I usually avoid Parent traps AU just because I dislike it as a setup, but when it comes to Anidala a bitch is desperate, and this was a cute and fun one, I really enjoyed it!

A Worthy Sacrifice

Chancellor Palpatine has dropped the act and decided to rule the galaxy openly as Darth Sidious. His reign wouldn’t be half as successful without his unhinged attack dog Darth Vader, a much rumoured warbringer who appears in black robes with a saber red as blood and brings even the strongest revolutionaries to their knees. Padmé is not only fighting for her home country but the freedom of the known regions and she is desperate to turn the tides of this war which is why she agrees to the deal Sidious offers her: A child with this favourite Sith Lord in exchange for her home: Naboo.

This is one of my favourite fics with this trope!

[Dreamling Week Day 5: Jealousy] The Feeling of Freedom

This is from my Dreamling Hamilton AU where Hob lost his memory during the American Revolutionary War and now goes by Captain Gideon "Leon" Roberts.

You don't need to read the story in AO3 to understand what's going on. 😊 Just imagine it's a Regency AU but Hamilton is in it.

CW: period-typical homophobia because this is set in 1789 Albany, New York.

(Because I fucking love Bridgerton's idea of playing modern songs as orchestral music during balls, this piano cover of Only Love Can Hurt Like This by Paloma Faith is the song I imagined Dream and Hob danced to, but at 75% speed. Please listen to it! It's very lovely, and the song's lyrics are highkey dreamling vibes. 🖤)

"May I have this dance?"

Dream's head snaps towards Colonel Hamilton, who has jokingly (and with an unnecessary gentlemanly flourish), held his hand out to Captain Roberts.

"No, Alex," Captain Roberts replies, amused at his friend's antics but keeping his hands firmly behind his back. "Go dance with Mrs. Hamilton. I have no intention of having my feet be stepped on tonight."

"Slander!" Colonel Hamilton exclaims, eyes bright and merry and not offended at all. "You forget, my dear Leon, that I was one of the people who taught you how to dance."

"And you forget that it was Monsieur Lafayette who actually put me through my paces while you and Laurens danced like a couple of attendees at a bacchanalia."

"Oh, come now, it's a slow song they're playing next," Colonel Hamilton wheedles. "And yes, I have asked the lovely Ms. Jessamy to tell me the order of the songs to be performed so that I may know when to ask you for a dance, for I know you dislike fast-paced music with a passion. You're welcome. Now dance with me to gentle the sting of your cruel words."

Dream takes this as an opportunity to smoothly insert himself into the conversation. And as the party's host, he can do whatever he damn well please and Colonel Hamilton will just have to grit his teeth and deal with it.

"Ah, Captain Roberts, there you are," he says, and steps next to Leon. "Excuse me, Colonel Hamilton. If I might steal the good captain away? He has promised to dance the next song with me."

Captain Roberts hides his surprise well, but Colonel Hamilton's brows shoot up to his forehead as he looks between Dream and Captain Roberts. "Really."

"Yes," Dream says simply, then holds out a gloved hand for Captain Roberts to take. "Shall we take our places, Captain? The song is about to start."

"O-oh, yes. Yes, of course," Captain Roberts says. He takes Dream's hand and allows him to lead them both to the dance floor, Colonel Hamilton following them with his gaze.

There are other couples already on the dance floor, most of them ladies who are laughing gaily with their friends at the opportunity to be able to dance with one another at a formal ball. Dream knows from their daydreams which ones actually have romantic feelings for each other.

He is glad to be able to provide this chance for them.

"When exactly did you ask me to dance, Mr. Murphy?" Captain Roberts asks when they were out of earshot from the colonel. He doesn't sound angry at Dream for being presumptuous, at least. Just confused. "Have I missed a social contract entirely? Again?"

"No," Dream says, keeping his voice low in case anyone is eavesdropping. "I was only trying to remove you from your conversation with Colonel Hamilton. I couldn't help but notice that you looked uncomfortable."

His body language certainly implied as much, though Dream does not divulge the entire reason for his interrupting the conversation, which is that he doesn't want Captain Roberts to dance with another man. Even if that man were his friend, Colonel Hamilton.

Especially if that man were his friend, Colonel Hamilton.

"Ah." Captain Roberts glances to the side where Colonel Hamilton is still watching them curiously. He shuffles his feet a little. Then, catching himself doing it, stops entirely. "It's not that I am uncomfortable with him. He is my friend, after all. It is only..." He sighs and lowers his voice. "I do not want to dance with him. If I were to do so, I am afraid it will only dredge up old memories that have grown more painful with time. We...had a mutual friend, back in the war. Alex always used to dance with him."

In his mind, Captain Roberts is remembering a young man laughing together with Colonel Hamilton, their heads bent together as they danced near a bonfire, fingers intertwined and eyes speaking volumes of their regard for each other.

Dream recognizes the man as Lieutenant Colonel John Laurens. He had often dreamed about abolishing slavery and growing old with a red-haired man. He has been in his sister's realm for seven years now.

Through Captain Roberts's memories, Dream also sees Colonel Hamilton's devastated features when he received the letter from John Laurens's father, informing them of John's death.

He sees how Captain Roberts, along with Mrs. Hamilton and the Hamilton children, slowly but surely coaxed Colonel Hamilton back to living his life to the fullest.

Alexander Hamilton may never be the same again after John Laurens's death, but he would have been in a worse state had Captain Roberts, their mutual friend from the war, not been there to help him recover.

It is exactly what Hob would have done.

And while the man in front of Dream might be calling himself Captain Roberts now due to his memory loss, in Dream's eyes, he will always be his beloved Hob Gadling.

"I see," Dream says. He spends a moment wondering if he was in the wrong about interrupting the two men's conversation the way he did, now knowing about Colonel Hamilton's regard for the late lieutenant colonel, but decides that he does not regret his action at all, not when it gave him this opportunity to dance with Captain Roberts. "I hope Colonel Hamilton knows what a good friend you are to him."

The captain chuckles and tugs at his left ear. A gesture that is becoming beloved to Dream, as it indicates the man's shy pleasure. "I tend to remind him when he has passed the three-hour mark talking about the Constitution."

"Three?" Dream repeats, teasingly. "Then you must have more patience than the rest of New York's politicians put together."

Captain Roberts laughs, but does not refute the claim. It brings Dream joy to see the man at ease in his presence, though he notes that he still looks a little uncomfortable, glancing this way and that.

And in his mind, Dream sees exactly what he's worrying about. Countless, faceless, well-dressed people whispering about him, eyeing him with disgust, spitting at the face of his happiness.

That will not do.

Dream takes Captain Roberts's hand on his own again until the man looks up at him.

"Do not think of them," Dream says. "While we dance, look only at me and forget the rest of the world."

It is a bold statement to make, but Captain Roberts nods, and flushes prettily, eyes on Dream's, pupils dilating. "I...yes, of course. As you say, Mr. Murphy."

The image in his mind changes as he speaks. He is now thinking about the warmth of Dream's hand in his, and how close the two of them will be, while dancing. He imagines his hand on Dream's shoulder, and Dream's hand on his lower back, their breaths mingling, and feeling Dream's exhale on his lips.

He is almost shivering in want.

Dream pulls him closer and makes his daydreams a reality as the music starts.

After, when the last of the musical notes have faded and the people have started to clap for the musicians, Captain Roberts looks pleasantly dazed, and his cheeks are flushed with exertion and pleasure both.

Dream has yet to let go of him. He does not want to. Not yet, at least. And as the party's host, he can do whatever he damn well please and everyone will just have to deal with it or leave. The front door is unlocked. They are free to remove themselves from Dream's presence whenever they wish.

As long as Captain Roberts stays, Dream does not care about anyone else. Jessamy, Lucienne, and the others will deal with the other guests for him.

"Ah, Mr. Murphy," Colonel Hamilton says, walking up to them now that the song is over. "May I steal Leon away?"

"I'm afraid not, Colonel Hamilton," Dream replies smoothly and genially, unwilling to relinquish Captain Roberts's hand just yet. And for his part, the captain looks content to be where he is, holding Dream's hand, also unwilling to let go. "You see, Captain Roberts has allowed me the pleasure of having his next two dances, which are the last of the evening. I believe he is effectively mine for the rest of the night."

So I’m finally getting my friend to read Gideon the ninth, and she’s going in with mostly no knowledge. It was their idea to play a game and guess what characters are like from art I sent her and the characters names. She doesn’t know who’s a cavalier and who’s a necromancer.

She actually thought Judith and Marta were boys which is fair in all honesty bc I kept saying they looked like 12 year old boys in British uniforms for an American revolutionary war reenactment.

Judith:

Okay so Judith Deuteros, I feel like she's the 'older sister' who thinks she can do everything herself but she cant. A bit rude and super loyal until proven otherwise

Now for Marta, autocorrect decided to change Dyas to DYAS because I yelled about her being cool when I was reading htn. I have no shame, she’s definitely hot and definitely out of my league.

Marta:

Okay, misS DYAS 😂 is the one who can actually do everything on her own but lets people help her just because its less work. Direct but nice overall

[here is where I explained why it autocorrect to DYAS without saying it was because she was really cool]

To explain Ianthe, I sent her the cast before and they said they thought Ianthe was pretty so I had been sending non spoiler fanart of Ianthe which is surprisingly hard. I get that bone arm Ianthe is hot, but like there’s so little of regular Ianthe.

Ianthe:

Okay, social bitch whos not afraid to stab you in the back and will do ANYTHING, and I mean ANYTHING to protect her twin

Then I proceeded to tell her that I know only one person who liked Naberius and he’s objectively wrong. (he decided he would stop defending Naberius after I reminded him that babs threatened children)

Issac:

Little ginger boy who DESPISES being called short, but also super agile and good at his job (wtv it is)

I feel like he's crushing on a girl but idk who and he gets flustered way too easy, it kinda puts him in trouble, cause he cant lie

Jeannemary:

Ooo I like her name too

Shes basically Gabi from aot

Lemme tell y’all, this absolutely crushed me. If you like aot and you were watching it as it came out or just saw the memes, no one liked Gabi. I thought Gabi was fine but the idea of people hating Jeannemary made me very sad.

Abigail:

The type of girl who volunteers at retirement homes. She likes to read and be alone whenever she's not on the job. Barely talks to anyone, she prefers to listen to people

(She was proud of this one because I said nifty, this is like modern au Abigail minus her fun, funky parts. If I were describe Abigail, I would say unhinged academia and move on)

Magnus:

Absolute lady magnet, charming smile and flirty eyes. Crushes on Abigail but she's oblivious to love so he kinda just admires from afar. Only default is he lets his emotions control him, easy to manipulate

(She was very happy when I told her Abigail and Magnus were married)

Now much to my dismay, this heathen thinks glasses are sexy so she thinks Palamedes is hot which hurts the part of my soul that headcanons Pal as aroace, but putting that aside, I said please don’t ship these characters I will literally cry. This concerned her and I had tell her they were cousins.

Palamedes:

So Pal, real nerdy, super good with anything thats tech. But of a sarcastic brat, and gets along better with animals than humans

(This is almost entirely inaccurate but I’m not a heartless monster so they can have this for now.)

Camilla:

Good with math, can do decently in tech too because she observed her cousin work so often. She's a pro at detecting when ppl are lying and doesn't let their bullshit pass ever.

Now I was very excited for what they would say about Dulcinea/Cytherea and Pro mostly because I wanted to see if the guess leaned more towards the actual Dulcie and Pro or not.

Dulcinea:

She's a master at deception though. She likes flowers and jewelry and will flirt with any man (or woman) to help her own cause. She doesn't do murder, but she can easily knock out a man. She just flirts to get what she wants

I was absolutely dumbfounded that she basically guessed Cytherea’s whole character, aside from the murder. I was just thinking god damn and I tried my best not to show it (this is very hard and I understand why my friend who got me into the series spoiled so much on accident). Also Cytherea is her favorite based on their current assumptions.

Protesilaus:

As I was scrolling through the Topgun tag on AO3 the other night, I realized that I was starting to see the same tropes and AUs over & over again. And while not a bad thing at all, personally, I'm just starting to get a little bored of reading the same story over & over.

Modern/No Fallout! Fallout 4 Misfits Couple Headcannons!

The Misfits Couple is the ship name for Wolf/Zeke/Alex (AU depending) x Gage x Danse x MacCready x Hancock x Preston.

Talks of weed use, drug addictions (past), and violent tendencies/anger issues.

Gage, MacCready and Danse are security guards! MacCready works for a bar, Danse for a technology museum, and Gage for a theme park.

Preston and Hancock are actors in American Revolutionary War skits at the local historical museum! Students love them so much, they barely realize it's educational.

(AU DEPENDENT) Wolf is a singer, and produces covers for 1950s love songs.

(AU DEPENDENT) Zeke works at the same theme park as Gage, but as a refreshment stand employee. His nickname with the kids is Nuka, because that's his favorite soda.

(AU DEPENDENT) Alex is getting his bachelor's in psychology, and plans on becoming a pediatric psychologist.

Danse and MacCready works the night shifts mainly.

Preston loves The Food Network. If he's home, he's got the TV on and he's writing down new recipes to try.

Gage and Hancock enjoy felting and crocheting, but won't admit it. Gage took felting up as an anger management thing, and Hancock took up crocheting to cope with his drug addictions as a young adult.

MacCready has a love-hate relationship with analog horror. On one hand, he loves the creativity of it all. On the other hand, it makes him paranoid, especially if the only ones home are him and Danse, and Danse is asleep.

Danse is banned from the kitchen after Preston watched him make a small fire in the microwave by forgetting to add water to his instant mac & cheese.

In fact, unless it's the AU with Wolf, Preston is the only one allowed in the kitchen, because he's the only one who isn't a danger to himself (Zeke, Alex, Danse, MacCready) or others (Danse, Hancock, Gage).

Hancock smokes weed occasionally. Has tried to get everyone to do it at least once. Has only succeeded in making MacCready a stoner, and Danse will occasionally join in, but he's a bit of a hard ass. Preston usually acts as the babysitter, as Gage... well...

Gage can't smoke weed, it brings out his violent tendencies (which are usually under control with a mixture of medications and therapies).

Show Off Tag

One of my earliest friends in fandom, creative and magnificent @supernovadragoncat, tagged me in this meme; a show off dare for fanfic writers. Something most of us are hesitant to do unless ‘forced’, so thanks for the tag! 😊

The Rules: Post the 5 fics you are most proud of then tag 5 people.

I chose deliberately fics from different fandoms I have written, as all of them had a special meaning to me at the time.

1. This Time, We'll Do Better (A Song of Ice and Fire, Sansa Stark/ Sandor Clegane)

This was my “magnum opus”, a culmination of my desire to write a longfic with various side plots alongside the main story, with adventures, events, ups and downs – and using a devious theme of time-traveling to allow Sansa to do stuff that might not be believable in the strictly canon setting… It took exactly two years to write and post and it was all fun!

2. The Triangle (’A Song of Ice and Fire’, Sansa Stark/Sandor Clegane/Jaime Lannister)

A bit like above, also a longfic but written much earlier when I wanted to explore a topic that had long fascinated me: the Arthurian love triangle. So I did scratch that itch and it was extremely satisfying!

3. Jumping from the Ropes (’A Song of Ice and Fire’, Sansa Stark/ Sandor Clegane)

My only modern fic – set in a professional wrestling world that I followed avidly at the time. I didn’t think I would have enjoyed writing modern fic as much as did (as required by a fic exchange prompt) - and even continued it with a follow-up sequel! However, I think that might have been it about modern fic for me...

4. Seven Autumns With or Without You (’Washington’s Spies,’ Benjamin Tallmadge/Caleb Brewster)

Hmmmm, I seem to have a penchant for sprawling fics… This too is a story covering the whole lifetime and the full love story of its central characters in the midst of American Revolutionary War. Sweet and bittersweet – that is my jam!

5. To The Ends Of This Earth (’Our Flag Means Death’, Edward ‘Blackbeard’ Teach/Stede Bonnet)

This TV series blew me over like it did so many others – what a breath of fresh air and what an absolutely amazing love story! So I just had to write something about it, starting with ‘3 times when’ and then taking it to an AU direction. This is also my latest fic - how time flies...

I miss writing fic, but increased work responsibilities and stresses have kind of come in the way... However, I know of others who have had a lull and then started writing again, so I am hopeful that I will too, eventually!

Just going through the gay subtext tag as one does, and it’s just amazing to see so many characters and series mentioned that really center on super masculine environments, or, more specifically, homosocial groupings--and by that i mean a singly gendered group to the exclusion of womanhood and femininity. and so even as these blogs are shipping two men together, both characters get to preserve their masculinity as they work in and for the proliferation of their masculine groups--boat crews, armies, sports teams, rock bands.

It’s such a shift from the prominent understandings of gay coding from the past 100 years, where you’d be looking for the “sensitive boys,” lovers of the arts (and those arts they loved would often be threaded through queer history), the bullied and lonely who find that one true friend and maybe an inspirational teacher along the way. It was a pretty Platonic understanding of queerness in the relational aspect for better or worse. And it centered the swishy and effeminate for their marginalization.

The new “gay subtext” draws focus to more masculine characters who tend to exist easily enough in hyper masculine spaces and groups without discomfort. You’ll see comic characters like Bill and Ted loving their bros or militant types like in Master & Commander constructing intricate rituals among a whole hoard of other men. And shows like or Black Sails and Our Flag Means Death are making these kinds of gay relationships narratively explicit, but by situating them within a highly masculine context, even a typical effeminate character like Stede is validated through his participation and upholding of the masculinist exploits of the crew and the patriarchal laws of the sea.

In these iterations, the emotional arcs of characters can hyperfocus on the challenges of deviant sexuality and coming to the conclusion that, actually, its not really disruptive or deviant to these environments. There’s more humorous levity in a lot of these depictions, which I really appreciate. But does the audience’s allowance for that levity come from a stronger sense of security for these characters? A masculinist gay sexuality tightens the knot of patriarchal power in a lot of these depictions, creating repackaged separate gender spheres that exclude women from participating in masculine exploits. Yes, they offer representation of transness, and, in fact, i’ve noticed a lot of trans-masc folk being drawn to these kinds of depictions, but the stories instate a culture in which trans folk have been assimilated into gendered categories that have merely accepted trans people without reducing hierarchical separation.

when the netflix wave of avatar the last airbender fans arrived into the fandom, it was striking who they shipped: a pairing that had been rare in the fandom up to that point. not only the who but the how stood out. these two male characters were loveable as goofs, as clowns, as bros--just guys being guys. this pairing was perfect for fluff and modern au’s. they were devoid of the angst and passion that had previously marked the ships (and the infamous shipping wars lol), because they as a pairing were kind of devoid of the show’s central integrated themes. while together, they could suggest a resistance to empire, their time together in the show and in fan portrayals is marked by tropes of masculine revolution--protecting/saving women, shallow and befuddled emotional communication, and urges toward revolutionary violence. these are not bad things necessarily. the interest in these motifs simply stands out in this wing of the fandom when we compare it to the broader pacifist and feminist center of the show. the willfulness of this audience to focus on characters that provide potential for more traditionally masculine themes is telling when you have actual protagonists, aang and katara, who embody and force the audience’s contention with feminine values and their integration into a larger understanding of power structures, especially colonial power structures.

when i look at this trend of centering homosocial gay relationships more broadly, what i hope is that it’s simply making a pocket for the experiences and values considered masculine to exist peacefully and without shame. everyone has the potential to experience and participate in them, after all, and they can be important. my fear, though, is that it indicates acceptance of a “diversified” patriarchy, in which defined representation of diverse identities is a more important narrative goal than questioning broader hierarchies of power that limit and oppress the characters and force them into definitional boxes, especially definitional boxes that allow them to retain their unearned societal privileges over others. there’s just some level of responsibility that one can take when they choose their brotp’s and create content to still illustrate the limits of homosocial gay representation, to see how little two gay bros do to narratively disrupt much of anything.

Most Character Development: You’d think it’d be Arkyn as the OC I’ve roleplayed for what, 5 or so years off and on? But I honestly think it may be Yrsa

Trash Muse: Shirka. He is a trashy narcissistic idiot and I love him.

The Meme-Lord: Zephyr, at least in modern AU.

Most Likely to Start a War: Obviously Elias. He’s a literal revolutionary.

Worst Personality: Probably early-on Shirka, when his narcissism is at its peak. He gets better as time goes on and the god in his necklace keeps lecturing him.

Best Personality: Probably Arix. He’s a very wholesome boy.

Best Singer: I’ve got a bard named William, but he’s not on tumblr, so instead I’ll say Zephyr. He likes to do karaoke cause he has an insane range (modern AU).

Most Attractive Muse: Shirka I mean, it’s subjective. My hottest OC is probably a dryad named Illyin, but much like the aforementioned William, she’s not on tumblr. Of the muses on my blog atm, I’d say I feel Yrsa is most attractive, at least to me.

Biggest Heart: Arix. Man had a traumatic upbringing, forgot it all, and was smothered in love. He’s got such a big heart my sweet draconic boy.

Falls in Love Quickest: Ooooh that’s a hard one. I’d say Shirka because he’s the flirtiest, but that doesn’t mean he’d fall quickly. Instead, it might be Yrsa. She’s also the type to never tell them, even lie to their face when confronted.

Most Likely to Drop Their Phone in the Toilet: Easily Shirka. He’s so dumb.

Ice Ruler: Morph, probably. Which is funny, considering I have Freja as an ice elemental user and Arkyn. But if anyone’s got that cold personality when it comes to personal relationships, Morph is a lot like that.

The Edgelord: Julian, oh lord. To be fair, it’s hard not to write a character with his past as edgy.

Most Tragic Backstory: Aggh, I torture so many OCs though! Probably Julian. He’s literally unable to die, piloting his own dead body around like a combat puppet. That or Arkyn, Arkyn reallllllly has it rough.

Best Case of Puberty: Hmm... I’d say... Jericho, prior to dying and getting isekai’d into Aldrick’s body. He went from background character commoner to looking like a sorcerer king.

Most Awkward: Julian. He’s not really had much of a chance to socialize ever since he died and became a revenant.

Busy Bee: Arix. He can’t sit still, always has to be doing something.

Most Clueless: Freja. To be fair, she’s missing lots of her memory.

Most Likely to Forget Their Wallet at Home: Yrsa. At her stage in life, money has little meaning, and she often forgets she even has a coin purse.

Best Dressed: Elias on most days, Zephyr when he has to attend any formal events in his modern AU (after all, modern Zephyr is heir to a fashion mogul)

Biggest Flirt: SHIRKA

Most Dramatic: Shirka

Least Likely to Show Up Late: Elias

One With Weirdest Habit: Haven’t thought this through much, maybe Jericho as he’s literally from another world and his behaviors don’t always add up perfectly. If we’re counting retired muses, Saphernion has some strange habits as she’s essentially a banshee and has a... complicated past where she’d pick up strange habits just to survive.

Most Likely to Be Caught at the Gym: Unsure what they mean by ‘caught?’ If it’s caught staring at someone, definitely Shirka. If it’s being spotted there when you wouldn’t expect to see them there, Zephyr. Gotta stay in shape, even as a gamer (once again, modern AU).
