everyone who’s been reblogging my silly “classics are good, actually” post with tags that are like “this is so true EXCEPT FOR [X]”, i hope you’re pleased with yourself because now i have no choice but to read every book you’re complaining about out of spite.

Have decided my first book of the year is actually finishing Authority. DNF'd it yesterday when I realized there was no way I could finish it in time for new years but you know what? my goal for this year is to read whatever I want, so finishing a series I couldn't finish last year but really want to read is very much in line with that.

My distaste with season 5, and this show as a whole, boils down to the fact that the writers have gone all in on the idea that the only true Character that is allowed to exist in this story is Johnny, and nearly all the others are just malleable dolls for the writers to move around and play with as they see fit to advance the story in a direction that will make Johnny the Ultimate Winner Of Everything.
And I hear the criticisms already of “but Johnny’s the protagonist! Obviously every other character is ultimately going to serve his story.” But Walter White is the protagonist of Breaking Bad and Jimmy McGill is the protagonist of Better Call Saul and Kendall Roy is arguably the protagonist of Succession. And obviously it’s unfair to compare shows of that caliber to Cobra Kai, but do you see my point? In all of the above, the characters that orbit the protagonist are fully fleshed out people, equally complex and just as motivated by their own desires and history and traumas as the protagonist is. And yet still, ultimately, their characters do end up serving the protagonist’s arc, and the story as a whole. Because that’s what good writing is.
But increasingly, all the other characters in Cobra Kai have stopped behaving like actual people—especially the ones that pose any challenge for Johnny. Their feelings get stamped down in favor of removing Johnny’s obstacles towards happiness, which only winds up reducing Johnny’s own character in complexity and likability.
I watch Cobra Kai now and I don’t find any of these characters believable, maybe Johnny most of all, because the writers steadfastly refuse to let him face any real serious consequence for his actions. Instead, they have everyone falling over themselves to forgive him, repeatedly giving him a do over—a chance to right his wrongs without ever ever fully acknowledging the hurt and pain he’s caused. This season, quite literally in the form of a new baby. And if that’s the story they want to tell, well fine. It’s their story to tell. But they can’t keep pretending like this is a redemption story, that there’s anything deeper beneath the surface of this show than just being about a guy who does karate and kicks ass and gets the girl and defeats the Big Bad of the week. This is not a story about trauma, Johnny’s or anyone else’s. It’s really not about anything at all anymore.
#cobra kai season 5#s5 spoilers#throwing in a baby is maybe the cheapest trick in the book when it comes to writing#its so so so so so so so so so stupid#and the fact that robby AND miguel aren’t allowed to have conflicted enotions about this—theyre happy for him and were supposed to see that#signals character growth#thats just so beyond#your deadbeat dad suddenly having a new kid is hard. youre allowed to FEEL thing about that#and being inextricably tied to the kid who almost killed you? thats also hard#they threw in a baby as a cheap and easy way to get all these characters on the same page#and its lazy and boring not to mention spits in the face of everything this show originally claimed to be about#not to mention the idea that carmen would WANT to have a baby with a chronic alcoholic who shes been dating for less than a year#who she’s barely even KNOWN for a year#but what are women if not baby factories right? :)#but whatever!#and the thing is. daniel this season was the kost believable character of them all. because his actions DO have consequences. again and#again and again he is challenged with the consequences of his actions#and forced to examine whether hes making the right choices#but johnny NEVER is#and in the process theyre trying to retcon and reframe the mistakes he HAS made over the past 4 seasons#as trying to be something less severe than they were#you don’t have to water down the deoth of johnnys flaws to make him a likable character!#in fact doing that just literally makes him unlikeable#and it doesnt evade me that daniels writing being at its best happens to coincide with thebseason where he poses zero challenge to johnny#but whatever!!! its fine its fine its fine#ck negativity

Reading Goals for 2023
Tumblr media
in 2022 i lost the habit of reading (probably had something to do with spreading myself a bit to thin in all respects 😬) I didnt even keep track of the number of books i read last year
so, my main goal is to consume more books (either audio books or physical) I have taken up painting and I would like to listen to more audio books during this (at the moment I mostly listen to true crime podcasts so I may transition into this with true crime audio books)

Book Review #20 of 2024--
Tumblr media
Everyone on This Train Is a Suspect by Benjamin Stevenson. Rating: 4 stars.
Read from March 16th to 17th.
This is what I've been longing for all month long. I had zero intentions of finishing this book in less than 36 hours, but the heart wants what the heart wants. It's an especially surprising feat given I spent half of that time either working or commuting. My brain found a hyperfixation to override my depression and said "All Aboard!" (Train reference. Ha.) I was surprised to see that I also gave the first book in this series a 4 star rating since I thought this one was actually a bit better than the first. But I also remember feeling the need to bump it up last time based on the writing style and structure.
In this one we follow author Ernest Cunningham who managed to survive a serial killer on the mountains in his last book and who somehow has to survive a train full of murderous authors. He's invited to an author convention aboard a famous train in Australia and things roll along from there (is this stretching the metaphor a little too far? Probably.). I really like the way this series is written and the whole structure of the story. Ernest as a narrator is just so fun. I agree, though, with what Gavin from GavinReadsItAll who said that continuing the series from here might be difficult just because they'll have to try to keep it fresh and new which is hard to do in this format. Based on the way the story ends, I can see a few ways the author can achieve it. I just think it's going to take thinking outside of the box a little bit. I always enjoy a reliable narrator and when the clues are on the page for anyone to pick up and solve the case. There were a couple of things I figured out well before Ernest gave his big reveal at the end, but a few surprises that didn't feel unbelievable.
I think this one had to find its footing a little bit in the actual mystery. How do you follow up the success of the first book? How do you give more twists without being an unreliable narrator? And how do you have subplots that are worth the page time? I think some were more successful than others but can I really fault this book too much when I read it in a day and a half? I don't think I can. I hope there are more in this series in the future and that it manages to keep the structure and writing style fresh and fun.

Man, life is just depressing right now
#the one thing that was keeping me sane has gone away#i would always say 'yeah every medical professional has given up and there's nothing they can do. but at least i have my PTs' well...#my current PT's are the only ones that ever treated me like a person and they always kept trying...but they've given up too#basically Clare was like we haven't made any gains in over a year and your state keeps getting worse. nothing we do helps#so it may be time to consider stopping bc throwing away money isnt helpful either#and i argued that it's damage control and improves my quality of life and i have a progressive disease i never was going to get better#not to mention mentally it helps to know there's people in my corner and at least they haven't given up on me#but now they have and im feeling so very very alone and hopeless#it's not like this is a surprise right? ive always been beyond help and it's an incurable degenerative disease#but still getting to this point fucking sucks#and i went to the new neurologist and he had nothing but crazy experiments bc ive tried fucking everything#and then to top it off the only doctor i trusted from when i was a teenager for one specific med issue had also said the same#literally this week she was like there's nothing more. i cant help find someone else. sorry kid. wishing you the best#and Xmas is a depressing and challenging time too#and i have 400 med problems while trying to find work#the past few weeks have pulverized me and i havent stopped crying in days#so yeah. terribly terribly alone#and im trying not to go down any spirals and havent. my therapist was out this week. but im seriously questioning the point#at this point maybe i should give up too#im being stubborn bc no i cant go yet i havent seen the lights yet or read my new books#but honestly i havent been able to read partially bc im afraid if i do im losing the last tethers to earth#there's not much or anything to live for#it's at times like these you truly realize how much you dont want to die. you just wish you could live#but im broke and freezing and in pain and alone. this story's ending fucking sucks#my dbt is coming in clutch but seriously. is there a point anymore?#never got to live. sick since a kid. hell was always here#sorry for the depressing state of things ill go back to being insane in a moment#p

My objective this year is to finish every book I own that I haven't read yet. I've had some of them since highschool so it's been... a while
It's a total of 30 books in 11 months (from February to December, I fucked around on January), which is absolutely within my usual reading achievements, but I'll definitely be tempted to read anything else so I really need to focus looking at you ao3
For now I've read 4 out of the 30 so it looks like I'm struggling, but I've spread them over the year depending on their word count and the biggest one is already out, so I'm actually on schedule!
Just finished: Le Prieuré de l'Oranger (The Priory of the Orange Tree) by Samantha Shannon + La voleuse de livres (The Book Thief) by Markus Zusak + L'École des femmes & Le Misanthrope by Molière
Currently reading: Babel, or the Necessity of Violence by R. F. Kuang
Next on schedule: Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë + Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor
(next)

2022 reading recap
of the 68 books I’ve read so far, here are some highlights:
favorite novel: The Mercies by Kiran Millwood Hargrave
I don’t normally go for historical fiction, but I’m glad I made an exception here
favorite nonfiction: All the Living and the Dead by Hayley Campbell
this made me feel a lot of things about death
favorite new (to me) author: Sarah Gailly
I read Just Like Home, The Echo Wife, and Magic for Liars. gailly’s ability to engage in quite different genres is outstanding. Magic for Liars was my least favorite of the three, but reading the afterward of The Echo Wife made me want to start it all over again, and Just Like Home was intense in ways I did not expect. I’m looking forward to their queer anti-fascist western, Upright Women Wanted.
and some superlatives to capture the range of horror/suspense/mystery/thriller that I read this year
creepiest: Sundial and The Last House on Needless Street, both by Catriona Ward
weird, violent children, and talking pets
most unsettling: Just Like Home by Sarah Gailly
this reminded me of a horrible dream I had about my mother returning from the dead and my childhood home being alive, only it was even more unsettling.
worst mystery: The Girls in the Garden by Lisa Jewell
unsatisfying
most suspenseful: the Luc Callanach series by Helen Fields
I’m currently on book 4 and while reading yet another cop-led series makes me feel gross, the suspense picks up so fast in these books I am going through one 400 page book every two days.
most fucked up marriage: As Long as We Both Shall Live by JoAnn Chaney
I got into domestic suspense this year before getting sucked into three different on-going crime series, and there’s something compelling about the interior of a marriage as the setting for a mystery. the couple in this book wins this award by a long shot.
