what did you think of them putting soc/ck moments into s2?
I mean, at first I was a little confused because we just genuinely didn't know how much of the soc duology we were getting this season.
Kaz - I think as soon as I realized about 7 minutes in that they were getting the Pekka storyline I was onboard. I love Kaz, a lot (I know very surprising, we are all shocked). And for whatever reason, every time I'm reminded of his backstory, I become an instant Kaz defender... it's happened the same way after I read the first book.
So from that perspective I enjoyed it. I know some people thought it was "too fast" but the general problem with that statement is we were introduced to that conflicted back in 1.01/1.02. So, even if we as book fans wanted to be mad it... it was already a problem that Kaz was going to have to deal with whenever he got back to Ketterdam. What I'm saying is extremely unpopular, I know. But that conflict had to resolve itself as a result of the events in s1.
Inej - I think the very minute Amita said/accidentally spoiled her ending I knew vaguely that this was going to take something from CK's ending... I think days prior to the premiere I was like if they split up the crows, I'm gonna be so mad because we literally just, you know, got 5 of the 6. They come as a set... at least until the end of the duology lol So, Inej's plot is something I keep coming back to... I have some unpopular opinions because I do think the writers have hinted at what happens since 1.07... and I personally don't think Inej is as open with her struggles as people want her to be? So, I loved that Inej is learning slowly about herself.... exactly like she does in the books.
Matthias and Jesper - There were things the show elevated, specifically on Matthias and Jesper. The problem with Matthias in the books is that we never actually get to see his struggles (we do get to read about his final fight, but just the general vibe of his everyday life? Nope.). Actually, I love the fact that we got to see this man struggle because Matthias needed the reality of what prison life does. I do love Matthias lmfaooo but I do have to remember that he was a druskelle and all the internal bigotry that comes with that. And I loved that Jesper embraced his gifts quickly... because we don't get to see that in the books ever (not even in ROW). We got to see him and his mom (or a version of his mom). That scene ended. me.
Wylan - I have no notes for Wylan because I fucking love Wy. But his story is slightly different from the books so we might get to see more??? *cross fingers*
Nina - Tbh Nina's arc was the one I was most worried about? Because I didn't know what elements from the books they were gonna use. And actually one thing I will say... maybe unpopular? But Kaz and Nina's friendship in the books was a bit hit or miss for me? So to have them have mutual respect and just generally vibe well? Like I loved that change so much. I don't know why but this fandom treats them like they legit hate each other, so it was nice to see them just chatting like regular normal people. If that makes sense.
(Also, don't hate me... but I do think Nina ended up having stronger bond with Kaz than with Inej? And that was strangely unexpected lol)
Also, this is me thing, but I went in with shockingly low expectations for this season. Like I was like this is fanfiction, I call the sab writers unironically sab fanfiction writers. They know what fan service looked like and went with it. Did I love the overall product? No, but I did have a lot of fun watching.

I’ve had Never/night sitting on my bookshelf for like a year, having initially bought it because I really liked Aurora Cycle (a series Kristoff co-authored), and now I’m hearing it sucks. Would you say it’s worth reading?
i would not recommend reading it, no. from what little i know of it, it reads very much like a cishet white guy who likes writing about lesbians bc it’s what he likes watching. plus, the main character is afaik a teenager when he writes her having explicit sex. and last, there’s a whole slew of messy problems with the rep for people of color, since Kristoff first said there’s a group of people in that world based on the Māori (in a very surface level “i don’t know anything about the Māori apart from the fact many of them have facial tattoos” way without looking into the cultural significance of tā moko and how to properly represent that on the page) and then backtracked when Māori readers came forward to say the representation he’s provided is lazy at best, disrespectful at worst, which led to him backtracking on his stance on whether or not he wrote the Māori in
this vid that goes into more detail about Kristoff in general. the only thing she leaves out is the aforementioned teenagers having explicit sex on page

Zara watches Trek: TOS Episode 1:
The Man Trap
I’m going to do a new thing!
I originally wrote this down for my Trek-obsessed bestie @clinttbartton and didn’t intend to post it but I saw @noitsbecky127 do a similar thing and realized I could share it with everyone here even tho i’ve never done something like this before (and even if no one else cares, its a cool record for me)
To preface this let me say: before starting this I had a vague idea of who Kirk & Spock were because of pop culture and knew the names of some of the other main bridge crew. I knew almost nothing about the format of the show. I grew up watching Doctor Who (including some of the older stuff when my Dad persuaded me) so a lot of the obvious “60’s” stuff wasn’t completely alien to me (pun intended) but a lot of the Trek stuff was completely foreign as you will see
This is pretty long but here we go!
Point 1? What kind of date is that?
Spock’s in charge? Huh that’s unexpected
Ah Kirk narration~
Do all of them start with exposition? That’s a tried-and-true plot device and its kinda cool
Damn ok Kirk the ladies man
Who’s the third guy? (I was referring to the red-shirt)
I hate the shirt uniforms they look so flimsy and ugly

Ah so it is all 3 of them seeing a different one (edit after finishing the episode: this is a weird misleading thing because it implies its in their minds instead of a physical change that the others would also see… maybe its both? I could give it the benefit of the doubt)

End thoughts:
Yeah ok that wasn’t a fantastic episode but it was tolerable and i’ve seen worse
Introduced the gang!
tho had a few quite questionable scenes with the ladies (almost all of them now that I think about it) except with Uhura and even she was hit on creepily)
Is Spock the only man on this ship who respects women?? Come on! But he just seems respectful in general
Relatively simple plot, but drawn out like old Who always was
Script was ok, not noticeable either way (bad or good)
Tbh I think the creature looked better than early Who monsters so they get credit for that!

So there you have it! My first forray into Trek documented! At the time of writing this, i’ve watched a few episodes of DS9 (the first few + Distant Voices because I love Bashir) and TNG (I think i’m in love with Data) and a few more of TOS (2-4 and Piece of the Action) as well as half the episodes of Star Trek Continues (White Irises made me fucking cry so hard and I haven’t even seen the episodes it was based on!)
(I didn’t do this for 2-4 or the others but I could absolutely go back and watch those in a while and i’m sure I’d remember what I was thinking!)

A drow would certainly explain Astarion’s white hair and red eyes! But sometimes in D&D you roll a 13 with a completely logical idea and an 18 with an absurd one, and I’m a sucker for those moments of absurdity. (Although, that being said, in BG3--thus far, of course--drow don’t have fangs and pointy teeth while tieflings do.)

It’s not what he did to me...
...it’s what he did to Eugene!
ok so we’re gonna get into my BEEF with King Edmund. THIS MOTHERFUCKER has a kingdom, right, and the entire kingdom is built around his ancestors protection of this crazy magical artifact that has kind of a One Ring effect to it. Somehow the rock kills his wife and he’s like OKAY EVERYBODY OUT and displaces ALL of his people. Ok, ok, so you say: “he did it for their protection! The Moonstone is dangerous! And it’s not like he killed anyone, he just sent them away.” True! This alone is not what makes Edmund a shitty person! But he also sends HIS SON away. Still, “for his protection!” you shout. Yes! Okay. So he sends baby Eugene off to an orphanage to be adopted. Good, a reasonable and noble course of action for a single father finding himself unable to take care of his infant child. But, he doesn’t just send him away- he also uses his ravens to keep tabs on him! That’s kinda sweet, isn’t it? He still cares about his boy and wants to see what he’s up to from afar.
But then, Eugene is suffering in poverty. He turns to a life of crime to make ends meet. He grows up a thief, a rapscallion, making friends in all the wrong places and getting into all sorts of trouble. He becomes known far and wide, his wanted posters are everywhere. He’s been at this since he was a kid! The earliest Flynn Rider wanted posters we see have him CLEARLY a child. How old was he? 8? 10? Putting his life on the line to steal because it’s better than starving to death on the streets?
And Edmund KNOWS about this! He collects his wanted posters! He watches his child son struggling and scraping to get by without ever ONCE being like “oh I’m a king I should send him some money/food/HELP OF ANY KIND WHATSOEVER.” he is content just to sit back and watch Eugene suffer!! What the fuck man?! That’s your son!!
THEN at some point he loses track of him and doesn’t know about his redemption story and his love affair with the Coronian princess and all that jazz, and at the end of S2 the gang shows up on Edmund’s doorstep and he almost kills them all. The ONLY reason he doesn’t slice Eugene’s throat is because he sees those eyes and is like “oh its the fruit of my loins I feel no remorse about abandoning!” How many people did Edmund kill for trying to get into the castle before our heroes showed up?
THEN. HE HAS THE AUDACITY. To act all lah-dee-dah and lackadaisical towards Eugene, EXPECTING him to accept him with open arms! And we’re supposed to be amused by this silly thinks-out-loud character? Hell man he refuses to refer to Eugene by his chosen name for a REALLY long time, too. He sent away a baby prince, watched him grow into a criminal from afar, and then expected his perfect baby prince to come back and love him? No! And Eugene, thankfully, isn’t just like “omg dad yay!” No he’s fucking pissed that he’s been lied to his whole damn life and his dad KNEW his struggles and did NOTHING to help while still expecting affection from him once they finally reunited!
to be completely honest I had really hoped that the show was going to take this in a “the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb” route and have Eugene be like you may have sired me but you’re not my dad and tell kids that like “hey it’s ok if your biological parents didn’t parent you and you don’t want to be forced to love them.” Tbh the show puts way too much emphasis on the bonds between biological parents and kids, even if said parents were awful. I mean Cass got redeemed in the end and kind of halfway went there? But her entire villain arc was based on the idea that she cared more about Gothel’s love than the man who raised her. Which I mean yeah that’s definitely something that Is important and they definitely did some things very well there, but...it could have been so much better than it was. Anyway yeah I was kind of disappointed with the whole Eugene eventually loving Edmund thing.
Also Edmund just annoys me to hell and back. They try so hard to make him likable and every single attempt at it just falls flat to me. He’s really dumb sometimes and even though they tried to build him up as this powerful like ace-in-the-hole he literally just sat back and ate cake while Cass flaunted THE MOONSTONE (as in The Very Thing he devoted his life to and destroyed his own kingdom for) around. Almost every line out of his mouth had me rolling me eyes. Like. hnng. Do better, man.
