Halloween Horror Nights
So, last night I attended my first Halloween Horror Nights (HHN) event. I've lived in Orlando for years, but have never gone because I'm a wimp and get scared easily. But The Last of Us got me for this year, how could I not go see Joel and Ellie fight off some clickers in real life, right?
I'll save TLOU to the end if you want to skip to that (or don't want to get spoiled).
Tumblr media
Mr rhoorl and I had a plan that was basically to do all of the TLOU stuff this visit. We have a pass so we're going to be able to go a few more times, which is nice because I didn't feel pressured to do it all in one night.
We ended up getting to do all five scare zones throughout the park. While they all had distinct themes, they were all connected via the event icon (the master of ceremonies, if you will), Dr. Oddfellow. There's some HHN lore around this character, which I still need to read about for my return trips but think of him like a crazed circus entrepreneur.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I only got photos during the first scare zone because it was still light out. I had a friend tell me that the performers target you if you're on your phone, so I put it away. I then made very aggressive eye contact at the performers basically to say I see you and you see me so don't scare me... but that approach didn't work. 🤣 HHN uses fog effects to it's advantage, there were times I was walking and could not see in front of me and someone would pop out. Eek!
New this year, the Death Eaters descended upon Diagon Alley in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter section of the park. This was so cool and they were so intimidating and scary! Some people brought their wands and tried to duel with them which was fun to watch. They also sought out anyone who had a tattoo of the dark mark.
There was a show called Nightmare Fuel Revenge Dream that was pretty cool. Lots of dancers and aerial performers doing their thing to metal and electronica. We got very lucky because we were amongst the last people to get in for our performance before it reached capacity and because they were running out of space, we got to sit in a reserved section that was empty - so we got really good seats. Yay! Unfortunately, they didn't allow photos during the performance.
Ok now to the TLOU stuff!
Tumblr media
My husband and I made a beeline to the TLOU house first thing. We were so pumped, especially after seeing on Instagram that Neil Druckmann had been at Universal earlier in the week to see the final product. It made me feel like if he’s signing off on this, then it must be good. For those who have played the game, the house is set in the Pittsburgh level of the game.
We waited about an hour and then made our way inside. I’ll be honest with you, with this being my very HHN and my first haunted house since I was in high school (a long time ago), I’m probably not the most reliable narrator for this house but I can tell you I had a lot of fun. I noticed Joel in the very first room we were in and I immediately shot my shot at him and said “I love you Joel, protect us!” Like, I had to. He was wearing the green flannel shirt, like COME ON.
There were several clickers and runners throughout the first few rooms that would pop out. While I knew that the performers could not touch you, I was surprised by how close they got when they popped out. The good news about that was I was able to see the masks pretty close up haha. The bloater they had in the house (I think there were at least two, maybe a third but I may have had my eyes closed), it looked freaking awesome!
At one point we see Ellie, ushering us along to safety - the performer looked great and was so convincing. We then spotted Joel up on the second floor of a house protecting us because that’s what Joel does. Again, I yelled my appreciation. My thirst reigned supreme over my terror. There were a few more scares on the way out but we made it to safety!
It was all a blur but I had a blast going through the house and can’t wait to go back. Now that I’ve gone through it once, I know what to expect. My wedding anniversary is in October and our gift to each other this year is going to be a behind-the-scenes tour where you can walk through the houses with the lights on. TLOU is one of the houses on the list and I’m so excited to do that because I know that Universal and Naughty Dog have put so many Easter eggs in there. A friend of ours said that at one point you could see Joel’s backpack and watch, but I was too overwhelmed to notice on my first walk-through!
There were two food booths with TLOU-themed food and drinks (there was definitely a mushroom theme with the savory items). You could sit and eat in a FEDRA-themed area which was cool. There were Firefly symbols and “look for the light” written everywhere. I stood in a super long line, but I got the “Left Behind Ravioli” which came in a food ration can that you can keep. It was cheese ravioli in a truffle cream with tempura Enoki mushrooms. It was actually pretty tasty and filling. We also got the Fedra Ration Bar which is essentially a scotcheroo but the coolest part is that it came wrapped in a ration card (which I also kept). The final food item we got was the Cordyceps Corndog which was a Korean cheese dog with truffle cream and sprouts. Theme park food booths can sometimes be hit or miss, but I loved all three of these items.
The decorations were on point. I really loved all of the details that went into this sign where you can see the evolution of the infected. I’ll try and get a photo of this in the daytime sometime.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There wasn’t a ton of TLOU merch compared to some of the other IP-related houses like Stranger Things or Chucky. But, I managed to get a shirt and a coaster along with an event t-shirt I can wear when I come back on my next visit.
I’m looking forward to checking out more of the event in my subsequent visits and catching more of the hidden details in the TLOU house as I get used to wear the scares are.
If you made it this far, thanks for reading my rambling and happy spooky season to you all!

Chun-Li's Elegance: Femme Fatale by Jade Gretz
In the pulsating heart of an ancient city, bathed in the glow of neon lights and the rhythmic cadence of distant drums, Chun-Li, the elegant and powerful Interpol officer, found herself entangled in a web of supernatural intrigue. The streets, once alive with the ebb and flow of everyday life, now harbored shadows that whispered of an ancient evil awakening from its slumber.
Chun-Li's investigative instincts had led her to the heart of the city's underbelly, where rumors of a mysterious vampire lord who thrived on the life force of powerful martial artists circulated like ghostly whispers. As an expert in both the physical and metaphysical realms, Chun-Li approached the investigation with a mix of skepticism and determination. Little did she know that her journey would plunge her into a dark and malevolent world where the lines between the corporeal and the ethereal blurred like the edges of a haunting nightmare.
The night was draped in an eerie silence as Chun-Li, clad in her iconic blue qipao, navigated the labyrinthine alleys that wound through the heart of the city. The air, heavy with a palpable sense of foreboding, clung to her like an unseen shroud. The flickering streetlights cast long, twisted shadows that seemed to dance with an otherworldly rhythm.
Her investigation led her to a dilapidated dojo, hidden within the depths of the city's forgotten corners. As Chun-Li cautiously stepped through the creaking doorway, the air thickened with a palpable malevolence. The dojo, once a haven for the disciplined pursuit of martial arts, now exuded a sinister energy that raised the fine hairs on the back of Chun-Li's neck.
In the dimly lit interior, she discovered cryptic symbols painted in crimson on the walls, each stroke resonating with an ancient power. The scent of incense lingered in the air, mingling with an underlying musk that hinted at the presence of something not entirely of this world. As Chun-Li ventured further into the dojo's heart, she felt a spectral gaze upon her, as though unseen eyes observed her every move.
Suddenly, the shadows coalesced into a figure, materializing before her …(see the rest of the story at deviantart.com/jadegretzAI). @blupjeansweek May 29th: AU
[remember when I said I'd write the arcade date from Starblaster Lanes?]
“How have I never realized that this place was so close to my job?” Lup asks, following Barry through the front door of the arcade. A rush of air conditioning tumbles over them. It’s dark inside the arcade, the windows treated with a deep tint. The flooring isn’t the garish nightmare carpet Lup was expecting to see in an arcade, rather some dark tiles with faint specks of holographic glitter adorning it. A synthy 80s pop playlist plays quietly, under the sound effects from countless arcade cabinets.
Barry hands the guy by the door some cash and gets a nod in return. “It’s one of those things that either you know someone who goes here all the time and they drag you here, or you just never find out about it. It’s not the flashiest building, you know?”
And it’s true. The facade of the building is a dilapidated looking brick. No large sign like its neighboring businesses, just a peeling decal on the front that lists the hours and the price for an all-day entrance.
“How’d you find this place, then?” Lup’s astounded at the sheer variety of cabinets. Lots she’s heard of, countless others she never could have even dreamed up.
Barry moves through the arcade with a confident kind of comfort; he’s in his element and it’s clear to see. “I moved here when I was first starting grad school and I didn’t really have a ton in common with my classmates. They were nice enough in lecture and everything, I just never got around to really getting to know them. So, I took a lot of walks and stumbled into this place by accident, But it was like my paradise, you know?”
Lup stops in front of a game that features what looks like Godzilla, King-Kong, and a werewolf. She nods to Barry. They pick the Godzilla and werewolf, respectively. “I get that. Embarrassing as it is, that’s why Taako and I dig the bowling alley so much. We got into so much shit in middle school that our aunt just started dropping us there with some cash on days she was at work early. And now we work there. And it’s lame, probably, but it was a nice place to lay down some kind of roots.” She grimaces as her character bites into a piece of building that was concealing a toaster and falls down, defeated.
“It’s not lame! It’s nice, feeling comfortable somewhere.” Not too long after the demise of Lup’s giant lizard, Barry’s werewolf falls victim to a similar fate. They both share a laugh about this and meander to other cabinets, idly playing a few, laughing when they lose.
Lup eyes the massive mural in the back depicting all manner of pop culture icons, and she and Barry take time pointing out the best ones. Lup’s especially fond of what seems to be Dot Warner, though she appears bereft of her brothers.
At long last, they approach the Space Invaders cabinet. Being his home turf, Lup lets Barry take the first crack at the machine. He racks up quite the respectable score; nothing that takes down his personal best, but something to knock poor old Bob outta seventh spot.
Lup claps and rubs her hands together like a villainous cartoon spider. "Alrighty, that was a pretty good showing but there's a new sheriff in town." She sidles up to the machine and meditatively hits the new game button.
She dies fairly quickly.
"Yeah, see that's what we in the biz call a trial run," Lup says casually, stretching her arms and rolling her shoulders. Barry laughs good naturedly. She bounces on her toes a few times before readying herself in front of the machine again.
She does markedly better this time, the trial run seeming to have worked magic. When she exhausts each of her lives, she's delighted to realize she's managed to snag a spot on the board. Near the bottom, but there nonetheless.
"Just going easy on me, huh?" Barry asks, a grin pulling at the corner of his mouth.
"Exactly right. Couldn't unleash my full force right here. Then you might get turned to goo and I can't in good conscience subject the employees here to goo cleaning," Lup says seriously.
"You're just so kind and thoughtful."
"I am. I'm like the Princess Diana of this arcade."
Barry looks at her, bewildered. "I certainly hope you're not," he sputters.
Lup grins. "Yeah, I guess that wouldn't bode well for either of us, huh?"
"It wouldn't!" Barry nods toward the tiny snack counter in the back corner, boasting two empty stools and delicious 80s prices. "How about I buy you a soda while we figure out how to muscle our way into the line for the N64 over there?"
"Think you could throw in one of those dubious hot dogs on the rollers?"
"You drive a hard bargain, but I think we can make that work."
Lup grabs his hand as they slowly make their way to the counter.

Dtk and azrael headcannons? I’m so invested in this AU ❤️
OF COURSE!
most of my individual/general dtk headcanons are probably somewhere here
Az:
he really likes pirates and follows that fashion aesthetic (in the way that Kid has a sort of cowboy theme)
he can manifest wings
physically cannot lie (he's a worse liar than Maia)
extremely artistic
dyslexic
has an emotional support animal named Cerberus. Maia picked her up from an alley and took her home for Azrael. Cerberus is a Cornish Rex and Amelia's bitter enemY
Cerberus and Az also have a strong soul bond and Cerberus can manifest into a giant three-headed cat. He forms a sort of psychic link with her because yeah he can do that
he's got a pair of symmetrical freckles under each eye
A skeptic
Blindly obedient
(idk if we've posted any coloured Az drawings) His eyes are gold like Kid's but the third eye is red
Just in case we didn't clarify, he has the power of premonition
Loves honey! Probably his favourite food/flavour
Will probably duo wield Amelia and Maia at some point. They both end up as Death Scythes but I don't think he fights with them often
Oh yeah he doesn't do much combat
Freaks Amelia out sometimes
If Az has a nightmare he goes to Maia who will probably have one as well and they both do a sad middle night march to Amelia's room and she begrudgingly lets them crash there
Gets annoyed when Amelia smokes (doesn't like the smell)
cries a lot
can't swim
Likes to sit with Tsubaki and watch the rain in silence. She makes him tea with honey
doesn't talk a lot
Kid and Az:
can sense each other's emotions? similar to how Maia is sensitive to Soul's emotions but not quite the same
VERY IMPORTANT!! Azrael will hide in Kid's cape
They don't talk much to each other. They'll usually just sit in comfortable silence. Kid sometimes will talk to him about what he knows and that's probably how Azrael learns. Just by listening and observing
Azrael's hair is curlier than Kid's but he still has the matching (iconic) cowlick mullet thing at the nape of his neck
They look almost exactly alike, except Azrael has an extra freckle, different hair texture and sanzu lines, and the third eye
Azrael reacts more emotionally than Kid does, more like what Kid was like as a child but they have different anxieties
I imagine Azrael is good at the more functional aspects of Kid's job (planning, documentation, surveillance, protection) but struggles a little more with the diplomacy and the power parts of it all
Kid hides Azrael's existence from the public for a bit for a couple reasons. First because Azrael started out pretty rough with the whole necromancy witch situation, and he needs time to recover and adjust. Second because he was concerned that people would react adversely because his origins are associated with Morgana's Asura drama, and because of his appearance (Asura eye). Third because Kid probably wanted time to process everything
Death City tends to have mixed opinions on Azrael but Kid always defends him fiercely (and if that doesn't work Maia and Black Star go and throw some punches)

Resident Evil 4 Remastered is a masterful crossover of action and horror
Picture this you're in the middle of nowhere, deep within a desolate countryside town somewhere in Spain. Eerie whispers in a foreign language echo through narrow alleys, he screeching sirens of crows, lurking from the trees, the unsettling creaks of decaying houses. Then out of nowhere a chainsaw building maniac bursts onto the scene, thirsty for blood. This is the world of Resident Evil 4 in a nutshell. A game that effortlessly straddles between heart pounding action and spine chilling horror.
Tumblr media
So what makes this newer and updated version of the 2004 original classic such a masterful crossover of action and horror. Lets dive into the demented and twisted corridors of the game and unlock its secret formular makes it such a heart pounding and thrilling experience.
To begin with, perhaps Resident Evil 4's most effective feature is that is absolutely nails the delicate art of pacing. Its like Capcom are master chefs with 30 years in the business and they can perfectly craft a gourmet of suspense. The game very slowly reels you in giving you a confident sense of security as the first chapter begins. It builds up its ominous atmosphere gradually, letting the tension simmer for a little while before it reaches a boil. In the beginning you're navigating the dark and eerie outskirts of the quiet village. You hear unsettling noises, but you can not see anything, you wonder what horrors are lurking in the shadows. Then just as you begin to put your guard down, The intensity cranks up to the max, and you are hit with relentless waves of enemies and adrenaline pumping encounters. There is a roller-coaster of emotion and feelings that keep you hooked and alert from start to finish.
Moving onto the mechanics of the game, its combat system is another ace that it has up its sleeve. Resident Evil 4 does not just throw hordes of enemies at you and says good luck, it picks it specific moments where it'll hand you a diverse arsenal of weaponry and strategies that you can you use to your advantage for various scenarios. Some weapons and tactics suiting certain situations over others. The satisfying kick of a shotgun, the deadly precision of a well aimed headshot and the nerve wrecking decision to either fight your enemies in a wild show of gun and glory, take a conservative approach and pick them off one at a time from distance, or flee and run away all together, there are so many angles a player can approach the gameplay with each and all having benefits and detriments. Its a ballet of violence and survival. This balance in empowering the player while maintaining a constant undercurrent reminder of vulnerability and mortality is where the game hits the nail on the head. Despite the protagonist Leon Kennedy being a combat trained, strong and athletic special agent, we are made very much aware that he is not an indestructible superhero. In the situation you find yourself with him, he is a survivor, and every encounter is a potential dance with danger and death.
Tumblr media
The iconic enemies in Resident Evil 4 play a crucial role in it's success. From the chainsaw wielding maniacs to the horrifying and grotesque Regenerators, each enemy is a nightmare in its own right, and require different approaches and weaponry to take them down effectively. Where as the chainsaw man simply requires him to be pumped with as much lead as quick as possible, the regenerator rewards you for having precise accuracy, by hitting the individual parasites scattered within different parts of their bodies. These enemies aren't just nuisance obstacles they are physical manifestations of fear and the game revels in keeping you constantly on edge. The dread of not knowing what abomination lurks around the corner is a constant companion, making every advancing step a courageous leap into the ominous unknown.
Gameplay and pacing aside, there has to be some serious acknowledgment to Resident Evil 4's atmospheric level design. The environments are not just backdrops, they are characters within the horror narrative. Whether you're navigating the eerily quiet settlements of the village, the decrepit medieval castle, a haunted island or an abandoned military factory, each location has it's own flavour of terror and threats that await the player. The tight and claustrophobic corridors amplify the feeling of being stalked and hunted, like you're going to be forced into a dead end, meanwhile open spaces give a sense of vulnerability like you're going to be ambushed by a large count of enemies. The world design feels like a haunted house and you're exploring its darkest corner with trepidation.
What truly sets Resident Evil 4 apart from other games within it's genre. giving it it's title of not only one of the best survival horror games ever, but also one of the best video games ever made, is its commitment to reinventing the survival horror genre. It does not rely solely on the jump scares and grotesque visuals. It creates an extremely immersive experience that seeps write into your soul. The chilling soundtrack, the subtle yet eerie ambient sounds and the very minimalist approach to storytelling, creates a perfect storm of horror. It's not just about what meets the eye first hand, its also about what you hear and what you feel. Every creak, every distance snarl, becomes a part of the narrative, building a truly unforgettable haunting atmosphere.
In conclusion, Resident Evil 4 Remastered is a masterclass and a perfect dovetail between the elements of action and horror. It takes all the best parts of the survival horror genre and infuses them with shots of adrenaline to create a concoction of a heart pounding gameplay experience with spinechilling atmosphere. Its more than a game ; its a journey into the darkest corridors of fear, where any bit of progression forward is a victory against the unknown.

Animation Night 138: Del Toro’s Pinocchio
Happy almost-new Gregorian year everyone!
Tumblr media
No huge introduction tonight since it is late and I imagine Guillermo del Toro needs little introduction in these parts, and for biography, I would be paraphrasing Wikipedia’s quite thorough article. I also have seen fewer films of his than I’d like, so I could give you only broad strokes: he has a deep and very genuine enthusiasm for gothic horror monsters and comics, he likes to tell metaphorical stories about fascism framed through fairy tales, he’s really big on body horror.
Here’s the really condensed version. del Toro got his start on horror movies, made his name on comic book movies Blade II and Hellboy 1 and 2, helping to revive the genre, and through that he got enough clout to increasingly do original films like El laberinto del fauno (Pan’s Labyrinth) and The Shape of Water which fit the del Toro ‘sympathetic or alien monsters contrasted against fascism’ template, Pan’s Labyrinth especially being the iconic del Toro movie; two gothic horror type movies Crimson Peak and Nightmare Alley; and odd duck Pacific Rim, a gleefully silly spin on mech anime. And I’m a little embarassed to say that I’ve only seen Pan and Rim. I’d rather wait to say more until I’ve filled in the rest.
But I will briefly talk about animation, since it’s Animation Night! Although he began as an eight-year-old with a Super 8 camera, Del Toro was interested in using animation from very early on, originally planning to create his first feature film Cronos as a stop motion film until his studio was robbed. He worked for a long time in special effects makeup, and most of his films have had an animation component, often blended with practical effects. With Hellboy, del Toro deep inspiration from Ray Harryhausen’s stop-motion, and asked Tippett Studio (the studio founded by Phil Tippett of Mad God) to make the miniatures and puppets, but I’m not sure if he used stop motion there. Pan’s Labyrinth using elaborate animatronics, The Shape of Water touching up a suit with CGI. Pacific Rim mostly shot its action scenes in CG at ILM, with Del Toro asking them to use a saturated colour and draw inspiration from Hokusai(!) in the wave effects.
Tumblr media
Oddly enough, Pinocchio is not the first time del Toro has made a fully animated something. That is actually a series of CG TV shows animated by Dreamworks, the Tales of Arcadia series. It begins with the urban fantasy Trollhunters (not to be confused with the Norwegian fantasy mockumentary), followed by the sci-fi fish-out-of-water 3Below and time-travel Arthurian isekai Wizards (not to be confused with the Bakshi film).
Del Toro is credited as the ‘creator’ on all three series, which turns out to mean he originally planned it as a live-action TV show, which he turned into a book - a book which got picked up for a film by Dreamworks, and then finally evolved into a TV series. I’ll admit, I haven’t really looked into this much more than that, but it’s apparently scooped up a lot of praise and many awards.
OK, so, enough preamble, Pinocchio then. It’s a famous novel from 1883 by Italian writer Carlo Collodi. I suspect you know how it goes, at least in the broad strokes: puppetmaker Gepetto creates a living puppet, but he wants to be a real human boy; he becomes a serious troublemaker, and gets cursed for it, famously with a nose that grows whenever he tells a lie. Like most novels of the time, The Adventures of Pinocchio was first serialised in a weekly magazine, before getting compiled into a massive volume compiling all of Pinocchio’s many misadventures. (I think it’s interesting how serial fiction is making a big comeback lately, but more on that elsewhere.) In the first part of the serialisation, it ends with... Pinocchio getting executed by hanging, I’m not even kidding, it was supposed to be a ‘be moral’ tragedy. However, if I’m reading the summaries right, Collodi decided to retcon this and serialise it into something longer.
There’s a lot of Pinocchio-related things coming out right now. Disney are continuing their pattern of tedious expensive CGI remakes of their early traditionally animated movies, there’s an upcoming Souls-like game Lies of P, and there’s even a Russian animated film Pinocchio: The True Story. I couldn’t begin to tell you what kicked off this Pinocchio fever, since the book has been in the US public domain since 1940 - not coincidentally when Disney’s first adaptation came out. I was a little tempted, not gonna lie, to do a night where we watch all of them, but I don’t think I could sit through that lmao.
Tumblr media
I showed Disney’s original Pinocchio on Animation Night before. By virtue of its position in history, and the ludicrously complex animation, it has positioned itself as the definitive filmed Pinocchio - the one that all subsequent adaptations must in some way respond to. For more on that, read Animation Night 84: The Walter Dismey.
Funnily enough I actually I fell asleep during that one (I was very tired that day and in a very cosy place...), so I’m actually going to watch it again. It is relevant, because that Disney film was part of del Toro’s inspiration. He set out to make his Pinocchio as far back as 2008, describing it as a lifelong passion project, and that he appreciated what he called horror-movie like aspects of the original as well as the traditional animation. Wanting to set his one apart, del Toro stumbled on the designs of illustrator Gris Grimley, and hired him. Along with Grimley, he found a co-director in Mark Gustafson, a stop motion animator who’d worked with Wes Anderson on Fantastic Mister Fox and evidently had some experience with working with normally live-action directors. Later cam art director Curt Enderle from Laika and usual collaborator del Toro Guy Davis to design characters; the models were built over here by a specialist company called Mackinnon & Saunders. For more see here.
Tumblr media
One of the things that interests me reading about it is that the animation is described as being very naturalistic, with a lot of attention paid to blinking, shifts of gaze, and that kind of thing. That sounds like a fascinating angle to bring to stop motion, and I hope I’ll have the energy to write about it after the film. Narratively, I’ve avoided learning too many spoilers, but I know it involves an ‘Italian youth training camp’ so I think I can guess how that’s going to play given del Toro’s usual themes. But we’ll see! I’m told there might even be songs.
I think that’s all I want to write tonight. So here’s the plan! We’ll take another, more wakeful go around OG Disney Pinocchio (1940), and then dive into the exciting new flavour of anti-fascist stop motion Pinocchio (2022).
Animation Night will go live now at twitch.tv/canmom, we’ll begin the movies in about half an hour at 20:40 or local equivalent. Would love to see you there!!

I think I can tell you a little bit about divine dreamswap while I have time.
-"JR" have a different icon.
-there is no such team as "meme squad", this nickname was given to Nightmare and his team.
-Dream is not going to kill his brother because killing a god has consequences. but if it comes to extremes, he will.
-the castle and, by compatibility, the JR headquarters are located at a height, because of this, Ink and Dream wear warm clothes.
-among the people, "JR" is often called God's punishment.
-first there were cults dedicated to Dream and Nightmare, then after the incident Dream gathered his followers and created "JR" based on them.
-the Nightmare cults were too small to give "JR" a fight, so they joined them.
-at first the Cross was on the side of the Dream, but it was not for long.
-Nightmare is lucky to be short, because most gods are tall, and that has its problems.
-Dream and Nightmare are 1300+ years old
-people follow dream because its aura has a positive effect on everyone.
- Nightmare is wary of cats.
- Kevin the owl.
- the nightmare met Error in the alley when he was running away from Blue.

Ishiro Honda: The God of the Kaiju
In Japanese Kaiju Cinema, whether speaking within the 1950s-1960s era or any point beyond, it is extremely difficult to think of a more relevant and impactful force than the direction of Ishirō Honda. Born on May 7th, 1911, he joined Toho Studios after spending nearly a decade in the Japanese military where he would create his most iconic pieces of work. Because of his experiences in war, more specifically the horrors of being a prisoner of war, it made sense that that horrific scenes of his films would reflect important messages on the effects of war on society.
With that being said, the “Father of Godzilla” would go on to create much more than that with Toho Studios before retirement including The Mysterians (1957), Rodan (1956), Battle in Outer Space (1959) and, most notably, Mothra (1961). For lack of a better word, this man built an empire of science fiction and fantasy films that could not be ignored, becoming so successful that the Japanese monster movie became its own genre altogether. After passing away in 1993, it is truly a crime that he was unable to see the longstanding cultural impacts that his movies had all around the world, even to the current day. This goes especially for modern filmmaking, as some of the most successful directors, writers, editors, and cinematographers of today take great influence from their appreciation of Honda’s feats. Being a revolutionary of the modern disaster film, names like John Carpenter, Martin Scorsese, Tim Burton, and Guillermo Del Toro have all openly expressed their admiration for his films.
Del Toro in particular spoke widely about his admiration for Godzilla when he first saw it as a child, but not just for the massive spectacle of it all. In an interview (the full one will be attached in a separate post for those interested), he described how what affected him most about the film was its gloominess from a human perspective and its “cumulative effect” of “oppression and war” and “a sense of dismay and hopelessness” (Del Toro 00:00:30). The importance of this observation is not simply acknowledging the strong effect that the movie had on him as a viewer, but also as a filmmaker. The gloomy and dark themes discussed in his admiration of Godzilla are very similar to the ones portrayed in many of his most successful works such as Nightmare Alley (2021) and The Shape of Water (2017) which touch on feelings of hopelessness and oppression like Godzilla had on the city of Tokyo. That being said, the many shared tones aimed for each of their respective audiences illustrate how the influence of Honda can be seen and appreciated further through the fans of Del Toro.
More so, Quentin Tarantino shared a similar appreciation for Honda’s work extending through his entire cinematic history. He described the work as “seamless” in combining “science fiction world-building expertise” with the “greatest special effects of their day” done by those “who know how to do it,” emphasizing that the “charm” and wonder of it all “cannot be denied” (Tarantino 00:09:06). Widely considered as one of the greatest filmmakers and directors of all time, this is extremely high praise. Further, to understand that Tarantino had such a strong admiration for not just the style of film that Honda created, but also the process of which he took to create something so large helps to depict the impact that he had on Tarantino’s films. To name a few, Pulp Fiction (1994), Reservoir Dogs (1992), and Django Unchained (2012) as well as a majority of Tarantino’s films contain such a great charm to them among their violent and extreme images, much akin to his takeaways of Honda’s works.

Rubs my hands together and then slaps the names of all your TVC OC muses down on the table. Give Us Halloween Facts!!! // @teardownheaven
Tumblr media
Candel Silverio: Victoriana chic! It's not her standard look at all, stiff ruby brocade and deep gorgeous midnight shades, but Halloween is a busy time for the Mystic Alley. She has to as much dress for the occasion as dress to impress, to sell a story and an eyecatch for her little shop. The spooky old world madame of her dominion of back rooms and candlelit parlors. She's in a lush evening gown with lace elements and a corset that's made of real bone -- but please don't ask after what creatures bones make the inner workings. Bonus is her alligator familiar is curled up in her little bed with a novelty headband festooned to her head. She's a kitty cat!
Josette St. Yves: Going full drag! Has the drawn on stubble, has the shaded adams apple, has the shoulder pads and the slicked back hair and is just selling it. Like her bestie the aforementioned Candel, is going for a more historic look, with matching brocade vest and a long coat the color of sin. The dandy to Candel's noble lady. If you detect in her Vampire verse that she's imitating her 'older brother' slightly, no the fuck you do not. She's not here to sell anything or impress, she's just in town to have some fun and take her oldest friend out for a drink once the shop closes down. Probably has on some era extant accessories courtesy of her Maker.
Karin Lindholm: She's working tonight. She's got responsibilities. Halloween is a fucking nightmare on the Island. Don't ask her to dress up. She's going to do it anyway, but don't ask her to do it. It has to be done spur of the moment as she's throwing her clothes on. Cream button up blouse, dark pants, overlapping dual belts, high riding boots, an old capelet and most importantly, a single earring. No one has any idea what in Hell she is supposed to be. This was a calculated risk she took and she is hilariously bad at math. Only asks if someone has read Mistborn once before feeling too cringe to ask again. Don't worry about her outfit. None of you know what a Vin is.
Kris Lindholm: To the shock of absolutely no one, Lestat. However, she's very proud of herself this year, as a lot of the outfit is either thrifted or DIY'd. Shes becoming a real punk step by step. Spent several evenings at her bestie Mahmoud's house borrowing his mom's sewing machine to get the velvet coat made. It walks a fine line between the iconic Tom Cruise 'Interview' look and some of the in-universe 'IRL' Lestat's music video ensembles. It's everything she ever wanted in a look, but her hair's going to be begging for mercy between the bleaching dyeing and color correcting and then curling it for the authenticity. She's also gone heavy on the contour and makeup effects. Who is she.
Susan Howard: Susan is 50+ years old. Susan is a professional and a fearsome hunter of the undead. She does not have time to dress up for it. If anything, she's spending a night in, drawing up plans and having a festive spicy drink. She's in her knit sweatpants, a half-buttoned flannel, and a lovingly woven old shawl from another life. Her hair is pulled up into a utilitarian bun with a pen forgotten at the base. She's poised over her desk, reviewing building plans, cross-referencing historical records, the sounds of a classic horror movie totally ignored but whispering away from another room. It's simultaneously cozy dark academia and subtly offputting, the whole vibe of her rented room at odds with itself.
Yalizaveta Molyboga: Naughty nun. It amused her. She's played many roles in her time and costumes are a strange sort of comfort to her, her nightly haircut hidden away under a wimple and her marble thighs exposed to the cool night air. She was never Catholic in life, and was turned as a scrawny serf girl, so she has no real idea why she chose this, but she's having fun. Moving among living rabble jubilating in the streets, Vieta's having a fun time herself, just enjoying the vibe and roaming part. On several occasions she has offered passerby 'Body of Christ' via a shot glass and the contents of a vodka bottle strapped to her waist. Sufficed to say, she's a hit and a features on social media feeds throughout the night.
