TMNT: SATURDAY MORNING ADVENTURES #12
April 2024
By Erik Burnham , Sarah Myer, Luis Antonio Delgado, and Ed Dukeshire.
Tumblr media
It's part 1 of 3 of the Turtles against Mr. Ogg. This time around, he puts them through a gauntlet that will take them to face... other heroes in a half shell.
Tumblr media
SCORE: 8
This book is so good, that even a not that great issue will score well. Nothing against Mr. Ogg, but this chapter was repetitive and almost uneventful. Except for the last page (and that was already leaked).
I think I would be okay with this level of decompression, if the book came out twice a month. But do we have to wait two more months to read the entire story? Hopefully next issue lives up to the challenge (and I got the impression that it may not).
Spoilers after the break...
Tumblr media
I suspect that this crossover will be just a meta-joke and will not count as an official "turtles meet turtles" story. But I tend to wrong with these things, so maybe it will.
Just by looking at the cover for next month, I noticed that each turtle has shading according to its style (with Leo and Mikey being the most obvious ones). That was a nice touch!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Throw Down with Street Fighter in New Comic
Tumblr media
IDW Publishing has announced a Street Fighter / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles crossover comic miniseries. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Vs. Street Fighter hails from writer Paul Allor, artist Ariel Medel, and colorist Sarah Myer.
“Arriving in Atlantic City to compete in a prestigious fighting tournament, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles quickly run afoul of the world-famous Street Fighter™ crew...and their legendary Psycho Powered fighting forms! Both eager to show off their moves and prove their mettle in combat, the two teams instantly clash, sparking a crackling rivalry that can only be resolved with fists and steel (and maybe a Hurricane Kick or two). With tensions already maxed, the pressure mounts even further as both teams find themselves embroiled in a wave of mysterious disappearances plaguing the city. Could the tournament’s mysterious benefactor be to blame?” (IDW Publishing)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Vs. Street Fighter #1 (of 5), featuring Cover A by Ariel Medel, Cover B by Kevin Eastman, and a Retailer Incentive edition by Vincenzo Federici, goes on sale in May 2023.

REVIEW: TMNT & Usagi Yojimbo WhereWhen #4
Stan Sakai is no doubt a master of comic art. Starting way back in the 80’s and first publishing Usagi Yojimbo in 1984 who would’ve ever known that a story about a samurai rabbit set in feudal Japan would both garner such critical acclaim as well as stand the tests of time all the way to this day. Over 40 years later Sakai is still writing amazing stories within the world of Usagi Yojimbo and…

TMNT: SATURDAY MORNING ADVENTURES - APRIL SPECIAL
April 2024
By Erik Burnham , Sarah Myer, Jack Lawrence, Luis Antonio Delgado, and Ed Dukeshire.
Tumblr media
April gets zapped into a different dimension where she has to help Ace Duck get to the heart of K'avila. In the backup story, Raph and Mikey help Mona Lisa get to the bottom of a case.
Tumblr media
SCORE: 10
It may be the presence of Ace Duck, but reading this special reminded me of when I was little, and I would read these books that had a few Disney comic-books each. This universe has the potential to be like that. I wouldn't mind monthly specials going side by side with the main series (but I think right now these are kind of quarterly).
This was also an excellent opportunity to shine a light on April, and she did great in this adventure. I guess, in a way, reporters are very much like adventurers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, first cameo of Scratch, as I predicted...
Tumblr media
The book also implied that Mona Lisa has been a friend of the Turtles ever since they met (and she has been learning ninja skills from Splinter as well). But because she is from New Jersey, they can't hang out all the time. We also find out about Don Turtellini... not to confuse with Don Turtelli. He's another cousin. This probably also explains why there were two different looking Don Turtellis with the same MO.
It was great reading April, and revisiting Mona Lisa. Really loved this issue.

Kate's Top 3 Graphic Novels of 2023
Tumblr media
Kid Pick: Look on the Bright Side by Lily Williams and Karen Schneemann
Look on the Bright Side is the sequel to Go With the Flow and continues the storyline of Brit, Abby, Christine and Sasha who are all best friends trying to navigate a new year of school. The book deals with having a crush on your best friend, new relationships, having surgery and joining school clubs. Thankfully they are able to help each other out with all these new feelings, emotions and hardships.
Adult Pick: The Talk by Darrin Bell
In The Talk, Darrin Bell discusses his experience with the conversation parents must have with Black children about racism and the brutality from police forces that is so relevant in the U.S. He recalls his experiences with “the talk” both as a child and father. I think this is a very important read for all adults.
Teen Pick: Monstrous: A Transracial Adoption Story by Sarah Myer
In Monstrous, author Sarah Myer describes their struggle to fit in with their family, classmates and community. They deal with being bullied at school and struggle to contain their anger in these situations. Thankfully they are always able to turn to their artwork and cosplay to help them through difficult times. Sarah's art throughout the book is often dark and shows how much they are struggling with their mental health.
