For anyone else trying to Not be chronically online...

i watched a video (by lrnjulie) the other day and i'm thinking of doing some digital minimalism and only having:

from now on. here's why...

i think it'd be beneficial for me as an artist to detox from being /so/ influenced by other people's styles and what other artists are doing (generally). so anyways here's why i'd keep those 3 specifically and nothing else:

tumblr - blogging with text AND images feels healthier than most social media, imo (there's twitter but i'm A. not on it and B. have only heard toxic things). like a public diary and brain dump all at once. also the ability to block tags is really nice, and i can better choose what to/what not to engage with. and bc im primarily on mobile, i can set time limits so im not on here *all* the time. i need somewhere to high post tho & most importantly, a special interest of mine is fandoms, and tumblr is THEE fandom website where I can engage w my interests. also my friend's in there (^:

youtube - i have dissociation and, along with other methods of helping with it, i think it'd be neat to document my life and put it on a platform. also another place to share my special interests in video format! and my art (:

website - my "long term project" as lrnjulie calls it. a place for my portfolio and my art/writing/creative stuff. might even incorporating blogging into here, and definitely a place to put my shop

so that's the triumvirate i'm gonna try out, at least for now. i'm not sure i'll always be off social media, but i think i need to be for at least a while for my mental health. i once took a yearlong break off tiktok and my life was so much better then, i was less in my head and went out more. so, i'm sharing in case anyone else who struggles with mental health/anxiety is wanting to do the same. maybe we can do it together? i'll keep a tag for updates if anyone is interested in my progress or following along: #detoxinitiative2024 but yeah, i figured it was worth sharing (:

I love the college of winterhold. everyone there is casually deranged and there's like an alarming number of students and staff who threaten you immediately when they meet you. it's always one of the first questlines I do. which makes it even funnier when you get made the arch-mage of the college. I'm level 12 and got through this questline knowing exactly 3 spells. what do you mean you want me to lead the college. this school CANNOT be an accredited institution

Hey, I wanted to say I really love your takes on Borderlands, particularly with Nisha and her relationship with Jack. I wanted to get your thoughts on that particular line in the DLC where Jack said it's always me doing all the work and she goes I've said that before. I've noticed some fans tend to take that joke seriously and I thought of it as a light-hearted joke between those two. What are your thoughts?

hmm...I feel like there are several layers to this? Or at least, from what we know and don't know about their relationship, there are different possible interpretations of it.

(Like, I wrote one Nisha/Jack fic where this definitely was the case ...but in fairness that was also right after Jack got the vault-symbol punched in his face so-)

I think one very simple layer of this is that Nisha just very consistently likes to poke fun at Jack. We see a lot of that in Borderlands 2. Which is really an aspect of her personality - she likes to make jabs at other people. So yeah, obviously if he says something like that and she has a good comeback, she's not going to let that slide.

And on a deeper level of that: I think it's important to keep in mind that Jack and Nisha are both very dangerous people with extreme trust issues. Who somehow try to make a relationship work. And on the one hand, it makes sense that these two would get on like a house on fire. But on the other hand, it's kind of an undertaking that relies on a LOT of mutual understanding and trust. For that relationship to work, these two people, who are in the eyes of everyone else (except maybe Wilhelm who doesn't care) a duo of sadistic hypocrites, need to find a way to integrate each other into their very self-centred worldview. Their entire modus operandi is to apply rules to others that they don't apply to themselves - or to one another. And I think their banter is (on a subconscious level) one way of confirming "hey, things are good, we're having fun, I'm happy in this relationship, I still care about you" without ever being forced to be deep about this.

This is something that we also get a lot with Nisha: When Nisha says mean stuff about people, there is often a wide difference in quality. It makes a huge difference whether you are her friend that she wants to poke fun at, some idiot NPC that she considers below her notice, someone she just happens to dislike for her own reasons (like Moxxi in the beginning of TPS) or someone she has a sincere vendetta against (like Lilith and Moxxi at the end of TPS). What really sets all of these apart is the tone and the way in which she says those rude things. And whether she makes threats. That's why Nisha engaging in friendly banter with Jack is a pretty important aspect of their communication.

Another aspect I think is that Nisha and Jack are very performative people. Like, one of them puts up golden statues, and the other one larps as a western Sheriff. And while I think there are slightly different reasons for this (I think Jack buys more into his image or at least...depends more on it to feel good about his more monstrous side. While Nisha's more chill side seems a lot more authentic and more "two parts of the same coin" rather than "mask"), I also think that their relationship and especially THEIR ability to get along and THEIR ability to take criticism from one another and THEIR ability to understand each other's...pretty impenetrable moral code is something that they can have a lot of fun with. Because now they can project out at the world: "See how perfectly we reasonable we are? We are sure getting along. We don't understand why you all insist on not simply getting with the very evident and not-at-all-murderouly-hypocritical programme."

Now, I think the big question for a lot of people in the fandom is: How much (does it?) reflect on their actual sex life.

And ...without much contex about their actual relationship, I think there are several interpretations are possible:

Nisha literally just says it to be funny. As in, she just thought it was a funny moment to say that line. Like a "yo mama" joke.

The joke is that Nisha said it before in a different context that the Vault Hunters know about. e.g. the fact that Jack rarely accompanies them to their mission.

Or it is indeed a comment on their sex life. The thing is, I feel like the insinuation has always been that their sex life is pretty damn good. I think there is even a confirmation of that from Anthony Burch himself but I cannot be bothered to look for it - really, my reasoning is that Nisha is presented as a very sexual person and these two are often presented as very much on the same wavelength sexually. Quite frankly, I don't think Nisha would stay if she was genuinely unhappy with their sex life. A possible interpretation I do see is that they are both Nisha very canonically, Jack frequently implied, switches. So I think if we were to take the comment at face value and assume that a) she really "said that before and b) it was about sex - I would interpret it as "she has been playing the dominant part a lot lately"

#I could swear it said somewhere that Jack and Nisha actually have the best sex life in Borderlands but I'm not sure where #and the waybach machine for Anthony Burch's Ask FM is very sporadic (his own account is restricted without an account fml)#and I'm not even sure that a) he said that and b) he said it there #Nisha Kadam #Handsome Jack #Borderlands #fandom #this reminds me of that reddit AMA where someone asked why Jack's glove is missing some fingers #and his response was: Ask Nisha #and then a lot of people were like: oh yeah he means that she taught him that this is more useful for shooting with a revolver :)

I really do hope the devs for Rune Factory never come out and say which of the bachelors/bachelorettes from RF4 is the one they consider canon.

I haven't played RF1/2/3 but I know about all the hate Mist, Mana, and Shara got from the fandom simply for being pushed as the canon bachelorettes of their respective games (especially Shara now that RF3S's Western release is so close) and the idea of that happening to any of the RF4 candidates is not fun. The same goes for RF5.

How do you read all the daily posts of all the people you follow? Or should that basically be accepted as impossible? Do you catch up? Or do you just read whatever tumblr throws at you first?

I ask you because you were the first actual blog I followed on here and you led me to a lot of great people and now I’m struggling to read all the posts they make.

How I do it is I only follow like 30 people, a lot of which very rarely post. Every day when I wake up I scroll tumblr till I’m satisfied. I make sure to prioritise mutuals, if I haven’t gotten to the point where I left off, I go through my favourite mutuals’ blogs to make sure I haven’t missed anything (y’all are really cool). You shouldn’t treat tumblr like a game with daily challenges, because then it’ll just become a chore. And I know fomo is a very real thing, and I’m here to assure you that it’s okay, I swear it doesn’t matter, and if you interact with people that are online now instead of when you were asleep, you’ll have a lot more fun. Lurking is completely valid, but I couldn’t bear to keep quiet. This hellsite is a collaborative medium, interacting with others is most of my enjoyment. I don’t follow many people for their blog, I mainly just follow people I like talking to and the odd art account or niche blog that REALLY spoke to me.

I’m so glad that you liked the people that I like!!! I try to make sure to only be mutuals with people that I genuinely really like talking with (if I interact with you and don’t follow you back, I probably just forgot to lmao), so that probably means I have good taste hehehehe

So, in conclusion, I use my probably-adhd-or-autism powers to scroll through my dashboard in one sitting every morning, check frequently throughout the day, and if I’m bored I use the for you page to find some thing I might like. Sometimes it’s useless but sometimes it can be really really good, like when it showed me all those Noelle x Susie posts lmao. I make sure to use the app more like a messaging social media than a content social media, with the odd meme or heritage post sprinkled in.

And the most important thing: have fun! The hardest part of tumblr is that initial hill where you don’t follow enough people to enjoy yourself, but once you’ve found your group/blogs then you can go a long while without follow anyone new, and still enjoy yourself! I’d recommend to not follow TOO many people, because then you’d be missing the posts of the people you care about. Your dashboard is like a garden, tend to it!!!

Revenant is soooo mid which is disappointing because I was looking forward to it due to the actors and writer (this isn’t a flop like Jirisan, which I gave up on after 2–3 episodes, but it’s not really good). BUT. BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’m suffering from “poor little meow meow middle-aged man” deficiency and Professor Yeom Haesang suffers so much. I can’t believe I was like “Oh...okay” about his casting because I’m planting my palms against his windows, peering at him in his little cage and being fed because he’s had the worst life ever and it keeps getting worse. HAESANG *____*<3

#why are we not talking about him more on reddit/twitter/tumblr and why are there not enough gifs and pics of him breaking down #or looking slutty in his all black ensembles complete with a turtleneck #watch as this man's life continues to deteriorate! ep. 7 and 8 provided such rich sustenance for me #a simp for ajusshideul who are miserable #he's so small and sad and he can't catch a break #yeah okay hongsae is great too and he's a cutie but LOOK AT THIS 40-YEAR-OLD MAN!#technically i wouldn't even count that as MIDDLE age middle-aged but his actor is 46 so whatever #in all seriousness revenant exasperates me a little because you can see how it can be good #especially because there's a frame of reference to base that hypothesis on: signal. lol.#signal wasn't without its flaws but the characters and relationships actually had development and the main partnerships were intense #and the tension was high throughout #revenant is the same thing every episode pretty much #the first three episodes were pretty to really good and i loved the setup #and you have kim taeri hong kyung and oh jungsae and they're great actors #but the directing and writing aren't serving them well and you can see the drop in quality from the beginning to now tbh #there's only so much they can do if they're not being given enough from both #though the little bits that are good are the reason i'm sticking around to the end lol. that and haesang i'm going to be real #like haesang and sanyoung's relationship needed to be parallel soohyun and haeyoung's in a way in terms of how much #they grow to rely on each other and care for each other but we don't really get that
