Design inspirations for my binding of

Diplomatic Relations by maldoror_chant

For this one I started out drawing inspiriation for the colour scheme from the two main protagonists and ended up using quite a bit more. I had the red leather in mind first as it’s close to how Gaara’s hair is shown mostly and decided for the tsumugi for covering for purely aesthetic reasons. Only later I noticed it’s actually a good fit with the rest of Gaara’s colours. The inlay had been planned pretty early on with the kanji in mind too. I wanted to use sand veneer as it’s closer to the whole desert setting and with Gaara manipulating sand, but turned out the sand veneer was too thick and I also liked slate veneer colours better (it’s actually translucent too). The first idea had been to have it visible of both sides of the front cover. So if you opened the book the paste down side of the cover would show the backside of the cut out. Sadly, I could not figure a way to make it look good on both sides. Partly because the fiberglas carrier layer is not that awesome to look at. (Here’s a picture with the veneer on a white surface and held against the light I do like the effect, but as I said, I couldn’t figure a way to make it work, perhaps another time... )

The headbands are inspired by Rock Lee’s colours. I wanted to include him somehow in the design although his taste in colour combinations is.... questionable (but they do make a high-contrast headband).

Last addition to the design was Shukaku’s eye on the spine in favour of a tooled title. Most of the time it’s depicted as a bright dot in the racoon/ tanuki mask of the Tailed-Beast, but there are a few pictures where the pupils are shown.

The Romance of the Daisy ~ a fairly tale by Maldoror_Chant Rating: Teen and Up Word Count: 30k

That title is a lie, there’s nothing romantic or fantastical about prince Castiel's life whatsoever. Married off to king Dean for political reasons, his role is to manage the castle and help raise prince Ben, the son of Dean’s first wife. Lisa was the one Dean truly loved, her loss years ago bereaved the entire kingdom. Castiel is a pale replacement nobody cares for much unless they have a problem or something to complain about. Castiel, for his part... well, it was stupid to fall in love with his husband, but he’s always been a dunce and an embarrassment according to Michael. Why change now. Then Dean’s sister by marriage, Queen Eileen, decides to show Castiel what his true place in the castle is… … and maybe he is in a romance and a fairy tale after all. Just a little bit.

There is just something about a fairytale/arranged marriage setting for me, you know? 😊 It hits me right in the spot!

In this particular case we have Castiel who has been married to the king, Dean, for quite a while now. He knows it’s merely for political reasons and that his husband as well as the whole country are still hung up on his true love, Lisa, who passed away years ago. Castiel is very aware of everything and he has accepted the truth, even though it hurts. Even though he, foolish as he is, managed to fall in love with Dean somewhere along the way anyway.

And so he spends his days, secretly pining for his husband, dealing with the man’s stubborn son who isn’t shy on voicing his displeasure about Castiel’s mere existence on a daily manner, and running the country to the best of his abilities. Until the day everything is turned upside down …

This story is just a wonderful fairytale that pulls you right in! Castiel has come to terms with his fate as a political pawn and subpar replacement at Dean’s side. After all, he has learned from an early age that he would never be destined for anything else anyway, so why dream unnecessarily and make yourself even more miserable?

But after events begin to unravel he suddenly realizes that there might be people out there who care about him way more than he anticipated. And not just the kingdom’s subjects and the castle’s staff but the very family he married into. Foremost Dean himself who gets sick with worry when Castiel’s fate stands in the balance.

7. What’s a trope you love to write?

Hurt/Comfort is my main, probly, tho also I'm not even sure what tropes I tend to include in my fics, enemies to lovers? Any kinda demonic awakening/power reveal since I've done Rin's unsealing like a billion times lol Lots of cannibalism and demonic violence bc I'm a sucker for monsters and the whole fun host of metaphors that come with cannibalism lol

17. Are there any writers and/of stories that you consider an influence?

Yesss so many. Just fic authors alone, I have Maldoror_Chant, who wrote my absolute favorite fic The Arrangement that pretty much rewrote my entire brain and had some of the best action scenes of any fic I've read. Also the Break to Breathe trilogy by Okami Rayne had me emotional for like a solid month after I binged it and it's still one of my favorite Naruto fics to this day. Writing emotions and visual aspects in general was always my weak spot so when I found stories and styles that included those things I tried to focus on how they wrote so I could incorporate it into my own style.

For non-fics I'd say Anne Rice for the Vampire trilogy, Animorphs by K.A. Applegate, and pretty much all Niel Gaiman's works had a huge impact on me growing up and every time I reread them I pick up more bits I love about them.

Diplomatic Relations - Maldoror_chant

Artwork by Kishimoto Masashi and an unknown artist (if anyone knows whose work it is please write so I can credit properly)

Materials used:

covers - cardboard (multiple layers) - slate veneer (translucent) - genuine leather (coated) - Tsumugi paper

book block - Munken polar 100g/m² - tracing paper - Satogami paper - headbands buttonhole silk

With blank permission by the author for all her fandom related work there are two copies of this book now with only slight differences.

The slate veneer is slightly different in pattern since it is natural stone and you won’t get two pieces looking exactly the same

and I also had a slight alteration in the headband pattern

I also made an informations page thought that probably could do with more information on some parts...

WIP Diplomatic Relations - maldoror_chant Part VII

Sorry, one more. I just thought I haven’t shown someting like this yet. This time it’s really the last WIP for DR though.

I had the book hung in at the tube on the spine (no pictures of that) and could glue on the bands and pull up the leather to cover the hinge on the inside. The bands I used for this book are a bit special. They soften with water or a watery glue and the fibers split so they can be fanned out and loose that distinct shape that tends to show through the endpapers. Since I hadn’t pressed the bookblock on 90°, I put the covers down like I usually would with all paper endpapers (otherwise I’d have done it differently to allow the book to open without strain). After that step I let the book rest with a thin cardboard inside for a couple of hours before opening it again to keep working. (The cardboard is actually to keep the moisture from gluing in the hinges from seeping into the book block and make it all wavy.) Next time I’d like to have my leather hinges stretch a bit further on the cover though.

Next was covering the covers with a sturdy and slightly patterned paper. It had the wrong grain direction, but after I had a sample not stretching too much at all I wasn’t worried to use it the way I want the pattern to go anyway. I moistened it from both sides before applying glue in order to have more time working it around the edges and take some of the tension away.

I like to smooth down papers with a balled up piece of clean cloth to gently push out any air bubbles that might be beneath it. If you do it with a bonefolder right away the risk of getting permanent visible folds or wrinkles is way bigger.

Last was gluing in the paste down, which is in this case a bit tricky. Easiest way is to cut it to size, moisten it. check again for size (adjust size if necessary) and when it fits position it glue-side up on the bookblock. The moistening really makes things easier here because the paper relaxes and lays flush on the book block even with glue on one side

size after moistening (it’s only a few millimeters, but that’s an awful lot for bookbinding)

When it’s well aligned I close the cover and give it just a little pressure before checking immediately for the paste down’s position. As long as the glue is still wet enough the position can be corrected. In this case I put it into the press right after I was done checking and ajusting to have the past down firmly in place. I press only for a second though. after that there’s some more checking and wiping away any excess glue that got pushed out and onto the edge.

Again I put a (fresh) thin cardboard in right away to keep all that moisture away from the book block. So that was one side... the other was pretty much the same except for some extra fun with the cut outs.

Hashirama put his highest hopes, dreams, and delusions into Konoha's creation. One was that, maybe, Madara didn't really hate him. Another was that, maybe, he didn't really love Madara. From Konoha's birth to the First Hokage's death. Onesided HashiMada.

( it's one of those fics recommended everywhere you look and really it's just THAT good. I've been losing my mind over it while reading and afterwards too. I'm still thinking about it sometimes and it's incredibly heartbreaking. Though it was written at a time where we didn't know about HashiMada's childhood story, it's still SO GOOD.)

Fading Light by Imarion

Without thinking much about it, Hashirama tilted his head slightly and something inside him purred as Madara's next breath was a shaky one. "Go ahead," followed a dangerous request that passed Hashirama's lips by itself. A thought warned him that he was losing control. Something like that had never happened before and yet goose bumps spread on his neck as Madara actually came closer after a contemptuous hiss. The Uchiha took his time to analyze his scent up close, while Hashirama had to force himself to keep his hands still with each warm breath on his scent gland. There was no way he was going to touch Madara without his permission, but for heaven's sake he wanted to do the same as the omega. It would even be enough if he could dig his hand into that black hair just once.

( It's Omegaverse HashiMada and it's been one of the reasons why I have started to draw omegaverse founders! The tension of Hashimada in this one is killing me! It's still being updated♥)

(THIS!!!! THIS FIC!!!! IT'S SO GOOD!!! It's Lee x Gaara and I swear - I SWEAR it's the best I've ever seen of them. It beautifully paints the absolute complex relationship of the two of them. It does show Gaara's struggles so well and Lee's too! Lee whose never thought he'd end up falling for Gaara and Gaara who doesn't really understand anything of it at the start. It's so so so good. It's one of those fics that keep sitting in my mind for the rest of my life.)

(The amount of tears I've shed over this fic is crazy. Nejiten is just so doomed and so beautiful. I loved every single word that has been written down in this fanfiction and I wholeheartedly give it out to anyone who wants to read a bit of NejiTen)

Out of all the ideas Dutch and Hosea have schemed up, thrusting Arthur into the role of older brother had to be the most ill-advised yet. Taking care of others, especially a boy with fire in his eyes and mischief in his heart, was far beyond his skill set. Destruction seeped from Arthur's fingers, laying waste to every good thing that ever came his way. It was only a matter of time before he would lead the boy to ruin.

This story follows John growing up from Arthur's perspective. Arthur struggles with the responsibility of being an older brother, particularly being looked up to, as his own actions cut away at his soul and his self-worth continues to erode. He teaches John different things along the way--with varying degrees of success--and strives to protect him from harm. This is easier said than done, as is Arthur's desire to prevent the kid from becoming like him.

( I'm a little weak for the sibling dynamic between Arthur and John. I admit it. And this I just found last night and I'm at chapter 3 right now. So far I absolute adore and love it! Got the right amount of being adorable and heartbreaking I need at the moment! )
