No zero days 1/365 - 01.01.
Day 1 of @chenopodiumlang's no zero days 2023 langblr challenge 😎
Disclaimer: I already know that I won't be able to keep up this challenge for four languages, so I'm only tracking Norwegian and Japanese. For January, I will also be tracking Spanish, because I'm getting ready to take a Spanish course soon.
Norwegian
Read a film review for the film Kampen om Narvik (https://p3.no/filmpolitiet/2022/12/kampen-om-narvik/) and wrote down new vocab.
Japanese
Read the Japanese Wikipedia page for New Year's dreams (初夢) and used the info to make a post about them.
Spanish
Chapter 1 of Con Gusto A1: I skimmed the first chapter, took notes and practiced asking basic questions with my partner. Tomorrow I’ll listen to the audio for the chapter.
Tumblr media
I'll post screenshots of the heat map week by week.

Langblr Reactivation Challenge - Week One - Day Two
Wow I really told myself I could catch up over the weekend and instead fell even more behind! Love that for me :) Anyway, here are some of my long-term and short-term goals specifically for Norwegian, since it is my focus rn.
Long-term:
Be able to speak in Norwegian with ease with my grandma and learn more about our culture and her memories
Help my father get back to learning Norwegian!
Short-term:
Understand the past tense!! so simple but something I haven’t focused nearly enough time on. I’m sure if I sit down with my textbook I’ll get it down in a day or two, but it for some reason always slips my mind when I try to use it
Finish memorizing the most important 625 words on Anki
The long-term goals will be achieved through steady progress and focus on speaking and listening skills. I’ll continue my daily learning methods, while also adding some speaking exercises (even just talking to myself!)
For short-term, I’ll take detailed notes on the subject I need help with, memorize the irregular verbs with Anki, and keep on coming back to the subject so it really sticks in my mind. I’ll also continue with my daily Anki refresh to finish memorizing those first 625 words.

Honestly I love how lax Norwegian (bokmål) is with spelling rules. You say fram instead of frem? Totally cool of you to write that. Your dialect uses -a to form the past tense instead of -et? Go ahead, write that down. Ben or bein, sent or seint, both right it doesn’t matter which one you choose. Don’t wanna use the feminine gender? That’s cool you can just make that word masculine. It’s so customisable and I love it.

“Bhí coicís ó thit sé as an tsnáthaid shalach, agus bhí sí fós ag brath ón scéala faoi. Tháinig na focail sin os a cionn mar mhéara fuar oighreata an bháis í féin trasna a craiceann. Fear a brionglóidí agus an té a chreid sí gurbh é an té a bhí ann di, imithe go deo, ar fad ag sleamhnú rud éigin nár thuig sí. An rud a rinne aon chiall di ná go ndearna sí gach rud ab fhéidir léi chun é a choinneáil amach ón mbáisteach dubh.”
the first paragraph of chapter one of dead man walking translated into my ancestral tongues (french, dutch, irish gaelic, swedish, danish, norwegian, icelandic, portuguese (portugal), lithuanian, latvian, and estonian)—and here’s the original english text:
“It had been two weeks since he had collapsed from the dirty needle, and she still reeled from the news of it. Those words had crept over her like the icy cold fingers of death herself right across her skin. The man of her dreams and the one whom she believed to be the one for her, gone forever, all by the swipe of something that she didn't understand. What made no sense to her was the fact that she did everything she could to keep him away from the black rain.”

0612 / i have been listeing to the norwegian radio nonstop, especially nrk! i found out it’s the most popular channel in norway, which is quite interesting. i also have been doing lots of practice phrases and even better: i came across many friendly native norwegians who are helping me to study, so things are looking up! i just need to stop procrastinating so i can do more readings.

I spent 6 hours at the library doing research and starting to write my thesis today. I'm starting with a bit of close-reading on the actual piece, while keeping in mind all theory and criticism that I've read.
I'm stressed and tired, but the light was beautiful.
