Free Jekyll & Hyde Typeset
Tumblr media
This is a typeset I did for The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson with a transcript from Project Gutenburg. It's set for letter quatro, and I used like eight different fonts for the entirety of this novella 馃槅. Anyway, here is the link to the typeset if anyone would like to use it for bookbinding! It's free to use for personal use only, just please leave credit and consider dropping a like/reblog if you can! Link to the typeset:

this is the one. the most popular fic in the harry potter fandom. the fic that got me into fanfiction. the fic that i sobbed to for months after reading it.
i tried to bind this three separate times over the last two years and bro the first two sucked ASS. it was legit the very first fic i tried to typeset which is like, not the greatest thing to start off with LMAO. it looked funky, i hadn鈥檛 fixed any of the spacing, my footers didn鈥檛 match the text font or size. it was very much a baby binding.
the second one was my first time using a cricut and there is a very steep learning curve w the cricut, especially in creating designs that aren鈥檛 too complex or too plain. i tried to copy one of the popular printable book jackets and omg i spent weeks modifying my designs and printing and reprinting on my cricut and it looked like trash when i was done.
so finally, we have come to this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i got really into quartos during the winter and was like omg the editing process for this would be so much more manageable if i broke it down into years! so then i did lol. it allowed me to customize each chapter into sections so i could add the chapter title to the footers, and break down graphics into separate years so i didn鈥檛 have 100 pages in one canva file. it was just a lot easier to feel accomplished having broken it down bc this fic is a MONSTER.
every chapter heading is the same - just the swirl. i gilded all the chapter titles using toner reactive foil and my laminator (she broke in the middle of this project. i ended up having to buy another laminator, and about 3 packs of foil from icraft. this is my most expensive fic binding to date馃珷). i included the songs ms.kingbean put at the top of every chapter, and the bootleg tapes and christmas special.
i am seriously so proud of how this turned out, and can鈥檛 believe it鈥檚 actually done. sorry this is super long, but this really was a labor of love. they鈥檙e not perfect, i鈥檓 still really bad at measuring and cutting straight lines, but i鈥檓 satisfied. really satisfied.

Ian The Friendly Ghost - Fandbind
here we go tumblr, don't crash on me again. 4th time writing this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
@purplemagpie 's Ian The Friendly Ghost based on the prompt by drish (@sluttymickey on tumblr): "ghosts au where Mickey thinks the house he moved in is haunted because the doors seem to close on their own and his shit somehow gets neat and tidy and Ian's just a very polite ghost who's got a bit of a crush on the adorable grumpy guy who's just moved in"
First and foremost, I want to say a big thankyou to Vick @purplemagpie for blessing all of humanity with this fic. It is beautifully written from start to finish, from the longing, the heartache, the lust, the angst, and of course the happy ending. There's a reason why it's one of my favourites, and why I wanted to make a physical copy of it! And another thankyou for allowing me to make your work physical, and for showing just as much excitement about the process as I 馃А
You can read Ian The Friendly Ghost on Ao3 here !
Second, I was inspired to have a go at this by Nosho @creepkinginc and his books! They're very very well done and absolute monsters, go check them out if you haven't already! <3
My first 31 page, hardcover fanbind :)
I want to start by saying, this is the very first time I've done anything remotely like this, I got inspired, didn't work for a couple days, and got to work and guessed and guessed some more and didn't stop until it was done. I also only used resources and materials I had on/around me!
That being said, it isn't perfect. If you're interested in doing this yourself and want neatly done and more professionally done, definitely go check out Nosho's and other tutorials online!
I went easy on this guy and myself! He's a bit messy, and a little bit delicate, but he's a book. That's all that matters to me :)
Process!
Materials:
31 pages of A4 printer paper, supplied by local print shop.
Cardboard for hardcover, upcycled box from my workplace
Cloth covering, from my textiles stuff at home. - I was hoping to find a nice deep blue or purple, but I didn't have any. I did consider a nice rust orange fabric, but am saving that for a different fic ;)
Stapler and staples brought from local shop.
Cutting matt and hot glue gun from my gf's house.
Scissors, glue stick and utility knife used from home.
The title on front page used from a draft print (of that single page) to test the layout. And the little smiley is fabric of mine from home.
Total cost: pages were 10c each ($3.20 total) at my local print place. I brought a little stapler and staples to staple the cloth to the cardboard for $4.60. The rest of equiptment used is from my home, or my gf's. In total: $7.80 (AUD).
I started by transfering the fic (word for word!) chapter by chapter from Ao3 onto Google Docs. I went through and had bit of a fight with google docs over the layout, spacing and sizing of everything, but got there in the end. All pages are A4 (or letter size on google docs), all outer margins are 1 inch, with two even columns separated by a 2 inch space. All fonts (title, summaries, tag list and body) are the same as fonts shown on Ao3 (depending on which skin you may use, I use 'For The Trees'.)
Once everything was in place on google docs, I printed all pages out at my local print place. I could not for the life of me figure out how to properly layout the document so that I could print double sided papers - I would recommend doing that, my poor little brain was just not having it. So instead, I glue the backs of each pieces of paper to the next (if that makes sense?) making sure all page numbers were in order. Doing this has caused my book to be clunky and a bit messy, which I don't personally mind (I actually quite like it, I love the homemade feel!) but others might care. After gluing all pages together, I left them under a heavy bookshelf to squish together for a couple of hours.
I then cut out the cardboard and the cloth for the cover. I stapled the sides of the cloth to the cardboard - and that was it! Easy done. I also stapled the title and smiley on the front covers as well - in future, I think I might sew the smiley onto the fabric before hand, but didn't think to add him until right at the end.
I used a hot glue gun to glue the spine of the pages to the spine of the cardboard - and it works pretty well! There are a couple places where the glue has stuck out (hence why there's not photos of the inside cover haha) but it doesn't faze me at all. I am interested in learning how to stich bind the pages in the future and hopefully can have a go at that with another fic soon, but for now my less than appealing hot glue gun skills have worked ;)
and Voil脿!
My first fanbind all done. (with some cat hair on the side)
Tumblr media
If anyone is looking to have a go at this themselves, I say go ahead! Like I said before, I did this cheap and a little messy, but I like it that way. I think depending on how many resources you have at home and how much time/money you're willing to put into the project will differ your results on how well done and/or neat it is. But all in all, a book is a goddamn book.
If you have the interest and ability to make some physical copies of your favourite fanfiction for cheap, go forth. it's worth it. I only spent $8 on this guy! It's well worth it in my opinion, and can't wait to make some more! 馃А

It's been a month since Binderary ended but I've still got books to share! This is @worse0mens's (hi!) wonderful Good Omens series, The Blossom Realm, which starts with Omens of Another Kind. This is very much a longtime favorite of mine, an AU with a really compelling combo of worldbuilding and characterization. This is a believable grand romance that's also a court drama and a fairy tale, and it's really long (the full series is about 220k words) so it will keep you reading for a long time. This is one of the fics I learned bookbinding for, and it was the first really long fic that I typeset (and redid once I learned more about typesetting). It's been a long road but it was so worth it.
More photos under the cut!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Couple of photos of the spines. The series doesn't divide easily, with one very long work, one medium-length one, and several shorter pieces. The main story is nearly 200k on its own, the longest single volume I've ever made (about 500 pages), and I was worried about it getting too unwieldy, so I put all the other works into their own volume of about 100 pages. They make a disparate set but I love them. The cover is done in skiver green faux leather from Hollander's; I've never worked with this brand before but I loved it, and one sheet was big enough to do both books. The titles are done in cricut brand gold foil htv. There were some issues with that, as I'd bought a multi-pack with a few different colors and only found out after applying the front cover graphics on both books that one, I didn't have enough to do the backs and spines; two, that the gold in that pack is a totally different color than the gold they sell on its own; and three, that no one in my area stocked it anymore and I had to order it from Europe. Here's what the back looks like:
Tumblr media
It's the same graphic as the front but without the title in the center, and it's one of the fanciest backs I've ever done and it took forever to weed all those little cutouts. The graphic was free to use on rawpixel. The font I used on the spines and front is a basic Microsoft font called Harrington that worked incredibly well on the cricut, even at small sizes; a lot of basic fonts are too thin, especially fancy ones, so this was a delightful surprise.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Photo of the top, with ribbon bookmark and handmade double core endbands. The endbands didn't come out as well as I'd have liked; they're a little uneven and the color changes aren't that evenly spaced. Double core ones are harder than I expected and I need more practice. The endpapers are chocolate silk moire, and I chose them because there's a very important massive tree in the fic and I thought they looked like wood grain. I did a little experimenting with the shorter volume that's visible around the edges of the endpaper. I wanted gilded edges but the longer book had to be rounded, and I thought I'd try paint instead of foil since I don't know how to foil a curved edge. But I did my experiments on the smaller volume and I couldn't get good coverage, so the edge had to be trimmed off. The watered-down paint had leaked into the edge of the silk moire too far for me to trim, so it's still there. But it's kind of pretty, so I'm going to call it an aesthetic choice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The title pages are the same, with free graphics from rawpixel. I got lucky and found a similar set of roses that I used for the chapter headers:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These had to be positioned by hand for each chapter so they'd fit around the text properly. It was a pain but they look so pretty. The final photo contains a story spoiler, so proceed with caution if you don't want that:
Tumblr media
The scene break image in both volumes is this tiny snake. This was one of the first aesthetic choices I made for the books. A lot of the plot is centered around a prophecy about a monster snake that everyone thinks will destroy the kingdom, and of course in the manner of Good Omens fic it's a wildly inaccurate misinterpretation and not a threat at all. I wanted something like this because the snake is not only non-threatening but it's been here the entire time and there was never any reason to freak out about it. It was surprisingly difficult to find a snake image that was both simple enough to still be clear at this size and also didn't look dangerous or like a cartoon character. I looked at so many snakes before I found this one, it's ridiculous.
And that's it! I hope the author likes it (and remembers me since I asked to do this almost a year ago). There are three more binderary posts forthcoming, though I don't know how long it'll take me to get to them. It was a busy month.

Hello hi!! I鈥檝e been working on bookbinding this fanfic for the past few weeks and AAAAAA.
THIS FANFIC, IM TELLING YOU GUYS.
It gave it all. The tears, the joy, the laughter, the gasps, the pacing at odd hours of the night IN THOUGHT OVER THIS WRITING!!! I literally had to take music breaks over it before diving into reading again. One of my favorite characterizations of Sasha James and Michael Shelley out there. THEIR FRIENDSHIP!!!!! WORDS CANNOT DESCRIBE.
I could go on and on but if you鈥檙e a TMA fan, this is definitely worth the read!! And thank you Holly for sharing this beautiful story with the rest of us <3!

Book No. 22
Tumblr media
I bound my first tiny book last week, a very small copy of Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) by @tsttoain, and I am a convert. I love the cute size, I love that fucking up only costs one (1) sheet of A4, and I love turning a project around in a single evening. Seriously. 4-5 hours, including typesetting, and that鈥檚 with me pausing to figure out each set as I went. Amazing. It is a *revelation.*
Tumblr media
Not only was this my first tiny book, this was also the author鈥檚 first foray into this ship and into writing smut; I really like the symmetry of trying something new in my binding when she was trying something new in her writing. I bound two copies, one for the author and one to keep.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am always grateful to the @renegadepub discord community for their support, but they really came through this time as I gave myself a crash course in tiny typesetting and binding and turned this around in just a few hours.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With the exception of the pages, both copies are made entirely of scraps from previous projects, and I am delighted at how they鈥檙e both a new and complete object in their own right, and simultaneously one that carries with it the ghosts of other books books I鈥檝e bound to date.

Bound: All the Young Dudes by MsKingBean89
Tumblr media
Well THIS took a long time.
I started typesetting it months ago. It's so long with a lot of chapters, and a lot of details. At first I split it into three volumes, but one would have been way longer than the others, so I resplit it into four, which I like, but just made it take that much longer.
Compared to the typesetting, binding it was a breeze. I purposely did not put any color on the inside so that I could just print it out on my laser printer. I put that thing through a workout! I had to stop and let it rest quite a bit. Poor buddy. Everything went smoothly with the folding and the punching and the sewing. I had fun making the end papers.
Tumblr media
So lovely and clean and straight!
And then.
Then.
See, I was going to sand the edges instead of putting it through the guillotine. I even bought a power hand sander a few weeks ago. I was going to embrace the sawtooth, just sand the top and bottom a bit.
But for SOME reason I decided to trim the edges and, well, that was a big mistake.
Nothing ended up square. Everything shifted while cutting. The best I can say is that no text got cut off in the making of these binds.
As I was creating the cases, I realized that the boards (which I also cut with the guillotine) were not square either. It was all such a mess. But in the end, the text blocks fit within their cases, just not squarely. So looking at the outside of the set, you'd never know they're all cattywampus inside.
Tumblr media
Moony says they look fine.
Tumblr media
Oh, lovely!
Well, let's take a peek at the inside, shall we? I'm going to put them under a cut because it's a horror show.
Well, the endpapers are cute.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh that's not so bad!
Tumblr media
OH GOD
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Moony does not like this, though.
Tumblr media
What's a "square"?
So, there you have it. Sigh.
Fonts: Chapters and titles: Krifon Body: Miller Display
This was supposed to be a gift for a friend, but I'm going to make a paperback version next and let her decide which one she wants.

I'm trying to get the last of my Binderary projects posted, so today we have books #8 and 9, Fault Lines by Marabelle123. This is a long canon compliant Good Omens fic (pre-second season) that I've had on my to-bind list since I started making books three years ago. It's unfinished and had its most recent update in early 2020, but based on how the existing story feels I'm fairly sure it was close to the end and feels complete enough to be satisfying. It's very in character and captures a lot of the specific feeling from the pre-miniseries fandom, that the relationship between the leads defies all definition. They're as close as it's possible to be and their relationship has teeth sometimes but their bond is as undefinable as it is unbreakable. Give it a read if that sounds like your thing; it's excellent.
The cover for this one is made of two colors of faux leather, cut at a diagonal with no overlap, with the title in silver foil htv. I've never done a cover like this before but I'm in love with the result. It feels very sleek and sexy and modern compared to the more vintage elements I usually favor. And I didn't have enough of either leather to do two full books, but I still wanted to use them and have the volumes match. I think it was an elegant solution.
More pics under the cut! I tried some new stuff with this one.
You may have noticed above that this is a Coptic bind, my favorite for unfinished fics because of the "out" option it leaves. If the author ever returns to it and posts more chapters it would be fairly easy to take out the stitching and add more signatures. I still stand by this motivation, but after a silence of four years and no response from the author when I reached out for permission to bind it I'm reasonably sure this is it for the story. That let me try out some stuff I'd be reluctant to do if I was planning to add pages. Have a look at the spines:
Tumblr media
Sadly I couldn't make the page count work with a single volume, since you can't do much to mitigate spine swell in a Coptic bind, but the volume split let me do some long stitches in the center that look like wings. There are plot-relevant feathers in the fic, so it's fitting. I thought of sewing one of them in white for that sweet Good Omens balance feeling, but I didn't think it would pop against the white paper and would leave the set looking unbalanced so I stuck with black on both. To get the pattern right I cut out a wing shape the same width as the spine and traced it and poked holes for the outline, then flipped it for the second volume so they'd be mirrored. You can also see that I did something different at the head and tail, more visible here:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a Coptic endband. I found out these existed a couple of months ago and absolutely had to try them. They're woven into the signatures and cover with a separate thread, after the rest of the stitching is done, and they're supposed to add some stability to the wiggly spine that you always get with these books. Unlike other types of endband, they don't have a core. I had a lot of trouble with them and had to pull out the first one and redo it with a different thread (embroidery floss is better than crochet thread for this) but I have no regrets about the finished product. They do stabilize the spine some, though not as much as I'd have liked. I really like how they (and the longstitch section) dress up a Coptic spine. I've always thought the plain ones were a little lackluster for how much work they are, but I love all the texture and interest this one has. Would absolutely not do black on black again though. Very hard to keep track of which thread I was supposed to sew under against a black background. I'll be using a contrasting color next time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Interior photos. The doublure on the inside of the cover is a striped lokta (I think; it's been a while since I bought it). The title page image is a free-to-use image that I found on I think Vecteezy. Unsurprisingly, given its title, a big theme in this one is underlying cracks and misalignments that the characters don't realize are there until there's a massive disturbance, and that's why I had the text on both the title page and the cover not line up. Things are slipping, things are cracking, and there's extra work to be done on both sides if you're going to stabilize or rebuild. Comparatively, the typeset is quite plain and simple, with only two fonts, no chapter header image, and no section break images unless the break falls on the last line of a page, in which case there's one gray line. I think it's well-suited to the story; there is a bit with an illuminated manuscript, but mostly the characters are busy introspecting in between managing crises. They don't have the time or the energy to dress things up prettily.
And that's it on Fault Lines! As I mentioned earlier, I reached out to the author on Ao3 for permission to bind but never received a response, so I really hope they don't mind that I made these. I love their fic, and I love the bind I made.

One-volume binding of Shimeji Simulation, one of my favorite mangas of all time. Folio size, Polar Duo, metallic silver HTV + case (with a little hole so you can see the girls being tender together 馃挋)
I made this one for a friend who mentioned that he'd be interested in reading the manga, but preferred to read manga in physical form. There's no licensed English translation OR print run of this, so I decided to make my own - I downloaded the Orchesc/a/ns translation/scan on MangaDex, compiled it all into a single volume, and reversed the PDF page order before imposing it into signature-form, so it can be read right-to-left, as intended! The edge art is hand-drawn by me, meant to mimic those geometric doodles that show up throughout the story. Hand-sewn headbands, to pull it together! And a little mushroom + fish charm bookmark, because OBVIOUSLY!
Fun fact: this is the first book I've ever bound that's been too chunky to fit in my home guillotine. It was nearly too big for my bookpress, too - but only nearly.

Bookbinding My Own Fanfiction pt. 4
The hardest part (for me): decorating
The whole process of a craft is nerve-wracking to me, especially because each step becomes more and more final. There's no going back, and as a perfectionist it STRESSES ME OUT.
But, so far, with bookbinding, it's all been for me so I've been surprisingly a lot more forgiving.
Because I'm so worried, I've re-designed my hardcover in InDesign to see which style I prefer before drawing by hand. Originally, I was going to do the art on the left, but since I want to try printing a dustjacket I think I'll go with the right side (with the flowers in gold).

Baby's first fanbind!
I chose one of my own stories so if I screwed it up (and oh, did I ever) it would just be a Me problem, and picked this Hannibal tale particularly because the aesthetic came fully formed to my mind.
Process and material details and trials and tribulations below the cut!
Used gold foil HTV for the cover, cut with my Cricut. I had to fully remake the case after I went to case it in...and the spine backbone board was absurdly too big for the thin textblock. RIP. Still working on wrapping my mind around how the spine/hinge/shoulders/what have you are supposed to fit together so perfectly!
Bought the beautiful marble gold, black, on red Lokta paper from hollanders, and it's just so absolutely gorgeous and perfect as endpapers! It even stood up to being glued down and peeled right back up when I realized it was misaligned (which it still is tbh, but shh, just don't look too closely lol).
Sewed my own endband with embroidery thread. That metallic gold? Not worth the price in trouble. It is actively disintegrating as we speak. Refuses to stay knotted or wound. Nightmare. But pretty tho! 馃槄
Used the same antler graphic from the cover to build a chapter heading decoration; Old London for the drop cap and Caslon for the typeset.
Overall, pleased with how it turned out! Trying not to focus on the seven thousand little errors and inaccuracies--it's about the learning process, right? Gonna do a practice bind with blank pages next to improve technique before going for another fic 馃摎

Bound my copy of the @palimpsestzine
Full linen cover in a nice greyish green which the camera can't really capture. Golden endband and golden embossing of the title. Measures roughly 19.5 cm by 13.5 cm.
It's a wonderfully made zine for the game Pentiment (which I have only played a third of..) and I highly recommend getting your own copy!

Okay this took me a while, because I am (stupidly) doing two jobs at work right now and it's eating all my energy BUT: @tackygoldring is a fanbinder/ficbinder who made this GORGEOUS copy of Murder, He Wrote for me! M made two actually (one for me and one to keep) and I could not be more pleased.
It looks like the folio from the opening of Murder, She Wrote, and the inside paper has cat paws. The bookmark has charms on it (the second copy has a cat and flame) and is crime scene tape! Crime scene tape is ALSO the scene break! Just--look at this absolute masterpiece and bask.

Binding My Own Fanfiction - The Final Result!
It's done. After about a week or so, the process is complete! (This excludes typsetting.) While it may not be perfect because I made so many mistakes, I'm really happy with the way it turned out considering it's my second bind ever.
I also wanted to show a little picture of the headband I added. It looks red in the picture, but it's actually magenta to match the flower on the cover.
Final lessons:
Stop dicking around with the cover before you're done!! I brought it with around with me to my parents place where I do the spray painting and strained it just playing around.
Less is more for spray painting too
For the love of everything, leave more room on the bookboard when trimming. It's shorter than the actual book content!!
Anyway, this was super fun and I am trying to figure out what my next project will be. None of my other writing is complete yet, so I won't bind until they're complete and edited.
If and when I get my printer, I'll be back with dustjackets!
