So I had three annoying things happen to me today, one of which made me deeply disappointed and angry. I already vented elsewhere about that though. I'm supposed to be winding down, so for the sake of my mental health I'm going to share the good things that managed to happen today.
Renewed my library card for a specific purpose and made my mom happy by allowing her to use it to check out some Stuart Wood books for herself
Managed to successfully use my library card to connect to the Libby app despite my state/county having a subpar collection of digital ebooks to choose from. I ended up borrowing Nikki Grimes' memoir in verse Ordinary Hazards. She's an influential poet for me, so I was delighted to find this.
Cheered myself up by watching Detective Pikachu. It was enjoyable, even though I had issues with how the antagonist was written.

Middle School Monday: Garvey’s Choice: The Graphic Novel by Nikki Grimes illustrated by Theodore Taylor III
Garvey’s life has plenty of amazing potential, but he’s still unhappy. His father is upset that he isn’t an athlete, and the other kids at school bully and tease him. Garvey loves reading science fiction and playing chess, and he’s fascinated by astronomy. But it’s not until his best friend encourages him to join the chorus that one of his interests creates a connection that helps other people understand and admire him. This story tackles a lot of tough subjects, including family problems, bullying, overeating, and anxiety.
Garvey’s Choice was originally written as a novel in verse, telling a story through a series of tanka poems. This graphic novel version uses those same poems with just a few changes, and incorporates illustrations by Theodore Taylor III that will introduce this story to a whole new audience.
This is an inspiring and uplifting story about learning how to accept yourself. It’s a great book to read and think about, or to spark a discussion!
Give this book to older kids and younger teens who enjoy novels in verse, as well as characters who overcome obstacles on their life’s journey.

The Poetry of Reading Between the Lines
The Poetry of Reading Between the Lines #YA #Poetry #Novel #AmReading #AmWriting

It connects with so many of us who can relate to the individual stories of these characters. One thing that drew me into the storyline is how the high school teacher, Mr.…
