This is so cool! Finding animal life beneath hydrothermal vents is incredible! Some of the things they found in the underwater cave systems in earth's volcanic crust include snails and tube worms. These tube worms alongside chemosynthetic bacteria, use the hydrogen sulphide in the chemical plumes from thermal vents by oxidising it to create energy and sugars to survive. How cool is that?!

I think this article also really demonstrates how important it is to conserve and protect lesser known ecosystems and species.

In a discovery by researchers from Leiden University in the Netherlands, offshore wind turbines have become a haven for benthos — the community of marine organisms that live in, on or around the seafloor.

There are more soil animals per square meter living in the foundations of offshore wind farms than on the floor of the North Sea, a press release from Leiden University said.

“The turbine foundations provide hard substrate for settlement in areas where these habitats have never been present before. Except for islands, there are now structures spanning the entire range from sea floor to sea surface,” Jan Vanaverbeke, a postdoctoral researcher at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, told EcoWatch in an email. “A lot of organisms, normally living on hard substrates (rocks, bio- or geogenic reefs) have larvae with pelagic stadia, drifting in the water column and trying to find a suitable place to settle and grow into an adult. The turbines provide such substrate in areas where it has never been present before.”

In the area surrounding the wind farms, fishing is not allowed, meaning fish can flourish.

“Banning fisheries from offshore wind farms has positive effects as (1) wind farms provide a safe place for fish (where some species find a lot of food), and (2) the sea floor is not disturbed and therefore long-living animals have a chance to actually live long (they are not impacted/killed by the fishing gear that is passing),” Vanaverbeke told EcoWatch.

So my Movie!Clancee drawing is being a pain in the ass and I’m tired and sad, so I’m gonna talk about the Movieverse element of nature.

So I was talking with @impulsivefanwriter back in May of 2022 and we came up with the idea that the Movieverse element of nature was split up into four parts by the Master of Nature of the previous generation, and guess who that master was?

No, seriously. Guess.

Yes, Dareth.

This Dareth.

His Movieverse counterpart is the Master of Nature.

ANYWAY-

For some yet to be specified reason, the element decided to be a bit silly and get unstable. So, to combat this, Dareth split up the element between his three adopted kids (well, one officially adopted and two he honorarily splits custody with).

Who are these kids you make ask?

Clancee, Benthomaar, and Dove/Fugidove.

Anyway, Nature is split into four distinct categories to fit each master-

Plants (Clancee)

Animals (Dareth)

Birds (Dove)

Marine Life (Benthomaar)

So yeah not much else to to story. That’s a HC.

Ig I can talk about what each EM does with their powers, that’s fun.

Clancee mainly uses his powers to grow new plants for Misfortune’s Flowers, as well as creating very pretty decor and arrangements.

Bentho is the most carefree, in that his powers go to making his father and brother coral bouquets, as well as taking care of and chatting with other sea life.

Dareth helps our injured and in need animals when he can, and asks some of the tougher ones to teach him fighting moves (most of which are ineffective against people but he’s trying ok?).

Dove just like running his bird shop (he has one of those btw) and talkin with the birbs. He also feeds birds around the city. He’s very happy with this. Oh yeah and he also summons birds to be a menace to people he doesn’t like.

If I could design my human Bentho design... He's literally a butch in my brain. Like my outfit headcanons I brought up earlier are the same, as in baggy shorts and shirts or short sleeved/no sleeve shirts. He could either be a marine biologist, or an ocean activist, or perhaps even both, and also a guy that really enjoys sports and surfing in his past time.

People assume he's an animal whisperer because they listen to him but he just has that princely charm yk...

He wears almost similar jewelery as he does in my Merlopian design but he doesn't wear them during beach days because he doesn't want to lose them in the sand or the ocean. Human Bentho would definitely have a pet dog, but a big one ish kind of.

Also, not that I can really make up a backstory that's similar to canon. But just to mention Kalmaar, he doesn't hate surface dwellers because they're inferior since he's also human, he just has a superiority complex, I guess... He killed Trimaar in order to gain a higher position in whatever organisation Trimaar was in, Benthomaar moved on from that life after he rebelled. However he did this on his own due to the Ninja not being present in this case (but honestly, I kind of see Skylor helping him out)

Kai water ninja

- Bentho, can you tell me how Niyad defeated Wojira? Remember you told me. - This caught Kai's attention, he wanted to ask his older sister about Jay how to get water out of him. At the window, Nya was talking to Bentho. Unbeknownst to the two of them, Kai began to listen in on their conversation.

She merged with the sea. Bento answered without looking at her.

- But how. - Nya asked stubbornly

She gave her power to the ocean. She merged with him. Masters of any element can merge with their elements, well, Nia could, so anyone can. said the prince. Nii looked at the window where the fish were swimming at the moment. Although Kai couldn't see her face, he could understand what she was up to. And he doesn't like it. Bento noticed it too. “You can’t merge Nya. Only the master of water can do this, only your brother. But he is younger than all of you ... And it will be deplorable for him. Although Niyad defeated Wojira, she eventually died. She disappeared and became the ocean. Nia turned away from him. She began to replay in her mind what her Bentho had said. - Nia. Kai's voice snapped her out of her reverie. Glancing at her younger brother, she saw that his eyes reflected concern. He looked at her intently, as if he already knew what she was up to. - Nia. Kai's voice came again. - I heard your conversation with Bento. Can I save everyone from Wojira?

- No Kai, you can't. was all she could say to her brother.

"But why, this is the only way to save Jay, you, Lloyd, the crew, all Ninjago!" – said Kai and seriously looked at his sister.

We can't lose you! You're too young! she shouted in anger at Kai .

- And what to do to wait until we all die? Hiding around the world shaking with fear waiting for your end! If I can save everyone I can do it! - shouted Kai and was interrupted by Nya

- No Kai, you won't do it! Nia said quietly, covering her face with her hands. "We'll find a way to save Jay and keep Kalmaar from winning." - She knew that if he merges with the sea, Kai will not be the same. That she would never see her little brother again. Kai is a little eight-year-old boy, looking down on everyone, even younger than Lloyd, when he was a child, who fought with them on an equal footing and became the master of Water for six years, saved the world from the Mistress at eleven. Kai, who was the soul of their team. And a great singer for his age, Dareth did a great job turning Kai into Ninjago's most famous singer.

Warmth, something warm enveloped her. Nia didn't need to open her eyes to see who it was. When she felt bad or sad, Kai always hugged her like now. Always her younger brother knew how to help everyone in a moment of sadness. - We will definitely save Jay - finally sounded the soft voice of his brother. - And not only him, but the whole city. Breaking out of the hug, Nya put a hand on his brother's shoulder. - Now let's rest. Everything will be fine.

After these words, Nya only now realized how tired she was after the battle with Kalmaar. So, without any objection, she walked over to the couch where Jay lay. As she got closer, she heard his hoarse breathing. His fair skin has become paler, and a grimace of anguish is reflected in his usually cheerful face. This kind of beloved hurts Nia. Taking his hand, she said softly, "Don't worry, I'll fix it." Just be patient a little more.

The sun began to rise over Ninjago. And in one building, everyone was sleeping except for the water ninja. Kai looked out the window at the city, where people used to walk, cars drove, but now it is flooded and from now on only marine life can live here. Goosebumps ran through Kai's body at the mere thought of water. He was always afraid of water, and of giving up without a fight, but as much as it scared him, water also attracted him. Maybe because he was the son of a water master and became a water master himself.

Standing up, Kai looked around the room looking at his family. Kai loved having Nya join the ninja and had a bunch of older siblings who loved and cared for him. Cole, strong as a rock, Kai quickly found a common language with him and even taught him how to dance. Now Cole was sleeping on the table as if nothing had happened, and he still wondered why Chen had given him a stone bed. Not far from him stood Lloyd. A child like him, or rather was one until he grew older because of the Aging Tea, but he was still fun to play with and play pranks on others. Lloyd is their leader, who, even in his sleep, did not remove the seriousness from his face. Zane lay on the floor, Kai did not notice that his older brother was strange, Kai himself was strange if he was able to collect fur at his eight. But the fact that Zane turned out to be a Nindroid did not disappoint him, he still loved him. And after his "death", Kai became even more attached to Zane. On the pool table was Pixel, the older sister who got emotional from Zayn and was overprotective of Kai.

Sensei Wu took the lotus position, Kai always wondered how he could sleep in that position. Furthest away was Bento sleeping peacefully next to Sensei. Kai looked in the direction where Nya lay, his older sister, who, after the disappearance of his parents, raised him and taught him. She was fast asleep, holding Jay's hand as if she was afraid he might disappear. Jay... At first, Kai couldn't stand him. The guy who unceremoniously led his sister away, but after a long journey of conversation and adventure. Kai accepted Jay and was happy for both of them. It was clear from Jay's face that he was in incredible agony. Kai wouldn't let him die, wouldn't let Nya be alone. They must all live. Kai knew what he had to do, but Nya wouldn't like it, and neither would the others.

And now he was standing on the roof, and the waves were splashing below. They were so free to do whatever they wanted. Kai looked at the door for the last time, he has so much to say to his family, but only one thought comes to mind. "I love you... And I'm sorry... there's no other way." Turning his back, Kai jumped into the water without hesitation. It was cold, but, oddly enough, a sense of security swept over him. It was so nice. Kai hasn't felt this in a long time. He began to absorb the power of the water, and it was a completely different feeling when he himself allows the water to penetrate him, and not vice versa.

Meanwhile, in the building with Jay, water began to come out of his lungs. - Jay! Nya exclaimed in shock, waking everyone up with her scream.

- What's going on with him? Lloyd looked at his comrade with concern.

- Water comes out of his lungs. Zane replied in disbelief, as if he didn't believe what was happening right now.

- Nya, did you do it? Cole looked puzzled at his friend and then at Nia.

“It’s not me…” Nya couldn’t understand, only Kai could control the water only if her brother…

- Wait, is that Kai, in the water? - Lloyd pointed to the window, where the vortex was visible, in which the youngest ninja was

- Not! Bentho shouted at once. - He did it! - She should have understood that Kai would do something. And now she's paying for it.

- What is he doing? Wu asked without taking his eyes off Kai.

- It merges with the sea, but it's only a one-way ticket. Bento looked at Nya sadly. “Now he is part of the sea, just as the sea is part of him. - No, she won't let that happen, she lost her parents, Zane, Lloyd, just not her little brother, just not Kai.

We must stop him as soon as possible before it's too late. Wu quickly walked towards the door, followed by the others except for Nya and Jay. As soon as the door slammed shut, the whirlwind stopped, and Kai appeared, or rather, what was left of him. Nya gasped at what she saw. His physical body changed and became more like water. While Kai looked at his new form, Nya managed to walk to the window, placing her hand on the glass.

Noticing his sister, Kai swam up to her. He also placed his hand on the glass against hers and smiled, making Nya smile back. Before Nya could say anything, Wojira began to roar and the smile faded from her brother's face to a serious one. Turning away from her, Kai quickly swam away towards the source of the roar. - Kai! she exclaimed desperately, and without wasting time, went to the roof.

By the time Wu and the others had finished reaching the roof, it was already too late. - Kai, come back. Wu shouts desperately at the departing student.

- It's too late. It has already merged with the sea. Bento said softly.

- He went after Kalmaar. Everyone turned to Nyu, who was standing at the door. - Kai intends to stop him and Wojira.

And I'm going to help him. Jay's voice came from behind her.

- Jay, how are you feeling? Nia asked from the whole situation, she forgot about him.

- It couldn't be better. He tried to smile, but a sharp cough pierced him instead.

- You can hardly stand on your feet. Wu said worriedly.

- I don't care, I've already decided everything! Jay glared at everyone. His determination was written all over his face. “Our little brother is there, fighting for all of us.

“Well then, what are we waiting for?” Nia puts her hand on her boyfriend's shoulder. - Not only Kayu has fun.

- GOOD. - Wu smiled at them both - Then we are with you.

Clouds gathered in the sky, and the battle continued. Kai, in the form of a dragon, delivered blows to Wojira, but he deftly dodged them. Nya and the others could only watch in horror as they fought. And so the water dragon soared into the sky and with all its speed crashed into the head of the Great Serpent, where the amulet of the wave broke. Wojira took off with a roar as his own lightning struck his body, destroying him forever. The sun peeked out from behind the clouds again. Kai landed with a crash on the roof where the ninja were.

- Kai! - everyone exclaimed joyfully. They ran to the master of water, to their younger brother, who had already taken on human form. Each of them congratulated his friend on the victory.

Lloyd immediately ran up to him to hug him, but he went right through him like a ghost. - What? - the green ninja gasped in surprise, and not only him, everyone looked at Kai incredulously.

Quickly standing next to Lloyd, Nya said, "Don't worry, we'll find a way to bring you back to how you were." Soon you will again conquer us with your singing and jokes, little brother. Nia said hopefully.

- Return? - Kai asked puzzled, as if he did not understand what was happening and his sister was making a strange statement.

- Well, yes, in a normal state. In our Kai. Jay looked strangely at his friend and brother.

Kai again did not catch the meaning of these words being in a strange state. – To be normal? Kai asked, bowing his head like a child.

- Are you okay? - Lloyd asked worriedly - We will help ...

But Kai stopped listening to him, he shone brightly, looking at the sea. - Do you hear it? – suddenly asked all Kai.

- What exactly? - Nya asked puzzled looking at her brother.

- Sea. So beautiful. So free. Kai suddenly started walking closer to the edge. - It beckons ... calls me ... - said Kai, continuing to walk.

- Kai! Wait a minute. Cole yelled and tried to put a hand on Kai's shoulder, but it went right through him. The Earth Ninja stared at his wet palm in shock.

“Your brother is lost… The sea is calling its son…” Bento shook his head sadly.

- We need to stop Kai immediately! Master Wu's stern voice snapped everyone out of their stupor.

Wasting no time, Jay stood in front of Kai - So listen, little rascal, you need to come to your senses. Your family and sister need you…” Before he could finish, Kai pushed through him. Jay shivered in the cold, feeling as if he'd walked over a waterfall or in a storm with the waves crashing here and there. Quickly crossing himself, he turned around, and just as Jay was about to say something, he was pushed by Zane, who erected a wall of ice in Kai's path.

"Zane, what are you doing!" Lloyd looks at the Nindroid incredulously, realizing that Kai could have become a block of ice.

- You could hurt him! Cole said angrily as he approached your two comrades.

- It was the only option to somehow detain him. Zane tried to calmly answer.

- Yes, but now Kai is a clot of water!!! Jay shouted while waving his arms in front of Zane. He could turn into a block of ice.

- You think I don't know! Zane called out to his friends, who recoiled at the sudden breakdown of the normally calm Ice Master. “I know it's reckless, but it will somehow hold him back and give us a chance to talk. I'm not ready to lose Kai!

"Zane…" Pixel said sadly and put her hand on Zane's shoulder, who understood how important Kai was to them.

As the three of them argued, Lloyd had already managed to move past them and approach the former water ninja, who was staring at the ice wall.

"Kai…" Lloyd began decisively, drawing the junior ninja's attention to himself. “I don’t fully understand what’s going on, but I know for sure that we will find a way to return you to your previous state, just please don’t leave.” - the last words of his voice trembled and tears began to flow. "I can't lose you as my father...

- The sea is calling me... I am unable to fight against it - Kai said sadly looking at Lloyd. “Now I have to be a part of it.

- So fight! she yelled angrily, getting everyone's attention, and Jay could have sworn he saw smoke coming out of her mouth. "You are Kai, the most stubborn ninja in all of Ninjago, you didn't give up when we fought the Overlord." When you defeated the Mistress, when you also helped us stop Chen and fought in the Tournament of Elements on an equal footing with more experienced masters and won, you were not stopped by Harumi, monsters and much more! She got closer and closer to her brother. “We have just begun to rebuild our relationship with our parents!” And you want to quit. - She started to hit Kai, but each blow missed, which angered her even more. - Leave Lloyd, Jay, Cole, Zane, Pixel, Mom, Dad, Master Wu, Skylor, ME! Nia fell to her knees, the tears she'd been holding back for so long finally began to drip from her face. “You can’t leave Kai…

All her rage evaporated, replaced by sadness. She could hear many footsteps approaching her from behind her. “Nya…” Kai’s soft voice came out, but she didn’t look up, afraid to find the wrong person who used to be her brother. - Look at me. She stood up and looked at Kai. Their eyes met, and Nya saw that blue-white eyes were looking at her with tenderness. “I have made my choice to save you all from Kalmaar and Vojita. Because all of you are more important to me than anything in the world. And the thought that I won't be there hurts me, but this is my destiny... To become an ocean... - Kai gently hugged Nu. He looked at the boys, holding out his hands for them to join.

They in turn embraced them without hesitation, not worrying about getting their clothes wet. - I love you ... the very thought of separation upsets me. But if you are in danger, I will come. - Kai pulled away and looked at Zane - Zane please remove the ice.

Zayn could do it. If he created it, then he can easily delete it. Only he doesn't want to do it. Zane knew logically that Kai had to leave because it was the only way to save the city, but his voice is screaming that we need to find another way to convince his friend their little brother of this.

Zane just bit his lip from impotence and with difficulty approached the wall. Putting his hand on the ice, he began to concentrate. And in front of everyone's eyes, the ice wall gradually began to crumble into snowflakes, which instantly melted before falling to the ground.

The bright sun, which was hidden by the wall, blinded them. - Thanks. Kai looked at Zane with gratitude, and Zane, in turn, looked at him sadly.

Before leaving, the former water master approached Lloyd. “I love you big brother. We are brothers for life and it does not matter that tea hastened your maturation. - Kai hugged the green ninja with a familiar gesture. Lloyd nodded in disbelief.

Sensei Wu called out to him when he was at the edge of the roof - Kai, whatever you hear, whatever you experience. Fight it. You must remember who you are.

- KAY! Nya yelled and immediately got up from her seat. When she reached the edge of the roof, she saw that the water had begun to recede and the streets of Ninjago reappeared. The townspeople joyfully shouted and praised their saviors from the roofs of buildings. Only the ninjas themselves did not feel like winners, each of them looked at the sea, in which the bright light on the water floated away until it completely disappeared over the horizon.

None of them moved, none uttered a word, none believed that Kai was no more. But it's gone, and they let it go...

In the room, Nya sat on the bed, in her brother's room, holding an album of all the pictures of Kai. And next to her was Lloyd, who was leaning on her shoulder. He had two bowls of water in his hands. Looking at the photos, they did not notice how Maya entered the room.

- Lloyd, you will help Ray, he is just dragging the last elements for the funeral. Maya said in a calm voice, although Nia and Lloyd could understand that she had been crying a lot lately.

- Oh sure. Taking the bowls with him, Lloyd left. Nya followed him with her eyes as soon as he left, staring at the album again. Maya shook her head sadly.

- How are you sweet? Sitting down opposite her daughter, she straightened her hair. Nia did not answer, she continued to leaf through the album. Maya silently hugged her, and she, in turn, did not answer with a hug, but did not push her mother away either.

They sat in this position for a long time, until Skylor entered the room with her mother - It's time.

Going out into the street, Nia saw that it was already dark for a long time. There were no stars or moon in the sky, and the only source of light in the monastery was the candles scattered throughout the training hall.

There were many people in the yard, all whom the ninja met on their way, all whom they helped and made friends. But it was so quiet, as if there was no one there. It usually looked different. Edna and Ed enthusiastically told Lou how things were going at the dump, and he, in turn, began to sing. Jay and Cole tried to stop their parents by making everyone laugh.

Master Wu, so to speak, used to talk nicely with Misako, Ray, and Maya over a cup of tea, reminiscing about his youth. Zane would listen with interest as Pixel talks about his father's new invention, Mr. Borg. Ronin would try to calm down Dareth, who again got Mrs. Chen to start improving the menu for the restaurant. And Nya would enjoy spending time with Lloyd, and then they would be joined by Kai and Skylor, who chatted nicely all day and Kai would start singing one of his songs, making everyone listen to him.

Ray walked over to his wife and daughter, holding out the cups to them. After taking them, they went to the others. - Today we are gathered here to honor the memory of Kai Smith. Singer. Ninja. Water Masters. Friend. Beloved. Brother - Wu said, attracting the attention of everyone. “But Nya and Lloyd can say better about Kai, I give them the floor. Wu gave way to his nephew and Nya.

Lloyd spoke first. “If they had told me six years ago that I would become Kai's brother, I would have laughed and said that you are crazy. But now I say with honor that I am glad to have such a brother, for us Kai became that light in the darkness that made us smile. He was younger than all of us, but he became a hero and the one who inspired each of us and proved that age is not a barrier to being a hero. Lloyd said, and then Nya continued.

- He has always fought for his family. He is stubborn and brave like a lion, smart and quick-witted like a Nindroid, and has the purest heart and the purest thoughts. We must remember him, his sacrifice, his life and himself. Kai, wherever you are, we miss you our little brother. - Nia said and went to a huge vase where she poured all the water. Then each of those present also poured water. Skylor just held the water with her hands and Nia saw her shedding tears for Kai.

Also extremely cute, they're benthos and both eat algae and photosynthesize. Cute little guys

alright let's kick it off - *fuck these lights suck in this room* oh we have a guest lecturer coming up later this semester *GOD THESE LIGHTS* ugh more exam 1 presentation from the grads. El nino - sothethen oscillation (ENSO) - this is a high area of productivity due to upwelling, catch rate is not consistent as some mother warm equatorial water moves sotu and disrupts the upward flow of nuts. normal years only last a few months but every 3-7 years ... *GAH SLIDE CHANGE* initially thought that was due to a decrease in upwelling favorable wind and local to preu and equadorBUT now we know that it is a part of an ocean wide oscillation in the atm called other isolation. *something something* pressure gradient between the high atm pressure in easter quat PAcf and region of low pressure in are of Indonesia. lower than average gradient=el nino. higher than average gradient = la nina. ENSO is typically associated with large changes in the climate of the equatorial region. Under normal conditions (la nina) the upper mixed layer in the western part of the ocean is substantially deeper than in the east. in the western Pacific ( want west Atlantic) the ocean level is higher. ** This figure sucks** ??Walker circulation?? El nino - strength of wind is a driving factor (not as strong) resulting in wind and water temperature patterns set up on the east side?

Walker circulation - SOI - positive: trade winds typically strong across the warm western PACFONC and pick up plenty of moisture..... GOD SLIDE CHANGE

SOI - southern oscillation index - measures the difference in air pressure between Drwin and Thaiti and is calculated daily. the air pressure difference with the long-term normal difference is expressed... kill me :)

ENSO and teleconnections; as enso proceeded from one phase to another the walker circulation varies in intensity and position. the variations cause weather changes in a number of locations. strong correlations between the warm period of ENSO and droughts in Australia, Indonesia, brazil, and Africa. at the same time dry unusually high rainfall occurs along the equator east of 160 degrees of equator and preu. ~ effects in Pacific and northern Hemi. higher than normal pressure western pacific. at higher latitudes a sequence o alternating high pressure and low-pressure anomalies from a curving eastward thus causing mid-latitudes westerlies to be further south .... *I swear to god why are we speed running this lecture* in Atlantic- el nino event generally suppress Atlantic hurricane activity so fewer hurricane than notal from in the Atlantic during Aug to Oct the paea of Atlantic hurricane season. *yeahhh I didn't do that secondary reading of 264 pages fuck that'd rather fight god than read that in a weekend*

Participation questions - Okay not to sound not great but how do we measure what is caused by ENSO and what is more anthropogenic? where do we look for that fine line between what is natural and what isn't?

What does ENSO have an effect on "the Blob" in the Pacific?

Walker circulation? does that wind cell? "circulate" in between the Hadley cells at the equator? I guess I'm just confused if this is locally found in the equator portion of South America or does it span across the equator... okay that is poorly phrased is it specifically in the Pacific or does it span across oceans? -Just equatorial pacific. yes is a cell but the size varies if is a nina or nino year.

What is the effect of El Nino on the glapagos what is the oceanography mechanism? - warmer atm conditions, less wind mixing, thus less upwelling and less stratification, thus less nutrients, and lower productivity

Japan's nuclear sewage is officially discharged into the sea! How harmful is it to the human body?

For more than two years, the legitimacy, legality and safety of the Fukushima nuclear contaminated water discharge plan have been questioned by the international community.
