help Inge just randomly dropped in the reveal that [redacted], someone who is a key player in the events her thesis covers, STARTED A CULT?? i'm losing my mind which I think most people would expect but the thing is i'm losing it over the fact that it's [redacted] doing this. I can only describe him as having chronic flop disease. he is in a permanent flop era. he does naught but take massive flops in public.

for example one time he spent months claiming that he knew who had killed a young man who had died that year and that he could prove without a doubt that it was who he said it was. he spread rumours that incited a toxic back-and-forth between two hamlet groups that were allies. he stirred the pot. he threw out accusations. then when people tried to convince him to come to a meeting to talk about his hot shit he refused to come. after weeks of running his mouth at every available opportunity they finally got him to show up at the same meeting as the people he was accusing, and he proceeded to ramble incoherently for half an hour until everyone told him to sit down and shut up. he annoyed so many people on different sides of the conflict that they were united in their irritation and things didn't escalate further.

Oh also my favourite thing about Bulmer, apart from his paper on frogs: like I said he spent a lot of time asking Kalam about small creatures and plants and the like, and when a geologist he knew wanted to visit to talk to the Kalam about local geology Bulmer discouraged him because he didn’t think the Kalam really knew much about geology. Eventually the geologist visited anyway and when he got there the Kalam talked to him extensively and prolifically about geology. Bulmer was embarrassed, was like “Why didn’t you ever tell me about any of this?” And the Kalam told him they didn’t think he really knew much about geology.

my side-quest with this thesis has been checking all the scientific (Linnaean taxonomy) names for plants and animals mentioned in the thesis and inevitably only finding sources written by Bulmer, another anthropologist who was living with the Kalam around the same time as Inge and who spent a great deal of his time asking Kalam about flora and fauna. Bulmer and I have a fun secret rivalry which he doesn’t know about on account of having died in 1988; I like finding out whether or not specific species have been re-categorised since he wrote about them.

Problem is, as mentioned, there is very little written about random Kaytog Valley plants and animals that wasn’t written by Bulmer, and I can’t always access them for free. I had a little tantrum recently about not being able to access a paper he co-wrote about frogs and Inge sent it to me and it’s everything I wanted it to be. Look at this shit

the upside of working on this thesis has been getting to learn a ton of little stories about some guys from the highlands of Papua New Guinea but the downside has been that I’m genuinely sad I’ll never get to meet any of them, especially Bsky, whom I fear I have developed a parasocial relationship with

A House of Representatives petition has just been filed. Unlike other petitions, this one will be presented to the House and requires a response from a Minister.

Elbit Systems, the Israeli defence contractor responsible for much of the weaponry currently causing devastation in Gaza, has just been awarded a $917 million contract with the Australian government.

The demand of this petition is to remove all contracts and deals between Australia and Elbit Systems.

Again, this is more than a change.org petition - this is a government petition with a certainty of being tabled before the House of Representatives. This is just one step of many that this country needs to take in ending Australia's support for the genocide of Palestinians.
