All I Want For Christmas (Is For You To Stop Talking) by Femme (femmequixotic) & noeon (noe)
This is the first fic I ever bound and also my first ever ficbind posted on tumblr! I've only bound a handful of fics and will be posting the ones I've done when I get the time.
I bound this back in November 2023 (last year), I've been wanting to get into bookbinding for yeeears, and I finally got the nudge to do it after seeing ficbinding was actually a thing!
Since this is the first bind I ever did, there are things I want to change but overall as a first ever bind, I think it's good!
I actually bought the wrong foil and had heat activated foil instead of toner reactive foil for the cover but ... somehow it worked? Kinda?
I also do not own a cricut or silhouette so all the covers were made using Kent paper, hence why you can see the pretty distinct line on the white paper (that's the edge of the black cardstock that's covering the spine)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was also the first time in my life that I ever touched InDesign, it was thankfully not that hard to learn the basics and I now love to use it! (I do have all my typesets to download for free here if anyone wants them, I'm also able to quickly change them into letter size if you wany since I know most American binders tend to use that!)
I might've gone a little overboard with adding all the details like stars in the corners and by the page numbers and changing fonts, but I think it's a cute typeset seeing as it was my first.
I also tried making my own headbands using literal shoestring and ¥100 fabric and glue, it somehow worked and it looked cute, but this was also the only time they turned out okay I think?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The art added is by @longdaytogo with permission! (Absolutely love their art, it's stunning. Also the reason why I even got back into drarry after a decade long break lmao)
I also didn't know I should add a flyleaf at the end of my bind for this one, hence why it's right next to my endpapers, but hey, it's a first bind!
That was all for my first ever fic bind. It has actually become such a fun hobby and I really enjoy binding fics, I think I've made... 8? In total since November, a lot of the last couple of ones have been purely experimental and kind of wonky and chaotic, but that's (sadly) part of the learning process!

Book 2/50!
Grey Skies and Sunshine - Aveyune
Fandom: Hunger Games
Another fic that stuck deep in my memories! And actually one of only two Hunger Games fics I've ever read (still digging for the other one actually)
Had a bit more of a proper crack at book cloth this time round. Turns out there's an alternative for Heat N Bond you can buy at Hobbycraft and works an absolute treat!
Again, not perfect (seriously botched up some end bands for this one) but ho boy I'm in love with the simple fabric label on the spine!
What I learned:
- Spaces between spine and cover boards is something to practice with to get right
- Folding signatures in one go vs separate pages is a game changer for nice folds
- Embroidery threat works well in a pinch, but can cause bulk and make glueing and pressing a pain because the signatures want to slip
- Practice tension when sewing signatures, what feels tight may not actually be tight.
- Double check everything on the document before printing.
- 1mm board sucks long term but desperate times when practicing.

@thewriterowl finally finished How The Blooms Yearn! I only had to format the entire text twice (my first version got corrupted, rip), re-make the headbands about three times and make two different covers before settling on this third one haha
But all woes aside this was so much fun to work on! I learned so many new techniques, experimented a lot (which is why a few parts are a bit warped or uneven, but that’s the price of creativity ig) and I learned so much from this project!
Also, just cause I’m addicted to your stories, is it okay if I start binding some of your other fics? I was looking through my fav fanfics and realized that like, 90% of your works are in there, so I’d love it if I could continue this project. Sorry if it’s kinda naggy, but I can never just assume I’m allowed to without asking yk?
Anyway, it’s going on my bookbinding bookshelf now, until I inevitably re-read it for like the fourth time haha, thank you so much for encouraging me with this, I really appreciate it! :D

Ficbinding: Who has eight tentacles and isn't allowed to eat pie? by @no-gorms
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The fic: SPN, Castiel/Dean Winchester, T, 16k
Dean watched an anime porn about this once, but real life turns out to be way less interesting. Or, the one where Dean gets turned into an octopus.
This fic is brilliant, it reads like one of the comedic episodes in Supernatural. I read it in one afternoon, it made me laugh out loud, but also think "Wow, I can't believe the characterization is so good with such a silly premise" several times. The concept's potential is used amazingly, you can tell the author had fun making research on octopuses. Hard recommend!
The bind: This fic is so funny, I had to make the binding eccentric too. I used holographic pleather to evoke an octopus' leathery skin. The color blue can represent an aquarium's water (Dean's new home in the fic ^^), but what I particularly like is that the holographic color changes depending on the lighting (you can see outdoors and indoors lighting in the pictures), and there's some octopus camouflage in the story, with Dean changing color.
(no need to turn the sound on, you'll get breakroom noises)
I chose the lobster endpaper because octopus!Dean eats crustaceans and fish (and I thought I'd never get the occasion to use that one!). The red headbands and bookmark match the lobsters, and red and blue really pop together.
This is my first straight spine in an age, I don't like those usually, but with this fabric I couldn't make a round spine and it turned out great! It looks clean.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Details:
I used many small octopuses as chapter headings and closings, and not one is the same. The octopus image after the author's note is a free vector and the decorations are a free font found on Dafont.
The font I used is quite round, and I printed the text big because otherwise the book would have been too small to bind in a hardcover in my opinion.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm very happy with my trimming this time again, and with the spacing between the edges of the cover and the textblock. It's nice to see decisions I've made after months of learning pay off. I'm officially good enough at bookbinding to disobey the manual and find my own solutions to problems 🥳
Even the corners are not as bad as they could have been with this fabric.
I love this little book! It's a pleasure to look at, it was fun to make, and having this story bound will make it easier to reread, which I certainly will do.
Fonts: Hey August (title), Trushdex (author name), Bion Book (text). All free on Dafont.
Materials: Holographic pleather, 2mm grey board, 70g/m² white copy paper, synthetic bookmark and headbands. Endpaper bought in a brick and mortar craft store.
Feel free to ask me more about materials and fonts (or whatever), it won’t bother me at all to tell you what I used, I just can't think of anything else right now.

Making a book in five and a half minutes
Well, I forgot to film the folding and the punching so it actually takes a little longer.
This is a quarto, so smaller than my usual (folio-sized) books. It's the author copy of this book (turned out much better this time, I was more cautious with the guillotine.)
I left the audio in because I find it very soothing.
I was a little nervous to make this because what if someone comes in and is like THIS IS WRONG HOW DARE YOU but I am raising my middle finger at imposter syndrome.

My magnum opus, the jewel of my Binderary round-up, the result of four months of hard work (that is to say, a lot of force applied over distance), the project affectionately known as The Motherfuckers (because it was rather unclear if I was going to finish these books or if they were going to be the end of me).
Force over Distance by cleanwhiteroom. It is currently also on AO3.
I was first introduced to this incredible story by a dear friend, who first sold me on actually watching SGU, and then said that they remember this fic since like 2011, which is always a promising sign. I went digging and found out I was in luck - the story was being rewritten and reuploaded on the author's blog. The next two weeks are described by the same friend as "one of the scariest moments in our cohabitation" as I'd spent literally every waking moment injecting the story directly into my eyeballs, and let me tell you, I'd not been doing a lot of sleeping at that time.
Then I gathered up my courage and reached out to CWR re: my burning desire to bind this story. And the rest, well. Let's dig into it, shall we?
This was my first time typesetting 540k words. Considering I tend to prefer larger font sizes for increased legibility, it was immediately obvious that this was going to be a multivolume project. I settled on three, as it's the relationship between three individuals that forms the core of the story.
I also knew I wanted to keep the typeset in black and white, but play around with light and dark a lot. So I did. One of the first design idea I actually had was the way I wanted to handle projected speech. Mental link between Young, Rush and Destiny is THE most vital part of the story, and I wanted to make it immediatly obvious. I also wanted to be able to take one glance at the page and tell how much of the action is actually just two guys staring each other down :) Hence the blackout effect of thoughts being represented as light over darkness.
I also wanted to preserve as much of my reading experience as possible. So I saved all the chapter quotes/summaries in the TOC, and hid the chapter content warnings in the frame of the gate that marks the beginning of each chapter. For most of the chapter the warnings stay the same, so after a while you stop really noticing them, but then you open a new chapter and see that the familiar shape of the words has changed, and get this UH-OH feeling. Which, I think is very much how it works in my design, because when the warnings change there's usually another line of text added.
For flashbacks and dream sequences I switched from italics to a lighter shade of gray. I woudn't say it's more legible per say, but it's in keeping with the overall light/dark theme.
There are instances of people using handwritten notes in the story. I collected more than a dozen of assorted handwriting fonts, with each character having their own "handwriting". So when, for example, someone begins writing in someone else's hand, you immediately know it.
The most insane, labor-intensive part of the typeset, however, was the way I decided to handle the Ancient translations. CWR's gone through the trouble of setting up hover-to-discover for it, which gives you a very different reading experience than, say, having the translations in the endnotes. So, naturally, I said to myself that I want to replicate that, and footnotes just won't do the trick. So. Every instance of Ancient in the text has an underlay of light gray Ancient script. And an OVERLAY of paper vellum with the translation printed in blue. Now, not to toot my own horn too much, but if looks SICK AS FUCK. You also MAYBE SHOULD NOT LIVE LIKE THIS. For the two copies of this work I had to cut up 10 sheets of vellum into strips, and then spent from 20 minutes to an hour per volume tipping the strips in their proper places. I then had to wear kinetic tape on both my hands to help with the joint pain. (It was worth it.)
Now for the title spread. It is also paper vellum that you see as soon as you turn the first page (the half-title), and see it covering the title of the book and author's name. And then you turn it. And the shields sing the matter wave of Destiny through the black. And yeah, I think that's very, very clever of me, actually.
Then, of course, were the endpapers. All 12 of them are unique abstract paintings done on black cardstock by hand with brush pens and correction tape, I scanned a sample of each set for posterity. All of them are my interpretations of characters' midscapes. For volume 1 I went with the fire wind of Rush's thoughts. Volume 2 was for Young, and I went for the reverse blackout poetry effect (because for all the mental talking they do, the unprojected thoughts are opaque to their counterparts) and all the loops, hairpins and blocks he does. Volume 3 is for the combination - Rush's fire wind, changing its color to match the circuitry pattern of Destiny's AI.
The rest, in comparison, is easy. All volumes are stitched with 3 strands of embroidery floss, a combination of black, blue and silvery-gray. The French double-core endbands are sewn in the same color scheme (though with a different shade of blue and gray switched for white for added contrast). The edges are painted and splattered to look like space.
The covers feature my (signature at this point, I guess) half-cloth river pattern, with the base being dark blue linen and the printed parts being Spitzer telescope images of the W51 star forge, Jack-O'-Lantern Nebula and the Eagle Nebula (courtesy of NASA), waxed by hand for added sheen. The spines are foiled in silver with a foil quill.
Each set is 5 pound of solid hand-crafted book, with one set being my personal copy, and the other sent as a gift to the author.
And that's it, folks! This has been an incredible project to work on, and I'm very proud of what I achieved with it.

Demonology and the Tri-Phasic Model of Trauma: An Integrative Approach, a Good Omens fanfic by @mouseonamoose
After surviving the events of the apocalypse, Anthony J. Crowley goes to therapy. This fic is a well-researched and rich depiction of trauma therapy from the perspective of the mental health provider.
Bound in premium cotton from Worldcloth decorated with silver hot stamp foil and a hand painted foreedge. Frontispiece artwork generously provided by @rjrjrjrjrjrjrjrj. To enhance the reading experience, the typeset of this book was further annotated with additional commentary on the psychotherapeutic process (see footnote example.)
This book was bound and gifted to a fellow clinician in a different medical field as part of the @renegadeguild Mini Exchange, 2024.

Sheppard's Law, by @cesperanza
Version 3 of the fic I bound for the Renegade Bindery gift exchange! (you can see speranza and @gempothospress's versions here)
I had a lot of fun typesetting this--I took the epitaph motif from the section titles and ran with it. I have never seen any form of Stargate, so thanks to cesperanza and @annerbhp for consulting. Other things I hadn't done before making these three books: cover cutouts, or foil.
"I don't know much about Stargate," said I, "so I'll just put a Stargate on the cover. Should be pretty straightforward." I then proceeded to learn that foil quills were not my friend, that the cricut foil head was finicky as hell (it works beautifully on bookcloth-- but not on leather or buckram,) and in the case of this particular edition, remember too late that unlike leather and buckram, you cannot wipe glue off bookcloth with water. I think I might start taping wax paper over my covers when I'm casing in so that I stop having this problem.
That being said, both the foil and the cutouts were kind of addicting. So I might end up sneaking them into more books where they may or may not belong.

Fanbinding: Hibernating with Ghosts by @fayet
Tumblr media
Getting stuck in Kaedwen in winter had never been on Jaskier's plan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hyped to share photos of the set I made at the end of 2023 for the @renegadepublishing annual exchange! In addition to "Hibernating With Ghosts" these volumes include 30 pencil illustrations by @saeculorum-art, the fic's prequel Silent friend of many distances, and a song (The Siren Song) by @stillmadaboutpetra. I was over the moon that they all agreed to allow their work included so i could make this for the lovely Kitty / @perfectlynormalbooks (thank you for the intro to the wonderful fic!!).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This book was bound in Duo dragonfly cloth, with marbled lokta and hand-foiled cover accents. All art not by saeculorum is sourced from public domain woodcuts. I went a little harder than usual on the typeset, but it was a lot of fun and I finally had a good reason to use a vertical header (the chapter titles are SO LONG) and colored dropcaps (i was printing color for the art, anyway!). I justified my embroidery thread spending with a fun five-color color endband, and I colored the top edge.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I had a lot of fun making this and trying our a few different ways of doing things! Thanks again to everyone for a wonderful Renegade Exchange!

Guess who just completed their first Linked Universe Bookbinding project! 💙
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Made myself an anthology of all my favourite Wild-centric fics that were just too short to be a book on their own.
I wanted to model the cover off the Champion's Tunic so I ended up finding this gorgeous bright blue bookcloth and decorated it with white HTV, then found some blue and white headbands to match (not quite ready to try making my own just yet).
I hope people like this because I've got a big Linked Universe Bookbinding project I plan to announce soon, so stay tuned for that!
(Also please don't ask what fics I included, I feel guilty because I wasn't able to make authors copies and I don't want anyone to feel disappointed)

Book 1/50!
With It or Upon It - Iluxia
Fandom: Katekyou Hitman Reborn!
Baptism by fire a little bit 😂 always wanted a flipback book after finding one in the shop years ago.
Similarly, this fic has stuck in my brain for over 15 years, at one point I couldn't remember the name of it but the fic itself was like a core memory because always remembered it had the lyrics of my ultimate favorite song, heck I can even remember where and how I was sat when I first read it!
What I learned:
- A lot of trial and error to get the margins right and therefore the pages correct.
- Lining up endpages suck but practice makes perfect.
- Knocking up a book with years of craft supplies hoarded is truly fun.
- DIY homemade book cloth is satisfying and rewarding as heck.

ficbinding: Joy in the Midst of These Things by glitterbombshell
This is the fic I bound for this winter's @renegadepublishing exchange! I was excited to see this series among my giftee's requests because it's one I really enjoyed.
I recently (... okay, that was in the summer and it's already December, but. Recently) did a different stab binding box set and I liked it a lot and wanted to do it again, and thought it would work well for this series. This time instead of a slipcase, I made a wraparound case modeled after a Chinese style.
When I ordered this decorative paper, I thought it was just going to be light blue, but it turned out to also have streaks of red, and I thought that made it even more fitting for a story about Wei Wuxian finding his place at the Cloud Recesses.

More concepts for @bamsara ‘s solar lunacy! With cover ideas, and fore edge painting designs.
The first book (or Arc 1) will be themed around Sun, the second book/arc on moon, and the third based on stars (concept and colour still subject to change)
Im also thinking that the bytes of lunacy side fics will be included in the back of the third book.

So excited to share my latest bind! This is a Good Omens fic called Pray for Us, Icarus by Atalan/@brightwanderer 💐
I went a little nuts with the floral designs in this one. The cover was so much fun to put together, and I somehow managed to match the bookcloth color to the headband color perfectly. I also made the chapter headers look like Aziraphale was gathering his bouquet from Crowley throughout the years:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I can’t add another photo on mobile, but Part 7 has two wine glasses with apple slices 🥰
Technical details follow ➡️
Fonts: Glamore (title) and Sabon (body)
Cover material: Allure bookcloth in Mudpie
Dust jacket image: Abraham van Beijeren, Creative Commons usage
Endpapers: Renato Crepaldi
Text block: Hammermill 70lb Ivory
Designed in Canva and Procreate
