Thanks for hearing me out there, I really needed all of that. I think your blog (as well as other tumblr blogs in general like kaiju-krew) help keep me sane while witnessing all sorts of really dumb takes from the fandom, especially from the likes of Twitter and Reddit. The worst takes I've seen so far are the ones that claim that unlike Kong, if Godzilla ever encounters another one of his kind, he would kill them just for disrupting his nap and/or harm a baby of his kind because he's a reptile and something something "alphas in nature kill offspring that isn't their own to prevent competition" and junk like that.

It just really sucks to see them humanize Kong (and in many cases, turn him into a literal saint) while at the same time, reducing Godzilla to just a dumb animal when they're both intelligent and sympathetic but flawed individuals.

Also your comparisons of MV Godzilla to Doomguy and cats is very on-point. All three of them may look and act prickly at first, but there's more to them than just that and if you actually take your time to look past that and get to know them better while respecting their space, they're actually not bad at all. And in the case of both Godzilla and cats, it's kind of like intruding into an introvert's personal space and acting constantly annoying to them, and then getting mad and calling them a jerk once they show signs of wanting you to leave them alone.

(About Matt Frank's post, I took another look at it and he deleted the initial post, probably because of all the backlash he got from it since he misunderstood MV Godzilla's character hard. And in case you're curious on what the post said, it's something on the lines of something like "It's great that MV Godzilla is just an aggro jerkface in the whole movie (GxK) for NO reason at all and I'm all for it").

(That said, his follow-up replies to that are still there and they're still not the best takes. Here they are, for anyone who doesn't have access to that hellish site.)

Yeeeep, this is why I stay as much as possible away from the Twitter and especially the fandom side of Reddit; in fact, there are very specific reasons I would venture into those lawless depths: Check if anyone else has run into a game bug I've encountered and any workarounds for it, or fun gifs I just happened to spy on a Google Image search.

And you know, maybe it's because I just woke up, but to those who demonize Godzilla, I'm about to do something fuckin' hilarious with my power as a fic writer with my own canon at my fingertips. Check this shit out: In an AbraxasVerse take of GxK, when Godzilla is napping in the Colosseum and the authorities are like "what the fuck do we do," who rolls up but THE ACTUAL POPE to welcome the giant napping Nukasaurus Rex and be like "This is a beast of god who protects our world. I talked about this the last time he saved us, did you not listen to my sermon last Mass? For shame. Let the noble beast rest. Amen." Not in those exact words, but yeah.

Oh yeah, @thebeastunleashed showed the the tweets on Discord. Matt, I respect ya as a phenomenal kaiju artist and you're entitled to which Goji's your favorite and also your opinion, but sometimes it's okay to be wrong. (Incidentally, my favorite Godzillas are Heisei and MonsterVerse so I happen to prefer a Godzilla with a soft side.)

Gina Carano Sues Disney and Lucasfilm. According to Just Some Guy at 1 : 36 of the youtube video. Gina Carano was the one who put gasoline into the fire herself by intentionally starting a fight with trans people and mocking them for their importance in society.

I was sick the day the happened and @jennadknowsbest-blog was kind enough to tell me and boy let me tell you, despite feeling like crap I was laughing like this allllllll day

If you too need a good laugh, read the released document thingy. It's badly written on so many levels. (I saw it on Reddit but I think it's floating around Tumblr too. There are some golden comments on both.) Both from just a writing style perspective (it's written like a teenager's Star Wars fanfic) and the fact that her main argument is that "Pedro Pascal said mean things about conservatives and wasn't punished" when 1. most of the posts were apparently before he was hired as the Mandalorian and 2. it seems like pretty common knowledge in fandom that he was asked to tone it down and he did. I follow him on Insta and he rarely posts outside of promoting his own work, and it's largely "support this cause" or "I love my trans sister" instead of attacking/joking at anyone. (I guess his Twitter had more comments, but he's since deleted it afaik.) Overall, it's likely just a stunt to get the right-wing frothing at the mouth and Gina's name back in people's mouth, because she hasn't filmed anything since Terror on the Prairie (one of two Daily Wire films she was supposed to have, the other appears to not be happening anymore) and My Son Hunter (which was straight Breitbart propaganda). Shatpiro has used and dumped her and while I doubt she's hurting for money, I bet she's desperate to get the praise and attention and adoration that the Cara Dune role briefly brought her. Why else would she come crawling back to a company she's publicly trashed and accused of mistreating for the last several years? It doesn't make sense by her own logic! If they were so bad, why does she want back? (And who's gonna hire her now if they think she's a liability who's going to turn around and sue them?)

It's really disgusting though that Gina wants to claim she was discriminated against for being a woman while actively mocking minority groups. Her post appeared on my Insta fyp and I usually don't click because I know she's gonna piss me off, and I clicked and she did. At the time she had a story that said "Still beeping, bopping, booping" with a smirky picture of her. So all she's been told - we know Pedro talked to her because she herself admitted it on Twitter*, and while I'm sure there were plenty of people jumping on the hate bandwagon, there were also people trying to genuinely explain - and explained how this is hurtful to the queer community, she still keeps doing it and thinks it's funny.

That's what's unforgivable to me. Not that she said ignorant shit in the first place - we all have - but her refusal to learn and do better. She wants to say whatever she wants without pushback and so do her fans. The few times I've thought it's worth it to try and talk to someone about it, they always insist it's just her opinion and say something homophobic to me as well (last time I talked to a Cara Dune content creator on Insta, she said she "doesn't agree" with me being gay and "I can't expect everyone to agree with me." For wanting to exist as a gay person. Apparently I should just take it when people mock me or say I should burn in hell.) That's the problem with Gina and her supporters. They don't care, they don't want to think critically or debate, they want to say anything they want without consequence and brush off any conflict with "well it's just a joke" or "it's just her opinion."

Bigotry is not an opinion. You can't "not agree" with someone's skin color and it's the same with their sexuality. You don't get a fucking opinion on whether I have the right to exist as a queer woman.

Let's not pretend the things Gina says are in a void. People who flock to her believe the same things she does. That's why people have protested her attending FanExpo (this video goes into more depth thank you @jennadknowsbest-blog for sharing), when you invite people who, like her, think it's funny to mock anyone like them, it doesn't make a safe or welcoming environment for people like me. Sure one can brush off a comment or two - but where do you draw the line? When does it become harassment? And who is going to protect people like me from that harassment? How can I count on security from an organization that invited Gina and encouraged these people in the first place?

And I say all this as a queer woman who is able to chameleon myself very well because I've done it since childhood. Things are only getting more dangerous for people who are visibly queer. A nonbinary teen was just killed in Oklahoma. I live in a relatively blue area of a blue state, but that doesn't mean I'm completely safe. There are extremists out there, and they're only getting more bold - because people like Gina think it's amusing to fan the flames. Gina, at least, has faced some consequences for it. I doubt this lawsuit will go anywhere (either it'll be settled and Elon and Gina have some Own The Libs content, or they'll be dismissed/lose and they'll get some A Woke Judge Discriminated Against Me content). Gina will be happily on her way. Meanwhile, I get to wonder if the people around me who dismissively say "it's just her opinion" are the kind of people who don't think much about social issues.... or are the kind of people who will happily vote my rights away in the next election.

I assure you, if you have friends who are queer, they are listening to what you say about this case. Throughout all her tomfoolery, I've found Gina to be an excellent canary in the coal mine when it comes to identifying homophobes.

*She apparently later told Tucker Carlson that no one bothered to explain the pronouns thing to her, so we know she's a liar who twists the story as well, which is why I never take anything she says in good faith.**

She's like the inverse of a blorbo to me, like she pisses me off but she compels me. How can one person be this dumb. (Fr tho has anyone in her life talked to her about CTE??? I'm curious as to how much flack Percy gets in regards to his x-force and wolverine run.

This cap doesn't have anything to do with anything, I just find it funny.

So, in regards to Percy's writing of X-Force and Wolverine, I'm going mostly based off of Reddit and Tumblr for these general impressions, because these are the social networks I spend the most time on - minus Twitter, but Twitter is frankly always a cesspool, and people don't actually talk that much about X-Force or Wolverine on there, they talk primarily about X-Ladies.

Reddit actually just wrapped up a poll asking people to rank their least favourite Krakoa era books, and the results were. Interesting.

So, Immortal X-Men was voted the best, with Hellions and X-Men Red trailing in second and third place - well deserved, frankly, those are all really quite excellent books. But we're not here to talk about excellent books, we're here to talk about Ben Percy!

Both of Ben Percy's comics were ranked as being in the bottom third of all Krakoa era comics (not including mini series). That's. Not great, honestly. That's usually what you'd call an indicator of a not well loved comic book.

Now, that's not to say that these runs don't have their appreciators - for one thing, they are objectively drawn pretty much consistently gorgeously. For all the flack I personally give Percy, he is competent at creating interesting body horror situations. There's a firm fanbase that's quite invested in Omega Red's redemption arc.

But I don't think there are many people who actually love these comics.

For one thing, the pacing is glacial. They are the single longest running ongoings of the Krakoan era, bar none, both of them looking to hit #50 in an era where other series are getting cancelled or cut short at #10 or #18 - and they have only just started to wrap up their major plot points. Beast was established to be pure evil back in issue #9, and it took until Wolverine #35 for him to be acted upon in a meaningful manner. Colossus was established to be under mind control years ago, also, and that has only JUST NOW been resolved.

A common response to this criticism was that Ben Percy is a novelist, and therefore used to writing his stories in a certain format - to which I say, cool, but you're writing for comic books, motherfucker. Adapt your style. I don't turn up to a watercolour painting class with a can of spray paint.

Another point people like to bring up is that Percy got 'screwed' by the higher ups extending the Krakoan story arc due to Hickman leaving and the other X-writers deciding to stick around in this stage of the story for longer. The theory goes that he has a set end point, and he's had to stretch the story out to make it work.

To which I say, if he's had even more time than he was meant to have, why do we know less psychologically about Beast now than we did at the beginning of the series? Why are Sage and Omega Red and Domino all begging for table scraps of story? What the fuck was even the point of the Kraven arc? A good writer who is interested in their characters and what they can say about them relishes more time to have them talk, not less, especially if you're getting paid to write it.

How in the goddamn hell did we have a company wide crossover event featuring a godlike being that forced characters to be judged for their actions, motivations and philosophies, and we didn't hear a single thing about Beast or Omega Red?

You could also just? End the story? Would the world really be that much of a poorer place without the adamantium surfboard and the evil space Nazi prison that literally mattered so little that Beast got arrested for it, then turned up again next issue like nothing had happened?

Which leads me to my next point - Beast's descent into villainy, whether or not you think it makes sense with how the character has been treated this last decade, does not make a fucking lick of sense. Everyone on the goddamn island of Krakoa is a fucking moron because X-Force is happening and no-one is watching what obviously evil Bond villain Beast is doing.

Jean Grey is staring Beast in the face, telling him that she believes that she thinks there's still good in him, while he's mentally thinking about what dead animal carcass to throw to Wolverine to break his mind and spirit. SHE IS A FUCKING TELEPATH.

MAKE IT MAKE SENSE.

Nightcrawler says Beast is utterly unethical and he doesn't trust him. Won't talk to him, though. Or check in on him. Or act against him. Beast was running an evil space Nazi prison in orbit, got caught, got taken away in handcuffs, and just. Walks. Away. Scot free.

I don't know, but we'll never see it!

And every time you bring these things up, even the X-Force defenders just kinda have to shrug their shoulders and go, look, dude, I'm just here for the rad art and to watch how far Beast is gonna go this issue. Every other run during this era makes a grand effort to be connected, for Krakoa to feel like a breathing, living island . . . except for X-Force and Wolverine. They all just kinda. Exist in their own little universe.

It's called the Percyverse, incidentally. Legitimately. There's a full on term for it, this effect is so well documented and has been an issue for so long.

So, on Reddit at least, there's a pretty common derision for these runs. Some defenders, but no-one is ever gonna say that they're their favourites of the era. Most people are just kinda like, ehh, it's fun pulp, don't think too hard about it.

On Tumblr . . . yeah, this is something I actually have some personal experience with. You see a lot of X-Force panels posted from major comic book blogs because they catch attention and get a lot of notes, especially if it's a 'Beast does something evil' panel because you inevitably get a flood of people in the comments going HEY WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS, but you wanna know what I pretty much never see?

Fan art.

Idk, maybe I'm looking in the wrong place for it, but there's no fanart, for X-Force. I've seen exactly one piece of fan art for war criminal Beast. Exactly one. I've seen more explicit porn depicting the PS5 and Nintendo Switch fucking in weird robot form than I have fanart of X-Force. Fanfics, also, are very thin on the ground - I've seen maybe five, six, maybe seven?

I actually have one of the higher rated (in terms of views and kudos) X-Force related fanfics on AO3 by virtue of the Irredeemable Beast following on from that plotline, and even then, most of my comments are from people saying, oh hey, it's nice to see Beast back to his proper characterisation again (which is really nice to see, I love that!). I've had one or two people say that they think Beast is still evil, in the context of my story, but . . . honestly, that's an audience I want to cultivate and challenge, so I don't mind that. But still.

That's. Not a lot of fan engagement.

Hell, to go back to the Reddit point - there was a thread a month or two back asking what everyone's favourite X-Force incarnation was, and most people picked Uncanny X-Force (Remender's) or the original 90s run. A few people picked the Utopia era run.

Pretty much no-one I saw picked the Krakoan era book. And I was checking. I was craving that validation. And oh boy I got validated.

There's just. Not a lot going on in these books that's going to foster a dying love in a fan for them, honestly. There's not a lot of in depth characterisation, there's no grander point to the story other than 'CIA bad (but if it were run by these good guy field operatives who understand the necessary evils rather than the stupid bureaucrats, it would be better'). It's just. A pulpy comic book with a lot of violence and a one-note villain.

Who's going to go to bat for that?

In terms of more official flack, well, it's bad form to bad mouth your co-workers, so you're not gonna see a lot of people directly telling Ben Percy he sucks, BUT.

You've seen these panels before, right?

. . . Guys, is this a joke?

And I don't mean, is this a badly produced panel that makes no sense, I don't mean, is this an insult to comic books, I don't mean, are you serious.

I . . . seriously kinda think that this panel is a joke.

Poking fun at X-Force.

Because X-Force Beast is the kind of boring psychopath who can only convey his argument through a PowerPoint. Like, that's a fucking meme. That's straight up a meme. That's the equivalent of, in this essay I will --

Now, this one is also pretty funny, but also . . .

If you were a comic book writer, and you were in charge of a comic book that was getting some fairly intense criticism about the fact that a 60 year old legacy character is being written as the worst villain this side of Charles Manson, and LITERALLY EVERYONE on the internet is screaming that this HAS to be Dark Beast because it literally just doesn't make sense . . . what would you ask editorial to do?

Would you, perhaps, ask that Dark Beast be shown on panel in a different writer's book, acknowledging Beast's evil? That would give you some legitimacy, wouldn't it? Although, that's - a pretty desperate move, isn't it . . .

Especially considering the writer of that book (Kieron Gillen) fucking loves writing Beast. Like, legitimately loves him. You can tell.

This is not dialogue you give to a character you dislike. This is dialogue you relish getting to write because it's fucking fun. This is you getting free licence to get as esoteric and as wild with your dialogue as you want because you're getting to write Beast today.

Beast is fun to write. The writers of the 90s animated show literally said he was their favourite character to give dialogue to because he's so goofy and weird and intellectual.

Not convinced?

This is the same writer, Kieron Gillen, from years and years later (S.W.OR.D was 2009, this book is from 2015).

This is why I think Kieron Gillen was digging at Percy there. Because he clearly loves this character, clearly really is invested in Beast and Abigail's relationship - they were BROKEN UP in normal comics by this point, and yet he went OUT OF HIS WAY to do this. To express a tenderness of feeling and a love and an affection for these characters that scans as genuine.

Hell, look at this.

Is . . . Gillen poking fun at the fact that this fairly important relationship was ended on a whim eight years ago and no-one knows why? Because that's kinda what this reads as to me?

When I met Kieron Gillen at a comics convention a few years ago, I got him to sign my copy of S.W.OR.D. He said, and I quote, that he was fairly certain he'd signed every copy of it ever made. We both kinda laughed, because yeah, that story sold like shit, but also . . . everyone who read it got it signed, huh? And you remember this little 5 issue mini-series that got cancelled well enough to make a joke about it not selling well, with a distinct vibe of, everyone who actually read it loved it, sigh.

Interesting.

It's also worth noting that Jed McKay, currently writing the Avengers, has said that he wished he could have Beast on the roster, but he couldn't. He went out of his way to say that in an official interview.

Interesting.

It's ALSO worth noting that both Grant Morrison and Jonathan Hickman, when asked about Beast at an anniversary livestream, said they didn't see Hank as the kind of character who should be a villain, but merely someone who got into bad situations and reacted like a human to it. Which is. Not something you'd say about X-Force Beast, is it.

why do you support amber?? genuine question no hate at all, I wasn’t keeping up with the case at all

tbh at first i actually supported johnny. simply because all i knew about the case was the whole shit in the bed stuff and thought damn, that was weird. and i knew him more than amber so my gut reaction i suppose was to believe him.

then i started getting spammed with shit like "he haw johnny depp being funny in court" on tiktok and decided to have looksee at the actual trial happening. at this point i didn't have a clue that there had even been a uk trial. i had never heard of amber's op-ed. didn't know about any of the depp/waldman statements. didn't have a bulls notion as to what was happening. but i was also like why in god's name are we as a society sat back overlaying wii music over a trial about domestic violence? and why is it being so well received, getting millions of views?

i think the first time i actually watched the trial was when johnny was testifying and i was pretty much all cringe like awhh poor guy. and fell for his lawyer's stuff and the internet's take on him.

then i watched rottenborn cx him and was like, damn this ROTTEN-BORN guy is kinda mean to this poor johnny depp who has been abused :((((

then i think there was a weekend break where i looked on tumblr and unbiased reddit threads, away from the propaganda machine. and still i was like, god damn these people are stupid. amber heard is obvs evil (keep in mind, i didn't know any evidence, besides johnny's testimony. so, this was all fueled by stuff i saw in pro-depp media)

then, when i finally started to believe amber was when this psychologist came out and diagnosed her with BPD and histrionic personality disorder (yet again having to say that diagnosis in the 21st century is so fucking weird) and i was like wait... (also the fact she had din dins with him got my feathers ruffled straight away ngl)

so then my thick skull finally opened and i was like maybe... just maybe... before making judgements on this case and this woman i do not know... i should perhaps look at the evidence.

so i did. i checked out someone's (i cant remember who's tbh) fact check list here on tumblr. and they raised enough good points that i couldn't in good faith sit back and do mental gymnastics to try deny or defend depp out of them.

so i took those facts on that list and looked further into it. i read uk transcripts. listened to audio. read up some more on domestic violence. looked to twitter threads that were not obviously biased and further looked into the sources provided by the original tweeters.

and by that point i couldn't sit there and say that johnny depp was not an abuser.

then watching amber's testimony soon after, seeing her nearly have an actual, full-blown breakdown on the stand talking about her rape, made me start to actually post about her being the victim in the equation. i had been hesitant because i didn't want the depp pond scum to tell me to die or something (not that they'd ever do that of course)

(kind of irrelevant, but seeing camille vasquez bully amber so intensely on the stand and then be praised made me sick to my fucking stomach. furthering me in my support of amber.)

then seeing testimony from people who aren't even her friends anymore (and them literally crying while recalling it)

also ms girl dawn hughes. she was so on the ball and so qualified in her field of ipv.

then don't get me started on russian oligarch lover mr. adam waldman

okay i thought about it and here is what i would do if I was put in charge of Lucasfilm: first i would wonder how i came to be in this position, but i do have some memory issues so I just go with it. then i cancel all upcoming star wars properties, not only the shows and movies but all the books and comics, videogames and even the lego star wars shorts. i beef up the Lucasfilm legal division, pulling the most promising young lawyers from all over the world who never watched star wars ever. their goal: draft up a legal document that will make it impossible to produce any star wars content ever again. meanwhile the internet is wondering what my next move will be, as i’m a total newcomer to the world of media. then I’ll announce the only project we will be doing that year: a 20 minute black and white short prequel about skeen in an imperial prison. ebon moss-bachrach doesn’t want to do it at first but I pay him 360 million dollars. in the meantime, the team of lawyers is working 35 hour weeks (i’m a good employer) towards my secret goal.

reddit twitter and tumblr are united for the first time in wanting to boycott the skeen movie (that’s the title btw), but when it releases everyone is so starved for sw content they watch it anyway. it is massively controversial because it depicts prisoners eating each other out of desperation, but the ones that are eaten aren’t humans so it’s unclear if it’s cannibalism. i can’t even watch it because i forgot this squicks me out a lot. i gave the creative team total freedom, which might have been a mistake.

during all of this my home life is shit, but let’s not talk about that. i do 12 hour zoom calls everyday because I refused to relocate to california, but then my home address gets doxxed and i have to move to an undisclosed location in the middle of the night (there are a lot of threats against me). people are absolutely hating me, asking for mando season 4, asking for andor season 2 (i have seen the screeners and it is good, btw). dave filoni and jon favreau write an open letter to ask me to reconsider the pause on star wars production but i respond in the only way i know how - with the mariah carey “i don’t even know her” gif. after a while, favreau moves on to develop a vr based immersive series about ultimate fighting about his character in friends. by all accounts, he’s happy.

one of the lawyers betrays me and leaks my plans to the world. fans are in outrage. it’s clear now that i’m planning to ban any sw related media, deep fakes, adaptations, hell, even re-releases of the old stuff. why? i’m not available for comment. from now on, star wars will only exist in your memory, the only place it has ever been good.

there’s an outpouring of fan creativity in the wake of that bombshell leak. people begin to make fan films that are so good and creative that a new wave of avant garde scifi film making is ushered in. a person who worked on the andor set gets massively famous with their spoken word rendition of the scenes they can remember. i go after them with everything Lucasfilm has. this makes the video of their performance even more popular and it becomes the 2nd ever most viewed clip on Vimeo.

other streaming services green-light a mass of scifi and fantasy shows just in case they have the next sw on their hands - entertainment abhors a vacuum. There are so many good new properties, it’s an embarrassment of riches. my favourite of them all gets cancelled after one season though - I will never be sure if it’s because of my bad karma or because someone blabbed about my preferences and this was retaliation. i can’t trust anybody in my inner circle. All over the world, people still are wondering why I did it, but in the end, they are much happier now. sometimes little kids see a star wars toy - one of the few ones that didn’t get destroyed in the five waves of merchandise burnings I had ordered over the years - and asks their parents about it. “It’s nothing.” the skeen movie gets a throwback oscar for special effects twenty years later.

Anyway, what would you do.

lately ive been going through my google history when im bored (which is so incredibly entertaining btw. highly recommend) and apparently, after double-checking my camera roll that date & finding proof to support this theory, i did indeed first watch hlvrai on november 4th of 2020. absolutely insane. i thought i hadnt seen it until mid-2021 at LEAST.

Idk if you are on Reddit, but I used to be often and I actually liked the green sub (well, mostly) because it was great to have an opportunity to freely express pro green opinions without being downvoted into oblivion or insulted. When the show was more actual, the main sub was mostly a hellish experience for pro green fans, so it was nice to have our own safe space. However, my experience has started to change recently. There are too many divisions among the green fandom which isn't great, but that wouldn't be such a big problem if some fans were more tolerant toward other greens who don't completely agree with them in every single detail.

I've noticed (and this is not only on Reddit, but also on Tumblr, Twitter etc. ) that there is a certain narrative that apparently every green has to accept and follow or else will be accused of being a secret black, false green, show pleb (lol)...God forbid if you are not a book purist (because F&B is such a masterpiece lmao), or if you are pro Helaemond or anti Al*smond. Our hot milf witch rules (god, I hate the big titty girlfriend and milf hunter jokes), Helaemonds are primarily self inserts because Helaena is a blank canvas and Helaemonds don't actually like her as she is (according to one of the most recent threads) ... Also, you mustn't criticize Aegon at all. There are literally people who are trying to convince others that he was so great in the book and he would never force himself on a servant. Now, I agree that groping maids is not the same as being a clueless rapist like in the show and the showrunners did unfairly take things too far with him. I understand the frustration, but still, they had some basis for the rape decision (even if I dislike the way they executed it) in the same book these purists worship. They also claim he was as good warrior as the Conqueror himself and if you try to say that he was quite brave but that he was actually severely injured at the beginning of the war and had only one more fight at the end you will certainly be booed. Oh, and Daeron is one of the best Targaryens ever and Alicent's favourite (again, we obviously didn't read the same book) and the evil Sapochnik wanted to erase him only to prop up Aemond to whom he gave Daeron's best traits (again, complete bullshit). Furthermore, book!Alicent is an amazing and apparently more likeable?? character while in the show they totally ruined her. I agree only partially, I preferred her show version because in the book I didn't like her at all while in the show she is one of my favourites, however, her characterization in episodes 8 and 9 seriously annoyed me because of inconsistencies and Rhae fangirling. Still, they heavily exaggerate while criticising her show version. These are only some of the sacred rules apparently every green has to follow or else will be accused of not being the true green. Like, who gets to decide this? Idk, it really disappoints me because I thought that the sub doesn't need to be an eco chamber nor the green fans have to be monolithic hiveminds like black stans they like to criticize, even if they are on the same team. It's been a while since I commented or participated at all there because of these things and will probably do the same on other SM. I think I really need a break of this fandom.

Anyway, sorry for the rant, yours is one of the rare blogs I still like and follow and it seemed like a good place to vent😅. I know you've had some interesting experiences on SM so I believe you know at least partially what I'm talking about.

i get it.

and when i say i get it, i mean the part about there being made up rules of what a 'green' is and how if you're not following them, you will be accused of some bs stuff.

i guess it's partly why i call my self a greens enjoyer and not a green. i've seen plenty of opinions from 'greens' that i didn't like, from straight up unnecessary misogynistic comments (some of them by men who think that this fandom just gives them the pass to say anything) to really weird hypocritical opinions over ships. it's been... exhausting.

for anyone who's reading this going "but what about team black?": everyone knows my takes on tb stans. we're talking about greens right now because this is where we mostly hang out and it sucks that there's many people who fully believe they dictate who gets to enjoy the greens and how.

with me it started with anti targaryen sentiment. when i first started the show, i thought the story was gonna be rhaenyra fighting against her uncle for the throne. i didnt know anything about the dance of the dragons. of course, i started reading on the story very soon and watching the show and seeing the dynamic between rhaenyra and alicent, i easily attached myself to alicent because it seemed like genuinely no one was in her corner, even the people who were supposed to be.

but i still watched the show because of the idea that i'm watching targaryens fight each other and be unhinged and have dragons.

so you can imagine my surprise when i realized that maybe half the people who call themselves greens are staunchly anti targaryen. they don't like targaryens and they don't like dragons. it was a bit of a head scratcher for me. i knew why that was the case, because many of them were coming from game of thrones with an anti dany mindset and saw rhaenyra's side as the more targaryen side (even though in the beginning they were arguing with tb stans over it) and alicent's side is cooler because she and otto are hightowers and not targaryens.

that wasn't the case for me? i mean sure was i critical of dany many times? yes. but i still loved watching daenerys as a character. and i loved the idea of watching a new show that focuses on house targaryen and their dragons.

and then the whole targtower kids debate.... when the argument needed it, greenies were like "yes they're also targaryens" but then they'd hate on their targaryen side and then suddenly they legit started saying yes they're only hightowers because they're better than the other targaryens. to me it's such clownery.... i wanted to knock their heads together w the tb stans who were saying the targtowers kids are not targaryens.

then there's the greens, or more specifically, the aemond stans who babify aemond to such a degree that they speak about how alicent parentified him. those are usually super welcome in green spaces, even though their interest lies almost solely in aemond and whether or not he gets to meet al*s and how aemond is more special than the rest and he'll have his misunderstood storyline together w the only person who gets him al*s. weird that these people are far more welcome in green spaces than helaemonds. but i won't comment further.

and then the helaemond stuff happened. people dk this but i clocked helaemond immediately. i did not come after the show ended and were like omg wow this ship that i didn't notice. no. i immediately picked up on it. i didn't want to tweet about it because i knew it would start a fuss but others were shyly posting and i saw green moots call them all the possible names because of it. and then something weird happened... the same green moots who had been horrible to other people over helaemond started talking about helaeg*n. helaeg*n was interesting to me so i thought hey maybe they losened up a bit? no. no way, they were rabidly against any form of helaemond. i ended up losing 80% of my green moots. i was basically just in my own sphere doing my own thing because these people couldn't get over a difference of ship preference. they were shipping helaeg*n and aeg*nd and alysm*nd, all of them problematic in their own ways, but helaemond was somehow the devil. and i know people who have had the same experience. they were mostly leaning green, but when they started to ship helaemond, other greens jumped them.

about character opinions... i don't get it. i mean, i get it and i don't. i get team green's utter frustration with the writers because i feel that frustration myself and certain sections of the fandom do a lot to mock and poke at that frustration which causes even more frustration. that being said i believe it's impossible for there to be identical opinions on one side or the other, and this includes both tb and tg. imo if you're tg you should be mainly interested in the green characters and mainly invested in their story. i'm not saying you can't like other characters outside of them, but just that they're your main focus.

there's plenty of opinions, popular an unpopular, in green spaces that i disagree with. section of fandoms aren't, or at least they usually aren't, hiveminds. i mean i could be disagreeing even with you but that doesn't mean you're not also a fellow green enjoyer.

i don't really spend my time on that subreddit, but i've heard some stuff about it. i think sections of fandoms should be more tolerant of each other, especially on reddit that has a forum format.

and one last thing: i hate the secretly team black allegations. i've seen plenty of those, some addressed to me as well. it's funny because i've said it before but my blog changed some people's minds on alicent and did a lot to foster symopathetic alicent discussion when the fandom was going completely nuts. so it feels a bit moronic to watch someone raging bc of a ships accuse me of being secretly team black.

my only advice is.... take it all with a grain of salt. fandoms with sides like this one tend to be very cannibalistic and i have a feeling that the greens subreddit isn't the best place to post your opinions unless you're ready for aggressive replies. if you feel like you have opinions that you want to share in a safer space where everything isn't a battle, you could try making a house of the dragon sideblog. that wat, you can post your thoughts and even if you get nasty anons, you have the power to publish them or not, or to even turn off anons completely.

i would avoid twitter as well. it's chaotic and aggressive and when the fandom gets going, it can fry your brain.

Gender & Boys Love: Who Watches BL Dramas in Thailand?

ok i just watched THE MOST FASCINATING LECTURE on the history and transformation of BL in Asia, a+ would recommend checking it out if you’re interested. there were tons of amazing points about queerness and gender and transformative works that i want to shout about but i am not super articulate at the moment and i don’t have the time so! i’m gonna talk about some demographic information that was shared instead!!

(The above was included in a presentation by Dr. Tom Baudinette, a BL acafan. check him out on twitter, he’s super cool!)

what’s interesting to me here is that yes, as has been historically the stereotypical narrative for BL as a genre, the majority of BL viewers in Thailand are women — but a very significant minority are men! this is also something a lot of us knew anecdotally but it’s really cool to have concrete numbers. surprise! a lot of men, particularly queer men, really like bl dramas! in fact, there might be a higher percentage of men watching BL dramas than men reading fic on AO3!

let me talk about that last bit more. as some of you may or may not know, i myself am a bit of an acafan and have published some data science research about learning and comment culture in fanfiction communities. five years ago (oh god, was it really that long??) i did a fanfiction community survey that included a few basic demographic questions. here’s the gender distribution from that survey:

Only 4% of the people who responded to the survey were men. That’s... not a lot.

A couple disclaimers: this survey is 5 years old, and just from my anecdotal experiences I think the percentage of nonbinary and genderqueer users has probably increased since then. the transgederification beam really cracked a lot of eggs during the pandemic (myself included).

Also, over 88% of the survey takers used both AO3 *and* tumblr, so this isn’t necessarily a perfect snapshot of all of AO3 so much as the AO3-and-tumblr crowd. When you look at a survey done in 2018 on Reddit, they found that 63% of the survey takers were female and 29% were male, with 8% responding with various other gender options. The AO3-and-Reddit crowd is, understandably, gonna be a little different, but I suspect the AO3-and-tumblr crowd miiiiight’ve outnumbered them in 2017. Who knows.

Aside from the reddit one, pretty much every other survey done on AO3 that I’ve seen puts the percentage of men somewhere between 3% and 7%. If you’re one of those men, hello!! Who knows how many of you there truly are, but I suspect there are probably fewer than the 21% Nielsen Media Group found in Thailand’s BL drama viewership.

now, i know this is kind of comparing apples to oranges, since there’s a lot of differences between the bl community in thailand and the AO3 community. sure, they’re both largely centered around romantic content about men loving men, but there are a lot of cultural differences and nuances et cetera. ALSO, to be clear, i am not saying that having more queer men in a community makes it more or less “acceptable” to create content about queer men. i just think this comparison is interesting because it forces us to reconsider some preconceptions or biases about what kinds of people produce and consume BL or M/M content, and why.

There is a LOT of nuance in this topic that I don’t have time for — if you’re interested, go watch that lecture I linked above. In general, I would just caution people to think critically about the preconceptions we might have about BL fans in east and southeast Asia and avoid moralizing about BL without taking into account the nuanced history of the genre within Asian queer communities. 😊

When it comes to reaching ccs about the Harry Potter stuff... look I don't want to jump straight to stream chat but. The odds are decent that Lizzie and/or Joel are quietly on Tumblr so I guess we could post under their tags and blindly hope either they see it or someone else relays the message. I guess if someone has a Twitter account they could do Twitter stuff I don't know how Twitter works uh. Look there are a lot of issues with asking someone to address discourse live, this is how you get half thought out opinions and poorly worded language and people doubling down on iffy stuff but I'm kind of out of ideas. Maybe if the stars align just right one of them will come to Tumblr and then we send an ask about it? I mean like Grian does usually do a bit of chat reading at the end of every MCC like that's the best time I could think of to contact him but again maybe the response we want is not the response from someone who just spent several hours being incredibly stressed and under a lot of pressure and also please give the correct answer and come to grips with something that large swaths of the internet still haven't fully reconciled with after (months? years? what is time anymore) in the next two minutes or you and your friends will all be cancelled. What if we use carrier pigeons-

@/elytrans gave the suggestion of going to Grian's business email, and honestly it might be the best option. But even then I don't know if he would see it. Is he the one that runs it? Will he automatically consider it spam since it's not business related? And whoever does it has to do it in the most cordial way possible just to let him know we're not attacking him or trying to cancel him or whatever.

The other option for Grian would be Reddit of all places, but he goes there maybe once a month if not more? The chance of him seeing it are slim. I know he has Instagram but I can't help with that I have never used it in my life and I'm not sure if it would be the right place.

For Lizzy and Joel just hoping they're on Tumblr won't do much. The maximum it will do most likely is that more people in the fandom will be aware of the problem which is mostly a good thing unless someone in the fandom decides to deal with this in the worst way possible (threats, insults, cancellation... You name it).

I don't know a lot about Impulse's social media usage. Honestly I only know about Grian's and a bit about Cleo and Joe.

But as you said talking about this in chat seems like a horrible option. If it were Joe probably not but for Grian it definitely would. You wouldn't be able to convey why this is something important in a small message and it's not exactly the place or time for such delicate discussions. It's MCC for crying out loud.

It's a bit of non ideal situation we're stuck in.

We as fans can make light hearted jokes about Ewan and his characters and “gossip” WITHOUT harbouring any ill intention of prying into his privacy, It’s one of the reasons why I love your account aside from your amazing content and being the very mature one in the house! And from what I’ve seen most of us really do respect him as an actor and private person. It’s weird that some in the fandom feels more validated than others and would go to extra miles to gatekeep him against anyone who they deem “inappropriate”. I feel like this weird “ purist culture” in the fandom has gone out of the hand sometimes.

You don’t have to post this if you feel like this would potentially cause drama which is the last thing I want in our fun little space. I just need to get this out of my chest and I apologize if it feels too negative.

I feel like Tumblr is a safer space than Twitter and Reddit - I have poked around the Ewan content on there and people are wild. I’m talking death threats, bullying people into deactivating their accounts, real nastiness over a man that doesn’t even know they exist!

Literally everything I post is intended to be taken with a pinch of salt - I’ve said it before, I am a silly little guy here for a silly little time!

It's been 2,5 weeks and still nothing. It's 2023. Most people live for attention and will not let a chance go by by not posting about seeing Evan Peters in a nightclub, or a mall, or a coffeeshop, or the place were she works were his ex Emma happens to go. Because until now these are the places they've been spotted right? What are the chances that out of all people his famous ex who he loved so much and had a hard time getting over her, visits that particular place. Is someone maybe trying to write a Wattpad story for their blog?

It's also quite a coincidence that an anon on another blog saw his "girlfriends" tumblr and said she was giving Lana del Rey vibes. Then immediately after that, another anon predicted that Evan is going to end up with someone like Lana del Rey. Apparently some have a crystal ball now in which they can predict the future.

Then another anon was saying how she (or he) has the real blog and will not share because "girlfriend" was getting hateful messages and death threats (if this is true, it's disgusting and those so called fans should be ashamed by their disgusting behavior) but guess what. If anon has her real blog and knows what's up and doesn't like how "girlfiend" is being treated, than maybe they can... euhm I don't know... set the record straight about this circus so we can end this once and for all 🤷‍♀️ because according to anon him and tumblr girl definitely have something. So since she's according to some, a tumblr girl, It's possible she's reading everything we say right?

I'm not denying he has a girlfriend. If all this happens to be true, then someone just send proof. It's not rocket science. We are not obsessed with his love life or "girlfriends" blog. It's the rumor after rumor after rumor and the constant changes of it without evidence that is frustrating. Just stop with this middle highschool behavior already. The more rumors are being spread without evidence, the more people will investigate. So anons who know business, be smart... Or just stop mentioning it. And to Evan: if your girl with her tumblr account let's you read this: think about how self-worthy you are. True fans know you've been through a lot and the real true fans want to see you genuinely happy.

Of course we need to "wait and see," and this could mean nothing, but apparently James was talking about coming to realization about what the characters mean to people on one of the new podcasts. So, that sticks out to me as something to keep in mind. Maybe there's a small chance they could dig deeper into Murdoc's character this phase...maybe. But it's entirely dependent on where he was looking. We've always assumed he and/or the team looks at fan spaces, but we never know where. These days, I'd assume it was Twitter, Tiktok or reddit which uh... would probably mean they'll continue on with evil!Murdoc. But you never know. They were clearly looking at Tumblr circa P5, but I assume they probably hate us now for steering them towards sad!Murdoc lmao (sad!Murdoc was iconic!).

To the other point of your ask - tbh, I don't get why they can't be more creative with moving the story. There are so many ways to move the plot along without Murdoc. Like wow, imagine the other characters having depth and fucking up for once. He's talking big game about this phase being "different", so I'll be waiting. I'm also interested to see what ideas the other artists in the artbook present.
