Adventures in Librarian-ing
"Are you really from Korea?"
-- Grade 1 to parent volunteer during National Indigenous Peoples Day celebrations after she said she was Cree.
Her response: No, not Korean, Cree. It's the name of one of the First Nations groups in Canada.
Kid: Oh, 'cause I thought since they both have the "kr" sound...
Her: No, they're different things, but you're right -- they both start with the same sound.

My very last comic for The Nib! End of an era! Transcription below the cut. instagram / patreon / portfolio / etsy / my book / redbubble
The first event I went to with GENDER QUEER was in NYC in 2019 at the Javits Center.
So many of the people who came to my signing were librarians, and so many of them said the same thing: "I know exactly who I want to give this to!" Maia: "Thank you for helping readers find my book!" While working on the book, I was genuinely unsure if anyone outside of my family and close friends would read it. But the early support of librarians and two American Library Association awards helped sell two print runs in first year.
Since then, GENDER QUEER been published in 8 languages, with more on the way: Spanish, Czech, Polish, French, Italian, Norwegian, Portugese and Dutch.
It has also been the most banned book in the United States for the past two years. The American Library Association has tracked an astronomical increase in book challenges over the past few years. Most of these challenges are to books with diverse characters and LGBTQ themes. These challenges are coming unevenly across the US, in a pattern that mirrors the legislative attacks on LGBTQ people. The Brooklyn Public Library offered free eCards to anyone in the US aged 13-21, in an effort to make banned books more available to young readers. A teacher in Norman, Oklahoma gave her students the QR code for the free eCard and lost her job. Summer Boismeir is now working for the Brooklyn Public Library. Hoopla and Libby/Overdrive, apps used to access digital library books, are now banned in Mississippi to anyone under 18. Some libraries won’t allow anyone under 18 to get any kind of library card without parental permission. When librarians in Jamestown, Michigan refused to remove GENDER QUEER and several other books, the citizens of the town voted down the library’s funding in the fall 2022 election. Without funding, the library is due to close in mid-2024. My first event since covid hit was the American Library Association conference in June 2022 in Washington, DC. Once again, the librarians in my signing line all had similar stories for me: “Your book was challenged in our district" "It was returned to the shelf!" "It was removed from the shelf..." "It was moved to the adult section."
Over and over I said: "Thank you. Thank you for working so hard to keep my book in your library. I’m sorry you had to defend it, but thank you for trying, even if it didn't work." We are at a crossroads of freedom of speech and censorship. The future of libraries, both publicly funded and in schools, are at stake. This is massively impacting the daily lives of librarians, teachers, students, booksellers, and authors around the country. In May 2023, I read an article from the Washington Post analyzing nearly 1000 of the book challenges from the 2021-2022 school year. I was literally on route to a festival to talk about book bans when I read a startling statistic. 60% of the 1000 book challenges were submitted by just 11 people. One man alone was responsible for 92 challenges. These 11 people seem to have made submitting copy-cat book challenges their full-time hobby and their opinions are having an outsized ripple effect across the nation. WE NEED TO MAKE THE VOICES SUPPORTING DIVERSE BOOKS AND OPPOSING BOOK BANS EVEN LOUDER. If you are able too, show up for your library and school board meetings when book challenges are debated. Send supportive comments and emails about the Pride book display and Drag Queen story hours. If you see a display you like– for Banned Book Week, AAPI Month, Black History Month, Disability Awareness Month, Jewish holidays, Trans Day of Remembrance– compliment a librarian! Make sure they feel the love stronger than the hate <3

Modern Jobs I think the VDL Gang would have
Dutch - Drug Lord Prolly - but as a real answer I feel like he would Definitely be the leader of a shitty MEGA church
Hosea - I imagine him either as a therapist or a preschool/elementary teacher - Or even better, Number one Bingo Player in the retirement home
Arthur - Funny enough, I can't see him being more than a ranch hand
John - He's a good ranch owner - He, Arthur, Abi, Jack, n a few others live on a big ranch and live happily ever after
Mary-Beth - She's a librarian, author, and frequent AO3 visitor - can't convince me other wise, She has one of the best fanfictions on WattPad I just know it
Abigail - My heart and soul tells me that Abi would be an illustrator for children's books - or a stay at home mom
Kieran - My little Princess Pupcup is getting his degree in Equine science and becoming a veterinarian for horsies
Micah - Hitman or Dishwasher no in between
Bill - Gas Station clerk - Or I can also imagine him working with Kieran with the horses
Javier - Performer, duh - He does a lot of side gigs and plays at cafes on the reg - I can also imagine him being a Spanish tutor for kids
Susan - Let's be honest, she's the principal of a high school or middle school - any other answer is wrong (/j)
Lenny - He's also a writer, but he's not a fanfiction writer like Mary-Beth - I can also imagine him visiting Mary-Beth's library and reading to the kids on Sundays <3
Sean - Youtuber/ Twitch Streamer - need I say more???
Swanson - AA leader - He's also probably trying to get people to stop joining Dutch's MEGA church
Pearson - He's a chef for the Retirement Home that Hosea is bound to - He also works for the local soup kitchen
Karen - I can see her being a dance performer - not like a stripper, but more like ballet or even musical theater
Charles - State trooper at a National Park - No further questions
Tilly - I just imagine her as such a good lawyer like her husband - She's defiantly someone who can talk her client out of the death penalty if needed
Uncle - His job is to park his ass in a rocking chair and Bother John til the day he dies

"plus...he's adorable"
steven grant x reader, first meeting
warnings: slight age gap?
*not my gif*
Tumblr media
finding your passion hadn't been a straight and narrow path. you had no idea how some people just woke up knowing exactly what they wanted to do for the rest of their lives.
in high school you played sports, but they were never something you wanted to do as a career. you recently learned that you love to paint, but it just felt like a hobby. you didn't feel experienced enough to make something of it.
you'd gone to four years of university, majoring in business because it's what your parents wanted. but you were tired. you were so tired and you weren't passionate about anything.
finally, you were sure you were ready to give up. you were in the school library, turning in some text books you'd used, when you just glanced over briefly. your eyes caught the title of a large book.
"If You Are to Love, Love the Moon"
curiosity took over and you picked it up to read the synopsis. by the time you were done, you'd picked out three more books on the subject and plopped them down in front of the librarian.
it took you less than twenty-four hours to finish all of them and you had this burning desire to know more.
which led you here, studying egyptology abroad in london, standing in the national gallery, staring at a poorly constructed pyramid of giza.
"oh bullocks!" you heard a man shout just as something crashed to the ground. you searched for where the noise came from.
your eyes landed on dark brown curls peeking out just above the counter at the gift shop.
nosily, you made your way over. as you placed your hands on the counter you cleared your throat. a man with steven printed on his name tag stood up quickly and gave you a nervous chuckle, "morning."
you suppressed your laughter, "hey there. you alright?"
"me? yeah, fine!" he said unconvincingly. "did you want to make a purchase? i personally recommend the horus figurines. you know, it's believed that he was a benevolent protector in ancient egyptian culture. plus..." he held one up, "he's adorable."
this time you couldn't help but laugh, and thought the same thing of steven himself.
"i'll take one," you said and watched as he rang it up.
he glanced up at you as he put it in a small gift bag, but quickly looked back down when he noticed you'd caught him.
you reached to grab the bag, but paused as your hand brushed his. steven was stunned by the feeling of your hand against his and didn't want you to go.
"do you live nearby?" he asked slowly. you stopped yourself from grinning at the idea of him asking you out.
"uh- because we can ship items in the future," he said instead.
you frowned, "okay. well, have a good day." you took the bag and walked off. the whole thing just made you want to go home.
just as you were stepping out into the street, you were knocked to the ground.
"oh! sorry! i'm terribly sorry, i didn't mean to do that," you heard stevens voice. you got up and dusted yourself off.
"what is wrong with you?" you asked in frustration.
he rambled, "well, many things but that's a topic for another time." you had this look of concern that made steven feel guilty. "okay i'm just going to come right out and say it."
you listened intently. "i would, would you like to- do you want to grab a bite sometime?" he finally got the words out and you giggled.
"i would love to."
steven beamed and nodded, "good. very good." he started to walk away but quickly turned back around, "actually, do you have a piece of paper?"
you searched your purse for a moment before pulling out a small sticky note and a pen. steven took it gratefully and wrote his name and number down.
he handed it to you and you noticed that it read, stev̲en with a v. the v being underlined for emphasis.
you grinned, "see you soon, steven with a v."

International Women's Day
In celebration of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day (March 8), we’re showcasing one of writer, educator, intersectional feminist, poet, civil rights activist, and former New York public school librarian Audre Lorde’s (1934–1992) early collections of poetry. From a Land Where Other People Live was published in 1973 by Detroit’s groundbreaking Broadside Press. This independent press was founded in 1965 by poet, University of Detroit librarian, and Detroit’s first poet laureate Dudley Randall (1914-2000) with the mission to publish the leading African American poetry of the time in a well-designed format that was also "accessible to the widest possible audience." A comprehensive catalog of Broadside Press’s impressive roster of artists (including Gwendolyn Brooks, Nikki Giovanni, and Alice Walker, to name a few), titled Broadside Authors and Artists: An Illustrated Biographical Directory, was published in 1974 by educator and fellow University of Detroit librarian Leaonead Pack Drain-Bailey (1906-1983).
Lorde described herself in an interview with Callaloo Literary Journal in 1990 as “a Black, Lesbian, Feminist, warrior, poet, mother doing [her] work”. She dedicated her life to “confronting and addressing injustices of racism, sexism, classism, and homophobia.” From a Land Where Other People Live is a powerfully intimate expression of her personal struggles with identity and her deeply rooted critiques of social injustice. The work was nominated for the National Book Award for poetry in 1974, the same year that Broadside Press published New York Head Shop and Museum, another volume of Lorde’s poetry featured in our collection. You can find more information on her writings and on the organization inspired by her life and work by visiting The Audre Lorde Project.

Project 2025 is a plan to, in the words of project Director Paul Dans, "...march into office and bring a new army of aligned, trained, and essentially weaponized conservatives ready to do battle against the Deep State".It is organized by the Heritage Foundation, to "muzzle woke propaganda at every level of government", "gut the administrative state" (HUD, FEMA, DOJ, DHS, the Federal Reserve, CDC, FDA, EPA, etc.) and concentrate power into the hands of the President (Leeja Miller, in a video that is linked below, goes into detail on how this would work).Their claim is that "Only through the implementation of specific action plans at each agency will the next conservative presidential Administration be successful".The plan includes a [180 Day Playbook](https://www.project2025.org/playbook/), described as "...a comprehensive, concrete transition plan for each federal agency."
The plan is "the conservative movement's unified effort to be ready for the next conservative administration to govern at 12:00 noon, January 20, 2025".Project 2025 promises to "rescue the country from the grip of the radical Left" and to "unite the conservative movement and the American people against elite rule and woke culture warriors".Project 2025 lists problems with America such as:* The breakdown of the family* Immigration* The "totalitarian cult known today as The Great Awokening"* The erosion of constitutional accountability in Washington* Children suffering the "toxic normalization of transgenderism with drag queens and pornography invading their school libraries"* An "overseas, totalitarian Communist dictatorship" that is "not a strategic partner or fair competitor" and is "engaged in a strategic, cultural and economic Cold War against America's interests, values and people"* "Low-income communities" that are "drowning in addiction and government dependence"* "America's elites have betrayed the American People"* The left using climate change "to scare the American public into accepting their ineffective, liberty crushing regulations"They believe that "These are problems not of technocratic efficiency, but of national sovereignty and constitutional governance. We solve them not by trimming and reshaping the leaves, but by ripping out the trees -- root and branch."
Their broad goals are to:1. Restore the family as the centerpiece of American life, and protect our children2. Dismantle the administrative state and return self-governance to the American people3. Defend our nation's sovereignty, borders and bounty against global threats4. Secure our God-given individual rights to live freely - what our constitution calls "the Blessings of Liberty"Dans states that "The long march of Cultural Marxism through our institutions has come to pass. The federal government is a behemoth, weaponized against American citizens and conservative values, with freedom and liberty under siege as never before".Project 2025 is, in my words, a distinctly terrifying and highly detailed roadmap for:* Installing a Chriso-fascist oligarchy* Rolling back civil and human rights* Removing bodily autonomy from women and transgender individuals* The systematic eradication of minorities and other vulnerable groupsI don't use the words "systematic eradication" lightly or with hyperbole.
They obviously don't come right out and say it, but they state that:* Pornography should be outlawed* The people who produce and distribute it should be imprisoned* Educators and public librarians who purvey it should be classed as registered sex offenders* Telecommunications and technology firms that facilitate its spread should be shutteredThe real problem with the above, apart from the obvious, is that they label the existence of LGBTQIA+ people as "inherently pornographic". They say that pornography is “manifested today through the omnipresent propagation of transgender ideology".They say that the fix "starts with deleting the terms sexual orientation and gender identity ('SOGI'), diversity, equity and inclusion ('DEI'), gender, gender equality, gender awareness, gender sensitive, abortion, reproductive health, reproductive rights, and any other term to deprive Americans of their First Amendment rights out of every federal rule, agency regulation, contract, grant, regulation, and piece of legislation that exists".They also state that "The president should direct agencies to rescind regulations interpreting sex discrimination provisions as prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, transgender status, sex characteristics, etc."
They want to "maintain a biblically based, social science-reinforced definition of marriage and family" which would remove protections for same-sex marriage.Leeja Miller helpfully points out that the above language does not simply include transgender individuals, it includes cis women as well. I'd argue that removing the DEI language also allows them to target anyone that isn't a white, cis, heterosexual, evangelical (or other approved flavor of Christianity) male. Some other points of note:* They want to eliminate the Department of Education* They want to ban the teaching of Critical Race Theory* They want to bring back the practice of impounding funds

"For many queer and trans people, libraries and the books they contain are a haven. These spaces can be a crucial safe space to let our minds explore possibility and fantasy, to learn about queerness and our place within its history and future, to learn we aren’t alone and to validate these feelings of attraction and affection and the subsequent worries of isolation and rejection that bubble up stronger every day.
Now, as conservatives continue to target queer and trans people through methods ranging from legislation and to outright violence, libraries have become a particular target. Parents, local politicians and activists have waged national efforts to bar schools and publicly funded libraries from stocking materials with even the tamest LGBTQ2S+ themes.
In response to these anti-queer efforts, librarians, scholars and everyday people are standing up to attempts to censor or outright erase our culture and history. Even young children have taken up the fight. The result? New LGBTQ2S+ libraries are popping up across the continent to fill that void and to fight back against anti-LGBTQ2S+ censorship."
-Adam Rhodes for Xtra magazine, Queer libraries are on the front lines of the fight against book bans

Adventures in Librarian-ing
Happy belated National Indigenous Peoples Day! (It was on the 21st of June and I'm posting on the 25th)
We had a bunch of activities at my school until noon, all with the participation of Indigenous people (as is only right, of course).
We had an activity on the school field where older kids were taught how to build a tipi, there was bannock, a "games of the north" event, dancing shows, drumming, and an activity about ribbon skirts.
The ribbon skirt thing was originally going to be an activity with a ribbon skirt-maker, but they had to cancel last minute, so I was put in charge of the activity. It was kind of a rainy day, so instead of doing an activity outside I played a video of a readaloud of a book called My Ribbon Skirts and then the kids got to design their own ribbon skirts.
I had a parent volunteer helping me who's Indigenous (Cree from Manitoba) dressed in a ribbon skirt her sister had made her, so the kids got to see one close-up and ask questions about it.
Some of the boys were unenthusiastic about designing a skirt, so I asked her if there was an equivalent for boys they could draw and she said "Yes! Girls wear ribbon skirts, and boys wear ribbon shirts, so you could design that instead!"
The boys were much more enthusiastic after that. :)
P.S. For anyone wondering, if you're Two Spirit (very roughly the equivalent of being trans in Canadian First Nations cultures) you can wear whichever you prefer (many wear both at the same time, which must look super rad).

Reflections (of the Past)
>> Somewhere in Jubilife City, there’s a large monument celebrating the Hero of Hisui— it doesn’t depict their face, or any distinguishable features at all— but 5 days a week, a young person passes it on their commute. They pay little mind to it, a mundane part of their daily routine, until 200 years ago in ancient Hisui, when they reflect on their past in the future and they realize it was for them.
>> A set of identical twins in their high school days, idly flipping through a world history book when something catches both their eyes: a black and white photo of a group of people taking up the bottom half of a page. Their eyes scan the picture, and Emmet points out an older gentleman in the crowd, his hat tipped to reveal a balding head; “He looks like you, Ingo,” Emmet says, his voice teasing. “Like us,” his brother quickly corrects, adjusting the hat on his own head that he wears to cover the hairline that’s been slowly creeping backwards ever since he turned 16. They spare one more glance at the photo before turning the page.
>> Cyllene is a national hero— her sword is displayed proudly in a plexiglass container in Jubilife City Hall beneath a regal portrait. She is a celebrated figure, her name spoken with respect all throughout the region.
Somewhere in Sinnoh a boy grows up— the youngest member of a most prestigious bloodline. He has her face; her aloof, stoic demeanor; lacks her physical strength but has all of her ambition. It’s never enough. His parents are wealthy enough to buy him everything he could want but give nothing he needs. “Why can’t you be more like your cousins?” “Why aren’t you top of your class?” He can’t connect with his peers. He can’t even connect with most Pokemon. One night, a Zubat flies into his room through an open window. He guides the small, blind creature back out; eventually over the course of weeks it becomes routine. “I’ll show them someday,” Cyrus whispers to the Pokemon, now clinging to the ceiling above his bed, “I’ll create something perfect.”
>> The name Laventon synonymous with scientific achievement— he is held up as one of the first great minds in the study of Pokemon. His work viewed as the foundation upon which most of the knowledge of Pokemon biology is built even to this day. Scholars of all ages, from the youngest elementary school children to graduate students study his work on the first ever Pokedex. Dozens of universities all over the world have buildings bearing his name where researchers continue his life’s work— his legacy.
In the town of Postwick in the Galar Region, an 8-year old, purple haired future Champion beams with pride when his class opens their science textbooks to chapter 2 and a photo of his ancestor is among one of the first things they see.
>> Champion Cynthia wanders the stacks of Canalave Library— it’s late, and she is restless. Normally it wouldn’t be open to visitors at this hour, “But for you, Champion, I’ll make an exception,” the librarian had said, sensing the urgency in her voice, before asking her to lock up when she finished and wishing her a good night. The ancient floors creak below her feet as she walks across them— it was her own kin who had put them down, building this library in an attempt at penance for his ultimate betrayal— to educate future generations so that perhaps they would not make his same mistake.
Finally, the Champion approaches a nondescript door at the back of the building; and as she turns the key, Cynthia is greeted by a dark, long-disused office. A large, wooden desk sits at the center of it, sprinkled in a light coating of dust. She scans the bookshelves lining the room for a moment before she finds what she’s looking for— gathering the old, handbound tome in her arms; and as she sets On Giratina And The Distortion World down on the desk, her grey eyes are reflected back at her by an old picture of her ancestor, grinning mirthfully with his Togepi.
A/N: Whaddup, I normally don’t write anything to share but I had some Thoughts™️… and my dear @shmothman convinced me to post them here.
Speaking of! The Volo + Cynthia part of this fic takes place in the same canon as their masterpiece Judgement | Forgiveness where after battling him, Volo gets sent to eeby deeby the Distortion World and earns redemption for himself, in case anyone was confused!! If reader-insert fic is your jam I definitely recommend checking it out!!

No one told me in library school that my work to-do list might start off with "Compile demons"
Yet here we are. To mark the official start of Halloweek, we present a legion (!!) of demonic postcards from the Newberry's collections.
As expected, most of the postcard devils are characteristically up to no good, e.g.:
Tumblr media
Au nom d'une Nation de, early 20th century
But a surprising number are engaged in more helpful roles, with no less than three devilish caddies, carting clubs for both human and fellow demon golfers:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Demonic caddy postcards
Unfortunately, the Newberry's postcard collections don't include what's probably the all-time greatest compilation in this sub-sub-genre: the legion of child-snatching demons featured in Monte Beauchamp's book Krampus! The Devil of Christmas.
Tumblr media
While Krampus never caught on in the U.S., European children in the early 20th century lived in fear of St. Nick's evil counterpart, whose punishment for naughty listees went way beyond lumps of coal. But don't worry -- although it might look like those sobbing children are being dragged to hell, Krampus's damnation was less than eternal. Beauchamp explained the tradition to Collector's Weekly:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On December 6, which is St. Nikolaus Day, obedient children would hop out of bed and rush to the empty shoe they’d placed outside the night before to retrieve the small gifts or treats that St. Nikolaus had left for them… Those that had been especially bad were paid a visit by Krampus, who oftentimes would place them in the wooden basket strapped across his back and cart them off to the countryside and terrorize them until they promised to be good.

REMEMBRANCE
Pairing: Denji/Female Reader
Summary: A flowerful breeze breached the pathway onto your over-studied heart, signing you off with a sense of stability. Melodic petals from irresolute trees stayed afloat from the sky and into your trail, trailing each step you tread. Spring had recently begun, which, for you, only meant more studying for the for the flowerful test season. The sun did its job at minimum wage, and the clouds spread and shifted as you continued your steps, walking down the street for a snack after vigorously studying at the library. You find an odd guy getting yelled at for dining and dashing, at your day-to-day food stand, only without the dashing part. You get a warm flush of memories when you see him. A sense of remembrance…for someone you have never met?
Tumblr media
CHAINSAW MAN MASTERLIST | TAGLIST
A/N: Denji with that awkward rizz.
this is pretty much the last repost from my ao3. gonna be posting some new pieces i’ve been working on soon!!
WORD COUNT // 2182 words
Tumblr media
A flowerful breeze breached the pathway onto your over-studied heart, signing you off with a sense of stability. Melodic petals from irresolute trees stayed afloat from the sky and into your trail, trailing each step you tread. Spring had recently begun, which, for you, only meant more studying for the flowerful test season.
Always hunched in a workbook. Pen and pencil in hand, tidy notes, and even neater grades. And with this, you, for one, considered yourself a ”schoolholic.” Much like how every student had a club that stirred their interest, you never thought of this as being strange; rather, you simply thought of school as your hobby, which you enjoyed.
You particularly loved the sense of pride you experienced after passing a test. Since you first started school, which was forever ago, you always had that exhilarating sensation of seeing an outstanding score beside your name on everything from weekly quizzes to national exams.
Many said you had gotten that trait from your “workaholic” father, you both being the same in that sense. Well, you wouldn't say that they were entirely mistaken. You were his daughter after all. He also didn't have any hobbies; instead, he made his job his hobby and damn sure gave it his all. Him getting that similar feeling of achievement as you with whatever promotion or raise he receives.
You both found the bliss addicting.
In a world full of evils and devils, you and your father focused on positive things in a world. Depending on these hobbies to satisfy yourselves; yet, loneliness seemed to still creep in. And in these moments of time, you both were normally there to comfort one another. The need between you and your father was always impactful. Particularly lately, given that he has been buried alive in his current work project and hasn't been coming home much. Leaving you alone in the house. You didn't mind because you only saw this as a chance to cram for your upcoming exams.
You stopped in place; standing in the middle of the sidewalk. An itch or scratch shook your senses. The wind howled harder as you searched for this ick. The current driving your scarf into obscure directions.
It was a meek day. The sun did its job at minimum wage and the clouds partly spread and shifted. After your routine five hours, no breaks, studying plan, you had gotten to the point of intensity that the librarian kicked you out, lecturing you to take a break like the other kids. And when exiting the building, you found yourself craving some junk food.
You remove a leaf that flew its way between your scarf and ultimately neck; the cause of your itch. You dropped the orange leaf, but before it could hit the ground, it flew along with the cooling breeze.
You puffed your scarf before continuing your steps, walking down the street toward your favorite food stand. Luckily, you still had money left over from the last time your dad gave you your allowance weeks ago.
With a step a kick's length, you found yourself passing through a variety of vendors, old and new; fresh and fit. This street was filled with vendors selling their delicious goods. Your eyes searched for your favorite stand that sold bags of cheesy nachos for cheap. The truck mostly sold baggy food, otherwise food for people who will be walking and wanted something to snack on. You enjoyed the food and talking to the owner.
The meek breeze from before picked up its pace and mixed the air with a smell of hot food, making you speed like a hog, book bag strapped to your back tightly, wallet in hand. In under a few minutes of walking you find the colorful truck you were searching for in sight. Thankfully there wasn’t a long line, except for one person your eyes picked up from the distance.
The closer you got the more features you got. Insight, you find a boy maybe a year or so younger than you, with scruffy hair that dimmed in the warm setting sunlight, standing in front of the mentioned food stand. He wore a uniform of some kind, well, not really. Just a button-up, tie, and slacks, all messily done to point out.
The voice of the owner yelling shook your eardrums, now standing no more than five feet from the truck you could actually hear what they were saying, and could tell that they were very angry. However, the boy stood there, mindlessly listening to the older males behind the stand angrily shouting at the boy who was lost in a daze and did not pay any mind to his situation.
Normally you never put yourself in anyone else's business. Mr. Kawasaki tends to never get upset or angry at a customer unless someone was trying to dine and dash him. But you felt bad for the guy, he looked tired and confused. It was test season so he probably over-studied like you, though very unlikely. Well, you just like to believe there are people like you out there. Why not think that?
You cup your cheek and shout, picking up your pace. "No worries!”
At your voice the boy seemed to break out of his daze and turned around, finding you there, making eye contact, showcasing his deep brown eyes.
You moved your gaze to Mr. Kawasaki’s confused gaze then back to the boy's eyes, back and forth. “Um, I'll pay for you," you ease, smiling at the dazed boy. When you stared into his eyes, despite it being the first time, you felt a recollection of a memory. You felt a comfort near him. You knew him. At least, you felt like you did.
Shaking off this nostalgia, you lower your book bag from your back and begin removing your colorful wallet despite the protest of Mr. Kawasaki.
As you requested the price the guy owed and began counting up your cash, Denji stared silently. Admiring you. He watched as you paid for Power's snack.
While out with that vile fiend he got paired with, she ran off and ended up ordering food she wasn’t planning on paying for, before ditching him with her tab. Denji could have just left at this point, you seemed to have it under control. He liked that.
You were calm, a little awkward but most importantly, cute overall. It was mostly the school uniform you wore he found cute, maybe it was your squiggly smile, or just the fact that you were a nice girl. For a minute the world seemed to quiet down for you two. The booming crowd and mean man disappeared also, it was just you and him, the setting sun in the background, unforgettable.
You spoke animatedly while placing your cash onto the wooden counter, lightly laughing at whatever the old guy said. Denji couldn't really hear a thing, he only awkwardly stood in place. The crowd drew back in and the pressure of the wind blew through his hair. Denji recognized this feeling in his heart, this heat in his mind, this haze behind his eye, and hell was he pissed!
Was this…love? Was he yet again blessed to meet another girl, a possible girlfriend? He unconsciously grabs his chest, feeling for his chainsaw cord, for comfort. Godammit, he shouldn't be falling in love with every girl he meets! His mouth quivered as his thoughts continued. But you're such a cute and nice girl. You're paying for Powers, but to your knowledge, his food even though he's just a mere stranger. Hell, Denji knows he wouldn't have.
Before he knew it the older man was gone, and you turned to him, beginning to place your book bag back on. While doing so a few pencils, pens, and sticky notes begin to fall out from the pocket you forgot to zip. You mutter a curse as you squat down to grab them all. Denji yet again didn’t say anything, why was he still here anyway?! He had to do something or else he’ll look like a total dork.
You place all your supplies back into your front pocket and zip them up before placing your bag on your back yet again. “Sorry ‘bout that!” Your lips quirk up for a second, smiling at him.
Denji stuttered incoherently, moving his gaze to the cracked sidewalk, while staring at the ground awkwardly his eyes picked up a black market on the ground, you must have forgotten it. Abruptly, he crouches and grabs the market, pushing it into your open hands.
“YOU FORGOT THIS ONE!” he wailed.
Okay, this guy is weird, you thought. However, he had this familiar boyish charm that lightened your heart. You smile, biting the inside of your cheek. You grip the marker from his sweaty palm, placing it on your ear. “Thanks. So...what happened?" you ask, motioning to the food stand.
“Uhhhhhh,” Denji rubbed his already messy hair, "my friend left me to pay..." he explains, his voice so tiny he's surprised you heard his response.
You pout, shifting your weight. "Aww that sucks, they must be, uh, quite the friend." You try not to say anything mean since you both are strangers but, in your opinion, that was a horrible friend, but again you didn't want to sound rude.
He unsurely nods. "Yeah, she is quite the friend?" he repeats, watching you. In his head he was thinking: what does ‘quite’ mean? Does it mean rude, stupid, loud friend? If so, that is exactly what Power would be to him.
Standing in front of him, that weird sense of nostalgia still wouldn’t go away. A river flow of clouded memories drowned your head. As Denji stared into space you pointed a finger at him. "Didn't we go to kindergarten together?"
Denji opens and closes his mouth, tilting his head. "No, I never went to school," he replies, honestly. Instantly he felt like he damned himself. Did he know you? He didn't recognize you one bit! His childhood was mostly a repeated day on a loop so most things he didn’t remember anyway.
However, he couldn’t place you in any memories, how would someone like you have ever gotten involved in his life anyway. Plus, no way he'd forgot meeting a girl as cute as you! Though, no matter how much he poked his brain nothing came!
"That's so strange," you mutter before becoming a stuttering bomb, "n-not you not going to school, which is sorta strange but it's just that I feel like I've met you before."
Denji wasn’t sure if this was you flirting with him or something, but he was overall just confused. He shakes his head and erratically gives you his hand to shake. "Well, I'm Denji!”
You thought that it was possible you both had met but logically, you didn’t recognize his name one bit. You look back into his face, observing his boyish features. When you look at him, he looks so recognizable; with such a harsh sense of remembrance, but you aren't sure when these sudden memories took place anyway.
Denji stared blankly at your extended silence, which makes you jump. "S-Sorry, I'm being weird!" you chuckled.
He shook his head. "You're being cute," he uttered.
You turn away, hoping to hide the smile that was forming on your face. You introduce yourself and tell him your name. "Nice to meet you, Denji-kun.”
Denji's mind goes blank as you unhurriedly shake his hand. Denji for one wondered if ‘kun’ was a nickname thing. It sounded cute and all. "Nice meeting ya too _____-kun!" Denji gleams, still holding your hand.
"That must mean we're meant to meet then right?" he observes. "To make the memories you have real right? I’m not very smart but that sounds reasonable!"
You were stunned for a second. Firstly, he used the male honorific for you. Secondly, you couldn't help but smile at his cute words. Very boyish indeed.
The clouds in the sky were all spread out now. It looks like different shades of orange, pink, and a little turquoise blue cotton candy under the intense light of the setting sun. It's like a scene from those cliché romance movies. It's also like a memory you have in your head, one where you're with him; it was getting late. You really should get home for curfew and to study a bit more.
You leisurely remove your hand from his, smiling down at it. "Yeah, I'd also like for them to eventually come true." You stare back up, earnestly into his young, hopeful eyes. “It was nice to meet you, Denji-kun."
He nodded, rubbing the hand you held like it was a rash. "M-Me too _____-kun." Denji doesn't know what in the hell he meant by those words before, but it felt truthful and nice, just like your smile.
That day, that odd familiar guy you met at the food stand walked back home in the dispersing sun, staring at your phone number scribbled in black marker on his pale, sweaty palm. He was kind of cute too, after all.

National Librarian Day on April 16 is a chance to be thankful for all the knowledge that librarians possess. You may think of them as book-slingers who spend all day cataloging and reshelving, but librarians play a much more important role. From children’s storytime to literacy classes, libraries offer a wealth of free public resources
Trained in Library Science, professional librarians work with complex cataloging systems to organize books, make purchasing decisions for their library, liaise with local schools and universities, organize events and programming, teach classes, and more. Their role is constantly evolving to adapt to new technology and social needs. Celebrate National Librarian Day with us and say thanks to the awesome librarians that are always on hand to help.
