depp is an abuser and a fucking piece of shit and i hope he fucks off to be never seen or heard again while he gets the help he needs
cw: depp vs heard
also fuck yall with ur “i dont wanna take sides” “i dont wanna involve myself”
the whole internet is involved in the trial. if u share or post anything about this trial you are actually involving yourself
on one hand we have smbdy whos much older, much more powerful, has said he wants to do despicable things to the corpse of the women he went on to marry, whos best friend is an abuser, who has lost in court and can indeed be called a wife beater,
while on the other we have a woman who is 20yrs younger, much less famous, who is bisexual, who divorced him and who counter-sued him when he sued her for defamation for a very short piece in which she talks about getting known for being a victim of domestic abuse and who received death threats in the aftermath of her divorce
there is literally text of depp saying how he wants to give her total global humiliation
and hes achieving it because ppl are fucking memeing her recounting her story of being sexually and physically abused by fucking johnny depp
nobody fact checks anything and everybody seems willing to believe any fucking thing
because ppl are very much willing to hate women and to not believe them
i understand not wanting to engage with this shit, i didnt want so either, but i couldnt stand seeing this misogynistic shit plastered all over the internet.

Today my therapist introduced me to a concept surrounding disability that she called "hLep".
Which is when you - in this case, you are a disabled person - ask someone for help ("I can't drink almond milk so can you get me some whole milk?", or "Please call Donna and ask her to pick up the car for me."), and they say yes, and then they do something that is not what you asked for but is what they think you should have asked for ("I know you said you wanted whole, but I got you skim milk because it's better for you!", "I didn't want to ruin Donna's day by asking her that, so I spent your money on an expensive towing service!") And then if you get annoyed at them for ignoring what you actually asked for - and often it has already happened repeatedly - they get angry because they "were just helping you! You should be grateful!!"
And my therapist pointed out that this is not "help", it's "hLep".
Sure, it looks like help; it kind of sounds like help too; and if it was adjusted just a little bit, it could be help. But it's not help. It's hLep.
At its best, it is patronizing and makes a person feel unvalued and un-listened-to. Always, it reinforces the false idea that disabled people can't be trusted with our own care. And at its worst, it results in disabled people losing our freedom and control over our lives, and also being unable to actually access what we need to survive.
So please, when a disabled person asks you for help on something, don't be a hLeper, be a helper! In other words: they know better than you what they need, and the best way you can honor the trust they've put in you is to believe that!
Also, I want to be very clear that the "getting angry at a disabled person's attempts to point out harmful behavior" part of this makes the whole thing WAY worse. Like it'd be one thing if my roommate bought me some passive-aggressive skim milk, but then they heard what I had to say, and they apologized and did better in the future - our relationship could bounce back from that. But it is very much another thing to have a crying shouting match with someone who is furious at you for saying something they did was ableist. Like, Christ, Jessica, remind me to never ask for your support ever again! You make me feel like if I asked you to call 911, you'd order a pizza because you know I'll feel better once I eat something!!
Edit: crediting my therapist by name with her permission - this term was coined by Nahime Aguirre Mtanous!
Edit again: I made an optional follow-up to this post after seeing the responses. Might help somebody. CW for me frankly talking about how dangerous hLep really is.

off of my last post: i feel like corporate horror has such a rich seam of possibilities that are just begging to be mined. the helpless, nightmarish feeling of watching your life get chewed up by the implacable machinery of faceless corporations in which you are nothing but an easily-replaceable cog and knowing the whole time that you chose to be here. that you can, theoretically, leave any time you want. mindless, pointless busywork that you're expected to take pride in even when it has no measurable impact. feeling like you're running on a treadmill - always busy, never achieving anything. upper managers who only communicate with you by email. CEOs who never communicate with you at all, and may not actually exist for all you know. you can leave any time you want. but you can't, can you? not really. you still have to pay the bills.

it's fun how "villain gets tricked into confessing on video and now everyone hates them" is usually the resolution to a kids movie (monsters inc and coco do this for example) but i think the director from nimona is the only villain (that i've seen at least) who's wily enough to get out of being twitter cancelled

Something I miss from earlier eras of the creative side of the internet was things just being unabashedly low-budget. Just all unashamedly amateur, unprofessional, ‘I don’t own a good camera but I have a story to tell you’, ‘I can’t afford a good mic but I have a song to sing for you,’ ‘I don’t have any kind of background in editing or lighting and I only just picked up this guitar last Tuesday but here’s an entire musical me and my friends wrote about our favourite book, we filmed it on a potato and put it up on YouTube in ten minute segments because we thought it was pretty funny.’

one of the things i really like about sdv Elliott is that he apparently moved into town a solid year before you… specifically to write his book… and yet he still doesn’t even have a genre picked out. unreal. im wild about him. writer mood

there's just... there is no reason to make yet another cop show in this day and age. copaganda is not only bullshit, it is a failure of imagination.
you want to watch brooding characters with dark pasts investigate crimes in an official capacity? just use private detectives (cops have a miserable solve rate anyway). want eccentric geniuses & their sidekicks solving mysteries? i present you with armchair detectives & neighborhood busybodies. oh, you're craving a workplace comedy-drama starring overworked protagonists doing their heartfelt best to resolve community conflicts? social worker office sitcom! bitch this is ACHIEVABLE

i'm feeling a lot of emotions about how the adventurer's guide straight up says laios is smart
like, of course he is. of course he is. i already knew that and i think a lot of other people do too, whether they've read this or not. but also, the perception of him in-universe and also in a lot of the fandom is that he's an idiot, and he's just... not.
he's smart, but not in a way people want. he's smart, but not socially. he's smart, but only in ways that benefit his interests--his love of monsters, his ability to fight them, the things that will save his life and the lives of those he loves. laios is intelligent, but only if you judge him for himself rather than compare him to society at large, to what people think of when they think "smart."

I think its a rite of passage to make an au at least once, and ive been thinking super hard about how Sonic raised tails lately. So obviously an age swap au had to happen. Aka, the au in which they are both team turbo nerd and Tails needs a Vacation as a dire medical suggestion.

i’m gonna be negative for a second so fair warning
the STEM obsession is literally a plague on the current academic world, especially the recent “women in stem” shit. of course people who are typically discouraged from male-dominated fields should receive encouragement from schools, recruiters, etc, but i am really sick of this being turned into “STEM is the only valuable career path and you are betraying your intelligence as a woman/poc/whatever by doing literally anything else.”
there are SO many non stem jobs that are essential to the proper functioning of society and are definitely NOT worth any less than being a doctor or engineer. i’m tired of there being zero scholarships, internships, encouragement in general for literally any other career path. it’s just disrespectful and honestly dangerous. we can’t let humanities-focused subjects and careers die because STEM is the current hot topic. and i just hate most of all the appropriation of feminism to do it.
