slow burn enemies/rivals to friend so hopefully I did the request justice. It is gn and I do a quick look over for any grammar errors. I hope you enjoy and as always, please do not copy my work!
He had stolen the ornate necklace your grandmother had gifted you before her passing. You had never been one for jewelry before, but she loved the intricate piece and it was worth a small fortune. It was the most expensive thing you owned and the bloody half-elf had taken it from you. You had caught him, but he had the edge on you nonetheless.
It was just your luck when you had to work together with him and his team or whatever so that you all wouldn’t be killed because of some misunderstanding between the small town and the mercenaries.
It was not your intention to save the small gnome that needed to learn when to shut up. Bludgeoning one of the townsfolk that was attempting to end your lives actually got you in the good graces of the group, Vox Machina. They even offered to let you stay.
It took some time to get used to their standard of living. You and Percy were the only two that grew up with money, resources, and goods all at your fingertips. Surviving on tavern food, ale, and whatever else you could get your hands on was difficult, to say the least.
This in part was one of the many reasons that Vax did not like you. He felt you were entitled, spoiled, posh, and rude. He believed entirely that you thought you were better than all of them, except for possibly Percy.
You on the other hand hated Vax because he was a liar, thief, and manipulator. He claimed you were the rude one while he had no respect or dignity for others and their possessions. He was nothing more than a charismatic and handsome thief that used his better qualities to obtain whatever it is he wanted whether or not it was legal.
Joining Vox Machina was your hail mary because you had nothing left of your old life. Disowned by your family meant you were thrown onto the streets to fend for yourself. At least the mercenaries helped each other and got along unlike your family.
Despite your protests, Vax continued with his stealing. Regardless of what he said, you didn’t stop placing yourself on a pedestal. Then again, you had no issue putting yourself on a pedestal for never resorting to thievery.
The rest of the group was getting tired of your constant bickering. They had thought you two would work things out eventually, but you never did. A few months was too much for them to handle. Even while intoxicated you and Vax were at each other's throats.
Plans were passed between the others, in hopes you two would make amends. Each plan backfired worse than they could have imagined. Knives were thrown, clothes were torn, hair was pulled, and harsh jabs at the other remained consistent. In one last feeble attempt for some peace between you two, the group decided that it was time to turn to alcohol. The plan was to get you both so drunk that neither of you would have a care in the world.
You and Vax had no intentions of becoming that drunk. If there was anything you shared in common, it was the fact that neither of you wanted to be that shit-faced. Both of you wanted to keep the little bit of dignity you each had left.
So, instead, you pretended to drink all of the contents in your cups. Vax gave some of his alcohol to Grog, while you passed yours off to Scanlan. The entire group was drunk, but you knew that at the end of the day, it would only be you and Vax that would remember the entire night.
Eventually, you were ready to call it a night. You were prepared to pay for the group knowing that they would do the same for you. Reaching to collect your gold, you realized that your satchel was missing.
Another Vox Machina plan was about to explode in their drunken faces.
“Where the hell is my money?” you speak aloud even though the question was just you verbalizing your thought process. You remember having it on you when you sat down, but you had no idea where it had gone.
“Maybe you left it in your room,” Vax said, leaning on the table, while he messed with the rim of the cup of ale, “it would make sense since you have never had to prepare for anything in your life.”
Your face hardened into one of annoyance. “You took it, didn’t you?” you accused him immediately, “you stole my shit again.”
“I’ve never stolen any of your shit, your majesty,” Vax’s monotonous sarcasm left you livid.
“We met because you stole my shit, jackass,” you replied, crossing your arms.
“I took your necklace, I didn’t steal it. Stealing it would imply that you never got it back,” Vax huffed out in response.
“You still stole it, and the only reason I got it back was because I caught you with it.”
“Well, I didn’t steal your stupid fucking satchel, so stop being a priss about this and recognize the fact that you fucking misplaced it.” Vax stood up suddenly and exited the tavern to make his way up to one of the many rooms you had all bought out for the week. You simply rolled your eyes at the half-elf, not caring about his disappearance from the table. The only others missing from their seats were Scanlan and Grog. You searched around the bar for them. It wasn’t too hard because Grog’s voice boomed compared to others in the room. You found the two sitting together in the corner of the tavern.
“Y/n,” Scanlan said drunkenly, “you-you need to tell Grog that I’m right.” The gnome swayed back and forth.
“No, Y/n, tell Scanlan, that I’m right,” Grog pouted at you.
“What are you guys trying to determine?”
“Grog over here,” Scanlan points to the goliath, “thinks that you and Vax hate each other’s guts for realsies. I think that you have sexual tension leading you two to always be at each other’s throats.”
“No, Scanlan, Grog is right, I honestly just dislike Vax and vice versa. Trust me, there is absolutely no sexual tension between us.”
“Please, you could cut it with a knife,” Scanlan jokes as his head bobbles from side to side.
“I could cut you with a knife,” you stated without care.
“Okay, okay,” the gnome held up his hands in surrender.
“Ha, pay up my small friend,” Grog boasted.
“Fine,” Scanlan said defeatedly, “here is your well-deserved bag of shiny things.” Scanlan threw your pouch of money and other small valuables onto the table.
“Shit, Scanlan, that’s mine,” You said suddenly, realizing your mistake.
“That’s yours? No, that can’t be right. It was right beside me. I just had to untie it from-,” Scanlan stopped speaking for a few moments. “Oops, it was yours. Sorry, Y/n, please do not attack me. I swear it was a mistake.”
“Just give me my damn money,” I snatched the satchel and tossed out some gold, “pay for the damn drinks you’ve had and go to bed.” The two looked saddened after you scolded them. You on the other hand were unhappy with what you needed to do next.
You walked upstairs to the rooms you were all staying in and knocked on the one Vax was sharing with Percy.
“It’s unlocked,” Vax replied. You opened the door and made your way into the room. Vax was lying down on one of the two beds tossing a coin in the air. He looked over to see who had entered, “Oh, it’s you,” Vax stated with distaste.
“I’m here to apologize,” you told him.
“Well, I’m glad that you’ve come to terms with the fact that you misplaced it,” he responded, nodding to the pouch in your hand.
“Actually,” you said, moving further into the room, sitting on the bed beside Vax’s, “Scanlan took it, so I was only half wrong, which is why I’m apologizing. I’m sorry for accusing you of taking my satchel.”
“Scanlan took it?” Vax raised a brow at you.
“Yeah,” you chuckled, “guess he was drunk enough to not even realize it was mine in the first place.”
“Wow, he really had too much didn’t he?”
“Eh, it’s not entirely his fault,” you shrugged, “I gave him like half of my drinks and he didn't even notice.”
Vax laughed, “I did the same with Grog. I didn’t want to end up passed out drunk so I may have switched our cups a few times.” Now you both laughed at your actions.
“Hopefully they’ll be okay,” you spoke up, “They both seemed pretty out of it when I caught Scanlan. The little guy didn’t even have his head on straight, honestly.”
“I’m sure they’ll be fine. I would have liked to see Scanlan that drunk.”
“Yeah, well, it wasn’t as great as you would think. You didn’t miss out on anything.”
“Well that’s good I guess.”
“I’ll leave you to it. It would probably be best that we get some rest before the others become sober again but with massive hangovers,” you stood up from your seat.
“Yeah, Scanlan and Vex always complain about their damn headaches. Sleep well, L/n.”
“Sleep well,” you replied, leaving the room and closing the door behind you.
The two of you helped the others in the morning. Scanlan and Grog had no memories from the night before while the others had bits and pieces. It was odd for all of them to see you and Vax working together to take care of them without fighting.
From then on, you and Vax were civil with each other. You were almost like coworkers in a sense. You weren’t close but the majority of the time you didn’t actively hate the other.
In fact, you practically stopped fighting each other entirely. Instead, you moved on to aiding one another in battle, fighting side by side, and even protecting each other. You shared drinks over your victories too, leaving the group thankful and very confused. They had no idea what happened between the two of you but also didn’t think that it had anything to do with their last plan.
With time you and Vax even grew closer, becoming friendly. A certain mission Vox Machina took should have weakened the beginning of your friendship but in the end, only made it stronger.
Trapped in the cavern you and Vax were forced to wait out a rescue from your friends and colleagues. You two were stuck because part of the cave collapsed leaving you both stuck in the dark, alone, together.
Claustrophobia got the better of the both of you and you both slowly started to lose your cool. It began with blaming one another for the situation. You both still had enough sense in you to walk away from that conversation. Then you both brought up that none of the others would have made these stupid mistakes. Eventually, you both stopped because exhaustion was getting to you. Finally, it came down to blaming each other because you both disliked each other and couldn’t handle being around each other.
He screamed and you screamed and things were said.
“You're a fucking coward that steals from unknowing and innocent people.”
“Oh my lord, you’re still upset about your damn necklace. You're so pretentious.”
“Me! I’m pretentious? Have you not met Percy or looked in a fucking mirror?”
“Oh wow when’d you come up with that one? And you know what, at least Percy knows he’s got a stick up his ass. You act like your fucking perfect all the fucking time. Well, you're not! You aren’t fucking perfect.”
“Well, at least I’m not a low-life thief. At least I’m not you. Your whole entire get-up is built on lies and deceptions. You commit crimes like it’s fucking breathing. And I am so sorry I don’t like the fact that you steal from people, but how could I? Everything I’ve ever had has been stolen from me! Even this necklace,” you took it from your neck, “you had this, you took it, you stole it. I had to fight tooth and nail to get it back. But you wanted it so bad that you stole it from me. You took all I had left. So you know what, if you want it so bad you can fucking have it. They took all I had, so why don’t you take all I have left.” You threw it at his feet.
You breathed heavy, exhausted from all the screaming you’d done. Your back leaned against the wall behind you and you slid down to the floor. Vax looked taken aback while you were trying to control your breathing. The half-elf picked your necklace off the ground. He approached you slowly and carefully placed a hand on your shoulder.
“I’m sorry. I realize I’ve never apologized for taking your necklace. I don’t necessarily understand its importance to you, but it clearly is and I should never have done what I did.”
“I-,” you huffed out, trying to figure out what you wanted to say, “It’s not your fault entirely. I’m just projecting the larger picture onto you. I’m sorry for that and um, also you're forgiven.”
“Well, I’m glad. Maybe now we can finally get off on the right foot. Once we get out of here that is.”
“Yeah, It’s going to take the others a bit longer to get to us,” you admitted.
“So, want to share the troubles you were somewhat projecting onto me?” he asked, before quickly swiveling his head your way, “only if you want to of course.”
“Eh, this would be easier with alcohol.”
“Sadly, I’m lacking when it comes to those types of beverages, I only have water,” he tried to joke.
“That’s fine,” you said, reaching into your chest pocket and pulling out a metal flask, “I was just trying to lighten the mood anyway.”
You took a gulp of the liquor you had stored before handing it over to Vax. “You are full of surprises,” he chuckled before taking a swig. Vax handed the liquid courage back to you. You took one last sip before opening up.
“My shitty cousin cut me out of the inheritance,” you looked Vax dead in the eye, “and, I know, I know that makes me sound like a spoiled little brat, but that was like my whole life and I had only just turned seventeen. I was supposed to take over the family business and continue with the position my family had raised me to take care of and she just came in and snatched it from my hands on a technicality, a fucking technicality. The nerve on that woman? And I mean she was only 19 at the time but she was like an older sister to me. Especially when her family took me in after my parents died. I don’t know, she just uprooted my whole life, betrayed me, disowned me, kicked me out of my own home, and she didn’t even give me a cent because I threatened her.”
“Wow, seems like a dick move,” the alcohol had kicked in enough for you to know he was being genuine.
“Right? She stole everything from me.”
“Everything but your necklace,” Vax held it out for both of you to see.
“Yes,” you hit his arm playfully, “everything but my grandmother’s necklace.”
“It’s a very pretty necklace,” he told you as he examined it.
“My grandmother loved fine pieces of jewelry. She never cared about the price or the materials used as long as the piece was one of quality work,” you said with a slight frown on your face, “I never could sell it, too much sentimental value.”
“Well, it's a good thing it means so much to you. Otherwise, you would never have joined Vox Machina and in all honesty, we need someone like you.”
“What, pretentious, spoiled, and witty?” you asked jokingly.
“No, mature, honest, morally respectable, and witty.”
“I find it sweet that you find me morally respectable,” you said.
“Well, I find you sweet in general,” he said back, looking you in the eye, a small smile gracing his face. “Here,” he scooted back, bringing the necklace to your neck, “you should put this back on, wouldn’t want anyone taking it again.” Vax clasped the piece of jewelry around your neck.
“Thanks.”
“No problem,” he replied, returning to his original spot beside you. You sat like that for another three hours before the others found you.
They were all thankful that when they got there that one of you wasn’t standing over a dead body. They expected you to be at each other’s throats and even attempting to end the other. You two sitting peacefully, shoulder to shoulder was quite honestly shocking for them.
You and Vax were very different after that. Scanlan assumed that the boredom, frustration, and, apparently, sexual tension led you to bone. Pike believed that the two of you made up during the stressful and life-threatening situation because petty rivalries as grudges were stupid and noticeable in the face of mortality. Vex, Percy, and Keyleth felt you both were secretly harboring feelings for each other and didn’t actually hate each other. Lastly, Grog felt the two of you got the air cleared and let the anger out of your systems finally allowing for the two of you to become friends.
It surprised you both that Grog was the closest to actually figuring out what happened the day the cavern caved in. You even swore him to secrecy with a pinky promise whilst the group was drunk. The goliath sealed his lips performing the customary thin-lipped smile, the shut of a zipper, and the toss of a key.
You and Vax remained good friends that finally understood one another. In fact, the difficulties you both faced involving your families brought you closer together. The rest of Vox Machina remained shocked at your’s and Vax’s odd behavior. The small giggles between the two of you. The bumping of shoulders either as a joke or to signal something. The whispered secrets that no one else knew.
It wasn’t hard for the two of you to become anything more than friends.
Your entire group was split up in the woods while fighting werewolves. You and Vax had managed to stick at each other’s side. The two of you are always in some sort of physical contact so as not to lose the other. His hand grasped yours as you ran away in the dark of the night.
“Fuck,” Vax muttered under his breath as you two swiftly made your way through the forest. Trees blurred as you ran in the pale moonlight carelessly. The snatched the cloth of your cloak pulling you back and out of his grasp.
“Shit, shit, Vax,” you cried out, scared, terrified. The growls approached you from behind. You tugged at the loose fabric hoping it would tear. The two wolves crept up behind you as you pulled. You looked over your shoulder and back at what you were doing, twisting the fabric in your hands.
Twin snarls came from behind you, and the beady eyes of the werewolves stared directly at you. You no longer had time to pull at your cloak. You grabbed the part scrunched at your neck and pulled it over your head as quickly as you could to make it out so you could run again. The one on the right lunged for you, but a dagger quickly found itself lodged into the beast’s skull. The second one ran toward you as soon as you escaped your cloak. You wrapped the fabric that had kept you stuck around the beast, grappling it to the ground. It roared out, clamping its jaw in the air as you swiftly swung your own dagger into the base of the monster’s head.
You were pulled off the body that was now turning back into a human. Arms wrapped around you, tugging you into their arms.
“It’s okay, I’ve got you it’s okay,” Vax whispered softly into your hair.
You turned around engulfing the half-elf in a desperate hug. He returned the gesture of affection just as distressed as you. “Vax,” you sobbed quietly into his shoulder.
“I’m right here, love,” he stroked your hair with care. You nuzzled your face into his neck as you both sat under the light of a full moon.
You pulled away just enough to look him in the face, your hand splayed on his chest to keep your balance. His eyes looked at you with concern, but all you could do was place your other hand on his cheek unaware of how the light made it look like your tears were liquid silver. “Are you alright?” he asked, letting out a ragged breath, no longer sounding like his emotions were under control.
“I’m okay, I’m okay,” you assured him, “you saved me.”
“Well, darling,” his charm came back, masking only some of his worry, “I don’t deserve all the credit, you also saved yourself.”
“Ha, I suppose that is also true. I-“ you looked back up at him, “thank you.”
“Trust me, it’s nothing to thank me for,” he copied you, placing one hand on your cheek.
“No, thank you for this,” you gestured to the position you were in.
“Of course, I’ll always be here for you,” he said, his face dipping closer to yours.
“I know,” you placed your forehead against his, “I’ll always be there for you too.”
“I know,” Vax replied with his eyes closed, your breath dancing along his face.
It was slow, simple, and comforting when your lips met. The brush of your lips wasn’t fireworks at the moment, but a warm fire that reminded you both of a home you were deprived of. Vax could taste what remained of your tears on his tongue, which had gracefully entered your mouth for a few seconds before the two of you slowly drifted apart.
It was still nighttime and the woods were not safe. The two of you stood up together and went to find shelter. Finding a small eroded rock, Vax sat down and leaned against it while you laid on his chest covered by his cloak that he was sharing to stop the cold from reaching you.
Vox Machina was reunited by noon the next day. No one in the group knew what had happened with you that night. But everyone could tell something had changed between the two of you again.
And things did change between you and Vax. You snuck around, held hands in secret, and avoided the gazes of your friends. You went on small little dates without anyone else knowing. You shared bread, roamed the roads of towns, and walked hand in hand in the forests.
Escaping from prying eyes allowed the two of you to get quick, short moments together of brief contact and chaste kisses.
With time you both leaned into your relationship more, realizing that you wanted something real and known. You cupped his face when he was down. He wiped away your tears if you broke from the stress you were facing. You covered for each other. Protected one another from others showing both your caring and violent sides.
It began with small quick pecks on the cheek, palms, knuckles, nose, forehead, or the top of the head. Each of you did something to comfort the other. It was sweet and calming for both of you to both receive and provide such affection.
With more time it evolved to constant hand holding and actual kissing before leaving one another, or after a long day. The rest of Vox Machina would have been more surprised, but your relationship with Vax was just naturally evolving with both of you. Whatever happened next just seemed to make logical sense in your relationship.
Vax was moving on from his past and traumas and you were doing the same. You found comfort in what started as uncomfortable and even unwanted. Vax had learned restraint with some of his actions while you learned to be more impulsive and to not always wait and think things over.
You were good for each other, which was obvious to all of Vox Machina. While they never quite knew how your relationship was changing, they were always out of the loop of something. The most recent being the small and beautiful ‘I love you’s shared between you both. The growing smiles forming on your faces with each word of reassurance and promise.
Though none of Vox Machina knew of your most recent advancement of your two’s relationship, they knew how you both felt toward one another.
It was especially clear in both your actions. Your most recent bounty led you to a decent-sized town. The people were odd and quite a few were rude, but just as many were nice. What people did not enjoy was your group of mercenaries looking into their businesses and homes.
In fact, one merchant had pissed you off enough that you decided to let off some steam. Glancing down at it then you knew you held no regret for your actions. Covering the small object in cloth, you weaved your way through the crowds of people. Finding Vax and the others was easy enough.
You held out the cloth, unraveling it and revealing its contents. In your hand rested a small silver knife with intricate pattern work on the handle, reminding you of a forest. Vax looked from you to the object in your hand.
“I-It’s a lovely knife, my dear, but I’m afraid I’m not quite following,” Vax’s voice was sweet when he talked to you, but his confusion was also clear.
“I stole it,” you said simply with a small smile-ish smirk and a shrug of your shoulders.
“What?” The half-elf questioned your actions, not with anger but with concern and the same confusion.
“It looked cool, but it was terribly overpriced and the merchant was extremely rude, I mean extremely rude, so I stole it,” your answer was short and precise, but the sheer joy that radiated off of you was enthralling. You were proud of your accomplishment.
“Okay, and…” Vax continued, trying to lead the conversation in a way that you would provide more explanation.
“And it is a gift, so accept my gift,” you told Vax. His face softened as he looked down at the blade you were wanting to give him. The two of you truly had come so far since the start.
“Got it,” he said, grabbing the small knife from your hand, “thank you.”
“Of course, darling,” you said back then kissed his cheek and returned to the group. Vax was entirely whipped for you. You loved each other. Everyone knew it. It was love after a couple of dozen fights.
