i know legilimency according to snape is not simply mind reading but im gonna say it is, and i wanna talk about it.
we know snape can use this. he uses it on harry when he lies to his face about sectumsepra. i think pottermore also confirms he can do it. there's also a throwaway line from the very first book when harry says he feels like snape can read people's minds.
according to the wikia, snape used it when harry was trying to fight him during the 'flight of the prince' which is why he was able to deflect his spells so easily which is so. damn. COOL.
but remember when i said that when snape is talking to voldemort before he dies, his face is described as a death mask? like he already knows he's going to die? what if he could read voldemort's thoughts?
i feel like voldemort is good enough to deter this.
however.
throughout the entire conversation...snape's eyes are constantly said to be flickering towards nagini the whole time.

There's something very moving about Snape making Harry watch his most vulnerable moments. His most shameful and painful memories. Including his Worst one. That's the same man who went hysterical when Harry invaded his privacy in OotP... and at the end of DH, either those memories slip by mistake, or he trusts Harry, or he really wants to confide to him about what happened, or he decides that's the price to pay for his absolution and/or his final mission. Regardless, here you have the man who holds so dear to his privacy -- a spy -- and he is giving his dearest secrets to the boy he hated yet had to protect. So, was it an accident? Was it an utilitarian strategy born at the last moment? Or did something change in Snape in his last year, when Harry was away?

So... Why is it that Snape removes his memories in front of Harry during the occlumency lessons? My mind goes to "removing memories from one's mind is costly somehow, enough so that Snape would only do that when it's absolutely necessary and not a second before," but it could be an unconscious desire to signal to Harry that there is more to him than he lets on, maybe?
And do you think he has to relive it all when he puts his memories back his head?

Snapetober Day 22 - Power
1986
He took a deep breath, and looked up. His eyes met Dumbledore's; he relaxed. Often, the hardest part was to prepare, to know what was going to happen. But the struggle itself, at this point at least, relied mostly on instinct and will, and he possessed both.
This time there was no manipulation, no lying, no awful mind games. The headmaster only wanted to test his strength and endurance and, Severus suspected, to assert his own power once more. He could sense the old man's raw delight and excitement every time he entered his mind, every time he pushed his barriers and unearthed memories and feelings that were not his to see; Severus usually observed his childlike cruelty with interest, from above, in a sort of dissociative but mighty state.
It was part of the role. They both knew it. But only Severus knew the extent of the old man's vicious delight - Dumbledore believed he could hide it, and that was Severus sole, but decisive, advantage.
He let Dumbledore dig up memory after memory, unimportant ones but ones tied to sentiments strong enough the old man would always be satisfied.
Severus enjoyed, vaguely, the pain and shame of knowing the man had seen so much. He simultaneously felt and believed the shame was well-deserved, and wished for it to strengthen the foundations of his loyalty with debasing roots. He knew that his loyalty was unwavering, he did not doubt it; but he viewed it as something external, something he had little control over.
What Dumbledore knew, it was a safety net. A twisted, self-damaging safety net - the only way to insure he would always look down when addressed by the old man.
Still Severus was also proud, gifted and powerful. He admired Dumbledore just as much as he loathed him, and for every insidious insult, every debasing game, he wished to make him pay.
Looked up close, there was nothing contradictory about this all. It simply fulfilled different needs, and none truly conflicted with the other.
So he waited. He let Dumbledore have a look around, where he was allowed, where the Dark Lord would be allowed, too; personal enough, but never compromising for the spy.
The man underneath was but a casualty.
Dumbledore came close, he became excited, and Severus chose that very moment, his only Achilles' heel. He let him take a step further, a step which Dumbledore knew, too, was calculated - then he pushed him out. Out of the memory, out of his mind in a formidable demonstration of power and magic; the headmaster attempted to fight back. Both their minds confronted one another, Dumbledore's roared, his remained silent and struck at every display of dominance. They bled.
Dumbledore was pushed out. Brutally - with a savagery Severus did not know he possessed.
He watched as the old man stumbled backwards, falling from his chair. The headmaster was breathing heavily; his own nose was bleeding profusely.
Vaguely, Severus realised that he would have been incapable, at that very moment, of casting the simplest of spells. Yet he could stand, though barely.
When he found the strength to speak, his voice was smooth, and his tone almost detached.
"Would you like a hand, headmaster?"

Playing 100 Kudos Ask Game for THIS FIC!!!
Update! @jilymicrofics
Lay All Your Love On Me | Rating: M
Chapter Eleven | Beginning
Prompts: shine Summary: The first time Lily kisses James, he doesn’t even know.
“Occlumency?”
James starts as the hefty book is stolen from his lap by the red-haired goddess he shares a dorm with. Not that she’s a goddess because of any subjective feelings he might have towards her. It’s just a fact; anyone in the castle would agree.
Lily gently turns her bottom lip over between her teeth as her eyes quickly take in the contents of the page. James tries not to think about how her lips would feel on his – or anywhere else.
“Why are you learning occlumency?” Shining green eyes regard him curiously. They're objectively beautiful in an entirely platonic way.
Because every night I fall asleep and dream about making you scream. “I think it will be useful for the war.”
“And is the practice coming along?” Lily prods, flipping through the chapter. James is relieved she’s taken his excuse – it’s not a complete lie; it will be helpful during the war – and not pushed until he (inevitably) spilled.
“Sirius helps me sometimes,” James reveals. “I suppose I’m just reading until I go home and see him again.”
“Alright.” Lily nods. “Let me know if you need a potion for the headache.”
“I wi– how do you know about the headaches?”
Lily hesitates. Glances away from his eyes for a moment and suddenly James knows exactly how she knows before she confirms it. “Severus started learning it in fifth year, right before we…” She trails off and looks rather uncomfortable.
“Right,” James says, his own mood souring at the thought. “Well seeing as I’m not keen on spending any time with Snape – no offence – I guess I’ll stick with reading until I see Sirius again.
Lily hesitates again and opens her mouth, wrinkling her nose (in a completely un-adorable way, not that he's thinking about her adorability) and pursing her lips.
“What?” James
“I can help you practise if you want…I know the spell.”
Lily straddling his hips, bouncing as he guides her hips. His fingers threading through red hair as her lips bob up and down his shaft. Her soft sighs as James licks up her dripping lips. Lily in a white dress James found in one of his mother’s muggle fashion magazines. Lily mouthing three little words to him through a brilliant grin.
“I don’t know if that’s such a good idea.”
“Right.” Her voice is tight now. James drags his mind from dreams to the face in front of him. She’s flushes, looking at the floor as she snatches her bag up, placing his book on the low table in front of him.
“Wait, Lily I –”
“It’s fine James, I get it. You need someone you trust.”
Even though every word she speaks is accurate, something is still dreadfully, incredibly, entirely, wrong.

A Snape mentors Harry fic with all the regular players, a cottage by the sea, and the righting of past wrongs. This story, while AU after OOTP, follows canon as closely as possible. It is the first story of a completed five-story arc beginning the summer after Harry’s fifth year and ending at the end of the “eighth” year.

How close Snape and Sirius Black have to having a Muggle brawl in the Order of the Phoenix is so satisfying, I had hoped that Gary Oldman and Alan Rickman would have been able to have that moment at Grimmauld's place.

Snape really seemed like he was doing a good job trying to teach Harry about occlumency in the first lesson. For the most part, he was being pretty civil.
(Though a book about occlumency and legilimency would have been helpful homework)

we know that the occlumency lessons with snape and harry were a match made in hell and snape wasn't very good at teaching him. his method apart from some good advice, e.g. emptying your thoughts before bed and shutting down your emotions before lessons to put yourself in the right mindset - something harry never did. i mean we've all read the books, harry cannot do these things to save his life.
but harry also had zero intention of doing these things anyway. snape is partly to blame but so is harry. harry had no intention of properly learning occlumency and it says so, so many times in the books. he wanted to know what was beyond the door.

Occlumency Headcanon
A bad occlumens can't keep people out of their mind at all.
Harry is the obvious example here
A mediocre occlumens can keep people out, at least for a while, but it will be painfully obvious what's happening. You can protect a secret this way, but not tell a convincing lie.
Slughorn is like this. He can hide the true Horcrux memory, but he can't hide the fact that the memory was tampered with.
Also Draco in Half-Blood Prince; he's able to stop Snape from reading his mind, but Snape immediately knows Draco is hiding something.
A good occlumens can hide their secrets without hiding everything. The legilimens will not be able to tell that occlumency is being used unless they really start looking for signs of it.
I think Narcissa is doing this when she lies to Voldemort; he doesn't suspect her, so he doesn't look too deep, but I like to think she's also using occlumency and is good enough to use it without looking suspicious.
An extremely skilled occlumens can hide their secrets so thoroughly that the legilimens won't be able to tell they're lying even if they do get suspicious and start looking more closely.
Snape, obviously

Hi! Happy new year!
I’m looking for a fic where somehow Draco ends up joining the trio on their hunt for hocruxes; or at least helping them partly on their hunt. All I remember is the trio ruminating over the initials RAB found in a note, but Draco tells them straight away that it stands for Regulus Black. They’re all surprised that he knew so quickly, even though it was really obvious (to him). I also think Draco was helping Harry learn occlumency (which might be a different fic, and if so, I would also love your help finding this fic as well!) Thank you for your help!!
Anyone?
Edit: Thanks guys!

Chapter 13
“Did you know Severus had an Aunt?”
Malfoy stared impassively at his master, his face carefully blank.
The Dark Lord grinned. “I take it he didn’t tell you” he intoned.
“Georgina Prince, his mother's older sister. Brilliant witch. Exceptionally talented. A talent for Occlumency has always run in the Prince line, but Georgina was a natural. Beyond anything either of us could imagine.”
His reptilian gaze flicked to her, relishing in Hermione’s undivided attention.
“She was found hanging in her parent's cellar at only fifteen years old. Her parents covered it up, of course, claimed it was an accident and all but erased her existence. They couldn’t afford such a scandal. But young Severus grew up hearing stories of his mad aunt Georgina. A cautionary tale.”
Malfoy stiffened.
”A natural has the power to rewrite their own minds, though they end up causing more harm than good. They all succumb to madness in the end. In all my years I have never heard of one surviving to adulthood. Let alone a Mudblood.”
