The Small Back Room - Maggie's Record Shop (unhinged meta no one asked for, part 1)

I'm going to cover these in two separate posts because there are a lot. This post is going to be dedicated to the artists with multiple covers in Maggie's shop.

*This is all bonus content from The Arrival (2x1).

What is the purpose of the record shop? It's called The Small Back Room, and it's connected to Aziraphale's bookshop. And a small back room seems like a place someone would store their records.

"If I owned a record shop, I'd be more concerned about people breaking in and leaving more records behind." - Nina

And someone left more records behind. Records of "Every Day".

Aziraphale hears Gabriel sing a human song that Aziraphale is unfamiliar with, so he goes to the record shop to ask Maggie, who actually has way too many copies of "Every Day" because of a pub in Edinburgh, the place with the cemetery that has the statue of Gabriel.

There is more to it though. The pub called the Resurrectionist that plays "Every Day" over and over on the jukebox (and somewhere in America John Mulaney is cackling like a madman) now has direct ties with Aziraphale's personal life because they ended up in Maggie's record shop.

The place where they met Elspeth and Wee Morag, Mr. Dalrymple, messed with dead bodies, and where Crowley saved one woman's soul from Hell.

We heard one passage from Aziraphale's diary, and it was about the time he and Crowley went to Edinburgh that started off with them looking at the statue of Gabriel.

We know Aziraphale has more than 600 volumes of personal written history (as of 1827).

Where is he going to store records of his life on Earth? A record shop that no one other than him visits, attached to the building he owns.

The walls lined with record covers that are telling stories. Clues as to where the story is going to take us? Could they be Aziraphale's diaries or other important records Aziraphale has kept for thousands of years?

And is anyone else concerned about "Come on Over to Our Third Floor Apartment" or is that just me? Heaven is the third floor when you look at the button arrangements on the lift. ⬆️⬆️ ⬇️⬇️

Some Thoughts on Aspec Identity, Pathologization, and Disability

A lot of asexual and aromantic activism involves dismantling the notion that being asexual and/or aromantic is NOT a mental illness or medical condition, and while this is 100% true, it’s important that we in the aromantic and asexual communities recognize how our community is intrinsically linked to the disabled community. The fact of the matter is that, even though there is nothing inherently pathological about aromanticism or asexuality, our identities have historically been pathologized by society and are still often pathologized to this day.

The very first time I heard the word “asexual” used in mainstream media was in 2012 in an episode of House M.D., titled “Better Half.” For anyone who hasn’t seen it, the episode featured a side plot where an asexual couple comes into the clinic for a bladder infection, and the protagonist, Dr. House, decides that he wants to find a “medical cause” for their asexuality. This isn’t entirely unusual for the show, since a major part of House’s character is that he’s somewhat of an asshole who says a lot of blatantly offensive things and attempts to find medical causes for anything and everything. However, what makes this notable is that the subplot was resolved by House actually finding a medical cause for the patient’s asexuality and curing him of said asexuality. It was then revealed that the patient’s wife had been lying about being asexual to make her husband happy.

This was before Yasmin Benoit (an alternative fashion model who is among the most prolific asexual and aromantic community activists) publicly came out as aroace. This was before Bojack Horseman and Koisenu Futari and the 2015 Jughead comics (i.e., the ones where Jughead is confirmed to be asexual). For many people, this episode of House M.D., where asexuals are portrayed as being either liars or people who can and should be “cured,” was their first exposure to the concept of asexuality.

While this was just one episode of one tv show, it is a symptom of a much larger issue relating to the pathologization of asexuality and aromanticism. Take, for example, Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD) which was defined by the following criteria in the DSM IV-TR:

A — “persistently or recurrently deficient (or absent) sexual fantasies and desire for sexual activity”

B — “marked distress or interpersonal difficulty.”

There are certainly plenty of cases where HSDD is unrelated to asexuality and is something that causes very real struggles for the person suffering from it; I won’t deny the experiences of these people by claiming that HSDD is “just asexuality” and shouldn’t be considered a disorder at all. The reason I bring up HSDD, however, is because it has often been used to pathologize asexual patients. It wasn’t until 2013 that the DSM-5 was released and changed the diagnostic criteria to include the caveat that “If a lifelong lack of sexual desire is explained by self-identification as ‘asexual,’ then a diagnosis of female sexual interest/arousal disorder would not be made.”

While this is a step in the right direction, the addition of this caveat has not people from pathologizing asexuality. A 2015 study (linked at the bottom of the post) by Dr. Lori A. Brotto, Morag A. Yule, and Dr. Boris B. Gorzalka notes that “Various theories have been proposed to explain how asexuality should best be classified, and some have maintained that asexuality is an extreme variant of hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD)—a sexual dysfunction characterized by a lack of interest in sex and significant distress. To date, this has never been empirically examined.” (The study in question sought to empirically examine this very issue and found that “there are notable differences between AIS >40 individuals (those likely to identify as asexual) and those who meet diagnostic criteria for HSDD.”). Another article (also linked at the bottom of the post), which was written by Dr. Lori A. Brotto and Sonia Milani, states that “Various theories have been proposed to classify asexuality as a mental disorder, a sexual dysfunction, or a paraphilia.” This is all without even getting into older ideas like the concept of “sexual frigidity,” which also may have led to many asexual and aromantic people being seen as disordered.

While there is much less information on how aromanticism, specifically, has been pathologized, it’s pretty well known within the aromantic and asexual communities that people outside out our communities often group us together or consider aromanticism a subset of asexuality, so the pathologization of asexuality also affects the way aromantic people are perceived. Not to mention the fact that, historically, people who chose to remain single, and especially women who chose to remain single, were often seen as deviant or unnatural.

Regardless of whether or not we, as individuals, are actually disordered, we are often viewed as being disordered solely on the basis of our aspec identities. Furthermore, there is a lot of actual overlap between the aspec community and the disabled community. While similar research has not yet been conducted in relation to aromanticism (in fact, there is very little research at all on aromanticism), studies of asexuality have found some evidence that asexuality may be associated with both autism and schizoid personality disorder. (And, not to bring up anecdotal evidence or anything, but I have often noticed myself that the vast majority of people in online schizoid communities seem to be asexual, aromantic, or both.)

Additionally, disabled people, particularly those who are physically, intellectually, and/or developmentally disabled, are often desexualized by society and assumed by default to be incapable of having romantic and sexual relationships, experiencing sexual or romantic feelings, or understanding sex and romance. As a result, they are affected by many of the same stigmas as asexual and aromantic people, regardless of whether or not they’re aromantic and/or asexual (in addition to all the other forms of ableism that they face).

All this is to say that the asexual and aromantic communities share a lot of common ground with the disabled community. This makes it all the more important that we fight against ableism and stand in solidarity with our disabled siblings, both inside and outside aspec communities. Moreover, this makes it all the more important that we recognize the prevalence of disabled people in the asexual and aromantic communities and acknowledge the ways aspec identity and disability can intersect.

So, here’s to all the disabled aces and aros out there. Here’s to the disabled aspec people who have been treated as broken or pitied. Here’s to the nonpartnering disabled aspecs who need caretakers or otherwise can’t live alone and are struggling to navigate what that may mean for their futures. Here’s to disabled aspecs who do want a relationship, sexual, romantic, or otherwise, but who struggle not only with finding a partner who will accept their sexual/romantic orientation(s) but also with doing so with a disability that affects their relationships. Here’s to alloaros who want sexual partners but struggle with disability-related issues that affect their sex lives, such as touch aversion, incontinence (including ptsd induced bedwetting and bladder/bowel motor tics), body dysmorphia, fatigue, and/or limited mobility. Here’s to d/Deaf, hard of hearing, low vision, blind, and d/Deafblind aces and aros, who are sick of being treated as though they’re “missing out” in more ways than one on some “fundamental” part of the human experience, (namely sight and/or hearing and sex and/or romance). Here’s to the developmentally and intellectually disabled aces and aros who are tired of being treated like children as grown adults. Here’s to disabled aces and aros. You are wonderful and it is such a privilege to share a community with y’all.

When Crowley says, "You can't leave this bookshop," he means so many different things.

Of course, he means, "You can't leave behind Earth and all the things in it and about it that make you, you, and that make you happy, like your books and your hot cocoa and your mug with the angel wings and your bow ties and your ridiculous spectacles which you don't actually need but wear anyway because you think you look nifty in them (and you do, although I'll never admit it to you)" and of course, he means, "You cannot leave me, you cannot leave us, because the bookshop is our bookshop, do you remember, you said so yourself, like my car is our car."

And on some level, I think it also means, "You cannot leave humanity behind."

Because Aziraphale is a Guardian, first and foremost. The (former) Guardian of the Eastern Gate of Eden, officially, but also the Guardian of humanity.

He's been their Guardian, our Guardian, since the moment he gave Adam and Eve his flaming sword so that they might be able to warm and protect themselves, and it's my headcanon that the reason why he is the only angel who knows how babies are born* is because he regularly checked on Adam and Eve after they were expelled from the Garden and eventually helped Eve deliver her children.

And books are, according to Muriel, "like people, only portable."

This reframes Aziraphale's possessiveness over his books, the reason why he doesn't want to sell any of them. It's not selfishness, it's not ungenerousness, it's not being unangelically attached to material things. It's him being protective, it's him wanting to keep them safe, to keep them close. To keep humanity under his wings.

Leaving the bookshop behind would mean leaving behind all the people he's met, all the people who've taught him and Crowley important lessons, who've made them feel things, and all those who would have done the same for them in the future.

Poor, faithful Job, his wife, and his children; Nina and Maggie; Elspeth and wee Morag; the Resurrectionist who is both a healer and a butcher; all the beautiful, chaotic, infuriating, puzzling, sometimes evil, sometimes good, most of the times a mix of the two, humanity he's surrounded himself with for six millennia, turned into numbers and names in some celestial ledger.

I don't necessarily mean that Aziraphale's choice to go back to Heaven was the wrong one, or the right one; I don't presume to judge him; I'm not even sure he actually had any other choice, not any feasible one.

I just worry.

I trust Aziraphale's moral compass, I trust he'll do the right thing, I trust he'll always be the person Crowley fell in love with, the angel who gave away his sword out of sheer compassion and lied to God Themselves about it.

I just worry, a bit, about what leaving humanity's side for Heaven's, leaving his role as Guardian of humanity for a place of authority in the neon-light sterility and emptiness of the Upper Floors will do to him, and what it will mean for humanity.

* even Crowley, who is probably very worldly for a demon, doesn't seem to know how reproduction works in the Great Flood flashback

Nessie was a Water Horse 🐴🌊

In a previous post, I mentioned how Morag (now described as a plesiosaur) was once very mermaid-like, but Nessie actually had a switch as well. Originally, Nessie was a water horse.

“No sooner had the weary, unsuspecting victim seated himself in the saddle than away darted the horse with more than the speed of the hurricane, and plunged into the deepest part of Loch Ness, and the rider was never more seen. For long had kelpie carried on this cruel game, bringing sorrow to many a household.” Notes on the folk-lore of the north-east of Scotland by Walter Gregor (1881)

In one story, a man named MacGrigor decide to try and take on the water-horse.

“The meeting took place in the solitary pass of Slochd-Muichd, between Strathspey and Inverness. The kelpy looked as innocent as usual, and was considerably startled when MacGrigor, sword in hand, struck him a blow on the nose. The weapon cut through the bridle, and the bit, falling to the ground, was instantly picked up by MacGrigor.” Folklore of Scottish Lochs and Springs by James Murray Mackinlay (1893)

Knowing not to press his luck, MacGrigor ran for his life, ignoring the arguments of the water horse at his heels. When the water horse used magic to stop him from being able to enter his home, MacGrigor called his wife to the window, who promptly caught the stolen bit he tossed her.

The water horse was unable to enter the home due to it being protected by rowan, so MacGrigor was able to use it as blackmail to not be killed. The water horse left with many rude words.

As time went on, there were sightings of the monster over and over again with the description in newspapers constantly changing, until the moment a water horse became a plesiosaur. In 1933, George Spicer and his wife described a creature they saw run across the road in front of their vehicle.

The creature they described had a long neck, no limbs, and was close to a dragon or prehistoric animal.

In 1934, Arthur Grant was riding his motorcycle at night when he had a sighting of his own. He described it as a mix of a seal and a plesiosaur.

From then on, Nessie being a plesiosaur was pretty much set-in-stone, including for the famous “surgeon’s photograph” which is widely agreed to be an impressive hoax.

One of the forms that water horses are said to take is somewhat similar of a shape in terms of silhouettes, so perhaps that helped urge this change.

I have since decided; here's a list of all of my current ESO characters!

1. Ebonymist - My main and longest running Vestige. She's a Khajiit Nightblade with a black tabby coat and baby blue eyes. Eye of the Queen and Champion of Anequina and Blackwood. Bows and arrows are her specialty, along with alchemy (specifically Invisibility potions) and lockpicking. However she's not part of the Thieves Guild or Dark Brotherhood.

She's a very sweet and motherly Khajiit who firmly believes in the Found Family trope. Her friends are her family, her gaggle of pets are her family, Taznasi and co. from The Stitches are her family, etc. Her most recent "adoptees" are Fennorian, Ember, and Isobel. Razum Dar and her were as close to being a couple without actually being a couple. Now Ebonymist is working up the nerve to confess her feelings to Bastian Hallix.

She tends to be more on the sentimental side, holding on to anything of value (like her Urn from Coldharbor, a shield that was gifted to her by a friend who fell in battle, Jakarn's dagger he gave as thanks for helping, the like). As well as pretty much any remotely shiny object or fascinating knick knack she finds. She collects.

2. Brenda Steel-Heart - Tall, blonde, can hold her mead, and can swing a greatsword with the best, Brenda is a Nordic Dragonknight warmaiden. She is fiercely loyal to the Ebonheart Pact and her homeland of Eastern Skyrim. In fact Brenda's loyalty is so strong and she's helped the cause so much, Prince Irnskar has dubbed her "The King's Arrow".

The concept of family and friends is weird to her- she doesn't remember her biological family (since Mannimarco wiped her memories), and she moves around so much she doesn't have time to make friends. Instead she considers her fellow Pact soldiers her Shield Brothers and Sisters. Centurion Gjakil and his wife Irna are the closest thing Brenda has to a "family" family, after she helped save their farm. (And her dogs, of course! All five of them.)

As far as romance goes, her heart is open. Woman or man, lady or lord, Dunmer or Nord, she doesn't care. Strangely enough she has a thing for Dark Elves. Specifically one Morag Tong assassin. Which would definitely be breaking some protocols if word got out, so they have a long distance relationship and exchange letters as often as they can.

3. Ursalie Fanstiana - Bretons are known for their innate ability for magic. Ursalie is no exception. She is a skilled mage in her own right, though she is just starting out and getting her feet under her. "Dark" magic and crystal magic seems to be her specialty, but she has been known to summon the odd unstable minor daedra or two (whether its intentional or not is unknown).

She is terribly shy and has always had trouble making friends. Her summoned familiars are her more preferred company, though she's been making more efforts to open up more. Unfortunately her lack of experience in friendships has led to a few mishaps of not reading the room; Poor Ursalie has fallen for Jakarn's silky smooth words on more than one occasion, and Darien Gautier's shameless flirting has had her staying up overthinking conversations more times than she cares to admit. Crafty Lerisa has been helping her though.

Ursalie is the least developed of my Vetiges, as I haven’t played much of the Daggerfall Covenant storyline yet but I still adore her.~

4. Reldaleyna and Peliion - Reldaleyna comes from a long line of respectable Altmer mages. From a young age she excelled at the arcane arts, and was trained by her grandparents in the art of upper echelon etiquette and borderline royalty manners. She is very popular amongst her family's circle of nobles.

Peliion, on the other hand, is a feral gremlin of a Wood Elf with absolutely no concept of social graces or presence of manners. He claims he was raised "in the woods" (which would not be entirely unusual for a Bosmer, but he also claims he was raised by wolves). Thankfully very few people take his claims seriously.

They are dating and very much in love.

By thalmor she is considered to be "defected" Altmer (because of her height) which is very unpleasnt for her. She is very carring person and rather lovely. She doesn't like to solve problems with voilent but dyplomacy.

★ Felicianna Evric : Vestige ,She/Her 28 years old , Imperial/Breton. Born and raised in Daggerfall ,after the death of her parents and she has met Vanus Galerion and later on she was adopted by him. Both talented in sword and magic. Very bubbly person

★ Fjoanna Cloud-Breaker : Agent of Dagerfall ,She/They 30 years , Nord/Altmer (High elf). Right hand for emperor Uriel and spy in daggerfall who investigate the circumstances of King Lysandus. Fjoanna is a person with short temper,who will always tell what she think.

★Ayija : Eternal Champion, She/Her 16 years old ,Khajiit/Ohmes-raht. A clueless kid who managed to defeat Jagar Tharn.

llethym hlaarothan: dunmer, m, 34. the wannabe buoyant armiger. once had an affair with orvas dren's wife, amiliah dren, and gave her a child. got sent to prison for that one. he's charming but in an often annoying way, and always sets his ambitions too high. in one timeline becomes the hlaalu grandmaster and thieves guild master thief - as well as "honorary" buoyant armiger. lacking innate magical talent, he focuses his mystical energies on enchanting. main skills: long blade, enchant, speechcraft.

malcius: colovian cyrod, m, 49. the maran monk. grew up an orphan raised by maran priests. a genuinely kind, pacificistic soul who can't bear to see others hurt - most of the time. by day, maran monk; by night, vigilante defending the weak from the wicked. but one day his nocturnal antics got too far ahead of him, and landed him in prison. in one timeline becomes primate of the imperial cult in vvardenfell. gifted not only in the martial arts but in the practice of healing. main skills: restoration, hand-to-hand, marksman (blunt arrows usually).

qismehti gra-lubakt: half-orc redguard, f, 26. the western knight. raised in a imperial legion veteran's commune nearby blacklight on the mainland. grew up in a weird cultural space - part imperial, part orcish, part redguard, part redoran. but she's never really had trouble reconciling it. she's very self-assured and self-serious. very chivalrous. in one timeline becomes the redoran grandmaster. a talented warrior, through and through. main skills: long blade, axe, heavy armor.

hmmmm i can't off the top of my head think of characters i like that are popularly outright disliked but i do like a lot of the rare blades and i don't feel like anybody gives them enough love. like can we please all look at agate for at least 10 more hours

she likes rocks and she's scared of bugs. and she says be bold, be brave, but be. careful.
